Sugar is not only the root cause of today’s diabetes and obesity epidemics (had these been infectious diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and. The case against sugar holds that this condition in turn can make us fat, and also diabetic, and prone to heart disease, cancer, gout, and the rest. In other words, toxic sugar would seem to offer. “If you ever doubted that sugar is the root cause of our obesity, diabetes, and heart disease epidemic, then look no further than The Case Against Sugar. This deeply researched, well-reasoned exploration of the history and biology of sugar would convince any supreme court of nutrition that it is sugar, not fat, that should be indicted and limited.

In The Case Against Sugar, Taubes takes direct aim at the biggest culprit carb that is plaguing the health of those dealing with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and more-it’s SUGAR! Some people might scoff at the idea that we need an entire book all about the dangers of consuming sugar claiming that it’s obvious to most people that sugar is not good for you. In “The Case Against Sugar” he argues that dietary fat was fingered for decades as the perpetrator of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Abetted.

Some people might scoff at the idea that we need an entire book all about the dangers of consuming sugar claiming that it’s obvious to most people that sugar is not good for you. That’s why added sugar can be dangerous: not because it’s “as addictive as cocaine” ( it can be addictive, but not nearly as much as cocaine or as the act of eating itself ). The real danger with sugar is not that it’s inherently fattening. A gram of sugar is still just 4.

The Truth About Sugar New BBC Documentary 2015 Sugar is the big bad wolf of the diet world, but not that many of us know quite how to quit it or, in fact. Sugar alcohols are safe for people who misuse alcohol. Several sugar alcohols are found naturally in fruits and vegetables.

However, most. The author of “The Case Against Sugar,” Gary Taubes, gained prominence as a science writer in 2002, with a cover story in the Times Magazine—“What If It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie.

They claim it not only rots your teeth but also causes obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.18 Few would argue that the calories we consume as sugar would be better spent on healthier foods, but whether current levels of sugar consumption pose a serious health risk is hotly debated.

  • https://youtu.be/K28RaaeZWKs fluoride is horrible Mic check this out keep an open mind and look into when and why it was first used what its used in.. @Mic the Vegan

  • I start getting lost when he says caloric intake doesn’t matter. I agree with him on a lot but have a hard time wrapping my head around the calorie stuff

  • Gary stick with Sugar and Carbs if you want to pontificate about Climate Change I WANT TO SEE THE STUDIES, DATA and just HOW YOU ARRIVED AT SUCH A BS CONCLUSION AND JOINED THAT CHURCH. (I threw up a little in my mouth when you started down that path).
Now I want to know what is Your definition of Science, what do you consider the Scientific Method and is there such a thing as “Settled Science”?
You went from Hero to Zero in my mind in about 5 seconds.

  • How old is this guy (DOB 1956) is this a recent video? He is the best guy on the subject, very well studied and thought about, with consideration to morbid obese individuals and innervative.

  • Why is it so hard to do what I know is true. Sugar has been so hard on me yet it’s in everything. My daughter has become an insulin dependent t1 diabetic and still drawn to this blasted substance. Oh My Gosh, and we obsess over opioids or vaping when sugar and HFCS has done more damage than any of that. Thank you for keeping up the fight for our health.

  • Dr. Bowen At Charleston Ketamine Center while treating my bipolar disorder inadvertently broke my sugar addiction. I’ve been sugar free for 3 weeks now!

  • Mic is always talking like he has some great scientific background…Ah does Mic have a Phd in Bio Physics or something?
Mic exactly what are your credentials to be giving out all of this advice?? Come on tell us MIC the vegan..

  • What about these sugar scenarios which trigger estrogen dominance. If you cant explain the obese from the non obese that are eating the same foods. Its estrogen dominance. Triggered by sugar but can reversed easily if caught early.

  • IMHO Excess Fructose=More than YOUR body can handle, which could be very different for each individual, although everyone has an upper limit.

  • Taubes’s logic breaks down. The case has been made against sugar. However, just because sugar is bad, does not make a high fat diet good. Whether intentional or unintentional, Taubes is in a perpetual state of conflating the two, as is typical of low carb proponents.

  • Great speech, quite motivating as well. But Stevia is not a healthy-minded sugar replacement.
Andddd how can you not have a pizza and coke for lunch, I’m definitely a sugar addict by your definition and need to work on it..

  • i used to eat ice cream from the tub every single day. i was addicted to sugar it became such a problem. when i stopped prioritising satisfying my sugar craving, completely stopped buying ice cream for home and refocused my cravings on other wholesome foods i love to eat (eggs, avocado, broccoli), my cravings for ice cream disappeared. now i can enjoy ice cream on occasion when i go out without feeling the need to binge eat it.

having an 80/20 mindset doesn’t work: it’s like making sure sugar is a part of your everyday diet. so have a no sugar focus, because the chances of sugar and highly processed foods slipping in your diet everyday is very likely regardless.
but when you do have sugar, eat it as slowly as you possibly can: you’ll enjoy it more and it’ll satisfy your sugar craving much better.
intermittent fasting was also key for me because i wanted to spend the time i was allowed to eat on wholesome filling foods.

  • Added sugar a danger for sure, but people shouldn’t cut out complex carbs like with keto and carnivore, because like i talk about on my channel, it is another danger too, low blood sugar is real.

  • That study on fluoride is a joke. No time to go into why but if you want real mountain of research on this go to fluoridealert.org

  • Fantastic video and book! I have noticed that when I try to introduce fruit back into my diet, and although it’s natural and unprocessed sugar, it affects my energy and mood drastically in a negative way.

  • My doc told me to eat sugar and eat loads of carbs as my sis died of a heart attack. There was nearly a riot when I told him to do some research. I’m on keto and he said keto is dangerous and if there’s a family history. One person my sis actually wouldn’t call that family history. I’ll stick to my keto thanks

  • Around 38:00 Taubes is saying he doesn’t blame the sugar industry for what they did. I’m not so forgiving. Corporations are always ahead on what the science actually shows. The sugar industry knew the evidence was pointing to them. They put a lot of effort into making sure fat was implicated and remained so.

  • Maybe he could explain why Vegan’s who eat a diet high in carbohydrates have some of the lowest rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

  • BRILLIANT Gary. It’s a far too long ago that this pandemic of the misinformation about what makes us sick and fat was exposed… it seems the facts have to represented again and again and again. When you follow the $$$$$s as Gary found our in the medical world.. it’s even worse than realised… when you’re dealing with the sick… it even worse, than even worse than realised.

  • Vegetarians have as much atherosclerosis as meat eaters, and higher levels of homocysteine. Heart disease is associated with consumption of trans fats, refined vegetable oils and sugar…..
all of which come from plants.

  • I had tried sugar free diet and it workes well for my health. But im not that discipline. Now i quit diet because of work bussiness reason. It seems not practical. And my health just got worse.

  • Well, oxidative stress might be an issue if the sugar is found in foods with little to no antioxidant content (eg. ice cream, milk shake, soda with value meal…) But, adding sugar to a fruit smoothie is different due to the antioxidants in the fruit that are eaten with the sugar.

  • As a huge proponent of avoiding sugar and processed food at all costs, how do you go about reconciling indulging in these foods around the holidays? I am 21 years old and am heading home to be with family. They are all overweight and consume these foods on a daily basis and even force them upon me. Since I am at the whim of their decisions while living with them, how should I go about maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

  • Sugar is vastly over used. They sneak it into everything. They know it’s bad or they wouldnt make up random names for it. I wish I knew all this 20 yrs ago. 142 pounds and 99% sugar free!

  • There are FOUR in the cluster… increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

  • I’m off the hard stuff (sugar), but I had to give up anything with sweetness including sugar, sweeteners, and fruit. It wasn’t easy, and it won’t be easy for you, because sweetness is very addictive. It really took months, with the first thing to do was stop making “keto treats” and sweetened fat bombs. And then I even weaned myself off of 85% chocolate and the handful of berries. It was the only way to stop cravings and to move to a place where I don’t want anything sweet now. And who wants to work that hard and go back? Good luck if you want to do this, as the whole health care, pharmaceutical, advertising, and big food corporations are working against you. But it’s possible.

