Chia Seeds vs Flax Seeds Benefits (Flax And Chia Seeds) Which Is Better?

Chia seeds are excellent to make pudding, add to baked goods as a binder, smoothies or juices. Flax seeds: Also known as linseeds, flax seeds are a terrific source of fiber, omega-3 fats and alpha-linolenic acid. However, the healthy fats in these little seeds are present in the fibrous outer shell of the seed, which humans don’t digest easily. We’re huge fans of chia, flax, and hemp seeds, but you need to know how to use them correctly.

All three of these super seeds provide fiber, protein, and a plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids, though they require unique storage and preparation. Here’s how to use chia, flax, and hemp the right way to maximize taste and nutrition (and avoid wasting money). Fiber Content: Including any of the seeds in your diet is a great way to enhance the daily fiber content, but Chia is a better choice as two tablespoons of it gives you 11.2 grams of fiber which is 42 % of your recommended daily intake, in comparison to 7.6 grams and 28% for flax.Chia is one of the richest sources of soluble fiber which adds bulk to stool and slows glucose absorption. Flax Seeds: Rich source of lignans, a phytochemical which reduces cancer risk by acting as an antioxidant.; Least expensive to buy compared to hemp hearts and chia seeds.; Highest source of the plant-based Omega-3 fatty acid (ALA) per serving.Note: ALA fatty acids convert in small amounts to the EPA and DHA form of Omega-3’s that are important for heart health and brain functioning.

Both chia and flax seeds are rich in a variety of nutrients. This table compares the two, listing the amounts of major nutrients per 1-ounce (28-gram) portion, or around 3 tablespoons (4, 5, 6). • In other words, the companies are pouring misinformation to make us assume the wrong decision.
Thanks doc, I won’t lie, I already knew this one, I mean, for god sakes, they even label my chia seed as “theres no studies that confirm to cured diseases”
They put something like that, I always keep an eye on it but with you on the watch we feel safe

  • Hi Vicky nice informative videos which you’ve posted… Have a doubt… Can v take this both at same day? Or can v try this and that in alternative days… Please do reply.. If you can say, yes v can consume both at same day… What would be the amount v have to be intake? Thanks in advance…

  • I use chia seeds and ground flax seeds in my overnight oatmeal, 1 tablespoon of each. It is really good with fresh fruit and almond and or soy milk.

  • I get extra virgin Flax oil whisk it in my hot drinks and pour on soup. Since using my hair is so much thicker and the dogs coat shiner brilliant stuff

  • I blend a tble spoon of flex seeds and add into a glass of warm water, add a juice of lemon,a tsp of honey and drink every morning.helps with cholestrol.

  • Thank you so much Dr Ekberg. This clip is very informative.. ❤️… May i ask, So.. In many recipes i’ve seen baking with flexseeds… They will lose the good benefits? As a vegan we use flex or chia as eggs substitute… Would you say chiaseeds are better for baking?? Thank you again.

  • There’s nothing wrong with eggs nor oil though. Least one is allergic obviously.

Sure, one could argue that overdoing either of the two in unhealthy, but the same thing can be said for anything you can dose on.

Therefore, Chia seeds, or any other kind of plant food is not better than the eggs, nor worse. It’s very different, and the two shouldn’t, and can’t really be compared.

  • Hi..have a question..I mixed my Chia seeds In water and let sit over nite In the refrigerator so they make the jel like look is it best to just put in water and drink or can I do this and put It in a smoothie like I been doing

  • I usually soak the chia seeds till they become gel like. Do the properties change, or am I wasting money by not buying flax seeds?
Also, are some flax seeds better than others to warrant higher prices?
    Thank you for your work!

  • This video was fantastic! I create healthy comfort food on my new YouTube channel. I’d love it if you would look into some of my recipes and share any tips you might have for growing my community…Thanks!:)

  • I fine your voice very calming… Really nice video. I do have a question though. Can I take both chia and basil seeds together in the morning with addition of lemon juice and honey to it?

  • can get ALA from plants. For heart health need DHA and ELA?? not ALA. flax is estrogenic. I eat hemp/flax/chia every day with coconut milk. Weird? not really. No cancer, diabetes, lost 101#.

