To start with, a “sugar alcohol” is neither a sugar nor an alcohol. Instead, sugar alcohols are plant-based carbohydrates chemically altered to taste sweet. They commonly appear on food labels as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, isomalt and hydrogenated starch hydrolysate.

Sugar alcohols are a category of sweet carbohydrates. Since sugar alcohols are partially resistant to digestion, they act like dietary fiber. They’re also a. While people might believe that sugar alcohols are a natural alternative, the truth is that most of these products are derived from genetically modified organism (GMO) crops. So not only are you eating something highly processed and created in a laboratory, but your body doesn’t know what to do with this man-made ingredient.

Sugar alcohols do contain carbs, so they do affect blood sugar, but since they are lower in carbs than real sugar and the body doesn’t fully absorb them, the effects are not as dramatic. “Because. While reading a nutrition label on a protein bar I recently purchased, I noticed they were boasting about the fact that their bar had ZERO GRAMS OF SUGAR. “Wow” I thought to myself. “That’s Great. Most protein bars are loaded with. Alcohol really does a number on your blood sugars.

Initially it raises them — especially if you’re consuming mixed drinks. Moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise. Sugar alcohols naturally occur in many fruits and vegetables, but are most widely consumed in sugar-free and reduced-sugar foods. The sweetness of sugar alcohols varies from 25% to 100% as sweet as table sugar (sucrose). The chemical structure of sugar alcohols is a hybrid between a sugar molecule and an alcohol molecule, hence the name, but they are neither one nor the other.

Sugar alcohols are sweeteners that have about half the calories of regular sugar. They occur naturally in certain fruits and vegetables, but some are man-made and are added to processed foods. Many. Sorbitol, and other sugar alcohols can be found naturally in some fruits and plants and they are used as low-calorie sweeteners in various food products because they aren’t easily digested. Being neither entirely sugar nor alcohol in nature, sugar alcohols are more of a hybrid between sugar molecules and alcohol molecules.

Xylitol, erythritol, mannitol, sorbitol, and maltitol are all different types of sugar alcohols. They are also called polyols.

The sugar alcohols commonly found in foods are sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, isomalt, and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates (HSH).

Sugar alcohols including sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol have comparable sweetness and about the same calorific content as sucrose but they are absorbed more slowly from the digestive tract and do not raise postprandial blood sugar and insulin levels and are therefore suitable for sweetening diabetic foods.

L eat 2 meals a day eat out at Windy’s once in awhile with my family or have tacos an sometimes l don’t gain a pound an l just keep going back on my diet to maintain my weight l don’t crave. Sweets any more my family comes over an they eat goodies an l just pass it up. But if it’s a Birthday l will eat a piece of cake an just cut a meal off at dinner the next day an am fine. Enjoy your shows l can’t afford to buy all that special flower an other Kato subs. I eat white bread with omaygo 3 eggs four eggs double sandwich l slice the eggs an use Miracle Whip light sprad on the bread. An l lost weight we eat at 5:00 pm daily so we aren’t going to bed on a full stomach. Thanks for your help

  • You mentioned you use Xylitol in your diet. Would be interested in learning your opinion about the pros and cons. Thanks for the info! As always, great stuff

  • I know this is a old post but I do have a question for you Dr. Berg or any one who knows the answer. Do you know if consuming any type of sugar alcohol by type 1 diabetes makes their body to create ketones inside the blood or not!!! My son is type 1 with great blood sugar control not high mostly but recently I noticed his blood and urine are showing sign of ketones (type 1) sometimes trace sometimes moderate moderation on 100 to 120 blood glucose range which is very unusual to me and even to his doctor….low blood sugar (well controlled) about 70 to 100 gram carb intake daily and ketones???? Could that be from sugar alcohol that is inside of his snacks such as cookies or ice creams( keto ice cream 3 gram carb )!!! He does not have any cold or flu, he is not dehydrated he has a low normal blood sugar he is on low carb but not extremely low (60 to 100 or even 100 gram carbd) he is 10 yr old and sometimes specially during night time ketones!!!!!!!! Why is that???Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Krisda Monk Fruit Sweetener. Contains only erythritol and monk fruit extract. A bit pricey, but I just use it for my morning coffee.
I found that stevia tainted the flavour of my coffee.

  • Thanks for the information. I eliminated sweets from my diet. I went to the doctor and my a1c was up. I walk or run 5 miles daily and still have a lil pooch. After watching this video I found that the sugar free powders I added to my water raised my blood sugar drastically and has been affecting my body as if I had eaten regular sugar.

