When people broke up their 3 hours of sitting with 5-minute walking breaks once an hour, the function of the arteries in their legs was not negatively impacted. “Breaking sitting time with short walking breaks is a countermeasure that protects arterial function against the harmful effects of prolonged sitting,” says study author Saurabh Thosar, PhD, an assistant professor at the Oregon. Counteract Too Much Sitting With This 5-Minute Trick. A sedentary lifestyle, which often means sitting for long periods of time, isn’t good for your overall health and may increase your risk of heart disease or diabetes. This isn’t particularly welcome news if you have a desk job where you typically spend 8 hours a day sitting at a desk in front of a screen.

Stand in between a doorway with your arms at 90 degrees. Lean slightly forward to feel your chest expand and then pull your arms down an inch. You should feel your shoulder blades coming toward each other.

While holding this posture, adjust your hips and legs so that your ankles. Sedentary behavior, typically in the context of sitting for extended periods of time, has emerged over the past decade as a focus for research on health and longevity. Various studies have linked too much of it to depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some cancers–causing concern for those of us who work long hours in front of a computer.

Let’s assume that the average adult spends 5 hours every day sitting down in front of their office desk, plus an additional hour during their commute and. 30 Minutes of Exercise Can Counteract a Day of Sitting. Modern humans spend way too much time sitting down. This article explains why sitting most of. If a standing desk isn’t an option, take five-minute breaks from sitting every 30 to 45 minutes.

Stand up and walk around a bit. Maybe even perform a few of the exercises below. Even if you have a standing desk, you should still take breaks every now and then for some movement.

Hip extension is the opposite of what happens when you are sitting (hip flexion), and the glute bridge is the perfect way to start counteracting that. Keep your hips neutral (engage your core), and work the muscles of the hips and legs. Exercising for an hour a day may be enough to counteract the harmful effects of sitting for long periods, a new study from Norway finds.

The results show. We know that if you stand up for just one or two minutes every hour, it can reduce the negative effect of sitting all day. Technically, you don’t even have to move, the act of standing alone helps.

  • Are you supposed to stretch both legs? Currently, only my right leg is bothering me. I don’t have a tennis ball so I only used a rolling pin followed by the stretches.

  • I’m 16 but have recently had index finger pain in my right hand in the last few weeks and gets worse when I play video games so I was wondering if it’s normal and if video games have contributed to the pain? Also thank you for the videos, it helps a lot:). I have also just realized in this edit that it is very slightly swollen, any advice on what it could be?

  • Yellow nails: nail polish
    Red eyes: soap

  • you are doing it wrong, you cannot release IT band, you just need to engage inside thigh muscle(medial ones) by muscle mind connection so as to create balance for overall thigh..

  • there is limet of reaeating i saw some hacks were same in the video it ‘ ok but same hack in same video is not ok i am angry of this

  • Dr. K, is this same prescription applicable for an IT band that clicks and pops on the side of the knee? I had weeks of PT with no success. I really enjoyed your video. I am now a subscriber.

  • Awesome, thank you. This has just helped me through to the completion of a heavy block of training on the bike. The outside of the left knee was letting me know that it wasn’t happy so I got out the TP ball, did as you said and that cleared it up really quickly. Great advice that I have logged for the future.

  • Doctor I have an problem that I cannot write properly. My index finger can’t support to write. My index finger is trembling as I try to write. I write very well but I haven’t been able to write for a few months. I showed the bone doctor but no result. I need to write better. Plz tell me doctor.plz suggest any option doctor

  • My IT band has prevented me from running for several years. After years of foam rolling and trying again only to be disappointed I was just about to give up. I followed this video yesterday and on my FIRST run after, I was able to run 3 miles with hardly any evidence of pain. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I get an important part of my life back!

  • My band feels like it ‘snaps’ out of place. It used to be a quick sharp pain. Then it would feel better. Last night however, it snapped…but never released. Pain all night. Feels like a stabbing pain on the outside (low) of my left knee. Cannot bend with out pain. Constant pain all the time now. Trying the exercises. Anything else to do?

  • Thank you so much! I’m currently in training for the Army and these stretches are going to get me through my foot marches next week.

