A new weight loss study has found that night fasting from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. may be one way to achieve weight loss success. But is fasting for weight loss healthy? Nutritionist Cynthia Sass takes a.

If you’re paying attention to your emotional being during a fast, many doors will be opened. If you’re a healthy adult with weight to lose, there’s little evidence to say that intermittent fasting isn’t safe.

However, fasting isn’t for everyone and you shouldn’t try it if you are pregnant, diabetic or healing from a traumatic event like surgery. Still iffy about whether fasting is a good choice for you?

  • each one says their own theory about health and weight loss, well ur best doctor for ur own body. so follow what ur body tells you. some feel very hungry in the morning, then eat in the morning have healthy food. some feel hungry at 11am and 6pm so eat at that time healthy guilt free food. and excessive regularly.

    Anyway, I’ve been doing intermittent fasting on calorie deficit (one meal per day with very minimal snacks, just mouthful I think during the feasting period) since the lockdown with simple home workouts. I was amazed I lost 20 pounds within 3 months. My BMI category changed from overweight-to-near-obese to normal.

    Edit: You might ask how I was able to curb my hunger (I really eat a lot, like a food for 3 average persons isn’t enough for me). I’ve been doing “water therapy”. I think I can drink around 2 gallons of water per day, most drinks happen during the fasting period.

  • I hate IF. It does not work for me as a long term solution. I get cranky and am constantly thinking about food. I can’t make it work with a family with two kids who are on a different eating schedule. I compensate when it’s finally ‘okay’ to eat.
    Instead I eat 5 times a day and choose lower calorie options when I want to lose weight. I track what I eat. IF is overrated.

  • This video is so outdated lol. Fasting doesn’t effect your metabolism and your body will not hold on to calories. Your body will turn to stored fat for energy and when it needs glucose it’ll take a Lil from fat, protein etc and convert it into glucose. The brain needs at least 20 to 30% glucose to operate while the other 70 to 80% it will utilize fat to thrive. Metabolism is effected by age, lack of nutrition and if you’re active or not. Not eating a bunch of small meals a day.

  • Been doing fasting protocols for about 6 years now daily. Typically I’ll do 20/4 and do one extended fast of 44-48hrs every 3-4 weeks. I personally love training fasted and have hit strength PR’s regularly. I mean shit..one time I did 10×10 squats and hill sprints after at 40hrs fasted. It all comes down to mindset in all honesty and black coffee.

  • Don’t skip lunch. Either skip breakfast or dinner. Because you need to eat two consecutive meals within a period of 8 hours. if you skip lunch you end up with more than 8 hours: e.g. breakfast at 8 am and dinner at 6 pm (10 hours apart). This shortens your fasting window, which is not what you want.

  • For 2 weeks I did the keto diet, then intermittent fasting for 30 days, lost 6 pounds and then extended fast no solid food for 24 days and lost 26 pounds. My first 35 pounds of weight loss was done without exercise other than walking. Total weight loss to date is 50 lbs, My recommendation is a keto foundation followed by a rotation of intermittent fasting, one meal a day, and extended fast for 5 to 7 days. This gives the body’s G.I. tract a chance to rest also allows for hormones to be rebalanced and human growth hormone and stem cell growth accelerated during the extended fast. The video just discredits dietitians and nutritionist as being old-school and not really in tune with what really works. Starvation mode only happens when you start say a water fast and start eating or drinking a small amount of calories.

    We can now also begin to understand what must be one of the fundamental, underlying contributors to human and animal disease-the arthritis, the cancer, the heart disease, the neurological diseases, and much more.

    Note that what you have just read here is not yet understood by either the general population or by professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, dietitians, nutritionists, veterinarians, or even by most within the alternative / complementary / natural healing professions.

