It’s so nice not to think about food. I come from a background of yo-yo dieting, major restriction and binge eating. Since I started this journey I haven’t actually had the extreme hunger, but every other time after restricting I do. I think it’s just the freedom part that makes me not feel like I need to binge

I have a question though: Whenever I’m a few days into intuitive eating, I feel just fat after the weight gain from binge eating and get the same thoughts again of ‘If I just fasted for a week or dieted really low for some time, I could look better and do intuitive eating even better because I would feel better in my body!’, because with IE there’s no guarantee to lose weight and it shouldn’t really be a goal, but if you want to lose, it often is of course. So what happens is that I binge just to ‘start a diet’ tomorrow, diet for some days, binge because it’s of course not sustainable, then go back to IE. I always fall for the same trap, but even if I know that dieting is not sustainable, I still have these reoccuring thoughts that make me want to give up IE just to justify binging now:(
I’m a WFPB vegan but I’d be lying to not acknowledge it takes a lot of time each and every day. Doing WFPB right, you can’t rely on restaurants for sustenance, not even vegan ones, which are usually pretty awful anyway. You need to make your own food from scratch. It’s hard to see how people who work full time can do it without being completely devoted to it. Plant-based eating is taking the U.S. by storm, but it’s coming in the form of lots and lots of plant-based yet decidedly unhealthy convenience foods like meat and dairy analogs, almost none of which are even remotely healthy things to eat. Gone vegan 7 years ago, and my autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritic, IBS and acid reflux all disappeared. It was completely unexpected for me. This doctor is absolutely right. Might not know what I am talking about, but… Why can’t a diseased kidney be removed, kept alive separately from the body and “worked on”? A decade ago they were growing kidneys in rats, weren’t they? Why can’t just the parts needed be grown be done and the diseased kidney operated on, replacing only the damaged parts? Or, maybe the diseased kidney can heal itself outside the body in an artificially created “perfect” or “ideal” environment? Another possible approach: put the diseased kidney into a very healthy young person (or animal) until it is repaired, then put it back. Wouldn’t these approaches work for other organs as well? When I decided to exit out E.D seat (anorexia then bulimia) I was sure I would become obese or at least pretty overweight or forever struggling with weight. My hunger was so big I never heard of extreme hunger and thought I had either no willpower or was greedy as fuck. Anyway, after 20 years of unhalthy diet and abusive relationship with my body. I threw myself in recovery process all by myself 10 months ago. Had few relapses, usually for a few following days but with time I learnt to not blame myself, and keep going. When I had binges I would try as much as possible to implememt mindfulness and observe myself in the process of binging, it cuts the pleasure by half haha. I realized binges would mostly appear when I undereat or when I let guilt take over my mind. I have been purge free from 2 months now and it’s heaven. I am still working out my hunger cues etc but definitely get a better grasp of it every day that goes by. My weight is perfectly within normal BMI index. I feel stronger, happier, more balanced, and dare i say proud. I realized now This E.D has served me a great deal tho. I was an oversentitive child in great need of coping mechanisms. Meditation helped a lot also. I am not my body. I have a body that enables me to experience life. Life is magical. I am done taking pleasure pretty exclusively in food. Great talk!!! The evidence that plant based diets are healthier is overwhelming. There was only 1 point I’m not sure about. I don’t think msg is unhealthy as it is naturally occurring in some plant foods. Although idk I know that’s controversial. The only other thing I’ll say is it would be helpful if you included some more studies to back up your points. Hopefully they start teaching this stuff in med school.

In October 2017, I was over 150kg and was set to have a gastric sleeve. They found a large (nearly 10cm) tumor in the upper part of my stomach, so the surgery was delayed (thankfully the tumor was benign). In the last nine months I’ve lost over 62 kg (from a high of 157.2kg down to 94.9 kg as of this morning), and my blood pressure (which was stubbornly high before) has gone back to normal. But even more importantly, I’ve stopped eating sugar, processed food, artificial sweeteners and all the other junk. I keep my diet focused on healthy, whole foods, mostly plants (like you say veggies, fruit, nuts, beans and seeds). I’ve learned to plan ahead (I always keep fruit and/or dry roasted nuts with me, for example), to try new things (I never thought I’d say this, but steamed broccoli and cauliflower can be pretty tasty, especially with served with some green peas and carrots), and to try and develop healthier habits (I have a green smoothie every morning, and I walk 10,000 steps per day, etc.)
I also recognize that I’m still in the ‘honeymoon’ period, that much of my weight loss is due to genetics more than anything else, and that turbulent waters may be ahead. But armed with your information (both the specifics and the underlying philosophies), I feel confident that I’m doing everything I can to stay on the right track. Your information is like the lighthouse, guiding me to success.