  • I have ditched the sugar/carbs and have already lost over 7 kilos and feel a million times better for it, LCHF is the best diet I have ever adopted

  • Just eat real food…anything synthesized manufacture processed will ultimately not help you. If I eat ice cream it’s real ice cream if I eat pancakes they are real. Whatever I’ll never win a bodybuilder show but I’d rather be happy with no gastrointestinal problems. Just enjoy your one or two cheat meals a week and leave it at that.

  • You didn’t talk about sorbitol!? Good or Bad?? since GI is not always the indicator for the effect on Insulin and insulin resistance

  • I stopped doing the “*tols” ( any of the sugar alcohols) It didn’t agree with my stomach and I was experiencing symptoms of the leaky gut (when proteins pass into the blood) and it wasn’t good. I simply stick with stevia now, no more issues, down 75 lbs from my all time high.

  • I rarely use the sweeteners like he mentioned. But I have recently made a couple of desserts that used those sugar alcohols and just felt funny odd in my stomach. Some bloating and gas. FYI has anyone tried Rebel Ice Cream? Totally keto and the best thing out there. 7 to 9 grams of carbs per PINT. Delicious treat that doesn’t bother me in the sugar alcohols department. But I don’t remember what sweetener it uses. Google it. Super customer service and ships all over the US. Can be dangerous . Only sweet I indulge in when I can get it other than 92% dark chocolate. Happy New Years dr Berg and every one in KetoLand.

  • Thanks Doc found that really valuable what kind of fermentative properties do these alcohol surgars have in a aqueous solution and inoculated with a bacterial culture? We looking at goodtimes or a trip to the emergency room to have my stomach pumped?

  • Hi dr Berg. I recently started paying attention to food ingredients and realized how many food have dextrose but still say zero carbs. I noticed this in a pack of pepeoni. How is this possible, how can the label say zero carbs when the product has sugar in it?

  • Dr. Berg, please tell me if Dolcedi is keto friendly. Just discovered this today at Whole Food’s and it is the best tasting sweetener I have ever tasted. It’s made from apples and it’s low glycemic. But I value your knowledge, so please advise if this will knock me out if ketosis.

  • Will the artificial sweeteners kill useful bacteria to result in bloating, etc.?
    2. Coming to natural sugars, what about coconut sugar in diabetic point of view?
    3. Stevia has a terrible aftertaste.
    4. Taste wise, sucralose is good. But killing useful bacteria?
    5. Your personal preferancewhat is it’s name? Does it have useful-bacteria-killing property?

  • I use sugar alcohols and I have no problems. You just have to use it in moderation, eat healthy overall, and fast without consuming it. Meaning, when you are fasting you are NOT consuming anything sweet because it will fool the body into producing insulin, negating the fasting benefits. You only use sweeteners when it’s eating time. If something terrible is happening in your body you are just not healthy overall or you are one of the rare people that have a reaction to it. Sugar alcohol isn’t the root of the problem or that bad compared to other sweeteners or junk food.

  • DR BERG SHOULD GET A YOUTUBE AWARD FOR BEST PRESERVING PEOPLES TIME THE BEST! HE GETS STRAIGHT TO THE POUNT INSPIRING MY TIME TO CHECK OUT MANY MORE VIDEOS IN HALF THE TIME! He’s a pro at that and I find I have ZERO tolerance for all the YAPPING and ranting other youtubers do. No offense. But at my age I come to get the DEETS not your life story or the story your neighbor told you. Must be due to the ADHD generation. Shrugs

  • We should never touch the poisen called suggar is far best, i am suger free since four months or so lost 50ibs and feeling my best moments Alhamidulillah

  • Hi Dr. Berg, I just ate two bratwursts for dinner and the package said that they have dextrose in them. I am fasting at the rate of one meal a day and fasting for the rest of the time so nearly 24 hrs at a time. I am also only consuming black coffee and water. I was wondering if the dextrose in the brats will make me put on weight? I only eat brats once a month.

  • Sweets in general have been severely reduced in my food intake, some days it’s zero. Usually only use erythritol and stevia when I bake, and that’s really not very often.

  • Weird. Cos for me all of the above erithritol, erithitol is the only one that doesn’t give give me gas, even stevia makes me gassy

  • do you have any recommendations for a stevia, monk fruit, or combination of both? I am looking for a sweetener that does NOT cause farting. Thanks!

  • What is your opinion regarding Sodium cyclamate? Since most of the artificial sweeteners in Europe are made of Sodium cyclamate as well as aspartame and saccharine.

  • Personally sugar alcohols do not effect my digestion (or blood sugar) However I have heard of some people being effected in different ways mentioned in this video.
It definitely depends on the individual.

  • Maltitol is fine and does not kick you out of KETO. I’ve used it for months and remained in Keto. I’m 47. Not young, but Maltitol is one of the best bets if you like sugar free chocolate.