  • Thank you for a clear instruction Kristie. The IT band hurts exactly as y explained and one is cautious not to do more damage with the treatment. But its a crippling probably overuse injury that makes normal walking difficult, not to mention running. As a sportsman its so stressful but I think I got the inflammation brushing a pool, leaning into the brush sideways, not through running.

  • Did you know 5-Minute Crafts is also the creator of bright side? That’s why it says Bright Side on the bottom. They are not copying bright side.

  • i once made a toothpaste slime all you gotta do is take out some toothpaste and leave it out for a couple of days ang your all done

  • Dr K, your info about the periformis muscle helped me greatly, and pointing me to the left side was exactly what I needed. Thank you.

  • Lovely Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you tried Dinanlinson Rocky Position Approach (should be on google have a look)? It is a good one off product for learning how to fix chronic knee pain minus the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my friend Sam after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical success with it.

  • I began this bad breath remedy only Two days ago but the difference has been exceptional. I have always wanted to ask this girl on a date but I am scared I`ll get probably get declined because of my breath. I finally feel confident enough to opt for it. Get this space watched! Tip name is Kαyden codomab, I found it on Google.

  • Doctor Jo, you’re such an angel and a godsend. I’ve been having some index finger pain from when I clenched a steering wheel a few years ago, and I think something got disrupted in there. I’m working through some daily videos to get my strength back, but I know doing these will help not only me, but my Mom who has arthritis. I also religiously practiced your TFCC video from when I had a hand injury (it’s not 100% yet but soon!) and it definitely helped!

  • I recently did a long bike ride and had outside of the knee pain. Wish I knew this before I started. Could have fixed the pain mid-ride rather than suffer all the way home.

  • Hey Doctor.
I have had ACL and meniscus repair surgery 4 months back.
Doctors have now advised me to do foam roller exercises to release my IT band.
Would you please suggest some stretches to release it.

    Thank you

  • I’m finding that now in my 50’s these injuries just popped up. Years and years of martial arts and running.. military etc and now I’m finally realizing I’ve had these types of injuries for years but never knew it. LOL.

  • This arthritis treatment method “Rοngοdο Ruzο” (Google it) is a wonderful product. I`ve got a broken spine, hip dysplasia & acute arthritis in both hips. I have utilized this during the winter and when my big toe knuckle gets painful due to donning shoes. You name an item for this, I might already have tried it. Hip issues are hard to cope with, however this item helps make the process simpler..

  • I’m not one to comment, but I have suffered from bursitis in my hip for years affecting movement and sleep. I’ve stretched, had deep tissue massages for months, foam rolled, gotten an xray, ending finally getting a coritisone shot and after four months the pain returned. Now it’ll sound silly that I watched your video, got a tennis ball, did exactly as you instructed and then stretched to actually wake the next day with no pain. I mean no bursitis either. Thank you, thank you. Cannot believe it has taken so long to find the right answer to my problem.

  • I have hip bursitis and outside knee pain now for ten months. I have done all the doctor visits, PT, etc. I am hoping these exercises help. My question is with my current hip bursitis is it advisable to use a tennis ball over my hip as it can be painful when that area is massaged?

  • Thanks for the Video! Forgive me for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you tried Dinanlinson Rocky Position Approach (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for learning how to fix chronic knee pain minus the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my old buddy Taylor after a lifetime of fighting got amazing results with it.

  • Doc pls help me..i walked for too much distance and even climbed an hill after reaching home i felt a small pain.but it gradually increased, it was a tour..now iam feeling too much pain above the kneecap..pls help.

  • My IT band just started sending me those lightning bolt messages. Followed your steps and voila! Sharp pains gone. Thank you so much!

  • I was in the hospital for almost a month I had to learn how to walk again do to being in the hospital bed Once I got home I started getting numbness in my left glute and the back hamstring they did test on my leg but they kept telling me they didn’t find anything that was back in 2006 now 2020 it is worst having a hard to sit or stand for a long time numbness has moved down to foot now and now getting hard to bend over or squat while working out it feels like something needs to be stretched out now my doctor says it’s static nerve any treatment for this Thanks

  • after 40 years of martial arts… my IT band on my left leg… and on my right front…have either started clicking.. or cranking up some hip pain when lifting my knees. II followed your suggestions Kristie… and great insights. Thanks!

