The Keto Diet and Exercise for Weight Loss “Steve, I’m not a competition-level ANYTHING, but I like exercising and want to look good.” While dietary changes make up at least 80% of your weight-loss efforts, exercise will help you stay healthy and build a. At its core, the keto diet is a low-carb diet. This means staying away from grains, sugar, fruit, and tubers (potatoes and yams). It’s a very fat-centric diet, with an intake of around seventy percent fats, twenty-five percent proteins, and five percent carbs.

People who eat this diet aim to induce a state known as “ketosis”. Ketogenic Diet And Exercise Being on a highly restrictive diet such as a ketogenic diet has the benefit of weight loss, but requires severely limiting the amount of carbohydrates consumed to enable a ketosis state − this could raise a problem, carbohydrates being used by the body as a source of energy. To optimize your keto diet for fat loss while exercising: Calorie intake should be set at a level that results in steady weight loss. Weight loss of 0.5 to 1% per week is typically recommended to maximize muscle retention.

Cut down on fat consumption to achieve a caloric deficit of 250-500 calories. The Ketogenic diet, or Keto diet, is a food strategy in which you drastically reduce your carbohydrate intake and replace it with fat in order to get your metabolism to a state called ketosis. In ketosis, your body converts fat to fuel to burn for energy like Tony Stark burns Captain America for.

How to Use a Targeted Ketogenic Diet for Exercise While on the standard keto diet (SKD) you’d be sticking to 20-50 grams of net carbs per day, on a targeted ketogenic diet (TKD) these net carbs would have to be taken 30 minutes to one hour before high-intensity activities. If you are following aerobic exercises such as running or biking, a keto diet can help increase fat oxidation, spare glycogen, produce less lactate and use less oxygen.” In other words, that could translate into more fat burned during aerobic exercise. “However, it probably won’t enhance performance,” he adds. You really need to eat enough fat. The ketogenic diet (or keto diet, for short) is a low-carb, high-fat diet that offers many health benefits. In fact, over 20 studies show that this type of diet can help you lose weight and.

  • According to the medical doctors of Plant Based News, the weight loss from a ketogenic diet is short term. I am vegan for health reasons as a whole food plant based diet can reverse diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. I have gained about 70 pounds from taking Seroquel for schizoaffective disorder. My current psychiatrist is tapering me off from Seroquel and adding Lamotrigine. Does Lamotrigine cause weight gain?? I have lost inches and weight from consuming a whole food plant based vegan diet. Go Vegan!!!

  • All mental health problems are caused by severe calcium deficiency. This begins in the womb or in infancy. The human body can assimilate calcium only from fresh, natural, uncooked foods especially leafy greens and grasses, wheatgrass. Artificial supplements do not work. The best way to get the calcium from greens is through green smoothies.

Brain chemical imbalances have never been proved.

One of the reasons why mental health problems generally develop or manifest in late adolescence is because of the body’s need for tremendous amounts of calcium due to the sudden spurt in physical growth.

Calcium is needed for proper neurotransmitter function.

It is also important to minimise chronic cellular inflammation by avoiding white sugar, refined carbs and oils and fats that increase cellular inflammation.

Cellular inflammation prevents the absorption of nutrients vitamins and minerals.

  • Hello Dr.Tracey I’m having a serious anxiety problem.I could not sleep due to racing thoughts or just can’t sleep at all.Can you help me out a lil bit pliz…..

  • wow very interesting. i love that our society is starting to look at other approaches to treat mental illness instead of relying so heavily on JUST pharmaceuticals. gonna look more into this thanks for keeping us updated doc!

  • I have no idea how much a gram is. Would you please explain that? Thank you so much. I just found your channel and subscribed immediately.

  • how does keto affect folks that have had issues in the past from fats and heart stents from clogged atreies?? fat is always the culprit! will keto add to this or help clear the arteries??

  • what’s with all these authoritarians telling people how to sit? isn’t the correct way to sit the way that’s most comfortable and easiest to hold good spine posture. I didn’t realise the way my limbs fell wile resting my body on a chair was so distracting to people. she’s a hand folder. oh dear Lord she’s a hand folder. man the way she folds her hands is so distracting. man I wish she could keep her privlidge in check by not folding her hands. wow what a disgusting display of femininity she has put on by folding her hands. it’s so goofy where people chose to place meaning

  • > The ketogenic diet and the Mediterranean diet couldn’t be more different.
Actually, there is a substantial similarity between the ModiMedDiet and a long-term-sustainable ketogenic diet, and this common ground is potentially more interesting than the ketosis aspect for depression, etc. (except schizophrenia’s neuron metabolism problem ketosis is definitely still very relevant there)
Both diets have higher-than-average fat content, a focus on oils, salad greens and dietary fibre from fresh vegetables, and an avoidance of high-glycemic-index carbohydrates. Fat increases satiation from food, removing high-GI carbs reduces impulsive cravings, and increasing fibre ensures regular bowel movements.
Together, these changes minimize the stress that our eating causes on the body, so it’s no wonder many people see significant improvements from these diets.

  • Most of us need to resolve to the fact that due to metabolic syndrome we just can’t handle too many carbs.
The exact amount will differ from person to person. Get over it. Good health and feeling well is so worth the low carb life style.
Getting rid of all the belly fat feels so good.

  • If the keto diet was proven to work, i wonder how it could be applied in the real world. People with schizophrenia often live in very deprived circumstances, homeless and in poverty. They may have very limited access to the right types of food. This would be one of the challenges facing front line health care workers. Unfortunately, there are seldom easy answers to these types of complex problems.

  • I’ve been trying it and I don’t have schizophrenia but it definitely something about it has a calming effect I guess? Idk I actually don’t enjoy it all that much taste wise but I feel toned down or run down which sounds shitty but it’s sort of relaxing

  • Rhonda, you know that D’Agostino is member of THINCS the cholesterol deniers’ sect, right? I thought you were into science and not into pseudo-scientific sectarians.

