But my doctor is worried about my LDL’s being 4.5 and suggested statins which I won’t do! My Tri’s are 0.8 and my HDL is 2.39. Should I be worried about my LDL’s.   • Very inspiring. But at around 1:25 there’s the comment about being a bit embarrassed. This is important for everyone. If you’ve got on a bike, or put on a pair of trainers, or in any way taken the first steps to improving your life, then you have absolutely no reason to be embarrassed. While you’re making the effort, those that might mock, usually are not. When I go out on my bike, I see people wobbling along on brand new super cheap bikes, obviously just starting out. I have as much respect for them as I do for the lycra clad athletes on multi thousand pound bikes, because they’re making the effort, and that always deserves respect.

  • Mine is 2.3 mg ratio, triglycerides to HDL. I had gotten if of keto for about a month, had my sugar crash one day to 68mg/dl. Had to eat dextrose to spike sugar. Said enough of that. Back on keto for me and want to stick with it.

  • Thank you for talking about water loss! Most people think that sweating equals weight loss, but actually fat is lost through exhaling burnt up fat tissue in the form of carbon dioxide and other gases. Just because you sweat, you won’t lose more fat…

  • Thanks for the great info. I’m so hoping I can get an answer from someone on this. Little background. I’m a 55 year old female. I workout at least 30 min everyday (mixed routines cardio, resistance, yoga, circuit, HIIT, etc.). I have been on a low carb (non-complex carbs), high fat (although lean meat), very low sugar, etc. I recently received my lipid panel results. I had also asked for an NMR test. Here are my results: LDL-C 159 VLDL 9 HDL 46 (mom’s HDL has always been low as well), TRIs 46. Total Cholesterol is 211. Although many docs would say I’m ‘borderline,’ I’m guessing these #s show that I eat more healthy fats. That’s true. HOWEVER… this is the confusing part. My NMR results who LDL-P is 2116 and my small particles are at 776!!!! WTH? If my Tris and VLDL are low, how are these numbers showing extreme risk. I did the MESA calculation and it’s 1.4% (using my CAC # in this formula). Thoughts? Thank you so much.

  • I have a family friend who got gastric bypass everyone was so excited for her and she really thought it was gonna change her life but after the surgery she found ways to overeat without throwing up, she blended meals and ate tons of little meals she now weighs more than before the surgery she makes me mad because of how selfish she is takes no responsibility for anything in her life people really need to get to the mental roots of their problems or they won’t succeed

  • My husband and I are carnivore dieters, formerly strict keto dieters. We love Dr. Mason’s talks, we are thrilled to witness a young and enthusiastic physician in the vanguard, sharing this vital information. My sole issue is that we’ll get about two minutes into one of Dr Mason’s talks, and my husband falls soundly asleep. He confesses the Dr’s voice is very soothing and it lulls him into unconsciousness. Every. Single. Time. This breaks my heart, because I truly want my husband to hear this information. It’s very specific to him because he’s had a silent heart attack, received four stents, and we went keto intentionally to bring his lipids under control, which worked for our two years on keto. However, as a carnivore, his cholesterol has risen 100 points in the last seven months. We are working through this with his GP and cardiologist after his recent blood work. His cardiologist wants him to go on an all-plant diet. That’s not going to happen. Meanwhile, we started monitoring his carb/protein/fat macros at 0/25/75. We’re hoping more fat will bring down his cholesterol ratio.

  • Im in the US.This time last year I was on the high end of my ideal weight (140 lbs and 5’5″) and my cholesterol levels were borderline high. Since January, I’ve been doing a fairly loose keto diet, mainly cutting sugar completely and keeping carbs to 20 to 40 per day with moderate fat and protein plus green vegetables. At this time now, I’ve dropped 23 lbs and all of my cholesterol levels are optimal. Total cholesterol at 181, triglycerides at 127, LDL at 88, and HDL at 68!

  • My lipid profile pattern was similar to the example patient was a bit worried about how high my total cholesterol was. But I looked at my TH:HDL ratio and it’s 0.24. Loving keto!

  • First of all, I was under the impression that high insulin levels were very bad for you. And yet here he is saying that high insulin causes the liver to make LDL receptors and take up LDL. So we want high insulin levels? I dont get it?

