The pecan nuts ranking high on the good list is good news. I planted a nut tree orchard 15 years ago: pecans and English walnuts, black walnuts to sell nuts /have survival food in “retirement years”. I will eat the squirrels that nut trees attract, but only a palmful of nuts.

Hello I have PhD in Biochemistry with an emphasis I am one of the few Nutritional Biochemists in the world. If you can find Pili nuts ok. BUT,,,,,, the number one nut for Keto are pecans. They have the lowest carbs a simple fact. I recognize that these are your favorites.

Hello, I just started my keto diet. I am a 10 year cancer survivor, treated holistically. I have been intermittent fasting for a few years. Eating breakfast first thing has never appealed to me. I just watched several of your videos and I must say, what you say and how you present really strikes a cord with me. I am still trying to get a handle on the right food. My diet is generally good. However, wicked menopause is currently havng its way with me. Haha. I am hopeful that this diet change will also help. Again with many thanks.

Brazil nuts are very nice and cheap, but they are radioactive, as the roots of their huge trees go too deep into the ground and absorb radium. That’s why only a couple of Brazil nuts are recommended daily at most…
Hi, and thanks for all your videos:) What about the Omega 6 content of most nuts? (if I remember correctly macadamias were pretty low but most other were quite/really high) One of the main reasons vegetable oils are bad is their very high Omega 6 content right? Is there a difference if you get lots of Omega 6 from nuts rather than from vegetable oils? That could make sense since many/most vegetable oils are created in petrochemical baths, but what about the Omega 3/6 ratio even with “clean” Omega 6?:p (I personally love almonds but that fear of Omega 6 keeps me from eating the whole pack so please alleviate my fears so I can eat them all ^_^)
That’s unfortunate. Pecans and macadamia nuts have a nauseating texture, and macadamia nuts specifically taste just awful. Cashews and almonds taste the best, but are the worst for you in ketosis. Oh well.

Salt won’t hurt you, plus every”best nut” declaration has them in different order or includes different nuts entirely. Therefore forget this video and all the rest. Standing in front of a camera and declaring an opinion doesn’t establish a fact. Overeating nuts can be a problem, therefore drop the salt even if it’s good for you and make walnuts first, peanuts second, macadamia third, pecan fourth and cashews last. Or just eat a small amount of mixed nuts. There, saved you many hours.

Brazil and Macadamia nuts have been cautioned against because of their high saturated fat content. Pecans are rather expensive. Pili nuts are, I believe, even more expensive because they are not often seen in places like Walmart. The “expert” does not mention almonds at all, though they are often promoted as very healthful. I think anyone who makes food choices on the basis of “expert” advice on the internet alone is foolish. The advice offered may be promotional, for the benefit of the merchants of such products.

Cashews, walnuts and almonds aren’t true nuts either. They’re the seed of a drupe. You can’t eat cashews raw either. Ones labelled as “raw” are usually steamed.
In raw almonds, the phytic acid is in the brown skin. Soaking almonds in water for eight hours and then pouring off the water and rinsing the almonds, effectively dissolves and removes the phytic acid making the almonds safe to eat. However, it might be easier (and not that much more expensive) to pig out on macadamias instead! Cracking raw macadamias without a dedicated macadamia cracker: You’ll need an adjustable vice-grip and a number 8 or 12 paper bag. Adjust the vice-grip so when it closes, it is just slightly smaller than the nut you’ll be cracking. Gently place the nut in the vice-grip jaws, move the nut and tool into the bag, then squeeze! The nut shell will shatter and bounce around in the bag, and you then have access to one whole, unbroken nut meat. Repeat ad absurdum.:o)