  • I’m at my goal weight after doing the Keto diet. How do I maintain my weight now? Do I bring myself out of a calorie deficit while maintaining my Keto macros? I want to stick with Keto for the long run.

  • Nutritional keto is very high fat, low protein, regular keto can be high protein. Ketosis simply occurs from lack of carbs, it’s very possible to be in ketosis on a high protein, low carb diet.

  • The only diet that increased a lot my triglycerides and LDL cholesterol was the vegan wfpb starch and fruit diet with zero fats added. What a mess for my blood, almost worse than a standard casual diet

  • Dr Marks I appreciate your videos and will add that Ketogenic diet is helpful because it appears to feed the body the nutrients in an order that calms the body. the diet is rich in nutrients and is low in sugars, starches, fats, and sodium. I am trying to test my will and only eat thid diet for 90 days and see what other healthy changes occur in my body.

  • I increase my carbs usually for one reason to get in adequate potassium and magnesium. Still tweaking my intake but I can usually fit it all in within 30g carbs. My heart races if I don’t get a certain amount of K & Mg. Everything else takes care of itself. Cals, fat, protein, etc. Too much protein kicks me out of keto and I can feel it so I just know how much protein my body likes for keto and it seems much less than others. It’s one big experiment haha but so great. I rarely have cravings, no migraines, energetic, and burning fat.: ) Love keto!
Thanks Doc for all your help.

  • You can’t not eat anything. While for sure this is true, the longer I fast the better I feel. I don’t know how long I could go and have no intentions to find out. The fact is, for me, fasting and a keto diet have helped make me feel better than I have in years. Must be something to it. There is no question in my case.

Hello dr. Westman I know you’re not a big believer of macros but I’ve recently switched mine and increased my protein to about a hundred grams a day and lowered my fat grams to about 75-80 and I see a very big Improvement in weight loss also I’m much Fuller. ‫ I used to do the opposite at least 100 grams of fat and only 70-80 protein whats your take on the new science of the muscle protein synthesis with the importance of retaining muscle while losing weight

Hi, Dr Setven Phenny talks about 50 grams a day, what do you think?

    Renee 5:29
I want to know, too. I’ll put an additional question about the number of carbs if you are working out I am doing one hour six days a week strength training and cardio. I am not doing it to lose weight as I have been maintaining a 100+ weight loss for over a year now. I just really enjoy exercise now.

How can the keto diet help me with Psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis?

    Dave 6:59
I’ve followed this lifestyle for a year, all the bloodwork looks great, weight loss looks great. Can I use net carbs now and how do I factor that in?

  • Keto diet helps to have a healthy gut, inflammation and chronic disease as well. I was very ill without energy and a lot of pain in my body. I changed my carbohydrates diet to keto diet and I am healthy now. I wonder if It can be the best diet for humans?

  • Historical anthropological data already proves relative unimportance of fiber. Inuit, plains indians, and Maasai warriors, for example, had no fiber in their diet. They were perfectly healthy, had no historical cancer, heart disease, or stunted growth eating their traditional diets. Many people today in the zero carb community have no fiber in their meat only diet and are perfectly healthy. Fiber is overrated.

  • I have panic disorder agoraphobia and health anxiety, along with generalized anxiety disorder. I’m so stuck because I can’t fix one without the other stopping it (ex. I want to get my body checked out so I can work on stopping health anxiety, but I can’t get out of the house because of agoraphobia). And I can’t go to therapy anymore because I’m too scared to leave my house. What should I do???

  • Adapt your life. Not in the morning, it is after 15-26 hours of fasting, it is high in the morning too, the longer I don’t eat any thing the higher my sugar gets I don’t get it! Why?

  • 47:05 is written on screen,,The blood-brain barrier allows the passage of water, some gasses, and lipid-soluble molecules by passive diffusion”. Later on in the same script,,but prevents the entry of lipophilic, potential neurotoxins”. As I understand,, lipid-soluble” and,,lipophilic” are same sides of a phenomenon,,Fat solubility”. In the beginning of the script,,allows”, in the end,,prevents”. How is that?. And,,blood-brain barrier is formed by brain endothelial cells”, in the same script. Where endothelial cells of the blood vessels participating in forming this barrier either?? NRF2 IS NOT A gene, but transcription factor. Thank’s.

  • if one sticks to 20 net carbs per day, how long should it take to get into Ketosis.? And what does that look like? Should the urine test strip register in the darker colors or does “trace and small” mean you are actually in ketosis but not far enough in to lose weight?

  • Thank you for your amazing video. I love everything you are saying towards the keto lifestyle and agree with you. I am trying to live this lifestyle and am loving the way I feel!

  • The ketogenic diet should be prescribed along with exercise for anxiety and depression instead of pharmaceutical medication because it’s a game changer and changed my life no more brain fog, stress, worry struggling to sleep you just feel happy relaxed and cognitively alert but unfortunately their is no profit to big pharma in healthy people, so everyone give a go

  • That explanation for how cancer cells are created… at 1:10:15… is nice and clear. People perhaps don’t know that there are a number of ways to increase mitochondria in your cells… both size and number (at least in muscle cells, and perhaps there’s an indirect effect for creating mitochondria elsewhere). For muscles, you go high rep, light weight, continuous tension lifts (continuous tension to acquire anaerobic stress). I believe the magic bullet is 90 seconds (because Fred Hatfield in his book Scientific Bodybuilding set the rep range for targeting mitochondrial growth at 15 to 20 reps… 6 seconds per rep). Also, Basis, a product you can by from Elysium Health, is aimed at increasing NAD+… it on average increases NAD+, which we lose as we age, 40% in test subjects… NAD+ increases mitochondrial function in mice: http://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2016/04/27/science.aaf2693.full

  • I’ve been looking for the final push to go full keto.. I’m gonna start next month. Hoping this will help with my manic episodes

  • Bullshit, I’ve been on keto for years it doesn’t affect psychosis.btw your first video and crazy looking photo doesn’t help the stigma either.

