If you don’t work out consistently enough, it’s hard to lose weight. Yes, it’s possible to lose weight through diet alone, but you’ll likely hit a plateau at some point. You don’t need to spend hours in the gym; you only need to set up a reasonable workout schedule that you can follow each week. Why is it so hard to lose weight?

It’s a question many, if not most, people have asked themselves, probably on many occasions. Aside from the obvious food is delicious, exercise is hard. If it seems like the more fat you put on, the harder it is to lose, you’re not imagining things! Losing weight is hard for several physiological reasons. Fat cells never go away.

When you gain weight, your body creates new cells called adipocytes to store the extra fat, and those adipocyte cells never go away. You can burn away the fat inside, but you can’t burn away the adipocytes themselves. Keeping weight off may be even harder than it seems When you begin to lose weight, your body fights to defend the old, higher body weight.

People who were obese and lost a lot of weight have to eat fewer calories to maintain the same weight as someone who naturally maintains that same weight. The reasons why it’s so hard can vary from person to person, particularly due to the role of genetics in weight gain. Read on to learn why achieving your weight loss goal can be so difficult — and whether it’s a good idea to keep trying. This article specifically addresses women, but most of the principles.

Genetics is most likely the biggest culprit to why you have difficulty losing weight in the thighs. Your genes determine the pattern of your weight gain, and the same can be said for weight loss. If you tend to gain weight along the thighs first, losing weight from this area of the body can become difficult. A late-night meal can spell trouble for your weight loss plan.

It may raise your body temperature, blood sugar, and insulin, which makes it harder for you to burn fat. Try to eat dinner at least 3. But, in reality, losing weight is tough, and it’s not because you or anyone else is lazy or just not trying hard enough. It’s because, for many of us, everything from our biology and our. First of all, losing weight is against our nature.

For millions of years, evolution has been teaching our bodies to store energy (in fat) and gain weight. Even though today this mechanism is a bit outdated, it still has control over our behaviour.

  • Hey Kathleen check out Haylie Pomory. She is the only person that has a plan I’ve been successful with in my “older” age:) WW worked great when I was younger but they don’t omit any foods. Haylie states no wheat, no corn, no sugar, no dairy, no caffeine, no etoh, no processed anything.

  • Im 5’5 im 145lbs i have been hitting the gym hard 4-5 times a week with weights and strength training i only eat roughly 1400 cals and even started intermittent fasting for the past month..NO RESULTS. Have not lost one pound. I just wanna give up��

  • I thought this was going to be a helpful video, and they play the same old evolution card again. So this didn’t help me at all. BTW, not all overweight people eat out at fast food. Eat less, exercise more? Doing that already. Not losing.

  • It is true some foods are a problem. I can not stop. I use to work for McDonald’s. It is a combination of salt, sugar and fat. It lights up your brain.

  • Since I started changing to healthier options of food in preparation for gastric bypass, I find myself craving vegetables. Ive been having a salad at least once a day and veggies with dinner. No potato, pasta or rice. And I quit smoking 22 days ago. Its definitely not easy and we are constantly bombarded with advertising/commercials for junk. Companies seem to put profit over the health of their customers but we arent forced to buy. I dont even go down the snack or cereal aisles at the grocery store.

  • What drives me even crazier is that all the unhealthy foods are cheaper than what is healthy. Then being on a budget makes it worse because you don’t want to buy all your fruit at one time because it will go bad so it is like you are stuck with ramen noodles and salty can foods and cheap sodas because they have a longer shelf life. Healthy food should be cheaper and junk food should be expensive. Makes more sense to me.

I don’t know a lot about macros or anything so what I’ve been doing is I’ve been eating only a small lunch and a moderate dinner, with lots of water throughout the day and no fast food/processed food.   • So I’ve struggled for a long time with weight and started “eating clean” a little over a year and a half ago while lifting weights. But now I’m really trying to get some more muscle mass and lean out (I still have some pudge I want to loose) would purchasing your plan from the link in your box help with that? I just really have no idea what my macros should be and I’ve tried the online calculators and they’re telling me the same macors as you say you’re eating. Around 200 carbs, 50-55 fats, and 120-140 protein. I’m around 138-140 pounds and 5’5”. Just curious as to what your opinion was. Love your channel btw you’re awesome!!

  • Weightlifting is incredible. I just started weight training about two weeks ago, 6 times a week. In that short time I’ve seen changes in how my body looks but also I feel my metabolism has increased. I can eat more now, a LOT more, still in a caloric deficit, than I was able to eat prior to weightlifting. I totally recommend it for anyone who wants to loose weight!

  • I’ve lost 85 lbs another 15 to go. And I agree its simple to do so. Without bragging its really not been near as difficult as I thought it would be. I have adapted my diet and eat healthy food and I am never hungry. I eat plenty. And I now enjoy what I eat. Its been the best thing I’ve ever done. I only regret not doing it sooner. But the past doesn’t matter just the healthy happy future now:)

  • Does the medication you mention, contrivo cause diarrhea? I’ve heard of other ‘weight loss’ RX meds that cause severe diarrhea or anal leakage, especially if you eat something greasy. That’s enough to scare most of us away.

