They just assumed it’s zero, so they put it at zero. So, you’re supposed to the RDA is the recommended daily allowances. They were supposed to have a thousand vitamin C and if you don’t have enough vitamin C you can get scurvy. Right. Right.. The problem is that carbohydrates and vitamin C compete for the same receptors. So, when you eat lots of carbohydrates you need to have lots of vitamin C so like you really only need about 10 milligrams of Vitamin C… Guess what. Like a pound of steak has milligrams of C at least that and I have like I probably have on a low day two pounds that’s a really low day. Like I have usually around three pounds of me today probably like two to three quarters to three pounds of meat a day.. And so, all these B vitamins iron minerals vitamins that I’m getting not only am I getting more vitamins and minerals and a lot of people were surprised. Yeah, a lot of the time meat is more has more vitamins than vegetables and not only does it have more but it’s more bioavailable because it’s with animal fat that you need to absorb because a lot of these are fat soluble so. You need to make sure you’re accomplishing 3 things for an effective muscle building diet plan: eating at a slight calorie deficit, eating adequate protein every day, and not eating like complete crap. These will account for let’s say 90% of the muscle growth you experience from your bulking meal plan. But what muscle building foods and nutrition tips can we incorporate to get that extra 10%? Well, there are a few additional things we can do when it comes to how to diet to gain muscle and what to eat to build muscle faster that can help speed up the muscle building process. And I’ll show you exactly how to do just that and provide you with a sample muscle building meal plan here.. The first thing you’ll want to do for an effective muscle building diet plan is take your daily protein intake and spread that out into ideally 4-5 meals throughout the day with each of them having a minimum of 20g of protein. It also makes sense to ingest an adequate amount of protein shortly before sleep since that’s the longest period you’ll go without food. That’s also why you might want to bias a little more of your daily protein towards this pre-sleep meal with at least 40g of slow digesting protein.. The next tip here is to incorporate “muscle building foods”. First, you want to opt for high quality protein sources that are not only high in leucine content, but also high in digestibility. In addition to this, you can opt for more unsaturated fats as opposed to saturated fats, which may bias more of the weight you put on to be muscle as opposed to fat. Olive oil and salmon specifically are two unsaturated fat sources I’d highly recommend incorporating in your muscle building diet.. Now the last tip when it comes to how to diet to gain muscle here is to periodize your diet. Although we want most of the weight you put on to be muscle, it will always come with a bit of fat gain with it. And as your body fat creeps up during a bulk, you actually become less efficient at putting on muscle. Meaning, that as you continue to gain weight and your body fat slowly creeps up, then it would be best to occasionally “re-sensitize” your body for more efficient growth by stripping off some of the excess fat you put on before you continue to focus on gaining more weight again.. So, to sum up all the muscle building nutrition tips covered: 1. Evenly distribute your protein throughout the day into 4-5 meals, each consisting of at least 20g of a high quality protein source. Biasing more of your protein (at least 40g) towards a pre-sleep meal is also a good idea to stimulate protein synthesis overnight.. 2. Optimize your food choices. Opt for higher quality protein sources and incorporate more unsaturated fat instead of saturated fat (olive and salmon oil may be the most beneficial). This may enable more of the weight you gain to be muscle as opposed to fat.. 3. Periodize your diet by transitioning through phases of a calorie surplus (e.g. 3 months) with phases of a calorie deficit (e.g. 1 month). This way you’ll be able to occasionally re-sensitize your body to put on muscle more efficiently.. All in all, guys, I hope that you were able to see that it’s the little details like this that really do make all the difference in the long run. To do this, many bodybuilders start with an off-season followed by an in-season way of eating — referred to as a bulking and cutting phase, respectively. During the bulking phase, which can last. Bulking is a technique used by bodybuilders to increase muscle size and strength. It involves consuming 10–20% more than your daily calorie needs in addition to weight training.
To make bulking. The Bulking Diet Bottom Line So, does this mean everyone should dive headfirst into a bulking diet? No.
But. But. But. I thought you just said that the more you eat, the easier it is to build muscle mass? I did.
Not all of us have the goal of packing on as much muscle mass as possible. Bulking comes with a price, and that price can be unwanted. Throughout the history of the sport, bodybuilders have separated their diets into two entirely distinct phases: bulk and cut.
The first occurs in the offseason and is characterized by consumption of an excess amount of calories in order to gain size—which comes in the forms of both lean mass and fat. Get your complete proteins from lean poultry, beef, pork, seafood, eggs, whey, and dairy. Don’t count every single gram of the incomplete protein you might get from your oats, rice, or nut butters. These incomplete proteins lack the nutrients you need to maximize the muscle-building response.
How to Progress Through a Bulking Phase. You will need to stick to lean sources of protein if you want to create lean muscle. Sure you can eat that whole sirloin steak, including the 10cm slab of fat attached to it, but don’t complain if you gain a lot of fat and no muscle.
Stick to lean protein sources. Turkey, chicken, fish, lean steak and mince, eggs and of course, protein shakes. For ages, bodybuilders and regular guys alike have taken a two-prong approach to getting big and ripped. “Bulking,” or eating as much as possible while training for muscle growth, followed by a calorie-restricted, fat-burning “cutting” phase has become the default method to carve out a bigger, leaner physique. To build muscle, you need to eat protein.
Lean meat and fish are the best sources of protein with all the essential amino acids your muscles require to repair and grow. If you’re vegan, eat a good variety of plant-based protein sources to ensure you’re getting the full spectrum of amino acids. 3.