  • Introducing erithrytol made me gain up to twelve lbs, messed my stomach up bad…. I’m now back down seven lbs but I have seven more to go to get back to my normal… None of the cheap sweeteners ever did this to me over the years

  • Sugar alcohols as a temporary crutch to ideally wean oneself off of sweet cravings entirely, rather than using them as a permanent crutch to prolong the desire for sweets. Got it!

  • I agree with his final statements…I’ve been doing keto for a while now and I have no desire to make these keto desserts which is surprising since I always had to have chocolate throughout my day.

  • Hi Lacey! What protein powder do you use if splenda/sucralose doesn’t sit well with you? Most protein powders I see have sucralose and I would like to find a good one that doesn’t have that.

  • OMG this was right on time. I’m up a few lbs after some holiday keto treats. NO WONDER. I am super sensitive to the sugar alcohols but didn’t realize they cause the water retention.

  • I consume about 60+ packets of twin sugar / Splenda / sweet n low everyday….I’m beginning to feel very concerned for my health and don’t know what to do its like I’m addicted!!

  • Thank You For The Good videos and Today I’m In My Third Day of fasting. Only drink water with Lemon and Coffee and tea. What about Dry fasting without water? I am now 59 years old and 65 kilo. And was a cheating Omad. In The Evening walnuts and cheese. My skin had histamine problems, I think.

  • On almost every “stop drinking” youtube channel the people tell about weight loss after cutting out the booze, which is nothing but a drug toxin..

  • OMG this was right on time. I’m up a few lbs after some holiday keto treats. NO WONDER. I am super sensitive to the sugar alcohols but didn’t realize they cause the water retention.

  • omg i just had 150g sugar in sweets:*( plus some other sugars, please reply..have u ever binged similar??? ESPECIALLY RIGHT WHEN U NEED TO QUIT!!

  • Sugar alcohols as a temporary crutch to ideally wean oneself off of sweet cravings entirely, rather than using them as a permanent crutch to prolong the desire for sweets. Got it!

  • Sugar is every bit as addictive as cocaine, benzos etc and it’s dose dependent. THAT is the obesity cause. I fiend for sugar more than drugs and I have a huge alcohol/narcotic tolerance.

  • I quit sugar a year ago. not looking back. I don’t even get the idea of craving anymore. and the weightless and the economies I’ve made are huge

  • Sugar is every bit as addictive as cocaine, benzos etc and it’s dose dependent. THAT is the obesity cause. I fiend for sugar more than drugs and I have a huge alcohol/narcotic tolerance.

  • Hey Dr. Berg. What about sucralose? I’ve been drinking propel fitness water and I noticed it has sucralose in it. Is this Propel water going to knock me out of ketosis?

  • Alcohols Makes You Stupid alcohol is full of fluoride & Preservatives Sulfide & Nuclear Isotopes Most Of The Hops Come From Yakima Valley Hanford Plutonium Sill Killing Earth U Know?

  • Is maltodextrin and dextrose the same? I have been buying boxes and boxes of Stevia from Cosco for a long time and it has dextrose as the first ingredient. And I use it a lot and now I am doubting what I use. Does anyone know the answer to this?

  • Unless I missed it, they failed to share the recipes the soda guy came up with for drinks. Those looked pretty good. Would be interesting to know what they were. And perhaps helpful.

  • I gave up sugar 6 months ago. I was addicted to candy my whole life. I avoid sugar like the plague. I only use pure maple syrup in very small amounts in my coffee and oatmeal. I have not had one “sweet” in 6 months, no candy, no cookies, no cakes, no high sugar cereal. The first month was difficult, I was having bad cravings, but now the thought of candy and cookies makes me ill, I do not miss it at all. I have 3 teaspoons of pure maple syrup in my coffee and one teaspoon in my oatmeal. Around 4-5 teaspoons of pure maple syrup a day, that’s it. I do not use refined sugar at all. Soda is just stupid

  • Artificial sweeteners don’t seem to agree with me. The artificial sweeteners in chewing gum upsets my stomach, and aspartame gives me a headache within minutes. How can these artificial sweeteners really be safe for consumption when my body reacts so adversely?

  • When, at Medical School 40 odd years ago, I learned about sugar, I decided never to touch it again. Since then I read all labels of packaged food and just don’t buy it if the word “sugar” or “sucrose” is on it. Now almost EVERYTHING else taste sweet due to the sensitivity of the taste buds…

  • I dont eat items that have sugar alcohol unless I need to get very gassy and fog aisles in stores or just be obnoxious from farting all the time.

