If you eat below your resting metabolic rate, then your body is going to slow the metabolism. It does this to protect you, so that you can live longer. It has no idea your on diet. Most women do this and make their metabolism sluggish. Then, you get to whine about how your metabolism is in the crapper.

Why Your Fat Loss Is in the Crapper When someone refers to your metabolism, it is referring to the process of converting the food and drink you’ve consumed into energy your body can use. The speed at which your body utilizes this energy (calories) is known as your metabolic rate. If you’re concerned about slow metabolism and your weight, talk to your doctor about healthy changes you can make.

And if you still think you have slow metabolism, your doctor can check your metabolism or check for rare conditions that can cause problems with metabolism and weight, such as an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), Cushing syndrome or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Probably not. There is definitely a thing called slow metabolism, but in a very rare case, it can hinder your weight loss process. Weight loss is mostly dependent on the diet you follow, the type of exercise you perform, your genetics, medication you take, your sleeping habits and other things.

So it’s a double challenge if you have a slow metabolism and you want to lose body fat. Your slow metabolism makes it difficult to lose the fat, but the fat makes it difficult to speed up your. ASIDE FROM making you out of shape, high-fat diets are bad for the heart and other vital organs. Often, the slowdown of the body’s metabolism has been blamed on inactivity or a sedentary lifestyle.

Proof of this lies when the body does the opposite. Canadian researchers report that dieters with the most organochlorines (pollutants from pesticides, which are stored in fat cells) experience a greater than normal dip in metabolism as they lose. Frequently consuming sugar-sweetened beverages may slow down your metabolism. In a 12-week controlled study, overweight and obese people who consumed 25% of their calories as fructose-sweetened.

  • I was a little chubby as a kid and no diet ever worked for me, but when i turned 13 i started losing weight massively, without a single change in my diet or what i ate. I still dont know what happened, but it turns out i got to the point that i was freaking skinny i could eat whatever i wanted without worryng about it, i seriously ate pretty much 99% carbs and sugar in my diet. As i spent my childhood being overweight which affected me psychologically, i worry about losing this “magic”, specially after gaining some pounds (lean mass) bc of a medical treatment i had. Can someone tell me if my story is possible and if i can lose this at any moment in my life? Idk if i always had a fast metabolism, or if i won it as a miracle or something, or if it came along with puberty. The last statement doesnt make sense, ik lots of friends who were and still are chubby until today. Can someone help me or give me some light here?? This seems like a weird af situation

  • Just a question regarding reverse dieting you have said to try increasing by around 50cal per week but it’s not clear if you mean 50cal extra daily or 50cal extra total for the week. I checked questions on your reverse dieting video in the link above but there are conflicting answers when this was asked before (one you said to increase 50cal on one day each week and another you said to do (for example) 1900cal/day week one, 1950cal/day week two, etc.).   • Lol I needed this, back in high school I was fit and 210-220’ish lbs and use to eat a whole lot and never gained weight, and then senior year and college happened where I wasn’t or hardly active and my fatass now weighs 270lbs ������ luckily I don’t look bad, but still wholy shit I need to lose weight and get my metabolism going again

  • During the first 2 ish months of lockdown I found myself (accidentally) massively under eating as I was sleeping through breakfast then only eating lunch and dinner and a few hundred calories in snacks and protein shakes (about 1,600-1,800 total calories taken in per day) as well as burning roughly 500 a day through cardio. I’m 18, am 5ft 11 and 140 pounds and believe my maintenance calories was somewhere between 2,000 and 2,400 so I was clearly in a massive deficit for a very long period of time, and have lost 2 stone since last summer. Now as my gym is opening soon I’m looking to get back into weight training and therefore consuming more calories, does anybody have any advice for how I can decrease my deficit whilst not gaining a massive amount of weight due to my presumably broken BMR?