  • Yay for the keto diet! I am on keto, trying to STAY on keto, because I find that it helps my depression. I have been diagnosed with bipolar 2 as well as BPD, PTSD, and anxiety.

  • MY ALS JOURNEY    I was diagnosed of ALS ( Lou Gehrig’s disease ) a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells, I was given medications to slow down the progress of the disease, after some months my conditioned worsened and i lost ability to go about my daily activities and i had to quit my job, my legs and arms were terribly weakened, i resorted to a wheelchair. This was until a friend introduced my wife to a herbal Dr. who sells herbal medicines to cure all kinds of diseases,Herpes virus, Zoster, Cold Sores, HPV including ALS. We contacted the herbal DR and purchased the ALS herbal remedy. We received the herbal medicine via DHL courier delivery service within 3 working days and commenced usage as prescribed, and within 3 weeks how the miracle happened was totally unexplained how all the symptoms gradually  disappeared, my speech was totally restored and I am able to walk a long  distance now with no support. contact this herbal DR. via his Email: [email protected]

  • It’s interesting he eats the animal based products and then eats a lot of whole food plant products to offset the damage being done by the animal products. In addition, he fasts which also aids in reducing the damage the animal products will do. So, just eat the whole food plant products that are good for you, and eliminate the animal products.

  • I am a keto athlete bodybuilder 51 years old two time national’s qualified competitor in two different divisions this diet has been revolutionary in my success in bodybuilding

  • Dr. Marks, I was wondering if you were interested in making a video about Asperger’s/ASD and how there can be overlaps with mood & personality disorders that can cause confusion/conflation and misdiagnosis. Also, keto is generally great for brain health (very beneficial for neurodegenerative diseases) and overall health. I could go on a long tangent about that, but I will refrain:)

  • Awesome! video Dr. Tracey Marks, I am Schizoaffective and I have noticed a decline in symptoms after eating foods high in vitamins B1,B6,B12 I used to take supplements and I have found that whole foods is more effective for me. Eggs,Milk,Butter,Cheese,Meats I know may be very high in fat but for me work very well with my symptoms.

  • With cancer cells all comes down to evolutionary biology

Zenger’s: One wouldn’t expect the immune system to recognize a cancer cell because it’s self.

Dr. Stefan Lanka: That’s it. We have a lot of embryonic cells in our body all over. Those are the stem cells. When the nerve cells have got broken, new nerve cells may regenerate out of the embryonic cells, because those cells cannot be regenerated. So we have embryonic tissues everywhere, and here comes evolutionary biology.

Now I have to tell you the basis of our lives. The fermentation process was not producing enough energy to form multicellular organisms or to enable the cell to differentiate. Bacterial cells are not differentiated, not able to build multicellular organisms because they don’t have enough energy. Only the invention of photosynthesis using the energy of the sun to split down matter in order to get electrons allowed life to go on. Life is driven by the force of electrons, and with photosynthesis the electrons came out of the splitting of the water, and the base product was oxygen.

This photosynthesis was so successful that it polluted the whole planet. The water, and eventually the atmosphere, became saturated with oxygen. Only when bacteria began to learn to use oxygen to produce much more energy out of organic material, out of a sugar molecule, did we have the next step in evolution. Life dealt with the oxygen catastrophe, and since then we have had a perfect equilibrium of oxygen-producing bacteria and oxygen-using bacteria, so that they keep the atmosphere at a constant level of 20 percent oxygen. This is exactly the level at which life is able to persist. At a lower level, or a higher level, it is impossible. We are living in the equilibrium. That’s the principle of Gaia, by the way.

Those bacteria which learned to use oxygen were able to produce 20 to 30 times more energy per sugar molecule, because the oxygen at the end was sucking so many electrons that many more electrons could be taken out of the sugar, to produce much more energy than was possible without the potent oxidative substance at the end of the energy-producing chain. This revolution in energy formation was the basis for all higher cells and all higher organisms. Of course, with this excess of energy, cells could eventually differentiate and form multicellular organisms. And these bacteria, which sere using the oxygen, are part of every one of our cells, called mitochondria. So very higher cell is a product of the fusion of several different kinds of bacteria: the spirochetes, which brought mobility into life; and the mitochondria, which produced much more energy than before.

This excess energy is the basis of all higher life, and if you violate it if you don’t let the oxygen come into the organism; if the blood is oxidized by poppers [nitrites] or sulfinamides [including sulfa drugs like Bactrim and Septra]; or if the transit way between the blood and the cells is poisoned by heavy metals, or the lack of essential fatty acids; or when the mitochondria are destroyed in the cells, due to the lack of nutrition, or antibiotics the oxygen cannot be transported from the blood to the cells. Then the cell is not able to produce enough energy. It either may die, resulting in inflammation; or when it’s possible for a cell to survive, it will become cancerous. When the cell is producing only fermentation, then that’s cancer, as Otto Warburg already detected in the 1940’s.

They knew from the very beginning that cancer cells have only embryonic markers on their surface. From a biological, evolutionary point of view it makes sense that a cancer cell is a reduction to an embryonic stage. It de-differentiates due to the lack of energy, and it waits until the lack of energy is over in order to differentiate again. Of course, if the lack of energy persists, it loses genetic material; and these were the old criteria to define cancer, when cells lost a lot of genetic material, because then they lost the ability to differentiate again.

Zenger’s: In other words, cancer occurs when the cell is programmed to behave like a cell very early in fetal development and just divide like crazy.