Tip, try reversing the percentage times of seeing the speaker versus the slide. This is such a common mistake in TED presentations and seems to be spreading. We do not need to see the speaker because we can hear them. However showing the slides that the speaker prepared as being important are flashed onto the screen giving the viewer no chance to absorb the information or interrogate them.

That study was garbage, if my maintance calories is 3000 which it is, if I eat 3500 I’ll gain weight if I eat 3000 I’ll stay the same… hows that possible if calories in calories out don’t matter

I actually thought I recovered from my anorexia, but through watching your videos and doing research i recently discovered that I was just in limbo, quasi-recovery, alternating with the hunger-and-fullness-diet. During the periods that I was really committed and doing really ‘well’ in the hunger-fullness-diet, I did experience moments of higher energy and lower hunger, so I can definitely say that is true. The problem is that I was only doing the physical work I was still in my head and emotions messed up, juding myself and my foods, even though I allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted and such. I have now chosen to focus more on my mental and emotional health, as I’ve seen that doing the purely physical part of things isn’t hard at all. It’s the mind and heart that matters (most) in recovery.
Recovery for me involved putting on more than 135 pounds within the first year. It was your book (and a couple of others in particular) that really helped me when it felt so scary to watch the scale go up so quickly. My weight leveled off and stayed where it was for a while, and eventually it started coming off but I had to eat a LOT of food and a LOT of calories and carbs in order for the weight to come off. As long as I kept my calories and carbs too low, my body would not let go of the weight. It took me 3800 calories a day for the weight to stop piling on and start to reverse. This was pretty much impossible for me to maintain, coming from a background of starvation both caloric and carb restriction. But your book helped me so much, and my body balanced out. I stopped restricting nearly 3 months ago after being orthorexic for as long as I can remember (even as a child) and being particularly restrictive for the last nearly 2 years. The weight gain really is a struggle some days I think less about it than other days but I keep telling myself that I’m doing the right thing, that my body will tell me what it needs and that this phase is exactly that a phase. Question, So how does intuitive eating still apply if lets say i’m full after dinner, and then I want dessert? My body probably doesn’t need more food (because I fed it properly) but yet dessert looks good so I eat it and become overly full. In that case, it would feel restrictive not to have dessert if I want it, but then again i’m not following my hunger cues because i’m full. Where is the line drawn between over eating and intuitive eating?

In any case, anyone watching this should also consider the possibility that a whole-food animal-based lifestyle might be the better option. Surprisingly, that could be better in terms of health, animal wellfare and the environment. Why? Simply because the global production of (whole) plant-foods is very destructive. Pastured cows are carbon neutral, even taking methane into account. Fields of corn, soy and wheat are not, they even require fertilizer from fossil fuels. Not to speak of pesticides. And as far as health is concerned: We actually need more protein and less fiber. The reason why fiber is considered beneficial is due to a) religiously motivated propaganda by the 7th Adventist Church and b) because it usually replaces junk food in the diet. If you replace the junk (donuts etc.) by sustainably raised animal foods, THAT is the best solution.

I first heard the phrase, “don’t lose weight to get healthy, get healthy to lose weight” from Dr. Eric Berg. I was having serious health issues and happened across one of his videos. I’m pretty sure I would not be here today had I not happened across that information and acted on it. I started keto and segued into IF and experienced a stunning improvement in my health in around six weeks time. I am so very thankful for all the doctors and others who are supporting the keto lifestyle and educating us about nutrition and how the body functions. I too intermediate fast 20-24 hours. Most days 1 meal or/and very rare 2 meals. I went from 138 to 125lbs 5.5. I’m so much stronger, have more clarity, and get so much accomplished not having to think about eating every 2 hours.