  • I’m 51 & I’ve been trying to eat protein since I was a child. I cannot digest it & tbh, eating the corpse of an animal utterly sickens me so that’s not going to happen (ever again I used to have to lie down after I ate when I was a child. We were a 3 meat & one veg family). I can barely eat a single egg once a month. If I really push it, and I’m fairly well, I can eat one maybe a week…. maybe. Even beans make me feel sick. I’ve tried protein shakes MILLIONS of times. Again, I have to be pretty well to do that. I can’t keep doing this. It’s taking me longer & longer to recover. What on earth can I do?
    (I suffer from chronic migraine/headaches daily, fibromyalgia, PVImmune dysfunction fatigue syndrome, IBS, MCS etc). Due to meds, I’m now gaining weight & painkillers don’t help, neither do my hormones which are out of whack, plus I’m heading into ‘that’ time of life. VERY scary. I often eat one meal a day. My head makes my tummy feel like a rock, eating is always hard work. Help please. It’s hard enough to keep fit & healthy when you don’t have health issues, but try it when you’re not in an optimal starting position!!!

  • Thomas, I drink ACV (2Tbl spoon) with 10oz of hot water to which I add the juice of a half lemon, teaspoon of turmeric, teaspoon of cinnamon, teaspoon of ginger and a pinch of fresh ground black pepper. It tastes good. I love it.

  • Thomas Delauer, you are a genius but you get so in depth that although I can follow you I have a hard time filing the information in my head. If you haven’t already you need to make up video and book packages targeted at different groups. with a sort of over all weight loss/muscle growth/general health overview organizing the basic must do advice from the more advanced stuff. I am a cheap bastage but if you did one for over 40s that could sort of be my health/weight loss/workout bible, I would buy one.

So I eat healthy fish like sardines, shrimp, healthy salmon etc… I’ve noticed an initial drop in my weight but now I’m climbing back up:( How can I boost my protein and limit my carb intake while going mostly ovo/lacto vegetarian?   • I have been struggling with anorexia for the last 7 years. Went from 38kg up to 49kg. But I still struggle with calories. I workout 5 times a week and eat healthy and try my best to eat enough calories but it seems like my stomach holds all the fat and doesn’t want to lose it. If I under eat it stays flat but as soon as I go on 0 calories in vs out or try to add calories to build more muscles it looks bigger and bigger. I’m so afraid to add even more calories as it triggers my anorexia and I start under eating again. =(

  • Hi Thomas, I always enjoy your video’s and your focus on a healty eating pattern rather than an eating pattern that will make you look good really connects with me. Could you do a video on fixing a fast metabolism some time? I’m eating a minimum of 4000kcal a day, high quality foods, taking care of my sleep and stress, strenght training 3-4 times a week and I still can’t seem to gain weight.   • Hi Marisa, I am worried about lifting weights because I don’t want to have any large/bulky muscles. While your muscles look beautiful and toned, i am assuming you are 5,4” or under with an hourglass fugue. It will not look the same on me… a 5’10” tall straight framed woman. I would look unfeminine.     (18hr)
    And 36 hr fast every 6 month.
    Though its from religious aspect.
    And add turmeric in almost everything as our food culture.

  • This video kinda discouraged me. I actually like to run and it’s my main form of exercise right now. I usually run for 40 minutes and then do 20 minutes stretching and 20-30 minutes of arms, back or abs if my muscles aren’t sore. Now I am feeling like I am doing this all wrong, but this is really working for me mentally so I honestly don’t think I could or want to spend 60 minutes lifting weights. I am so confused on what to do. I have lost 13 pounds in 6 weeks doing this but I am scared my metabolism is ruined now so I will just gain it back.

  • I absolutely love this advice. For a long time I was losing a lot of weight but my problem was that I had to keep eating lower and lower calories to maintain it. And since quarantine I have gained 20 pounds back but instead of going on keto or keto vegan or Rob vegan or a short term diet I am working very hard to build muscle. Because I noticed thatI already eat over my calories because I have gained weight back so now I am using those extra calories to build muscle I’m literally trying to even out my metabolism so I have more muscle that will eat away the fat. I do not allow myself to do cardio I focus solely on weightlifting.

