  • I suffer with migraines, I get at least one a week, probably closer to every other day. The doctors have said that exercise helps with this but whenever I work out even if for only ten minutes, it gives me a really bad headache. I cant eat or exercise the way i use to, man i miss my body lol So ive been power walking, lean Quinine veg fruit etc, but goodness you cant hardly tell a difference! Also, I have to have breakfast every single day before I do anything else. If I skip it, I always end up feeling miserable dizzy, nautious and with no energy whatsoever.     Or any other comparable distances / times, just threw those in there.
    Of course there’s the afterburn effect from HIIT style training and all that but a some kind of: “5K/30min jog is equal to 10x 100m sprints (approx 3-4 mins of running and double those times in getting back/rest for a total of 12 minutes)” would put things into a nice neat package for people.

  • This is keto diet to the extreme. Most avg. people do well with 150 net carbs daily to lose body fat. That’s 2 lbs/ week. The info on insulin resistance is spot on. Carb cycling is the key to lose fat safely. Just to give folks an idea of carb range. A medium banana is around 80 carbs. 25 carb limit daily is a difficult target for a beginner.   • Am I allowed to still not get it?:) I mean, the burn of fat can only occur in the absence of insulin, but for the burn you need carbs which causes high level of insulin. Let me ask by example. Let’s say I eat 6 AM eggs + bread, 12 AM meat plus green veggies, 6 PM meat plus green veggies. When do I drop the two sweet carrots I have assigned for the day?:)

  • Yes… And what are you going to eat instead of carbs? Fat or protein. Fat just gonna get stored, and protein works like carbs except it needs to be converted into glycogen (glycogenesis, its included in the protein thermic effect).
    So basically yeah, you can burn more fat good for you… yet you also gonna store more fat. In addition, a fat rich diet makes you more sedentary (at leat most of us athletes), and thats gonna pull down your energy expenditure.
    Insulin is not a 0 or 1 system. Your body is constantly burning fat and glycogen and also generate them. Insulin is just a hormon that helps controling the amount. You can cut carbs, but no miracle going to happen.

  • I never understand these videos. How do they explain the fact that the worlds best runners, the Kenyans and the Talahamara eat 80-90% of their calories from carbs, they eat a very high carb, mostly plant based diet, and these people are distance runners, winning marathons. If fat is so great why do these people who eat high carb diets keep winning all the time? Then there the okinowans, who eat a very high carb diet full of sweet potatoes, fruit and rice and are thin, healthy and frequently live past 100. They never mention these people. Asians who eat 80-90% of their calories from rice and vegetables are some of the thinnest people on earth. And very healthy. I still have yet to see any solid evidence that goes against what Dr John McDougall preaches. STARCH!!! humans are Starchivores, meant to eat potatoes, rice, corn, sweet potatoes, pasta, bread. Prove him wrong. Nobody has been able to yet.

  • I prefer to workout on an empty stomach.  Especially if I will be doing intense cardio, HiiT, metabolic training or tabata.  I feel sluggish and nauseated if I try to eat first.  I do have to have my quart of water and coffee first though.  If I am doing weights, I can eat first, but still I am just in the habit of working out on an empty stomach and even on days I do not workout, I wait a couple of hours after rising to eat.  I am not programmed to eat first thing.  I also prefer not to eat late at night.I do have a question.  Why does it seem metabolic workouts have so many overhead presses in the mix…I feel like I am always doing an overhead press…I realize you can do squats, lunges, step ups etc with the overhead press, but I feel it is over-utilized. What can I do instead…hammer curls, front raises, lateral raises?  I guess I could do them without weights.  Am I the only one who feels this way?

  • I tried eating minimal carbs for a few days. I basically only ate meat and veggies. I was so fucking hungry all the time. I dont think your body is designed to like using its fat stores thats why, wish I could stick to it…

  • I always workout after 20 hours of fasting. Many studies confirm that working out on an empty stomach forces the body to tap into fat cells for energy when the insulin level is at its baseline.

  • I dont know guys.. Remember how most of us were thin when we were kids and teens? esp kids up to 80’s and 90’s. We move around a lot the whole day for entertainment. we don’t really care about food and being hungry is quite normal. maybe the mcD’s and KFC’s here and there.. but not that much. and mostly its carbs that drives us and we use them all the time. So basically its about being moderately hungry with decent amount of activities. its actually a mindset. eat when needed only. eat whatever. unless you want to build your body like models, then thats another story. These breakdown videos are just information scientifically. in real world, its just another day of normal living.

