  • All the so called ‘blue zones’ in the world the regions with highest human longevity rate are overwhelmingly plant-based. Up until 1950 Okinawans ate a 98% plant-based diet, since then a lot of western influence from the West and a rise in the consumption of animal products has brought heart disease, diabetes and cancer to those people.

  • If today I stop eating a keto-ish diet and only eat fresh fruits and veggies no matter how much or little, my gums will bleed by late afternoon no gum bleeding issues on me eating a keto-ish way. Can someone explain why this is?   • Part of the problem with RCTs and nutrition, in my opinion, is that nutrition is very much tied to a person’s health. What right do we have to possibly make participants sick or obese (a pattern that can be very hard to break out of) for research purposes? Furthermore, it’s very hard, nutritionally, to compare apples ot apples, figuratively speaking. Is a bag of potato chips equal to a baked potato or mashed potatoes? Can you really lump fruit in with candy or meat? Just from my own experience, I can say I feel a lot better eating fresh fruit so often (now that I live less than 2 miles from multiple grocery stores… instead of being 65 miles away…). Of course, the plural of anecdote isn’t data and I’m sure results vary. Still, it’s hard to see fresh fruit as ‘unhealthy’. Furthermore, I’m sure that not all meat is created equal. There’s a big difference between a boiled chicken salad and fried chicken with fries, for example. That said, I’m sure I’m biased, as likely pretty much everyone is. Full disclosure, I’m vegetarian (in part because I really don’t like writhing in pain for hours on end after eating meat… it’s just not fun for me). Of course I’m going to personally think that a gluten-based diet with lots of fresh fruit and veggies and grains (and the occassional egg or dairy product) is awesome because that’s what I eat, and I do well on it. Clearly, imposing my diet on someone with Celiac’s disease would be a very, very bad idea. I think this is why nutrition science is so difficult. Everyone’s body is different, and one size may never fit all.

  • Fish eaters have been proven to live the longest I.e. Pescatarians which is what I subscribe to. A diet consisting of whole plant foods, fruit, nuts, grains and fish is optimal for humans. Stay away from land animals.

  • I considered going vegan/vegetarian. I did notice a lot of fake meat, like fake Philly cheesesteaks (no!). By being flexitarian if I want a cheesesteak, I’ll get one (not too often tho, too heavy). I think that makes me appreciate the strict vegan/ vegetarian dishes more.

  • Funny how you all take advice from “doctors” who not one of which look healthy. humans are not herbivores, we are not even omnivores. We are carnivores by nature. The carnivore diet/keto has completely changed my life for the better, while to be vegan we must eat manmade heavily processed foods and oils which not even found in nature as well as supplements which if you have to supplement then by definition your diet is lacking nutrients.   • In Islam, you technically cannot be vegan as unnecessary self-denial is considered wrong. The early Arab Muslims would primarily eat meat so eating meat has become an important part of our lives. Fasting is highly promoted for spiritual (including sexual restraint) and health benefits and actually we fast quite often other than the 30 days of fasting in the month of Ramadan. Sadly, mixing of other religious ideologies with science has certainly led to disastrous consequences.   • Unbelievable! This is not the first time that I’ve heard people say that you are a ‘Vegetarian’ if you eat vegetables and don’t eat read meat. Fish (and other foods like clams, muscles, oysters, lobsters, et al.) are animals, so are chickens, so are pigs even though their meat is not red. Observational studies, especially without sufficient adherence to Scientific Method, having truly diverse and statistically significant number of subjects doesn’t seem that much to ask for. I’m not talking just an equal number of men and women, but different socioeconomic groups, nations of origin, cultural traditions, ethnic origin, level of education, various ages, over TIME.

    Even if we just fix how new studies are reported today, something like this piece, but even more so. For example, there was a time when every T.V. Network had Science editor or regular scientific and medical contributors. Even our local Chanel’s had a Science, Tech and Medical Editor. Without that we raw information reported WITHOUT context.

    For example, either late last year or early this year a study was released that indicated that eating a specific food, and that food eludes me at the moment, I’d have to go back check my notes. Whenever I here of a new study, in just about any branch of science or medicine I read the original study to check methodology, numbers, of start with their Thesis and Abstract, then the conclusion, read the procedure, data. Then read the and scholarly work, in support or denouncing the study and look for standing and other similar research. It sounds exhaustive, but it’s just the way my mind works.

