Beta Alanine and Exercise Performance: A Science to Practice Overview

Video taken from the channel: Institute of Performance Nutrition

New Study: Beta-Alanine Improves Strength. When it comes to pre-workout supplementswith considerable human research behind them, the list is extremely sparse. One of those precious, proven commodities is beta-alanine, which has long been known as the endurance supplement.

Prized for its ability to increase carnosine levels, prolong stamina, and reduce “the burning” sensation that slams your muscles during training, beta-alanine. New study shows beta-alanine may also help improve strength Study conclusion. The improvement observed at 1RM was explained by a greater load lifted, or strength gain, in response The study. While the results of this experiment are certainly exciting, it’s important to get a full sense of how.

Beta-alanine improves athletic performance by reducing fatigue, increasing endurance and boosting performance in high-intensity exercises. Increases Time to Exhaustion. For example, Hoffman et al found that 6.0 g of β-Alanine for 28 days improved tactical performance and jumping ability, but not serial subtraction test time in soldiers. 6.4 g/day was found to improve upper-body Wingate bouts. According to some research, beta-alanine can improve strength and enhance endurance performance over longer periods of time, too, but more research is needed.

Daily supplementation with 3.2–6.4 grams of beta-alanine over the course of 2–4 weeks loads the muscles with carnosine and improves performance. Oral nutritional supplement fortified with beta-alanine improves physical working capacity in older adults: a randomized, placebo-controlled study. This study examined the effects of an oral nutritional supplement fortified with two different doses of beta-alanine on body composition, muscle function and physical capacity in older adults. One final study proves that when it comes to boosting performance, beta-alanine is a must-have. Study: Beta-Alanine Boosted Strength in Boxers.

If you’re a fighter, whether that be a boxer, martial artist, or MMA fighter, you will definitely want to add beta-alanine to your supplement list ASAP according to a new study from the UK. Another study by this group [22] examined the effects of creatine alone, β-ALA and creatine combined and placebo supplementation for 10-weeks in strength power athletes. The researchers reported some beneficial effects on improvements in strength and lean tissue accretion from β-ALA and/or creatine supplementation. Beta-alanine supplements are thought to boost the production of carnosine and, in turn, boost sports performance. However, a review of studies of the beta-alanine supplement shows that it doesn’t.

Studies on beta-alanine supplementation and exercise performance have demonstrated improvements in performance during multiple bouts of high-intensity exercise and in single bouts of exercise lasting more than 60 s. Similarly, beta-alanine supplementation has been shown to delay the onset of neuromuscular fatigue.

My take on beta-alanine is that if you participate in high-intensity training, competition, or both, it’s worth a try.

Thus, supplementing with beta—alanine would cause an increase in carnosine stores, which could then provide a buffering mechanism during training.

  • I wanna do natural classic physique without juicing Because I read and did research on natural bodybuilding and they do use and I just wanna get big without juicing

  • Tip:
I haven’t read anyone mentioning it in previous comments, but, I drop b-alanine + creatine into my thermos everyday (1.5L) along with my tea, I sip it throughout the day, so i don’t have the “tingling’ sensation at all, which IMO is a bother during the training.

  • Been taking two grams for a while… I bought it alone and took my first three gram dose for the second day and I have this funny hive looking thing on the side of my eye bro just under where my ball cap sits. It doesn’t hurt its not itchy, although I do have some itch at the bottom of my right forearm no big deal…OH! I did skip a training training day and took nothing recently so just wondering if you’ve heard of that…. I like this product I do notice a difference in the gym will continue to take hopefully this worm like looking thing goes away soon…. up go 6 grams a day huh. Oh yeah do you have a brand you like or find the best bang for your buck? Store I got my stuff at only had muscle tech…40 bucks 129 servings, but have seen one s like rhino 1000 servings for the same price let me know. Thanks for the video, sorry for the mini series.

  • Jerry is very knowledgeable. I subscribed to his newsletter and he responds to all my questions within hours of submitting them. My gains are loyal following his advises. Have been getting a lot of compliments lately.