Dr. Lanka: That’s it. An embryonic cell goes into a unicellular state. It behaves like a unicellular organism, like a bacterium. It loses the ability to stop replication when coming into contact with other cells. So knowing about evolutionary biology, you are able to explain everything.

In order to explain failure to find a retrovirus that directly caused cancer, they claimed to be able to measure the immune system. But this is ridiculous. In the Journal of the American Medical Association, August 28, 1981, it was published that it makes no sense to measure lymphocytes in the blood because only a few of them are in the blood. The immune system is carried out, not in the blood, but in the tissues. Only rarely and accidentally do we see some of them in the blood. We’ve already carried out thousands of studies which have proven no correlation between disease or health, in old or young, in T-cells; and even less, of course, in T-cell subsets.

But, even though they knew that these T-cell tests had not meaning, they were selling them to the market. Beginning in 1977, starting in the United States, it was possible to patent biological entities or biological techniques, so people started to make money out of biological ideas.

This is the definite turning point when modern medicine and modern biology lost their ‘Unschuld’, their innocence. That’s it. The immune surveillance theory of cancer the belief that if you measure the strength of the immune system, then you could see when you are going to develop cancer was the basis of AIDS, the thinking about AIDS. They said if your immune functions are weak, you are going to develop all viral forms of opportunistic infections and all forms of cancer. And this never happened, as a matter of fact. In AIDS we never have seen opportunistic infections. We have never seen all viral forms of cancer; only one form of cancer, KS [Kaposi’s sarcoma].

  • Not that i hate my meds.. I hope u scientists find direct solution that ENDS mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar. I wanna know how it feels like to be in full remission:\

  • it is so very difficult to remove oneself from the past teachings that got us here, in trouble with our health. Unless I get rid of all those auto-thoughts, like when I’m cooking, to not put too much fat in the pan, or draining the fat, or not putting too much salt, as well as the one I got recently of being afraid of hunger, I will continue to struggle. I’m looking forward to alleviating all the diet stressers and it becoming natural and automatic.

  • Subscribed from this video and the one that mentions best way of getting back into keto (some form of fasting). So far LIFTing and fasting have been the most effective forms for me to improve overall health and fitness, at least for my body

  • Dr Westman, thank you for all the Q&A. My question: Is there a list of doctors by area who are knowledgeable about KETO? My GP wants me on cholesterol meds. I’d like an opinion from a KETO knowledgeable doctor but don’t want to make 10 appointments to finally find one. These videos are so informative!

  • Mrs. Doctor, your clients and listeners, and their common dilemma, do they ever speak of the mentally ill feature as feeling good? I was a youngster who was too spacey for studies, maybe some intelligent raw material, when at age 14, after sustaining some amount of injury and isolation among classmates, my outlook chose deathly ideas, it was an emotional turn not a choice, my I.Q. progress I was barely aware of and this new psychiatric item put a choice in front of my eyes, and the mentally ill side had it’s ways of easing my wounds.  sensitive intelligent youth in troubled situations may go over to the side of craziness because it provides an invigorating escape

  • Dr.Marks, first thank you for your time and energy helping those of us who need this information. I want to state that I am currently under Psychiatric care and am not asking for specific information about my treatment. I am very curious about the studies that have been conducted so far. Would hou be able to direct me to some of them so I can have a conversation with my Doctor. Thank you again, I have recommended your videos to my therapist as well as my Psychtrist as reference points for other clients of theirs.

  • Dr Atkins the originator of the Atkins diet, died an obese man with severely clogged arteries. This is really a terrible diet that begins with some good results, but ends perhaps even worse than the SAD diet that Americans are on. No real science behind this (when I say real science I mean a double blind large experiment without industry money). So no science and this guy is a professor? Mama mia che cazzo!

  • Dr Tracey, I love this! I have bipolar 1 and I’ve been psychotic once. I’m eating keto now and I’m very hopeful. I would hope the keto diet can shorten my manic episodes and make them less frequent.

  • Hi Doc, I have a question for you. Is it beneficial to continue a low carb diet when trying to increase muscle mass and to gain some weight?

  • I started doing low carb not necessarily Keto and I’ve seen sugar spikes! I’ve lost weight, about 10lbs-15lbs in a few weeks. I’m trying to find a better way to keep losing weight.

  • The videos of this channel are so educational and well made. Wouldn’t it be interesting to make a video about homosexuality and how it was treated by psychiatrists through the decades?

  • I heard an interesting fact you may already know: that the keto diet is used for some people who have epilepsy. It’s interesting to know about another use for it for a central nervous system issue. I’m thankful I have neither issues, though: whole food-plant based for life, now.:)

  • Having studied in medical school, you have enough knowledge to create fear amongst common public who did not have this benefit! However, have you ever discussed these with an expert doctor who has the benefit of medical education and in addition an excellent understanding of dietary nutrition and keto diets? My own experience is that most doctors who have cleared medical school, have great skills that include the abilities like doing very complicated neurosurgery very successfully. However, few have taken the field of diet and nutrition serious. This and other aspects of “wellness medicine” are far more a difficult, as controlled research takes several years and even newer findings are never reported to the medical community because these are considered “in-exact science”. Look at the number of doctors are obese, diabetic, suffer from all kind of health complications they have brought about on themselves, by poor management of their own life-style and health. These same doctors have great contributions prescribing medicines for their patients who have the same issues!

The first thing a person who considers a keto diet should understand is that carbs are addictive and cause frequent hunger cycles, because of the high insulin secretion and resulting high levels of insulin in the blood. This can only be addressed by training the body (and mostly the mind). So keto diets are not just about eating only fat and protein and starving the body of carbs. It is about a smooth transition from the most common diets that is very rich in carbs to one that where the carbs are reduced and slowly replaced partly with fat and protein. Also, those who advocate keto diets do not believe claims that the blood markers like high LDL do not lead to higher incidence of heart diseases or blockage of coronary arteries!

