Presentation by Deanna Minich, PhD, CNS, FACN. Given on Friday, November 15, 2013. From the 54th Annual Conference of the American College of Nutrition, Controversies in Nutrition.
Sadhguru looks at the importance of paying attention, and how attention is the fundamental basis to ensure success in whatever we take up. He speaks of the structure of the mind from the yogic perspective, and looks at chitta, the aspect of the mind that is connected with the consciousness. “What shape you give to your chitta, it will always manifest in the world”, he says.. About INSIGHT: The DNA of Success. “INSIGHT: The DNA of Success” is a four-day business leadership intensive conducted by the Isha Leadership Academy, which blends the art of scaling up one’s business with the science of inner wellbeing.. This year, business icon Ratan Tata will join Sadhguru, Ram Charan, GV Prasad (Co-Chairman and CEO, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.) and 21 other senior business leaders from Nov. 27 30, 2014 at the Isha Yoga Center, Coimbatore.. http://www.ishainsight.org, +91 83000 84888, [email protected] ****************************************. Transcript: http://isha.sadhguru.org/blog/video/why-we-should-pay-attention/. Sadhguru: If you’re not paying attention to what I’m saying, would you know what I’m talking? No. That’s so with every aspect of life, isn’t it? If you’re not paying attention to it, you don’t know what you’re eating, you don’t know what you’re breathing, you don’t know what’s happening. Most people will not notice the fragrance of the flowers or anything; they’re just walking through like rocks or al… let me say a bull because they want to… you know a bull is worshipped in the stock market (Laughs). So, it’s a (an?) evolutionary fallback. If you walk like a bull or a bear, you… it’s an evolutionary fallback. You’ve evolved to be a human being, taking millions of years, now you don’t want to fall back. To be human means…what is unique about a human being is – we do the same things, what the other animals do – it is just that all that the animal can do, we do the same things but we can do it consciously. That’s a big difference. And doing anything consciously will not come if the… you don’t have sufficient attention towards things that you do or things that you do not do. Especially things that you do not do – you must have absolute attention towards those, otherwise they’ll creep into you (Laughs).. So this Attention Deficiency Syndrome has happened because people’s idea of education is information. Right now the whole idea of human education system has become heaping you with information. The more information you heap upon on any mind or let’s say starting from childhood, the more he will develop aversion to attention because without knowing anything, information gives you a false feeling that you know everything. This has become a fashion now. Today if you’re invited for a dinner party,. You Google out information about the hundred billion galaxies; they’ve all been numbered and named and all that, okay? That… That 556BZ, that galaxy, you know? About that you know some information. You Google out, get these two sentences out and go to the dinner party. Whoever talks to you, they say, “How are you?” “Hey do you know about this galaxy which is a… a trillion mi… light years away which is BB…” whatever and you talk about it. Everybody thinks you’re smart. This is the whole problem with the world right now. We’re considering information…. In this video I discuss Phytonutrients, what they are, their benefits, and sources high in them.. Transcript. Phytonutrients. Whats up dudes, and whats up ladies, Bryan here and in this video we are going to look at phytonutrients.. What they are, sources high in them, and how they may help enhance life. So, Lets roll.. What are phytonutrients? Phytonutrients, which are also called phytochemicals, are chemicals produced by plants. Plants use them to protect from insect attacks, and against radiation from UV rays.. They also provide plants with their sensory characteristics such as their color, flavor and smell. Researchers believe that up to 40,000 phytonutrients will someday be classified and understood.. Phytonutrients can also provide significant benefits for humans who eat plant foods. Vitamins and minerals are essential for life, phytonutrients are not, however, when you consume them they may help prevent disease and help your body function properly.. Some of the benefits of phytonutrients include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; they may also enhance immunity, repair DNA damage from toxins, and increase intercellular communication.. They may also reduce heart disease risks, and they have shown promise in the area of cancer prevention.. Phytonutrient rich foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, teas, herbs and spices.. Bottom line time. The best way to increase your consumption of phytonutrients is by including a variety of plant based foods in your diet. Try to eat fruits and vegetables with vibrant colors and foods that have gone through the least amount of processing.. Alright, if you have any questions or comments you can leave them below, if you like the video hit thumbs up, if you didn’t like the video hit the thumbs down…til next time, im out, see ya.. What is barely visible to the unaided eye, helps create a large share of the world’s oxygen, but also has the power to disrupt aquatic food webs and have devastating effects on the natural and human world? Phytoplankton are the worlds tiny responders, helping and hurting environments as they interact with elements surrounding them. In this talk, phytoplankton ecologist Reagan Errera shows why the tiny single-celled life forms deserve a little more respect. In research ecologist Reagan Errera’s opinion, phytoplankton, the microscopic algae and other organisms floating in unfathomable numbers throughout the world’s oceans, don’t get the proper respect they deserve. In reality, these tiny single-celled life forms are just as important as trees, cleaning the air we breathe and impacting the global climate in profound ways. A native of Florida, Reagan developed a fascination for algae blooms as an undergraduate studying abroad at the University of Queensland in Australia. She continued her passion for ocean science at Texas A&M, earning a master’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences and her PhD in Oceanography. Today she is a research ecologist with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, researching phytoplankton ecology with a special focus on global climate change and harmful algal species that produce a variety of toxins. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
