A four-week fat loss study found that individuals continued to lose weight during week five, despite an increase in calorie intake towards maintenance level. While this seems like some next-level wizardry, we can logically and rationally conclude that this continued weight loss must in some way be tied to water retention and subsequent water loss. Those who say you’ll experience the whoosh effect believe that when you start the keto diet, the diet causes your fat cells to retain water. They. This buzzy weight-loss term supposedly describes a phenomenon in which fat cells fill with water, feel “squishy” for a bit, then — whoosh! — release all that water so you drop a few pounds seemingly overnight.

If that sounds like a made-up term, that’s because it is. Here’s what you need to know about this persistent fitness myth. The whoosh effect is simply a name given to the alleged phenomenon that when your body burns fat, its fat cells often temporarily fill with water before fully shrinking down. This can cause your scale weight to stall and your body shape stay relatively the same (if not squishier) even though you’re on track for weight loss. So, the whoosh effect is a hypothesis whereby there is a delay between visible weight loss and actual weight (fat) loss.

This hypothesis goes as follows: When your fat cells are emptied of their fat (due to diet and exercising), they fill up with water. This results in your problem areas becoming soft and squishy. I feel the whoosh effect can be a great way to keep one motivated while on a weight loss plateau.

It can actually keep the frustration level down which is so peculiar during weight loss journey. It has been observed that people with higher levels of water retention experience more whoosh effect. The whoosh effect explains why tracking fat loss can be tricky. If you are dieting and still have squishy fat without weight loss, this could be the reason why. I have read online that you can actually force the whoosh effect with certain types of exercise and diet, but I haven’t tried it.

November 15, 2012 6:57PM. 15. It should be noted that as you gain and lose weight, fat cells do not increase or decrease in number, they simply increase or decrease in size, if I remember correctly.

Recently, one paper did suggest that visceral fat can fill up with water after massive weight loss but that’s about it. Somewhat circumstantially, people using Bioimpedance body fat scales (which use hydration to estimate body fat levels) have noted that body fat. Leading up to the whoosh, the fat, marbles under the skin will keep reducing and more and more of the fat will become mostly water. Your fat will get EXTREMELY soft and you will almost feel like you are getting bigger than you were earlier.

The fat/skin seems almost to leak out and feels extremely yucky.

  • Good points. But I really think nutrition does matter a lot (your cells are made out of the food you eat ultimately). Think at least about the fact that toxins are stored in the fat cells. Get rid of the toxins and stop pumping other toxins and your body will naturally release the extra fat where this is the case, of course, because people store fat for other reasons as well. It’s not just consuming more calories than you burn, it has to do so much with hormone balance and your mental and psychological state. Some people are not able to lose weight, despite eating clean and exercising because of stress, trauma, burn out, lack of sleep and the like. All these mean stress for your body and your body won’t let go of fat stores in times of stress. Fat=safety.

  • Encouragement: I have been strict these last 30 days (under 10g total carbs most days) and I started feeling puffy and jiggly with my fat looking marbled and I had a nice fat scoop of Rebel Ice Cream (the whole pint of vanilla has 5g net carbs, hallelujah!) and a couple squares of Choceur milk chocolate.   • Yep, this happens to me. I have a cheat day Once a week where I eat around 3000 calories in one meal. The next day the fat around my stomach and love handles is visibly reduced.

    This woosh effect always appears at the final phase in my weight loss, and it is my favorite part of the dieting! Even though there is no change in my weight, every time I wake up and look in the mirror I see small but very clear visual changes, my muscle structure is just getting more and more detailed and that is so awsome! The weight usually goes down when I eat a little bit more via revers dieting.

  • I have been on a weight loss journey from 17stone 7lbs and have been losing weight until recently were i have levelled out for about a week with little to no loss and this morning I weighed myself and cane on at 15stone 10.6 lbs and took a bath then jumped on the scale 3 hours later and some how lost 3.6 lbs so I have a feeling this happened to me today.

  • What a great video, I mean great video. I have lost 70 pounds as of today from last July 9th of last year. The last 3 plus weeks I was stuck at between 205-207 and I was getting pissed, frustrated and then all of sudden this week I’m down to 202.6 I swear over the last few days I’m like, I feel like I lost more, I saw myself in the mirror and looked like I lost some weight.   • Ok, so I’m right now at around 13% bodyfat looking to get down to 10%. My calorie deficit is pretty big, 800-900 calories under maintenance each day, but protein intake is high (1g/lb) and I still lift heavy. Over the last two weeks my weight has gone down 1.8kg. In spite of this, my abdomen looks less defined than two weeks ago. This is because the fat around my abdomen has gotten very soft and not as tense as before, you can see it’s a bit droopy if I lay on my side. Am I on the right track or is this is a bad sign?