  • I was diagnosed with pre diabetes. I was told to do keto. Yes I did lost good amount of weight, been thru the keto flu, but I get muscle pain on my legs sometimes. Does it have to do with the diet? And I’m good in cholesterol but except hdl it’s low. So it should help raising it up right?

  • Hi Dr. Rhonda,
In regards to endotoxins and a high-fat diet: is it not the case that LDL particles can bind to LPS and aid in the removal through the bile ducts? If so, then the LPS issue of eating high fat would also be attenuated through eating high fat.
Maybe this is not the case, but curious to know your thoughts!

  • I lost 10kg from 76 to 66. I’m already on ideal BMI in 66kg and I don’t want to lose more weight. So how? If I’m still in keto no matter how much I eat fat and protein I keep losing my weight.

  • 90% of people I know have been successful and met all their goals by following low carb high fat diet without consulting any doctor. Yes, I have reversed pre-diabetics myself, goes to gym as well. Cholesterol can be lowered by avoiding certain foods as Saturated Fats, Keto acidosis never happens unless you have some serious condition, as also you can’t be on diet if you have kidney disease. Special cases, you might need guidance. Add electrolytes, add fibres to prevent constipation. Stop paying huge sums to doctors, research and those of us with elementary education can find out all the facts from internet. Just follow Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. Bernstein and lot of others

  • I agree
I was in a keto diet and my cholesterol is too high and when i decided not to continue with the keto, i got fatter.
    I missed fresh fruits!!!!
You are one in a million!
    The best doctor!!

  • of schizophrenics, as well as bipolars, and autistics as well, it is said by some sources that they “do not bear an accurate vision of reality”, I guess so, because if I ever have the sense that some social issues are just too big for me to do something about, and I feel powerless to totally answer the needs of those I care about, even while I am able-bodied with a strong will to be positive, it’s because my ability to understand what is happening is just fractional Dr.?

  • I find it harmful when doctors say diets with a high amount of meat and dairy can be helpful. Meat & dairy kills us. I hope if they do keto they try a vegan keto diet.

  • Does your appetite disappear when you go in ketosis as in a fast after day 3? Seems like there is a biofeedback response to indicate it without precision, no?

  • Fat is the original fuel… hunting and gathering mankind was first and the genetic selection mechanism from which humans arose… carbohydrates are a synthetic man made source of energy that arose from sedentary farming based food sourcing.. the diet that is not normal the USA diet based on carbohydrates

  • Because of a life time of calorie restriction abuse

This leads to caffeine abuse as carbohydrate calories are not provided for feeling energised

  • Mom,I am taking 3 weeks keto deit with intermittent fasting. But I can’t see wight loss.i am taking some hormones tablet. Can u replay about this issue.pls replay.

  • An excellent lecture Dr. Marks
Your qualities of teaching a topic like this one, with many difficult words are great!
It was a very good idea to show the difficult words at the same time on the screen.
I’m from the Netherlands and so English isn’t my native language and therefore seeing these difficult words written helps me a lot to understand your topic better.

I’m myself a teacher for over more than 30 years now doc and so I think I may say, that I can notice how someone’s skills in teaching are.
I teach children with learning disabilities (like dyslexia) and behavioural problems (some have ODD). About 25% of the children with dyslexia also have AD(H)D we know from scientific research.
It’s one of the reasons why I have become so interested in mental health problems and personality disorders.

Thanks for this topic Dr. Marks
I learn a lot from you
    Greetings from me,
    Ben… the Dutchman

  • I loved the part where the two of you disagreed on the origin of cancer: polite but pointed conversation. I am amazed by how much I learn from every one of your videos. Thank you! I’ll be waiting for that affordable keto supplement to go along with my largely vegan diet.

  • Hi doctor tracy mark thank you for the great videos you post……….since wellbutrin is a great antidepressant you once mentioned it doesn’t do well for anxious depression so i want to ask whether it is appropriate to take wellbutrin along with antianxiety drug such as buspirone for someone with anxious depression to prevent wellbutrin from causing anxiety problems for someone with anxious depression

  • I didn’t experience a horrendous level of keto flu feelings when I first started this way of eating almost two years ago it was mostly just significant fatigue in my legs when I would walk/exercise. But it didn’t last long.

  • There is so much more to study on how foods affect mental disabilities. I’m always curious to find out what new theories and studies come up with.

  • I’d be interested to hear some of this conversation with regard to home fermented foods. Several years ago I was very sick and I knew that it was due to digestive trouble. I went on what was more or less a keto diet (didn’t know it at the time)probably too much protein; but I cut out carbs and sugar completely with the exception of non-starchy vegetable sources, included a lot of homemade fermented foods as well as daily bone and meat broth. In about a year or two I was WORLDS better. Furthermore I didn’t get sick with common colds, flues etc. AT ALL while I watched my friends and coworkers and partner all get sick with seasonal microbes as they came and went.

  • 1:03:30 Dichloracetate (DCA),,A drug that inhibits the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase, thus increasing oxidative phosphorylation.” Pyruvate dehydrogenase-enzyme, which makes acetylCoA from pyruvate, which then goes to Krebs cycle. When pyruvate dehydrogenase is inhibited, less acetylCoA is formed for a Krebs cycle. Less outcome from Krebs cycle, less oxidative phosphorylation. Then how inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase can increase intensity of oxidative phosphorylation?

  • I know you have to put that disclaimer in there. Isn’t it a shame that a lot of doctors don’t like this type of eating. Thanks to a lot of what I have learned thru you and others doing Keto I have to go in a different direction. It’s hard to find doctors that go along and don’t ridicule you for doing things holistic. I am encouraged thru all the fantastic info you impart to us. Keep them coming.