  • I have the opposite problem… it seems no matter what I eat or how much of it, I can’t seem to get passed 60 kg. My height is 175 cm and I’ve got a beer belly… not the most attractive human in existence, you can imagine. ^^

    Theres no reason why it should take more than 4 years for grad and 4 years for undergrad. Most ppl start right after high school 1819. With AP classes, you can cut out a year, even 2 years out of undergrad if u can handle the workload.
    College at 20? Unless theres hardship theres no reason to start that late. Tho in your case I wouldnt be surprised if you sat on ur ass for 2 years.

  • @kimers7685 Me too. I’m pretty lean, but I have to be careful. My metabolism is awful. I go out to eat with my friends, and they can absolutely stuff their faces. They don’t put on an ounce of weight. If I choose to do so, I’ll wake up the next morning with a little belly on me.

  • When I Started working out, I was doing everything right. I didn’t lose any weight on the scale. I was lifting weights and following macros.. some cardio not much.. But I was losing size.. I went down 4 sizes.. I was building muscle and losing fat, but there was no change on the scale. So maybe that’s what was going on with the girl. Sorry if this was already covered, I didn’t want to go through all the comments. lol

    its so hard for us to lose weight because we make excuses for ourselves and don’t get to the doing part of losing weight. the best way is to exercise and eat a lot of fresh healthy fruits and veggies instead of eating out 3-4 times a week. it takes discipline and any one can do it if they are determined.

  • My husband and I are polar opposites, if we have chocolate, he will eat it until it’s gone.
    I on the other hand, can eat one piece and be good for days.
    I have been listening and paying attention to what my body is asking for, and have found myself looking at catfish, and having a debate,
    “Hmm, catfish”
    “I don’t like catfish”
    “But it’s catfish”
    “I guess I’m having catfish for dinner” so I got it, made it for dinner, and it was just what my body needed. And there was the other time, where I had to go to 2 different grocery stores, because I was craving turnips of all things. And about 2 years ago, my daughter asked me if I had eaten her ice cream.
    Still not sure who was more surprised by my answer of
    “Why would I have eaten your ice cream? I don’t like ice cream” There still is no explanation for that, however, as many times as people have tried to convince me to have ice cream, my answer hasn’t changed. So it’s been 2 years without ice cream. The most frequently asked question I get for this statement is
    “What do you mean, ‘you don’t like ice cream’?

  • I like to make a ton of food all at once. It’s food I love and crave. Then, I can dream about olives in a lettuce wrap all day, or light butter chicken with brown rice, or carrot, cilantro, mango and plain yogurt sauce (mango is a special treat and since this meal is hard to make, I only eat them every single moment I can, which is very infrequent), cucumber, and fish, in a brown rice summer roll, or the scallops and kale in spicy tomato sauce with no noodles. The scallops are tender like pasta. You get the picture, I’m sure. If I can’t dream about my food at home all day, I then overeat and eat like I don’t care. I still love my potato chips, but now I can mix a tiny bit with a large portion of tuna salad made with cottage cheese. I cannot be as strict as you, I’m slowly making progress. I’m going to use pieces of clementine with my tuna soon, or beans because they can make things creamy, and puréed tofu. Moving away from mayo is a big deal. I’m trying!!!

  • Hi I actually tried this I put all my goodies behind doors and there not in eye sight so I don’t crave them. I all so liked it when you showed us how much grease came out a crisp it really put me off. So I tell my self now food is ready available when I want it I can have it anytime when ever I want so now I only have food when I’m hungry. I lost weight with out even trying hard. Thank you.

  • I am so glad I came across your channel. Thanks a lot for such great content. I need to lose 60 pounds. I have been asked to target 10k steps per day which is about 4.5 miles. I don’t sweat much when I am cover 10k steps. However as per you one should sweat a lot during workouts. I am a working mom of two. I can spare just one hour each day for workout. I do sweat a lot when I do home workouts like beachbody. Do you suggest I stop 10k target and focus on beachbody workouts? Please help out in easing the confusion.

  • I am confused regarding your statement that variety makes one more hungry. In my experience, finicky eaters who only eat certain foods and textures all the time, need more and more of that food to satisfy them. This often results in finicky eaters being overweight. You did say that too much variety at a given moment is not good, and that variety has to be spread out throughout the day or week. Is finicky eating then just a result of an out-of-control eater trying to control their environment?

    I’ve been trying to cut and tbh if I’m being honest I’ve been trying to lose fat for about 5 years so I think I need to eat more and try increase my calories. I lost around 5 stone I’m now 128 pounds and can’t lose a pound I originally ate around 1500-2000 calories but now I can’t eat more than 1200, if i do i gain weight it’s awful. I think my metabolism is screwed, how many calories would you add initially? I’m 5 foot 2 and lift heavy 4 times a week. don’t want to gain too much fat xx

  • We live in a society that is set up for failure in so many ways. We are bombarded with media influence, advertising, so much so that it causes people to trip up again and again. One big obstacle in the road is the issue of societal weight gain in the USA and the UK. Fast food advertising bombarding our subconscious minds is a bit contributing factor as to why we eat so negatively. Often, we have already made the decision to eat fast food without consciously realising we have. The key is to not to be so hard on yourself, as it’s not your fault the way society is set up. There are other factors but I feel this is the big issue. Take responsibility and try to reduce the amount of exposure you have to advertising and make conscious, healthy choices for yourself. My advice would be to create a personalized step-by-step plan that will reduce your appetite, making you lose weight quickly without hunger and improve you metabolic health at the same time.