  • I had a contusion to my left knee because of a work accident, I did physical therapy for it for a couple months, but now when I walk I can tell my weight transfers to my right side because my right foot is always more sore than the left one. Any tips on home stretches I can do to loosen up my right side?

  • Hi doctor.. my two hands all fingers are gradually weakness so I have go to hospital and said doctor then he will suggest me to do exercise
    But not working that
So, u can say what can I do

  • Can i have ur Facebook id or WhatsApp nmbr. Um going through a serious issue with my hand. At least 7 years um going doctors to doctors both in Bangladesh and India.

  • My hand and fingers were in extreme pain, I tried resting them but it didn’t work,I did this 3 times a day and after a week the pain was gone. Thanks so much

  • I tried this and it helps for a few hours but now I’m more sore and in pain than I was before. Is this just part of the process of breaking down those knots?

  • Wow thanks so much for this video, have been suffering pain in the IT
Band for about a week now, tried this out and felt better pretty much
straight away!  Think I need something a little hard than a Tennis ball
though wonder what would be equivalent to a lacrosse ball in Northern
    Ireland!

  • Wow have suffered from IT Band issues since late October (5 months) PT, Cortisone shots, etc…..nothing worked. Just came across this video yesterday and tried it. Just ran a 5k with ZERO pain when just days ago I couldn’t get out of the driveway without pain. Also used an IT band compression strap. Thank you Kristie you have me back at it!

  • I’ve gotta try this, I’m a mountain biker and when I stand and pedal sometimes my right knee gives me trouble for the first little while.

  • My knee doesn’t hurt while doing normal tasks, but if it bends a certain way the muscles/ligament/tendon behind my knee seems to pop and I have to slowly straighten my knee using my hands until I feel another pop. It’s very painful, and the same thing now seems to be occuring to the Achilles on the same leg. What does this sounds like to you? I find it odd that it doesn’t always hurt, only if my leg bends a certain way.

  • I hurt my pinky and I can’t really toe her the bottom of it the joint or something I can’t touch it it swelled up and is like green and made my hand pale and I can put it together

  • In 5 minutes I will be doing these exercises. I’ve been to doctor, been to physical therapy. No help. I don’t even know what I did to be able to “enjoy this pain” for 3 months. Can’t wait to try these exercises. Thanks so much!

  • You guys think of so many good hacks and the one where you can drink pop and eat popcorn while watching a movie really in but can you make it where you don’t have to hold it it’s a still an awesome idea that would be awesome if you didn’t have to hold it

  • I am running the London Marathon in 2 weeks and suffer with real bad knee pain since I did my longest training run about 3 weeks ago. I can now not get passed 2half miles before the knee pain comes on with a vengeance. I have tried loads of exercises and nothing has worked to help me stop the pain, I’m worried I am not going to finsh the marathon. Do you think your video will help sort out my problem and get the pain to stop so I can at least get pass such a short distance of running

  • You mean I shouldn’t get surgery and use pain killers?! There’s another way?! Nahh, I’m going to watch tv till the pain goes away. ;D

  • I’m not sure if I have this problem, I don’t have a permanent pain it’s just when I run, after 10-15 min starts to hurt like outside (just 1 knee). I go to the gym I can do all my exercises and nothing hurts, but when I run then the pain starts. 5 years ago it started and the doc told me my knees were ok, that it was just muscular, in that time it took like 4 months for dissapearing the pain completely, and after that everytime I started to run, again. I’m working out since 1 year and something, because they recommended me to ‘build’ stronger muscle, but still… it hurts:/, but it does not last that much the pain, next day I can walk without pain.

  • Did you know that your eyes can say a lot about your health? Do you want to check this? Well, we know how to do it! Just watch the video before 6:47 and you will understand everything.
And how regularly do you watch your health? Do you often visit doctors? Or only in case of acute necessity?

