  • I absolutely adore Yogurt! I even make my own at home. However, if you want to keep the probiotics and the enzimes do not cook them… Heat kills the good bacteria in yogurt.

  • My uncle is the regional manager for a medium-sized window installation company. For the past 12 weeks, he’s had to endure a severe glass shortage. His employees have vacated the warehouse, and constructed makeshift shelters in the nearby woods. During the chaos, they looted his property, leaving him entirely without glass. Out of desperation, he single handedly forged hundreds of replacement windows from pulverized bread squares and plaster. With summer fast approaching, and the necessity for 24-hour air conditioning, he had to think fast and improvise. The bread windows have so far withstood two rainstorms, and a scattering of light drizzle. Aside from the warehouse interior being left in complete darkness, everything else has returned to normal. Occasionally, vagrants from the forest will collect bread crumbs from the parking lot, which they roll into marble-sized snack balls to be sold for lose change. But my uncle startles them by making siren noises into a megaphone, and they typically retreat in panic.

  • I’ve totally made yogurt pasta sauce before! One time I was out of any sauce and I didn’t realize it until the pasta was cooked so I mixed some Greek yogurt we had with some Italian seasoning and garlic and it was amazing!

  • Fun fact: you don’t need a scoby

    As long as you live starter kombucha, the scoby will grow on its own. Once the first batch in done, you’ll have a thin film that will slowly get thicker and develop into a scoby. A thicc scoby makes the brewing process more vigorous, but it’s a blob of cellulose so it isn’t an end-all-be-all for making kombucha.

  • Proud that I started brewing kombucha BEFORE the Shaq vid. Otherwise, this is great. I’ll now direct friends to this short vid instead of the Pro Home Cooks one, which is also great but longer and a bit more intimidating.

  • Just a heads up, you don’t actually need the big mushroom thing to get started. It’s called the pellicle, and is often confused for the SCOBY. The SCOBY is actually the finished kombucha product you add to your next brew. The pellicle is a by-product, and will form on its own. It does aid in the process though so once you have grown your own pellicle you should transfer it into your new batches.

    You brew kombucha is a channel specializing in the topic and this lady’s been at it for years. Helped me a ton in my noob brewing and answers a lot of questions.

  • Love your channel, man. But you definitely do NOT need to buy a scoby to start making kombucha. Just buy a bottle of kombucha and pour it in your sweet tea. When your batch finishes in 10-14 days you’ll have also made a (thin) scoby. People online will tell you this first batch won’t be good because the scoby isn’t strong. I thought my first batch tasted great.

    For the newbies out there:
    If you can’t find unflavored kombucha, using flavored kombucha to get started is 100% fine. Flavored kombucha as all the same bacteria and yeast as normal, unpasteurized kombucha. In fact, you can’t buy raw kombucha if you’re underage because the alcohol content is too high. Raw kombucha has a 1.5-2% abv and you need an ID for anything above.5%. I actually forgot my ID the last time I went to buy kombucha for starter so I just bought some of GT’s ginger buch and used that. The flavor gets so diluted and washed out that it’s a non-issue. I couldn’t detect any ginger flavor in the first batch. So if any teenagers are watching this, just buy any kombucha you can find next time you go grocery shopping and you can get started.

    Also, you can use whatever sugar you want/have for kombucha (as long as it’s real sugar and not stevia like he said lol). I’ve used brown sugar from the beginning because it’s what I had and my friends who also make buch prefer mine because the flavor is more complex. I don’t even bother with 2F anymore because the flavor is so good and my scoby has gotten so large it actually keeps some of the carbonation in. It basically forms a low pressure seal on the top of the drink. And because I have a 2 gallon jug with a spigot at the bottom ($15 at walmart), I don’t agitate it too much when serving.

    Finally, and this is personal preference, but I like to get my buch in the fridge when the bitterness from the black tea is gone, but you can still taste the tea. I’ve found that this seems to be the inflection point for when the drink goes from sour to vinegary.

  • So I’m genuinely confused: why do you need starter kombucha if you have the scoby? Wouldn’t those two things serve the same (or similar) function? Every time my sister has made kombucha she hasn’t used starter booch (afaik) and it comes out great!

  • Scoby is the starter tea itself, not the “mushroom” which is nothing more than cellulose. In fact if you try to start a fresh kombucha with just the mushroom it won’t work, but you can start it with just a cup of the liquid. DISLIKE’D

  • You forgot the why part. This shows its head every 10 years or so with a new set of nonsense health benefits that are never proven. I would get it if it tasted great but it doesn’t even do that, unless slightly off lemon ice tea that has a very slight chance of giving you food poisoning is your thing.

  • Use green tea, ideally not some trashy one but real green tea to get extra healthy benefits from kombucha. Or combine half green and half black. Its a bit painful to see him use some crap of a tea called ‘ice tea’.

    Significantly, for safety and also success, it’s important to not use unfiltered tap water, as the chlorine content can harm the scoby and allow harmful bacteria to grow if the starting product isn’t acidic enough so be sure to used filtered water!