  • This is why intermitent fasting is such a huge trend nowdays. My personal advice is not to eat 4 hours before bed, and the last meal should be low calorie and low carb, no bread, no pasta, and exercise more, if you go to bed with a full stomach, there is no way to burn fat, you must be a bit hungry at 9 pm, that is a good sign that you will lose fat, but not very hungry because that is a starvation trigger.

    2) Is it possible to train for maximum strength while simultaneously maintaining a bodyfat of 5.3%?
    3) Will the body be receiving sufficient carbohydrates and fat for maximum health at 5.3% bodyfat?
    4) Is a bodyfat level of 5.3% a healthy condition to maintain throughout one’s life?
    5) Is it realistic to be able to deadlift 495 pounds for three touch-and-go reps without wrist straps while maintaining a bodyfat level of 5.3%?

  • Personally, I just listen to my body..if I’m hungry, I eat, workout 30 min or so later.. if not, I drink some water and start my workout…

  • I think Jeff needs to measure out that distance. No way that’s 90-120 yards he’s traveling.

    This also goes against everything I have ever heard about fat burning. Actual running, and definitely sprinting, is kicking your heart rate up well above the target fat burn zone. I know Jeff knows his stuff but this I have to question.

    At least in this instance I’m fortunate enough to end my five mile runs with a half mile-long steady increase in speed, culminating in a block-long sprint. I guess I have my bases covered.

  • While I don’t disagree with the content I will say, I prefer slower paced cardio because it takes more time. My life is depressing and filled with emptiness and staying busy keeps me from thinking about the crushing weight of my loneliness.

  • Most exercises have a built in rest interval. The only rest interval in sprinting is when you stop sprinting. Unfortunately, I didn’t see anything in the video that I’d call sprinting.

I was very active in all sports and regular weight training. But a couple of back and knee injuries and the responsibilities of life in general and BOOM!………not so much in great shape anymore lol. So many questions but for now primarily relating to this fat burning sprinting video. I 100% agree, these are the best! Did them when my knees were younger!   • Great video, but this won’t work for everyone. Losing weight is all about lowering the hormone insulin. Some people have higher insulin levels than others. When I started the Ketogenic diet last year and lowered my carb intake, I went from 104 kg to 95 kg, but have been stuck on that weight ever since. It seems I have stubborn high insulin levels. Recently I also try to combine intermitent fasting (or alternate day fasting water fasting) and it seems to work. Also see the videos of Butter Bob Briggs, Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Eric Berg on fasting every now and then, the perfect way to reduce your insulin levels.

  • This is all a bit misleading.
    There is no real way to “not burn carbs and burn fat instead”.
    Every body works the same, you burn your glycogen store first, then your fat reserves are being attacked.
    If you want to really lose your fat, you have to train long enough for your fat to be consumed.
    Intensity doesn’t really matter, all intensities burn fat, it just depends how much. High intensity is obviously more output so fat burned at a quicker rate, BUT since high intensity can’t be maintained long, its not rocket science to say that going with lower intensities (say, 60-70% max output) is preferable for fat burn. All of this doesn’t take a lab to figure out. And you will obviously get fat if you eat massive meals after any workout. Truth be told if you are a serious runner you will lose weight…Because the training is rigorous and if you keep your diet strict you will lose weight. In fact anyone who burns a lot of calories throughout the day (by walking and moving for example, instead of driving a car), will be trim.

  • Thanks a lot. Very interesting. Two questions. Sticking to 70% effort is not easy. Does that actually mean you are not supposed to go beyond that and let’s say 55% is OK too? And the second, what happens if I go beyond for a short period. Let’s say I need to go over a short climb on my bike. It is not easy to stay at 70%. Does that affect fat burning after I go back to below 70%? Also, does age have an effect on this? I am after all 50. But I did climb up to Zoncolan on my bike and also finished the Extended Sellaronda circle (Dolomites) this month. Really curious about this.

