  • i used to eat ice cream from the tub every single day. i was addicted to sugar it became such a problem. when i stopped prioritising satisfying my sugar craving, completely stopped buying ice cream for home and refocused my cravings on other wholesome foods i love to eat (eggs, avocado, broccoli), my cravings for ice cream disappeared. now i can enjoy ice cream on occasion when i go out without feeling the need to binge eat it.

    having an 80/20 mindset doesn’t work: it’s like making sure sugar is a part of your everyday diet. so have a no sugar focus, because the chances of sugar and highly processed foods slipping in your diet everyday is very likely regardless.
    but when you do have sugar, eat it as slowly as you possibly can: you’ll enjoy it more and it’ll satisfy your sugar craving much better.
    intermittent fasting was also key for me because i wanted to spend the time i was allowed to eat on wholesome filling foods.

  • Well, oxidative stress might be an issue if the sugar is found in foods with little to no antioxidant content (eg. ice cream, milk shake, soda with value meal…) But, adding sugar to a fruit smoothie is different due to the antioxidants in the fruit that are eaten with the sugar.

  • There are FOUR in the cluster… increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

  • I’m off the hard stuff (sugar), but I had to give up anything with sweetness including sugar, sweeteners, and fruit. It wasn’t easy, and it won’t be easy for you, because sweetness is very addictive. It really took months, with the first thing to do was stop making “keto treats” and sweetened fat bombs. And then I even weaned myself off of 85% chocolate and the handful of berries. It was the only way to stop cravings and to move to a place where I don’t want anything sweet now. And who wants to work that hard and go back? Good luck if you want to do this, as the whole health care, pharmaceutical, advertising, and big food corporations are working against you. But it’s possible.

  • Thanks Mr. Taubes for maintaining a sustained critique over the years with regards to the oversimplified view that the dietary and medical community holds concerning calories. In no other area, where the topic of energy is discussed, is the type and/or source of energy considered irrelevant. Only in the world of diet do so many so called “experts” look at the energy value of a food and think that is the end all be all of the discussion. Could you imagine a mechanical engineer telling his boss that his machine needs X many units of energy, and then telling him that the fuel source does not matter because energy is energy? If I run a sports car on regular unleaded fuel, verses super unleaded fuel, it will make a difference in the efficiency of the engine, regardless if both types of fuel contain the same amount of energy. If I try to run a car on coal, when it is meant to run on gasoline, the car will not move despite the fact that you can amass enough coal to produce as much energy as gas.

I wish I could just stay at home, not have a social life and work from home and never leave the house because as soon as I do, I’m tempted everywhere with any little sugary thing I see.   • Sugar is an anti-nutrient… It requires nutrients from your body to process it. It is highly acidic and makes your blood acidic so then your body draws minerals from your bones and muscles to buffer the blood. And then you pee it out. Sugar kills the beneficial bacteria in your gut which is the true root of your health. If you’re trying to get healthy and not age, refined white sugar is not your friend and I don’t care how many hacks you do. Sugar is a serious addiction and it seems that our friend here is seriously minimizing that. And the body is able to desaturate saturated fats when you have an intake of good omega fats…nuts avocados etc It is very easy to pick a lot of studies when you don’t really have an overview of the interconnectedness of the body and therefore lack a larger context of understanding.   • My biggest problem is with breakfast. Pretty much in all camps, they have one or two recommendations. Eggs, plain greek yogurt or maybe in vegan is a ton of recipes for tofu or tempeh to mimic non-vegan breakfasts. Some cook needs to give some love to breakfast.