They have phytic acid which inhibits the digestive system from breaking down nutrients, especially minerals. I lost a lot of weight over the last 7 months, but it was agonizingly slow compared to the swift successes others were having. I’m guessing it was due, in part, to peanut butter. Sure, I thought I was counting and keeping within serving sizes so I didn’t go over for the day, but when I realized how fast I was going through a jar, I just decided to knock it out.
Keto diet is the worst! I eat more like a Vegetarian only eat very little meat in holiday or on bday, no Dairy products no processed food and I eat plant-based whole food for all my life over 44 years. I am a fit and active Asian women. The Keto diet it caused my healthy number all went bad!! Cholesterol went up from 98 to 140 then over 250!!!! Lost few lbs in the beginning then gained 5lbs! And body fat increased to 29%!! I stopped that and went back to my plants base eating life style, this month and everything starts going back to healthy range. High fat Keto diet promoters are all sponsors by meat /fat producers! And butter is back research was sponsored by the industry producers too! Plants based Whole Foods eating life style is good for environment and less animals diet, less land used to grow animals feed!!! Animals Fart hurting the ozone in atmosphere. Eating less meat will result in less waste of food& pollution! If people eat less meat products this world would be a much better place and no more Global warming. Less demand on meat and processed food, more eating healthy plants based food will make the industry producers make positive changes based on our demand. WE ARE the key for the change!!

I ate like pig and paid the price; hypertension, borderline diabetes, etc., on meds forever. I’ve been 40 lbs. overweight for years, which I considered normal. Stupid. Just over a week ago, I just got wise and cleaned out all the rice, potatoes, pasta, tonic water, sodas, cornbread (that hurt), hush puppies (ouch), Miller High Life (now we’re getting serious) and all that high carb crap, and listened to the good Dr. I dropped 8 lbs in the first week. It’s hard for an old dog to learn new ways, but this is not as hard as you think. Getting a stroke or losing a limb to diabetes is much harder, not only to you, but also the ones who care about you. Do this, now. Chances are your MD hasn’t told you about Keto. Forget them if they have not. Drug companies and many physicians want you to stay sick and make money off your symptoms. Believe it.

My understanding is that net carbs are what one has to look at in the ketogenic diet. This makes 2.6g of net carbs in 1 ounce of almonds. This is still a low amount, isn’t it?
I love walnuts and pecans but had terrible gastro distress from the phytic acid. I tried soaking them in salt water but hated the texture even after dehydrating them.
Since nuts naturally contain oil, I decided to try coating the nuts in MCT oil and letting them sit overnight. Voila! The nuts are delicious and so far no negative reactions.
I imagine other oils would work too but the MCT oil is a KETO staple and does not mask the nutty flavor. Thanks for reading.

I love nuts, especially almonds (one of my sources for calcium) but really dislike macadamia nuts: all I can taste is fat… I get heart burn when eating high fat foods like cheese and cream, and flatulence when eating 2 or more eggs. I don’t know if it is because I don’t have a gallbladder.
I am also vegetarian, in a country where most of the vegetarian high fat foods (like avocados and nuts, apart from peanuts) are either unavailable or VERY expensive import food. I rely on milk (soy and cow’s milk) and eggs for protein and tofu when I can get it. Can I still try keto or will it be too restrictive for me? I have a digestive problem (diarrhea, constipation, bloating and flatulence) doctors haven’t found a cause for. I think it could be an imbalance of gut bacteria, although I take acidophilus capsules and eat (plain) live yogurt now and then. Not eating fresh, raw vegetables and fruit for a few weeks make me feel “unwell”. I haven’t found a website or a book for vegetarian keto diet, of what I can eat and how much.

Pine nuts can cause a side effect known as “pine mouth,” which leaves everything bitter tasting for 7-10 days. Not all pine nuts, mainly the ones that come from China. Costco pine nuts fall into that category. Although delicious and relatively cheap, after eating a good amount of pine nuts, I got pine mouth. Of course, portion control was an issue, but it did scare me into thinking something was seriously wrong. Costco pecans and walnuts are fresh and real value, and certainly better than snacking on a carb.

The info in this video is not very healthy at all. EVERYONE KNOWS nuts are good for you-but what this professional SHOULD have mentioned is the importance of SOAKING the nuts before consuming them. SOAKING RELEASES THE ENZYME INHIBITORS IN THE NUTS-MAKING THEM MUCH MORE HEALTHIER FOR THE BODY AND EASIER FOR DIGESTION. Peacans per ounce have 5.8g of omega-6 and.3g of omega-3 which is approximately a 19 to 1 ratio which should also cause inflammation.