A quick and easy way to improve your overall health-it may sound too good to be true, but doctors say adding more phytonutrients to your diet can improve how you feel. “They are the small vital nutrients that we get from plants that we can’t make on our own,” said Dr. Heather Auld, an integrative medicine physician with Lee Health.. Phytonutrients supply all the minerals and vitamins our body needs. “They are antioxidants; they are cancer-fighting, they are immune system building, there’s nothing really that they can’t do,” she said.. Different fruits and vegetables contain different phytonutrients, but all work together in your body to increase energy, fight disease and strengthen your immune system. “You should feel like you can conquer the world. You would have more energy, fewer aches and pains, and you would have a good immune system,” said Dr. Auld.. Patients would also be able to feel if they weren’t getting enough phytonutrients. “It could be your immune system, which you just keep getting reoccurring colds. It could be that you just don’t have the energy that you normally had. It could be that you get the same reoccurrence of a symptom,” she said.. A blood test can determine if you are getting enough phytonutrients. “Some people use more of a certain kind of phytonutrient, and some people are more depleted because they expel it or use it up rapidly, so you can really measure them and you don’t have to guess,” said Dr. Auld.. Doctors recommend eating foods like berries, drinking green tea, even eating dark chocolate to help get the phytonutrients you need. “The other thing would be turmeric. It’s a spice. When you eat turmeric, and you have another spice in it, it brings out the added properties in that other spice as well,” she said.. Eating different types of fruits, vegetables and spices allow the different phytonutrients to work together synergistically to improve your health.. Simply put, phytonutrients are chemical compounds in plants that protect it from germs, pests, and environmental toxins. They have discovered up to 40,000 different ones and are still discovering more. It appears as though it’s not just the vitamins and minerals that make vegetables so good for us. 5 reasons you need more Phytonutrients in your diet: 1. They protect us from inflammation Inflammation is the common link between chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and many more. Seventy or eighty years ago, the main nutritional interest of most Americans was getting enough food to eat and avoiding diseases caused by vitamin deficiencies, such as scurvy or beriberi.
The reason why phytonutrients are of such interest is that they may reduce the risk of certain diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Vitamins are also essential in preventing or curing certain deficiency diseases such as scurvy, beriberi, rickets, malnutrition, loss of appetite, poor physical growth, eye infection, nervous breakdown, etc., caused by the absence of vitamins in the food or their faulty absorption due to intestinal troubles.
Another more recent study with adults using CSFII data found that adults with more nutrition knowledge consumed more fruit and vegetables (Guthrie et al., 2005).
Phytonutrients are thought to serve as antioxidants, enhance the immune system, convert vitamin A, and repair damage caused by smoking and other toxic exposures—all of which reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.
These phytonutrients are important to anti-aging and fighting free radicals that cause oxidative stress, which has been linked with age-related mental disease such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Not paying attention was my biggest problm…I was not able to keep my focus even for few seconds but after entering into self awareness,it has increased a bit n I feel more at ease with more confidence
I take thousands of milligrams of vitamin C when I get an abscess in my tooth and the absence goes away or ear infection and the ear infection goes away
Very good talk! I myself have studied food chemistry, and am making food/health related videos these days (check out my channel if you please). I have come to realise that these antioxidants work in a very synergisitic manner, and hence they should be had as a part of whole foods, and not individual supplements.
Natural compounds derived from plant are called phytonutrients, which are powerful defenders of health. They have shown to reduce the risk of certain diseases and slow the aging process thereby promoting health. In the human body, phytonutrients stimulate enzymes that help the body to boost the immune system, promote healthy estrogen metabolism, improve cardiovascular health, get rid of toxins and stimulate the death of cancer cells.
Today, phytonutrients act as a base compound for more than 40% of medications and are used in the treatment of a wide-range of diseases.

Actually the isolation of alpha tocopherol was probably the biggest mistake in nutritional history. The following video describes this mistake in detail as well as demonstrates why it fails as an antioxidant. https://youtu.be/V9zHfSIPdSo
Thanks for the lecture. I’m doing some research on this matter to get the effects of phytochemicals clear for myself and others. One question though. if i go to the 5aday website i cant open the site. Is there another website for me who has the same kind of information that also is certified by experts and/or a big organisation? Kind Regards, Kevin
Nice presentation but really a decade too late if not 20 years. And the constant reference to science is because the damned audience is studied stupidity, medicos. And the sad part this lecture 20 years from now with 50 years of research will still be met with doctor arrogance and opposition. I have come to view doctors in the same negative light as lawyers.
Funny how from 23.8M subscribers only 2,289 have watched this video, probably half of the views are not even subscribers. We really care about this planet, the numbers shows:)