  • Dr. David Unwin eloquently speaks about the importance of black swans, like his first patient who reversed their type-2 after going on a LCHF diet. Hundreds of black swans later and you don’t need a statistically significant double-blind study. That is the safe harbor of arrogant fools. Doctors are too busy coding for additional $$ to recognize the black swans staring them every day in the face. Yes, keep giving that overweight type-2 diabetic drugs to increase their insulin sensitivity, or even insulin itself, to treat a condition caused by too much insulin, while watching them get progressively sicker.   • I tried every diet. I would start aggressively which would lead to quitting after few days. I realized that I had to gradually make changes instead of going cold turkey. once I did that I lost a bunch of weight right around 30 lb and sugar is a big cause of weight gain and crankiness.   • My wake-up call came about a week ago when I had a routine physical exam and the doctor told me, “Your blood sugar is one point below diabetic!” Oops.

    I’ve been a vegan for 18 years, and had quit drinking alcohol 12 years before that—after which I thought I had solved my sugar problem, to tell you the truth. I ended up substituting one addiction for another, of course.

    I have tried to avoid processed foods, yet I know I still have a sweet tooth—as did my grandmother, who lost a toe and then a leg to Type 2 diabetes. (It was well-known she had pulled many of her own teeth by tying a string around the diseased tooth, tying the other end of the string to a doorknob, then slamming the door.) In her later years she was legally blind, and she died at 75 with an enlarged heart.

    This past week of scrutinizing every label has been an eye-opener for me; it seems most processed foods I had taken for granted have some sugar in them: tomato sauce, cheese-flavored crackers, spicy potato chips, even salsa. I spent yesterday throwing away numerous items that had been opened; I’m going to take the unopened jars and boxes and donate them. And the six pints of vegan ice cream in the freezer? Down the toilet.

    This past week I’ve felt a mental clarity that’s a great reinforcer to keep going; although I’ve skimmed articles over the years about “sugar brain” and “sugar belly,” I feel I’m on a new path.

  • Sugar is addictive, mentally and physically. It alters your hormones, spikes hunger signals etc. Sugar/processed carbs had me in it’s grip until the age of 57. Going low carb, cutting out all carbs but for green vegetables and some nuts and avocados completely changed my life. Appetite control is automatic now, I eat 1-2x/day after eating 5-6x day for 15 years. Down to highschool weight again. Feeling like a million bucks.

  • The medical costs for excessive sugar must be very high. This makes me wonder why Insurance Companies don’t promote to the Doctors reducing sugar and simple starchy carbohydrates intake. Educating Doctors and patients could save the Insurance Company millions of dollars and would be the right thing to do. Given that companies are interested in the bottom line, it’s a mystery why we’re not seeing the Insurance Companies aren’t doing this.

  • First step to clarity: Obesity is a symptom and NOT a disease. If obesity caused Type 2 Diabetes, there wouldn’t be skinny people with Type 2 Diabetes, and there are. Most symptoms have more than one cause. Insulin resistance has weight gain as a symptom, but so does Hypothyroidism, which is notoriously under-diagnosed and poorly treated. Other diseases that cause weight gain: Certain bacterial and viral infections, Cushing’s Syndrome, Lipedema, Praeder-Willi etc etc.

  • I’ve loved Taubes’ work for years and had the pleasure of meeting him in the hallway at a conference last year. I expected a quick signing of my book, but ended up having a conversation. I was even more impressed after that. He remains humble, approachable, and (most importantly) questioning.

  • The problem is: LOTS of sweets have not just sugar but a lot of fat as well: donuts, chocolate, cookies, cakes, deserts etc… this high amount of sugar and fat combined equals to all kind of health problems: inflammation, heart diseases, diabetes and i think also cancer.

  • Replacing carbs (of all kinds) with natural fat changed my life. I don’t feel hungry while losing weight.   • Have been on a virtually carbless diet for five weeks. Three days in and I had withdrawals. I had someone working as my diet partner that helped me stay strong. After two weeks. I got to have a “cheat” meal. That helped. It was something to look forward to. At five weeks, I have lost 11 lbs and have had one glucose reading over 200. The biggest change has been the insulin issue. I have had to reduce my Lantus from 40 to 24 units per day. I still take homologue but only before lunch and or dinner, but I can’t take more than 8 units. This is the hardest most drastic diet I have ever tried, but seeing the immediate drop in the need for insulin has really helped me stay on the diet. Plus I do get my cheat meal every two week.

