With the increasing demand for meal kit delivery services, it’s no surprise that the mother of all weight-loss programs, Weight Watchers, is testing out The Downfalls of Packaged Diets chevron_left PREV: How Traffic Signal Colors Help. The Disadvantages of Prepackaged Food. While processed and prepackaged foods can be fast and convenient options for meals and snacks, they aren’t always the healthiest choices. Making your meals from whole foods or using minimally processed ingredients, such as frozen fruits or vegetables, is usually a better.

However, experts and doctors do warn against the use of packaged foods due to the presence of various chemicals in packaging materials that can contaminate foods and lead to serious health. Look at your ingredients before you purchase and remember that if hydrogenated oil is listed as an ingredient, then there are definitely trans fats. This same type of packaged food contains saturated fats, which are unhealthy for the human body. The fact that prepackaged diets are calorie-restricted should actually be more of an advantage than a disadvantage.

However, a health expert says otherwise. He states that prepackaged diets that are calorie-restricted won’t help at all. As a matter of fact, they will even promote hunger. So, either the hundreds of millions of people who diet are lazy, unmotivated idiots, or something is wrong with this system. 2. Dieting is bad for your mental and physical health.

Removing oxygen from the packaging is a main advantage to vacuum packing. Certain bacteria that cause spoilage need oxygen to grow and reproduce. Without oxygen the food will last much longer because the bacteria can’t “do their thing.” But the advantage a low-oxygen environment creates can also be a disadvantage. Food lasts longer and stays fresh longer when it’s packaged successfully.

Unpackaged food can quickly become dry, moldy or spoiled. There is evidence that easily accessible, comprehensible and consistent nutrient information on the front of packaged foods could assist shoppers to make healthier food choices. Weight loss: In a review of studies, intermittent fasting was shown to cause 3–8% weight loss over 3–24 weeks, which is a significantly greater percentage than other methods.

  • There is NO other diet that has ever worked for me. I have shed off over 65 pounds within just 5 months. The best part is protein makes you feel full whereas the damn carbs no matter how much you eat you are hungry the next hour. I am a pre-med and I have studied Biochemistry thoroughly, gaining the knowledge of how your metabolism’s pathways work prompted me to start this diet and look at that the Doctor in this video seems to agree with me yay!:D Just remember NO CARBS, no joke, do you want to consume carbs? Do you feel low in sugar? Eat a banana or an apple do not consume high carb diets such as bread, pasta, rice or potato. Also, try to restrict your fat intake as well so preferably, at the end of the day you prefer to burn your own fat, so choose lean meats such as chicken and fish, and DO not fry anything! Grill your meat and steam your vegetables with chicken broth. My personal best meal was protein shake, didn’t have to cook it, was ready in a minute and I could have as much as like, 2 scoops of protein shake for less than 300 calories provides you with over 50 grams of protein! Try this and then tell me that you are not full! Likewise, egg whites worked just as good. Good luck guys and remember to exercise! You want to maintain those muscles!

  • In my country, around 1% of people are vegan, yet many more people have a B12 deficiency. Same goes for iron, Vitamin D and Zinc. It’s not just a vegan problem, it’s about the way people eat. If you eat a balanced vegan diet, you only have to substitute B12. Then again, the animals get that as a substitute in their food as well. So you don’t necessarily have to eat meat if you don’t want to.

  • Hi! I am 46 years old, and I have been overweight my whole life. I have read Dr. Atkin’s book and tried Atkins several times. I felt great on it, except it gave me prolonged diahhrea. That is the biggest reason I did not stick with it. I did love the fact that my cravings disappeared, and I was never really hungry. I am a Weight Watchers failure. I really like the MyFitnessPal website. Bottom line is, I am totally confused about nutrition. I need to lose at least 100 lbs. and I want to do it right. There are soooo many conflicting dogmas out there. It’s the Vegans vs. the Paleo people, the LCHF people vs. Weight Watchers… how am I going to do this? I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes a little over a year ago and take Metformin. I want to get my fasting blood sugar down below 90 and my A1C below 7. So what do you think I should do?

  • High FAT, not high protein! If you try to eat more than 30% calories from protein you will die. Even Atkins recommends high fat. Are you really a doctor?

  • The thing is, Dr Atkins died of a heart attack. Proteins are mostly from animals. Animals in the USA are full of antibiotics and steroids. I followed this diet and took metformin and nothing happened. I switched to going Vegan and only took vitamin d and b12 and stopped metformin and lost weight, mild acne cleared, and i eat all the pasta and bread that i want. I think vegan is the way to go.

  • I hate being vegetarian, but my parents force me to. And let me tell you all one thing when doing a vegan/vegetarian diet, you could probably be healthier than the average person, but 98% of people are not doing it right resulting in it being unhealthy. For example, the majority of all vegans are deficient in b12 which is a crucial vitamin, and the only way to get it is through supplements unless you eat meat. As a vegetarian that has never had meat, I’m telling you it’s not worth it, just have a balanced diet and eat whatever. We are omnivorous after all.

