2-Week Power Walking Program to Build Fitness. by Jessica Smith. January 19, 2020. No Comments. The power of a good, brisk walk is a great starting point if you’re looking to improve your health.

It offers numerous health benefits, including a reduced risk of heart disease, lower body mass index and waist circumference, just to name a few. This two-week program is designed to kickstart your walking routine, but feel free to repeat it, add an extra day, lengthen your walk time and/or increase your pace (if you feel up for more) to extend the challenge. Be sure to listen to your body as you go, and adjust the recommendations to meet your personal preferences, schedule and current fitness level.

Power walking is an excellent way to improve your health, maintain fitness, and enhance your sense of well-being. If you use correct technique, power walking can help you transform a simple walk. Power walking is a fast style of walking that uses exaggerated arm movements to move faster and burn more calories than regular walking. Power walking is a great way to make your walks more intense while remaining lower impact than jogging.You’ll also engage more of your body without the need for a gym membership or fancy gear. Split up your walk into two parts—one in the morning and one at night (or other time slots that work for you).

Walk at an easy-to-moderate pace for all. Week 2: Change Your Pace. If you are power walking, you will probably be closer to 12 minutes a mile.

See this pace calculator to find out your pace and finishing times for certain race distances at your current pace. How to Complete a Power Walking Session: 1. Always start with a slow warm-up period. You don’t need to jump straight into your power walking session. Do this beginner’s 4-week walking program to help reduce pain and build strength. Start slow up to 10 minutes a day 3-4 times a week and build up.

Check with your doctor first. To get you started, Prevention ‘s former fitness editor Michele Stanten created a simple, 10-minute strength-training routine that targets your legs, butt, and feet. Do this routine 2 or 3 days a. With this plan, you’ll aim to burn an average of 300 calories per day, with a combination of walking, strength training and stretching. General recommendations are walking three days/week, strength training for 2–3 days/week and flexibility training two days/week (or more), but should be adjusted to meet your current fitness level and schedule.

Each week, add about two minutes to your walking time. In addition to walking, add strength training exercises — such as pushups, planks and squats — to your routine. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends these exercise guideline.

Depending on the intensity (moderate intensity or vigorous intensity), three to five days per week is recommended.2,3 One workout per week gives little training effect, but improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness accelerate rapidly when workout frequency is increased to three to five days per week.

  • I have no way to measure my steps (and don’t worry about it). I just want to move (for the joy of movement and cardio and toning and strength and flexibility) and this workout, like all of yours, did all that for me. I am not sure I would have noticed the music getting faster-I just knew you (and I!) were moving fast and working up a seat. I almost did a kickboxing one since you posted on Facebook recommending that people be open to doing other types of workouts, but the first two I clicked on incorporated stuff I don’t have like a ball and step or a chair that I didn’t have room for.   • +Kristy Yang. This gentleman can be critiqued on his level of fitness legitimately bc he is a personal athletic trainer, which is a coach for fitness and nutrition. If he was a toll booth operator or a bus driver, the comments may be out of line; here, they are as appropriate as critiquing a surgeon on their ability to use a scalpel, or a professional race driver in their braking technique.

    Bottom line: he’s a muffin-top.

  • What’s this guy on lol. Obviously doesn’t do anything to rid that weight from his stomach and as for the love handles, say no more.
    MY ADVICE: Get a decent pair of trainers and walk. Walk slightly quicker than you would usually, move your arms to the speed of your legs. This way you don’t look like a freak flaying your arms back and forth like an idiot as he portrays in his pathetic blog.
    Play a few games with oneself by finding a landmark… Such as a post box or even five or six lamppost ahead and try to guess how many strides it will take you to to reach. You’ll be surprised how accurate you become. You will feel the benefit after a few walks… This Guy thinks he has to use a young women, with a massive arse, to project his American/ English Bullshit.

