  • My advice is to get hooked up with a good and comprehensive diabetes program. I’m not sure why you think you can’t have sugar. You can. You can eat almost anything that anyone else eats.

    With my son, I restrict fruit juice and pop. That’s it. He eats everything that everyone else does. And his A1C was perfectly on target within 4 months of diagnosis.

    The sugar restriction for type 1 diabetics is based on old thoughts. The data is pretty clear that glycemic control is what is important. As long as you control the blood sugars, you can eat what you want. That means being really active with insulin dosing and sugar monitoring.

    I restrict pop and fruit juice because it causes a faster spike in blood sugar that is harder to deal with. But I’m not religious about it. I take my 3 boys to the movies frequently. I get them the exact same stuff (i.e. Treats) now as before. Typically juice, popcorn, and candy. And I watch the sugar like a hawk. I can get through a whole movie like that with blood sugars staying around 120.

    Now, this ain’t an excuse to eat badly in general. In just saying the rules do not change when you are diagnosed as a type 1. Some treats are still just fine. You don’t have to have a special (read: disgusting) birthday cake for your birthday. You eat the regular cake and ice cream. But you don’t eat shit for every meal just like nobody should. Eat well and ear like a regular person.

    I was devastated when my son was diagnosed. I thought he was destined to die early and lead a really restrictive life. None of that is true. Treated properly. His life expectancy should be normal. And he does exactly what all the other kids do.

  • It may be that living a low carb lifestyle is a skill that must be developed over time. Just like anything else, your not very good at doing anything at first but over time you get better and better. That may be the key. Trial and error until you find what works for you. A Korean friend once told me it takes about 30 days for your body to properly adapt to a new way of eating. So don’t expect to be an expert at low carb living over night. It takes time. However don’t forget to drink lots and lots of water. Most people don’t drink anything even remotely close to enough water. It’s really basic but so very vital to healthy living. You need that water to flush your system out of all the toxins in the digestive system. All those chemical reactions to convert food to energy produce waste and that waste needs to be flushed out every day.

    Can you throw guidance on my dietary needs with regard to hypothyroidism. I’m a mature 70yr old lady and finding satiety is the key to staying away from excess carbohydrates and sugars.

    Fortunately I enjoy certain salads in the warmer weather especially that are easy to digest.
    I use Olive oil and avocado oil with added nuts to my diet Brazil’s, walnuts and almonds in small quantities.
    I’ve looked at diets for hypothyroidism, anti inflammatory Keto, intermittent fasting to name a few! I have to be careful with brassicas,
    soya, bean sprouts, some grains, omitting legumes. I have to go steady with the onion family garlic etc…
    Onion and garlic are good for home made vegetable soup, mildly spiced but I have to go steady on root vegetables.
    Please can you give some of your expertise on things mentioned.
    I used slippery elm, gia seed puddings made with organic almond milk, took supplements Lglutamine, cut down on meats, dairy cut out alcohol completely because of a non alcoholic liver and my hypothyroidism.
    Constipation has been an issue. Fresh lemon in warm water help with peristalsis in the mornings.
    I do have pure organic coffee in the morning which also helps kick start my day.

  • I was with you until you recommended the processed salad dressing. That stuff almost always has sugar, bad fat and preservative chemicals. Best to make your own Caesar dressing from natural ingredients including sour cream and homemade mayo made with a healthy oil. Or use olive, liberally. So plugging it for money and misleading people? Most people will only hear yay I can be healthy and douse my salad with lot of store bought dressing. I’m disappointed in this channel for this.

    I watched your video today and couldn’t agree more of everything you said. Simply put, we just have to avoid processed foods in our daily diet. Couple of tips you failed mention “eating out”. We’ve become so affluent as Americans that most of us eat our three to four times per week if we don’t actually eat out, we order in takes outs and deliveries. I also took particular interest in your comment about chewing our foods, at least 40 time. Tonight, we had grass fed beef steaks, stir fried home grown veggies zucchini, onions and squash, tomato salad with sliced mozzarella cheese and Japanese rice. I carefully counted my chews and discovered that rice and steak required the most chews over 70, while chewing mozzarella cheese and tomatoes required about 40 before they became totally liquified and slid down my esophagus. so your rule of 40 chews need to be adjusted for the particular food one happens to be chewing. I also think Americans eat way too big portions. Typical Asian entrees have 2 to 4 ounces of beef, fish, chicken but the typical American entree call for two to three times that. Look at most recipes they will call for 6 ounces of beef per serving. Your video will cause us to start making our own pasta sauces and salad dressings instead of the store bought, prepared stuff and read the labels before we but. Lastly, I never realized the benefit of green tea. Wife and I prefer red wine but I will definitely begin drinking more green tea. Thanks for your research.
