Dietary supplements include vitamins, fish oil, herbs, minerals like calcium, and more. And if you take one, you’re not alone. About half of U.S. adults do. Consumer Reports has the details on supplement ingredients to always avoid. These 15 potentially dangerous supplement ingredients can cause.

Fiber: If you’re eating your veggies, you should not need a fiber supplement. The goal should be about 25g-30g of fiber a day (about 14g per 1000 calories you consume). CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid): One of the most popular “leaning out” supplements – it’s a. Sexual Enhancement Supplements to Avoid Yohimbe increases blood flow by raising blood pressure and was considered effective for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac, until severe cardiac risks were discovered.

It is also found in bodybuilding supplements. Country mallow — a natural source of ephedrine — fits into all three categories. As you get older, health advice like “Drink your milk to grow big and strong” gives way to “Take your calcium pills to avoid osteoporosis.” Taking your vitamins is especially important post 50, “as the absorption of nutrients and minerals and vitamins can decline,” explained Dr.

Mickey Barber, president of Cenegenics Carolinas. While most women know that high mercury seafood, alcohol, and cigarettes are off-limits during pregnancy, many are unaware that some vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements. Omega-3 fish oil supplements may tame inflammation and improve your mood, but when you take these supplements with herbs that thin the blood—such as ginkgo biloba or garlic—they may prevent clotting and can lead to uncontrolled bleeding, Dr. Cooperman says. To be safe, split them up by at least two hours.

People who take methotrexate for RA management should definitely avoid chaparral because of the increased risk for liver damage, which is already a concern with methotrexate. In fact, a study published online May 28, 2018, by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that the four most commonly used supplements — multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium, and vitamin C — did not protect against cardiovascular disease. Kelp: No, but don’t take it in supplement form.

People with thyroid issues should not have more than an average daily recommended intake of 158.

Other potentially very important adjuncts to omega-3 fatty acid supplementation include vitamin E, CoQ10 (when affordable), and selenium, which, in addition to vitamin D, protect these highly polyunsaturated oils from breaking down and going rancid.

  • great video as always Merijn! I personally like the most whey protein and creatine powder, but since i went to college i started using omega 3 and daily vitamins because my diet is not on point anymore and i dont have wide variety of food in my diet soo i think its necessary to suplement, and ofcours all suplements i use are from myprotein because u get the most for your buck

  • A single Vitamin never works. The magic is in the synergy of Vitamins and Minerals. Do not study or research by taking a single vitamin or mineral to check its results. This is not a pharma drug to take individually and test. This is vitamins and minerals and are true gift from nature. They work together.

Try to eat as healthy food as possible (organic). If you feel that something is missing from your diet, try to take high quality organic complex nutrition supplement. It”s as simple as that. You are the only one who can understand about your body very well. Period!

  • basically america needs to be destroyed including any other 1st wordl tbh. most anyways. they’re all liars. they lied to charles manson, he knew it, and he couldn’t help who he was. and they didn’t care.
    mass confusion
every corporation lies and nobody cares. its fucking sad. 1984 STAY WOKE

  • Creatine Monohydrate.. i’m roughly the same size as Rob Lipsett, therefore i find that Creatine helps improve size, strength, and stimulate muscle growth easier being a naturally smaller guy!

  • Look at the dislikes on this video lol. All these idiots who subscribe to that Alpha M guy who constantly shoves useless products on viewers like multi vitamins can’t handle the truth. It gives you expensive piss nothing else.

  • This video is so incredibly naive,
    of the tremendous benefits of
    vitamins, minerals, & herbs that
I don’t want to stop you from
living in fantasy land. Big money
is being spent so your doctor
    and pharmaceutical industry
    can control this billion dollar
industry. First, they tell you #1
    They don’t work. Second lie
    they hope you’ll swallow is
#2 You could get hurt & die.
I am so happy that I chose
to be healthy by taking health
    supplements. It has made all
    the difference in the world.
    Nobel prizes are handed out
to Linus Pauling and Dr. Louis
    Ignarro. Take a prescription
drug & you could get a side
    effect. Take too much vitamin
B & you have expensive urine.
    After almost 65 years of
    experience, I know the
    wonderful benefits. Nobody
    complains about drug and
    alcohol and cigarettes when
    almost everyone knows you
take them at your own risk
    &/or peril.