Imagine you opened a business, but you decided you weren’t going to track your sales and purchases. No spreadsheets tracking sales, no keeping track of stock, you’ll just follow your gut feelings and run your business by the seat of your pants. Do you think this kind of management would result in a successful business? Obviously not, if you’re not keeping track of your revenue and costs, then you won’t even realize when you are spending more then you earn.

  • Real Stevia may not be a problem but garbage like Truvia et all is a great way to give yourself diarrhea and added unseen sugar read the ingredients of Truvia there is a tiny amount of Stevia in it but most of it is Erythritol with added dextrin to form a white powder. Dextrin adds a small amount of sugar to the lot but in this case they consider it in such a small amount less than half a gram (per severing )that by law they don’t have to count it. When you’re on Keto you need to count all sugar so you would have to weight out your serving because the packet size is not one serving.

  • I had Keto fried chicken for the first time!! Woohoo!! Dang, it was good. Get a bag of chicharroness (fried pork rinds). I used plain. You can use spicy, but make sure there are no carbs, because they often add sugars to the spicy kind.
    Crush the pork rinds in your hands down to the consistency of Panko. It crushes easily, takes only a few seconds. Add your spices. Dip the chicken in whipped eggs, then in the crushed pork rind, and fry. The chicken comes out REALLY crispy and delicious. Best fried chicken I’ve ever had, and not a carb to be seen anywhere.

I question whether this is caused from eating sugary cereal, candy, etc since I was a kid in the 1960s or if it has to do with the crap in the food, such as pesticides,, hormones, chemicals, etc.

  • Also look at US wheat and grain production. Then compare that to average height over the same period. People get shorter the more grain they eat. Shorter people is typically a sign of malnutrition. The founding fathers generation were actually very tall. Very few grains or sweets, almost entirely meat and veg.

  • On artificial sweeteners Some are undoubtedly just as dangerous, or more dangerous, than sugar. Aspartame creates neurotoxicity when ingested, just to give one example.

    A better choice is stevia. There are extracts made from the leaves, with the stems removed, that do not have the funny aftertaste that is apparently from the stems. Nutri Medix is one brand that does not have that aftertaste. It does not taste exactly like sugar, but when added to most foods o beverages, it provides a pleasantly sweet taste. (no affiliation)

    The use of stevia may continue a sugar addiction. It may cause insulin to rise in some people. Some have compared it to methadone for those who need to wean themselves off of sugar, rather than going ‘cold turkey’.

  • For those who do not want to give up sugar totally, just yet… Cutting back by any amount is beneficial. Avoiding processed foods, or prepared foods that don’t need sugar anyway is a good place to start. Then try making your own treats at home, using quality ingredients, and keep cutting back on the amount of sugar you put in. This won’t work as well with some baked sweets, like cookies or cakes, but there are a lot of things we can still enjoy, and even enjoy more, by cutting back on the sugar in them.

    The sugar still has damaging effects on our bodies, but every little bit helps.

    Try an apple pie use a mix of apple varieties with no sugar or starch (flour) added, just cut up the apples and sprinkle whatever spices you like, and bake in a pie shell (with no sugar added). The pie is much more flavorful, and the texture will be fine. It’s quicker and easier too, than making a pie filling.

    (Some breads have a lot of sugar, not just a little to help the yeast get started. Most brands of prepared condiments. Breakfast cereal. The starch is just about as bad as the sugar since starch is made of sugar molecules hooked together that come apart when we eat the starch so try bacon and eggs for breakfast. Look for bacon, and ham, that has no sugar added. In some places, you can find uncured bacon sold as pork belly. Etc.)

    Over time, nearly everyone cutting way back on carbs finds that many foods taste of sugar that are not desserts ketchup, barbecued meats (btw, added sugar is not necessary to brown meats), Chinese food, many bottled salad dressings (so quick and easy to make at home without the additives!) and that most desserts are ridiculously sweet. Often the sugar taste overwhelms the rest of the flavors. Try it and see.

