The ketogenic diet is an effective weight loss diet that’s well-supported by evidence. It is very filling and usually does not require calorie counting. Some studies, in fact, suggest that a ketogenic diet is safe for significantly overweight or obese people. However, other clinical reviews point out that patients on low-carbohydrate diets regain. The ketogenic diet has been around for more than 100 years when it was developed for the treatment of severe epilepsy.Doctors at the time noticed that short-term starvation helped patients to control their seizures but this wasn’t a safe or convenient option for everyone, particularly children.

The ketogenic diet (keto) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that causes weight loss and provides numerous health benefits. This is a detailed beginner’s READ MORE. Many doctors and dietitians believe more studies are needed to determine whether the keto diet is a safe weight-loss method over a long period of time. Melissa Fossier, a registered dietitian at Children’s Health℠, does NOT recommend the keto diet for children and teens – unless it’s used only for specific medical reasons. The ketogenic diet (keto) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that causes weight loss and provides numerous health benefits.

This is a detailed beginner’s guide. An upcoming study will look at the ketogenic diet as a weight maintenance strategy. The downsides: While the research is exciting, there’s very little evidence to show that this type of eating is effective — or safe — over the long term for anything other than epilepsy. In addition, the initial rapid weight loss on ketogenic diets comes from a diuretic effect, but this water weight always returns when fluid balance normalizes after ketosis ends. It’s also theorized that ketogenic diets may work by affecting appetite-regulating hormones, or that ketones themselves act as an appetite suppressant. The ketogenic, or keto, diet is popular as a way to help people lose weight. But is it a safe, effective method to keep diabetes under control? Scientists are still studying how the diet affects.

The ketogenic diet is quite restrictive. Research supports this eating pattern for epilepsy when managed along with a health care team, since its treatment can be very complex. However, with regards to the keto diet as a tool for weight loss and other health benefits, the jury is still out.

Ive kept most of the weight off since coming off the diet, only gaining water weight, despite eating all the bad stuff from time to time.   • I have adopted a Keto Diet in June last year. I went from twelve and a half stone to eleven stones and it has stayed off. My season allergies (30+ years) have all but disappeared as have most of my skin tags. I don’t really feel restricted, I stop for a couple of days every now and again for the excuse to eat a bit of milk chocolate and ice cream so this has become a rare treat. I can eat all cruciferous vegetables and probably eat many more greens and nutricious low carb vegetables than before but the same quantity of meat. I can have dark chocolate (85% +) and I have cream on berries for pud. I use stevia or monkfruit sweetner instead of sugar and there’s not much difference in the taste. I have cut out potatoes, rice, pasta, sugar, wheat and some higher carb veg. Dr Eric Berg explains the importance of eating lots of low carb veggies for health.

  • I am 17M, i have been doing keto diet for around 4 months, and have losed 24 pounds but one risk you will need to take while doing keto diet is you will have hemorrhoids sooner or later cause of fibers, and fibers are mostly carbohydrates except some fruit, and vegetables which you can’t eat during keto diet, so i won’t recommend doing keto nonetheless i am changing my next diet plan to intermittent.

I suffered from gut issues, anxiety, hormonal womanly time issues, rash out breaks for years. And now all symptoms seem to have seized. The best feeling in the world.     I have a query if you can solve my doubt please.

    I live in Asia.

    I have had hyperthyroidism in 2019.

    Doctors gave me radioiodine(drops).

    My physician advised me to take Thyroxine 50 mcg with Accuracy and Motilium until 15th of April of 2020 and then visit him again but now because of the current situation, every thing has been complicated.

    I can not visit him now.

    Hospital or my physicion do not respond to my question because they are busy with the bigger problem, you know.

    Now my question is,

    should I keep continue to take these medicines especially Thyroxine?

    should I leave or reduce the quantity of these medicines?

  • This person is not educated in basic metabolism principles. She does not know that saturated fats are burned by the body when insulin is low enough like it is on a Ketogenic diet when carbohydrate intake per day is 20 grams or less.

    It is simple and fundamental principle that we’re talking about here. When in a Ketogenic state, the body burns those mentionned “bad fats” which by the way are not bad. They are actually healthy but have been demonized when fats and the accompanying cholesterol were incorrectly picked as the cause of health issues.

  • Keto is excellent for diabetes, metabolic syndrome, weight loss, etc. long term. You can add the foods you like or choose substitutes. Lots of unhealthy video people want to pour water on it to sell their bad diet plans. Check out reddit communities for keto: Lots of diabetics there; PCOS, kidney stone, gallbladder, etc. people there too. There are lots of studies on keto.

    I’ve got psoriasis and it’s worsened quite a lot over the last few months.

    In one of his video’s KenDBerryMD advised people to avoid inflammatory foods or products (dairy, seed-based, tobacco, gluten, alcohol) in order to avoid indirect inflammation of the skin.

    On the end of his video ‘psoriasis: 7 things to avoid’ he mentions a paleo or ketogenic diet would help achieve to minimize the amount of ‘toxins’ which could cause this inflammation.

    I also have asthma which shows my body likes to act up for no reason. What’s your take on this diet to avoid indirect inflammation of the skin?

  • My question is. For the average healthy individual is a keto diet just as effective as a normal balanced diet.
    I am vegeterian so I try to eat the necesseray amount of carbs whenever possible.

  • Keto is the worst diet even for losing weight. No body became obese in a few weeks. So it’s a bad idea to lose weight quickly as it can significantly increase chances of gallstones. It’s a dehydrating diet where chances of muscle loss is increased especially on prolonged ketosis.

  • I am on the keto diet, its the only diet where I am never hungry and never feel the urge to cheat. I have lost a lot of weight including belly fat. I eat plenty of salads and veg, fish, eggs and meat. Its an amazing diet, I have never felt healthier with more energy, plus no more aches and pains due to reduction of inflammation in the body because of sugars and carbs!

  • I followed this a few years ago, lost a LOT of weight and put my diabetes into remission. But you are right it’s restrictive and I ended up back where I was before after “falling off the wagon”. I’m now following a more balanced way of eating and already lost 3 stone and diabetes readings aren’t far off being safe again. And I don’t feel restricted

  • the keto diet is temporary to lose weight but it is not a lifestyle. you should not be keto forever but I don’t consider it bad I tried it and it worked for me once I archive my weight goal I switch to a different diet that keeps my weight.

  • I haven’t followed the Keto diet but I did cut out a lot of processed sugar so now well under recommended free sugars a day, that alone helped lose weight and improve stomach health

  • I don’t use Keto to loose weight. I use it to help control my blood sugar and as a T1 Diabetic it’s been tremendously successful in reducing my A1c from 7.5+ to 5.8. Yes, I’ve lost 25+ pounds, and kept off for but that’s not motivation.