  • I have read about the whoosh effect and the Minnesota Starvation Experiment. I’ve done my own experiments over the past couple years, and realized the “whoosh” is the body losing all the water/glycgen it gained after a caloric increase/binge.

  • What I’d like to know is why do weight varies so much when we step on different scales. I’m just terrified of scales. And haven’t been able to get a dexa scan ��

  • Some possible causes for whoosh effect:
    The body loses the fluid used to maintain the previous weight slowly because you might regain the previous weight.
    The body loses the fluid from fat cells slowly because it can cause electrolytes imbalance if it reaches the circulatory system fast.
    The body prevents dehydration as it loses weight fast by holding on to water. Since you might be in a place of water scarcity. This is actually favorable for survival.

    I am much more inclined towards the last reason because when i started keto, i came from a high carb background with a lot of water retained in my body. Then my whoosh effect happened as soon as i started keto, i lost all my water in about 2 to 3 days.
    But when i became fat adapted, the body became used to release water and there was a great risk of dehydration. So it started holding more and more on to water in fat cells the more i lose weight.
    The water retention also increases with the deficit of calories. The more the deficit, the more water retained in fat cells when losing weight. That’s because when we lose weight fast, our non fat cells lose part of their fat (that helps regulate the water levels in cell). So the body finds a way to retain water in the body since our good cells are in danger of dehydration. And it achieves it through fat cells.

    So the solution will be to eat foods that hydrates us efficiently (without taking too much water); so that the body doesn’t think it’s risking dehydration. These are foods like berries, cucumber, tomatoes,….
    the other thing is to keep fat high in the diet. Because we want to lose fat without making our good cell deficient in fat; other wise they will dehydrate and cause our body to retain any water.

  • Yeah! I went through a 4 week stall after losing 38 lbs. I was eating right, fasting and I gained about five pounds back! Very discouraging!�� today I woke up and weighed myself and I had lost four lbs; figured it was just water loss and after I ate I would just gain it back. Not so! I ate breakfast, went to church and went pee like four times. Sorry not trying to be gross, but all day it was like every 20 minutes. Came home ate a decent meal. After the meal I weighed what I did when I first got up! Anyway, long story short, I think I had the Woosh effect and broke my stall after 4 weeks!

  • Thank goodness I’m not the only one. Been 5 weeks and I’ve lost 2 pounds. Yet myself and my family have noticed I’m slimming out anyway. On the bright side, my mental clarity and stability have taken huuuuge strides of improvement, as well as my energy levels. That alone is enough for me to keep going.   • I been counting calories and working out an hour morning and night. Only eating organic whole foods. Drinking whey protein with water. Drinking gallon of water only everyday. No sugar. thinking im in a deficit for three months. I just found out the truth in this vid. Dam it man. On this fitpal app it said i needed 1500 cal. Starting weight was 165. Im only dropping 100 cal. Thats not good enough. I want to speed these abs i have worked for up. Im dropping another 400 cal. 1100 daily cal for me.   • Well, I’ve being doing keto + if for 7 weeks now… I lost around 7 kgs in the first 3 weeks… but after that my weight is going up and then go down and up again, but not less than it was in the third week… I don’t cheat the diet, I tried to change the fasting hours, change what I am eating for my body don’t get use to it… but still the same. So many people lose like 15kgs in two months… And I even lost 10. And I am a big girl. I feel a little disappointed with it to be honest. I don’t eat more than 1000/1200 calories a day…

  • Just found your channel. Glad to see videos about all the things I am wondering about Keto. Question for you: in the beginning for Keto, count calories or no? My body has this weird thing where every time I try a new way to lose weight, I might lose a couple pounds, and somehow I end up counting calories, for like a week I stay under my goal, feel proud of myself, then I get excited and step up my workouts and then somehow I gain back whatever I lost, start going over my calories, gain more weight, and get discouraged and give up! This all happens within a few weeks I would say. The only thing I have stuck consistently at over the years is running and walking.
    Don’t get my wrong I have never really tried “diets” per se. It’s more versions of eating cleaner. Whole foods based diet. Cut out sugar. Cut out dairy. Cut out grains. Etc. It can be so hard it’s ridiculous!
    So a bit over a week ago I decided to start Keto or at least low carbs. Already it is such a challenge. Not once did I get my carbs to 20 in a day haha! Closest was around 50g. Usually around 100. However I was not subtracting fiber, so that is not net carbs. I have managed to get (mostly good) fats from 60-75% most days. I lost a couple pounds last week and they are already back. �� Thoughts? Suggestions? Aside from exogenous ketones which I already have.