  • Thank you very much doctor marks! I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard the mitochondria aspect of schizophrenia. I have heard it a couple of times in explanations of treatments with supplements for autism and bipolar. And I have noticed massive improvements in my depressive, schizophrenic and bipolar symptoms and a little bit in the ADHD symptoms just by eating healthier and taking regular vitamins and supplements. Sugar has always seemed to help quite a bit in regulating my system so I definitely see a connection as far as the glucose which Works in line with some of the autoimmune stuff I think I have that doctors don’t seem to recognize or be able to test for. I am very glad the research is finally starting to figure some of this stuff out.

  • 12 month of keto. DT2 is gone. Lost 30 pounds, psoriasis snd psoriatric arthritis is gone. Blood panel is perfect. Anectodes from people who apply it are better than any epidemilogical propaganda. BTW I am 65…

  • @ Hello Dr.Marks just wanted to stop in for support & learn & share this information with family and friend’s thank you so much have a bless rest of the day

  • hmm… he looks kinda soft and doughy. fat makes fat. studies have shown that fat metabolizes into fat more readily. So this Modified Atkins is for some rare neurological benefits? I think ill protect my heart instead and stay on a starch carb diet. Which has left me shredded and energized like a gladiator

  • Doctor I’ll appreciate if you can comment on a study published just 2 days ago. Thanks

  • Hello, Dr. Marks. Currently, I am 23, and I previously suffered from 8 years of verbal/physical bullying from the age of 10 to 18 years old, mostly from my peers at school as well as family. This traumatic experience has affected almost every aspect of my life, including relationships, confidence, and success. I was wondering if you could make a video about how childhood bullying can dramatically affect the victim into their adulthood? Also, how the saying, ” Everyone gets bullied, get over it and move on,” only makes the person bury down the pain causing the recovery process to be complicated.
    Thank you

  • Resistance bands and light dumbbell workout at home early every morning plus walking is what works for me. Keto diet and IF alongside that is perfect.

  • I only watched through the part about exercise because i didn’t want to watch a 3rd ad… I am on Keto and that is not my experience at all. I have far more energy than I had before this diet and my workouts are literally better than ever.

  • Rhonda, after speaking with Dominic D’Agostino, I would love to hear your opinions on trying a ketogenic diet. As evidenced by your famous smoothie recipe, you have never promoted a high-fat, low carb diet. Has your approach changed in any way? Even though I respect Dominic D’Agostino, I do not believer a diet based on 80-90% could deliver the benefits Dom describes. Would be interested to hear other’s perspective.

  • Rhonda, I’m only twenty minutes in so Dr. D’Agostino may begin addressing this, but you were asking about gut health and ketogenic diets. I was diagnosed with IBS 5 years ago: did a food inflammation test and a strict elimination diet for ALL my triggers, increased my green veggie into to at least 4 cups a day, etc. I recovered about 85% but still dealt with nausea and lack of appetite 2-3x/week. I’ve been on modified ketogenic diet for about a month and for the past 3 weeks have had zero of those issues. Just FYI!

  • I hate “diets”
    Ferment your foods
Eat carbs from vegetables or seeds like quinoa
    Eat fatty fish
    Avocado oil
    Milk kefir
    Supplements
    Broccoli sprouts
    And workout

  • I’m listening with great interest to this presentation.Just recently I was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig or ALS disorder. In this regard I wanted to ask if you’ve had any experience treating an ALS with Ketone type diet? Thanks for sharing.

  • Hi Dr Tracey. I already did this diet and I noticed that my mood (I have bipolar 2 disorder) kept too elevated. I stayed away from depression for months, but stayed in hypomania and slept 3 or 5 hours a day. Is this diet recommended for people with bipolar disorder?

  • Just about all the really good sources of info on the web about doing keto advise some sort of modified Keto diet..Makes sense given we are all very different. I would say start strict then make small changes and register the results scientifically over 12 months.. Strict Keto gets you really good results quickly and its very motivating, but takes 8-12 weeks to be comfortable. So i would advise get to 3 months prior to making the small changes..I turn 50 this year and I’m now 9% body fat much lower than i have ever been (in my whole life) and i work in fitness. I still drink wine on the weekend and cycle carbs around my workouts but it took time for me to do this and find my boundaries, and how to bounce back to KETO in 12-24hrs..Never felt better..:)

  • One thing I do not understand is why she is obviously quite intelligent, yet she is drinking water out of a plastic bottle and considers corn oil ( hydrogenated and gmo ) the same as olive or coconut non gmo the same???  Just curious.:)

  • Wow, this is uncanny! I just went to see a nutritional psychiatrist speak last night on this very topic, with a guest speaker with a lived experience of schizophrenia who had a ketogenic diet intervention!

  • Forgive me for being stupid but when we say 100g of protein for the day and 70g of fat, does that mean that when I weigh my meat out for my meals, for instance for dinner I weigh out 100g on the scale, is that it? Do these figures represent each other, what you Physically measure out and eat?

  • Shorter intervals exercise is better than endurance because it’s less stress on the body thus eliminating the danger of cortisol which is a fat storing hormone.

  • I am just a watcher of these videos but I watch a lot of them on youtube. Most experts think that carb cycling isn’t necessary that is the consensus I think it is fair to say. There are a few experts who don’t believe that you need to be in Ketosis full time in fact being right on the border seems to preserve the most muscle. Again, this is my observations from watching a bunch of videos from the best sources.

  • It would be helpful that when we discuss “carbs”, we differentiate grain carbs vs vegetable carbs. I personally don’t eat any carbs from grain and lean more towards carnivore. Each person needs to find their sweet spot with veggies or meat and do what’s feels good to your body. Great videos Dr Westman

  • Can Dom or some provide more detail about carb intake? If you’re measuring carbs on a total basis, it’s very difficult to maintain. If you’re netting dietary fiber against carbs, then it’s doable. Please discuss.