Maintenance of extraordinary physical bulk and powerful muscle would require consumption of a high protein diet, such as steak, eggs, milk, and so on.
In addition, a high-protein diet usually does not have sufficient carbohydrate to fuel extended training sessions, and the desired muscle growth may actually be compromised because of inadequate energy to fuel protein synthesis in the muscle cell.

I really appreciate the research done by Jeff and how passionate he is about this topic of muscle-building. I am confused as to how this very rigid way around food consumption is any different from disorder eating behaviours. Where do you draw the line when you are weighing your pre-weighed oats. I am speaking from personal experience. Its not about what is possible. It is about what is effective. Building muscle is hard. Not to mention ampk will slow muscle growth. A slight calorie surplus (agree you cant measure exactly) with a slight insulin elevation will help. Since there also is no effective way of measuring muscle growth either, its probably better to be safe then sorry. But I agree one can build muscle on a deficit, the question is how effectively?

3:31 what you see in the picture is oats, they have no vitamins, they are simply grains, indigestible fiber full of lectins. The fruit is tons of sugar. At least 40 grams of sugar in that bowl alone.

Of course you don’t have to be in a caloric surplus to gain muscle. As long as you are eating proper amounts of protein and drop your caloric intake by 1000 cal or so, you can drop weight And build muscle. Problem is that not many people are capable of that degree of discipline.
I feel like I’ve been lied to for as long as I can remember, always thought being 300-500 calories above maintenance is the way to bulk but Greg here just shouted at me repeatedly in each video I watched and now I think otherwise I’ve now lost 51lbs in 5 months (too much too quickly?) I have to disagree, candy is not a good source of energy, a pre-workout meal with some carbs is good, but the post meal is actually more important, and that should be fats and protein. Sweets, too much fructose, glucose, sucrose is unhealthy.

What are they doing during your 10:30 breakfast? Working. Your afternoon preworkout meal, then your workout, AND your 4:30 post workout meal? Working.

Great info, thanks! A lot of what you said is in congruent with my own diet / workout regimen and it’s yielded great results.
For example, my breakfasts usually consist of: 3 large eggs + black beans + green onion, avocado, asparagus, cottage cheese, pickle, water + coffee. Lunch varies but is much more carb based, and my dinners are either chicken breast or salmon with rice / black beans and veggies. I also carry a jug of water with me everywhere I go (work, the mall, friends/family house, EVERYWHERE)… Also keep extras in my bedroom and my car just in case I run out or whatever.
I’m 195lbs, 6’3″, workout twice a day, triathlete and I lift 3-4 days a week. Daily caloric intake is around 3500, give or take a few hundred. And as for the comments section, I see a lot of jokes and judgement and not so much experience and results. No surprise there though…
Quick question if anyone can anwser me. Is there space for a whey protein shake after the workout. Im around 63 kg and the amount of protein shown in this diet should be more than enough for what i need, so is there any need in me taking a protein shake after the workout?

