Most psyllium husk supplements are unflavored but some manufacturers add artificial berry, pink lemonade, or orange flavoring to improve the taste. Psyllium husk is also used to control blood sugar spikes after a meal, lower cholesterol, decrease appetite, improve blood flow, and decrease the body’s absorption of carbohydrates. Psyllium is a form of fiber made from the husks of the Plantago ovata plant’s seeds. It sometimes goes by the name ispaghula.

It’s most commonly known as a laxative. However, research shows that. Psyllium is a natural shrub-like herb used to make psyllium seed husk products which are most commonly used for natural constipation relief. They are also used for diarrhea, to lower cholesterol, manage blood sugar, lower blood pressure, and weight management.

Psyllium powder can be taken in water or another liquid by itself. Psyllium husk comes from the seeds of a plantain variety in the genus Plantago. Plantains (not related to the plantain banana) are one of the most widely dispersed wild herbs in the world. Common plantain or Plantago major have been used historically by herbalists for centuries as a nutritious edible and medicinal plant.

The most common use of Psyllium seed husks in the United States is for its soluble and insoluble fiber content. A fair amount of research exists on the cardiovascular benefits of fiber when used in conjunction with a modified diet and lifestyle.*. Hence, to reduce high cholesterol, take 1 tsp. psyllium husk three times a day. 11.

Benefits Of Psyllium Husk – Heart Health. Psyllium husk has some heart health benefits when used regularly. In fact, the fiber content in this husk helps to reduce cholesterol levels, which, in turn, helps to protect your heart. Traditional uses and benefits of Psyllium Psyllium has been used as a safe and effective laxative for thousands of years in Western herbal medicine.

Both the dried seeds and the seed husks are demulcent, emollient and laxative. Psyllium husk — or psyllium powder, which is simply the ground-up husks — comes from the seeds of the herb Plantago ovata, and is usually sold as a fiber supplement, but it also acts as a bulk-forming laxative. If you’re going to take a laxative, psyllium is one of the simplest and shows promise for providing a few other health benefits too. Psyllium /ˈsɪliəm/, or ispaghula (isabgol) /ˌɪspəˈɡuːlə/, is the common name used for several members of the plant genus Plantago whose seeds are used commercially for the production of mucilage.

Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fiber to relieve symptoms of both constipation and mild diarrhea, and occasionally as a food thickener. It is commonly used as a food ingredient in manufactured breakfast cereals which may contribute to a healthy lifestyle by improving blood cho. Bentonite and psyllium are used together as part of cleansing program.

Proponents of cleanses believe shakes made from these ingredients will ease the discomfort of constipation and diarrhea, ease indigestion pain, and rid the body of parasites, bacteria, and viruses.

    But now I found out we were curing few issues and causing some more issues same time.
    Such as not taking enough water. Gas problem.
    Iron deficiency.
    Also in constipation some people consume this as a cure but now I got it why they end up in more problems.

    The second time I had acute diarrhea & vomiting to the point that I had to go to the ER & was put on a saline drip, anti-diarrheal & anti-nausea medication & they sent me home with Ondansetron which I had to use for a week…

  • When taking psyllium seed husks, pour your glass of water, (your liquid), then quickly pour your measured amount of psyllium, stir quickly, and get it down. If you are slow, it will congeal, and you will almost have to eat it, which I find unpleasant. 0lenty of water, one day, you will forget that, and semi-damp psyllium will attach to your esophagus, draw moisture from the surface, and get stuck. It will dislodge, but drink plenty of water with it. Take it in a smallish glass of water, stir quick, swallow, then drink plenty of water.

  • Mix psyllium husk in coffee along with unsweetened cocoa powder unsweetened bakers chocolate and a fat of choice ( butter, heavy cream etc ) sweetener of choice blend and chill will make a keto chocolate pudding

B-2, it must be replenished daily as B and C are water soluble vitamins! A, D, E, and K are fat soluable vitamins, meanung they are, and retained by the fatty tissues!!   • Hi Dr. Berg, I find frustration because you have many videos that advise which vitamins and supplements to take. All the lists are different. Here is an idea for a video: • A comprehensive list of all vitamins/ Minerals/ Supplements necessary. You could have 2nor 3 lists, 1.) All necessary vitamins/ Minerals/ Supplements, 2.) Minimum and maximum amounts. I want to utilize just below the maximum in starting out, 3.) Important supplements to focus on to fulfill multiple requirements, (e.g.; Nutritional Yeast fulfills multiple Vitamin B requirements), 4.) Vegetable fulfillments, (Separate Video?), A comprehensive list of vegetables and percentage of each nutrient per oz., or other unit.
    I am trying to revisit certain videos, Wade through some videos repeating nutrients, some having completely different nutrients…
    I am a member. I paid for a year. I have barely used it these many months. I started,…. I started to get on Keto. I was sent to videos that taught me beginners concepts, like don’t lose weight to lose weight, eat healthy. It’s like signing 9n to a Calculus class, and having classes, “1 + 1 = 2, 1 + 2 = 3, 1 + 2 = 3, 1 + 3 = 4,…” I don’t want to take a course in remedial nutrition, I want the advanced keto and OMAD, concicely and thoroughly, and organized, not some vitamins in chapter 2, others in chapter 4, extras in chapter 10. All vitamins in one section.

