Is this something you see yourself sticking to lifelong and making it a lifelong habit? Is it truly actually helping you?” These are the questions Erika Graziani, an outpatient nutrition program coordinator with Lee Health, recommends asking before making changes to your diet. “I always say think of something that’s more realistic for you and something that you really can stick with,” said Graziani.. It’s important to recognize fad diets. “They are always going to claim quick weight loss; it’s always quick. Usually, there are strict rules involved; typically things sound too good to be true,” she said.. While fad diets are popular, health experts say they can be dangerous. “The issue is, while you can lose weight quickly or at first, if you lose weight quickly, it’s mostly muscle and water, and if we lose our muscle mass our metabolism slows,” said Graziani.. When you develop a slower metabolism, you’re at risk for gaining back more weight than you lost. “A lot of the fads now tend to be generally very low carb, very high protein and or high fat,” she said.. A popular fad diet now is the Keto diet. “The Keto is really not even designed to be a fad weight loss diet. It’s very strict. It can lead to deficiencies and all kinds of issues, and it just puts such an abrupt change to your metabolism,” said Graziani.. Instead of a fad diet, health experts say focus more on making healthy changes to your eating habits like taking out processed foods and eating more vegetables. “When you lose only one to two pounds a week, and you lose it slower, people tend to keep it off,” she said..