  • Well lemons to this? Lemons and everything we consume is carbon   Tell sugar that too ok? Hey? Your brain needs sugar too. The problem I believe is to much of anything is not so good. Just gotta know when to stop that’s all.

  • I guess the Starch Solution is damaging people’s health because it allows use of sugar. I suppose someone who was experimenting with the Starch Solution will go back to bacon, sausage, and eggs for breakfast instead of oatmeal with sugar.

  • Thanks Mr. Taubes for maintaining a sustained critique over the years with regards to the oversimplified view that the dietary and medical community holds concerning calories. In no other area, where the topic of energy is discussed, is the type and/or source of energy considered irrelevant. Only in the world of diet do so many so called “experts” look at the energy value of a food and think that is the end all be all of the discussion. Could you imagine a mechanical engineer telling his boss that his machine needs X many units of energy, and then telling him that the fuel source does not matter because energy is energy? If I run a sports car on regular unleaded fuel, verses super unleaded fuel, it will make a difference in the efficiency of the engine, regardless if both types of fuel contain the same amount of energy. If I try to run a car on coal, when it is meant to run on gasoline, the car will not move despite the fact that you can amass enough coal to produce as much energy as gas.

  • Dextrose is corn sugar manufactured from cornstarch per CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATION 21CFR184.1857; therefore, glucose (blood sugar) is not dextrose (corn sugar) and dextrose (corn sugar) is not glucose (blood sugar). They may be biochemically identical (Molecular Formula: C6H12O6)]; however, not with regard to their allergenicity; e.g., glucose (blood sugar) cannot provoke an allergic response, whereas dextrose (corn sugar manufactured from cornstarch) can prove fatal to anyone with an IgE-mediated allergy to corn. It is for this reason that IV fluids to which corn sugar (dextrose) has been added are contraindicated for administration to corn-allergic patients.

  • I’m a sugar addict. I wish I could just stay at home, not have a social life and work from home and never leave the house because as soon as I do, I’m tempted everywhere with any little sugary thing I see. It’s hard for me to turn down anything sweet even if it’s bad for me, like even if it contains gluten or dairy since I’m allergic to both, I will still gobble it down because I have ah zeeeerro willpower to refuse once it’s in arms reach. This sucks. Until I become fully in control, I can not dance around temptation with the 80-20 thing. It will overpower me instantly.

  • Sugar is an anti-nutrient… It requires nutrients from your body to process it. It is highly acidic and makes your blood acidic so then your body draws minerals from your bones and muscles to buffer the blood. And then you pee it out. Sugar kills the beneficial bacteria in your gut which is the true root of your health. If you’re trying to get healthy and not age, refined white sugar is not your friend and I don’t care how many hacks you do. Sugar is a serious addiction and it seems that our friend here is seriously minimizing that. And the body is able to desaturate saturated fats when you have an intake of good omega fats…nuts avocados etc It is very easy to pick a lot of studies when you don’t really have an overview of the interconnectedness of the body and therefore lack a larger context of understanding. A good example here of reductionist science. Just saying ‍♀️

  • the first speaker is a liar. tobacco does not cause cancer or any chronic illness. it’s tobacco products. there’s a big difference. just like the difference between raw milk/cream and white liquid poison fake milk in the store.

  • My biggest problem is with breakfast. Pretty much in all camps, they have one or two recommendations. Eggs, plain greek yogurt or maybe in vegan is a ton of recipes for tofu or tempeh to mimic non-vegan breakfasts. Some cook needs to give some love to breakfast.

  • I cut massive carb and refine sugar. Drinking green tea like 3-4 times a day, jog 4 times a week for 4 months, from 73kg to 58kg. Now I am weight 52-53kg:) still drinking green tea

  • Cancer: 1:06:09 in the video.

Type 2 diabetes is a disease of too much sugar in the blood. The treatment is to give drugs to lower blood sugar. When blood sugar goes down, where did it go? Did it leave the body?

No. The drugs cause the sugar to be accepted by the insulin resistant cells… to include the tumor cells. I hypothesize exogenous insulin may promote tumor growth by increasing the supply of glucose to the tumor cells.

  • Taubes looked at this correctly but failed to see the pseudo science of the fake moon landings or the falsity of Nixon calling the boys in the L.E.M from 237,000 miles away when we cannot get a cel phone signal on a mountain top, when there is supposed to be thousands of satellites straight above our heads. Go figure.

  • There is no reason to believe sugars, plants, etc. were put here for us. They were doing just fine. We might be the unexplained invaders still trying to figure out what to eat. I don’t think it’s carbohydrate.

  • Do we need to worry about saturated fat in whole foods? Like when I have a choice between black beans with 0 sat fat and chickpeas,m with a few grams of saturated fat, I choose black beans but how much should we be cautious of saturated fat in whole foods in general?

  • She’s just envious ’cause she can’t eat sugar.

No I’m joking, grear video, I’ll try to never eat sugar again, or almost at least. In some parties you gotta eat the cake or less they’ll cry…

  • Dr. David Unwin eloquently speaks about the importance of black swans, like his first patient who reversed their type-2 after going on a LCHF diet. Hundreds of black swans later and you don’t need a statistically significant double-blind study. That is the safe harbor of arrogant fools. Doctors are too busy coding for additional $$ to recognize the black swans staring them every day in the face. Yes, keep giving that overweight type-2 diabetic drugs to increase their insulin sensitivity, or even insulin itself, to treat a condition caused by too much insulin, while watching them get progressively sicker. The solution is as close as your iPad. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Mat 11:15

  • Not say I disagree with reducing or cutting out sugar, but I remember hearing of a study out there that claimed kids get hyper because of the excitement around sweet treats, not literally from the sugar itself. Been awhile since I’ve seen it though…

  • how bad is it? pretty fucking simple, sugars, carbs and shit vegetable oils made America obese. id say that’s as bad as it can be. but you go ahead and keep pushing that shit. your short term vegan solution work at the beginning but eventually you’ll have to switch to meats and animal fats to live. just ask all your ex vegans about it.

  • I had read somewhere that an infection from H1N1, (“swine flu”), can raise the risk of children getting type 1 diabetes. Good talk.

  • I tried every diet. I would start aggressively which would lead to quitting after few days. I realized that I had to gradually make changes instead of going cold turkey. once I did that I lost a bunch of weight right around 30 lb and sugar is a big cause of weight gain and crankiness. Save your life by saving the sugar for ants only.

  • Those studies on sugar are suspect. This video examines them at superficial level, and just goes with the herd’s cries against sugar.

  • It’s crazy how we need to have discussions on what to eat. If we didn’t have so many people, breeding like rabbits, we wouldn’t have to figure out how to feed them with crap foods that are mass produced with crap ingedients.

  • Fluoride in drinking water and diet: the causative factor of chronic kidney disease in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Also my Daughter is a dentist and she told me that studies show the addition of fluoride to drinking water is most beneficial to lower Socio economic children and for adults and more privileged children the addition of fluoride is less significant

  • My wake-up call came about a week ago when I had a routine physical exam and the doctor told me, “Your blood sugar is one point below diabetic!” Oops.

I’ve been a vegan for 18 years, and had quit drinking alcohol 12 years before that—after which I thought I had solved my sugar problem, to tell you the truth. I ended up substituting one addiction for another, of course.

I have tried to avoid processed foods, yet I know I still have a sweet tooth—as did my grandmother, who lost a toe and then a leg to Type 2 diabetes. (It was well-known she had pulled many of her own teeth by tying a string around the diseased tooth, tying the other end of the string to a doorknob, then slamming the door.) In her later years she was legally blind, and she died at 75 with an enlarged heart.