  • I must have watched 20 videos before deciding to subscribe. I just didn’t want a bunch of stuff showing up in my recommendations that wasn’t as useful as this channel.
    Yes.
    I’ll comment.
    1 cup flax seeds
    2 tbsp chia
a good handful of shredded cheese, or melted block cheese like asodera
    1 1/2 cups water
I was avoiding salt due to my high blood pressure, but if you’re on a severe carb limit or fasting, both of which is now my practice, go ahead and add salt.
Seasonings, mix and match! Here’s some stuff I like:
    1 mustard flour
    2 crushed red pepper
    3 smoked paprika
    4 epesote
    5 parsley flakes
6 wild harvested bee balm (thyme will do if you don’t know how to forage or none grows in your area)
7 wild harvested fragrant sumac (or Persian sumac spice from a specialty market)
Bake time varies with your oven. Spread on a sheet of parchment on a baking sheet, score halfway through with a pizza cutter. Allow to cool and break into the best tasting and healthiest crackers you’ve ever eaten!
I had a friend who worked in a fancy restaurant in NYC and he told me nobody in that place could make any crackers that tasted so good.
These are great to use with whatever low carb Salsa you can make. You can throw the crumbs in salad. Yummy.
Excellent channel! I’m an ametuer naturopathic healer. I know herbs, foraging, wildcrafting, mycology and what I call “potion brewing.”
I’ve learned a lot from your channel. I’d like to know what your thoughts are on herbs and other foods that can help lower blood sugar and insulin resistance.
I have been experimenting with chapparal, which grows abundantly where I live, and have experimented with various citrus peels and pomegranate peels since pomegranite seems to be the most common garden fruit tree in my city. Pomegranite peels, eaten, are a well known Persian folk remedy for many complaints and I am one of those crackpots who absolutely believes that the small amounts of cynogenic glucosides in various fruit seeds fight cancer.
I have also successfully immunized myself to pollen allergies by gathering pollen, tincturing it and holding it under my tongue as a sublingual. Sorry, Billion dollar allergy industry, I don’t need you.
Cheers, Doctor! I am very impressed with your knowledge and communication skills.

  • chia seeds have more tryptophan than do flaxseeds, and so it seems to me that for somebody like me, who suffers from sleep apnea, that chia seeds are better for me than are flaxseeds

  • Thanks so much for your piece.  I use hemp and chia seeds in my smoothies along with walnuts, water, sea salt, carob and a banana. You all might want to look at RawDaddyFoods.com to see how flax, buckwheat and quinoa are used create a cone for vegan food, both sweet and savory!  Thanks again.

  • I’ve not read all the comments so forgive me if this has been asked already. Dr can you advise me on how flaxseed impacts my testosterone?

  • I put a heaping tablespoon full of chia seeds in my pancakes and waffles and are easy an easy way to eat since they get stuck in your teeth.

  • Hi Abra!  Very informative, so thanks for that!  I was wondering too if I can combine all three into one smoothie….Like, make hemp milk as the liquid base to my smoothie and then add flax and chia?

  • Hello is it safe to eat both chia seeds and flax seeds in the same day? And what’s the safe amount for both of these seeds to eat daily

  • What about sprouted chia? Some claim it contains 36 times more available omega 3. Can we find a proper study on this issue? If not, I hope such a study would be conducted. Thanks.
    P.S. Love your videos.

  • I use chia often soaked in coconut milk and served with berries and nuts. I use flax seed daily. I eat keto and I think fiber is elusive and essential in the keto diet.

  • I just put a spoonful and 12 Allen’s glass of water and the flaxseed. And with my oatmeal or hamburger chai seeds lemon honey and soak them in the fridge overnight in a bottle

  • there are probably just as many “validated” studies to show chia is better than flax. just can’t believe anything these days:(
I’m a runner and added chia to my diet. i’ve considered adding flax but won’t drop chia.

  • Thank you so much for the info regarding these different seeds and the various qualities they have. I have often wondered which seeds do what and you have answered all my questions in this video. Thank you again.

  • If you use a vitamix or bendtec blender flax seeds don’t need to be ground. I put both flax and chia in my smoothies in a blendtec and they are completely ground up.

  • I’m 40, from Guatemala. Growing up I loved Chia Kool-aid lemonade…yes I know we raise our eyebrows from all those sugars and artificial crap in Kool aid. My mom used to make a lemonade, add the Chia and just add a hint of Kool-aid for color and we loved it! I can’t believe it’s so popular now.

  • You mention one needs to grind flax seeds. Is it also necessary to grind chia and hemp seeds as well or can they be eaten whole..?

  • Exactly what I was looking for. Needed to know about all 3 of those seeds and this video explained everything without wasting time. I’ll going to hit the subscribe button.