  • Omg i think maybe that’s what’s going on with me. I’m on week 5 i dropped 11 lbs the first 3 weeks and now my weight hasn’t changed for about 2 weeks. And adjusted my macros for the weight loss… I even started working out more and it hasn’t changed but it did go up like one pound. I hope this is what is going on because I’m like what am I doing wrong. I have 40 more pounds to go to my goal weight. Will hold out and keep going because I do feel amazing.

  • Ive never heard thos term or heard the explanation but it has happened to me. When I diet I tend to lose 3 to 5 pounds in a week then the following week I dont lose anything. On the third week I lose 3-5 more pounds. On the fourth week I see zero weight loss. Perhaps Ill even gaina pound or two. The following week I drop 3-5 lbs again. As the diet proceed this process continues but the weight loss weeks tend to see lower loses and the next week tend to see some weight gain. For me I tend to lose 10-12 lbs in the first two months, 8-10 in third and 6-8 in the forth. After the forth month its a challenge to lose 4 lbs a month. Throughout this entire time I continually see these woosh effect loses.

  • Hi there, I’m feeling really down right now. I have been doing an strict Egg fast for the 6 days. Sw 150 day 6 143.1. I followed it to a T. Until today. I started off right with my fat coffee and eggs an fat and lots of water today and went to the pool and did a workout in the pool as well as used the steam sauna. My husband wanted to go to eat and where we went does not make eggs. So I ate about 6 grilled shrimp and 2 asparagus and more water. I did get sunburned today just FYI. Tonight I cannot sleep so about 1:30am I weighed again. My weight was up to 148.4 almost where I started on the egg fast!!! I don’t know what happened and thinking about fasting all the next day with nothing but water.. what would make me put that much weight back on? I was already doing keto before the egg fast but I wanted to boost it along as I have a June wedding to be in!! I’m so upset and distraught I don’t know what to do!! I have been waiting for that whoosh too but now I’m starting all over again and I just want to cry!! Advice?

  • Yes..had the woosh effect. After 5 days on keto I was struck with the “keto flu.” It was horrendous. I shed about 12 pounds of water weight in 2-3 days. Weight loss slowed down after that. I’ve been on keto about 3 weeks and have lost between 15-17 pounds.

  • Is it okay if I disagree with the hard workout and then smoothie, example. Although the smoothie is 800kcal and the workout burnt only 600kcal, you must take into account the continued calories burnt after the workout eg stimulating muscle synthesis and recouperation/glycogen replenishment, healing of tissues, which burns kcal’s, not to mention the elevated metabolic rate after a workout (esp cardio) which will cause more calories burnt. Therefore although during the, say, 1 hour workout you burnt 600kcal, the overall affect of the workout for that day could have burnt a total of 1200kcal. This is more true with HIIT type training and bodybuilding training.

    Also some foods especially vegetables and salads BURN calories DURING digestion. Eg celery/cucumber…. Although the validity of this claim is dubious it is worth considering.

    Overall I think we should think of working out as a spark or stimulus to create a better environment both within and outside the body.

    The video was GREAT, mind you, and the take home message of not getting caught up in false perceptions and minutiae was well bought across. You did tail off a little at the end though. I hope for an expanded video next time.

    P.s. How accurate and valid is the water in the hands test? Never heard of it before sounds mega cool if it’s true (not saying it isn’t).

  • Thank you for your video. I was actually going to look this up today because I’ve heard people mention it and wanted to know what the “whoosh” was. I just started this month and have only lost 6 lbs but I keep telling myself that slow and steady wins the race. I’m more interested in the overall health benefits associated with this lifestyle.

  • I started about 9 months ago and I actually gained weight in the beginning, I got frustrated but I stayed on it. I stopped weighing myself because it would make me feel depressed. I then just focused on being healthy, I worked out and followed a Keto friendly food plan, then I noticed my clothes fitting different and looser. I went to the doctor for my regular check up and they had to weigh me, I was nervous and did not want to know, but I looked anyways and saw that I went from 184.0 pounds to 150.0 pounds, I had lost 34 pounds in 4-5 months. This made me feel awesome, I went from wearing a size 14, XL, 34 waist pants to a size 8, Medium, 28 29 waist. I was so excited. I was diagnosed 6 years ago with MS and sometimes it interferes with my workouts, and I cannot always be consistent with working out. I am at a stuck place again, I am at 147 pounds and can’t seem to budge….any suggestions???

  • I put my newly purchased scale back in the box and plan to break it out once a month… in 41/2 months I went from 42×30 to 38×30 jeans but only lost 3lbs these last 2 months (but -30lbs over the whole 4 1/2 months)
    Only thing I miss now is beer and my friends are now adapted to my bottles of water and don’t kid me about it any more, they can see it is working.