  • Honestly, it’s a lot to do with genes and intense activities you did as a child (5-10yrs old) to build your muscle structure like swimming or gymnastics, they tend to stay for life. Some ppl genetically store more fat than muscle (like people whose ancestors lived in cold climates to survive winters). Calorie counting will help very little, you will always have to work out to maintain weight loss, you will never just be slim, unfortunately, you missed that childhood window.

  • I run about 25-30 mile a week with one tempo and one HIIT run in that week. I’ve ran several marathons and mini marathons, and I did cross country and track in high school. I also strength training, but I’m worried the cardio I’m doing is slowing me down. I’ve been stuck at 1000-1100 calories, and when I increase I just gain weight. Should I stop the cardio?

  • Love your videos. I am currently doing Muay Thai training three times a week as well as intense dancing (both of which are mostly cardio), yoga everyday and 25 minutes of resistance training daily as well.

    I am doing so much because It has reduced my anxiety and really made me happy. Also, I do not have a lot of resistance training equipment at home so I have been using water bottles and gallons to build up. And I don’t generally go to gyms so cardio feels more in my comfort zone.

    But watching this video I was wondering if I am not overdoing it and slowing my metabolism too much. Anyways… thank you for this, I will consider everything.

    MissFitAndNerdy Do you know the thermic effect of food.. or the percentage increase of energy expenditure of food with high fiber content?.. I mean something like vegetables rich in Fibre? (Broccoli, spinach, artichoke,etc. / not necessarily grains or bread). It would be interesting to know. I googled it and found several studies but non that mentioned fibre in specific, all where fats, carbohydrates and protein as you mentioned on the video. Hope you see the question, thanks!!

    Say you plan to add 50 calories per week to daily intake, can that be done as a daily thing? I.e monday 1200 calories, tuesday 1210, Wednesday 1220 etc.. and just be as effective? If not better ��‍♀️����‍♀️

  • i have never really understood whether DIT is factored into calorie counts. for example 20g of protein contains 80 kcal. Does that mean 80 net calories or net 64 kcal.

  • This is it!!!! Over the past 3 months my insulin levels went from 12 to 13 to 17!!!! How are the insulin levels increasing when I am being “healthier” and cutting carbs significantly? 06/01/2020 to 07/01/2020 I ate 1431 cals a per day on omad and averaged 26g of carbs per day. I gained 5lbs. I’m 5’7 and 255. The weight should have fallen off. This video explains why. My insulin levels increased in June. I am dropping my protein to 75g or less per day.

    I just did a 60 hour fast and had my insulin levels retested. I’m interested to see if my levels went down. I dropped from 256 to 251 in 3 days. When I broke the fast I did 2 meals 75% fat and 83g of total protein (over 75 but definitely under the 120g in a single meal from before). Dropped 1lb the next day.

  • Well, cardio is a tool you can use, cause getting really lean you cant cut calories forever. Not to mention that once you get used to it, it is an even better tool at keeping your BF percentage low. I believe in eating right, strenght and cardio training. The holy trinity 😉

  • From the viewpoint of evolutionary fitness, a slow metabolism is advantageous. You should aim for the highest healthy ( and thus optimal ) body fat percentage possible.
    Which for men would be 18-19ish % and for women around 32% and a functional amount of muscle mass ( being able to pulland push your bodyweight effortlessly.

  • Of course all those points in trying to get more metabolism and losing fat are critical and complex. It’s not like a linear function. I definitely feel more energized after lifting. Cardio is definitely good if you haven’t exercised in a long time but for adding muscle it is not good. Lately there have been workouts that I have done which are mostly fat burning since the Fitbit app you can add workouts on there and it tells you what most of your workout is in which zone.

  • 1. Lift heavy things (resistance training) | 2. You need to make sure you get enough sleep! | 3. Eating enough calories (reverse dieting + resistance training helps with metabolic rate), eat enough protein thermic effect, eat enough B vitamins (especially critical).