  • Took 10 grams of beta alanine before my workout, threw up behind the gym

Doubled my pre, took it in creatine and took straight up beta alanine powder all at once
    Oops

  • So take any time any time of day just make sure to get all doses in one day. Plus creatine after workout? Sounds easy enough. Im lean and work out but i am small 5ft 6 and on my feet moving around all day. 3 grams sounds good no more? Or someone my size should take less?

  • I took 12 grams today I’m 280 lb oh my God am I going to die LOL I want to take about 5 grams about 20 minutes after I take a bunch of niacin

  • These short and informative videos about supplamints are great Mark. I ordered your creatine thanks to your creatine video. Absolutely no stomach bloat or upset stomach from that creatin (Which is why I stopped taking creatine years ago). Keep doing your thing brother.

  • I’ve been using beta alinine for years, currently 210lbs & Even a 1 gram dosage I feel. Ford that mean my body is still getting this parethesis effect?
I usually buy now supplements beta alinine, watch your videos, never bought any of your products before. I’ll buy some of yours just Bc I’m pretty sure your American, employing Americans vs a big cooperate company

  • I take the 5g scoop with 5g of creatine in my post protein shake I always notice no tingles if it’s within say the 30-45 minutes of training.. but on my rest days where I’m just sitting about at home I actually always end up, never taking it cba to go through the taste, grittiness and the tingles.
would that day of not taking it per week screw up the effects of creatine/beta alanine?
follow all the vids love the info
    appreciate it Jerry!

  • anyone in boxing, wrestling or any other martial art needs to take beta alanine. after 3 weeks or so it is in your system and starts working the way it should work. makes you feel like you are not tired even if you are breathing like a dog

  • Beta alanine is something that I know it works every single time. I am addicted to beta alanine weights are levitating just by looking at them.

  • What are some ways to lost crazy amounts of fat? I read plenty of great reviews on the net about how Custokebon Secrets will help you lost lots of fat. Has anybody tested out this popular fat burn diet plan?

  • Hi, great video thank you. I have a question. I am going to do a blood exam in the next months for employment reasons for law enforcement. Could the Beta-alanine jeopardize the results? Because they will look for drugs and steroids. Thank you

  • Thanks alot. I have a question about the duration one should consume BA. As we know, muscle carnosine levels reach to an acceptable levels after a couple of month of supplementing. How long do you recommend supplementaion, and after this period, should one discontinue BA?

  • The next video should be about the benefits of spirulina and chlorela. in my opinion are far superior than any other plant in the world.

  • So is it better to take just the beta alanine alone as a preworkout… Or an actual preworkout that has caffeine and all the other stuff in it???

  • So you create “science for supplement companies” “design studies to substantiate their claims” lolol so some supplement company develops a product but then gets it researched after to verify it actually works?! What a joke this industry is, how about stop scamming people for money.

  • anyone in boxing, wrestling or any other martial art needs to take beta alanine. after 3 weeks or so it is in your system and starts working the way it should work. makes you feel like you are not tired even if you are breathing like a dog

Will u plz make a review on Iso sensation 93 whey isolate? The technology they adopt is Iso Chill. What is that? Is the product is really effective?

  • This is fucking awesome! Just found you channel and I subbed.. no doubt!: ]
Very clear, understandeble and logic, I like it. Big thanks. I already take Beta Alanine but to get in more info depth is always good!

One big supp I would like to get more info about is definitely Collostrum!
How it boosts the hormone IGF-1 naturally, what dosage, health benefits etc.

  • I bought some C4 pre-workout powder and it does contain Beta Alanine And I’ve never felt so sick in my life the shakes and headaches was not good.

  • Great video! Should you supplement BA only on workout day’s or stay on it like creatine? If on off day’s, what dose and what timing would you suggest?

  • With 4-6g a day for a 64% increase of muscle carnosine levels after a month or 80% increase after 10 weeks and a 1.1 -1.2g dose a day to keep levels topped off after, I wonder if the studies done on performance followed this protocol waiting until the loading phase was done to see if performance increased rather than just seeing if it did during the beginning stages of supplementation?