  • You are like Eric Berg. He too wants people to do some off the wall shit with specific timing and shit like that. He thinks that as long as you eat 10 cups of vegetables daily everything will work out. LOL If I eat vegetables I get diarrhea and my blood sugar goes nuts. You have the right idea about having to deplete glycogen but that is best done by intermittent fasting and/or a LCHF diet. Insulin is the master hormone, control insulin and the weight will fall off.

  • Very good video. The general government’s advice is wrong. They tell us to “EAT LESS”, but this is of not much help because what they should be telling us is “EAT LESS OFTEN.” Forget 5-6 meals and eat only 1-3 closer together so you have a nice window of no insulin in your bloodstream so your body has a chance to start burning this extra fat. Poor insulin is working too hard, just give her a break of 12-20 hrs, and your fat will start melting away. It’s called intermittent fasting.

  • Good content. Confirms, in my view, that low carb is only useful if you’re racing endurance in something where you have limited access to carbs. Self supported ultras, Mountain Marathons for e.g. where you have to carry your own food. Running longer whilst carrying fewer calories and therefore having a lighter pack makes tactical sense.

  • It may certainly be true that at a lower intensity a higher percentage of the energy comes from fat, but if you want to lose fat it’s all about being in a caloric deficit. More calories burnt = more weight loss. It’s important to note that these tests only test a limited time window while for fat loss it’s more about the calorie balance at the end of the day, end of the week, whatever.

  • I think you’re looking at it wrong, sprinting and jogging are entirely different exercises. sprinting will get you better at sprinting (short bursts at near max speed), and jogging will get you better at jogging. (long distance running at a lower speed)

  • Guys. lost a ton of weight does not need to be hard (I used to think it did). I will give you some advice now. Look for a popular fat burn secrets called Custokebon Secrets (search on google).   • Those masks are not comfortable. Before I used one I thought it gave one oxygen but quit the opposite. It just measure the carbon dioxide exhaled. I got lucky and was in roll in a 1 year long research study at our University. They were study cardio, resistance, and combo groups. To see which was best for cardio vascular health. I got $300 bucks for going to work out for 3 days a week.

  • Great video! If you are running long distances at a time and per week you need to ensure your vitamin k2 intake is up to avoid calcification of your arteries caused by cardiovascular stress during long duration and intense activity.

  • I dont feel well when i excersicing on an empty stomach. I drink one cup of water to start my metablosim and then i do my work out, i let my body rest and then i have a healthy breakfast.

  • Glycogen is stored in muscles and the liver. The only time glucose is stored as fat is if you eat a ridiculous amount of glucose and the body has used all it needs, and then it might start storing it as fat, but it actually takes a lot of energy to transfer carbs in to fat. The majority of fat stored on your body is from the fat you eat. So this is bollocks. It also doesn’t explain how the body loses fat, well basically if you don’t eat enough food, your body breaks fat down to use as energy. But it’s best to aim not to get overweight in the first place.   • When I weighed 200 lbs and got into running I was running and not much seemed to happen. When I had my last meal mid afternoon and get up the next morning and run. It was hard for about 30 days. Then I noticed my longer runs getting easier and weight started coming off.
    So for training for long runs I think the not eating before produces better results. I lost 60 lbs in 7 months and my race times got better.
    The December before I changed my diet I ran a 3:35 marathon and one year I ran a 3:01.55.

  • I think it depends on your bodyweight and what you are trying to accomplish. I wanted to lose my belly fat, so I was exercising and saw minimum results when I did it later in the day after I got all my calories. I started walking on an empty stomach for 4 hours straight, like 4 days a week and I seen results the next week. I think if u are trying to build muscles and dont have alot of body fat to lose, it maybe wise to get something In your system for energy, so u wont become fatigued after an early lengthy, intense, sweaty workout.

  • I gained 5 kgs in the lockdown! Im a PT and weightlifter/Strength Athlete. I fell in love with running again and biking as a new sport. As soon as my workplace opened (i work in a gym��) and stepped on the scale and it showed 100kg…..couldn’t explain it to myself first because i ran 4 times a week for the last 3 or 4 weeks before that. But it doomed on me almost instantly. There was very little other movement besides the running… 1 week past and i lost 3 kg already. Im doing 8 hrs of Cardio and 4 hours of full body strength per week. Im driving my bike instead of my car and i really feel the change in everything. My sleep is much better i no longer crave those delicious sweets and yeah the only thing that i can tell everybody as a PT. Just start and keep moving doesn’t matter how slow or much you do it in the beginning. You will reach you’re goal! I watched a ton of your Videos GTN and i love it. I live in Germany and im searching for a sprint triathlon for the next year! Thanks for the motivation guys! You’re the best on YT when it comes to the Topic!