My protein intake is 65 g.to 80g.,and Carb intake is 140 g.to 175 g.My current weight is 80 KGs height is 175 CMs.and age is 64.My current muscle mass is 28.2.Please guide me to reach my target.I had not measured my muscle mass at 90 KG.But at 86.7 KG it was27%at 83.6 KG it was 27.1%,at 82.3 it was 28.3% but after 3 months of lower body work outs it was almost same.I want to recompose my body only,not ripped muscular body,am I supposed to go for multiple sets initially? Is it ok if I start with one set of all exercises?

    1 How long before your training you say someone should eat carbs to get the NRJ effect at the same moment of his training session

    2 I dont eat protein powder and I feel without the protein powder its not easy with food to get the 1g of protein by pound of targeted body weight, what would u recommend in that situation considering that my aim is to lose fat and build muscles at the same? Is half a gram instead of a gram of protein ok?

  • I have the same exact problem. Im stuck at 15% bf being 165lbs. Dobt wanna loose more weight just more fat. So what i see fit for me is il stay at the weight that am in n i amped up my protein between 0.5g to 0.8 gram per pound of body weight. For three to 4 months progressive overload on lifts like bench, chinups n shoulder press then will resume to cutting.

  • No mention on intermittent fasting? It’s proven to retain muscle and as long as you’re staying in the 16:8 or 20:4 range, you can still get enough macronutrients including protein to stimulate protein synthesis and build muscle while retaining that and burning fat during your fasting period.

  • 3 weeks losing 2 lbs one week at maintenance to keep metabolism high with low carbs to keep insulin low and keep cortisol low as well…with IF and HIIT 3 times a week with some low intensity cardio can do the trick…I think most ppl over look controlling hormones such as insulin and focus too much on cals in cals out…the body is more complex than this calculator approach..certain macros have different effects in the body etc

  • How do I know how many calories to eat? I’ve gotten like 6 different calculations (1500, 1233, 1800) a friend at work said 1000. I usually go over 1000 and find it hard to hit the fat (whatever that number is really supposed to be). I started July 16 and have been losing and ganing the same amount 9f weight (6lbs). I’m more worried about consuming the correct amount of calories and macros so that I can stay in ketosis which will cause the scale to eventually move. I’m super frustrated please help.   • I am going through this right now. It is very uncomfortable. I can feel the water retention in the back of my legs and actually push the water back and forth. Most days I bike so the top of my legs are muscular. I know that if I carb up this will automatically stop the process. I hope that this goes away soon.

  • People have a certain threshhold of fat cells that they will reach by age 25. The number will not ‘increase’ if you gain a lot of weight, because fat cells do not multiply in that way. Fat cells do die off and are replaced after age 25, but if you gain a lot of weight it is not because your body made a lot of new fat cells, it simply stored fat in the ones you have. Some people are genetically predisposed to having more fat cells than other, and therefore may have to work harder to keep their body fat percentages down. This is all based on recent research from 2016, but it explains why the whoosh happens the way that it does, and why those of us with more fat cells seem to take longer to whoosh out the water weight. It might also explain why overweight and obese people who try fad diets and then return to normal eating gain the weight/fat percentages back. This was mostly a rant for people like me who panicked at hearing that our fat cells can multiply:)

  • So NO ONE is asking “if you are not burning fat, why does your breath still contain moisture”? Could it be that the 70 square meters of surface area of the lungs easily admits the transfer of water from our body to the exhaled breath? No other metabolic process or the simple evaporative loss of consumed water accounts for the water in our breath?

  • Everyone saying they’re working out every day without stopping you’re most likely doing more harm than not! If you’re sore your muscles tore (which is a good thing) but you have to let it recover or you’ll keep tearing them and just injure yourself!!!

  • This is not entirely accurate. There are two aspects to fat loss in the human body. A physics aspect (calories in / calories out) is one of them and that’s the only aspect he addressed in his argument. Another aspect is the biology of healthy eating. Your body is a bio active engine with a fuel tank (fat cells) if you give it the wrong fuel or the suboptimal one like fried foods and added sugar, it will store most of it and not burn it making you feel more hungry and tired ( think old people they eat less than younger people still accumulate fat more plus health issues ) but if you feed it optimum fuel like fruits veggies and lean proteins and milk it will burn most of it, give you energy stop cravings and build muscle easier. You can’t ignore the biological side of us and just worry about the physics (energy expenditure equation). Good luck! Eat healthy

  • This is very confusing, and people trying to look smart and telling us all kind of lies. If you start losing body fat, you will automatically lose weight. Plain and simple. Unless, you start using some kind of product in order to retain hard heavy muscles.