This past week of scrutinizing every label has been an eye-opener for me; it seems most processed foods I had taken for granted have some sugar in them: tomato sauce, cheese-flavored crackers, spicy potato chips, even salsa. I spent yesterday throwing away numerous items that had been opened; I’m going to take the unopened jars and boxes and donate them. And the six pints of vegan ice cream in the freezer? Down the toilet.

This past week I’ve felt a mental clarity that’s a great reinforcer to keep going; although I’ve skimmed articles over the years about “sugar brain” and “sugar belly,” I feel I’m on a new path.

  • Sugar is addictive, mentally and physically. It alters your hormones, spikes hunger signals etc. Sugar/processed carbs had me in it’s grip until the age of 57. Going low carb, cutting out all carbs but for green vegetables and some nuts and avocados completely changed my life. Appetite control is automatic now, I eat 1-2x/day after eating 5-6x day for 15 years. Down to highschool weight again. Feeling like a million bucks.

  • I’m addicted and I hate it, the withdrawl from sugar is bad, so tired and I just feel weird. I will quit though, slowly working it out.

  • 18:38 lol I am watching this and eating 99% lindt chocholate and did not know this. It is my powertool. Being a sugar addict for life, it most likely saved me. IMO this is the best fatty non selfmade stuff since it has no sweet taste at all. Pure cocoa and no bitterness. I was a TOFI now hopefully TO(ti) Good luck to ya all at your personal fight against sugar addiction and habits promoting it. Lind99% did it for me. Now I am addicted to it! DOUgh! Have to cut down on it and at least start making my own.

  • Stop making me laugh l m trying to straighten my wrinkles….
Ps,.check out Robert Kennedy Junior, s..on instagram…publication on fluoride

  • The medical costs for excessive sugar must be very high. This makes me wonder why Insurance Companies don’t promote to the Doctors reducing sugar and simple starchy carbohydrates intake. Educating Doctors and patients could save the Insurance Company millions of dollars and would be the right thing to do. Given that companies are interested in the bottom line, it’s a mystery why we’re not seeing the Insurance Companies aren’t doing this.

  • “Yeah, but it’s totally worth it” = says my wife and kids. It’s truly addictive; some people would just rather die than give up their fix. Trying to talk about carbs and sugar makes you a modern day Cassandra.

  • 30:04 The Masai lived on the meat, milk, and blood of their cattle, and goats; not the urine. The Masai did not/are not separating the components of milk and remixing them, or heating it to the point of destroying the enzymes, beneficial bacteria (‘probiotics’), immune boosting factors, most of the vitaminsincluding Vit C, and altering the proteins which makes them more likely to trigger allergies. Their cattle are not confined, and they are not fed grain, much less GMOs, and these days both GMO and non-GMO grains are both drenched with toxic man-made chemicals.

  • First step to clarity: Obesity is a symptom and NOT a disease. If obesity caused Type 2 Diabetes, there wouldn’t be skinny people with Type 2 Diabetes, and there are. Most symptoms have more than one cause. Insulin resistance has weight gain as a symptom, but so does Hypothyroidism, which is notoriously under-diagnosed and poorly treated. Other diseases that cause weight gain: Certain bacterial and viral infections, Cushing’s Syndrome, Lipedema, Praeder-Willi etc etc.

  • I know from personal experience that if I consume too much sugar in form of cake n chocolates…. I start breaking out in a rash on my hands with blisters and of course I hardly eat refined sugars now….

  • Trying hard to go low carb, at some point in the year I crave it whether it’s in noodles or chocolate confection but then feel physiologically bad.
I’m adopting the Keto diet after few experimental diets these past 4years, each had a sort of carbs food in especially vegan ones. It’s exhausting to see all our shops sell essentially refined and added sugar! Takes twice the time to chase the perfect food.
Overall though moderate/high protein with adequate fats diets have been the best to regulate my weight (ectomesomorphic body so fast metabolism) but also my mood and this hunger feeling.
I’m only 22 though I feel like British food has violated my healthy habits ever since I’ve moved in…. The country of added sugar and!

  • You have changed my life by merely telling the truth about the devastating health effects of excess dietary sugar, thank you so much

  • Vegans don’t usually like talking about sugar because they want to make sure meat remains the scapegoat for atherosclerosis and other diseases. It ain’t meat that’s the problem, it’s processed carbs, especially refined sugar.

  • It’s funny, isn’t it, that when he really gets down to the nitty-gritty, that this is serious shit, someone in the audience starts coughing, like it’s getting boring, or something. Don’t let them distract you, Gary. You are on point.

  • Table sugar is created naturally; it comes from sugar cane… That’s as natural as fruit. The difference is it’s just crystallised and put in a bag. It’s still glucose.

The reason why weight gain has gone up in relation to “sugar” is because the sugar is conjoined with the fats from the mars bars and doughnuts (for example). These types of foods contain both sugar yes, but also fat (which is the problem).

It’s why there are no fat fruitarians.

If we take away the fat issue, you’ll only do harm with sugar if blood levels stay high and elevated *not spiked*. Blood sugar spikes are normal and acceptable since it’s a spike, levels always come back down.

Every human cell in the body runs on sugar.

  • I really enjoy your videos.

  • Coke cola is probably the most deathly and destructive product to be injected in the population. Then many have had to inject
    Insulin.

  • A bit ”hippie-ish”, however, the truth is hard to deny. A most worthy message for all homo sapiens (and probably every other living creature.)

  • Hey friends please review my article on this topic, I need your help click link https://www.billgot.com/2019/05/top-11-signs-that-youll-take-high-sugar.html

  • nutrient supplementation may help people not “go too far” in terms of letting themselves have some of something which they used to be addicted to http://www.doctoryourself.com/alcoholism.html

  • What about the fake sugars like sweet n low etc? I don’t use them but just curious about the effect on your body because people think drinking shit like bangs are good cause they don’t have calories and sugar lol

  • I met Garry back in 2012 and had a good conversation.. He used to focus on the carbs but a certain moment in time he left it out and joined Robert Lustig…

  • 50:25 gout is suggested here. I have gout and going keto has solved this problem for me. beef and other meats were red herrings. Mushrooms, asparagus, or any other high purine foods are also minor. Fructose from sugar/hfcs is the culprit and this chart shows a direct correlation. This is on orders hundreds to times higher than red meats and anything else I can eat. I bet there are no studies on this. Lets do a study where everyone has gout eats same amount of meat. one group eats with sugar/HFCS and one group does not. Count results. Then switch control and test group. Count results again. I bet everyone goes Keto once they realize that sugar and HFCS is the problem or at least no sugar/HFCS.

    53:40 zero studies on sugar.

  • I had no idea that the “diagnostic effect” dated back to Joslin. That excuse is used to this very day to explain the exponential increase in cancer incidence.

  • Gary, in your reference to the Fitz et alia studybased on the Massuchusetts Hospital, you fail to mention whether Fitz was referring to autoimmune onset (so called Type 1) or to insulin resistance-mediated (so called Type 2) diabetes. As a Type 1 myself, I find this conflation vexing; even if not your intention, it is confusing if not misleading. If I myself have missed something and misunderstood, please accept my apologies. Please clarify this matter in any future talk you present on this history. Thanking you with respect, Len.

  • “Fewer people are aware of” not “less” people. If you can count them it is fewer. Otherwise, very informative and I learned a lot! Do more research on the Fluoride though.

  • Mic I have a question for you. Once the sugar from fruit is converted to glucose and gets into the blood stream, how does your body differentiate between whether the source of this glucose was from fruit, sugar or other carbs?

  • it is the refined sugars and the refined fats. animal products when consumed at minimal and optimal quantities is actually quite fine and likely very healthy and very beneficial. [email protected] post.harvard.edu dr. kenny.