  • This video seems to say the problem with sugar is that it contributes to obesity and obesity is a factor in many diseases. However, the real problem is with liver fat (which was briefly mentioned around the male volunteer with the beard) and organ fat. The visible body fat doesn’t necessarily indicate higher risk. Type 2 diabetes (Processed Food Disorder) is growing as fast in thin populations as it is in fat populations. Sugar is addictive, causing a dopamine rush that gives us short term pleasure, but also inhibits long term happiness. So sugar isn’t just killing fat people. It is killing all of us, and creating pathways to addiction in children that make it easier to be addicted to other pleasures as an adult. Sugar is instant gratification, too much of which is poison to satisfaction.

  • I’m shocked! I’ve had what I thought is ibs for years. I’ve drunk 10 cans of Pepsi max a day since I was 16… I’ve got a lot to think about

  • When I cut all the sugars like soda, little Debbi, etc I also cut out pasta ,bread, etc but I did switch to bai water only because it has the sweetness I was looking for that soda offered. Been as sugar-free as I can be for five weeks and lost 19 pounds so far.Any insight on bai water

  • Through out high school I use to periodically chew close to a whole pack of gum at at time, and I would always have some sort of GI problem and I never new why until started looking at the ingredients and doing research on sugar alcohols and it was also clouding my mind also. I agree 100% with what you say.

  • OMG!! soo agreed! pills powders and potions…people its all processed foods…Whole food is always a better choice!…..The Best Fast Food…is the Food you prepare and can Grab and go Thanks Stan!!

  • Hey Stan, again thanks for sharing your view. I have experienced stomach issues when consuming dragonfruit, its one of the fruits i love the most. But it seems My body doesnt tolerate it. Any suggestion what causes this?

  • I started using erythritol serve form and love it. But since then I have been having cravings, brain fog etc. I was doing fine before. Wondering if it’s something else or if this is causing it. Any body else have this experience?

  • Stan I’m loving the diet so far. I was looking at my medical records and I had/have goiter and high BP. I’m looking forward to addressing the iodine issue and I’m guessing 😉 the bp will drop right along with the attention to that detail. I’m learning a lot man from your videos AND can’t wait to see cut some steaks out if this giant rack of meat I bought. It’s not as expensive as everyone says! Just gotta do a little butchering of your own and it’s damn near cheap. Excited about this diet man.

  • When you are trying to lose the cravings for sweets, how does it help to use crap that keeps it going? It’s like an alcoholic having just one drink…you sabotage your progress! I don’t ever use any products with stevia, erythritol, etc! Have totally lost my taste for anything sweet.

  • I drink coffee heard your earlier talks. It doesn’t bother my stomach. Not much does but I still have increased the amount of beef and rice I eat. I stopped taking protein powder all together. Feel great.

  • Stan has topped Mark Bell with his hilariously descriptive way to talk about Effing up the toilet. Love the rant. It explained a recent emergency u turn shortly after eating a couple quest bars.

  • Watched this with the window open because I was fluffing so much. I’m certain it was the sugar alcohols I ate 6 hours ago because I’ve been avoiding them lately but every single time I have some I always flufff like crazy. No more for me.

  • Those sugar alcohols are a disaster waiting to happen! got into my girlfriends stash and ate the entire bag of “sugar free” chocolates and just about blew my toilet apart an hour later. and hey, that 10 minute walk was actually a 7 minute walk. You didn’t shart yourself did ya? Cheers and keep up the awesome content!

  • I have to completely avoid most all sugar alcohols because it triggers a most horrible EVERYTHING MUST GO reaction in my guts, and I’m hitting the toilet hourly until Satan is purged.

  • I am 21:14 minutes in and have not heard of sugar being compared to less socially acceptable forms of addictive substances. Should I keep watching?

  • I have cut out sugar and I am feeling better than I have for years. Check labels. Everything has sugar in it. Go Vegetables and a balanced diet fruit will give you a sweet hit. Six weeks and I feel blessed.

  • The most humble person i have come across on youtube. Has the attitude of gratitude. Thanks for those teachings too sir.
Lots of respect and my best wishes for the year ahead.

  • Erthyritol, xilytol, Stevia, monk fruit, solbitol, Stevia blend, xanthan gum and other food gums, sweetner 960 is Stevia. These are all safe and have many benefits and almost no side affects an no long term side affects, they’re all good

  • Imagine if adults just took personally responsibility. Just eat real food. Meat, veggies, fruit, eggs. Thats all it takes. Its remarkably easy. Just stop being lazy. Everyones life is busy. How is that an excuse people use and we accept? How are these people surprised by how much sugar is in these products? It says right on the back. Ive seen someone quit a heroin habbit cold turkey while going through chemo therapy. Quitting sugar should be easy.