  • Not all calories are equal. For example 300 calories from snickers not same as 300 calories from meat because meat is harder to break down the body will burn calories to digest it.

  • Is roughly 1100 calories a day okay for weight loss? That’s how many I’ve normally eaten after burning 300-500 a day. None of 1100 calories a day is bread btw. I’ve cut that out just because carbs are my main issue. I mainly eat natural carbs (ex.-fruit), proteins, and fats (mostly unsaturated). I’m assuming what I’m doing right now is okay because I can see the difference, feel the difference (can’t grab love handles anymore), and the scale said I lost two pounds and it had only been two days.   • I agree with what you are saying but I would add the caveat that as long as you are aware of the calories, 200cal of broccoli is still better than a 200cal snickers bar.

  • Hey! Thanks for this helpful video. By the way, I notice a lot of people keep on talking about Fenoboci Diet Plan (look on google search engine), but I’m not sure if it’s good. Have you thought about Fenoboci Diet Plan? I’ve heard some great things about it and my sister lost a lot of weight with it, but she refuses to tell me:(

  • For anyone starting to get nutrition in check, I think keeping a food journal is great advice, but a big key for me was that I ate nothing until it was journalized. First, the effort of looking up calories, doing math, etc. made me really ask if I was eating something necessary. I was discouraged from grazing, and when I did take a snack I knew what portion I was allowed. The second thing which followed is, my snack had a plan. By seeing the caloric penalty beforehand, I could decide what portion was worth it. And I wasn’t going to go back and alter my journal after selecting this portion, and admit defeat. So the portion I started with was the portion I ended with. If I was journaling after eating, I would just have been unpleasantly surprised after the fact and found myself discouraged in my efforts.

  • TL;DR your input of calories has to be smaller than your output of burning calories, no matter if its organic food or junk food, calories are calories( better to eat 800 calories of healthy food than 800 calories of empty calories like mcdonalds)

  • Tracking calories is a waste of time. If you eat healthy, don’t eat an absurd amount and exercise, you’ll get fit. If you eat garbage you’ll feel and look like garbage.

  • Just include an hour of walking every day in your life, even on rest days.

    It’s easy, healthy, costs nothing
    Especially these days where we sit all day it’s basically a necessity.
    Another thing you can do, is taking the stairs instead of elevators and escalators.
    These small, and ‘easy’ adjustments might seem pointless in the beginning, but it’ll help you A LOT in the long run, not only with weight loss but with maintaining that weight too.

I’ve been on omad for 5 weeks, weights 3 x weekly and cardio 2 x weekly and only lost 4-5lbs…but…my jeans are looser, I need a belt to keep them up so definitely toning up and gaining a lil muscle. I’m determined to not get disheartened so I’m not weighing myself anymore… I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing and be patient

  • I got stuck with this Im in the middle of an experiment right now. I am eating the exact macros hopefully I will lose fat. I get caught out with peanut butter and jam have to chuck them. I gained three pant sizes which was mortifying. I ran twice a day and it still happened. Hopefully this will work. Otherwise its another problem. Im working on calorie balance.

  • Society makes too big a deal of loosing weight with all special diets and workout methods. The method that I’ve noticed works best however is just too eat normal portions of variations of food and take a walk, jog or whatever you like for how long you like. Just don’t overthink it like society wants you to do and accept that weight loss is supposed to take time. Make it too complicated and too hard on yourself and you are much less likely to accomplish your goals for weight-loss, or even worse; End up exactly where you were before you started. Losing weight is not a quick fix and then you can live like you want after that. Weight loss is a lifestyle you have to commit to for the rest of your life

  • That’s old school junk science that has been DEBUNKED. He fails to include one’s Basil Metabolic Rate, Energy Expenditure of the digestion process. Bottom Line if YOU want to lose body fat, low insulin level s are the way to go. Intermittent Fasting & Keto diet is by far the BEST WAY TO THE BODY YOU WANT

  • I used to eat the “low carb” bun option at my favourite burger joint. One day found out is was HEAPS more calories than plain old bread. Now I eat the bread the only thing heavier is my wallet!

  • Calories are the same no matter where they originate. However, what your body does with those calories depends on both what foods they come from and how many are consumed in a given period of time. One example is the “sugar bomb”, which can be any kind of simple carb. These calories will enter the bloodstream as glucose and be stored in muscle and liver cells as glycogen… until those cells are filled or until cell insulin receptor resistance kicks in. Whenever either of these occurs, insulin shunts remaining blood glucose to belly fat (which is a different animal entirely than normal body fat). The more sugar bombs you have, the more insulin resistant your cells will become. The more insulin resistant your cells become, the more the simple carbs (including sugar) you eat and drink will be shunted off to belly fat. The more the simple carbs you eat are shunted off to belly fat, the more sleepy and/or lethargic and/or brainfoggy and/or hungry you will feel. And what do you suppose you’ll reach for at that point?