  • All plants are made of sugar+indigestible stuff+ toxins+anti nutrients+ some plant nutrients+ digestive disruptors, lol, some sugars in whole food may be worse than table sugar, sugar is 100% vegan of that i am sure

  • there are way more then 2 sources of sugar but really we should call it by its real chemical name Fructose and its found in almost all fruits, in same tree sap and even some whole plants
Fructose however is not found in meats and is low in green veggies thats why the Keto diet is better

All vegans get mad when we talk about sugar but then they go and compare their best vegan recipes with our worst kito recipes
    Those are not good comparisons

Good comparison is the worst of vegan vs the worst of keto being sugar/fructose chips fried in vegetable oil and bread
    VS
Lars butter and  extra fatty bacon

The 3 worst vs the 3 worst
But you vegans refuse to show the results because Keto wins everytime when you play fair thats why meat is simply more popular

  • The only time I eat more than 5 teaspoons in a day is if my friend or family offers me dessert and I dont want to be rude. But when I was a kid, it was closer to 2 cups per day. Agave sweetener just makes me sick.

  • The amount of sugar one should eat cant be the same for Everybody. A 30 year old man who is 6ft.2 has a much faster metabolism than a 50 year old woman who is only 5ft.4.

  • Hey Brian, love your videos, love your attitude. I have a strange question what type of chalkboard / chalk do you use? I think the format of you standing in front of a large writable board is brilliant!
    Thanks!

  • Tuabes says Cal’s in / Cal’s out is too simplistic and naive but then cites occams razor over and over as the benchmark as to which you should always judge subjects.

  • probably the worst ted talk ive ever watched. she literally restates the same thing over and over. don’t eat sugar. don’t eat sugar. actually you can eat some sugar, but you shouldn’t. everyone is wrong and i’m right

  • At least freelee the banana girl has credentials…what are yours Mic…I would hope your not some High School graduate giving out
advice…whew and people listen to this nonsense…

  • “People don’t eat many french fries” Last week I was in the buslting downstairs lobby at Wayfare Tavern in SF hallway at the end of the lunch hour; a worker rolled by me with a three tiered cart, each tier piled high with large white frozen bags of something…
I asked the deliverer, “What is in all those bags? French Fries?” I guessed.
“That’s right, Ma’m, he answered, and they will all be consumed at this evenings dinner hour”…
    Aghast, I remarked, “Really?”
Without hesitation, he replied, “Without a doubt, yes.”
    My my my……

  • Ultimate carbs low fat and protein is better becauseall carbs are sugar because your body break or convert most of them into sugar glucose

  • Holy shit! Reading these comments really opens your eyes to how ignorant everybody has become while thinking they’re biochemistry and nutrition experts.

  • I have no idea how you would measure this. I eat a peanut crunch cliff bar a banana and a cup of blue berries and a cup of oat milk for breakfast every morning. That totals like 70g. Even if I just assume the only refined sugars that would still put me at 40, and I’m over the limit already. Getting below 36 would be a monumental task considering my freezer is full of vegan ice cream

  • I hv been wondering, for a long time, if indeed sugar, in the amounts we eat, has also created a horrible dependency on the feelings that sugar produces. I find it difficult to visualize the average American actually changing their food history and food memories for better health. Just a thought.

  • It’s the sugar. We aren’t designed to live off carbohydrates, processed sugars, high sugar fruits.
We need meat, a few berries, few green leafy….
    We are hunter gatherers…
The reason people don’t want to hear this is that bread and cookies and pies and etc etc etc have to give it up… forever….
Can’t have a little hear and there because I deserve it.

  • I eat healthy fats, avocado, or nuts with my sugar to lower the speed of digestion! It totally works, slows the sugar spike to a manageable amount

  • I’ve loved Taubes’ work for years and had the pleasure of meeting him in the hallway at a conference last year. I expected a quick signing of my book, but ended up having a conversation. I was even more impressed after that. He remains humble, approachable, and (most importantly) questioning.

  • The problem is: LOTS of sweets have not just sugar but a lot of fat as well: donuts, chocolate, cookies, cakes, deserts etc… this high amount of sugar and fat combined equals to all kind of health problems: inflammation, heart diseases, diabetes and i think also cancer.

  • Replacing carbs (of all kinds) with natural fat changed my life. I don’t feel hungry while losing weight. I have more energy and sometimes I feel the need to only eat once a day (whereas before I’d be eating all throughout the day). I’ve always been skinny-fat but this dietary change helped me tone up and gain a lot more confidence. In the morning I have a full fat cream coffee then eat regular salted peanuts at my desk (not too much) during the morning/afternoon. I eat a pot of coleslaw for lunch or some meat or some cheese then an omelette/ meat veggies and cheese for dinner.

  • No one follows the USDA recommendations. How do I know that? The average American eats a diet of 37-45% cal. fat. With that fat intake they CANNOT be eating the USDA diet it is impossible!! Pritikin highlighted the lies of the US govt in the 1980’s.

  • We don’t need as much fat as people like to think. I couldn’t get my abs back until I cut out as much fat as possible. Even just eating beans oatmeal veggies fruit and grains, I get about 10% of my calories from fat. Just add in a small amount of pumpkin seeds and nuts and you quickly get to 30%. But I was adding a tablespoon of olive oil or peanut butter and drinking coconut milk and eating chocolate thinking I needed more fat. And that’s when I got fat and stayed fat even when I cut my carbs to 20% of total calories.

  • I just baked a cake during this lock down and god I was surprised by the sugar that goes into it. Safe to say I am not taking that extra slice.

  • Cancer cells, they only need sugar to activate and survive so when you eat sugar you are feeding your cancer cells so they can kill you one day…..

  • Its okay to drink it but its not about if its tasty or delicious so it can irritate the Son of God known as Jesus Christ but your views about mothers are over the line with too much uncomfortable feelings in the both the brains and the heart an attitude like that could mean death

  • Aha! So, that’s where the BS about fructose making you eat too much came from. Someone (Tappy) just assumed that because fructose causes weight gain, and “everyone” knows that eating too much causes weight gain, that fructose must make people eat too much. Another mystery solved.

  • Western diet? Have you seen the Indian diet. I know so many Indians who are diabetic from years of eating kgs of mithai all the time. Especially the older people. They binge on that stuff. Jalebi, burfi, gulab jamun, soan papdi. The amount of ice cream eaten in Indian, though… that’s a Western invention and they eat it like it’s going out of style. It’s cheap too. You can get a chocolate covered ice cream stick for about Rs. 20 or less, which is $0.25 USD. You can get a Cornetto for that even. The mithai is even cheaper. And it’s sold by the kg usually. Like drugs are.

  • What about the body’s desperate need for sugar to use as energy? Especially the brain, as well as glutathione production and thyroid function? How does this factor into that equation?

  • Vinegar info is interesting, leading me to think that Kombucha with low sucrose and a fair amount of vinegar-ish is a nice combo…for those of us that need a sugary drink fix every now and then. DISCLAIMER: I brew my own:D

  • Sugar should be heavily taxed. It would be a win win situation. People’s health will improve and more money from the tax will be available for the public healthcare.

  • Guns are NOT a disease, nor are citizens vectors. Doctors need to focus on illnesses and disease, not crime. The last thing we need are physicians who are social justice idiots.

  • I really believe that sugar is not a treat to our health if we use it in moderation. I make a youtube channel A natural remedies tips on how to be naturally healthy. visit me on,my channel see you there guysssss. thanks

  • I think fructose makes liver fat but dietary fat puts fat in other places like the B**, so if you don’t get fat it’s better to eat fat than refined sugar. the Inuits ate no carbs and a lot of saturated fat and no diabetes e.t.c. also the Okinawans ate 85% carbs same thing. it’s not the macros that matter but if you are eating real food and not ultraprocessed garbage!

  • Sugar is very addicting, and because of this, I believe sugar causes obesity. Dr. McDougall seems to believe that sugar doesn’t cause obesity, and he uses the Rice Diet to help prove his point. I thought about this. How can the both us be right? It seems that most sugar is paired with caffeine as in flavored coffees and sodas, or paired with fats as in frosting on cakes and cereal with milk.