  • I hurt myself going heavy on leg curls. My pain was at the right outside of my knee. Doc said it was IT band. It hurt so much at times I couldn’t stand, but other times I could walk on it. Does this sound right to you? When can I work out with it again? I’ve been pain free for 3 weeks.

  • Does this work for pain on my knuckles cuz I was new to boxing and when I punched the bag for like the whole day my knuckles began to hurt

  • Great Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you heard about Dinanlinson Rocky Position Approach (Sure I saw it on Google)? • Thank you for the amazing video. I’m glad I watched your infomative session. I’m not going to lie, the 1st session brought me to tears but it gradually released the knot!

  • How do u treat a hand knuckle pain.. a pain that when u uppercuted something and the pain is in the middle finger… It doesn’t hurt the bone.. but the meat around it really hurts.. How can I treat it?

  • If you have health concerns, go see a doctor.

Although some of the things in this video are true, you should consult your doctor first.

You can more accurately measure heart rate by putting a 15 second timer, and counting to see how many times your heart beats in 15 seconds. Then, multiply that by four, and you will get your beats per minute. Normal resting heart rate is 60-100 beats per minute. If you are stressed, just got back from exercise, or are anxious or excited, your heart rate may be higher.

    Stay safe, and have fun!

  • Wow I wish I saw this march of 2019 I almost died because of diabetic keto acidosis plus the not eating sweets stuff is bull I’ve been off sugar and I feel awful
And I don’t feel any better

  • What do you think of using a large foam roller first just kind of shifting around to release knots, and then rolling up and down the muscle?

  • Yeah, I’ve been gaming a lot and have been having an ache in the center of my right hand whenever I let go of my controller. This really helped ease the pain so I’m going to keep doing this before and after gaming. Thanks!

  • What a wonderful shape you have. I am so impressed with your commitment to being healthy. Thank you for sharing your expertise and helping the rest of us to achieve our health goals.

  • I fell a pain in the outside of my knees when I bend my knee and lay on top of them…could this be ITB inflammation? If so, doing these exercises will help?

  • Hi Dr. Jo I walk a lot and after 45 minutes I start to see my fingers on the right side swell up. Is it due to poor circulation and if so what can i do and why is it happening? Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

  • I can’t thank you enough! This has been plaguing me for the last year. Took 20mins and it’s no longer an issue. can’t believe it was such a easy fix for something so painful.

  • Dear Dr. Ennis,
Thank you so much for showing this, it really helps. I also have a suggestion, How about if one leans onto a wall and places the ball where it hurts to relief the knot. This would achieve 2 things:
1You get to control how much weight you exert by controlling how much you lean (perfect balance between placing full body weight on ground and placing minimal pressure by hands)
2Your shoulder muscles won’t get cramps for being held tight for too long (especially if knot takes long to crack)

What do you think? Thx again♡

  • The only reason why you have those little things in your mouth on your lip (in the thumbnail) is because you have a lack of Vitamin C. If you don’t have any of this in your mouth but have white stuff on your nail(s), it means the same thing. How about some Orange Juice?

  • I hurt my knee doing ballet and it feels like it really heavy to walk on it also it hurts so move around and straighten and bend it

  • 7:05 brown yellowish orange stains?
Well I got some good news to the brown eyed people, if they could be functional, than you wouldn’t be able to tell at all aside from breath, but let’s be honest, they probably already popped a breath mint before you talked to them.

  • Hi. I have adductor tendonitis at distal insertion and quadricep tendonitis at patellar insertion. I was jogging 1.5 yrs ago and thats when it happened. Im a med student so I had to run around during my internship and didnt give it time to heal, plus im a vegetarian (could that also be a cause?) Anyway, now it has become chronic and has gone into degenerative phase from the inflammatory phase. How do I recover from this? Please help me, Im quite distressed.

  • Here is my point of view.

You are selfish human beings. You know why? Well, 5 minutes into the video, it says “BRIGHT SIDE” at the bottom in the centre. There are no excuses for that, so don’t try. Also, you are showing DANGEROUS life hacks. Not forgetting useless content of telling people how to do things “properly”. Every one of your videos have at least 5 fake things included. It’s just not right! And, stealing a fellow (more popular) YouTube channels videos? That is too far. Surprised you’re not being warned by them yet. Please just stop this dangerous content, maybe do family friendly (no danger included) arts and crafts! Anyways, this is just some advice, and I’m telling you not to steal peoples videos. Thank you!