  • Hi Lacey, as always thanks for another informative video! Small thing… I’m not a dietician or nutritionist, but I think erythritol is pronounced like: air-rith-ri-tall. And Agave is: uh-gah-vay. I could be wrong, but that’s how I’ve heard them pronounced many times before. Keep up these videos and keep doing you!! Don’t compare yourself, you are awesome! Perfect version of you!!

  • when i drink a lot, lemon water or keto cacso with lots of birch sugar, i.m completely swamped….and after a hot shower and teo hrs later it.s completely gone….extreme! it vanishes at least over night…les birch sugar….

  • I can’t digest sugar alcohol; one sugar free candy or one piece of sugar free chocolate give me terrible stomach pains but I digest Equal or Splenda just fine

  • Hey!! Thanks for your video. Since I spoke to you last time, I just want you to know that I am still doing GREAT! Still doing my Healthy Keto diet. No more diabetes, and all my numbers look great since I got my A1c up with the Pink Sea salt., even my thyroid numbers look great with having only one side now ( NO MEDS) 40 pounds down! I have never cheated on this diet, and can’t imagine ever going back. Thanks for all you do and for teaching me so munch 😉

  • Stan, 8g of sodium equals about 25g of salt, right?

regarding drinking water only when thirsty… i would never drink water if i would follow that advice…. and I sweat about 35kg of fluid per workout…

    any thoughts?

  • Hey.. wait what??
    2 kissy cats?
    I am about to faith.
Seriously though; miss Dunn. Thank You for all this information. Sending a Magical hug to you.
Als a BIG Congrats to your Bachelor degree Miss Dunn. Keep on doing your best!

  • Oh my god this is the BEST documentary about sugar addiction I’ve ever watched. Getting properly informed tremendously helps for sure get ready for the battle ❤️so I’m extremely inspired to start my own journey now.

  • I agree with his final statements…I’ve been doing keto for a while now and I have no desire to make these keto desserts which is surprising since I always had to have chocolate throughout my day.

  • This link seems to be failing.. I’m clicking on plateau should I increases/ decreases calories and it opens alcohol and sugars…

  • Between Xylitol and Erythritol, which is the one with the intense cooling effect? Some websites say Xylitol and that’s why it’s usually combined with mint, and other websites say Erythritol has the largest cooling effect. So which is it? A strong cooling effect will probably bother me if all I want is sweetness.

  • Hello Dr. Berg!! Thanks for all these great videos!! You phone app is very nice, easy to find info in & cutting edge as well!! May this new year 2019 be very good for everyone especially those who are trying hard to improve their health to be their best!!

  • I can’t digest sugar alcohol; one sugar free candy or one piece of sugar free chocolate give me terrible stomach pains but I digest Equal or Splenda just fine

  • Isn”t the water retention caused by the high fiber intake? With polydextroses like erythritol being classified as fibers by the FDA. I find it highly questionable that a person would gain 2kg from one meal, unless that person is in a major calorie surplus?

  • I don’t think it has to be a temporary thing, using them. I like to make Keto friendly snacks and desserts and using Erythritol or Stevia is the only solution. Giving those up would make staying keto much harder. Some people don’t need snacks or desserts but some of us do. I don’t think we all need to do the same thing.

  • Hi Dr. Berg, can you make a video about specific about pure Monk Fruit? You actually need just a little bit of it because it’s already so strong, but what I’m really wondering is, how much can you take this stuff without having a problem? Is there a certain limit? Thanks in advance <3

  • Weird. Cos for me all of the above erithritol, erithitol is the only one that doesn’t give give me gas, even stevia makes me gassy

  • I am not doing keto but I am trying to reduce carbs and sugar, is it pointless to mix a sugar alcohol and a natural sugar? I want to reduce the amount of sugar I’m consuming but if I only use a sugar alcohol on its own I will get abdominal pain.

  • What about sugar alcohol and fiber carbs during contest prep? Good? Bad? Do you count them as regular carbs in your macros? Would love a vid about that. Thanks.

  • Hi dr Berg. I recently started paying attention to food ingredients and realized how many food have dextrose but still say zero carbs. I noticed this in a pack of pepeoni. How is this possible, how can the label say zero carbs when the product has sugar in it?

  • Thank god I found this channel, all these supposed health foods, like avocado, coffee, sugar alcohols, etc, all made me paint the porcelain. I thought there was something wrong with me, normal food doesn’t bother me, so I was wondering what the hell is wrong with me. Turns out a lot of this new stuff is junk.

  • I think Stevia is causing me to have blisters on the roof of my mouth. Took me months to figure it out but im sure its when i consume too much. Would erythritol be a better choice?