How people respond to that adrenaline may varysome may get panic attacks, while others may ‘act out’. It appears to be the flip side of ‘hangry’ which appears to be a symptom of sugar withdrawal.

  • Sugar is not the only problem. Nathan Pritikin identified that the American diet was around 43% total calories fat. The rest is refined or junk carbs lacking in fibre. Whereas in countries with no degenerative disease they eat 15-25% fat and complex carbs. Ironically taxing sugar leads to more obesity as artificial sweetners induce a larger prolonged insulin spike than sucrose. Sugar is completely natrual but we should not eat it in excess as it’s empty calories Fat is a much more potent cause of high blood pressure than salt.

  • Something really important that people who say they cannot quit sugar tend to forget: the more sugar you eat, the more you need for things to taste very sweet. My first boyfriend always drank several cans of energy drink per day and said that fruit doesn’t taste sweet. I thankfully always hated energy drinks (if you open a can in the same room I am in, I become very nauseous), but I did eat al lot of processed foods with loads of sugar for a long period of time. This was also the time I didn’t feel much for fruit. As I stopped eating so much sugary food, fruit started tasting more and more sweet.
    Such transitions can suck, but ultimately it is just a few weeks or months that are absolutely worth it.

    I think this is very similar to transitioning from omnivorous to vegan. I went slowly, just eating meat less and less often untill I went pretty much completely vegan. Near the end, meat started tasting so disappointing. My boyfriend is going through the same thing now, commenting on how weird it feels. He recently ate a wiener roll because he was really hungry and that was what friends had put on the table and he used to love those. He was surprised to find that he did not enjoy it at all.

    Tldr: humans are creatures of habit and so are our tongues. You get used to the flavours of things you eat regularly. Change what you eat and after a little while you will prefer the new thing over the old. If you give it time, you will start to like healthy stuff that you maybe did not like before

  • presjo If you eat refined carbs that spike your insulin a lot but in a calorie restricted diet you can still get fatter and starve internally. Moreover, the insulin spikes will make you moody and wanting to eat more. Excessive eating is a function of hormonal changes that happen when spiking insulin. The only way to get people on a hypo-caloric, sugar only diet, is to lock them out and force them to eat what you want, otherwise the whole body would be against it. As soon as they are free of the diet they’ll eat even more than before. Hypo caloric carb based diets never work long term.

    As to the cholesterol story, all statins, cholesterol lowering drugs, target an enzyme called HMG-CoA Reductase which is responsible for bootstrapping the metabolic pathway that produces LDL particles. The HMG-CoA Reductase activity is up-regulated by INSULIN. This is why insulin is a bad thing to spike on daily basis.
    This is stuff we already know, we have Nobel prizes based on this[1, 2].

    This is why you can find raw vegans with high cholesterol and omnivores with low cholesterol. Cholesterol level is not a function of dietary cholesterol but of insulin level and, in rare cases, genetics.

    Because of high blood sugar, that spikes the insulin, LDL is also more likely to get glycated or oxidised, lose its 3D shape so the liver will never be able to recycle it, at which point it becomes small and dense and atherogenic.

    The shitty thing is, we know insulin upregulates cholesterol production but we give people pills instead of telling them the truth, which is to lower their insulin.

If you ask anyone drinking soda or putting sugar in their coffee they will not argue that they are doing so because of the health benefits, but for the taste and quick acting energy, it provides. But people who crave and add processed sugar in their diet is primarily because they are eating inadequate unrefined starches (potatoes, oatmeal, rice, corn, beans, whole grains). And if Gary Taubes follows a low-carb diet and doesn’t add sugar, it is likely because he his highly motivated by selling books, not because he doesn’t have sugar cravings on a low-carb diet, no?

Or the glucose units of starch? Or the fructose units in asparagus and leeks? Or the units of sugar that make up the beetle and grasshopper shells that many ‘land’ people eat? Or the sugar units that comprise insoluble fibre?