  • I wish I would’ve been in the audience when that liberal piece of shit had to throw that in about guns…I would have stood up and told him shut the fuck up and and stay on topic…

  • Guns don’t kill people! Evil people kill innocent people. Innocent people protect themselves from evil people. And yes if an evil person tries to do harm to me or my family I will use my gun and hopefully kill the evil person who usually gets guns ILLEGALLY.

  • In 1977, my idiot brother who dropped out of high school to join the army, then deserted, was home from boot camp. He observed that acne and allergies were all caused by white sugar. Up until the mid 90’s you could drink a dr pepper and actually get energy from it. Also doritoes gave you energy. Nowadays they make you feel like crap. During WW2 in order to gain access to rationed sugar, the dr pepper corp presented to Congress a scientific study showing that drinking dr pepper at 10 am, 2pm, and 4 pm increased productivity.

  • I had non alcoholic fatty liver. I started exersising and cut out soda.
I reversed my fatty liver within 2 years.
My alt numbers went from 140 to 45

  • look at the lectures by robert lustig. he DIAGRAMS what happens IN THE LIVER with sucrose and high fructose. IT IS NOT THE SAME AS GLUCOSE.!!! look at the lectures of daniel amen, the doc who scanned the NFL players brains, and 80 THOUSAND others. SUGAR IS POISON to your brain.!!!!!

  • It is a health food if you burn it off and heart disease I doubt it but maybe for a regular cheeseburger consumer with a milkshake and some soda and fries.

  • Fluoride is a class 6 neurotoxin (like hexavalent chromium the one Erin Brockovich fought against). Just do a google image search on “fluoride bag” and look at the toxicity number classification on the bags.

  • Have been on a virtually carbless diet for five weeks. Three days in and I had withdrawals. I had someone working as my diet partner that helped me stay strong. After two weeks. I got to have a “cheat” meal. That helped. It was something to look forward to. At five weeks, I have lost 11 lbs and have had one glucose reading over 200. The biggest change has been the insulin issue. I have had to reduce my Lantus from 40 to 24 units per day. I still take homologue but only before lunch and or dinner, but I can’t take more than 8 units. This is the hardest most drastic diet I have ever tried, but seeing the immediate drop in the need for insulin has really helped me stay on the diet. Plus I do get my cheat meal every two week.

  • I agree with this talk whole heatedly, however the government is highly responsible for the diabetes epidemic. The government should not be involved in this debate. Whenever government gets involved in science, science ends and politics takes over.

  • How come this crap food industry is never a Presidential topic? It should be! Food companied are causing this health care crisis costing 100’s of billions.

  • If vegans have 0 intake of LDL Cholesterol, how come it is still measured in their body? Do we produce the bad LDL cholesterol as well as HDL cholesterol inside our body?

  • Calorie reduction-ism is BS and just lazy science. Don’t listen to sugar and wheat bots. Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F5o0a4p_3U

  • honestly know something?… When I gave up oil, I noticed results quickly, but when I gave up sugar, I didn’t notice anything. When I reintroduced sugar, I didn’t notice anything. But when I reintroduced oil, I got sleepy, and lethargic and a stomach ache. So I don’t think sugar has noticeable results or consequences.

  • Brian, thanks for casting some light on this critical issue. I truly hope your brother will heal from cancer. Best wishes from Spain

  • I quit sugar for two weeks and went back to eating sugar for two weeks. Boy was I feeling ill during the last two weeks. My mood was so low and my performance got worse on my workout routine. I’m on my first day of quitting sugar again.

  • His point about “calories in calories out” being a tautology isn’t exactly sound. He compares it to economics and climate change; a more apt comparison is business management. Imagine you opened a business, but you decided you weren’t going to track your sales and purchases. No spreadsheets tracking sales, no keeping track of stock, you’ll just follow your gut feelings and run your business by the seat of your pants. Do you think this kind of management would result in a successful business? Obviously not, if you’re not keeping track of your revenue and costs, then you won’t even realize when you are spending more then you earn.

Calories in and calories out is a tautology, this is true; but it’s also the basic management work you need to perform to successfully lose fat. You can get rid of sugar, you can go on a ketogenic diet, or a vegan diet, or a Mediterranean diet, but if you don’t perform the basic management work of tracking your input and your output then you’re like a business man who doesn’t keep an eye on his revenue and spending.

  • Research shows that Stevia, even though it doesn’t cause a rise in blood glucose, causes an important release of insulin, which counters it’s blood glucose advantage.

  • Obesity’s cause is NOT primarily sugar, rather the rotting, gmo corn fed puss infused tortured flesh of a dead animal, struggling through an exquisitely designed system.

  • Not that long ago, I thought it was an exaggeration to suggest that sugar consumption today is as dangerous as smoking. Having listened to hundreds of speeches like this presented by knowledgeable people, including many doctors from around the world with incredible data to support their conclusions, I agree that sugar is pretty much poison. High fructose corn syrup should be outlawed.

  • Real Stevia may not be a problem but garbage like Truvia et all is a great way to give yourself diarrhea and added unseen sugar read the ingredients of Truvia there is a tiny amount of Stevia in it but most of it is Erythritol with added dextrin to form a white powder. Dextrin adds a small amount of sugar to the lot but in this case they consider it in such a small amount less than half a gram (per severing )that by law they don’t have to count it. When you’re on Keto you need to count all sugar so you would have to weight out your serving because the packet size is not one serving.

  • 30:04 ‘Any population, when they start eating the Western diet, (from their traditional diet).. they experience these tremendous increases in obesity and diabetes.’ Weston A. Price called the Western diet, the Foods of Commerce (and that was long before Hot Pockets and pizza rolls).

  • I had Keto fried chicken for the first time!! Woohoo!! Dang, it was good. Get a bag of chicharroness (fried pork rinds). I used plain. You can use spicy, but make sure there are no carbs, because they often add sugars to the spicy kind.
Crush the pork rinds in your hands down to the consistency of Panko. It crushes easily, takes only a few seconds. Add your spices. Dip the chicken in whipped eggs, then in the crushed pork rind, and fry. The chicken comes out REALLY crispy and delicious. Best fried chicken I’ve ever had, and not a carb to be seen anywhere.

  • south east asia once upon a time eat a lot of rice with fish now fish so expensive…so they turn to chicken becoz of this diabetes increase

  • Love Gary’s work! I’ve been on a very low carb diet for 5 years and was recently diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver. My lab work and BP are fine. I question whether this is caused from eating sugary cereal, candy, etc since I was a kid in the 1960s or if it has to do with the crap in the food, such as pesticides,, hormones, chemicals, etc.

  • I used to drink around 3 liters of regular soda and I stopped limiting it to 2-3 diet cans per week. Went from 117 kgs to 84kgs and I want to reach 77kgs.

  • interesting how “guns” aren’t listed as a cause of modern chronic disease on the slide at the 2;00 minute mark put the speaker slipped it in anyways!

  • IF SUGAR… IS THE NO. 1 KILLER IN AMERICA… WHY IS IT STILL BEING SOLD? WHEN MILLIONS HAVE BEEN.. AND ARE BEING KILLED? SURELY NOT FOR MONEY? HUMMMMMM

  • I appreciate this very much. New information on this topic for which I’ve been studying closely for over 2 years now. Wow! The history of sugar is fascinating!

  • Wheat flour is sugar. Potatoes are sugar. Rice is sugar. Bread is sugar. Fruit is sugar.
Berries are good:) Intermittent Fasting is great.
Look up intermittent fasting on YouTube.

  • The problem with the lecture is too many versions of same stupid question at the end that had been answered the first time around.

  • Regarding your comment about reducing fluoride in tooth paste, I believe the avoidance of fluoride due to the implications of fluoride on the pineal gland. There’s a ton of research on this topic and it’s very very fascinating. I discovered this information after reading various articles and reading “Becoming Supernatural” by Dr. Joe Dispenza.

  • lol vegans omg omg cholesterol/saturated fat is going to KILL YOU! then immediately: sugar is a HEALTH FOOD LOLL LOL LOLLOLLL OL you cant make up this nonsense

  • Hello, ma’am. I would really love to hear your info, but your mic setup and perhaps nervous habit of lip smacking makes the video unwatchable.