  • On almost every “stop drinking” youtube channel the people tell about weight loss after cutting out the booze, which is nothing but a drug toxin..

  • Krisda Monk Fruit Sweetener. Contains only erythritol and monk fruit extract. A bit pricey, but I just use it for my morning coffee.
I found that stevia tainted the flavour of my coffee.

  • Hey Dr. Berg. What about sucralose? I’ve been drinking propel fitness water and I noticed it has sucralose in it. Is this Propel water going to knock me out of ketosis?

  • Hello Dr. Berg, some recent studies show that artificial sweeteners do cause an insulin spike probably (some claim) because of the reaction of the body to the sweet taste. Please let me know your thoughts.

  • Where can we submit questions to Dr. Berg to answer on here… or do we just write them here..??? Thanks if you can let me know. Oh, and Happy 2019-!!

  • The guiltiest product of what he is talking about is Quest bars and products. They’ll say 1g of sugar, but they are loaded with all “ol’s” and fake fiber. And are completely gut wrenching.

  • I consume about 60+ packets of twin sugar / Splenda / sweet n low everyday….I’m beginning to feel very concerned for my health and don’t know what to do its like I’m addicted!!

  • Hi Dr. Berg, can you make a video about specific about pure Monk Fruit? You actually need just a little bit of it because it’s already so strong, but what I’m really wondering is, how much can you take this stuff without having a problem? Is there a certain limit? Thanks in advance <3

  • OMG!! soo agreed! pills powders and potions…people its all processed foods…Whole food is always a better choice!…..The Best Fast Food…is the Food you prepare and can Grab and go Thanks Stan!!

  • I can eat 1.5 oz of chocolate with maltolol (See’s sugar free) before getting room-clearing gas. (You’ll have to trust me on this one, it is epic!) It doesn’t bother me…. the wife is another story.

  • This link seems to be failing.. I’m clicking on plateau should I increases/ decreases calories and it opens alcohol and sugars…

  • I have to stay away from all sugar alcohols due to IBS-even relatively small amounts cause massive issues-sore/aching gut, diarrhea, cramps, pulsating etc. Had some raspberries & blueberries at the weekend & boy did the soribitol & xylitol content in them cause problems. Years back I eat one piece of Spry chewing gum & it caused nearly 24 hours of horrible stomach pains, horrible huge solid number twos mixed in with bouts of diarrhea etc.

  • I ate regular food at Thanks Giving dinner and Christmas, but was cautious not to overeat, and actually lost few pounds…. Tomorrow, ITF and one meal a day starts again, and I’m really looking forward to it….( I never use any kind of sweeteners, because all of them make my stomach hurt)…….

  • I used to use erythritol (also called Swerve as a brand name.) I have switched to Monk Fruit because I believe that I have developed an allergic reaction to Erythritol. I woke up one morning with half of my tongue severely swollen. Another morning, the other side half my lip, and yet another morning, woke up with one side of face (jowl) swollen. I looked it up and finally found that it is angioedema (like hives beneath the skin tissue)histamine reaction which in all 3 cases was resolved by using BenadrylI’ve since found Quercetin/bromelain is an effective natural antihistamine supplement.
I’m not 100% certain if the reactions were caused by erythritol, but all 3 times I had a reaction, I had consumed deserts made with erythritol the night before. Since I’ve switched to using monk fruit, I haven’t had a reactionit’s more expensive, but more natural.

  • Just want to say THANK YOU for all your clips… your advice… both my husband and I watch your videos and appreciate all your information and time and effort you put in… Thank you!

  • Ok so here I am thinking I’m killing it without real sugar only to find out that I’m using the worst sugar alternative……God bless you doc I think this is why I haven’t been able to drop these last 20 pounds…

  • I am not doing keto but I am trying to reduce carbs and sugar, is it pointless to mix a sugar alcohol and a natural sugar? I want to reduce the amount of sugar I’m consuming but if I only use a sugar alcohol on its own I will get abdominal pain.

  • I’m finding “sweet replacement” products, and bars have maltitol syrup. After an hour or so it does a real job on my stomach, I cannot tolerate it. Others I know can handle it fine. For me it’s stevia and/or erythritol.

  • Great advise on the sweeteners! I’ve had stomach problems for years and have eaten these fake sugars for years; I never linked that together. I cut them from my diet and within a couple days my digestive system took a 180 and feels completely healthy.

  • I’m finding “sweet replacement” products, and bars have maltitol syrup. After an hour or so it does a real job on my stomach, I cannot tolerate it. Others I know can handle it fine. For me it’s stevia and/or erythritol.

  • do you have any recommendations for a stevia, monk fruit, or combination of both? I am looking for a sweetener that does NOT cause farting. Thanks!