    Most of us are simple carb junkies to one degree or another due to insulin resistance (which is similar to alcohol, nicotine or other drug tolerance). It is imperative that we break the simple carb bomb/ insulin resistance cycle. One way to do that is to satisfy a sugar jones by consuming more saturated fats, or “cutting” the carbs with saturated fats. Bread gets buttered for a reason. Dessert comes after the entree. It’s not something that should be consumed alone. “How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?”

    Just never, ever drink simple carbs.

  • You are crrect about the calories but you have to remember you would rather eat brown pasta then a cheeseburger even if they have roughly the same calories as your getting the nutrition benifit from the brown pasta but alot of fat from the cheese burger

  • The first time I heard about this explanation with the water going into fat cells and then emptying (in fact I think it was talking to you) I thought it made perfect sense. But then I realized I typically see the same thing happen in a reverse where things will stay the same and then all of a sudden it’ll jump a pound or more and then it’ll stay there and repeat. So that explanation wouldn’t fly there so not sure if it’s true or not (certainly could be) but regardless it doesn’t change that everything you said here is spot on! The body is so dynamic.

  • Diet Plan known as Custokebon Secrets kept showing up here on different videos and I thought they were scams. However after my mate follow it, and finally lost crazy amounts of weight with it without starving herself. I’m persuaded. You should not take my own word for it, search for Custokebon Secrets on the google search engine.

  • I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the idea of “leptin resistance”? (I’m no expert, I just read blogs and watch youtube videos). My concern is that the body has some say in how many calories it burns (not complete “say” but some say) and if it’s resistant to the leptin hormone that our fat cells are producing, the thought is that it might think we’re “thin enough” and lower our metabolism when we eat too few calories. Do you think that this school of thought has merit?

  • A the end of the day people have to do what’s best for them-selves. What works for you might not work for other people. I’ve been working out for almost 2 months now and I’ve been cut back a lot. I might have a bowl of ice-cream and a waterice, or maybe a little piece of candy, but it’s not every day, It’s probably like once a week, and I can already feel me losing weight just by how my pants and shirts fit.I put on my sisters shirt the other day and I could fit it, I could never ever fit her clothes, and I could fit her shirt the other day. I workout every single day for 30-40 minutes, sometimes an hour, and I’m so proud of myself.

  • I have a question not related to this video per se. On myfitnesspal it recommends me eating 1200 calories to lose weight, and when I go under than number, it says its bad and that I need to hit 1200. Does it slow my metabolism/gain weight if I eat less than 1200 calories? Also if I eat 1200 calories and do cardio and lose 400 calories, wouldn’t it be 1200 cal 400 cal = 800 calories total for the day? If I need to hit 1200 calories, should I eat 400calories back from the cardio I did?

    Because it sounds like at the end of the day, most people need that calorie balance in order to lose or maintain weight. Sorry if this is confusing you. Do I eat that extra 400 calories back after doing cardio, or is it OK to have a net 800 calories only? Or must I maintain a 1200calorie diet?

  • This isn’t mentioned enough and put out there to inform us, thank you. Yes totally get it. It actually happened to me last week again. Then this week the few pounds of water came off and I’m back down to the number on the scale I was on. All with doing the same things I’ve been doing. I guess what helps is mixing things up from time to time.

  • You guys I started at 310 went down to 290 went back up to 295 all within three weeks the scale finally went down to 294 stay the course layoff the scale!!!

  • OMG this is what I needed to hear and keep up with IF, I haven’t lost a single pound �� but I have lost inches. I have tons of energy and work out every day, so I feel great…In the past I knew I has a slow metabolism….so now I will be patient and see if it gets better. Thanks for your tips

    Day 1 Goddamn chloe is no human. The Workout looks easy but i struggled to do all of it. After 3 mins i was out of breath.

  • that’s why people that have cool sculpting will eliminate fat cells in certain area through lymphatic system. but if the diet is unstable, people will still gain body fat in other area.

  • I have to remember that my problem isn’t with the scale but the amount of fat on my body so I shouldn’t focus that much on the number or else it’ll discourage me too much

  • Ok this helped to clarify things. i quit eating sugar a month ago but my weight is staying the same almost, so i was getting confused that what is happening. my belly is shrinking a bit and losing fat or something but i don’t exercise more so it cant be muscle, only change was the sugar.