  • I heard seeds need to be smashed or breaker to get all the benefits. So when you only hydrated then with water you may not get all the nutrients? Thanks

  • Chia seeds can affect one’s blood pressure meds I discovered. Sort of like grapefruit and ginger. I stick to flax seeds and walnuts.

  • But I think the Omega 3 fats are the ALA form, almost none of which is converted to the good DHA form you want. And because there are lectins and Omega 6 present, the result is inflammation.

  • However, chia does have way more iron and calcium than flaxseeds, right?
I have a question, should I soak flaxseeds for 8/12 hours before consuming them, like other seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame etc) or can I just ground them and consume them without soaking? Thanks

  • This is real sis, chia seed for weight loss. I’m drinking this everyday! Nakitambay na din ako, sana makadaan ka din po sa kubo ko:)

  • You look like the SLAVIC people or children abducted & sold into “jewish” homes….Predicted in the Bible in Obadiah 10th verse, Zechariah 14:2 and in Isaiah 49th ch. The Romans, Vikings, Turks & Arabs all trafficked us and wanted us for our light coloring and harmonious Caucasian features (EDOM or the modern “jews” with the Khazars who became prozelyted “Jews” around 704 AD) we the real descendants of Jacob, that alit on the Russian Caucasian Mountains first in 745 b.c. and again in early AD when we accepted Christianity…ended up enslaved in Human trafficking over 40 millions in 2.000 yrs.

  • Hello, just came across your video. I have whole flax seeds and chia seeds in my pantry that I bought from a farmers market. Do they expire at all? How long can I have them in my pantry without them loosing their benefits and nutrients? Loving your channel btw

  • I add 1 tablespoon of Chia with 1 tablespoon of grounded flax seeds to a glass of milk and drink it in the morning as my breakfast. so good.

  • Hi Abra,

I use a Vitamix for daily smoothies. Should I still grind the flax separate or will the Vitamix do that for me?
Would I need to soak the chia before putting them in?
Hemp is expensive would I be ok just buying chia and flax, or should I just buy hemp?
    Thanks!

  • If I make laddoos including flax seeds, oats, fennel seeds (grinded form) and jaggery, will the combination be beneficial.. Need ur response..

  • I buy whole flax seeds from SPROUTS, its price at $1.45/lb. I ground one scope (2 oz) flax seeds into powder and mixed it up with coffee. I drink this flax seed coffee every morning and evening with a 16 Oz cup. So far so good.

  • Some good advice there.  BUT, you can not grind flax seeds and keep them for days as they go rancid once the shell is broken.  This however is not the case with Chia Seeds where you easily can mill them and keep it in a tub but I do not advice keeping them in the fridge as they will absorb moisture and become a gel like state so in a cupboard is fine in my experience anyway:-)

  • I saw a video where the nutritionist advised consuming only raw flaxseeds…How do I tell if the seeds are raw or roasted as the packaging does not indicate? Thanks

  • 2:10 Why does your hemp seed bag have Rasta colors (red, green and yellow) on them if they don’t get you high? Rastafarians are notorious for smoking a lot of weed. Bob Marley practiced that religion. lol

  • Hope you can help me clarify things because im getting so confused.I suffer from Sphyncter of Oddi Dysfunction plus a lot of sucrose/lactose intollerances. My recent stay in hospital showed I had a very impacted bowel. My body cant break down fibre so Ive been put on a very low fodmap diet and asked to include linseeds stirred into water to drink daily.Ive got the golden linseeds. The dietican described a gloopy texture as they were been stirred into the water.I havent seen this.Neither was i told to grind them as yourself and others are saying.Help!sounds silly but Im getting very upset over it all,Thankyou,Diane.

  • i love hemp products i use hemp lip bailm indian hemp oil for hair and a body moisturizer mixed with some aloe vera and olive oil its amazing for a ton of things

  • Doc I have flax seeds in a plastic seasoning jar stored in the cabinet. It looks like a seasoning that you would use to shake on foods, should I throw it all away and buy new or is it ok to use them grounded up like this

  • Thanks for sharing. You have really radiant skin; must be the good oil from those seeds. My family have been using chia seeds for a while for its omega-3 and calcium and have just started taking raw hemp seeds also for its omega-3 and protein mainly. My daughter loves it as it is and I love sprinkling the seeds over bread spread, adds a lovely crunch to sandwiches.  We buy organic raw seeds and nuts and other superfoods from iherb.com. iherb offers the best prices and shipping (at times its free, other times only $4 flat international shipping) beats my local health stores’ prices even with shipping! • Would you comment on sprouted grains? I understand you teach that we shouldn’t eat a lot of grain. But my wife and I occasionally eat Ezekial Brand english muffins which are made from sprouted grain. We do this to reduce the carb intake in our diets.