  • Dr. Berg, I have been following you for months now but I rarely comment due to my note taking from your videos. You have had a major impact on my nutritional habits and I thank you. Me and my girlfriend plan to take your health coaching course to futher our knowledge and share with others the power of healthy food choices. I downloaded the app about a week ago and I dig it. I can easliy find and rewatch the videos that I have notes from making it easy to stay on point. Thanks again

  • Stan, 8g of sodium equals about 25g of salt, right?

regarding drinking water only when thirsty… i would never drink water if i would follow that advice…. and I sweat about 35kg of fluid per workout…

    any thoughts?

  • I stopped doing the “*tols” ( any of the sugar alcohols) It didn’t agree with my stomach and I was experiencing symptoms of the leaky gut (when proteins pass into the blood) and it wasn’t good. I simply stick with stevia now, no more issues, down 75 lbs from my all time high.

  • Do sugar alcohols have any affect on the liver? Or is fructose the only thing we need to worry about with regard to fatty liver development?

  • Withdrawal is hard. Why is no one talking about the oat cure though? I believe it can add to healing the blood sugar roller coasters and the cravings too.

  • I quit sugar a year ago. not looking back. I don’t even get the idea of craving anymore. and the weightless and the economies I’ve made are huge

  • Maltitol is fine and does not kick you out of KETO. I’ve used it for months and remained in Keto. I’m 47. Not young, but Maltitol is one of the best bets if you like sugar free chocolate.

  • You mentioned you use Xylitol in your diet. Would be interested in learning your opinion about the pros and cons. Thanks for the info! As always, great stuff

  • I believe that Xylitol gave me terrible and extremely debilitating gout. I was intermittent fasting at the time, but during the fast period was cheating by eating Smint Mints. The gout went away a few days after putting these mints in the bin. Of course the link may just be my imagination, but is there a metabolic pathway by which this could happen?

  • I know that the sweet drops stevia has vegetable glycerin in it. Is that a problem that would break a fast or raise insulin levels?

  • Alcohols Makes You Stupid alcohol is full of fluoride & Preservatives Sulfide & Nuclear Isotopes Most Of The Hops Come From Yakima Valley Hanford Plutonium Sill Killing Earth U Know?

  • I dont eat items that have sugar alcohol unless I need to get very gassy and fog aisles in stores or just be obnoxious from farting all the time.

  • What about sugar alcohol and fiber carbs during contest prep? Good? Bad? Do you count them as regular carbs in your macros? Would love a vid about that. Thanks.

  • Thank you so much for all your videos. From my past and present experience the nutirional information you are imparting is right at the top tier of factual, truthful, practical, and just fabulous information. Absolutely brilliant and genius data. So helpful and reassuring. Thank you so much.

  • Wow best channel ever, nobody else dives this deep into this health stuff like Dr Berg, I literally just eat this info up, thank you Dr Berg

  • Thank you for all of your valued information. However, since the Keto diet explosion, are also a lot of companies coming out with low-carb breads/bagels/cookies, etc. I’d much rather use these products than make my own because I haven’t found any really good recipes. Can you please do a video reviewing the ingredients in these products so we know what to avoid? Great Low-Carb baking Company has great tasting baked goods, and Alterna Sweets are two that I love. I saw an ad on Facebook for a low-carb bread that had maltitol in the ingredient list. Other low-carb breads have vital wheat gluten, soy flour, whole wheat flour, wheat bran and soy protein. How can these be good for someone following a ketogenic diet? Would love a video informing us what to stay away from. These products are also very very expensive. Thank you and Happy New Year.

  • DR BERG SHOULD GET A YOUTUBE AWARD FOR BEST PRESERVING PEOPLES TIME THE BEST! HE GETS STRAIGHT TO THE POUNT INSPIRING MY TIME TO CHECK OUT MANY MORE VIDEOS IN HALF THE TIME! • Hi Lacey! What protein powder do you use if splenda/sucralose doesn’t sit well with you? Most protein powders I see have sucralose and I would like to find a good one that doesn’t have that.

  • Oh my god this is the BEST documentary about sugar addiction I’ve ever watched. Getting properly informed tremendously helps for sure get ready for the battle ❤️so I’m extremely inspired to start my own journey now.

  • Sugar is added to almost everything because it’s highly addictive. You eat sugar or carbs, you want more of it, and you therefore eat more food. (The food industry profits go up. Coincidence?) This equals eventual weight gain.
I have been on tons of diets. Works for awhile on pure willpower, but eventually just eating something like potatoes, pasta, rice, will make my cravings to eat everything insight inevitable. It’s the chemical response in my body to the sugars (carbs turn into sugar when it enters the body) I could never avoid. It’s an addiction to eating.

