Chia seeds are excellent to make pudding, add to baked goods as a binder, smoothies or juices. Flax seeds: Also known as linseeds, flax seeds are a terrific source of fiber, omega-3 fats and alpha-linolenic acid. However, the healthy fats in these little seeds are present in the fibrous outer shell of the seed, which humans don’t digest easily. We’re huge fans of chia, flax, and hemp seeds, but you need to know how to use them correctly.

All three of these super seeds provide fiber, protein, and a plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids, though they require unique storage and preparation. Here’s how to use chia, flax, and hemp the right way to maximize taste and nutrition (and avoid wasting money). Fiber Content: Including any of the seeds in your diet is a great way to enhance the daily fiber content, but Chia is a better choice as two tablespoons of it gives you 11.2 grams of fiber which is 42 % of your recommended daily intake, in comparison to 7.6 grams and 28% for flax.Chia is one of the richest sources of soluble fiber which adds bulk to stool and slows glucose absorption. Flax Seeds: Rich source of lignans, a phytochemical which reduces cancer risk by acting as an antioxidant.; Least expensive to buy compared to hemp hearts and chia seeds.; Highest source of the plant-based Omega-3 fatty acid (ALA) per serving.Note: ALA fatty acids convert in small amounts to the EPA and DHA form of Omega-3’s that are important for heart health and brain functioning.

  • There’s nothing wrong with eggs nor oil though. Least one is allergic obviously.

    Sure, one could argue that overdoing either of the two in unhealthy, but the same thing can be said for anything you can dose on.

    Therefore, Chia seeds, or any other kind of plant food is not better than the eggs, nor worse. It’s very different, and the two shouldn’t, and can’t really be compared.

    I’ll comment.
    1 cup flax seeds
    2 tbsp chia
    a good handful of shredded cheese, or melted block cheese like asodera
    1 1/2 cups water
    I was avoiding salt due to my high blood pressure, but if you’re on a severe carb limit or fasting, both of which is now my practice, go ahead and add salt.
    Seasonings, mix and match! Here’s some stuff I like:
    1 mustard flour
    2 crushed red pepper
    3 smoked paprika
    4 epesote
    5 parsley flakes
    6 wild harvested bee balm (thyme will do if you don’t know how to forage or none grows in your area)
    7 wild harvested fragrant sumac (or Persian sumac spice from a specialty market)
    Bake time varies with your oven. Spread on a sheet of parchment on a baking sheet, score halfway through with a pizza cutter. Allow to cool and break into the best tasting and healthiest crackers you’ve ever eaten!
    I had a friend who worked in a fancy restaurant in NYC and he told me nobody in that place could make any crackers that tasted so good.
    These are great to use with whatever low carb Salsa you can make. You can throw the crumbs in salad. Yummy.

    I have been experimenting with chapparal, which grows abundantly where I live, and have experimented with various citrus peels and pomegranate peels since pomegranite seems to be the most common garden fruit tree in my city. Pomegranite peels, eaten, are a well known Persian folk remedy for many complaints and I am one of those crackpots who absolutely believes that the small amounts of cynogenic glucosides in various fruit seeds fight cancer.

  • chia seeds have more tryptophan than do flaxseeds, and so it seems to me that for somebody like me, who suffers from sleep apnea, that chia seeds are better for me than are flaxseeds

  • If you use a vitamix or bendtec blender flax seeds don’t need to be ground. I put both flax and chia in my smoothies in a blendtec and they are completely ground up.

  • I’m 40, from Guatemala. Growing up I loved Chia Kool-aid lemonade…yes I know we raise our eyebrows from all those sugars and artificial crap in Kool aid. My mom used to make a lemonade, add the Chia and just add a hint of Kool-aid for color and we loved it! I can’t believe it’s so popular now.

  • Chia seeds can affect one’s blood pressure meds I discovered. Sort of like grapefruit and ginger. I stick to flax seeds and walnuts.

  • But I think the Omega 3 fats are the ALA form, almost none of which is converted to the good DHA form you want. And because there are lectins and Omega 6 present, the result is inflammation.