  • Does the triglycerides test have to be done fasted? I’ve done my bloodwork unfasted and as my doctor said it does not matter, and results were not that great.
    Triglyceride 2.61 mmol/L
    HDL Cholesterol 1.33 mmol/L
    LDL Cholesterol 6.5 mmol/L
    Triglyceride / HDL Cholesterol ratio= 1.96

    I’m 36, male, and have been doing keto for 1 month. Should I ask my doctor for another blood test but fasted this time? Can anything skew the triglycerides scores? Read coffee could affect Triglyceride readings? Thank you for great presentation.

  • I got into cycling because I like riding. I’ve been fortunate to be one of those “high metabolism” guys, so fitness has never been a big problem…..ok….well…let’s say I was skinny, but muscle strength? Yeah, my first day on my bike taught me how out of shape I was. But I had fun riding, even if the climbs were brutal. So I kept riding. Started out doing a few miles, then 5, then 7, then 10, then 12. Then I started incorporating gravel into my route. More challenging climbs, but more exhilarating descents. After 8 months, I started mountain biking on single track. It was a whole new world to explore, new challenges to face, and a whole new definition to “fun.” That was all in 2016.

    By 2018, I had met other local riders and we rode the trails on group rides. They convinced me to try out XC racing, so I did. Positively got my arse kicked that first race, but I loved every minute of it. Did a full season that year and finished 3rd overall in Cat 3 30-39 in my region. I raced another full season in 2019, and was set to race another this year (but the pandemic got the races cancelled). This was to be my last season racing Cat 3.

    Next year, I’m planning to get a road bike to compliment my mountain bike. Grinding those pedals on the road is excellent training for XC:) I’m absolutely in love with the sport. Now if I could just get my wife hooked…..:(

  • I bought a fixie bike 2 months ago. I use it like twice a week to go to the gym. Its not that far (like 3km) i weigh 85kg and i’m a beginner when it comes to cycling. I always had troubles when it comes to losing weight. And ı hate Jogging so i See this as a good alternativ to running. Problem is that i live in the middle of a busy City with traffic and stuff. is there any Tips you have for me folks?

  • There are two primary types of LDL cholesterol proteins. Type A: lb-LDL-p (large buoyant low-density lipoprotein particle) and Type B: sd-LDL-p (small dense low-density lipoprotein particle) Type A helps transport cholesterol around the body to various tissues as needed. Type B, the potentially damaging LDL protein particle, can get trapped in tissues, cause inflammation and arterial plaquing. Type A is supported by a diet that is high in saturated animal fats and Type B, the one you don’t want too much of, is associated with a high-carb, high fructose diet. If your doctor is not testing you for these subtypes, along with your triglyceride, HDL and total cholesterol levels, then you are not getting the entire picture.

    PS. Just a crazy thought, but… Wouldn’t it make more sense (in terms of accuracy) if our lipids vs. glucose lab work was drawn on two discreetly, separate days? Meaning, shouldn’t our lipids panel be drawn in a NON-FASTED state on one day, and then our blood work for A1c and resting glucose, etc. be drawn in a FASTED state on another day?

  • When considering eating healthy, you must never fall victim to modern fad diet plans. Extreme diets undoubtedly are a danger for your health, especially ones that seriously restrict your every day nutritional intake. While they may generate rapid loss of weight, these kinds of diet plans will never be a long-term solution for your weight problem. You should search Custokebon Secrets on google as it isn’t just another fad diet where you starve yourself.

  • I should jot down all names of patients who are tattooed because like all of them are. It is the same in two other shows I watch It’s Me or the Dog, and My Cat from Hell. I do not have any tattoos on me and don’t intend to get any. Dr. Now has the perfect disposition for his specialty. He is firm and sometimes blunt when it is called for but also patiently kind and genuinely happy with those who are successful.

  • The problem I have is that I am on a Ketogenic Lifestyle eating plan, so no carbs for me, so what to snack on when on a long bike ride, as I generally cycle on cycle tracks from my home to the seaside in Seaburn, which can take me around 90 Minutes each way, with a quick stop when I get to Seaburn before returning home, so lots of water but what else… Pork Scratchings? Brazil Nuts?? Almonds??? Also I already have lost 4 Stone (25Kg) since March 2020… But still more to come off. Love the videos but is there videos on using Mountain Bikes instead of road bikes, which is what I have.