  • hi abra.. thanx for such wondefull info.. i would like to ask u one question though..
do we need to supplement additionally with fish oil pills along with taking one or two of these seeds in our daily diet..?? and why?

    thanx. kudos (Y)

  • Let’s just say all these seeds have been around for hundreds or even thousands of years. Great video and info for plant based eater like myself!

  • We mix chia seeds, hemp seeds, golden and brown flaxseeds and nutritional yeast together and add to our meals. But now I guess well cut out the chia.

  • Hemp protein powder saved my life. If you havn’t tried making a smoothie with hemp seed protein, you are missing out on the eighth wonder of the world.

  • it depends on what you are looking for. Hemp is great protein and zinc source, and doesn’t need to be blended. Flax has the best omega 3 to omega 6 ratio (actualy the best of any food, not just any seed). And chia is like the best of both worlds (not as high in anything, but more balanced). And omega-3 rich seeds should NOT be cooked because heat in cooking makes omega-3 turn into harmful byproducts like free radicals.

  • Thanks for explaining what’s the difference between chia seeds and basil seeds!! I really appreciated your video. Be blessed!!

  • loved tur video. i also give my dog flaxseed and chia seeds daily. i mixed it in with the wet food, water when adding dry food or ill mix it with her raw food with some coconut oil and fermented cod liver oil. healthy….

  • flax seeds must be ground if you intend to get nutrients from them. I was under the impression that chia does not need to be ground, hence use chia if no grinder is available to you.

  • Very factual! This video could be used for when you have to write a nonfiction essay about this topic or for a report about this topic. It is very useful.

  • Mem hmare gaw me alsi ko tisi bolte hai aur bhut asani se mil jata hai hmara khet me ugaya jata hai mem maine aapki sasu maa ki bhut purani subscribe hu unse maine puchha tha ki chia seed ka dusra nam pr aapne clear kr diya thanks

  • Are there any limitations for the amount of ground flax seed I can eat in one day? What would happen if I eat too much?
    Thank you!

  • Are flax safe for men because of phytoestrogens? i read some studies where flax reduce testosterone and some enzyme blocks conversion into DHT.. is that true?

  • Well…at least chia seeds are very high in fiber, protein, and calcium so I will continue to eat them.  They are better absorbed if you soak them in water overnight and then eat them.  You can even give them to your cats and dogs.

  • To my knowledge they should be beneficial while breastfeeding due to the Omega 3 content. Some sources even suggest that flax seed (oil specifically) can help with milk production. I would certainly suggest talking to your doctor about this though, as I am not an authority on pregnancy/lactation nutrition. Thanks for watching!

  • But aren’t Flaxseed high in lignans which increases the estrogen levels? This results in decrease in testosterone levels in males which is not very good, specially for those who are already struggling or for body builders?
I’m not very sure though just want to clarify

  • Omg,i was putting both chia and flack seeds in my protein shakes.
The chia seeds make it smell and taste really bad,but i did it anyway becouse i taught it was super healthy.chia seeds are even more expencive!!!

  • I’m a flax & chia fanatic, though I read several places that those with pcos shouldn’t consume a bunch of flax. I’ve mentioned it to the specialist who keeps track of mah lady issues, and I don’t know if it’s that it’s just really not THAT big of a deal, or if the benefits of flax outweigh any potential risks, at least on my case. I started looking into good sources of 3, 6, & 9’s after, of all silly things, my dogs’ vet mentioned adding a 3, 6, & 9 supplement to one of our arthritic dog’s meals. I asked her how it would help, she explained the anti-inflammatory help it could offer, and I joked that maybe I should take it for my hip dysplasia. She laughed and said that she actually does recommend it to all of her animal patients who have hip dysplasia! I take a combo 2x a day (fish flax & borage), and I supplement my daily food with flax and chia seed where I think I can fit it in. I like white chia the best, as it kinda becomes invisible in my morning steelcut oats & quinoa hot cereal, and I stir in ground flax, too. I also just wrote a really great recipe for honeyed nut & seed bars (they’re seriously amazing), and they contain a healthy dose of chia & flax, too. I haven’t done a LOT of investigation on hemp, but I’ve heard others mention the creaminess it’s able to impart. When you reference hemp in your videos, do you mean hemp hearts? That’s what I always seem to see in stores. I think it’d be a great idea to start carrying some flax & chia in my bag (I love both on salads), and I may have to add hemp to them, too!