    At any rate, this study read and reported that for the average American, and they should have written it as non-Asian American. If you eat x your likelihood, probability, of developing Stomach Cancer increased 30%. So that is exactly what they reported. But no context. In the U.S. for non-Asian Americans, in men the probability of males developing Stomach Cancer is 1 in 95 and for women 1 in 154, and is THAT PROBABILITY that increased by 30%, NOT an American’s OVERALL RISK. But that’s how they left it hanging out there like that.

  • A note about the way Esselstyns eats his oatmeal, he eats it raw, uncooked, just with the oat milk and fruit, when I heard this I thought gross, but I tried it and it’s one of my favorite things to eat now that I’ve gone vegan, I put bananas and blueberries and frozen raspberries they make the milk turn pink and appetizing, doesn’t even need date sugar like I first started putting.

  • 1 to 2 per 100,000 still means a lot of people when extrapolating to an entire population. Also, this particular study can’t establish causal link because it’s an observational study however plant based diets are the only diet that has been proven in clinical trials to reverse heart disease and stroke in the dean ornish studies. No other diet has done this in a clinical setting so taking observational studies and clinical studies together you can determine that healthy plant based diets reduce risk of cardiovascular events. The dean ornish studies in particular were a no oil whole foods plant based study and took participants that were already on death’s door from multiple heart attacks in the past. Almost every participant that adhered to the diet didn’t have another heart attack and 60% of those who didn’t adhere to the diet did.

    You need to take all the evidence as a whole, you can dismiss any one single study but when you look at all of them as a whole you can’t deny that plant based diets save lives.

  • Some foods are objectively some of the healthiest foods on the planet. Grassfed liver for example, has more nutrients gram for gram for gram than almost any other food.

  • I just have come off a displaced tibial plateau fracture and been immobile for 2 months. As a consequence, I have piled on some weight not being able to exercise. I have long been looking for a diet that makes sense to me, that I can stick with. I really think this fits the bill! My criticism of eating vegan is reflected here as well. Tons of processed foods! Expensive too. It just is not logical. For the last decade or so, I have not eaten much red meat at all. Once a month or so, I might indulge. Most of my animal protein sources have been organic chicken, eggs, and fish. I seek to reduce the eggs especially, as I am not sure how much it has contributed to my elevated cholesterol. There is conflicting information on that too.

  • I’ve been vegan for a year. But I’ve also been doing a lot of research and I think the flexitarian diet is the healthiest. A diet most based on fresh fruits and veggies. Grains with small amounts of meat once a day at the most. Like a couple times a wee is better. That’s how the Okinawa people ate and they were the longest lived people on earth. I do not believe Dairy is healthy. Even in small quantities. Dairy is scary. Honestly it is. It’s been been proven several times over to be carcinogenic. I’ve been considering adding a piece of fish to my diet once a week. I’m starting to have some issues that I can’t seem to figure out what it is. I think eating a 3oz salmon fillet once a week may be healthy.

  • You mentioned that processed vegan cheese is typically unhealthier than dairy cheese. I agree with this to an extent. With vegan cheese, you’re missing out on a good amount of calcium. However, vegans don’t eat plant-based foods because it’s a healthier eating lifestyle. Vegans eat plant-based foods because they’re cruelty-free, and vegans want to leave less of a carbon footprint. If you’re eating a whole food plant-based diet solely for health reasons, you’d say you’re plant-basednot vegan.

    Now that I got that out of the way, I’d like to strive to become flexitarian, although my family is comprised of the biggest omnivores. I don’t blame them, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t craving pizza or something super cheesy now and then, but flexitarian seems more doable than veganism, vegetarianism, or pescatarianism in that it allows some leg room.

  • 0:14 Prediction: Even if the new study has good research (high sample size, RCT, weren’t looking at a gazillion things or properly accounted for it if they were, etc.), I bet the effect size is small enough that you do not make that recommendation. And I also would be surprised if the research hit all the points I mentioned.

