How Excess Belly Fat Can Change Your Brain. There’s plenty of research on the health hazards of belly fat when it comes to coronary artery disease and cardiovascular issues, and researchers believe the association might be related to blood sugar processing and inflammation. All of this can add up to changes in brain function that can affect mood, hunger signals, stress response and much more. Also, the recent study highlights the fact inflammation may lower brain volume, and that could have an effect on how your brain operates. Carrying extra fat around your waist raises your risk for multiple diseases, including heart disease and diabetes, and now a January 2019 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Neurology.

Excess belly fat can probably shrink the grey matter volume in your brain, a new study finds. Grey matter contains most of the brain’s 100 billion nerve cells, while the white matter is filled. Among men, excess stomach fat initiated changes in a different type of white blood cell: basophils.

This white blood cell variation in men appeared to account for about half of the connection between fat and fluid intelligence in males. Study participants with a high concentration of fat around their midsection, referred to as visceral fat, experienced a much higher likelihood of decreased grey matter in the brain. This shrinkage is a precursor to memory loss and other cognitive issues.

Managing your weight is not simply about looking better. The findings, which take all the fun out of dad bod, suggest that men with more belly or visceral fat tend to also have less grey matter—which contains most of the brain’s nerve cells, as well as areas responsible for muscle control, hearing, memory, emotions, speech, decision making, and self-control. The study, from the United Kingdom, found that people who were obese and had a high waist-to-hip ratio (a measure of belly fat) had slightly lower brain volumes, on average.

  • so much information eat dont eat, fast dont fast, skip breakfast, eat one meal a day, avoid grains, then eat whole grains, go vegan then dont eat vegetables as plant based diets now cause dementia.
    eat only carbs in the evening or eat only vegetables yet they are spayed with more chemicals just like food is pumped with chemicals best not to eat anything.

    we will end up vitamin deficient so now being over weight is better as we get older to avoid the diet face and nutrient loss face. I have heard so much information I find it fascinating with these anti ageing creams they have today I would like to see it used on a live 100 year old model and watch their skin turn to the same texture a s a 12 year old within 10 minutes.

    I have seen thin fit healthy people die of heart attacks vegan eaters get cancer seen thin people have stokes I have seen over weight people with no issues I wish I had one clear answer on how to live my life I have done fads never touched alcohol until I was about 30 (until I got pressured…)I have never smoked however and I have done days of not eating fasting etc then ive had years of eating junk food then years of protein only meat etc 

    I was at the happiest and felt better eating chocolate and drinking 😉
    starving myself and avoiding 99% of food I suffered mental issues and panic attacks because I couldn’t find anything that was good for me there was always something that was bad.
    even the best super food will have something that is bad for me.

    I have been through surgical operations and today I am suffering with liver and pancirus.
    i consume probiotics and do intermittent dieting I am a lot better and take Apple cider vinegar that improves my body alkalinity and enjoy comedy movies and avoit, stressful situation and worry so I won’t secrete Allison menotolin and dopomin and have healed my bloating and on the upside without treatment. thanx any advice will b highly appreciated John

  • This is a very modern mix of clickbait, soundbites, propaganda, cherry-picked confirmation bias. I do agree with the central premise of ‘gut has significant influence on behaviour and brain’ though wtf do I know anyway, to even have an opinion? but I’d want a more nuanced, rigorous, ‘complex/ambivalent’ approach (note the use of ‘more’: just less certainty projected as religious dogma). Ted talks where speakers charmingly/self-effacingly/manipulatively project Truth looks a bit pseudo-science to me. That’s a shame, Ruairi I think you’d make a compelling case if you weren’t so amazed with yourself at how you’ve charmed your audience… Sadly, Ted has become a place where speakers dispense narrow, ‘unambiguous’ Truths in chunks.   • here’s a few suggestions for stopping drinking at home
    Try eating food when you are drinking this cuts down the amount you drink.
    Take a break from alcohol.
    Make a note of how much you drink, then you know if you are cutting down.
    Set yourself goals don’t make them too hard at first.
    Pick one or two days or each week when you will not drink at all. Next, try to stop drinking for one week each month.

  • @ 31:11 Excess Carbohydrates from the Sugar in the Coke and the Wheat in the buns/rolls that the burger is in, is the root cause of the weight gain. Meat and Fat eaten on it’s own isn’t going to cause weight gain, however, I have seen Sugar added to some Bacon and Chicken in Supermarkets, which really isn’t in the farmed natural product and shouldn’t be added; so not sure if the fast food outlets do the same. To avoid weight gain and cure themselves of Carbohydrate related diseases (of which there are many) people turn to LCHF/Low-Carb or Carnivore where the safe Carbohydrates consumed are Vegetables as far as LCHF/Low-Carb is concerned. In the scheme of things Carbohydrates are not essential because the body can process non-Carbohydrate food via the Gluconeogenesis process, which yes outputs Glucose, which is the only form of fuel that one’s Mitochondria require.