  • Nice video, great demonstration. Just fyi there are studies that show reducing fiber intake can reduce or eliminate constipation. Also I’ve seen multiple people eating high fiber diets (because they think its healthy to do) develop SBO.

    I think psyllium is a good tool for keto cooking but its nutritional benefits are questionable.

  • It needs to be 100% mixed in water.
    If not you might get a wet lump that is dry in the middle.
    This could latch on somewhere in your digestive system.
    It might then burst, releasing the dry insides that will swell and form a blockage.
    It won’t last for life, but it might give some discomfort next day or two.

  • Uh constipation is one of the side effects!?! That would be like taking anti-depressants and the side effect is depression. I can’t wrap my mind around how that is logical.

  • Chronic extreme emotional stress attacks and panic attacks gave me heart problems..magnesum supplements make things worse so are most carbs giving me tachycardia what can i do to fix that? Salads help but still get arythmia attacks and chronic fatigue is always there.

  • I use whole psyllium husk & ground flax seed as a substitute for bread crumbs in my keto meatballs & meatloaf… I use 18 grams of each, mixed with 2 oz of water, for every pound of ground beef. Of course it’s not as good as the evil wheat, but it does the job!

    I received your product (vitamine D3 & K2). It is really great, but doctor, when I eat it in breakfast with olive oil, I improve by 80% because I have calcium deposited in the salivary glands area, which causes me to swell in that area and thus my face changes slightly when swelling, but when I take vitamins that goes The swelling disappears but is not complete and when I wake up in the morning I find the salivary glands swollen again which means that calcium is deposited again knowing that my vitamin D level is 20.8. (Not enough)
    And I want to know, Doctor, where is the problem, is it in vitamins or poor absorption?
    I want the bulge to go away permanently and my face to look normal.

  • It hasn’t done much for me and it bloats me terribly. I’m drinking a tea called smooth move that has worked for other people. Maybe I should cut down on the 2 tablespoons of psyllium husk to 1 tablespoon or maybe it’s in the meta-Meusel itself that is the problem.

  • Take only for 4 to 5 days and then stop and after 10-15 days do same. Regular consumption will cause appetite loss and gas formation as it cold in nature. Long term usage will make body heat to go out and it will lead nerve weakness. Enjoy in moderation. It’s cleaning and detoxification medicine not tonic.

  • Sorry I didn’t understand can you please clarify. You mean drinking 1 tbsp plus one cup of water for 3 times. That means 3 tbsp of psyllium husk with 3 cups???

  • Problems with psyllium husk is it is a laxative. You have to be careful not to use very large amount in recipes. Unless you like sitting on the toilet all the next day. Cut the amount in a recipe by half and substitute the other half with ground flax seed. Not only will it affect you so strongly the flax will help take the egg taste out of your Breads and dose. Try it and think you’ll be happy with it. Or maybe you just like sitting in the bathroom looking at YouTube recipes all day.

  • Psyllium husk is the main ingredient in Metamucil, used to lower cholesterol and blood sugar. It acts as a mild bile acid sequestrant, preventing the reabsorption of bile that has emulsified dietary fat in the intestines. The bile is made in the liver from LDL-cholesterol pulled from the blood. Instead of being reabsorbed (its natural intended purpose), it is excreted out in feces.

    This is just one of many effects it has in the body.

  • I tried this for lowering my cholesterol, after about 4 months, my cholesterol was down 10% from 229 to 109. I just took 1 tsp per day of psyllium (not Metamucil as it has all kinds of other stuff in it). Plus, I’ve had all the other benefits 😉

    I just measured out 7 grams and it’s just under 1 tablespoon. We appreciate it when you add amounts!

    Adding fiber to carbs slows down the glucose response to less of a spike and more of a bump. This will positively effect the Insulin also.

    one quart & shake & drink ALL within 15 seconds.
    relax & let it get in2 the intestine. THEN go out & do hard physical work all day. the magic happens… @ night or next day a solid tube impression of yur intestine comes out full of AAALOT’a old weird shit & stuff. FEELS FANTASTIC afterwards… great relief 2 get the intestine very cleaned out.

  • My Doc explained that Net Carbs are like taking over the counter medicine whereas Total Carbs is like taking prescription strength medicine.

  • So I understand that you cannot interchange whole psyllium husk and powder in recipes because they “measure” differently when using cups measurements. However, what if I interchange them via gram measure and not cups measure. Like, I would sub 20g of whole husks to 20g of powder husk? What difference in my baked product’s texture and taste would that make? I have been researching about this, but no one is saying anything about the taste and texture.

  • I take psyllium husk every single day. It has gotten rid of my constipation. It doesn’t give me gas like the drugs the doctors give me. My cholesterol was 190 and it’s down to 160 in just one month. My blood pressure was 129/80 and now its 119/70. My pre-diabetes is gone. My blood sugar was over 250 and now it’s around 120. I’m no longer pre-diabetic. I started at 355 lbs and I’m currently down to 317 lbs. I’m off my IBD meds. No more symptoms. I am no longer high risk for colon cancer. I’m just so happy to get rid of the constipation. I’m losing weight well. I am no longer worried I’m going to get colon cancer.

  • You need to drink a glass of water or juice straight after you took the husk because it swells up so much.
