Why You’re Always Hungry, Tired or Both. Experiencing a late-afternoon energy crash, feeling ravenous hours after a hard workout or snacking into the night are all signs you may be too hungry. Feeling too hungry too often can lead to overeating and a seemingly never-ending battle with weight, satiety and energy levels. If you are always tired and hungry, several factors may be to blame.

Poor Diet. Two side effects of malnutrition are hunger and fatigue. These symptoms may be a result of an unbalanced diet or a deficiency in calories, both of which can rob your body of essential nutrients. Experiencing a late-afternoon energy crash, feeling ravenous hours after a hard workout or snacking into the night are all signs you may be too hungry.

Feeling too hungry too often can lead to overeating and a seemingly never-ending battle with weight, satiety and energy levels. More often than not, we think we’re hungry but in actual fact, we are just thirsty. Try drinking 500ml before each meal and see how much of a difference this makes. Emotional Eating. It’s a good idea to be weary of why you’re actually eating.

This sounds silly but sometimes you may find you’re eating because you are bored or stressed out.   • Eat more good fat and less or few processed carbs. Eating large amounts of crisps /chips, bread, potato or pasta won’t fill you. It will just inhibit your feeling full hormone leptin.

  • re: addiction, I think that the dopamine pathway is crucial as-well, not just adrenaline…

    I know that my dopamine pathway was set to Facebook, porn, and cannabis etc. Since cutting back on those and my gut microbiome getting back (all thanks to you <3 but it gives more cravings now) I think my system is dangerously close to food addiction. I have just started taking an antipsychotic whose principle side-effect is weight-gain as-well, so that's a factor too...

    It is strange though that I went from 1 meal a day and forgetting to eat to craving snacks all the time!

  • You missed one other really big one you are thirsty!
    Loads of people don’t drink enough water, then when mild thirst kicks in and their body doesn’t recieve water it will cry for food to draw hydration from that source instead. Thirst is often misteken by people as hunger in those earlier stages of dehydration.

  • I’m always tired. I get enough sleep and when I wake up I am soo tired. I have no strength and no energy. I lay down feeling tired when I haven’t even done really anything!   • Allergies can also make you feel very tired! I wear a mask outside to prevent breathing more pollen and it doesn’t 100% prevent pollen entering (gets on your clothes), but it helps a lot.

  • Both my husband and I have the feeling of being tired all day long. We wake up at 6am and go to bed around 10:30pm or even 11:00pm. That’s 7 hours of sleep and we feel so tired. We are young. He’s 20, I’m about to turn 22 this year and we both feel as if we were 60 years old. We won’t exercise because we feel so tired due to the schedule that we have to keep up every single day.   • I can’t say this enough, your videos are so so so helpful, I am learning so much! I’m always amazed about these people who say they forget to eat! I get all shaky and feel like I’m about to pass out if I don’t eat when I’m hungry, not every time but a lot of times. I just feel so bad for taking for granted my body & not givin it the attention and love it has given me my whole life! This video really speaks to me, it’s always already healing to feel understood and see that we are not alone in our struggles.

    I am in the process of changing my eating habits and one thing I noticed is that after eating something like bananas with other fruit I don’t feel the need for other snacks. While before, in the afternoon I ate a big piece of some sort of sweet bread or brioches or bread and nutella and after I still felt like I needed something more! Same with breakfast, now I eat a nice bowl of oatmeal and I’m fine until lunch while bedore I got really hungry after few hours!

  • Hi Peggy. This is so interesting and makes so much sense. I would also say that another temporary way to ‘switch off the adrenals’ is through deep diaphragmatic breathing or Pranayama practice. Enhances all you suggest and becomes easier and more calming with practice xxxx

I don’t have the tiredness during the day but always wanting to eat, but I think of it as a bad habit. I also have problems sleeping —going to sleep and staying asleep.   • My TSH7.5 and T3 and T4 are in normal range. Doctor’s saidauto immune thyroid and i need to take thyrox tablet but i took homeopathic medicine and my TSH came down from 10.5 to 5.5.

  • When I started on keto my “always hungry” feeling subsided. But now my body is back to feeling hungry none stop! I’m still losing weight thanks to keto, but very slowly. Thyroid issue has become a BIG BUSINESS in india and doctors don’t know anything and just say that 99% of all people have auto immune thyroid. I cant believe them.

  • I tried a high fat diet for a while, as a vegan I ate 3-4 avokados a day because I had nothing else to take to university. But sometimes I couldnt sleep at night because my body starved for carbs. Than I ate sweetpotatoes. But after a while I gained weight.

  • Sorry Doc, you are so wrong. I’m always hungry and I’m vegan. I can’t eat legumes (including peanut butter) or I’ll gain weight. Also, I have to limit my tofu. I eat lots of veg daily and fruit in the morning. I drink plenty of water also….still hungry…never satisfied!Shakes don’t help either…after an hour hungry again!!!

  • Here’s where I’m at…

    I know veggies are healthy for me. I just don’t always have the motivation to eat them.

    I know beans are healthy for me. Again, I don’t always have the motivation to eat them.

    I know seeds are healthy for me. I just don’t always have the motivation to eat them.

    I know nuts are healthy for me. But they are more expensive, somewhat. However, I need little motivation to eat them. They are filling.

    I know fruit is healthy for me, AND its tasty, and often fairly cheap. I don’t need much motivation to eat fruit, esp. if it is higher quality.

    I know grains are a mixed bag. On occasion, I’ll be in the mood for pasta or bread, but I tend to still go more the potato route here, or maybe rice…

    I don’t consume dairy, except for small amounts of ice cream and butter, esp. grass-fed butter.

    I eat eggs, fish, poultry, and all meats except for pork/bacon. I know this stuff is healthy for me, but not in large amounts. And it can get pretty expensive…

    Then we have junk food… Well, I can’t say I NEVER eat this stuff, even largely sticking more to the healthier junk food like dark chocolate, etc., but I have decided to not eat licorice. Junk food is cheap-er, somewhat. And most people I know eat more junk food than I do. Fruit juice and soda to a lesser extent are still rather tempting, esp. fruit juice.

    So I try to go shopping at healthier grocery stores, that are more ethical, etc. as well. But they are pretty darn expensive, unless you REALLY discipline yourself, or you just go vegetarian or something…

    And despite all these efforts, I still have to deal with people around me who are more unhealthy in some form or another. It’s really kind of annoying, because you discipline yourself to not eat junk food, and a roommate has a ton of junk food that he is sharing… ��‍♂️

    And this, most ALL of this, is what we continually have to contend with, Dr. Hyman… Its really, really frustrating at times…

  • Don’t fool yourselves. All you need to do to feel normal and full between the 3 meals is to eat and drink that comes from soil or animals, without getting packaged or processed. That is, avoid ALL, I mean ALL fast foods, icecream, desserts, sweets, sodas, energy drinks, etc. Eat bread, rice, fruit, veggies, and so stewed, baked, boiled, sauteed, grilled. Then, you’ll see that you are a true human, eating like a human. YET, even if you are eating this kind of healthy foods, you are spoiling it all just by ending up with having an icecream or doughnut, no matter how small the portion is. Just like cigrettes, you either smoke to face the consequences, or quit it all at once! No other solution.