  • I’m terrible with just eating, I have a very slow metabolism cause most days, I eat once a day cause I don’t have the energy for breakfast and when I do it’s something unhealthy like sweet processed cereal again cause I don’t have the energy to cook or whatever and I get frustrated with what to eat so I say to hell with it altogether and just go without so most days no breakfast unless you count some unsalted roasted nuts with fresh strawberries I occasionally have as breakfast, then I just skip lunch and healthy snacks altogether throughout the day and I don’t really have an answer as to the reason why and then I’ll have like fish broccali or rice or mixed vegetables or chicken broccali or rice or mixed vegetables cause I can’t be bothered with anything else for dinner and if I do have lunch I won’t have dinner cause I won’t eat no more that day again don’t really know why and that’s my eating habit most days, I feel like with food I simply don’t know what to eat, it overwhelms me which them frustrates so I say to hell with it and go without but as long as I’ve eaten at least once that day I’m satisfied and with hardly no fats, sweets, processed foods, red meat, or pork I manage to lose 15 pounds as I was trying to eat “healthier” cause of an health issue and again that was eating like only once a day as unhealthy as it can be and when I do eat unhealthy the calorie intake is too high so just overall my eating habits are terrible especially in the winter months when I’m not as active, the weight can creep back up on you and your eating habits can get worst, for me at least so I wanna fast, not being as active in the winter months and unhealthy cause lately I’ve been eating fried eggrolls and greasy casseroles with red meat and dark chocolate almond bark as a snack and I hardly ever eat anything fried, really oily and haven’t eaten unhealthy sweets accept cereal in ages, it’s one thing I pride myself on so now I feel like crap and put back on the weight i loss and I don’t like it at all but I wanna get back on track and speed up my metabolism but the metabolism thing is gonna be a hard one cause fasting or not, dieting or not, in taking the right foods and right amount of foods throughout the day is hard for me, outdoor exercising I enjoy, getting the motivation to do it in the winter months is hard, I love walking and biking in the warmer months and that gets me my daily exercise but winter months practically nothing I don’t enjoy standing in one spot in door exercising but I suppose it’s better than nothing in the winter months so maybe I’ll try and motivate myself to give it go with trying to fast and afterwards go back to my healthy eating, I’ll try and work on eating the amounts of food I eat throughout the day as well to boost metabolism but I don’t know how well that’s gonna go and that’s my small novel comment on my life and weight loss

I fast for 16 hours have one big meal at the end and start fasting again for 16 hours, no need to wait out the rest of the 8 hour eating period as i dont eat any more meals. So basically have one meal every 16 hours… is that still considered intermittent fasting?

  • That formula for hitting a “calorie deficit” seems grossly off to me. I was at 170, but didn’t start losing weight until I dropped down to 1,550 calories a day and that was to lose 1lb a week. 2,200 would actually have caused me to gain fat instead. That might be accurate for someone who already has a very high muscle mass to low fat ratio, but that’s insane for an average, not ultra trained person.

  • These kinds of videos are going to exist forever as a testament to how the medical community gets it wrong…and then takes DECADES to correct their position. Let’s go over this shall we?

    Your position is that in order to lose weight, we want to get our metabolism up…and that fasting brings it down and thus counter-productive, right? Let’s run the math.

    The basal metabolic rate is the amount of calories your body burns per day…just to exist. If you’re in a coma…your body will burn that many calories. Now this “slow down effect” or whatever you want to call it….HOW MUCH slower will it lower your metabolism? We know for SURE it won’t be cutting your energy usage by 50%. In fact, I bet your body couldn’t lower your metabolism by more than 10% if it tried unless you threw yourself into a frozen river or something. So we’ll go with that….10%.

    Let’s run the numbers on a male who is overweight and weighs 240lbs, is 5″11 inches, 40 years old, and is moderately active. An online calculator will tell you that that person is going to burn 3,400 calories per day basal rate. Now, let’s chop off 10% of that for “slowing metabolism”. Now were down to just over 3,000.

    Now let’s math it out for a month. Subject needs 3,000 calories per day (at a 10% “lowered” metabolism rate) for 30 days or about 90,000 calories. Consume 90,000 calories and you stay the same. Consume more….you gain weight. Consume less…you lose weight. Let’s move forward….

    Let’s say that this person is doing “Alternate Day Fasting.” So they eat every other day. Not a big deal. And let’s say that because they’re excited about eating on their “feast” days they eat MORE than their 3,000 calories a day. They eat 4,000 calories in fact. 33% more. Let’s run the numbers on this…

    So subject eats 4,000 calories a day but only every other day…or 15 days per month. Take 4,000 calories x 15 days and you get 60,000 calories.

    Body needs 90,000 calories (at the “lowered metabolism rate” no less) in order to just stay the same. So 90,000 needed -60,000 supplied and you get a 30,000 calorie deficit.

    A pound of fat is about 3,500 calories. So 30,000/3,500 and you get 8.6. Eight and a half pounds a month weight loss. Or about 26 pounds every three months….100 pounds in a year’s time. And that’s on the conservative side.

    Yeah…in about 25 years…the “new” medically accepted dogma for weight loss will be: “Eat pretty much whatever you want until you are full during your 3 meals per day…no snacking. And only eat every other day.”