  • Isit correct that if sodium fluoride is spilled, it is required for a hazmat team to clean it up?
If that’s true, why would anyone put it in their mouths?
Also, if you look at populations where they eat zero processed “foods”, their cavity rate is also zero,
and so is their fluoride consumption.
    Sodium fluoride is a chemical.
It doesn’t occur naturally in food.
It was introduced into the water supplies, it wasn’t a naturally occurring additive.
It is a waste product of mining, or some such crap.
It requires hazmat gear to handle it.
What, of any of these make a person think it might be a good idea to consume this stuff,
Particularly when the benefits are only supposed, and not proven?

  • When you’re referring to sugar I’m not certain what you mean. I eat a lot of fruit in smoothies every day, so what about fructose?
I use stevia instead of sugar,so how does that fit in with this?

  • Had stir fry for dinner zero sugar..not a gram except for what is in red peppers and onions.
Then I had a handful of blueberries for dessert! glass of 2 percent milk.

  • if you look at the actual biochemistry of carbohydrate metabolism you will understand that its triglycerides that make you have high blood pressure and heart attacks

  • Fluoride is a byproduct of making aluminum. They use to have to pay to have it hauled away as hazmat material because it is very
toxic stuff. So the big corporation slip a few bucks to the dental association who then claims it prevents tooth decay.
It was meant for application to the teeth only not every organ in the body. Margarine corp did the same with the heart association
so they would tell how great margarine is. Then you have the politicians demanding that it is put in all of our water supply.
So instead of paying to have it hauled away…they sell it to the cities to put it in our water supply…If you read the toothpaste
labels…in real fine print it states do not use this more than twice a day? Ah if it is so good they would have you brushing your teeth ten times a day with there product…Capitalism at its best.

  • Also look at US wheat and grain production. Then compare that to average height over the same period. People get shorter the more grain they eat. Shorter people is typically a sign of malnutrition. The founding fathers generation were actually very tall. Very few grains or sweets, almost entirely meat and veg.

  • Why do we have to wait until adulthood before learning about this. We need to educate starting with kindergarten, but I guess sex education is more important than teaching about obesity, which is the number one health crisis today.

  • Thank you for this great video! Follow the money as to why this was not called a pandemic and stopped. Diabetic disease and cancer are money makers.

  • 1:11:21 “Could it be that it doesn’t pass the blood-brain barrier somehow?” No. It could not be that it doesn’t pass the BBB. If one lacks the ‘scientific literacy’ to understand why said question is redundant, one shouldn’t be allowed to ask the question at all. And that’s because all it does is create a distraction that some listeners might latch onto and Voila! Another spurious and annoying theory muddies the topic even further.

  • I’m really trying to go full WFPB with no refined oils or sweeteners (or as little as possible) I’m thinking of making sugar something I use for special occasions like holidays and birthdays, I’ll give the date sugar, or just blended dates a try.

  • On artificial sweeteners Some are undoubtedly just as dangerous, or more dangerous, than sugar. Aspartame creates neurotoxicity when ingested, just to give one example.

A better choice is stevia. There are extracts made from the leaves, with the stems removed, that do not have the funny aftertaste that is apparently from the stems. Nutri Medix is one brand that does not have that aftertaste. It does not taste exactly like sugar, but when added to most foods o beverages, it provides a pleasantly sweet taste. (no affiliation)

The use of stevia may continue a sugar addiction. It may cause insulin to rise in some people. Some have compared it to methadone for those who need to wean themselves off of sugar, rather than going ‘cold turkey’.

  • For those who do not want to give up sugar totally, just yet… Cutting back by any amount is beneficial. Avoiding processed foods, or prepared foods that don’t need sugar anyway is a good place to start. Then try making your own treats at home, using quality ingredients, and keep cutting back on the amount of sugar you put in. This won’t work as well with some baked sweets, like cookies or cakes, but there are a lot of things we can still enjoy, and even enjoy more, by cutting back on the sugar in them.

The sugar still has damaging effects on our bodies, but every little bit helps.

Try an apple pie use a mix of apple varieties with no sugar or starch (flour) added, just cut up the apples and sprinkle whatever spices you like, and bake in a pie shell (with no sugar added). The pie is much more flavorful, and the texture will be fine. It’s quicker and easier too, than making a pie filling.

(Some breads have a lot of sugar, not just a little to help the yeast get started. Most brands of prepared condiments. Breakfast cereal. The starch is just about as bad as the sugar since starch is made of sugar molecules hooked together that come apart when we eat the starch so try bacon and eggs for breakfast. Look for bacon, and ham, that has no sugar added. In some places, you can find uncured bacon sold as pork belly. Etc.)

Over time, nearly everyone cutting way back on carbs finds that many foods taste of sugar that are not desserts ketchup, barbecued meats (btw, added sugar is not necessary to brown meats), Chinese food, many bottled salad dressings (so quick and easy to make at home without the additives!) and that most desserts are ridiculously sweet. Often the sugar taste overwhelms the rest of the flavors. Try it and see.

  • Small correction The indigenous people consumed chocolate as a drink, which is how it was also consumed, at first, in Europe. It was the Swiss, centuries later, who were credited with mixing it with milk and sugar to make it into a solid form that could be eaten. Sadly, most milk chocolate is also loaded with sugar. Some of us blend chocolate with extra cacao butter and milkfat (aka cream or butterfat) to increase the creaminess and smooth out the bitterness of chocolate, while keeping the sugar level low, as in dark chocolate. Of course, this has to be done at home; it is not being done commercially.

After all, Oreos prove that all you need is brown food coloring, sugar, refined flour and Crisco oh, and advertising to make people crave your product. This is so much cheaper to make! The profit margin is therefore much higher.

  • On the notion that children are not affected by sugar, beyond the brief euphoria, is… interesting. Everyone has seen children on a sugar high become hyperactive. Maybe they have not recognized it because most children are fed sugar and starch all day long.

Dr. Georgia Ede, in ‘Our Descent into Madness’ cites research that shows people having a strong release of adrenaline HOURS after ingesting sugar. This study was conducted with teenage boys, but there is nothing that suggests that this does not happen with people of all ages and genders. How people respond to that adrenaline may varysome may get panic attacks, while others may ‘act out’. It appears to be the flip side of ‘hangry’ which appears to be a symptom of sugar withdrawal.

Even among parents that try to limit sweets or sugar, their children are fed fruit, (almost always modern varieties of fruits with massively higher amounts of sugar than wild fruits),and STARCH multiple times a day. What we were not taught is that starch is basically just sugar molecules linked together, and those links come apart almost as soon as we eat the starchy food breakfast cereal, bread, pasta….

  • cavities aren‘t caused by the acids bacteria produce. cavities appear when the biochemical balance of the body isn‘t right. so refinde sugars kill from the inside. just look at the observations of dr weston price who looked at why there were people around the world which were almost 100% resistent to demineralization (aborigines, outer hebrides )

  • What a quack Taubes is. Walter Kempner was reversing the diabetes of his patients in the 1940’s. That diet consisted of white rice, fruits, fruit juices, and table sugar while excluding all other foods.

  • Why on earth do these food manufacturers load all food with tons of sugar for, absolutely ridiculous. Cakes yuk sweets yuk just shit I throw in the bin. British cakes total crap its impossible to eat that garbage. I try every now and then to see if the idiots have cut back on sugar. You lot would sell a lot more if you followed France Germany,Poland and lots of other countries. I recently bought cakes off a foreign lady who is trying to earn a bit extra. Top class her cakes were outstanding. So if they can do it why can’t Britain do it. What the fuck is it with you sugar lovers fucking horrid. Try for example donuts…. what does sugar do for people tell me,because all the countries I have eaten in the food has been top class. It’s something the fat cats who sit in their offices need to sort out now. Then I might just buy British again. Cut back the sugar

  • The problem with capitalism is that while it allows individuals to reap great benefits from market “disruptions” and “innovations,” those same innovations can easily ruin the health of whole generations of people before we even understand what is going on. Not to mention ruining the health and well-being of an entire planet full of people and plants and animals. Capitalism will be our demise.