Thank you for ranting on the topic that I’ve been screaming about for years. I’m a skinny dude and made some mistakes that armed my progress but I had progress with 2500cal (50% carb, 20% protein) as 5’11 and starting 133lbs. At least as far as 9 point caliper would hint, I gained 1lb muscle and just below 1lb fat. If it wasn’t for measurements, I would have given up because I couldn’t “see” gains in the mirror until 6 months. Everyone just told me (bad advice) that I was just a slow gainer.
This guy is an absolute tool and disgrace to the fitness community. Why call people stupid for using calorie calculators? Of course it’s not going to be exact but if someone is trying, why would you degrade them for it? And it’s damn near impossible to build muscle while in a caloric deficit unless you’re a beginner. Yeah, I used to be fan of these fad internet diet meal plans. Until I learned that you stop eating crap, stop making yourself hungry, just eat enough healthy meals to meet your required calorie intake whether it’s losing weight or gaining weight. I actually eat 6 times a meal.

My biggest issue with the idea that you can’t gain muscle and lose fat is that the mechanisms to build muscle and the mechanisms to burn fat have exactly zero in common with each other.

Any nutrition 101 video that is 2 minutes long is just missing the point tbh. And I did that calculation 180/2 = 90 *.8 =72 grams of protein per day for a 5’9 180 pound male. Im sorry but your not gonna build lean muscle like that, maybe you’ll maintain muscle like that but if I go to the gym on that little protein id be sore for a week after.

Sweet Potatoes are not good because they contain Fructose which is the worst sugar you can put in your body. There’s no insulin response to Fructose but there is to the glucose from sweet potatoes. Fructose is not an immediate source of energy & is converted mainly to FAT in the liver.

Eating right before bed unfortunately is counter to the chrononutrition information we have stating that ‘eating’ is as potent a wake up signal to the body as sunlight. This means that eating right before sleeping results in poor quality sleep (reduced deep sleep), which as I understand it is the most important part of sleep for recovery. This is just abit way too complicated for someone to follow…. i have never heard anyone that follows this type of nutrition plan. Back in the day bodybuilders and athletes just ate good and healthy food mostly chicken, salads and meats. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane and many more athletes weren’t this much into food choices honestly.

i gain muscle only when i get fat to. Why? Because when u are watching how much calories you need to eat you are over you will never get big. Yes i try as he was saying does not work for me. When i start cutting than i have more muscles.. People who was never get fat they are never big.
In a nutshell, workout and live an active lifestyle. Eat eggs, hash browns and 2 fruit for breakfast. Eat peanut butter and jelly for post workout, then eat a high protein high fiber high calorie dinner to satiete sleep and hold you over until tomorrow. Then all over again.
Salmon is specifically noted as an optimum protein/good fat source and for it’s omega-3.

Man fuck bulking. I fell into that trap with he damn 5X5. Yeah I got strong and it was awesome, but I couldn’t fit in any pants, I was always chaffing so fucking running hurt, I always felt like shit. I got injured (not gym related) and was so depressed I couldn’t deadlift. Got into calisthenics, which moved to weighted calisthenics and bands, lost weight and I feel amazing, look so much better

Why lean protein? No human on the history of earth ate lean meat before the the 1960s. Low fat dairy? Seems like your mentors are stuck in the 90s with all that fat phobia. Saturated fat is the best thing you can eat. It’s what gave structure and made it possible for the homo sapien brain to evolve beyond a lesser ape. Ditch the whole grains and don’t fear fat.
2:23 those aren’t fats on the left, almond are plant oils and polyunsaturated and monounsaturated oils. Where is there fat in that? There’s no fat soluble vitamins nor cholesterol which is what hormones are made out of.

