Here is something that many of you might not know about me. I hate exercise. I don’t just dislike it. I have a genuine hatred for it, which is funny considering that I was a regional manager for a fitness chain for 10 years.

I know that we need exercise. I know that it is good for us & all that other mumbo jumbo & I respect those of you that. Exercise sucks”!! Well he was laughing, and me and the guys I was talking to just looked at him, and laughed aswell.

But by the look of him there was no wonder he thought “exercise sucks” it looked as if he had not done any exercise for a long time – maybe since he was at school. Hoshimoto’s Disease and PCOS sucks. Here’s what I’ve learned.

First of all, Happy Valentine’s Day you beautiful people! Eat some chocolate and smell some flowers. Don’t get me wrong, I love social media, I love seeing photos of myself and how my body’s changed since starting to exercise regularly, but there’s a time and a place ladies and gents – Grunter’s Corner is not it. And there you have it.

A quick workout or walk stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Increases your energy levels. Regular physical activity boosts your endurance, and.

Seriously though, it’s not enough to say you’re going to exercise — you have to actually do it (gasp!). Here’s how to suck it up when you prefer pastries to push-ups.

These two reasons alone demonstrate why it’s easy to find other things to do instead of exercise; you’d rather spend your limited free time doing something you enjoy instead of something that feels awkward or uncomfortable.

  • Thanks for the encouragement, Ben. My picking does suck. My right and left hands have their own minds. I’m working on a Mr. Spock-like mind meld for the two. Eventually, I won’t create music that sounds inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. As for now, it’s back to the music of Cthulhu.

  • Circular pick motion helped me greatly strings skipping/changing. It increases your range greatly in opposition to standard up-down motion.

  • I just came off a 5th metatarsal fracture and that was exactly how I felt! Now I’m more hungry and determined than ever to actually get not only back to where I was, but excel further as well. Baby steps as hell!

  • A thick 2.5 Jim Dunlop pick drastically I’ll mproved my accuracy and speed. You have to give it a weeks worth of getting use to. I chose these pick because guitarists were stealing my picks.

    Keep in mind, Billy Gibbons and Brian May use Mexican and English coins respectively.

  • You’re an amazing teacher. I’m not making much progress, but I’m not really putting in that much effort; I play about 30 minutes a day, and much of that is just focusing on very basic things that I never learned properly since I just taught myself guitar by learning my favorite songs. I’m trying at the moment to fix basic flaws, like I was using your Hand Synchronization exercise and I noticed that strings were ringing when they shouldn’t be, so I’m working on properly muffling them when leaving the string. I am trying to focus on a clean technique, and hope speed will come.

  • @Ben Eller I used your picking exercises, I went from difficulty picking Green Day’s September Ends to alternate picking the Guitar Duel scene from Crossroads……I wouldn’t call that massive gains.

  • One more variation (actually 2-4) I think are important to include descending finger pattern but ascending across the strings (E.G. starting on the low E: 4, 3, 2, 1, then 4 on the A string). Likewise, the reverse pattern; ascending per finger, but descending per string (e.g starting on the high E: 1, 2, 3, 4, then 1 on the B string). You could also add the string-skipping version of both of those.

  • Mental is the toughest part. I had my prostate taken out and was out of commission for a few months before I could go back to the gym. Had to ease into it.

  • I had vertigo about a year ago and this morning I just woke up and I got dizzy turning my head or flipping over in bed. So basically i got it back. I hope these exercises work.

  • People should also practice their strums alone include gallop, palm muted down strokes, and down ups. Practice each for 3 to 5 minutes a time.

  • I just had it all of a sudden, could it be because I’ve been sleeping late or overusing my phone for gaming? I still have it and the symptoms won’t instantly go away, but I must try this exercise you have taught here. Thank you!

  • Thanks for lesson, Ben. Really needed this exercise before even getting into likes of shredding or fast strumming. I noticed that my picking was definitely missing an element while trying to alternate pick and learning other things simultaneously. Taking a step back to improve on this on its own was just what I needed. Thanks again.

  • Been using this for some time. Thanks so much. Anyone have any suggestions on how to correct volume on alternate picking? Been fighting with it for weeks, trying to pay attention to keep the right hand movement balanced…while I do tend to play cleaner now for some reason, no matter the pick angle, I tend to hit harder downward than coming up. Driving me crazy. OCD is a hell of a drug.

  • im backwards, i play right handed but am left handed. could never switch now, too many years this way. however i wonder if the problems will eventually outweigh the benefits (left hand advantage vs right hand disadvantage) i struggle with sweeping likely bc of my backwards playing, as the strugll is my picking hand

  • When this guy plays legato lines, his thumb is in the middle of the neck. I have the palm of my left hand basically cupping the top of the neck. Have I been playing wrong this whole time?