  • So basically, cut out sugar and carbs, exercise to burn stored glucose in muscle cells and have your stored fat replenish your muscle cells all while cutting out carbs.

  • I go for a 5 mile walk in my house (since my house has a literal circle that’s perfect for walking laps) and it usually takes an hour. It makes me feel really strong and then when I pick up something to eat I don’t feel guilty.

  • I am intermittent fasting 10hours then working out waiting an hour then eating. If you work out before you eat you burn your excess fat stored in your body. If you work out after you eat, you burn it will take longer to burn the excess fat you have stored because of what you recently consumed. Muscle mass does diminish, but only if you don’t eat right.

  • I think it depends on the duration of the workout one that last longer than 45 min or over an hour might want some fuel but otherwise there’s prob no need due to the glycogen already stored.

  • I exercise on an empty stomach, i have a green tea and water and a pre workout before gym only. The tea stops me from feeling dizzy and the pre workout keeps my energy up so i can work out for a long time. I also take creatine, which helps too.

    I was always taught that fat burning was the greatest in HR Zone 2 (60% to 70% Max) and when you get to HR Zone 3 (70% to 80% Max) (which I was always taught was aerobic zone) you start using more carb than fat because fat is metabolised slower than fat as the body can’t metabolise it fast enough.

    Is this inherently wrong then?

    It seems to work for me when I am trying to lose weight. My main sport is cycling and much of it on a turbo cycle. This means a lot of my work is in the endurance side with my heart rate being in HR Zone 3 for the vast majority. I tend not to lose any weight but get fitter. If I add walking to my schedule and do say 5k walks 4/5/6 times weekly and keep my pace in HR Zone 2 I see weight loss.

    Obviously weight loss is not only completed with exercise, nutrition has a huge amount of say in it.

    So basically I found the video very interesting but am confused (which is easily done) in relation to weight loss of fat. Am I still right in thinking that HR Zone 2 is a good place to be for fat burning and weight loss?

  • I’m in the second time group, and need to eat before, or I get nauseous and sluggish. I workout in the morning, a half hour after I eat. I actually have more energy in the evening, but it’s hard to fit exercise in at that time. Thanks again for the great info!

  • An empty-stomach workout for me is the best. I never am too hungry in the morning so when I finish my exercise after a minimum of an hour, I look at my breakfast afterwards as a “treat” knowing I’ve done my exercise for the day and that I can from there on rest and be satisfied with myself. The rest of the day just includes staying away from junk which isn’t the easiest, but it’s not that difficult either if you put your mind to it.

Here’s the thing, you are always, always, coming from a “loosing weight” goal. What about folks that workout to maintain a healthy, fit body.   • I personally do not like to exercise on an empty stomach.  I have a friend who swears by it but I like to have something in me, toast with pb or a banana and some milk, something to fuel me so I’m not distracted by feeling hungry.

I always thought of it as personal time for just you and me, you telling me some helpful information and me being able to use it:) I personally cannot eat in the mornings. I never eat breakfast, even though they say it’s important. I just can’t seem to stomach the thought of eating until lunch. However, I do know that on days where I will be doing a lot (kickboxing, HIIT or just a super busy, on-my-feet-all-day day) I eat a snack right before bed the evening before, so I’m not starving in the morning. It usually works for me…

  • Hello everyone:) I’m so happy to see this topic going on…here’s my impression: recently I have noticed that when I do my exercise earli(er) in the morning, the sweat breaks through more quickly! It was a random discovery since my schedule had not let me the time to exercise in the morning hours but this one time thing was a really positive discovery:)

  • YAY, Q&A Wednesday is back! I’m with Jessica on this one, I eat three square meals a day (with the rare treat every now and then) and do my workouts when I can fit them into my busy day. I find it hard sometimes to schedule in workouts without mucking about with when I eat, especially when having a family, I feel it more important to at together then separately. I have heard exercising on an empty stomach is better for iou and did try it but found it really wasn’t for me!!