  • The thing with mass gainer is:
Not all mass gainers are sugar sugar some of em have good quality carbs just pick the right one
2 yes home made gainers are better but that the trick HOME made..it hard to make a home gainer at work but it easy to shake a mass gainer with water and drink it

  • All I take is just 1 scoop of whey protein in water with a bit of fresh fruit blended in, right before lifting. The main takeaway is to eat like normal while adding what you need in supplementation (because the word supplement literally means to complete, not to replace).

  • If FDA doesn’t check quality, then why not take ones that undergone quality control certification. Get those any of these labels: NSF, GMP, or USP.
    https://youtu.be/wkuI_5I9KCs
And take the natural kind, not synthetic ones.

  • It is almost impossible in Today’s diet to consume certain types of vital nutrition up to optimal doses unless you eat crazy amounts. Therefore supplementation is almost necessary. This video is ridiculous, sorry.

  • I follow your advices and only use protein shakes and fasting. Training hard and dont miss a day. Hell i feel so pretty good almost i dont use pre because im pretty full of energy eating vegies and protein rich food and some nice healthy fruits

  • Go Natural!

If you take them Make sure you Read and Research the Ingredients!

    Make sure they are Natural!

Stay away from cheap crap sold in Walmart, CVS, Kroger Etc, that will poison you, theirs a reason It’s Cheap!

  • I am addicted to supplements because over here where I stay all the vegatables and fruits are pesticide laden which is quite a headache. Availability of organic stuff is nil. Have to spend a considerable sum on supplements. Have to sacrifice for these supplements cause health is wealth

  • Everything involving food and nutrition is always a reason for debates, try and enter any nutricionist group and you will see everyday a new thing that is bad to eat thay yesterday was being praised, there is no easy answer in the end, and the best thing you can do is to have the best diet you could possibly make, even fruits nutricionists shy away if you eat like too much, try just to eat properly, wanna go to the gym right after lunch? Avoid brown rice, wanna go before lunch but at the same time dont wanna eat like crazy? Try a banana, don like bananas? Use slow carb suplement, it all depends on so many situations that in the end of day only experience will say what, how and what to use/eat

  • Been taking Coq10 and Fish oil Omega-3 for a few years now. It may have saved my life. Brought my cholesterol down from 235 to 160. Hey, some stuff does the job. I take a daily vitamin once in a while and do notice extra pep.

  • Creatine only, because it has the most impact for me personally, maybe ill add some vitamines and stuff but for now im pretty solid with creatine. Keep up the good content bro

  • Well, all the available vegetables and fruits are pesticide laden and so we have no other option than to rely heavily on ( presently available supplements here AMWAY) supplements and then since we occupy small apartments where the option of roof top gardening is completely impossible, we are hooked on these supplenents. Infact, would you believe that one of us invested Rupees Twenty five LAKHS during a period of four years on supplements. I think quite unknowingly we are addicted to these supplements. Another problem poses us when we consult the Doctor, who will prescribe an array of huge lab. Investigations etc., etc., without enquiring about our food, exercise, life-style. The Doctors rely solely on the investigatons’ reports and then keep on writing a ton of medicines. It is indeed very problematic for us the common man Where to go What to doWe the teetotallers are experiencing heartbreaking times. I feel very strongly that the best possible solution to my problem is to get down on my knees and pray fervently to my Heavenly Father to grant me the wisdom and knowledge in the right usage of these edible items.

  • Not sure that people recognize that the FDA only does as much as congress allows them to. Congress tied the FDA’s hands behind their backs with the Proxmire Amendment of 1976 and DSHEA of 1994.

  • If supplements could pose a hazard to our health, wouldn’t it require immediate attention from the FDA? As a governing body it strikes me kinda odd that the supplement industry have been booming for decades without federal scrutiny.

  • Whey protein is number one for me, a good shake before bed helps keep the cravings in check. Then creatine and a bit of pre-workout (if I need it, but try and keep it limited). Keeping it natty. Thanks Merijn!!

  • I agree. I think keeping our organs functioning properly by eating healthy foods is what will increase gains, far more than supplements.

  • Meta-analysis shows that those that supplemented with higher.amounts of vitamin c had lower levels of PANCREATIC CANCER… do your research this video is REALLY BAD worst crap I’ve viewed on YT… here’s my recommendations check out ALAN GABY MD he spent 30 years writing just one book filled with citations on supplements it’s called nutritional medicine it’s used in some medical schools another GOOD ONE is from ALEX VASQUEZ ND DC DO a triple doctorate that has thick 400pg textbook that he keeps updating and is used in medical school and it’s filled with HIGH QUALITY EVIDENCE I’m sharing i read it’s SO GOOD you’ll see how bad this video is ^ actually it’s misleading.. and isolates the evidence and and avoids presenting truth in light of the fact that there’s scores and scores of evidence… when you see it and then you see someone say this stuff it honestly builds up frustration that so many People need help and they end up discarding things that change LAB NUMBERS AND pt are able to see and feel diferent.. it’s sad and at the same time it just pushes me even more like others to really change peoples lives!

Pt with losses 30 pounds.. heavy drinker without going to the dr I went over his symptoms suspected high blood sugar took him literally took him to the lab to get labs done.. got his numbers BOOM!! A1c 12% I said you gota do something NOW decide.. he said I’ll go for NATUROPATHY. I said ok gave him targeted supplements and he’s normal now.. weigh has gone back to normal his jaundice sclera cleared out he’s looking better I still encouraged him to go to his MD but he prefers to see a Naturopath so I’m there to assist his needs

  • If you live in someplace that’s rainy or has long dark winters, vitamin d pills are a must. Even doctors recommend them to avoid vitamin d deficiency.

  • The Mass gainer from biotech USA is in my opinion great. It’s sugar free. I’ve used it and recommended it to my friend who needed it and saw allot of results in about 5 months. Other than that I agree with you

  • Now I have a migraine headache caused by nutritional supplements, and now I’m in the hospital I am treating a migraine and I almost had paraplegia

  • correction. dont take SYNTHETIC multis. Now we have this stuff called “food based” multi vitamins. they are bio available to the body and are perfectly safe and beneficial.

  • I’m not trying to lose weight or gain. I go to the gym quite regularly and probably have a BMI of 15-20% I look toned and lean but not where my abs are showing. I plan on combining CLA with quadracarn to kinda eat that last layer of fat away. I’ll probably invest in some sort of protein powder and creatine and maybe something else to keep the other supplements from eating my muscles too and not just the fat cells. Gonna try it for a month, my supplements arrive in the mail tomorrow. I’ll try to keep this advice in mind, but will also try to make an update after a month to see what progress I’ve made

  • Oct 17 2012. Journal of the American medical association. 15,000 male physicians followed for 11 years. Those who took multivitamin had 8% reduction in number of cancers they developed.

  • HUGE fucking respect for Merijn for saying you dont need BCAAs and only mentioning the essentials, huge respect man. This industry is so manipulative we need more people like this to reveal the truth

  • SUPPLEMENTS THAT I USE
    Creatine Monohydrate (Raspberry Lemonade) MyProtein
Impact Whey Protein (Chocolate Brownie) MyProtein
    BCAA (Lemon Lime) MyProtein
    Maltodextrin MyProtein

  • Absolutely wrong about supplements. Even the Doctor is wrong.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwhaexPx2n4&index=41&list=LL8W7THuOjd-0XCBDTMGFjdg

  • I stick with plenty of supplements from working out burning off calories, eatting plenty of protein and increasing a minoral of muscle, speed resistance plus i cordially train a hell of a lot for my work ambitions while working jobs. But i ain’t on no diet cause my healty is super 100% pefectly healthier according to what my doctors said…i’m at the right average shape that I’m suppose to be.

  • I loves the Supplement Made by Natures Brands Phyto vitamins series,Those all are organically made with real fruits and Vegetables and veggie capsules as well all are non GMO,Completely chemical Free.
I absolutely recommend their Supplements. This is the company is also a pioneering Organic health and Wellness products in USA since 1995

  • Testosterone boosters if they have the right formula, and gainers if not just full of plain sugar or worse (dextrose etc) are a must. In fact if you are on the go and need lots of food decent gainers is the only way.

  • dont agree with your statements on multivitamins you are conflicting towards many other research studies, and please provide your studies as well jeez

  • Multivitamins from my understanding are not to replace but “SUPPLEMENT”, be an addition to other natural sources, that is what ALL of these things are, addition not to replace.

  • Supplements do not replace real food. I am sceptical of Creatine. I know the research says it is effective. The way people explain how it works doesn’t sound right.

  • I dont understand the problem with Mass Gainers
I use a Mass Gainer with 24g whey Protein 70g carbs and 30g sugar

I know 30g sugar is very much for 1 drink
But i thought that is useful for after-workout

  • WRX Luke doesn’t approve of this informational meeting the maker baker of jive in a hive mind you not the single turboed WRX/STI does NOT have an eye on the meat beat beat my meat and delete Sonic to deliver this to Ugandan Knuckles and have Knuckles deliver the liver that has not been delivered to Bernie Sanders……………………………………………………………………………

  • So, basically, avoid those bogus “cure-all” multi vits and eat a healthy diet like a normal human. The supplements are just meant to help with any imbalances in your system, should only be consumed if your doctor advises you need a bit more of a particulat nutrient.

  • While I agree the amount of sugars in mass gainer are high. Arnt the amount of natural sugar near the same range once tallied?

Also. Mass gainers DO in fact work. Specially for people who need that quick and easy mix and dont have a blender or bullet on hand. I’ve gained 25 pounds with no real fat.

I do want to try lowering sugar intake from the 18g per serving though

  • I think overtaking vitamins while pregnant is what promotes autism. Get a blood test done and only take vitamins if it showd you need it.

  • Every since subscribing to your videos I don’t buy anything but My protein! Love their stuff. Just wish that had as much in US than they do in UK.

  • In my opinion:
    1. Creatine (the creapure from MyProtein is a very good product)
    2. Omega 3 (or fish oil)
    3. A good multivitamin (from you local pharmacy, it isn’t necessary to buy it from a brand that sells bodybuilding supplements).

  • Supplements are fine to take in order to boost the intake of certain compounds, like zinc, magnesium, potassium, copper, b vitamins etc. They are not designed to replace a healthy diet, which is even conveniently written on the labels of vitamin supplements. Stop eating processed crap junk at Mcdonalds etc and start eating proper whole foods and maybe you won’t have any nutrient deficiency.

  • all studys are bullshit. that’s for starters. show me ANY STUDY for anything people, and i will PROVE to you that it did not prove anything. STAY WOKE. AGE OF MASS CONFUSION. 1984. STAY WOKE.

  • this video lacks facts badly and shouldn’t we all want to know what companies are selling fake supplements and vitamins? im sure many sit on Walmart walgreens krogers shelfs as we speak. naïve ignorant and apathetic sum up the people of this earth very nicely. not to mention that some vitiamin companies are choosing to use harmfull additives when theres less harmfull additives that are just as cheap. so why are they choosing to use harmfull additives??

  • What are all testosterone booster supplements..? Could u plz gv me some examples..
Am using C4 as my preworkout drink…is that OK drinking c4?

  • its proven that vitamins and minerals in pill form are working, go check ppls whos researching this for living like Dr Rhoda Patrick

  • He is way off on the vitamins because I’m a diabetic and have a good diet with my training. However I would crap every night until I started taking a multi vitamin. So your comments on it are false

  • You should make a exemption for Vitamin D. This stuff is not being produced by sunlight from oct to april if you live even a bit north of italy.
This substance is so important, in the long run it lowers mortality overall by 11%. three fourth of ppl in germany have low levels.
I was tested to 12 units per ml blood when the number should be at LEAST 25. Newer studies recommend about 75 and toxicity only starts to kick in at about 140.

  • This is really interesting, the video shows a doctor which I suppose, has more knowledge on the subject than most of us, and here below comments you can still see people the are not happy with what she said, many still prefer to believe the snake oil salesmen that gives them the “magic potion”.
And for those that say “this video is not really scientific or complete” i just want to note that this is “JUST A YOUTUBE VIDEO” if one wants to know more you go and read scientific papers starting maybe with something as easy as Wikipedia where you will learn first of al how difficult it is to prove scientifically those marketing bullshit claims and you also could learn to differentiate the language of scientist from that of a snake oil salesmen

  • But almost fruits and vegetables now are not healthy because of chemicals they put to grow the fruit much bigger or to make it more tastier so we do need multivitamins.

  • I personally use supplements. The main supplement that I use is definitely whey protein. It is hard for me to get enough protein throughout the day so I have to use whey protein as a supplement to help me meet my daily recommended protein intake. As protein itself is always being formed and broken down in the body, I think it is important to have enough protein so that they can be further broken down into amino acids to be used in muscle protein synthesis and for other cellular functions.

  • Mashable fear mongering. You would think if the supplement industry is a $122 billion industry and unregulated by the FDA, there would be millions upon millions of people contaminating themselves with unregulated supplements…but theirs not. People are fine

  • You got it wrong on multivitamins. Even organic soil doesn’t have the nutrients it did thousands of years ago. The only people who wouldn’t benefit from multivitamins are people who lived thousands of years ago. I learned this from Dr. Peter Glidden. A high quality food based multivitamin is one of the few supplements every one should be on.

  • Instead of a pre-workout, I “make my own”. I use some Iso-drink-maker-thingy, which tastes like Lemon and has some caffeine in it. I mix in some Beta Alanine, some L-Arginine and most of the time also my 5grams of Creatine (because it doesn’t matter when you take creatine, just to take 5g a day). I also take MSM and for me it works, might be complete placebo, studies show different results. I also take L-Taurine pills (probably complete bullshit/placebo, but hey, makes me feel good), because some studies have shown that it helps bloodflow.

I’ve noticed that taking pre-made pre-workouts gave me tóó much of a boost and this is more mellow and easier to sleep on.
Please note: I work out @9pm every evening.

  • I take only Creatine and mass gainer, I have seen increases in muscle mass almost a few days after starting, increase in energy levels, in libido and in weightlifting, also mass gainer has given me an extra boost in energy but it does taste very sugary I dont have access to food all the time so I use mass gainer on the go.

  • HerniCalm Homeopathic Home Care Remedy. Live Life with Better Digestion, Stronger Muscles, Better Sleep, and Less Ailments. Natural Herbs Supplement. Contains Turmeric, Chia, Pygeum, Etc. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z27Q47B?ref=myi_title_dp

  • Impact Whey Protein is the number 1 go to. It itself contains all the necessary amino acids so we do not have to buy more such as BCAAs

  • Creatine is my favorite, it increase your strength. I use BCAA sometimes when I’m doing sports eg playing basketball just cause it has some electrolytes in there and I cramp less now

  • You definitely need supplements, no matter how well you eat. Food is becoming more And more depleted of nutrients. And you can actually determine if a supplement has been tested by a third party, by calling the company that makes the supplement(number is on the label) and ask if they can give you a “certificate of analysis” if they can’t, don’t buy it

  • Yes! This is absoutly true. There isn’t a strict check on the supplement industry! That being said, My family and I take Nutrilite Vitamins as they are made from cerfined organic farms and are tested by the NSF. I stand by them. Secondly, I love how the doctor happily advised to eat actual food to fill the nutritional gap BUT this guy and the doctor DID NOT point out the kind of fruits and veg and meat we get in the market! Food that is injected with steroids, hormones and other chemicals! Food in the today’s markets DON’T contain the nutirtion they once used to! That is why there is a nutritional gap PEOPLE!!! unless u can aford to go ORGANIC all the way, u won’t feel your best! I love taking double x and other vitamins cuz they smell like your garden and made form CERTIFIED ORGANIC FARMS!! My family’s physicals come out clean by the grace of God! and I believe
Nutrilite supplements have a big hand in keep us healthy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1v-pwKrotw&index=1&t=0s&list=PL4HOqmzBleJWTu79zMrGZCiMsXd4hdLPT

  • What a joke of a video. Vitamins are essential for a healthy body and strong immune system especially with this corona virus going around. Also, I’d much rather Listen to doctors and know what they’re talking about status on YouTube or do things it’s all a scam and some physicians assistant I think you can supplement by just eating food do you realize you have to consume large amounts of food to get the recommended this or that. Also, high levels of zinc, C, D, and A will boost your immune system. How about you do some basic reading on zinc and how it inhibits a virus ability to attach to a cell or how vitamin D and A help your cells create a thicker Wall, helping prevent viruses from easily attaching to the cell.

  • I don’t get why chicks love that vitamin shit. Next time you’re in a vitamin store ask for pure caffeine (not that fake ass guarana shit). I guarantee they won’t have any. Entire Isles dedicated to energy supplements that don’t actually work and not one bottle of pure caffeine tablets. Why? Because it’s dirt cheap and actually works… you pop two 100mg pills of pure caffeine in the morning with some orange juice and you’re unstoppable the rest of the day. Vitamins are a complete fucking scam. If you wanna get sick less keep your testosterone high.

  • Balanced diets give you only 80% of the vitamins you need. So you need supplements. But please don’t take vitamin E with other vitamins. It blocks the absorptions of other nutrients.

  • I honestly really like Optimum Nutritions protein powder. Use it myself, and i’ve tested lots of brands. I’m lactose sensetive, and ON’s protein is really nice towards my stomach. Also, the shakes don’t turn out thick and like a milkshake, more like thinner chocolate milk if you have the Double Rich Chocolate flavor:) (edit: i also do two scoops per shake (about 49g of protein, and they still turn out non thick)

  • supplements do NOT work biggest scam ever…. ive tried multiple different types for various purposes and not even one worked. ever. i am a sucker for falling for this scam

  • This pretty much covers what I’d recommend. Another supplement I highly recommend is a good quality fruits & greens powder as most of the people eat too little of them.

  • I am a little confused. Around 3:00, she said that there is little to no oversight or investigation into some supplements “until something goes wrong.” yet you followed it up with saying that she “absolutely” recommends that some patients with colitis, menopause and other issues take supplements. Then, she recommends that people look to other sources like sunlight, orange juice and yogurt. Get back to the thing about recommending something to patients even though there is little to no data in some cases that would backup your recommendation. Wearing that coat, people are going to you as the person with the knowledge to make decisions, so they don’t have to. It feels like she is throwing menu recommendations out without knowing anything about the people eating the food.

  • Multivitamin because it’s hard to get all the micros in through food for me,
Creatine helped me alot with strength, muscles feel fuller and rounder

  • Favorite supp is protein cause I like to make shakes with it. I add pb, cereal and light chocolate syrup. Also because I have problems hitting my protein.

  • I use peanut butter as a mass gainer. 1 jar is over 2000 cal. Its really cheap. And when you blend it in with milk it goes down real easy. Its nothing to cram down a 2500 cal shake. Its hard to get 4k cal in a day or more. This helps a lot!

  • Using Whey protein and BCAA’s to help me keep my strength while cutting during my wrestling season. My two favorite flavors are chocolate and cookies and cream!:)

  • Love the myprotein citruline malate if you’re eating enough carbs it gives you a great pump and extra endurance during your workout

  • Fuck people are so brainwashed, taking multiple supplements a day, eat a balanced plant based diet and you won’t need supplements because you are eating everything straight from the source with the antioxidants, fiber and polyphenols as well.

The western diet is why the supplement industry is so big, nobody needed supplements in the past because people ate a mostly plant based diet, eating all the colours and types of the plant kingdom which give you everything you need in large quantities, but these days everybody eats meat, dairy and eggs for every meal with little or no plants which promote disease and don’t give you the necessary vitamins and mineral the body needs instead of eating a mixture of plants.

There are 90 vitamins and minerals the body needs and animal products contain very little of these, hence why millions get sick from deficiencies and die from eating them. Animal products cause 13/15 of the leading causes of death on the planet, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke being at the top. Eating these animal products causes these problems and on top don’t give you the necessary vitamins and minerals the body needs anyway.