I’ve been Keto for only a couple of weeks and the cravings are gone. I don’t overeat anymore. I am satisfied with no sugar and little carbs. I have lost weight, feel great, and my blood sugars are down (I was diagnosed as diabetic 2 years ago). I know if I added carbs back, I would go nuts and eat, eat, eat again! Not going to happen this time! I am breaking the addiction!
The government will never endorse this kind of life changing way of eating because they are paid by the food industry to keep their mouths shut. If people eat less, they make less. And the pharmaceutical companies would make less too. Got to keep us medicated to keep profits up! Sickening how sick we are because of their greed and power.

  • Do sugar alcohols have any affect on the liver? Or is fructose the only thing we need to worry about with regard to fatty liver development?

  • I started using erythritol serve form and love it. But since then I have been having cravings, brain fog etc. I was doing fine before. Wondering if it’s something else or if this is causing it. Any body else have this experience?

  • Artificial sweeteners don’t seem to agree with me. The artificial sweeteners in chewing gum upsets my stomach, and aspartame gives me a headache within minutes. How can these artificial sweeteners really be safe for consumption when my body reacts so adversely?

  • Another fantastic video. Your ability to educate us in our quest to change to a healthy lifestyle/get healthy is very appreciated. Thank you Dr Berg

  • This is such a true statement at the very end where he says the sugar alcohol treats are a transition. Because once you’re in full-blown ketosis you don’t crave carbs and sugar anymore. After Christmas and eating sugar and carbs I’m transitioning back into my omad ketosis lifestyle. Hopefully only one more week of this nonsense and I will be good. Each morning I’ve been making low carb Muffins with erythritol and it’s hurting my stomach. When normally I fast until about 2 p.m. and then eat he nice keto meal.

  • Great advise on the sweeteners! I’ve had stomach problems for years and have eaten these fake sugars for years; I never linked that together. I cut them from my diet and within a couple days my digestive system took a 180 and feels completely healthy.

  • Through out high school I use to periodically chew close to a whole pack of gum at at time, and I would always have some sort of GI problem and I never new why until started looking at the ingredients and doing research on sugar alcohols and it was also clouding my mind also. I agree 100% with what you say.

  • I drink coffee heard your earlier talks. It doesn’t bother my stomach. Not much does but I still have increased the amount of beef and rice I eat. I stopped taking protein powder all together. Feel great.

  • Introducing erithrytol made me gain up to twelve lbs, messed my stomach up bad…. I’m now back down seven lbs but I have seven more to go to get back to my normal… None of the cheap sweeteners ever did this to me over the years

  • Watched this with the window open because I was fluffing so much. I’m certain it was the sugar alcohols I ate 6 hours ago because I’ve been avoiding them lately but every single time I have some I always flufff like crazy. No more for me.

  • We can still eat the same food with one condition.. it’s exercise.. more calories intake more exercise..it’s simple maths..
calories intake calories burned should be zero

  • I have to completely avoid most all sugar alcohols because it triggers a most horrible EVERYTHING MUST GO reaction in my guts, and I’m hitting the toilet hourly until Satan is purged.

  • Erythritol ftw. I think you have to consume rather large quantities of it to get gastric problems. And you would never have that much sweet food on keto now, would you??!

  • Is maltodextrin and dextrose the same? I have been buying boxes and boxes of Stevia from Cosco for a long time and it has dextrose as the first ingredient. And I use it a lot and now I am doubting what I use. Does anyone know the answer to this?

  • When you are trying to lose the cravings for sweets, how does it help to use crap that keeps it going? It’s like an alcoholic having just one drink…you sabotage your progress! I don’t ever use any products with stevia, erythritol, etc! Have totally lost my taste for anything sweet.

  • Hey Stan, again thanks for sharing your view. I have experienced stomach issues when consuming dragonfruit, its one of the fruits i love the most. But it seems My body doesnt tolerate it. Any suggestion what causes this?

  • Another fantastic video. Your ability to educate us in our quest to change to a healthy lifestyle/get healthy is very appreciated. Thank you Dr Berg

  • We should never touch the poisen called suggar is far best, i am suger free since four months or so lost 50ibs and feeling my best moments Alhamidulillah

  • Sweets in general have been severely reduced in my food intake, some days it’s zero. Usually only use erythritol and stevia when I bake, and that’s really not very often.

  • I have cut out sugar and I am feeling better than I have for years. Check labels. Everything has sugar in it. Go Vegetables and a balanced diet fruit will give you a sweet hit. Six weeks and I feel blessed.

  • I’m shocked! I’ve had what I thought is ibs for years. I’ve drunk 10 cans of Pepsi max a day since I was 16… I’ve got a lot to think about