  • Jessica looking for an answer regarding weight training. If I’m doing a workout that uses weights i.e… your 10 Minute Solution Bootcamp dvd and doing this 3 or 4 times a week. If I want to see more muscle definition do I need to do additional weight training? I also do full body push ups in my floor work 3-4 times a week.

  • I get sick if I have food in my stomach. I work out pretty early though but if I am hungry I can only eat a few select foods and in small amounts, like a handful of almonds. I have to be careful drinking during workouts too. I can only take small sips of water during workouts. Thanks Jessica!

  • Long and slow. its a marathon, not a sprint. Nothing burns fat and saves glycogen like steady state. walking or gentle cycling. That is science. walk 3 miles a day steady approx one lb of fat every 12 days or so. But the big thing is no fatigue to interfere with recovery from other things.

  • I always exercise in evenings, two hours after my meal.   Also every morning thirty minutes before breakfast I stretch my whole body. Thank you so much for the video.:)

  • I have one meal a day so I wake up, go to work (part time so just till 12) come home, drink a healthy homemade smoothie, workout, at about half 5 I have my one meal (dinner), then I go for 2 walks because I have 2 dogs and then I laze around

  • How do you answer the last “solution”? How do you control your insulin levels? You need 2500 calories per day to maintain your weight, for example if you want more muscle not weight loss. You will always be eating and thus producing insulin; and carbs are needed for muscles. Every channel has its own logic and barely a solution

  • I work a 7:30-4 job mon-fri so I was trying to get up at 4:30 to get a work out in before having to get ready for work. I would wake up, eat something light, wait 10-15 min and then workout. But, it left me with NO energy by 2pm…and with a toddler, it just wasn’t flying. So now, I wake up later, and when I get home from work, I exercise for an hour. My tot even tries to join me! I find that I am much more energized, I hit it harder, and am more controlled. And, it leaves me with energy for the remainder of the night. This is my new schedule and it works.

  • cant believe you just said “belly fat”.. i hope you realize it’s impossible to “target spot fat-loss” Some people loose facial fat last, while either loose lower or upper ab fat last. Just sayin

  • Carbohydrates-specifically, GLUCOSE-is the only fuel the human brain uses.
    And why on earth would one want to restrict the brain of anything it needs?
    Perhaps it explains why it seems sexy, athletic people are dim? No glucose to fuel their brains.

  • I can’t workout in the morning until I’ve had my coffee…just isn’t going to happen.  However, once I’ve had my coffee I can’t workout because of the “sloshing” (it makes me sick)…so I just gave up, I have my coffee and then breakfast when I’m finally “awake” THEN workout.:)

  • I just have a light/low fat cheese stick and water before I work out in the morning. Mostly because I wake up hungry and I need something to fuel me until breakfast. But if I work out at night I work out before having dinner because I don’t want a whole meal on me while working out.

  • I’ve found that I’m too weak to exercise before I’ve had breakfast so I exercise in the evenings when I get home from work, an hour or so after dinner

  • So,every body is indeed different..Ok,now we know!! I must have nourishment before a morning workout. I am an early riser and I have no problem with breakfast first thing…My husband,on the other hand,can fall out of bed,have a cup of coffee, (ugh,on an empty stomach! I would die..)then jump into exercise mode…Once again,a death sentence for me,not for him.This brings me to another question..I workout in gear similar to what you wear,more exposed skin.He insists on wrapping himself up like a mummy,apparently old school sweat-it-off style. I know of no one else that still uses the “sweat suit” technique. What do you think? Good,bad or,as with the eating issue,personal preference? ( He does looks kinda adorable all bundled up like that,but that info will be between,well,apparently all of us…GO BODY GO!!!

    I am definitely in the first group. I have to workout first thing in the morning or it’s too hard to fit it in later once the kids all get up (no one naps anymore). And I can’t bear to eat anything first. I actually feel like it curbs my appetite and I eat less overall throughout the day. I’ve been doing this for years this way, but I used to do it the other way when my 3 oldest were small. To everything there is a season!
    I have a question about Tabata and HIIT. It seems like they do overlap a lot in principle. What is the difference?