  • What is the best time to use beta alanine im using it intraworkout wid bcaa.? Is it the right way to use beta alanine..? Or i should consume beta alanine pre workout.? Please help

  • The first time I took beta alanine the parasthesia effect was potent, I could feel tingles all over my body, my ears my fingers, everything tingled. But its not painful, just a bit unusual., After taking it for months, that effect is very minimal now, I get a tiny bit of tingle and it’s barely noticeable and sometimes with food non-existent

  • Dr.Gerry I trust your knowledge.I loved your pre workout video regarding Baking soda+creatine+200-400mgs of caffiene+beet juice to promote Nitrous Oxide release.I used the 1st three without beet juice 1 hour prior to lifting.I definately had more endurance&stamina.I tried it prior to tapping a booty call female.Works good.I dont like pre workout supps that leave U wired up.U R my go to for advice on what to take and more impt what not to injest.Allmost 60 and still lifting.Loving life in Canada.✌

  • So is it better to take just the beta alanine alone as a preworkout… Or an actual preworkout that has caffeine and all the other stuff in it???

  • So the question is… how can I make my liver healthier, instead of throwing amino acids on top of it.
And what supplements are most effective outside of this spectrum.

  • Good info Jerry. I started using Beta Alanine a month ago 5 grams a day. I am able to exceed my burn reps. The tingles are almost gone. Your a wealth of info!

  • Question… Im doing some caliesthenic training… I will soon train for only 2 months at the gym… Ill be doing the starting strenght program+ bicycle for 1 hs a day… And i will need as much energy as i can for that… I was thinking about taking ginseng+cafeine… Do you think this suplement and maybe creatine would help me? What other suplements should i consider?

  • Very Well sir..so informative..
Will u plz make a review on Iso sensation 93 whey isolate? The technology they adopt is Iso Chill. What is that? Is the product is really effective?

  • everyone’s biochem is a lil diff in how substances effect them. for example jerry u said the research shows that about 3% at best makes it into muscle. i don’t know if more than that makes it into my muscles or maybe that just that 3% has a significant effect in my training. i respond very well to beta Alanine and see drastic effect in increased volume/work capacity in the gym. 2 grms about 2 or 3 times a day

  • He could do these in 3 minutes yeah, but I believe the whole point of these videos is not just to find out whether something works or not but to understand the mechanism by which it works. If you only want short sound bites of information Generation Iron have plenty of other videos or articles that are short and snappy. This is for people who like understanding rather than just knowing. Bye now

  • HI Jerry. My question is that a lot of scientists say Beta Alanine is good only after 60s.So it is useful for endurance athletes.Your thoughts on that? When we have that maintenance phase I suppose that 2g is than not enough.Do we have to take all the time that much what you have benn suggesting for better absorption? Thanks

  • the side effect of paresthesia is a little more serious than “a little bit of tingling in your fingers and forearms” for some people… granted im sure it goes away once you build up a tolerance.

  • I’m not an expert. But beta-alanine bioavailability is higher when taken with food. So you could for example take a glass of water with beta alanine with a meal after workout. And I’m not so sure about the thing he says that beta alanine is needed to take before a workout. It will NOT easily get washed out of the body.

Actually you could after some time lower your dose to a maintenance dose where you take less than the normal 3-6 grams pr day. I’ve seen one report mentioning 18 milligram pr kg of bodyweight. For me as a 70 kg guy that is 1,25 gram pr day. But more research is needed.

  • Hi, great video thank you. I have a question. I am going to do a blood exam in the next months for employment reasons for law enforcement. Could the Beta-alanine jeopardize the results? Because they will look for drugs and steroids. Thank you

  • does it have other bennefits not work out related? I’ve noticed huge increase in mental focus… but also it stresses me out a bit ahah

  • I have to comment on this one: Isn’t the supplementation of BA actually not timing-dependent? Dr. Kalman if I heard right, said it IS…
    What is your opinion?

I really like what you’re doing here! Great job!

  • does it mess with your heart rate? my heart rate gets very high when i run…. or do hit work out. should i be taking this while working out?

  • Can some ppl be none responders like with Creatine? I’ve tried multiple brands of pure B-A and multiple brands of pre-workout and dosages up to 8g and have never felt that tingling feeling everyone talks about. Others I know from my gym tried the same brands and did..