  • Its likely best to intermittent fast,
    With mixed in long fast,
    Eating
    Mostly plant based carb diet,
    Beans,greens,berries nuts,
With long periods of ketosis from fasting

  • His modified keto is pretty much what I run. About a gram of fat for every gram of protein, and net carbs below 20 a day, all coming from avocados, whole green veggies, and nuts. I’m okay with dairy which is a big help…if I’m short fat I just toss in some cheese or butter.

  • I like the idea of ketones but it sounds like another pharmaceutical company trying to make the magic bullet. Am I wrong thinking that. But it’s good to see that research is getting investigated. We have to look at the whole food and not just it’s components parts. Keep up the good work.

  • Isn’t it nice to live in a time where two intelligent professionals can have a stellar conversation that is available to hundreds of thousands?
I just wish I knew what they were on about:p

  • Hello Dr. Marks, I’m new subscriber to your channel. I’ve been battling depression for decades. I’ve been on a wide range of anti-depressants all of which ultimately stop working. Two years ago I went on the Keto diet and I had fantastic results. Not only was I depression free, I had never felt so mentally sharp in my life. At the time I thought I had finally defeated my long battle with depression and, since it was due to a diet as opposed to medication, I thought it was permanent. I experienced this euphoria for three months, and then it returned. By the fifth month on the Keto diet all of my symptoms had returned; first in the form of acute anxiety, followed by a devastating depression. Last summer I attempted the diet again. This time I tried to be more mindful of my eating habits; counting my macros and doing bi-weekly fasts. Once again I was depression free for a month, and then boom anxiety returned, quickly followed by depression. I’ve been severely depressed since and I seem to be drug resistant. I’m totally perplexed as to why the diet failed and nobody seems to have an answer. When I read the comments on YouTube posts about the positive effects of Keto on depression, everyone raves about it and I never come across a person in which it failed. It’s been so frustrating. It reminds me of the patients in the film, “Awakenings.” Can you shed any light on to why this might of happened?

  • My non-scientist opinion would be that gut health is dependant on what you consume on the keto diet. Some people eat junk, high in polyunsaturated fat and low in vegetables. I wouldn’t think that a diet of healthy fats and a good amount of vegetables would be bad for your gut.

  • Hi Dr Tracy
Thank you for the very informative video. Just got to tell you that I went on a protein diet 3 weeks ago and shed 7.8 kg. Unfortunately I wanted to do it too quickly and thus ate too little. Less than a week into the diet I noticed that I was getting depressed, but I persistet. 10 days into the diet I was literally shaking. After eventually determing that it was probably due to hunger I ate some and immediately felt the depression lift.
Lowering your intake too much can be detrimental to your health.

  • Rhonda let your guest speak. Everyone knows that you are well informed, but use the opprtunity to ask questions not ramble on about what you know. It’s cleary annoyed your guest in this case!To keep saying ‘yeah, yeah’as if ‘I already knew that’ sounds ego-centric. Use your knowledge to ask relevant questions and guide to conversation.

  • Raise your dietary fat to stall weight loss, cut your dietary fat if you have internal supplies to burn to lose weight basicly for most people.

  • Watched this via Marcela.com link and really enjoyed it.  Rhonda it is so refreshing to listen to an interview where the person conducting the interview is so authentic, interested in the topic and has the background knowledge to volley with the guest while also stimulating them mentally into different avenues of the topic.  Bravo!

  • WOW!!! Great discussion. Quite a dynamic duo here. This discussion id so packed with info. I keep listening to it over and over.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. Your studies and work here is awesome guys!!! This is one of the best I’ve come across.

  • Rhonda, first off you’re absolutely stunning. Secondly, thank you for conducting this interview, it was extremely helpful. Keep up the good work.

  • I have permanent impotence even after stopping antidepressants almost 10 years ago. This has been evaluated and recognised by the European Medicines Agency (the EMA) recently and will go on the information leaflets now. Can you please do a video and research on this condition called Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) please?

  • Rhonda, I really hope you review how unclearly and quickly you speak, mumbling, etc. and I have wasted an inordinate amount of time hitting pause\rewind and Even SLOWED down the speed to no avail to capture what YOU are interjecting!! Really?!!

  • Dr Marks,
I’ve been on a keto diet for the past several years I simply maintain my weight. There’s one thing you’re not discussing and that’s good fats saturated fat versus mono unsaturated fat you had bacon for breakfast with eggs eggs are good but they’re high in cholesterol the yolk so the best thing in the morning is a protein shake with an avocado . Skip the bacon . If anybody’s interested in the ketogenic diet a.k.a. keto check out Dr. Berg here on YouTube.
    General repair

  • THANK YOU for all the information you have shared! I have been looking for answers to the keto diet and started following you over the weekend. You have provided the best consistent, understandable information I have found online! I have a long journey to health ahead of me and I appreciate your channel and FB group! Thanks again and wish me luck!

  • Hey doc! Are you sure on that muscles only run on glucose? In the link below, it mentions that “Muscle: The major fuels for muscle are glucose, fatty acids, and ketone bodies”. I think glucose is what muscle prefers, but it can very well function on fatty acids and ketone bodies, if the claim in the link was correct.

