This is a recipe inspired by a Nigella Lawson segment on Food Network a few years ago. I have used my family’s favorite chili recipe and favorite cornbread and you should feel free to do the same. We like our chili spicy, so here is the recipe that I came up with, followed by the cornbread we like.. Chili 1 pound ground beef. 1 medium onion, chopped. 2 cloves of garlic, chopped. 1 jalapeno pepper, chopped. 1 chili in adobo sauce, chopped. 3 8 oz. cans tomato sauce. 1 15 ounce can of hot chili beans. 1 teaspoon ground cumin. 1 Tablespoon chili powder. 1 Tablespoon olive oil. 2-3 squares of milk chocolate or 2-3 Hershey’ Kisses. Salt and pepper to taste. Heat olive oil in pot and add ground beef, onion and garlic. Brown ground beef until no longer pink. Drain if necessary and add back to the pot. Add the jalapeno pepper, chili in adobo sauce, tomato sauce, chili beans, cumin, chili powder, chocolate, and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 1 hour.. Cornbread Topping Cornbread 1 box of Jiffy Cornbread Mix. Shredded Cheddar Cheese. Make according to the directions on the box, which are 1 egg and 1/3 cup of milk added to the mix.. After the cornbread is all mixed well, spread on top of the chili. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese.. Place in a 400° preheated oven for 20 minutes.. Serve with any condiments you desire. Some suggestions are shredded cheese, sour cream, cilantro, guacamole, sliced scallions or whatever your favorite condiment is when you have chili.. AB, love your videos! My GF is a vegetarian, so you know that basically makes me a vegetarian… any substitutes for this dish or other dishes that can be vegetarian? Thanks!
I’m a Texan girl, and we call this tamale pie! I know, it’s neither a tamale or a pie, but there it is, lol! I usually have this with a jalapeño cornbread topper and sweet corn baked in as well. I add a salad to try to stave off the “itis” and make it a bit healthier, but I’m sure the sweet tea makes it futile, lol! Loving all your recipes and videos! ♡
AB! We all appreciate your using ingredients that simplify a meal, but doesn’t sacrifice flavor. People! Don’t hit the drive thru on the way home. Give this a try. You’ll be happier and healthier that you did. Thanks AB
Thank you for the video. I have leftover brisket chili and a bag of Honey sweet cornbread mix. It’s about to go down. And oh yeah I got my pillow ready lol.. Thanks again
New Subscriber in da house!! Wow! Looks simple and delicious!! Watching at at 3:30 a.m. Can’t wait to try making it! What size is your cast iron pan?? it’s an awesome size!! Thanks again! Blessings to u & urs!
Um can yall do a vid making some REAL cornbread. That mix shit has way to much sugar and not enough moisture. Im sure yall got some southerners that moved there that can teach yall
Looks good and I’m going to try it. My son found your videos and talent me this. Lol I was tickled because he thought he was showing me something new. I told him I’ve been following you for over a year and that I learned how to do my peach cobbler from your video ❤
And then, in the dark of night, she visited the refrigerator, grabbed a spoon and the massive dish with the leftover chili in and returned to bed. The next morning she did the “walk of shame” to return the empty dish to the kitchen.
I add it for an additional depth of flavor. If you have ever had mole sauce, it has chocolate added to it, also. It just adds a different, delicious flavor to the chili.
Simple recipe that I was able to handle except I browned some ground beef first and added it to the mix. Your style is my favorite, quick and simple. thank you.
Yes add 1 Tablespoon of chili powder. I forgot about it and added an annotation and also listed it in the ingredients. I did in fact add it, but it wasn’t shown on camera. Sorry for the confusion.
I love the plate u used! It matches your checkered blouse. I definately want to try out the recipe as well… too bad baking powder costs like an arm and a leg here.
Ooh yessss hontey!!!! I lovd that you used you own recipe for the seasoning. I see so many using packets ( if thats what you do) and thats ok, i just think when you take the time to step away from the packet people appreciate you more for taking the time to show them what you like. YAAAAS!!!!
I guess Tasty knew that “Cheesy cornbread topped chili” was going to get more views than “cheesy jiffy on top of taco vegetable stew”. It sure fooled me.
Remove the celery, peppers (I just hate them), chick peas, and taco seasoning, add some shredded carrots if you want a bit more texture, use salt, black and red pepper, chili powder, and other spices to taste (taco seasoning has too much cumin for chili), and browned beef or pork (or any meat really, these just hold the flavor the best), corn is optional, red beans are the best (I think some are labeled chili beans) black beans are OK but not as good unless it’s a preference, pinto beans work for everything if it’s all you have. Plenty of tomato makes a good sauce, two-three tomatoes per pound of meat, cans are also perfect. Plain tomato sauce adds thickness, but so does a cornstarch slurry. Let it all cook together and take up the flavor, crock pot makes it super easy. If it’s a pan like this, just let it simmer a while and keep it stirred. Then add the cornbread and finish.
Your an excellent cook! I’ve tried 3 of your recipes and they were great I plan on purchasing that creole kick from sweetsmokiejoe.com because you use it often so it must be good. Cooking all these you tube meals makes a family happy since we are all stuck in the house over this pandemic. Thanks
Like lipstick on a pig, this is an abomination Sometimes I think Buzzfeed would take take bean paste and tofu, glop it together with a ton of salt and make a patty, bake it, then stuff it in a dinner roll and label it a hamburger. This is not chili in any reality. Warmed over spicy tomato salad…yeah that’s what I call this nonsense.
That was some weird ass chili. Why so many vegetables? Where’s the tomato sauce? Where’s the meat? (Yes, I understand that there can be vegetarian chili, before I get comments about it.)
There’s something I don’t like about this guy’s face. I kind of want to punch it. Why do people feel like they have to put on a character all the time?
Came here to see your recipe for cornbread and was pretty disappointed. I mean what’s the point of having only half the meal be fresh and add boxed stuff on top of it, or vice versa like the cheesecake brownie. It’s not like brownies or cornbread is difficult to make anyway so why not spend 10-20 more minutes doing the real thing?
I made this today and I have non vegan roommates that were asking if I made extra and claiming birthday status to get a bowl lol! Great recipe Liv, thanks a bunch. This is a regular in the fall/winter recipe rotation!
Watched this video last night and then immediately made the recipe and it was amazing!!!! My whole house loved it and I think I made it for like $3 This was awesome!!!