    How if when i do this treatment but im feeling so so dizzy, i’m try one time only one side with open eyes but everything move and make me so dizzy, is it ok to continue even still feeling so dizzy after 30 second? Or i must wait until not feeling dizzy then wake up and changes to other side?

  • I have small hands. I love the way necks feel on Ibanez guitars. Do you think that if you take an Ibanez Wizard neck with a 15.75 radius (like on the Jem Premiums) it woiuld be easier for smaller hands or if ya took a Wizard Neck with a 17inch radius (even though normally at that point they are Super Wizards, like on the Genesis guitars). My wife wont let me buy guitars often lol so i need to make the most of when I am ALLOWED to get them. And thank you soooo much for your lessons. You really do a great job of getting your point across and making things easy for us old people to understand:)

  • Tried it.. Daughter just kept making me repeat the workout for the song. Did 3 of them. Probably won’t be doing day 2.. I’ve had training partners but kids are brutal.

  • I just started your recommended exercises today. Is this related to RA? I I’ve been battling with it for 3 weeks. I have meds but not sure they are helping though it’s not as bad as it was but this morning I had a good spin happen. Hoping my world stops spinning with your exercises ��

  • Starting with upstrokes actually really helped me when I started doing it simply by not having to jump over a string to hit the other string.

    The only thing I would add here is to make sure to accents on the 1 count or even the downbeat if you prefer. It helps the phrasing stay clear at high speed. Good luck! Great vid.

  • I was working out for 4 months making great progress then I injured my back and I haven’t been able to work for 6 months now I lost everything that I gained and I’ve never been so aggravated and depressed working out made me happier than anything in the world I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to lift weighs again my back won’t heal and get better I’m hoping for a miracle to get better.

  • Bernth, I have a problem. Five years ago I broke my left pinky and I had to go to therapy just to be able to move it. Luckily therapy worked, I got the mobility back and I can even stretch it a lot. The problem comes when I do trills or just hammer ons and pull offs, if I try to do it fast it really starts to hurt and I’m worried if that is something that only happens to me or if it happens to everyone, because the pain generally comes from the joint I damaged years ago

  • Mam, Few months back I got fever then dizziness has started. Fever was gone but dizziness remains. Recently I went to hospital and took ecg test and doctor said everything is fine. But I feel light dizziness, why so..?

  • Bro I had a very similar injury plus recovery. Thing is depression anxiety got the better of me and I put on a lot of weight. I’m slowly learning trying to eat better but with my physical job I just don’t see working out. Anyway love all the videos it’s definitely inspiring keep them going please.

  • This is what i really need. Have been suffering from an herniated disc with sciatica pain for a couple of weeks with several months of not doing any formal strength training ahead of me. The mental aspect is really what hard, going away from something you love that much.

  • Had ankle surgery myself on New year’s Eve and just now feeling good enough to try to workout but between a 1 year old and being bound to the couch and eating crap I’ve gained over 20lbs but I have a plan and it starts with doing P90x at home till I can get in a gym. Any other suggestions?

  • i been getting sick a lot lately, working out and then not working out, then working out for a while now not working out again. you lose a lot of progress very fast, one or two weeks off will turn your six pack into a squishy flat surface surprisingly fast. its very discouraging. the mental struggle really is the hardest part like you said.

  • I used that exercise, and then three notes per string, two notes per string, and now I’m still working on alternate picking one note per string.

  • Literally called my mom crying cuz I knew that I was just experiencing this. She used to have vertigo but started doing exercises as soon as she knew about them and now no longer has vertigo.   • Im more amazed by the fact that your scar didnt get swolen like mine and its in a more conceal able spot. Fyi, i did everything the doctor told me not to do during recovery including diet, light exposure and physical contact. Good luck recovering.

  • I gave up after 6hrs a day 7 days weight training was said to be unhealthy etc etc this guys not trained 7 days for 1/4 day for years I was huge for 3 years then got fat coz of hunger

  • i didnt feel very dizzy during the lying exercise but now that I’ve finished I actually feel dizzy and nauseous, is that normal or is the exercise not right for me?

  • With the first exercise, Is the 30 seconds the maximum or the minimum? If I go into one position and I have no dizziness, do I go to the next position or do I still wait the 30 seconds? If I still have dizziness after 30 seconds, do I wait until it stops? Thank you. I did purchase the handout but it doesn’t say which.

