Below is a sample menu of what 1,200 calories looks like on the DASH diet, along with a couple of additions for people following 1,500-calorie diets. BREAKFAST. LUNCH. SNACK.

DINNER. DESSERT. ADDITIONS FOR 1,500 CALORIE DIETS: MID-MORNING SNACK. LUNCH. When following a 1,200-calorie DASH diet, you can have three servings of nuts, seeds or legumes a week.

One serving equals one-third of a cup of nuts, 2 tablespoons of seeds or a half cup of legumes, such as kidney or garbanzo beans. Avoid nuts with added salt or sugar, and if you go for canned beans, look for the ones labeled low sodium. 1,200 Calories: Day 1 Target: 5 grain, 3 fruit, 4 vegetable, 2 dairy, 1 1/2 meat, 1/4 nuts/seeds/legumes, 1/2 added fat, 1/2 sweets Breakfast (200 calories) 1 oz. uncooked oatmeal, cooked with water (cooks to about 3/4 cup), 1 grain (100 calories) 1 medium Pear, 2 fruit (100 calories) Morning Snack (180 calories) 1 oz. honey whole–wheat pretzels, 1 grain (110 calories). A 1,200-calorie diet can be an effective weight-loss strategy, but a strict diet plan can seem daunting.

  • Though this works, there are ways to eat 1200 and feel more satisfied. Replacing a smoothie in the morning with egg white with spinach or oatmeal is way more filling.   • Not realistic if you’re planning to feel full. I’m 5 feet so when I diet I have to do a 1200 calorie diet for my height and this is not sustainable. If you’re not vegan or vegetarian, a good breakfast option would be 1 whole egg and 2 egg whites scrambled along with half a cup of cooked oats with honey and blueberries. This will last you until lunch without a snack needed. Lunch a salad with small portion of chicken. Good snack would either be an apple with peanut butter or protein balls made with oats and and nut butter and for dinner a small portion of brown rice, veggies and a protein of your choice. If I want dessert I purchase pre portions mini ice creams around 80-100 calories. This is more realistic for me and I have lost weight this way. Hope this helps!

  • I’m starving to death ��������I did coconut yogurt this morning with 2 strips of turkey bacon and 1/2 a cup of a homemade vegan smoothie I made. For dinner I’m doing 8 ounces of wild caught sockeye salmon with fruit & 1/2 smoothie. I’m on the intermittent fasting plan 8 to 16. 2 meals a day. One in the morning one in the late after noon. Outside those hours I drink water and plain tea no sweetener. Also, I have immune support tea with each meal with apple cider vinegar in it….it’s working miracles…

  • Not accurate. They don’t eat oatmeal for breakfast in Southern Italy or Greece or Spain. They eat bread, usually with jam, or a hard biscuit, and coffee with milk. Sometimes plain yogurt with honey and fruit. No one snacks. This is healthier than the SAD but not by any means a traditional Mediterranean diet. Fail.

  • Not accurate. They don’t eat oatmeal for breakfast in Southern Italy or Greece or Spain. They eat bread, usually with jam, or a hard biscuit, and coffee with milk. Sometimes plain yogurt with honey and fruit. No one snacks. This is healthier than the SAD but not by any means a traditional Mediterranean diet. Fail.

  • I would love to try this. I am supposed to eat 1200 calories daily while I am not as active in the gym as normal until my knee heals. Everything looks very tasty.