  • Sugar rots teeth… what do you think it does to arterial linings when too much sugar floats around in the blood stream… it rots the vessels which damage leads to heart disease. Not hard to figure out… its like an acid solvent to cells which line the artery. I bet sugar has a similar response to cocaine, opiod receptors in the brain…

  • In a scientific revolution, the experts with the PhDs and MDs are not to be trusted. So it is OK, Gary, if you don’t have advanced degrees. You are still our hero.

  • I like that there’s always some douche in the Q&A that tries to one-up the speaker, in this case the last guy. Then Gary schools him without losing his cool.

  • -An “Estrogenic” obese body is created ;by sugar, high carbs, refine carbs, eating too much fat and over eating protein.Sugar is sugar.. fruits,,refine carbs, fructose (sugar) in fruit. Eating toxic factory food, fast food,, dairy, cheese, milk,, mayonnaise, all salad dressings, peanut butter, whey-protein shakes are all “damaged fats” are toxic to your liver, brain and heart,, all vegetable oils,,”polyunsaturated fats””, over consumption of any fat including healthy fats like saturated fats will make you gain weight. Drinking alcohol including red wine are toxic to the liver. The less you eat the longer you will live and healthy you will be. A slow unhealthy liver cannot metabolise process any fats including healthy fats.

The biggest problem with controlling diabetes (insulin) and weight through diet is that people are lazy. You can lead a horse to water but can’t force them to drink. Most people rather eat fast food,, wheat, white flour, factory frozen food,, can food, protein powder and dairy full of casein that destroy the cells in the pancreas and cause cancer and take pills or shoot insulin than to change their shitty eating habits.

We live in an “instant gratification” society full of “lazy people” with zero 0 discipline or work ethic. Sad but true. If you want to lose weight watch your intake of “carbs”, keep your sugar level below 110 by intermittent fasting and eating less.People who eat less live longer. Be careful since the equivalent of 12 teaspoons of sugar happens very quickly. For example:

1 cup of milk equals = 2 teaspoons of sugar *
1 cup of rice (cooked) equals = 9 teaspoons of sugar*
1 banana equals equals = 5 teaspoons of sugar •
1 baked potato equals = 7 teaspoons of sugar •
    1 sweet potato = 8 teaspoons of sugar •
1 cup of strawberries equals = 2.5 teaspoons of sugar (low sugar)*
    1/2grapefruit = 2 teaspoons of sugar
Coca cola (one can) 8.25 teaspoons of sugar –
Raisin Bran cereal 7.75 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) –
Grapes fruit 4 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams)
Tomatoes 0.7 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) –
1 Muffin (one chocolate chip muffin) 4.75 teaspoons of sugar
Special K cereal 3 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) Corn Flakes
2.4 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) Alpen cereal
5.75 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams) Mangos fruit
3.2 teaspoons of sugar (per 100grams)

A cup of seedless prunes has, in effect, 25 teaspoons of sugar! Scientists find in comparing the sugar levels in the blood after the consumption of a snickers bar that has 8.5 teaspoons of sugar the same as “”two bread slices “”!.
The sugar equivalent is of 1 large bagel a whopping 12 teaspoons of sugar!..It is beyond what the body, the liver and pancreas can metabolize. We are practically growing “” cancer farms “!

Lastly, it is worth noting that there are many breads that a single slice of which will raise your blood sugar more than a US Snickers bar (which has a GI of 68/97). to be healthy you must keep your blood sugar below 110 (“”everything”” including eating too much protein will raise your insulin.)

Keep your protein portions and meals small, you cannot cheat your body Not even with paleo diet or ketogenic diet will not work for every one. Eating healthy and intermittent fasting is best solution to be slim and healthy for “” Me “” ) find what works for you, do experiment with your self and one day you will hit the solution that works for you…keep trying!

Only water will not raise “insulin” hormone everything else including protein will raise your insulin, Try intermittent fasting. No carbs no cookies, no baked goods, keep your blood sugar around 110 or under. The less you eat the better you control your insulin hormone and blood sugar and you gain no weight. If you’re addicted to carbs and sweets you will not lose weight.Get rid of your addiction and control your “mental health” control your “Cortisol” and “stress” or you not lose weight.

Taking mineral “Magnesium” its good for cortisol and stress.People who are magnesium deficiency have the highest heart disease, heart attacks and Irregular Heartbeat,(arterial plaque ). Diabetics have magnesium deficiency, elevated blood glucose levels increase the loss of magnesium in the urine, which in turn lowers blood levels of magnesium.” So getting enough magnesium is especially important in diabetes and people who are border line diabetic or over weight.

Before you start eating any meal take three spoons of Apple cider vinegar this will bring down your blood sugar. Eat Salads with no oils, only with lemon or vinegar. If you go to bed late you will not lose weight, if you have sleep Apnea it will be very hard or impossible to lose weight the best go see a sleep doctor. Sleep Apnea is a very serious sleep disorder disease.

Also don’t eat fruit if your plan is to lose weight ; all fruit will cause your blood sugar to go up. Fruit sugar called fructose is toxic and will spike your blood sugar and raise your insulin.Fruit should only be eaten by healthy slim people in season.

Every morning drink with warm filtered water mixed with lemon everyday, detox your liver, kidneys with water and lemon. natural vitamin C from lime or lemons make your arteries strong and healthy and cleans your liver and kidneys water and lemon (warm) the liver prefer warm water.Try to drink at least a litre of water a day.

For breakfast eat a high protein diet or better don’t eat breakfast. Eat no grains,No baked goods,No refine carbs, not nuts,No lectins,No beans, eat a Lectin-free diet. If you feel hungry drink a cup of organic coffee with no sugar this will calm down your hunger spams.Coffee will calm down your hunger but don’t drink more than one cup a day.The Amino acid called L-Tyrosine is a good supplement to take if your thyroid is slow.Anything you eat should be organic close to mother nature eat nothing from a can or package. No factory food., Avoid salt (sodium),Avoid all Restaurant food is Cooked with MSG and lots of sodium and “damaged” toxic fats.

Eat for your “”blood type” ( Dr. D’Adamo’s Blood Type Diet) is a good diet for losing weight.Very important If you eat high protein diet with vegetable high in fibre make sure you take vitamin B-6, B-12, choline, Vitamin C 3 grams a day to keep your “homocysteins” low in your blood so you don’t get heart disease.Avoid all white flour, beans, corn but eat vegetables. Avoid damaged fats,no cheese, no frying, no mayonnaise. no salad dressings. No fruit juice, no fruits are very high in sugar. Also over eating too much protein will raise your insulin and cause you to gain weight. Eat small portions do not over eat on protein.

To detox your liver and bring down estrogen eat sulphur vegetables,Broccoli, cabbage, onions, garlic,Red beets et.. Best supplement for the liver is ;Water with lemon, Trimethylglycine (TMG), malic acid and “liopic acid “.

“Excess sugar “”eventually affects every organ in the body, but initially, it is stored in the liver in the form of glucose (glycogen). Since the liver’s capacity is limited, a daily intake of refined sugar (above the required amount of natural sugar) soon makes the liver expand like a balloon. When the liver is filled to its maximum capacity, the excess glycogen is returned to the blood in the form of fatty acids.
These are taken to every part of the body and stored in the most inactive areas: the belly, the buttocks, the breasts and the thighs. But then it affects vital organs like the heart and the kidneys.reason two meals a day is so beneficial is because it keeps insulin low and GH high. Insulin is the main hormone in your body that is responsible for fat storage.

Every time we eat a meal “”insulin is raised””. When “insulin is high” you will not be burning fat or losing weight. GH -“Growth hormone” on the other hand is the main fat burning hormone in your body. Therefore it would make sense that we would want to increase this as much as naturally possible. A combination of “intermittent fasting” and only having two meals a day can increase GH Growth Hormone drastically. Increasing fat loss and weight loss results dramatically. (If you’re over 50 yrs. old and you have low testosterone take 50 mg. of DHEA hormone) and 6 mg. of mineral Boron.