  • Dr. I believe what causes cardiovascular disease in diabetic patients is the micro vascular and macro vascular damages associated with hyperglycemia. According to literature the bursting of pericytes causes the micro vascular abnormalities commonly found in diabetics. New research only links glycated and oxidized LDL to potential heart risk. High triglycerides is probably one of the biggest factors to cardiovascular incidents. Literature also mentions that high protein diets do not damage kidneys, once again high carb diets do specially when BG is above 180 mg/dl. If a person has already a low GFR level cutting protein might retain kidney function for terminal patients a few more months but the kidneys are already too damage to even matter. I am type 1 diabetic with a low carb high protein diet. I am not concerned with fat and my metabolic panel is great animal fat is relatively harmless, we should be discussing fructose particularly. My total Cholesterol was 166, HDL 51, LDL 102 vLDL 13, triglycerides 54. My HDL and triglycerides are almost 1:1 which leads me to believe most of my LDL is probably the large bouyant benign LDL, I probably have low glycated LDL levels since my HbA1c is lower than most diabetics and my triglyceride count is fairly low. All with the power of low carbohydrate diet. I think Keto is not optimal and its not the same as LCHP diets. I produce a fair amount of glucose via gluconeogenesis of the animo acids in the protein I eat, and I require insulin to digest the protein without rising above 100. I find it crazy that most diabetes specialists do not account for protein in their sliding scale method, shows how little they understand of the illness they are treating. Dr. Richard K Bernstein is a pioneer in this method. I was able to reverse my bad vision in about 4 months of normal BG my gum infections disappeared after about 6 weeks and my athelete foot disappear after about 3 months. The power of normal BG levels of 85 mg/dl. Current BG 82 mg/dl after 3 hrs from dinner no spikes above 5 mg/dl on my CGM only managed with R human insulin, humalog for occasional highs and Tresiba. I wish other Diabetics find success like I did and get to live the long complication free lives they deserve. My old doctor even said it’s not if you will get the complications, but when… with BG of 75 to 99 the answer is never…

  • The best way to gain weight in Keto is do keto and eat carbs and sugar yup you’ll gain weight. I believe education about keto lifestyle is necessity nowadays esp for those who are diabetic. On my previous comment, there are some points i kinda defensive about keto lifestyle coz it really changed my life, I was prediabetic btw, and not anymore. My cancer is reversing. I am following the right Keto… eating highly processed meat and eating bars of butter (yuck) is not even recommended… keto lifestyle requires to drink lots of water, an adequate amount of salts, optional intermittent fasting (which may not be good for diabetics), and days to eat regular meal in the real keto lifestyle… so education is very essential.

  • Ummmm i don’t feel weak, i’ve been doing keto but my energy is amazing i even can dance zumba two full hours…. well I am not diabetic tho… the carbs i don’t eat are rice, pasta, and bread… my cancer even reversed because of this lifestyle… I limit other carbs too.. i don’t eat fats from bacon and other highly processed food… yes my HDL and LDL are in perfect range… Keto is NOT high protein diet its moderate and the ratio is 1:1… 1lb of wt = 1g of protein… Keto requires MORE water intake…ummm I am a Filipino if we have gathering i dont display drama just because of food if you are knowledgeable to Keto you will definitely have fun with any gatherings… Who told you in Keto makes you dehydrated? That’s not Keto… You need to drink at least 3L of water‍♀️…even if you are not in Keto and you don’t drink water you’ll be dehydrated… i never experienced Keto flu thank God..In Keto if we do bulletproof cofee it is recommended to add salt.. i just don’t because i am on conservative chemo.. hahahaha nope i don’t have constipation in keto… yes i agree with processed meat that causes constipation even not in keto diet so don’t incorporate that in Keto lifestyle…

  • Hey Rhonda! I love your work.
I noticed that they have made a energy drink containing ketones and carbs. Is it possible for the body to use both ketones and carbs simultaneously?

  • Great video Dr. Marks! I suppose that the cute answer to a BP diet is to shoot for the middle between Mediterranean and Keto diet . GOD BLESS

  • I lost 26 lbs. the first 3 weeks and then I passed out when I was downtown with my husband and my cholesterol was high so he made me go back on carbs now I have gained all the weight back is there anything I can do to not make my cholesterol go up so high P.S. I am in Quito Ecuador so the doctors here are very old medicine and don’t understand the Keto Diet. Please help…….. my weight is 180.lbs and I am 57 years old and 80. lbs over weight

  • Love you and appreciate your work. Why does it seem like you know more than everyone you interview?:) I do have 2 questions for you. Will you come to Sacramento to interview me about functional addiction recovery? And my second question is how can someone as informed as you drink Dasani water out of a plastic bottle?:-)

  • This doctor’s information has been so helpful for me I’m new at diabetic 2 I need to find out some information about skin conditions

  • Initially started keto 2 years ago for weight loss. Pretty much at my weight goal. Will stay on it forever as I had a head injury in 2010 (TBI) and the ol’ brain always could do with a little help… Fasting twice a week too.

  • I went on the ketogenic diet using lard butter beef fat and all the other animal fats, My stomach could not cope with coconut oil mct or olive oil and i have had great results so people don`t worry to much eat what fats you can don`t get to tied up in scientific dogma.

  • I have multiple sclerosis. I was put onto this diet over 2 years ago by my general practioner. I have never looked back. Studies are showing it is good for many conditions for the brain like brain trauma/injury, Alzheimers, Parkinsons and other conditions, and it has been a way to tret epilepsy since the 1920, and migraines (not sure when this was impletmented for migraines). The reason I love it the most is it blasts that fatigue. Ketosis is a fabulous source of energy. The weight loss is a bonus!

  • I want to ask about those keto supplements! I believe from what I know that Glucose is the primary fuel and it has priority over fat also ketons. So why do we need exogenous keto supplements if we eat plenty of fat and how would keto supplement promote ketosis with supplements if there is glucose in the body. So for me is either you are on a keto diet eating plenty of fat and really, really low carbs or you cannot stay in ketosis. So the simple fact that you have ketones circulating in your blood stream does not put you ina state of ketosis, correct me if I am wrong!

  • This video was very informative. Thank you. But, that the two of you kept looking at each other, especially Jeremy, was very distracting. Just fyi. It also made you look unsure of what you are saying.