  • I’m 42, and I started doing these workouts regularly during the covid shutdown. They are great! I’m not a person that enjoys working out (who does) but I’ve noticed a big difference in how I feel since doing these workouts. I sit at a desk most of the day, and I’ve been doing these workouts at least 3 times a week (sometimes more) and I have so much more energy, and my body is looking a lot better. My mood has improved. (Seriously, why didn’t I just workout before, it really does cure everything!) I love how customizable these workouts are. For example, I use 2-pound arm weights during these walking workouts. Helps my arms to tone up, and burn more calories! Thanks for these awesome workouts! I’m feeling ���� and I’m finally getting that it does feel good to sweat!

  • My steps on my fitbit charge were around 4660. I am not very flexibile so am struggling with soreness in my upper arms. I really try to stretch them, I plan to take a one day break in between the arm exercises in hopes that they will adjust. I love the walking workouts!! Thank you so much!!

  • Hello, thank you for this wonderful video. I was 83.5 kgs in the month of December when I started to walk. Then, I came across your video. I am now 72.5 kgs and I do still go in the morning out in the field doing the same way, walking as you have suggested. I started jogging very lately but the power walking technique has really helped me. I walk in the same pace, keeping the arms position exactly what you have showed. Thank you very much. You have changed my life and I feel so light and fit. LOL, all my pants are so loose that I have to tighten them. Thank you.

  • Been doing these for years, they really work. Went down from over 200lbs to around 160lbs in just a few months. It really starts getting effective when you throw in some dumbbells and leg weights!

  • I love these walks… They’ve helped hugely during the lockdown! I am fitter than I’ve been in many years, and I’ve noticed that waistbands aren’t so tight anymore. I’ve worn out two pairs of socks though…

  • I just started doing this along with a friend: we make a zoom meeting on one device, and turn on the video at our own homes on a different device. We turn off our Zoom audio and video and do Leslie’s walk simultaneously in our own homes… then turn on the zoom audio/video for a visit after exercising! IT’s fantastic!!!!

  • Firstly, if I came out of the house and thought everyone was looking at me, there’s no way I’d be walking like that.  Secondly, why make your walking so inefficient, when you can walk faster and more efficiently and burn as many calories as well as having the usable tool of being able to walk faster.  Thirdly, who takes health advice from someone who’s overweight.

  • I enjoy the workouts they are fun and easy to follow…I’d like to see more 20 to 25 minute workouts I do a morning routine than walk my dog and I do a 5 minute routine everyday on break which keeps me going… your team leaders are great enjoy the workouts with Nick, Nadia is good but she needs to remember to give a heads-up before the transition like count down and advise what we are doing next I find her a little choppy and for someone who has had knee surgery on both knees it can be hard to abruptly make a transition…all in all love you guys and keep on walking…I know I will…

  • I have walked with this lady for around 6 months and I absolutely love it. I was in a wheelchair for a year and had to loose weight to get my fourth replacement surgery done, I have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis diagnosed at 26 and I’m now 68. I have had my fourth replacement surgery done three days before Christmas 2018, I a started WW in March 2018. I lost four and a half stone to get my fourth replacement surgery done. I have now lost seven stone eleven pounds and at my goal for a year. Love being able to workout with you Leslie. I’m now awaiting my fifth replacement surgery done but I carry on my workouts!

  • I bought Walk At Home 3 mega miles during the strict lockdown in Italy. I love it!! I’m hitting 70 yrs old in a few months, but have been an avid exerciser for 50 years. This workout kept me physically and mentally fit. Now that our lockdown is over, I’m still getting up early to do the workout before heading out the door. These workouts are great for young and old alike.

  • I like all of the workouts I’ve tried so far this one is great, but I’ve just registered 2.55 miles and not 3.1 as I expected doesn’t really matter, I’m still moving a lot, but could the difference in the step length be responsible for this?

  • Hi Angie! If I’m reading this fitbit right my heart rate got up to 145, 5726 steps, and 627 calories burned. What?!! Doesn’t matter! I LOVED THIS WORKOUT!!! Before I knew it it was over! Love your infectious enthusiasm. You make me love working out!! Thank you!��������
