How to Calculate Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

Video taken from the channel: OPEX Fitness

Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimation of how many calories you burn per day when exercise is taken into account. It is calculated by first figuring out your Basal Metabolic Rate, then multiplying that value by an activity multiplier. Since your BMR represents how many calories your body burns when at rest, it is necessary to adjust the numbers upwards to account for the calories. This calculator estimate the Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) of a person based on their age, physical characteristics, and activity level.

It also provides simple food energy intake guidelines for either losing or gaining weight. Also explore many other free calculators. Total Daily Energy Expenditure Calculator Managing your weight and lean muscle mass is extremely challenging, especially if you are a beginner who’s just about to join the fields of fitness and nutrition. By using our Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) Calculator you can find the estimated calories you burn per day.

TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure and it is a measure of how much energy (in kCal, kilocalories) you expend during your day and this is exactly what our TDEE calculator helps you estimate. There are three main things that affect it: physical activity, dietary-induced thermogenesis, and the climate you spend your day in. Total Daily Energy Expenditure Calculator (Metric) Your sex * Male/Female.

Age * Use age in years. Weight * Use kilograms. Height * Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) Your TDEE is an estimate of the total calories burned during a single day, when exercise is factored in. The above should give a fairly accurate calorie number for reaching your goal, but to get a most accurate Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), get your body composition tested and enter your stats in the “body fat percentage” field. Please seek the help of medical & nutritional professionals before drastically altering your exercise or diet.

Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) refers to the total amount of energy you burn each day. There are a number of factors which influence your TDEE, including: Basal metabolic rate (BMR) Thermic effect of activity (TEA) Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) Thermic effect of food (TEF). TDEE your Total Daily Energy Expenditure is an estimation of how many calories you burn per day when exercise is taken into account. It is calculated by first figuring out your Basal Metabolic Rate, then multiplying that value by an activity multiplier. Your TDEE is how many calories you expend every day.

Calculate Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure! Mifflin St. Jeor equation Men: 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) 5 x age.

The Harris Benedict Equation is a formula that uses your BMR and then applies an activity factor to determine your total daily energy expenditure (calories). How to determine the Harris-Benedict equation? To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR by the appropriate activity factor, as follow.

  • Do we estimate caloric deficit or surplus by subtracting from or adding to the TDEE? With that being said, the TDEE would be maintenance of bodyweight (muscle mass and fat%) as long as the workout intensity and frequency is sustained, correct?

  • Would be nice to tell viewers how to accurately calculate bmr via a simple math problem. That’s easily done in a couple ways that give an accurate enough estimate to be functional and here is one way: body weight in lbs. (140 for me) with a zero added to the 1’s column (so, 1400 for me) + 2x your weight (gives 280 for me). So, 1400 + 280 = 1680 and the 1680 therefore is my approximate BMR. Reasonably accurate Doc? Hope you don’t mine my volunteering this.

  • wait wait wait wait wait….. so your saying if I eat 330 cals every meal I can still have a snack of up to 200 cals? lol i need to stop drinking soda and beer I thought 140 cals was small smh

  • If I stand / walk around for 80% of my work days, and brisk walk every morning 1hr, should I be the 3rd or 4th highest activity level? I calculated mine on “moderate” and the figure it gave me would increase my weight.

  • I have allergies on many foods and It is hard for me to find a diet that doesn’t include particular foods. Then my friend sent me link to the website called Next Level Diet where I can get personalized meal plan only with food I select. My fitness journey has just started, what about you?

  • I need some advice!
I’m trying to lose some weight, and I’d like to calculate my caloric deficit to do it, but I’m struggling with calculating my ACTIVITY FACTOR!
I used to be a student and doing just home and studies activities, then I’ve started to exercise 25 days ago (5 or 6 times a week for at least half an hour; I do especially some HIIT or some jogging and some workout for muscles like abs, glutes, legs, depending on the day).
Anyway, except for that and for a more healty diet, my lifestyle is pretty still the same! SO: when calculating my activity factor, should I consider 1.375 as a value (light to moderate exercise)?
    Thanks a lot!!!

  • I eat everything i can. LITERALLY anything and i have been at 90 kilo’s for the last 3 years standing at 6’5 and 19 years old my metabolism is way to high so if i not eat enoigh i will lose wieght its that bad

  • Apparently I am meant to be on 1216.75 calories for maintenance. That’s ridiculous.

Doctors warn people to eat a lot more than that so they don’t die.

  • that was very helpful!!!!!! I can’t find the calculator like AdulHakk Assami. I love you soooo much Dr. Liz Lane!!!! You really helped me understand what the BMR means!!!! thank you soooooooooooooo much!!!

  • thanks for the video…short & sweet! Nonetheless, your link does not work so i used this one for anyone who needs it….. https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bmr_calculator.htm

  • Since up to * 75% * is due to BMR and that is a result of BODY MASS, this explains why people that are rather obese can easily lose large amounts in a short amount of time. Someone that is 140 lbs can’t lose 40 in a month, but someone who has had bariatric surgery can.

  • There are three components to fat loss exercise, diet, and motivation. One plan I found which succeeds in merging these is the Lakan food tactic (check it out on google) without a doubt the most helpful diet i’ve heard of. look at all the before and after photos and awesome testimonials.

I don’t quite understand how much I should be eating and how much I should be losing? should I eat around 700 calories and sport and lose about 1200 calories? I lose 400 calories in an hour on the threadmill, does this means I need to sport more then 4 hours?

  • Just sad this video and I have some questions. First is who came up with the.9 for females and 1 for males? And also how accurate is this estimate due to your guessing the active percent to put into the formula?

  • but if you multiply 1 in case of thermic effect of food then this thermic effect don’t make a sense but in books and articles mention 10% of your total calories is thermic effect of food

  • Since up to * 75% * is due to BMR and that is a result of BODY MASS, this explains why people that are rather obese can easily lose large amounts in a short amount of time. Someone that is 140 lbs can’t lose 40 in a month, but someone who has had bariatric surgery can.

  • Anthony-thank you for this video. I was wondering what were your thoughts on these activity monitors (like fit Bit)? Do you believe they’re accurate? If so, to what degree? How do you perceive the pros and cons of these devices? Thank you again.

  • I understand your explanation of TDEE, however, I never know or not sure what activity level to pick in the calculators. What activity would a person who lifts weights and walks for 30min 3-4 times a week but is otherwise not active a.k.a. computer job all day, pick?

  • i work out 6 days/week mainly lifting, and i end each workout with 20 minutes fast paced walking (almost jogging). does that put me in the “moderate exercise” category? i also have a very physically active job, incase that should be considered aswell.

  • I LOST 40lbs!!! You ask how? I visited website called NextLevelDiet. I selected only food I like and they provided me with DIET MEAL PLAN, TRAINING PLAN, FITNESS TIPS and HEALTHY RECIPES.

  • Very inaccurate. I’m using the TDEE calc on IIFYM’s homepage and it fits me alot better. Should be eating 3100 calories to maintain when using your calc, even tho my TDEE is 2600.

  • No metric system toggle? Tsk.
I’ll browse for the conversions but still, would’ve been nice to have the option.
You’ve got fans in Europe too. Greets.

  • I’m in the same boat as a lot of people. My TDEE (based on the calculator) is what I would eat if I wanted to cut. Come to think of it though, I’m constantly standing up at my job, and I’ve read that over periods of several hours the difference in calories burned standing vs sitting down is actually quite large.

  • If I got do weight training exactly 3 days a week (full body weight training) but sit on my ass rest of the week, do I got 1-3 on it or 3_5?

  • Im 17 y/o 196lbs 6 feet male. I picked moderate exercise since i weight train 4-5 times a week. It says I should eat 3026kcal but im not losing weight at 2000kcal, what should i do? Maybe i weigh the chicken wrong?

  • Not very accurate for me, but I have a medical condition that increases my metabolism a lot. It calculates me at 2700 calories, but I lose 1-2 lbs a week if I eat that little.

  • this TDEE seems to give much closer numbers than most I’ve used. I pretty much known my expenditure and bulk/cut numbers from experience and this calculator actually wasnt too far off from actual maintenance cals, was surprised. good stuff, subbed to rich homie