    Be mindful of what you eat when dieting.

    1. Start by cutting back on your carbs so that your hunger levels will reduce and you’ll end up eating much fewer calories. This will also diminish bloating and unnecessary water weight, not to mention you’ll look and feel a lot healthier.

    2. Replacing carbs with delicious fat-burning foods will help eliminate body fat and make dieting a lot easier because your sugar cravings will weaken and you’ll feel energized from fueling the body with the right foods.

  • Im go to the gym really often with my father, my genetics makes it easier to gain muscle, i have large muscles but i eat clean bit my fat on my abdominal area wont budge, my only fat stores there and im not gaining for nor losing it

  • I’ve shared this to my friend. She’s so hard on herself. She’s going on holiday and she’s not going to wear nice summer clothes because she doesn’t want people talking about her. I told her that she’s never going to see these people ever again, we just watched two, young, fit girls park in a disabled space and even that wasn’t proof enough of how self absorbed most people are. Then she said but I do it, I’ll say look at the sight of them and I asked her, do you think they care about your opinion? Probably not. She is a big woman and has mobility issues, so I’m hoping that she will listen to this and take it in. You’ve helped me so much, I’ve got still a bit to go but my state of mind is better now than it has been in the past four years since my dog passed away.   • Quit sugars…or check your hormones even at a young age especially if on birth control….could have hormone problems being out of whack!! But please don’t starve yourselves!!! Not saying that’s what’s being said but keep trying!!!

    im counting calories
    im doing some exercise
    from my cals i should be loosing but nothing isnt happening.
    im trying to do weightlifting but still the same weight on scales.
    yes im loosing fat and intches but i want scale to go down.

    my def is 1680 cals
    so im eating 1700 cals

  • Yeah, she makes good points in the video. Even if we live in a age of abundance what about all that other junk that is added to our meats and other stuff. Hormones steroids and all the great lengths we go through to preserve the food longer? Add that to a slowing metabolism. While I was trying to keep in shape, I could barely eat nothing. It didn’t even matter if it was tofu fruits and vegetables and no red meat. Organic food is too expensive in new york city.

  • Losing fat is easy. It just takes time, patience, and commitment. Maintaining that weight and/or gaining muscle mass is far more difficult!

  • im 26 and have succesffuly been loosing weight, i think for myself it has everything to do with will power and desire. However I don’t know if it is the same for older people maybe their bodies react differently and so it isn’t to do with willpower for them as she says…

  • its not easy to gain weight for lowgainers don’t believe that its easy for skinny people to gain weight you have to eat more than you’re body wants to and that can be harder than just eating nothing. i mean they don’t even have to prepare food ore somethingfat people are just lazy haha

  • These are great tips. Reducing sugar has helped me decrease the cravings. I have found eating berries filled with fiber and antioxidants is a healthier choice than candy.

  • Personally, I don’t believe cookies, cakes, deserts or any of those sweetener delicacies make you fat. I believe it’s the meat that does the work. I recently work two weeks at KFC, eating nothing but chicken there. Before I knew, my friend called me chubby.

  • I’ve recently started researching more because I am somewhat starting eating disorder recovery, and apparently the officially recommended calorie intake of 2000 kcal a day is actually extremely off. Reason being, this number is literally the result of people reports, meaning, it is based on people’s self-reported calorie intake. Now people typically undercalculate by around 1/4 to 1/3, which is something I can confirm easily > firstly from my own journey of realizing how much calories there actually are in certain foods, plus just watching others attempting calorie tracking and like internally laughing at how much they undercalculate.

  • the calorie deficit thing still makes me pretty confused… because id like to be on a deficit of at least 200 calories, and my bmr is around 1500… so that means id have to get down to 1300 calories/day, but everyone says thats too low. great video, by the way!

  • Well It’s easy for everyone just try my workout a 25 mile run, another 30 mins run, then onto the workout 30 push ups, then throwing punches at a boxing bag for 45 mins

  • Go Vegan or Vegetarian, drink more water (5 to 8 glasses a day), eat 3 to 6 times a day with smaller portions, eat more protein, more fruits and veggies, soy products, don’t eat before you fall asleep since fat will be stored and not burned.
    Go to the gym and work out, or work out at home for 45 minutes to an hour.
    Use online calculators to find out how many calories a person of your gender, height, weight, and age should eat.
    Subtract about 300 to 500 from that.
    Count calories you eat

  • My colleague didn’t accept himself for who he was and did whatever he could to lose weight, but didn’t lose ANY of the weight he was putting on, but now he is overweight he believes people might think he is un attractive and in that way he doesn’t have to deal with love again. But now he accepted himself, he loses weight!! ��❤️