As someone who was super skinny I had to eat around 3900 calories a day with a moderate activity to gain weight and from the looks of my body alot of the weight was muscle but being in a deficit I was not able to build muscle except in my first year of lifting I would bet if u don’t have great genetics or in ur early stages of lifting most people can’t either

I am living proof. Now, I am no body builder of any sorts; just an “average Joe”. I did, however, go from 225 to 185, lost six inches off my waist, and gained muscle at the same time. I didn’t do it in a few month “cycle” LOL. It took me about 2 years with best results coming in the last 6 months after I had done extensive research in biology and physiology, gained muscle, and gotten in tune with my own body. Honestly, I lost the first two inches off my waist and the scales didn’t really move. So anyone saying you can’t lean and build muscle at the same time agreeably don’t know what they are talking about. Some people will call me crazy, but my new body set point is 180-185# to date. If my body weight tries to dip below 180 my hunger increases and then tapers off as my body weight approaches 185#. Now, this is without hitting the gym and just maintaining day to day during this time when the gyms have been closed. Of course, the harder I train my appetite goes up slightly but I don’t just keep gaining. I am not calling fact or fiction, this is just my personal experience. My new goal is to lose another inch off my waistline and build more muscle….it will happen. I don’t weigh myself for progress, I use the mirror and my clothes for that. I only weighed myself to investigate the ups and downs of my hunger mechanism and found the correlation.
Hey Jeremy, I’ve started lifting weights joined the gym, set my goal to have a fat to ripped body transformation. But I have weakness such as when I’m working on my biceps my left hand or should I stay shoulder starts to lift up when lifting the dumbbells working on biceps. I don’t know how to stop this and improve my left hand so when I’m doing dumbbell curls my left hand which is weak and it by it self starts to lift my arm up to get helps and do the curl. Consider this: How many pounds of pure muscle can you expect to build in a year? How much is that per month, week, day? Ounces. How much protein does it take to build an ounce or 4 ounces or a pound of new muscle? Does it require to more than double the normal requirement? Likely not. After necessary comes a sufficient amount of protein. Then comes the requirements for fats, carbohydrates and micronutrients to build muscle. Nor more protein.
Conduct your own experiment, but approach the situation from the baseline of 40/60 and add sparingly-conservatively. The remainder of your calorie budget is then sourced from healthy fats and nutrient-dense complex carbs. Eat whole-foods (raw or minimally cooked fresh foods), prioritize vegetables, low glycemic fruits, grains, and your appetite will be satiated, and you can adjust your calorie intake for gains or losses. I hope this helps open some minds, question conventional thinking, and a renewed focus on healthy living in the pursuit of strength, fitness, and physiques.

I counted 154 blinks from her in just this 2 minute video. Okay so an average human blink is 4/10ths of a second. I’ll just round it up to half a second to make it easier. So you divide 154 by half which is 77. 60 seconds is one minute. So 77-60=17. Check your work always. 60+17-77. Good! So she spent roughly 1:17 out of the two minutes with her eyes closed.
Yeah, I too am guilty of jumping through weight loss plan to others as well, I think that I must have tested every fat reduction method that was available, however eventually not one of them helped me to lose and maintain the weight off. I don’t now how im supposed to do stuff like this, i need to wake up for school at 6:00 am and i want to get 8 hours of sleep wich means going to bed at 10 pm i cant bring whole meals with 5 different types of foods to school and eat that in a 10-15 min lunch break. And i also need to travel back to home from school as well as in the morning to school wich takes about 30 mins but to travel back i may miss the buss every now and then wich results in taking even longer. Its not about what is possible. It is about what is effective. Building muscle is hard. Not to mention ampk will slow muscle growth. A slight calorie surplus (agree you cant measure exactly) with a slight insulin elevation will help. Since there also is no effective way of measuring muscle growth either, its probably better to be safe then sorry. But I agree one can build muscle on a deficit, the question is how effectively?

After googling i found out a cup of oats and a cup of milk have different volumes so for the breakfast shake it’s 90 grams of oats and not 128, and 350ml milk instead of 192?