    Meat eaters should also check their b12 as well, but vegans take your b12!
    And eat almost twice as much because you will be getting less calories otherwise because your not having an excess of protein fat and sugar in your diets.
    Cook at home is the best thing you can do for yourselves.
    Take it slow, fibre will always give you symptoms if you go from 5g a day to only eating plants and getting 50 to 100g a day

  • This isn’t about health but it is related to vegetarians, and vegans. So a lot of people don’t eat meat because of animal cruelty and they don’t want to be responsible for their deaths.

    I have a question, what happens to the animal species that are specifically bread to be eaten, wouldn’t they go extinct, a lot of animals that are hunted like panda aren’t eaten by masses so they aren’t bred in mass. So they are going extinct.

  • Learning so much from your vlogs. Great info concerning Atkins vs. South Beach. On my Phentermine program, I’m allowed one strachy carbs (bread/cereal/rice etc) one portion with every meal. Not that I don’t adore carbs, but 3 times a day seems a lot to me. I would try either Atkins or South Beach diet in replace of my meal plan, if I’ll see quicker results. If a patient is on Phentermine 37.5 mg, which diet plan do you suggest? Atkins or South Beach? Thx:)

  • Great video, but you forgot to mention something for all the vegan haters out there who will look for anything for meat to be superior. B12 is a vitamin ONLY made in soil. The only reason B12 is in meat is because animals eat some soil when eating grass. In primitive days, humans wouldn’t wash their veg and would therefore be eating B12 from traces of soil on the veg. The only reason we Vegans have to supplement B12 nowadays is because of the modern way we pesticide and decontaminate veg. We kill the B12 before it gets to our bodies. So in other words, its modern day processes that makes Vegan have to supplement when in the wild our ancestors wouldn’t have had to….. So in other words, theres nothing wrong with the vegan diet, it’s the way food is processed in modern day society.

  • All ketones in your urine tell you is that you’re urinating ketones. A better indication of being in ketosis is to use a glucometer.

  • Carbs dont make you fat. Pretty much every athlete on the planet eats high carb diets. If you eat high protein and no carbs and you get into ketosis your body is going to produce glycogen through Gluconeogensis and its going to take muscle from your body. Keto is stupid af

  • I don’t agree with what she says. The all or nothing approach isn’t very practical in either direction low fat or low carb. If your over Weight ultra low fat (<10% calories from fat, >80% from carbs) works best. That was how I lost 45lbs without dieting or counting calories or going hungry. But after about two years eating that way for some reason I stated to slowly gain the weight back (as in, 10lbs gained in a year). But I’m still very good weight wise. I got almost too thin eating ultra low fat, then I was having hormonal problems, lost menstration, heart arrhythmia. I have no clue what is causing those issues but upping my fat to a more balanced 60% carbs, 30% fat or so (I don’t worry about protein… it’s in everything I eat) I found my body feels much better. My weight gains have stopped and even gone back down a little. So I think it’s simply a matter of eating a Balanced diet, of whole natural unprocessed foods. Skip the soda, potato chips and Doritos and opt instead for brown rice with steamed vegetables, sautéed tofu topped with a cashew cream sauce.

  • You didn’t mention a few pitfalls. Cardiovascular disease is one. Veganism is good for lowering cholesterol, but some people have one that is too low from their vegan diet.
    The vitamin deficiencies should’ve been talked about more. There is more than just B12(which is a definitely a major one, and the supplements are usually derived from animals)
    Also stones! Leafy greens cause lots of gallbladder and kidney stones, which does have the potential to be deadly. Lots of vegans have to stop from stones, some even having to remove their gallbladders.

  • I’m fine with vegetarian diets, but vegans need to eat sooooo many different things just to have a balanced diet. Besides, just because you aren’t eating animals doesn’t mean companies are just gonna start killing less. Veganism is completely pointless

  • Sprouts are one of the healthiest things to eat… easiest things to grow, too! Just be sure to clean well before eating. I suggest blanching with noodles for a minute.
    It wouldnt hurt you to try your hand at a greens patch somewhere in your yard or even just a pot. Soil is uber important, compost. It helps with b12…

  • I think you might be fine if you just eat meat 2 or 3 times a week.
    That way you get your iron and B12 but not enough of all the bad things, while you can get all the other vitamins and things you need from fruits and vegetables.

  • High Protein diets won’t put you into Ketosis. Protein will cause am insulin spike (not as much as carbs, but will still spike) and become glycogen, which stops ketosis. You also have to lower your protein content as well and increase your fat.

  • Veganism is a lifestyle and not a diet. And so it’s not about health, it’s about ethics. If you eat a plant based diet but still exploit animals in other parts of your life then you’re not vegan. Period.
    Also ALL plants contain ALL the essential amino acids but in various amounts. So as long as you eat a variety of foods and eat enough calories, you should get enough protein in your diet:)

  • Well now… there’s peer reviewed studies showing vegans are at a higher risk of some forms of cancer. The healthiest diet consists of all food groups… more veggies, less meat and way less sugar. Meat has nutrition benefits that just aren’t found in a vegan diet… honestly does anyone believe most heart disease patients ate a well balanced diet? Excess of anything is bad.

  • Huh? For ketosis you need to be eating high fat moderate protien low carb. High protien kicks you out of ketosis.. and excess protien breaks down into glucose!