  • thanks for the video especially how control data affected the comparison with experimental groups data. It would be interesting to see if the increase in ALA was replicated. Finally, not sure if taking Flax seeds is good going to research it.

  • when we chew Chia or Flax seeds, we any way grind them, right?.. I dont think people just swallow them. Does chewing and then eating the seeds count as eating ground seeds?

  • Mam you won’t believe how badly I wanted to know the differences.. Thanks a ton.. Most valuable video. Mam can you please please tell me which one has more bebifits to weight loss.. Please

  • I actually store them in the freezer in an airtight container because these oils are so fragile.  Also flax seeds gelatinize really nicely too!  They are a great substitute for egg whites in recipes once ground and mixed with water:)

  • Can Basil Seeds be switch with Chia seeds in Chia Seed pudding.? The main recipe I have found an use is..
One can Coconut Milk (if I havent made a batch of homemade Ill use canned.)
    1/3. Cup water
    2.tbsp vanilla

-Would anyone know a better recipe, I really love the pudding an consuming chia seeds this way..Would the basil seeds be any different. If anyone can shed some light on this for me it would be very appreciated

  • I put on my salads hemp seed, chia seeds, flax seeds through coffee grinder and dried out and ground avocado seed with some MCT and flax oil. Really nice.

  • Hi dear abra can u tell me that if one has blood pressure problem can these seeds been taken or these seeds will shoot up the bp level

  • Sukriya for This ma’am…. Ek request hai di aapse actually ham village me h jaha paneer ya u kahe bahut hi kam chije milti h aise me hm kaise weight loss kre please please is pr bata dijiyegaa plz

  • Too hard to say, depends on season, location and what you choose. Incorporating fresh juice into your meal plans is a great thing, but I don’t recommend juice fasts.

  • Dr. Greger, the Swedish FDA don’t recommend eating ground flax seeds because of the cyanide containment. It says on their website “When flaxseeds are crushed or ground, the content of flaxseeds becomes more accessible to the body. This increases the risk of harmful amounts of hydrogen cyanide.” I can’t recall you’ve mention this in any of your videos. Do you have any research about this?

  • I use a coffeegrinder for the flax seeds, done in a few seconds, use them straith away in my smoothy.I use Sunflower seeds non grinded,in my yogurt with oats.Might get the chia seeds also for variation.

  • I was told flax seeds go rancid and lose quality quickly after being ground. I was recommended to grind my own each day. Sometimes I would also seal it in a press seal bag and freeze. That is supposed to be ok for a week or two. I only use chia now though.

  • just a fun fact but marijuana is actually not as bad as everybody thinks it is way less addictive than any of the main pain killers like Vicodin and so on and when not abused it has no negative affects on the lungs and no negative effects on your brain( WHEN NOT ABUSED)!!! it has not been proven to cause any cancers and it helps with chronic pain and many cancers. My uncle used to put a tea bag of marijuana in his tea every morning and it helped him with his back pain it lasted longer than Vicodin and was way less addictive and it didnt make him drowsy like most major pain killers. When abusing it (1 or twice a day) it will have long term affects of loss of brain cells.

  • I am inclined to agree 1000% with this. Bought several jars of Chia seeds from Northstar Nutritionals after falling for their bs advertising. Benvia Gold ground aka Chia seeds does absolutely nothing to improve blood pressure readings. Be careful who you listen to people their is an awful lot of rubbish out their.

Flax also has lignans which help for cancer; 15 times more than chia.

  • I think you could get even more benefits out of the seeds if you soaked them in food grade 1% H2O2 to sprout them, and releasing the enzymes.

  • Stay away from Flax! Flax seeds are loaded with too much phytoestrogens. What they say is healthy one day, is deadly the next. That held true for soy, which is not only loaded with phytoestrogen’s, but most soy is GMO now. Women who overdo it eating soy and flax are prone to getting estrogen receptor positive breast cancers. Also, have you noticed more and more males today have effeminate high pitch voices? that is due to soy flour and soy lecithin being put in almost every processed food, and those guys who think they are eating healthy, have turned into soy boys by eating too much soy and flax products.
