Fad dieting makes you feel bad. Fad dieting can cause diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, headaches, dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, constipation, nausea, and vomiting. Fad diets can make you sick. Crash diets rob your body of vitamins and minerals and may actually make you.

Most often, fad diets involve the elimination of dairy, wheat/grains, and carbs (whatever that includes). Although the results of fad diets may come quick and be drastic, they are not sustainable. Within a few weeks of starving yourself of key nutrients, you will likely end up binging on all the unhealthy foods you worked to avoid in the first.

You get caught up in their gimmicks and hype, imagining yourself in a thin, svelte body, and, before you know it, you’re entering your credit card information online, telling yourself that this is the last time you have to. One of the most important points is that fad diets are not necessary; the best evidence that we have so far in relation to diet and health shows that adopting a Mediterranean style diet can have a protective effect on: obesity risk, heart disease risk, diabetes risk and from certain kinds of cancer8. Though fad diets typically promise quick and easy weight loss, they seldom live up to the hype.

However, these 8 fad diets actually work.

  • Christina!! Thank you so much for this!! I have nasty autoimmune issues too (mainly Dysautonomia) and I get so fed up with everyone telling me what I shouldn’t eat. I actually did eliminate several things (out of desperation!) and got way worse, so I super appreciate your take on this. It’s a lot better than some other peoples’, lol (No names, of course ;))