Phytic acid is a enzyme inhibitor that blocks nutrient absorption. Soaking them in salt water over night breaks down the phytic acid; you then rinses them, towel and air dry and keep them in the refrigerator and you will get the full benefits of your nuts and seeds when you eat them.

The pecan nuts ranking high on the good list is good news. I planted a nut tree orchard 15 years ago: pecans and English walnuts, black walnuts to sell nuts /have survival food in “retirement years”. I will eat the squirrels that nut trees attract, but only a palmful of nuts.

Keep in mind that Brazil nuts are very rich in selenium. One nut a day is enough to meet the need for selenium. Eating more than two nuts can be too much.

Pili nut is my favorite tons of these nuts from Philippines however the ones we have are coated with carmel or sugar I haven’t see any plain or salted pili around.

One brazil nut (of 2.9 grams) has about 100% RDA of selenium for both men and women (55 mcg). Wouldn’t eating more than a few brazil nuts lead to selenium toxicity?
Learned a ton in this and often eat almonds and cashews. No more will they be consumed like they were being. Picked up some pecans with my grocery shop this time.
Quite luckily I have never been a fan of cashews. As for almonds, I soak them overnight and that should help with antinutrient reduction.

Hello, I just started my keto diet. I am a 10 year cancer survivor, treated holistically. I have been intermittent fasting for a few years. Eating breakfast first thing has never appealed to me. I just watched several of your videos and I must say, what you say and how you present really strikes a cord with me. I am still trying to get a handle on the right food. My diet is generally good. However, wicked menopause is currently havng its way with me. Haha. I am hopeful that this diet change will also help. Again with many thanks.

Brazil nuts are very nice and cheap, but they are radioactive, as the roots of their huge trees go too deep into the ground and absorb radium. That’s why only a couple of Brazil nuts are recommended daily at most…

What about the Omega 6 content of most nuts? (if I remember correctly macadamias were pretty low but most other were quite/really high)
One of the main reasons vegetable oils are bad is their very high Omega 6 content right?
Is there a difference if you get lots of Omega 6 from nuts rather than from vegetable oils? That could make sense since many/most vegetable oils are created in petrochemical baths, but what about the Omega 3/6 ratio even with “clean” Omega 6?:p
(I personally love almonds but that fear of Omega 6 keeps me from eating the whole pack so please alleviate my fears so I can eat them all ^_^)
That’s unfortunate. Pecans and macadamia nuts have a nauseating texture, and macadamia nuts specifically taste just awful. Cashews and almonds taste the best, but are the worst for you in ketosis. Oh well.

Salt won’t hurt you, plus every”best nut” declaration has them in different order or includes different nuts entirely. Therefore forget this video and all the rest. Standing in front of a camera and declaring an opinion doesn’t establish a fact. Overeating nuts can be a problem, therefore drop the salt even if it’s good for you and make walnuts first, peanuts second, macadamia third, pecan fourth and cashews last. Or just eat a small amount of mixed nuts. There, saved you many hours.

Brazil and Macadamia nuts have been cautioned against because of their high saturated fat content. Pecans are rather expensive. Pili nuts are, I believe, even more expensive because they are not often seen in places like Walmart. The “expert” does not mention almonds at all, though they are often promoted as very healthful. I think anyone who makes food choices on the basis of “expert” advice on the internet alone is foolish. The advice offered may be promotional, for the benefit of the merchants of such products.

Living in SE Asia, I checked piling nuts. Not available in my country of course. However, I am not sure if I am disappointed: it is ENDANGERED species, so not being cultivated commercially is not such a great thing.