  • This happened to me for a long time so I stopped doing it. So I guess I have to keep going for a year. I also have a history of doing lots of diets. But I kind of feel useless if I’m not losing weight for a few months. Not going down on the scales. But people say I look slimmer. It’s frustrating, I want to go down fast but it won’t necessarily ������

  • I am so discouraged yesterday when I weighed myself because I’ve gained 7 kilos after doing Keto, IF and also carrying my child to sleep everyday but I feel lighter than before and my shirt was looser. So glad I found this video. I am relieved now. I’ll keep doing what I’ve started.

  • Perfect timing of this video. I’m around 155 with 18% body fat. I’ve been doing morning LISS and dropped my calories slightly thinking it would create a big deficit but it turns out my weight has stayed the same and possibly even higher on some days and I’m seeing noticeable changes in body fat almost every day. Historically, I”ve tried creating bigger deficits but I never lost as much fat as I am now, only muscle despite training heavy and hard. I’m a hardgainer so being able to keep the muscle and maybe even building while has been great. So for me personally, eating around maintenance while creating a very slight deficit only through morning LISS has worked great. Going to keep it up for the next couple months to see where it takes me.

  • Exactly my situation. I’m a 6ft male and I went from 288 to 262 in 3 weeks, but the last couple of days the scale has stopped but I feel like I’m getting thinner. In a calorie deficit every day and cardio and strength training almost everyday. Frustrating sometimes lol

  • I was getting upset. I work out 4/5 days a week.. I do 1 hour of weight lifting and 30 to 40 min of Cardio. Got on the scale this morning and I didn’t lose a pound but gained two. I was devastated because I feel lighter and my midsection is getting so much smaller. My clothes feel different and in the last three weeks, I lost 3.5 inches around my waist. I rarely get on the scale these days because I don’t want to stop working out do to disappointments. As usual, Dr. Berg came through with the knowledge. Heading to the gym to keep loving on myself.

  • Can someone tell me why this morning when I got on the scale it said 247.8 and then gave me all kinds of readings back to 260. I have a huge stall here lately but I broke it the other day and finally got out of the 260’s but I was really shocked this morning. My scale is brand new.

  • I went to my doctor today, super confident that I had lost weight cuz I’ve been dieting and exercising religiously, my clothes are very noticeably looser. I get to the doctor, they weigh me, I’ve gained 7 lbs and I had to listen to the doctor essentially call me a liar, feeling delusional and like I want to jump off a bridge. It is so frustrating because it’s like everything is counter intuitive. You eat to much, gain weight, starve yourself, your metabolism stops, diet and exercise, gain weight but lose inches and don’t know what to do with that conflicting info.

  • Hi hun! I’ve been watching your videos and I’m new to Keto. I trust ur opinion and could use ur sound advice. I have a surgery coming up December 15th. Unfortunately it will cost me about $300 less if I weight 160 or less on that date. I’m currently 173.7 I started Keto about 3 full days ago. I personally don’t care to weigh myself on the scale bcz I know first of all that muscle weighs more than fat and I do workout almost everyday and I’m active all day. I have been doing HIIT exercises and swimming along with using the sauna & steam room. I’ve been going at losing weight since end of August, I was 190 and was calorie counting but bcz I feel like my weight loss progress is too slow I decided to really try Keto. Do u have ANY advice for me that can help me get down to atleast 160 by Dec 15, if I was 150 they would discount me an additional 350. Btw, I am 5’2 age 39. I am thinking of hopping on a week water fast next week. Any thoughts? ����

  • Hi Ashley I just bought coconut oil yesterday and had a tablespoon in my coffee with 1 tbsp Kerrygold butter. I was fine for about an hour and then vomited. I think it was just too much for my system. I want to up my ketones so I want to forget coconut oil except to cook and try MCT oil. What brand do you use?

  • Omgit happened to me a couple of days ago. I was stuck for weeks at the same weight. I noticed my body changing and my clothes felt better but no change on the scale. Then I stepped on a couple of days ago and literally lost 3 lbs and another 1 lbs when I stepped on the scale this morning…I’m happy, others might be losing more, but I seem to lose slower and therefore I will take any loss I can get!!!!!

  • I do OMAD one meal a daySince 2 months. Started at 110 kgs and now I fluctuate between 98-100 kgs, but I am getting thinner visibly and my muscles are growing from the workouts. Feel amazing but not dropping the scale since around 2 weeks. Hope it will start dropping. Thank you for the video

  • Your doctor will still tell you you’re overweight because of the scales. I’ve been doing IF for 2 1/2 months and not lost anything. Those bloomin’ figures on the scales go down 1 or 2 lb but then go back up next day/week. My clothes do feel slightly looser but it’s a bit disheartening when you look at the scales. Plus my waist isn’t shrinking. But the main thing is, if you visit your doctor, they just go by your weight and tell you you need to loose weight. I’m beginning to lose hope.