  • Absolutely awesome as always!!!! Off topic here but I wasn’t sure any other media to get this question across. its for mike zourdos “perhaps you have already filmed this” Basically I have been trying to find this answer for a while. When using DUP and APRE to progress do you just keep pushing the weights up throughout each block or do you push weights up through the 3 week block, deload, then retest rep maxes, calculate the estimated 1 rep max reset percentages and then push weights up using APRE for another 3 weeks. I’ve been just driving them up. So if my training max is 200kg and I add 7.5kg using APRE through the 3 weeks then I deload then set my percentages off a 207.5kg training max. I’m not sure if I should be resetting off say a 3 rep max for every block.I hope this makes sense. Maybe you have suggestionslove the channel

  • Taking baking soda in general is a very bad idea. It may work as a buffer with beta alanine but at what cost? Our stomach acid levels naturally decrease with age and baking soda can damage the stomach’s natural balance very quickly. Stomach acid is required in the right amounts and the right ph(1-3) in order to absorb the most nutrients from our foods. Baking soda will raise stomach ph making to dangerous levels and help create a home for nasty gut microbes such as h-pylori. Bad gut bacteria that will damage your intestinal lining thrives in a less acidic environment.

  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic I have more time to cycle for longer periods of time, which is great. The issue is without my pre-workout I hit a wall and can’t get past 45-47 miles.

With pre-workout I average 60 miles and if I push myself to the absolute limit I get close to 72. My issue is I can’t stop itching afterwards. It feels like I push myself during every ride but even when I’m riding close to my personal best, I finish my ride and the itch returns. Is this normal or is pre-work not for cycling?

  • There always seems to be a new ‘miracle supplement’ pushed. And many people are gullible enough to buy it, thinking they’ll be massive in record time. I remember reading an interview once featuring Gregg Valentino. He said in the interview that if a guy like Jay Cutler says that he eats dog crap to get huge, everyone will be eating dog crap to get huge. I may be wrong regarding Jay Cutler. It may have been a different guy, I’m not always the best in remembering names. But Gregg was right in his analogy of how everyone will try anything thinking it’s their prayer coming true for being the best with the least effort.

  • What I find that works for me in my protein drink, is two scoops of whey Isolate = 54 grams of protein, 3 grams of L Leucine, 5 grams of creatine, 5 grams of beta alanine, and I am good to go.

Bye now

  • I bought some C4 pre-workout powder and it does contain Beta Alanine And I’ve never felt so sick in my life the shakes and headaches was not good.

  • A very balanced conversation about the science of being healthy, sleep benefits, prebiotics and probiotics. Don’t forget its not about popping a probiotic, get into the old traditional ways of using fermented foods there are a billion more living probiotics in a teaspoon of sauerkraut than in a manufactured pill. We are only on the tip of the iceberg about knowing how the gut microbiome controls and affects us. We are made up more of bugs/microbiome than our own cells.

  • So you create “science for supplement companies” “design studies to substantiate their claims” lolol so some supplement company develops a product but then gets it researched after to verify it actually works?! What a joke this industry is, how about stop scamming people for money.

  • does it have other bennefits not work out related? I’ve noticed huge increase in mental focus… but also it stresses me out a bit ahah

  • i dont get a tingle, only in my pee pee. jokes but seriously i take 4000 mg and no tingle. im sure its working but maybe my body is mutated and different???

  • Is parathesia sign its in the muscle or just the blood? Then if in muscles how long till its allowed muscles to build up carnesine which is the product ur after?

  • Good info Jerry. I started using Beta Alanine a month ago 5 grams a day. I am able to exceed my burn reps. The tingles are almost gone. Your a wealth of info!

  • Lax defiantly reduced aches and pains in old injuries and fatigue in muscles from repetitive movements e.g. back pain from digging etc. Strength and over all recovery not sure. So maybe more an anti-inflammatory effect? I’ve heard it touted to work on the mTOR pathway.

  • I’ve never used steroids but I’m 27 with suppressed test from recreational drug use, I started epicatichen a test booster laxogenin and glycolog. And the first day my strength was thru the roof will update later

  • Laxogenin definitely does not give “steroid-like” results. I’ve used laxogenin before, along with epicatechin and arachidonic acid. I can’t say any of these gave huge increases in size. Arachidonic acid did help with my deadlift strength though.
    Next up: Phosphatidic acid.

For the beta-alanine is it supposed to be 6.4g rather than 6.4mg?