Cashews, walnuts and almonds aren’t true nuts either. They’re the seed of a drupe. You can’t eat cashews raw either. Ones labelled as “raw” are usually steamed.
In raw almonds, the phytic acid is in the brown skin. Soaking almonds in water for eight hours and then pouring off the water and rinsing the almonds, effectively dissolves and removes the phytic acid making the almonds safe to eat. However, it might be easier (and not that much more expensive) to pig out on macadamias instead!
Cracking raw macadamias without a dedicated macadamia cracker: You’ll need an adjustable vice-grip and a number 8 or 12 paper bag. Adjust the vice-grip so when it closes, it is just slightly smaller than the nut you’ll be cracking. Gently place the nut in the vice-grip jaws, move the nut and tool into the bag, then squeeze! The nut shell will shatter and bounce around in the bag, and you then have access to one whole, unbroken nut meat. Repeat ad absurdum.:o)

Despite what this woman is falsely saying about Almonds, they’re the worst nut a human can ever consume. They have phytic acid which inhibits the digestive system from breaking down nutrients, especially minerals. Though they themselves have vitamin E in them, the phytic acid overrides its breakdown into the human body. So in essence, Almonds function like an Anti-nutrient.

I sealed packs they get rancid because they high in fat. They should sell nuts from a freezer. Never buy sealed nuts. Buy fresh from farmers market in shells and peel it at home, keep them in your freezer! Do not eat rancid nuts!!!

I lost a lot of weight over the last 7 months, but it was agonizingly slow compared to the swift successes others were having. I’m guessing it was due, in part, to peanut butter. Sure, I thought I was counting and keeping within serving sizes so I didn’t go over for the day, but when I realized how fast I was going through a jar, I just decided to knock it out.
Keto diet is the worst! I eat more like a Vegetarian only eat very little meat in holiday or on bday, no Dairy products no processed food and I eat plant-based whole food for all my life over 44 years. I am a fit and active Asian women. The Keto diet it caused my healthy number all went bad!! Cholesterol went up from 98 to 140 then over 250!!!! Lost few lbs in the beginning then gained 5lbs! And body fat increased to 29%!! I stopped that and went back to my plants base eating life style, this month and everything starts going back to healthy range. High fat Keto diet promoters are all sponsors by meat /fat producers! And butter is back research was sponsored by the industry producers too! Plants based Whole Foods eating life style is good for environment and less animals diet, less land used to grow animals feed!!! Animals Fart hurting the ozone in atmosphere. Eating less meat will result in less waste of food& pollution! If people eat less meat products this world would be a much better place and no more Global warming. I ate like pig and paid the price; hypertension, borderline diabetes, etc., on meds forever. I’ve been 40 lbs. overweight for years, which I considered normal. Stupid. Just over a week ago, I just got wise and cleaned out all the rice, potatoes, pasta, tonic water, sodas, cornbread (that hurt), hush puppies (ouch), Miller High Life (now we’re getting serious) and all that high carb crap, and listened to the good Dr. I dropped 8 lbs in the first week. It’s hard for an old dog to learn new ways, but this is not as hard as you think. Getting a stroke or losing a limb to diabetes is much harder, not only to you, but also the ones who care about you. Do this, now. Chances are your MD hasn’t told you about Keto. Forget them if they have not. Drug companies and many physicians want you to stay sick and make money off your symptoms. Believe it.

It is a great exclusive guide for understanding how to strengthen shoulder and hips minus the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my old buddy Taylor at last got excellent success with it.
Dr. Berry, I use almond flour to make waffles, breads, and cookies that are “keto friendly”. 1 ounce of almonds has 6.1g of carbs, of which 3.5g are fiber. My understanding is that net carbs are what one has to look at in the ketogenic diet. This makes 2.6g of net carbs in 1 ounce of almonds. This is still a low amount, isn’t it?
I love walnuts and pecans but had terrible gastro distress from the phytic acid. I tried soaking them in salt water but hated the texture even after dehydrating them.
Since nuts naturally contain oil, I decided to try coating the nuts in MCT oil and letting them sit overnight. Voila! The nuts are delicious and so far no negative reactions.
I imagine other oils would work too but the MCT oil is a KETO staple and does not mask the nutty flavor. Thanks for reading.
Hi Thomas, what are you medical credentials? I appreciate all the info. What background do you have to be at this level of providing detailed nutritional information to the masses? I’m trying to get the best of my keto diet, so this is something I’m concerned about. You go into detail about aflatoxins, pytates, hydroxybuterate, acetoacetate, etc. No normal viewer would understand this unless they were a doctor, specifically a doctor specializing in nutritional health. Are you a doctor of nutritional health? Do you understand the recommendations you are making?