  • @Jeska I have two and they are 2 years apart(1&3) they are terrible sleepers and I am trying so hard to get back to my pre baby weight as well….but lifting with dumbells and if I dont have time to execute that I do hiit with bodyweight exercises and bands. In jan I started the cliche get into shape goal but with long term thoughts in mind a d so far i am down from 195 to 182 but in fat i believe that number is higher cause I’ve put on some muscle. Hope that inspires you!

  • Too much protein is bad according to Dr. Becky Gillaspy. She says that if you take in more protein than your body can use it has to be excreted which is hard on your kidneys, or your body converts it to glucose.   • Change your diet but dont diet. Know what is good and what is crap. Whole foods and single ingredient foods are best. Grain and sugar are to be avoided as much as possible. I.F is a must to control diet whether its 12/12, 16/8, 20/4 or 23/1(1 meal a day). These things in combination will melt fat.

  • Lower cortisol by taking poppy seeds and adaptogens. Poppy seeds clean up cortisol, help the body relax and improve sleep. Full of nutrients too.

    Add a lot of fiber by eating about 10 moringa seeds per day in batches of 5 at a time, preferably 30 mins to an hour before a meal so that if your stomach runs due to the fiber then you don’t lose most of the nutrients your meals provide. Experiment with the number of seeds that’s comfortable for you. Moringa seeds also have lots of nutrients.

    This blended mixture has helped me a lot in dealing with fatty liver/insulin resistance issues:

    2 cups of ACV(metabolism etc)
    1 cup honey ( break insulin resistance. etc)
    1/2 cup lemon juice
    2 tbs poppy seeds (to clean up cortisol, improve sleep quality, etc)
    3 tbs milk thistle seeds (for the liver, kidneys and brain, etc)
    2 tbs triphala powder (for the liver and fat burner, etc)
    2 tbs cinnamon (blood sugar regulation, fat burner, etc)
    1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (fat burning, etc)
    5 10 cloves of fresh garlic (fat burner, etc)
    fresh ginger root same amount as garlic (fat burner, etc)
    100 ml aloe vera juice (natural preservative, etc)

    Blend thoroughly until liquid like, store in a container and take a tablespoon when you wake up(after brushing your teeth since ACV might weaken tooth enamel), before and after a meal and when going to bed at night. Also, this mixture target several organs. For the bladder you might want to add 1/2 cup of prune juice for instance. If you find the mixture too strong, then drink some water after taking it.

    Remember that plants have more than one benefit. In this case, we are interested in burning fats, assisting the liver work better, lowering cortisol and correcting insulin resistance long term. So dont expect overnight results, though it might happen to some. However, this reduces bloating too. The same mixture can be used to strengthen the immune system or fight pathogens for instance or general daily body cleanse.

I just started a 30 day distilled water fast only consuming bone broth once everythree days and micro blended greens and veggies once a week with occasional shots of apple cider vinegar also one teaspoon of minced garlic turmeric and ginger every other day.

  • Hi I would like to ask one question, I have adrenal fatigue, I have LOT OF salt crawings I eat like 400-500 % more salt than regular person Just to be pleased with salinity. Does it mean that my body dont have any aldosterone which can hold sodium in body? I have mostly time low blood pressure, I have started to drink lemon+himalayan salt in water + vitamine C I am wonder if I am helping my self.. it is 3 days and I am fatigued more than before. When you talked about aldosterone, when it is realased, cortisol is realased aslo to the body.. so when I drink 0,5 L of lemon water + salt in it, my body wants to keep that sodium in my body and then realase aldosteron also with cortisol and thats make me more fatigued? I am not on keto, I know that when I am on keto I have to eat more salt, I am on low carb but not keto, but despite that.. my body do not hold any of salt.. My adrenals are not healing it self.. my fat digestion is terrible.. Dont know how to help myself.. Trying to keep blood sugar levels low but not in ketosis which is burden of adrenals it makes them work harder just to produce cortisol to keep blood sugar at the normal range ( when it is low it make cortisol to boost blood sugar.. ) what I am supposed to do..