It’s so nice not to think about food. I come from a background of yo-yo dieting, major restriction and binge eating. Since I started this journey I haven’t actually had the extreme hunger, but every other time after restricting I do. I think it’s just the freedom part that makes me not feel like I need to binge

I have a question though: Whenever I’m a few days into intuitive eating, I feel just fat after the weight gain from binge eating and get the same thoughts again of ‘If I just fasted for a week or dieted really low for some time, I could look better and do intuitive eating even better because I would feel better in my body!’, because with IE there’s no guarantee to lose weight and it shouldn’t really be a goal, but if you want to lose, it often is of course. So what happens is that I binge just to ‘start a diet’ tomorrow, diet for some days, binge because it’s of course not sustainable, then go back to IE. I always fall for the same trap, but even if I know that dieting is not sustainable, I still have these reoccuring thoughts that make me want to give up IE just to justify binging now:(
I’m a WFPB vegan but I’d be lying to not acknowledge it takes a lot of time each and every day. Doing WFPB right, you can’t rely on restaurants for sustenance, not even vegan ones, which are usually pretty awful anyway. You need to make your own food from scratch. It’s hard to see how people who work full time can do it without being completely devoted to it. Plant-based eating is taking the U.S. by storm, but it’s coming in the form of lots and lots of plant-based yet decidedly unhealthy convenience foods like meat and dairy analogs, almost none of which are even remotely healthy things to eat. Why can’t a diseased kidney be removed, kept alive separately from the body and “worked on”? A decade ago they were growing kidneys in rats, weren’t they? Why can’t just the parts needed be grown be done and the diseased kidney operated on, replacing only the damaged parts? Or, maybe the diseased kidney can heal itself outside the body in an artificially created “perfect” or “ideal” environment?
Another possible approach: put the diseased kidney into a very healthy young person (or animal) until it is repaired, then put it back.
Wouldn’t these approaches work for other organs as well? Wouldn’t work for every situation, I’m sure.

I am getting through this and this is so true. When I decided to exit out E.D seat (anorexia then bulimia) I was sure I would become obese or at least pretty overweight or forever struggling with weight. My hunger was so big I never heard of extreme hunger and thought I had either no willpower or was greedy as fuck. Anyway, after 20 years of unhalthy diet and abusive relationship with my body. I threw myself in recovery process all by myself 10 months ago. Had few relapses, usually for a few following days but with time I learnt to not blame myself, and keep going. When I had binges I would try as much as possible to implememt mindfulness and observe myself in the process of binging, it cuts the pleasure by half haha. I realized binges would mostly appear when I undereat or when I let guilt take over my mind. I have been purge free from 2 months now and it’s heaven. I am still working out my hunger cues etc but definitely get a better grasp of it every day that goes by. My weight is perfectly within normal BMI index. I feel stronger, happier, more balanced, and dare i say proud. I realized now This E.D has served me a great deal tho. I was an oversentitive child in great need of coping mechanisms. Meditation helped a lot also. I am not my body. I have a body that enables me to experience life. Life is magical. I am done taking pleasure pretty exclusively in food. There is so much more excitment to get out of life. Thank you for the fantastic video <3
Great talk!!! The evidence that plant based diets are healthier is overwhelming. There was only 1 point I’m not sure about. I don’t think msg is unhealthy as it is naturally occurring in some plant foods. Although idk I know that’s controversial. The only other thing I’ll say is it would be helpful if you included some more studies to back up your points. Hopefully they start teaching this stuff in med school.