Thank you Dr. Berry for this video! How have I been Keto more than a year and not seen this?? I lost 50lbs and now I’ve been stuck for 3 months. This definitely speaks to me because I do eat a lot of nuts!
I just don’t get it. If almonds are on the naughty list, why do keto-preneurs push almonds as super keto friendly? Almonds, almond butter, almond milk, almond flour. Why not pecan nuts/butter/milk/flour or walnut nuts/butter/milk/flour at half the carbs of almonds?
I know of at least 233 nuts that are extremely bad for you.

I love nuts, especially almonds (one of my sources for calcium) but really dislike macadamia nuts: all I can taste is fat…
I get heart burn when eating high fat foods like cheese and cream, and flatulence when eating 2 or more eggs. I don’t know if it is because I don’t have a gallbladder.
I am also vegetarian, in a country where most of the vegetarian high fat foods (like avocados and nuts, apart from peanuts) are either unavailable or VERY expensive import food. I rely on milk (soy and cow’s milk) and eggs for protein and tofu when I can get it. Can I still try keto or will it be too restrictive for me? I have a digestive problem (diarrhea, constipation, bloating and flatulence) doctors haven’t found a cause for. I think it could be an imbalance of gut bacteria, although I take acidophilus capsules and eat (plain) live yogurt now and then. Not eating fresh, raw vegetables and fruit for a few weeks make me feel “unwell”.
I haven’t found a website or a book for vegetarian keto diet, of what I can eat and how much.
Almonds:
Blanching the almonds to remove the skins is helpful, then soaking overnight.
It may be this explains the prep for using ground almonds in a recipe.
If true, it would be good prep for making almond flour.

Macadamias are pretty much one of the healthiest foods ever. Too many calories? Don’t eat too many. DERP! Cashews aren’t nuts. “Bitter almonds” aren’t nuts (or almonds.)

If your worried abiut phytic acid soak your nuts beans seeds pulses, its in them all, however its a powerful anti oxident and is said to prevent colon cancer.

Note that some nuts have positive effects on your testosterone… and others don’t. Brazil and Macademia, good… the rest on his list… not sure. There’s also a digestive/fermentation aspect to nuts… not sure if there’s an index for it, but again, Brazil and macademia seem to be the choice to run with.

Pine nuts can cause a side effect known as “pine mouth,” which leaves everything bitter tasting for 7-10 days. Not all pine nuts, mainly the ones that come from China. Costco pine nuts fall into that category. Although delicious and relatively cheap, after eating a good amount of pine nuts, I got pine mouth. Of course, portion control was an issue, but it did scare me into thinking something was seriously wrong. Costco pecans and walnuts are fresh and real value, and certainly better than snacking on a carb.
Dang it…almonds are my favorites, and I occasionally eat cashews because they taste so dang good. I guess I’ll have to switch to pecans and macadamia nuts.
I always knew almond flour was bad in large consumption because of Phytic Acid so I limited my baked goods because most keto treats are made with almond flour.
The info in this video is not very healthy at all. EVERYONE KNOWS nuts are good for you-but what this professional SHOULD have mentioned is the importance of SOAKING the nuts before consuming them. SOAKING RELEASES THE ENZYME INHIBITORS IN THE NUTS-MAKING THEM MUCH MORE HEALTHIER FOR THE BODY AND EASIER FOR DIGESTION. Toasting the nuts also isn’t a great idea.. anything heated over 118 degrees starts killing off the enzymes in foods. Check the science. My apologies and respectfully, but I have to disagree completely with this video.