  • Good morning, iv’e been dizzy for 5 days i, i can’t lay down easily, and i ‘m feeling my room is spinning.. my hearing is fine.. i can’t go to see personally for check -up because Here in our town in the Philippines implementing ECQ because of the pandemic happening..private clinics were closed and hospitals temporarily don’t accept check ups

  • Thanks doctor Jo. Went to ER with dizziness and Vomiting. They said Benign positional vertigo. They gave me written instructions but I was doing them wrong. I hope this helps me I am at a stand still with this vertigo.

  • My neck is automatically turning left side. I have no control over itShaking head is also happening Please tell me some exercises?

  • I stopped playing for around 5 years and picked guitar back up again recently. Double picking is the only thing that really went downhill for me. I can still sweep pick, but I’m actually having to do drills to get my double picking back up to par again. I would have thought it would be the other way around. Sweep picking used to be the holy grail of guitar playing for me but the better and older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized that A) It’s not as hard as it seems and B) It’s more of a “salt and pepper” kind of thing. A lot of music tries to make it the main course and usually suffers as a result.

    Double picking, however, is relevant and prevalent throughout all genres of music. Practice your double picking folks.

When i was laying on the left nothing happened, but as I was laying on the right side i felt like my head is moving and felt very dizzy and felt like omitting, so I stopped midway, any diagnosis or suggestions for me please, what may be the cause. I have never experienced something like this before

  • 58 Y/O learning again after 30 years.I accidentally found your videos.I subscribed and am learning a lot.I think after 6 months into it again i am doing great and learning so much.My fingers are getting a lot faster.I remember i couldn’t even do scales.Now my speed has really picked up and i can see that i have made huge progress. Thanks for the help!! I guess im not too old to learn again??!!:)))

  • You are a life saver, I woke yesterday with this condition, have a friend who had it years ago, but for me was the first time and it scared the hell out of me, researched the net and ended up here with your video, on the first day I got a huge improvement, I get it the most when laying on the right side and I think know it because I was diagnosed with hearing loss years ago and have tinnitus 24/7 and wax produce especially with right ear and I think have the right inner ear infected….thank you for spreading your knowledge for free.

  • what about guthrie govan’s left hand technique? he has a very unique way of using his left hand, especially talking about the fast runs cuz he is using a very streched position simiular to the all around” position used then playing blues (pentatonic/banding phrases) with big finger up the neck not down

  • Was diagnosed with bbpv a couple years ago and never offered any help or resolution. I get these episodes where I’m dizzy for a couple days every month or so, but only upon standing and bending over. Are headaches common with bppv as well?

  • I came here because I realized my picking sucks. Also my strumming sucks. I’ve been just accepting that sometimes I strum too many (or too few) strings all the time. When I play arpeggios I hit the wrong strings all the time. I don’t want to do that any more! Please help, Uncle Ben!

  • My left hand works great. It’s my dang right hand that keeps plucking the wrong strings or deadening my string when I’m trying to do a squealie. Maybe I should be a left-handed guitarist.

  • Do the 4 note per string exercise (or any 4 note per string scale). starting on down stroke and up stroke ascending and descending…you hit inside and outside picking. The problem is everyone gets caught up and starting with a down stroke..gotta do both.

  • The good thing about training is muscle memory. I’ve had breaks of 6-7 weeks a couple of times in the last couple of years and it was clearly visible in the mirrow but when you start training on a regular basis again the strength and size comes back really quickly.

  • Thank you for this video. I’m glad you have found your motivation again. I’ve been in a similar situation. I had cancer and my surgery was 8 weeks ago. I’m proud to say they successfully removed my tumor and I am cancer free. They also removed my lower and middle lobe. So I’m trying to get used to my new lung capacity. I started working out and eating healthier again. I’m taking it easy like you and conditioning my body with light weights.

  • Interesting, but my pinky doesn’t really fly in these sequences of index, ring and pinky, it bends away in sequences of index, middle and pinky, also I developed some weird abnormal dependence between my ring finger and pinky, that whenever I try to make an index, middle and pinky sequence, the ring follows all the way and touches the string before the pinky, same things happens in sequences that use index and pinky only. My hands are having problems even doing simple chords now, like I don’t have the strength to hold them. Maybe I developed some hand condition, I was thinking it was tendinitis, or RSD, but my hand doesn’t hurt, I just have these problems and my fretting hand feels weaker than my picking hand. Maybe it’s some muscular weakness, I dunno.

  • Hi Dr. Jo I don’t get dizzy when doing this. My dizziness only happens when I’m sitting, I don’t feel it when driving or walking. I was diagnosed with bppv about two weeks ago. Does it go away?