  • Hello Dr Kristi. I wanted to thank you so much for this awesome video. I had no idea that you couldn’t stretch a muscle that had a knot in it and that it would make the knot tighter. That makes so much sense. I did the stretches and medicine ball work on my left leg this morning and for the first time in a couple of months I did not have any pain in knee!!!! I can’t believe it. The bottom left side of my knee has been gradually hurting the past couple of months and I had to stop squatting because of it. I cannot wait to hit the gym again.

Your video said to do these stretches every other day. Can I do daily them daily though? Or would that not give the muscle time to rest? Thank you again!

  • Hi. I know that this is unrelated, but when I was at the store with my uncle Air buying some milk, I was holding the door open for people. I saw a guy with a full cart. I held the door open for him and he rolled his cart in. When he was doing that, his cart accidentally skinned the back of my hand. He freaked out and apologized, but I just stayed calm and said, “it’s okay, sir. I’ve experienced worse pain than that.” I then looked at my hand. It wasn’t bleeding or anything, but the skin just peeled off. I didn’t cry, scream in pain, or get mad at him. I knew that it was just an accident and I forgave him for that. When me and Air were finished buying some milk, we left the store. The guy smiled at me and said, “thank you for your help.” And I said, “you’re welcome,” and smiled back at him. Does skin grow back on the back of your hand?

  • Close to a month my left knee has been bothering me, I assumed it was just stiff joints every now and then I would try to crack it which is propbably why it hurts more and is swelling a little more now. The swelling is pretty noticeable nothing too crazy. Whenever I bend my leg or squat my left knee feels in pain

  • The hand massager you recommended is very good for me… was worth the expense… like the idea of the pressure and acupressure… reducing any swelling in my hands…improving circulation… warming, relaxing muscles and tendons… then I do some stretching after. Thanks for the recommendation

  • I’m an artist and I guess I drew too much lately so my palm and fingers are really hurt even after I slept for 9 hours (it usually heals after I sleep). I tried doing this while watching and I can feel the effect already! It really helps! Thank you so much

  • My knees used to make a lot of cranking sounds from my teenage years. Now in my late twenties, they not only make cranking sounds but also pains.:(

  • My pain is really sharp and intermittent. Very random during the day but makes life so much worse. I don’t run or anything but i do sit a lot because of work. I’m not overweight at all.
I’ve been dealing with this problem for around 2 months and seems to get more often now. Now I’m issues leaning forward to pick something up even.
I’ll try these exercises after work see if it helps. Feeling hopeless though because I’ve been doing stretches and exercises as physio recommended but it doesn’t change a thing.

  • My knee out of know where started hurting and it hurts to walk up and down the stairs and that’s pretty much it. Also the second if I do it it will most likely hurt so idk what to do. Just watching him do it my knee hurts

  • Where’s the ball going when you put it under your leg? I was always told putting more pressure on the band is like pulling a bow string, which is what the problem is in the first place…tension, which will further agitate. So was advised to stay away from rolling the band directly. You might not have been putting it on the band though, you just didn’t mention where. I’m going to try that on the TFL though! I had been, till now, rolling my TFL with a foam roller, but it’s hard to attack it directly like that.

  • Im 15 and my both of my knee joints start hurting last year. I’m 180 cm and my doctor said that its due to the growth in puberty period. However they hurt so much even walking down the stairs. What can I do??

  • I’ve been having IT band issues for a few years as a bowler. I have to say this video has helped more than the 3 months of physical therapy I had to address it a couple years ago. These stretches are a GREAT day to day solution to not be in pain. Thank you!

  • My knee has been hurting for a few months, it started hurting after I was practicing some flips outside. There was one time after I flipped and I hit my knee on the grass, but it didn’t hurt at all. It hurts when I walk, run, go upstairs, jump, etc. I got an X-ray and they saw nothing. Pls help