Avoid all soy and flax seeds oils and fish oils supplements, avoid all polyunsaturated oils and food. Soy and flax seeds Though are not a chemical estrogen, but it is a plant-based estrogen, and can throw off your hormonal balance. Eat a anti-estronic diet,Vitamin B-6,100 mg a day its good to take to lower estrogen ; Work out: Studies show that moderate exercise lowers estrogen levels.

A 2013 study also found that aerobic exercise helps the body break down estrogen so it’s easier to flush away. Get enough sleep: When you don’t get enough sleep, you can not lose weight make sure you go to bed early 10:00 p.m… The levels of the so-called “sleep” hormone called melatonin is disrupted and you will not lose weight! sleep!

    Turns out that melatonin hormone has a protective effect against “”excess estrogen”. A 1999 study, for example, showed that melatonin helped block the growth of “”estrogen-induced cancer cells””. Use a water filter: Public water supplies often contain chlorine, fluoride, and other industrial chemicals that act as xenoestrogens. Use a quality filter to reduce your exposure best book for weight lose ;

The only thing that doesn’t raise the insulin hormone is plain water.Go buy this book and read it at least 4 times until all the information in the book is memorised in your brain ; The book by Dr. Jason Fung called ; The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss https://www.amazon.com/Obesity-Code…/dp/1771641258

    The Case Against Sugar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQsRJTnwgkE

    ,,

  • Sugar is not the only problem. Nathan Pritikin identified that the American diet was around 43% total calories fat. The rest is refined or junk carbs lacking in fibre. Whereas in countries with no degenerative disease they eat 15-25% fat and complex carbs. Ironically taxing sugar leads to more obesity as artificial sweetners induce a larger prolonged insulin spike than sucrose. Sugar is completely natrual but we should not eat it in excess as it’s empty calories Fat is a much more potent cause of high blood pressure than salt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcHHDmuyPv4

  • Something really important that people who say they cannot quit sugar tend to forget: the more sugar you eat, the more you need for things to taste very sweet. My first boyfriend always drank several cans of energy drink per day and said that fruit doesn’t taste sweet. I thankfully always hated energy drinks (if you open a can in the same room I am in, I become very nauseous), but I did eat al lot of processed foods with loads of sugar for a long period of time. This was also the time I didn’t feel much for fruit. As I stopped eating so much sugary food, fruit started tasting more and more sweet.
Such transitions can suck, but ultimately it is just a few weeks or months that are absolutely worth it.

I think this is very similar to transitioning from omnivorous to vegan. I went slowly, just eating meat less and less often untill I went pretty much completely vegan. Near the end, meat started tasting so disappointing. My boyfriend is going through the same thing now, commenting on how weird it feels. He recently ate a wiener roll because he was really hungry and that was what friends had put on the table and he used to love those. He was surprised to find that he did not enjoy it at all.

Tldr: humans are creatures of habit and so are our tongues. You get used to the flavours of things you eat regularly. Change what you eat and after a little while you will prefer the new thing over the old. If you give it time, you will start to like healthy stuff that you maybe did not like before

  • Frank Tufano is more convincing these days than Gary Taubes. Still interesting to see him try to raise funds for NuSI tho. He’s not giving up, nor changing his mind on any of this.

  • I must agree. Refined sugars (maple syrup and honey included) are absolute train-wrecks for human health, at least as bad as refined vegetable oils and animal oils.

  • Gary Taubes’ lectures get better and better. He, Robert Lustig, Noakes and others should look both ways before crossing the street.

  • presjo If you eat refined carbs that spike your insulin a lot but in a calorie restricted diet you can still get fatter and starve internally. Moreover, the insulin spikes will make you moody and wanting to eat more. Excessive eating is a function of hormonal changes that happen when spiking insulin. The only way to get people on a hypo-caloric, sugar only diet, is to lock them out and force them to eat what you want, otherwise the whole body would be against it. As soon as they are free of the diet they’ll eat even more than before. Hypo caloric carb based diets never work long term.

As to the cholesterol story, all statins, cholesterol lowering drugs, target an enzyme called HMG-CoA Reductase which is responsible for bootstrapping the metabolic pathway that produces LDL particles. The HMG-CoA Reductase activity is up-regulated by INSULIN. This is why insulin is a bad thing to spike on daily basis.
This is stuff we already know, we have Nobel prizes based on this[1, 2].

This is why you can find raw vegans with high cholesterol and omnivores with low cholesterol. Cholesterol level is not a function of dietary cholesterol but of insulin level and, in rare cases, genetics.

Because of high blood sugar, that spikes the insulin, LDL is also more likely to get glycated or oxidised, lose its 3D shape so the liver will never be able to recycle it, at which point it becomes small and dense and atherogenic.

The shitty thing is, we know insulin upregulates cholesterol production but we give people pills instead of telling them the truth, which is to lower their insulin.

To conclude here is a good quote with no studies but which I believe to have a lot of truth in it.

“Your health and likely your lifespan will be determined by the proportion of fat versus sugar you burn over a lifetime… and that will be determined by the communication of hormones.
You should eat today to control the hormones that will tell you what you will need to eat tomorrow.”
    Dr. Ron Rosedale

  • No one is proposing that processed sugar is a health food. If you ask anyone drinking soda or putting sugar in their coffee they will not argue that they are doing so because of the health benefits, but for the taste and quick acting energy, it provides. But people who crave and add processed sugar in their diet is primarily because they are eating inadequate unrefined starches (potatoes, oatmeal, rice, corn, beans, whole grains). And if Gary Taubes follows a low-carb diet and doesn’t add sugar, it is likely because he his highly motivated by selling books, not because he doesn’t have sugar cravings on a low-carb diet, no?

  • Capitalism has nothing to do with it. Capitalism has been long gone from these shores for some time now. Cronyism has taken its place. Thanks to socialism. Geeez. Read a damn book.

  • I should stash some refined sugar away so that when it becomes illegal within the next 20 years (hopefully) I can make a profit

  • Could someone pinpoint the ‘sugar’ being discussed in this talk, and in the comments? To make a start: is it the sugar of white table sugar? Or crystalised brown sugar? Or demerara sugar? Or the glucose units of starch? Or the fructose units in asparagus and leeks? Or the units of sugar that make up the beetle and grasshopper shells that many ‘land’ people eat? Or the sugar units that comprise insoluble fibre?

  • I love you information….. and I know you say it all the time, however you should be more happy the your saying then really Bored.

  • For the case against Gary Taubes watch the excellent videos in the Plant Positive channel. That is if you are ready to evaluate the veracity of what Taubes is trying to sell you and have the patience to sit through a careful examination of the low-carb claims and the actual studies.

  • It’s over consumption Gary. That’s the problem.
That nonsense you spurt about person a eats twice as much and is half your weight is nonsense.
The person who eats more and is lighter needs more to sustain.
It’s individual to each person on earth. We all have different calorie needs

  • Brian for your cancer research for your brother… Ty Bollinger is also a good resource on cancer good luck.

    https://oneradionetwork.com/?s=Pancreatic+cancer

  • h snap, latest Nusi (run by Taubes) funded study, keto offers no metabolic advantage. Lowcarber prominents in damage control mode. Taubes has since disowned the study, yeah, rejecting the science when it doesn’t support your views. Throw science out the windows. lol
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8dE_leVJ0E

  • I can’t track down the article where I read it, but something like 30+% of all food stamp money is spent on soft drinks. Let that sink in…

  • Yeah, the last question was addressed very clearly. Only when it comes to food do we talk about consumption, and refer to dose “too much” and “moderation.” Well articulated, Gary.
To my mind, sugar (the refined industrial product) is no more a food than alcohol is. It should at least be reclassified or put in the same category as alcohol as far as nutritional value.