Thank you so much Lynn!! This chili has become a family favorite!! The kids love the cornbread over this wonderful chili!! You were right!!! The chocolate adds richness without the chocolate flavor!! The recipe is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Yes! This is what I was looking for! I plan to make it tomorrow for Super Bowl Sunday for my husband. I hate football, but he loves it, especially the Super Bowl, so I try to make it a special day for him. Thanks for sharing this recipe, and for doing your video with no silly frills or gimmicks. @kareemtiheed That would be a great idea. The only thing would be if your crockpot isn’t safe to put in the oven, you may need to pour the chili back in your original pot before adding the cornbread and cheese to bake in the oven. You would need to brown the ground beef, onion and garlic on the stove before pouring that part in the crockpot and then you could add the other ingredients and cook everything all day. Hope this answers your question.
Just got done cooking it and it was so good. I made a deep square pot of it and they ate it ALL… I had already cooked a little extra so next time I guess I have to make even more…
All i can say from the second I saw u in TV, I loved u. I love how u speak. The way u chose your words. The way u personify food. Makes u a great artistic and attractive woman. I love your spirit and food
This chili and cornbread looks delicious, Lynn. I will definitely try it! I loved the look of the dish you served at the end with the toppings! -Betty:)
Love Nigella but i hate how she showers almost everything with cilantro. Guacamole is understandable but it seems like one out of three of her recipes have coriander/cilantro.

best to use real chocolate 80% dark not crappy hershey’s, which isn’t actual chocolate by milk solids and a little bit of cocoa powder added
It is from Pampered Chef. It is called the Mix ‘n Masher. You could probably google Pampered Chef and find out if it is available in Australia.

I may have just entered heaven. I like nothing more than cornbread with my chili and now I can have them together in one pan??? Shut the front door!
This chili and cornbread looks delicious, Lynn. I will definitely try it! I loved the look of the dish you served at the end with the toppings!

I just noticed how long it’s been since i actually clicked on a video of yours and i haven’t made a recipe of yours in a long time. Hmmm
Love Nigella but i hate how she showers almost everything with cilantro. Guacamole is understandable but it seems like one out of three of her recipes have coriander/cilantro.