  • I’m a flexitarian too:) just a flexible vegetarian in some way… I’m brought up by vegetarians… I avoid meat but I’m not a strict vegetarian… so I consider myself flexitarian too:)

  • I’ve partially transitioned to flexitarian unknowingly throughout a year. I generally stopped liking meat less and thinking “ew” when being offered them. I still do enjoy a few meats but avoid most just because they are “gross” or my stomach says no thank you. Glad I finally found out about this type of diet and how I can work around and enhance it:)

  • Veganism is not a diet, a “diet” implies it’s life-sustaining, healthy, or helps you lose weight, veganism is a regime, it’s a program that includes an unhealthy diet, compassion, animals and the environment, no doctor or any expert in the world will convince me that veganism is a diet, it’s bloody well not!

  • My breakfast diet is similar to most of these. Oats, berries and fresh fruit. The key thing I’m after are the microflora inherently riding with this uncooked food. It’s funny but not one person in this video mentioned this. I believe this is the key ingredient.

  • This was a great talk by Belinda Fettke, and it articulates something that people, who have dealt with low fat/plant based advocates, have long suspected. Their nearly fanatical vitriol with regards to the consumption of animal flesh and animal products, is never the product of well thought out science, as much as it is driven by a sympathy towards animal welfare or environmental concerns. All their talk of the health benefits of plant based diet is a smoke screen to mask their real agenda of environmentalism and animal welfare ideas which they fear most people will not find very compelling.

  • Yeah its about what is better for us. You know pain, suffering, fear, sadness and on the other side joy, wanting to live is real even in animal. If we are so above them, our goal should be to make world a better place, go above taste, knowing we ourselfs can be greatest source of everlasting joy and satisfaction, not just temporary satisfaction of good taste.   • Thank you for this informative video. Grains make me so sick, I have celiac disease and simply can’t eat wheat, barley, rye, spelt and oats. I really enjoy creating LCHF meals and I’ve even learned to make a chocolate grain-free cake.

  • I can’t trust many studies or even science anymore when it comes to nutrition cause there’s so many studies that contradict one another and so many made to get you to buy stuff. Plants having antinutrients and oxalates for example which can damage your health in excess (which is why many vegans drink lemon water and maybe get kidney stones) and then saying red meat is bad but never looking at the quality of the meat. I think its important to eat for your individual health concern and see nutritionist to design a diet for you or use your own intuition. The amount of ex-vegan videos out there that did it right and supplemented and still failed are a lot, and then you have the opposite crazy end of only carnivore eaters who are anti plants….there’s like a war over nutrition

  • Carbs don’t hurt about 30% of the population like they do the rest of us. Foods affect each of us a little differently. Mixtures of foods affect individuals differently. Some can have 200 grams of carbs a day with minimal effect. Others get sick on 50 grams a day.

  • Greger is dead wrong. Look up the bioavailable nutrient profile of an ounce of grass fed beef, then do the same for an ounce of chick peas……..no contest, fat soluble vitamins in beef dominate. Fact: all plants have anti nutrients (toxins), you have to deal with,which is why most food allergies are plant based. VEGE heads are mal -nourished, thus their brains are not thinking clearly.

  • I recently listened to a programme on the UK state funded Radio 4 programme ‘You And Yours’ in which “an expert” recommended a plant based diet for good health.

  • I’ve become flexitarian due to eating high fiber I was focusing on that years ago due to my stomach and ending up eating pretty flexitarian. More seafood than meat as well. Then I found out it was a thing and one of the healthiest diets according to physicians which was great! Nutritional science truly is confusing.

  • I’ve just started this. I plan on one day a week with meat. Cutting out evil refined sugar and chips. I want to see if this will lower HBP and Cholesterol. I was on OMAD, it’s great, my BP was lower but it’s not an easy thing. I’ll still do it intermittently though, as it gives the system a break.

  • What about all the glyphosate in oatmeal? The alarming levels of this dangerous pesticide in practically all oatmeal brands is criminal. Oatmeal may once have been the indispensable staff of life for countless generations of bog and glen dwellers, but not so since Monsanto and all the other fine purveyors of toxic waste got their greedy little digits on our food supply. Nowadays, I don’t have breakfast. I eat but once a week and have reverted to the selective cannibalism of my forebears, but non-GMO vegans are getting increasingly difficult to source.