Of course you don’t have to be in a caloric surplus to gain muscle. As long as you are eating proper amounts of protein and drop your caloric intake by 1000 cal or so, you can drop weight And build muscle.
Problem is that not many people are capable of that degree of discipline.
I feel like I’ve been lied to for as long as I can remember, always thought being 300-500 calories above maintenance is the way to bulk but Greg here just shouted at me repeatedly in each video I watched and now I think otherwise I’ve now lost 51lbs in 5 months (too much too quickly?) I have to disagree, candy is not a good source of energy, a pre-workout meal with some carbs is good, but the post meal is actually more important, and that should be fats and protein. Sweets, too much fructose, glucose, sucrose is unhealthy.
I find the key to good muscle growth is a quality pre workout, plenty of hydration: gatorade, water, electrolytes, and listening to the body.

For example, my breakfasts usually consist of: 3 large eggs + black beans + green onion, avocado, asparagus, cottage cheese, pickle, water + coffee. Lunch varies but is much more carb based, and my dinners are either chicken breast or salmon with rice / black beans and veggies. I also carry a jug of water with me everywhere I go (work, the mall, friends/family house, EVERYWHERE)… Also keep extras in my bedroom and my car just in case I run out or whatever.
I’m 195lbs, 6’3″, workout twice a day, triathlete and I lift 3-4 days a week. Daily caloric intake is around 3500, give or take a few hundred. And as for the comments section, I see a lot of jokes and judgement and not so much experience and results. No surprise there though…

I’m a skinny dude and made some mistakes that armed my progress but I had progress with 2500cal (50% carb, 20% protein) as 5’11 and starting 133lbs.
At least as far as 9 point caliper would hint, I gained 1lb muscle and just below 1lb fat. If it wasn’t for measurements, I would have given up because I couldn’t “see” gains in the mirror until 6 months. Everyone just told me (bad advice) that I was just a slow gainer.

Man fuck bulking. I fell into that trap with he damn 5X5. Yeah I got strong and it was awesome, but I couldn’t fit in any pants, I was always chaffing so fucking running hurt, I always felt like shit. I got injured (not gym related) and was so depressed I couldn’t deadlift. Got into calisthenics, which moved to weighted calisthenics and bands, lost weight and I feel amazing, look so much better

I am living proof. Now, I am no body builder of any sorts; just an “average Joe”. I did, however, go from 225 to 185, lost six inches off my waist, and gained muscle at the same time. I didn’t do it in a few month “cycle” LOL. It took me about 2 years with best results coming in the last 6 months after I had done extensive research in biology and physiology, gained muscle, and gotten in tune with my own body. Of course, the harder I train my appetite goes up slightly but I don’t just keep gaining. I am not calling fact or fiction, this is just my personal experience. My new goal is to lose another inch off my waistline and build more muscle….it will happen. I don’t weigh myself for progress, I use the mirror and my clothes for that. I only weighed myself to investigate the ups and downs of my hunger mechanism and found the correlation.
Hey Jeremy, I’ve started lifting weights joined the gym, set my goal to have a fat to ripped body transformation. But I have weakness such as when I’m working on my biceps my left hand or should I stay shoulder starts to lift up when lifting the dumbbells working on biceps. Yeah, I too am guilty of jumping through weight loss plan to others as well, I think that I must have tested every fat reduction method that was available, however eventually not one of them helped me to lose and maintain the weight off. I don’t now how im supposed to do stuff like this, i need to wake up for school at 6:00 am and i want to get 8 hours of sleep wich means going to bed at 10 pm i cant bring whole meals with 5 different types of foods to school and eat that in a 10-15 min lunch break. We don’t have a break every 2 hours. And i also need to travel back to home from school as well as in the morning to school wich takes about 30 mins but to travel back i may miss the buss every now and then wich results in taking even longer. I also have a sort of disease wich gives me blisters in my mouth and that makes certain foods (mostly salty and hard foods) quite painful and pretty much not edible.

Thanks brah. I workout and im lean. I add 1 cup of Half and half cream to cook cream of wheat. But while watching your vid I noticed my briefs are a kinda tight. Should not use 1 cup half & half daily, and use water instead? But it doesnt taste as good.
