People are being critical because this is NOTHING like the original. He’s not using the right bread, the carrots are supposed to be pickled, Vietnamese people would never use mayo in their banh mi, turkey, lemongrass, garlic, turmeric, fish sauce, lime juice, or peanut oil. The only thing he got right was cilantro, which can be found in a lot of other dishes. I’m not criticizing the dish, I just wouldn’t call it banh mi. It’s a misconception and can lead to cultural ignorance.
Too many are critical of this sandwich saying it’s not even Vietnamese banh mi. This is his take on it which means it’s not going to be exactly like the original. Everyone has their way of doing things. And the “sexual” thing a few have commented on is probably all his whispers. Lol.
(sorry couldn’t fit everything in last comment!) I understand that it may lead to cultural ignorance but Google is merely a click away if people really want to learn about original banh mi. =)
I mentioned your channel on keto Sam I am FB group…you’d love her too…I encouraged group to follow you and I hope that helped! Thanks for all of your great work!
I don’t know why, but whenever a “Vietnamese” recipe is posted, there’s also a person just like yourself commenting about the inaccuracies or nontraditional use of ingredients.
Which is fine! C: But I’m curious, is a strict traditional approach important in Vietnamese culture?

Maybe it’s because a large portion of Hungry viewers are American, so he’s just doing it to be considerate? I mean, not all of this channel’s viewers know that coriander = cilantro.
Same things. Cilantro is the Spanish name for coriander, and is more widely known as cilantro because of the popularity of Mexican food in North America. This guy is English, but it’s a video aimed towards people celebrating thanksgiving, so he would just say cilantro to not be confusing.
Guys please be smarter than this. Keto is an exciting new fad that’s picking up way too much steam. It’s horrible for you. It tricks your body into doing things and operating in a way it was never meant to. Don’t cut out fruits, veggies and grains, ESPECIALLY if you’re any sort of performance athlete.
I don’t understand how anyone could call this “oversexualized.” Unless of course you’re turned one by the words “turkey breast” in which case you have bigger problems…
I didn’t notice any horniness from this host… these comments are so weird. The food looks delicious and I am definitely incorporating these tips. Awesome vid, fish sauce! I had no idea. And I love cilantro, it is used so much in our cuisine. Can’t wait to try this sandwich very soon!!

I always buy organic ground turkey breast. When I make my burgers, I mix in grated, zucchini, green onion and grated apple. They come out fabulous and juicy!
If he is going to call it Vietnamese banh mi then he should make it like how it’s supposed to be made because this can give other people a misconception of what banh mi really is. The only thing that is accurate in this video is how the banh mi LOOKS like with cilantro and carrots (it’s a staple for the carrots to be pickled). Nothing about this qualify it for being Vietnamese banh mi. Aside from that, the food itself looks delicious. I just wouldn’t call it banh mi.
I am new here and have been following you on YouTube for a while now. Thank you so much for all the information on healthy foods. I have changed up so many things I buy now thanks to the information about what is bad in our foods.
I am growing kale and purple sweet potatos in my aparment and balcony and was wondering how to prepare the sweet potato, oh man that looks easy and good. Wow how much you stuff that sandwich, but i wonder how it wil taste. What i am growing is just beginning and small and so i wil buy and try. Yes i see its and older video and gonna see if you have more here. Man it looks good. Greetings from Holland.
That turkey sandwich looked delicious. Yes, killing it! I usually bake or boil before peeling the sweet potatoes. I used to be a movie buff but, not as much since YT.
He shouldn’t have called it a Viet banh mi but instead an adaptation of banh mi using Thanksgiving leftovers. Hence, the turkey and non-traditional ingredients. I’ve seen plenty of Vietnamese use mayo, the homemade kind that spreads like butter on toasted baguette. As for the other ingredients, people will always use substitution based on their preferences. My Viet friend uses lemongrass and fish sauce to marinate pork for her banh mi. I agree that it’s not original but food will always change.