I’m wondering: Google employees are kind of smart. Are they falling for this bullshit? Dr. Weiner I’m so happy to have found you on the internet. I’m an adult male, 44 years old, 177cm. I’m Canadian (from Toronto) but I live in New Taipei City, Taiwan. In October 2017, I was over 150kg and was set to have a gastric sleeve. They found a large (nearly 10cm) tumor in the upper part of my stomach, so the surgery was delayed (thankfully the tumor was benign). This delay turned out to be a blessing in disguise, however, as it was around this time I found your videos and began learning and prepping myself for life post-surgery.
When I was finally sleeved in May of last year, I was given very minimal information from the hospital regarding how to proceed post-op, and most of that was just for the first few weeks on how to progress to solid food. Further complicating the issue is that I don’t speak Chinese very well and what scant support there is out here is (understandably) geared towards Chinese speakers.
But I was prepared, thanks to you. I had read your book, watched your YouTube videos and now I’m subscribed to your website. In the last nine months I’ve lost over 62 kg (from a high of 157.2kg down to 94.9 kg as of this morning), and my blood pressure (which was stubbornly high before) has gone back to normal. My doctor very happy with my progress, as am I.
But even more importantly, I’ve stopped eating sugar, processed food, artificial sweeteners and all the other junk. I keep my diet focused on healthy, whole foods, mostly plants (like you say veggies, fruit, nuts, beans and seeds). I’ve learned to plan ahead (I always keep fruit and/or dry roasted nuts with me, for example), to try new things (I never thought I’d say this, but steamed broccoli and cauliflower can be pretty tasty, especially with served with some green peas and carrots), and to try and develop healthier habits (I have a green smoothie every morning, and I walk 10,000 steps per day, etc.)
I also recognize that I’m still in the ‘honeymoon’ period, that much of my weight loss is due to genetics more than anything else, and that turbulent waters may be ahead. But armed with your information (both the specifics and the underlying philosophies), I feel confident that I’m doing everything I can to stay on the right track. Your information is like the lighthouse, guiding me to success.
My quality of life has improved so much, in a relatively short time. And I feel that I owe you a debt of thanks, for helping me get this far. Please keep up the great work! And I’ll keep doing my best to stay informed and stay healthy!
Tip, try reversing the percentage times of seeing the speaker versus the slide. This is such a common mistake in TED presentations and seems to be spreading. We do not need to see the speaker because we can hear them. However showing the slides that the speaker prepared as being important are flashed onto the screen giving the viewer no chance to absorb the information or interrogate them.

I actually thought I recovered from my anorexia, but through watching your videos and doing research i recently discovered that I was just in limbo, quasi-recovery, alternating with the hunger-and-fullness-diet. During the periods that I was really committed and doing really ‘well’ in the hunger-fullness-diet, I did experience moments of higher energy and lower hunger, so I can definitely say that is true. The problem is that I was only doing the physical work I was still in my head and emotions messed up, juding myself and my foods, even though I allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted and such. I have now chosen to focus more on my mental and emotional health, as I’ve seen that doing the purely physical part of things isn’t hard at all. It’s the mind and heart that matters (most) in recovery.
Recovery for me involved putting on more than 135 pounds within the first year. It was your book (and a couple of others in particular) that really helped me when it felt so scary to watch the scale go up so quickly. My weight leveled off and stayed where it was for a while, and eventually it started coming off but I had to eat a LOT of food and a LOT of calories and carbs in order for the weight to come off. As long as I kept my calories and carbs too low, my body would not let go of the weight. It took me 3800 calories a day for the weight to stop piling on and start to reverse. This was pretty much impossible for me to maintain, coming from a background of starvation both caloric and carb restriction. But your book helped me so much, and my body balanced out. I would have restricted again if it weren’t for your research, experience and reassurance that I was on the right track. Thank you so much for that.

So how does intuitive eating still apply if lets say i’m full after dinner, and then I want dessert? My body probably doesn’t need more food (because I fed it properly) but yet dessert looks good so I eat it and become overly full. In that case, it would feel restrictive not to have dessert if I want it, but then again i’m not following my hunger cues because i’m full. Where is the line drawn between over eating and intuitive eating?

Personally, I am scared of not eating because two things: 1, I don’t want to lose any muscles. I rather want to have some fat than losing the muscles. In any case, anyone watching this should also consider the possibility that a whole-food animal-based lifestyle might be the better option. Surprisingly, that could be better in terms of health, animal wellfare and the environment. Why? Simply because the global production of (whole) plant-foods is very destructive. Pastured cows are carbon neutral, even taking methane into account. Fields of corn, soy and wheat are not, they even require fertilizer from fossil fuels. Not to speak of pesticides. And as far as health is concerned: We actually need more protein and less fiber. The reason why fiber is considered beneficial is due to a) religiously motivated propaganda by the 7th Adventist Church and b) because it usually replaces junk food in the diet. If you replace the junk (donuts etc.) by sustainably raised animal foods, THAT is the best solution.