  • so basically LDL isn’t essentially bad until it’s paired with other things, such as elevated blood glucose. High LDL is fine without external factors (glucose, etc.), and low LDL is also fine…then, if anything lower is better, yes? The subtle problem with LDL (especially when it’s high) is as soon as you slip up on a diet and expose yourself to higher blood glucose (?), it gets damaged and the bad LDL forms. so why not limit LDL to low levels totally in order to avoid diet slip ups then?

Keep up the good work….I am a 68 year old guy on Cape Cod who started riding seriously( was always a casual rider) about 4 years ago. I ride 150 miles per week all year long and I am in the best shape of my life and found many new friends on the trails. Btw…. I ride Catrikes as I find them to be much more comfortable, especially on the long rides. Your videos are great.

  • Well done! I really love the best parts about cycling; I love the freedom, the views you can chance upon, the downhills (haha), but I HATE, and I mean HAAAAAAAATE it when it gets tough on the legs and lungs. I MUCH prefer running because for some reason I can run through pain, but I can’t seem to handle it when on a bike. I’m not sure why, but I feel like you need a LOT more leg power to cycle; the running mechanics come naturally to me and it’s easy for me to push myself, but I have relatively weak stick legs which really don’t help me on a bike, lol.

    Unfortunately, I keep picking up injuries running so I think I’m gonna have to switch completely to cycling; I just need to work on my leg power, and get used to the movements that just don’t come naturally to me.

  • I just sent this link to my cardiologist. I will be seeing him next week. It should be interesting since he already knows that my father worked for Pfizer when Lipitor was developed. My doctor knows I know the inside scoop and will not try to push statins on me. He is still amazed by my ability to water fast for 30 days with no problems. I told him fasting and OMAD were key to my 105 weight loss. I only go to see him for a CAC test.

    Cycling always helped me to maintain my wight in my youth. That was my ticket for “eat whatever you want”.
    Now, 10 years later, I have to lose 35 kg (at least) more like 40kg.

  • 3 years ago I lost 4.5 stone in 10months by cutting out all the crap I used to eat, crisps, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, bread, pizzas, ate smaller dinners, cut out drinking and got a road bike, unfortunately I’ve put just over 3 stone back on in the last 12 months and it’s all gone on my stomach as I lost all motivation to get out on the bike or the turbo and started eating the wrong foods again. I used to go for a 20 mile ride every day or spend an hour or so on the turbo if the weather was naff after work but now after 10 or so hours at work all I want to do is sit down. Anyone got any tips on how to get motivated to get out on the bike again or even the turbo, i did go up the gym a few times but can’t stand it. I would rather be out in the fresh air but i just can’t seem to get motivated to, even though I look pregnant and growing pair of tits, and not the good kind.

  • I feel much better now. After I did low carb diet (Keto diet wanna be) and intermittent fasting for 6 months and I did my last blood blood test and learned that my LDL was 20 points higher than the blood test prior to that test. My triglycerides is still low. After watching this video, I am more confident in keep going on my keto (or low carb journey)

  • I actually gained a bit of weight when I first started cycling my appetite was nuts after doing a 40 km ride and I think my legs were getting bigger. That has curbed off though, about 10 weeks in, as my appetite has leveled off, and now I seem to be dropping a bit of weight. My legs are noticeably stronger and waist is definitely smaller.

The famous example is Jim Fixx a runner who at age 54 had 3 occluded arteries his TC was 254, HDL: 73. TG/HDL is confounded. You can have an ideal value and still have extensive disease. Refer to the Cleveland clinic studies and Honalulu Heart study