  • But sometimes you don’t even lose inches. You wear the same size, gain weight in the right places like glutes but then other places feel different, areas we don’t measure like lower back, all of the upper legs, forearm, shoulders, just above the breasts ����‍♀️

  • I lost 9 total in water the first couple weeks, I’m now 6 weeks in and nothing else, nothing. I’m spot on on my macros and I do count calories, they’re also spot on. No inches either, I’m hanging in there but I keep reading about all these loses & am getting discouraged.

  • Great stuff, RedDeltaProject. I’m 6-4, 56 years old. Started Christmas at 260 pounds. As of today, I’m stalled at 205, with a target of 199.99. RRRrrr! So this week I’m at “Fat Camp.” Ha! That means all meals prepared ahead of time at target calories, all veggies and plenty of protein. Got it all in Tupperware at the dojo I own. Not going to darken the door of my kitchen at home, since we have kids—and thus tons of pasta and all kinds of “treats” that they’ll burn off but I won’t. I will break this stall if it’s the last thing I do! Thanks for the objective, common-sense message about emotions. I get “snack psychosis” on weekends. I HATE that! Emotions. Food addiction. Man are you ever RIGHT about the emotional stuff!

  • Seven months on keto and noticed the step-like weight reduction. The plateau lasts 2-4 weeks then “whoosh”! The medical profession has a lot to learn from patients by listening to them: I only learnt of this effect today, after reading about 30 books and watching dozens and dozens of YouTube videos. Ashley, you’re a national treasure.

  • Ok I needed this. I’ve been working out for two months and I do intermittent fasting as well and I’m losing inches around my arms, waist, face, and thighs. However, the scale is saying I’m weighing 5 pounds more than I very first started. I eat pretty healthy (allergic to dairy so my diet is really clean) and don’t consume a lot of calories during the day. I’ll give it till April tho

  • I love this doctor so much!!! I’ve only lost 5lbs so far doing keto, but I’ve gone from wearing a 2XL shirt to only a Large, my waist has gone from a 44in to 38in and my clothes are becoming more baggier. My own doctor told me to ignore the scale for the time being and I was hardheaded. I workout 5 days a week and I was like…why am I not losing anything? But this explained so much!

  • I thought the weighing scale is wrong but I went several weighing and it’s the same. I.lost inches and I wear clothes I was not able to wear before but weight is not going down

  • It’s funny. Fat loss for me is always preceeded by my physique looking worse. Then out of nowhere it looks 10x better.

    So when I take periodic progress pics and I suddenly look heavier, I know I’m in for a positive change soon.

  • So Don’t take in more calories (energy, fat, sugars, carbs), than your body uses daily, so the excess calories (energy, fat, sugars, carbs) don’t get stored on or in your body parts as fat (excess calories, energy, for later uses)

  • It’s my third week and I’ve already lost my PCOS belly and my face looks different. Surprisingly, I’ve gained weight but lost many inches… so I guess this is normal? Before keto, my BMI was very high for someone short like me. I’m hoping to go back to 120lbs.

  • Ashley, we live fairly close to one another, and I would like to know if you have heard of any keto friendly doctors in our area. My primary doctor is concerned about my LDL and referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist is anti-keto and advised me to stop eating saturated fats and focus on mono only. She basically only wants me to eat seafood as my main source of protein. She ordered a series of tests and I will probably go one more time. So far everything else is looking great, as in high HDL, low trigs, pattern A, and a zero coronary calcium score.

  • I look at my weekly and monthly weight loss and don’t let the daily effect me. My path to fitness has centered around this data:

    1. The mirror
    2. My clothes
    3. My weight

  • I’m confused a little because I’m 4’11 I’m 200 lbs and in some videos OMAD you say to do on average 86g of fat but then in another you say do 70g so you can really burn your own fat. I’m so lost now. And my protein is around 72 grams based on the.36 method from your videos and sometimes my hair seems to be falling out as well I keep my carbs at 5-10 depending on how I feel daily

  • I have lost a total 35 lbs. since starting Keto in February. This week I stepped on the scale and gain 3 lbs. back! I was so confused. I was a 12 and now I’m a 2 (sometimes even a 0) so I don’t understand what’s happening! Thank you for this Dr. Berg.

  • I started at 175lbs and within 2 weeks was at 164. It seems like the weight loss was greatest in the 1st week (I lost 7 lbs the 1st week). But I am losing inches on the keto diet.