  • Dr Paul Mason! Could I ask you what you make of my cholesterol? I recently had the Lipid Subfractions test done (paid out of my own pocket) when I heard you and some others talking about it. My total cholesterol has been higher for the past few years but I have also been pregnant and breastfeeding for the last 5 years (I’ve had 3 babies and c-sections in that time also). I ended up with gestational diabetes with my 3rd. I wasn’t tested during my second pregnancy but suspect I may have been prediabetic as in this postpartum period (now 6 months postpartum) I haven’t really been able to reintroduce many carbs (sticking with low carb) because it seems to spike my blood sugar more than what looks good. I did a follow up GTT and had okay results for the fasting and 2h but spiked to 12.1mmol at the one hour. I had my first HbA1c a few weeks ago but because I have been eating low carb, I suspect it too would be higher if I had resumed my usual diet. The result was 5.3%.
    Anyway, back to my cholesterol: Total 8.43 mmol /L; Triglycerides 0.7 mmol/L; HDL 2.80 mmol. The Trigs/ HDL were looking pretty good despite the total, but then the subfractions: Total LDL 5.24 mmol/L LDL 1 2.06 mmol; LDL 2 1.35 mmol and LDL 3 0.31mmol and LDL 4 0.05 mmol. Both LDL 3 and 4 are over the recommended levels of 0.15 and 0.01 respectively. What should I do in this case? Stick with low carb eating for the rest of my life so I don’t allow this sdLDL to increase or my blood sugar to become T2 diabetic? Will that just keep me in a safe zone with a bit of sdLDL? I also had a C-Reactive Protein test which came back a bit elevated 5.4 mg/L (not sure though if it’s related to the sdLDL or whether I was at the tail end of a virus and it picked that up.) Should I just test everything again in another year or sooner? I’ve been offered statins from before I took the lipid subfractions test but my current GP wasn’t sure what to make of the lipid subfraction results and I wasn’t keen on quitting breastfeeding to take a statin… Can low carb help rid the body of sdLDL or does it just help prevent more LDL from being oxidised?

  • I’m 19 and keto helped me with my eating disorder, my weight is now stable!! I don’t crave carbs, no resistence for carbs (I’m not eyeing carbs and wishing I’d want to eat it, it just doesnt look like real food, and cakes kinda of look more like a piece of art, I find it weird how people eat this stuff now) and my energy levels are awesome the only thing I do is take electrolyte salts, I have things like berries, nuts, dairy, variety of vegetables, meat and sometimes hummus, mayo or low sugar baked beans. Started 5 months ago, Best decision of my life! They thought I’d get ketoacidosis but that happens with high insulin, I tried to explain to a practitioner but she was like ‘nah your liver is going to get damaged you’ll have dangerous amount of ketones’ I wanted to believe her but it just didnt add up… keto is not ketoacidosis at all! Has my liver packed in yet, have I developed hypoglycemia?? I don’t think so, there’s no signs �� I love researching about this stuff and watching debunking videos. Thanks for making this ����

  • I have lost 20 kilos (45 pounds) in 4 months. As soon as the pandemic started I turned to biking to manage my stress. I started riding 32 kilometers every day (6am) on my mountain bike but on a paved road, I was still stressed so I included an afternoon ride (6pm) also for 32k. I ride a total of 64k six days a week and after losing 20 kilos (45 pounds) I’m 5 kilos (11 pounds) away from my target optimal weight. With a sugar-less diet, patience and a twinkle of OCD:) I have managed to keep the riding regimen and loving it.

  • I’m 52 and was keto but now transitioned to full carnivore 3 weeks ago and today blood pressure 109/59 heart rate 48bpm. Blood glucose 86 mg/dL. Total cholesterol 327. HDL 57. LDL 259… so that leaves 11 “unaccounted” for. Triglycerides are 59. So my TGL/HDL is 1.04 which by the graph puts it firmly in Pattern A?? Good god….my doctor would have a tartan hairy fit if she knew my “average” daily diet was 4 large butter fried organic eggs, 6 rashers of fatty streaky bacon, a pound of (12%) beef mince/ground beef made into burgers, half pound of grilled Haloumi cheese and a butter fried half pound Rib-eye….loads of salt and ACV too…. never felt better or stronger…!!!

  • It helps because it’s fun and versatile a nice bike can keep u entertained and fit u can change gears and make it harder to pedal or if u wanna just cruise peacefully u can coast and switch to a lower gear and it’s just very nice if u wanna lose weight I promise getting a nice bike and drinking plenty of water and slowly improving ur diet u will see results in how u feel and ur stomach I rode my bike everyday about maybe 2-4 miles a day for 2 months and lost 35 lbs along with healthier eating habits ofcourse I promise u will love it

  • early in the morning, it’s be better to start our day with Excercise which helps in handling our emotions like laziness, fear etc. So that the entire day we will be feeling the same.

  • Drinking a big glass of water before eating a meal is not good advice especially for an athlete where digesting the nutrient of your meal is crucial to staying healthy and fit. You do not want to dliute your stomach acids by drinking loads and loads of plain water before eating a meal.