    I use a Vitamix for daily smoothies. Should I still grind the flax separate or will the Vitamix do that for me?

  • I buy whole flax seeds from SPROUTS, its price at $1.45/lb. I ground one scope (2 oz) flax seeds into powder and mixed it up with coffee. I drink this flax seed coffee every morning and evening with a 16 Oz cup. So far so good.

  • Some good advice there.  BUT, you can not grind flax seeds and keep them for days as they go rancid once the shell is broken.  This however is not the case with Chia Seeds where you easily can mill them and keep it in a tub but I do not advice keeping them in the fridge as they will absorb moisture and become a gel like state so in a cupboard is fine in my experience anyway:-)

  • Hope you can help me clarify things because im getting so confused.I suffer from Sphyncter of Oddi Dysfunction plus a lot of sucrose/lactose intollerances.My recent stay in hospital showed I had a very impacted bowel.My body cant break down fibre so Ive been put on a very low fodmap diet and asked to include linseeds stirred into water to drink daily.Ive got the golden linseeds.The dietican described a gloopy texture as they were been stirred into the water.I havent seen this.Neither was i told to grind them as yourself and others are saying.Help!sounds silly but Im getting very upset over it all,Thankyou,Diane.

  • Would you comment on sprouted grains? I understand you teach that we shouldn’t eat a lot of grain. But my wife and I occasionally eat Ezekial Brand english muffins which are made from sprouted grain. We do this to reduce the carb intake in our diets.

  • Let’s just say all these seeds have been around for hundreds or even thousands of years. Great video and info for plant based eater like myself!

  • We mix chia seeds, hemp seeds, golden and brown flaxseeds and nutritional yeast together and add to our meals. But now I guess well cut out the chia.

  • Hemp protein powder saved my life. If you havn’t tried making a smoothie with hemp seed protein, you are missing out on the eighth wonder of the world.

  • it depends on what you are looking for. Hemp is great protein and zinc source, and doesn’t need to be blended. Flax has the best omega 3 to omega 6 ratio (actualy the best of any food, not just any seed). And chia is like the best of both worlds (not as high in anything, but more balanced). And omega-3 rich seeds should NOT be cooked because heat in cooking makes omega-3 turn into harmful byproducts like free radicals.

  • flax seeds must be ground if you intend to get nutrients from them. I was under the impression that chia does not need to be ground, hence use chia if no grinder is available to you.

  • Are flax safe for men because of phytoestrogens? i read some studies where flax reduce testosterone and some enzyme blocks conversion into DHT.. is that true?

  • Well…at least chia seeds are very high in fiber, protein, and calcium so I will continue to eat them.  They are better absorbed if you soak them in water overnight and then eat them.  You can even give them to your cats and dogs.

  • To my knowledge they should be beneficial while breastfeeding due to the Omega 3 content. Some sources even suggest that flax seed (oil specifically) can help with milk production. I would certainly suggest talking to your doctor about this though, as I am not an authority on pregnancy/lactation nutrition. Thanks for watching!

  • But aren’t Flaxseed high in lignans which increases the estrogen levels? This results in decrease in testosterone levels in males which is not very good, specially for those who are already struggling or for body builders?

  • I’m a flax & chia fanatic, though I read several places that those with pcos shouldn’t consume a bunch of flax. I’ve mentioned it to the specialist who keeps track of mah lady issues, and I don’t know if it’s that it’s just really not THAT big of a deal, or if the benefits of flax outweigh any potential risks, at least on my case. I started looking into good sources of 3, 6, & 9’s after, of all silly things, my dogs’ vet mentioned adding a 3, 6, & 9 supplement to one of our arthritic dog’s meals. I asked her how it would help, she explained the anti-inflammatory help it could offer, and I joked that maybe I should take it for my hip dysplasia. I take a combo 2x a day (fish flax & borage), and I supplement my daily food with flax and chia seed where I think I can fit it in. I like white chia the best, as it kinda becomes invisible in my morning steelcut oats & quinoa hot cereal, and I stir in ground flax, too. I also just wrote a really great recipe for honeyed nut & seed bars (they’re seriously amazing), and they contain a healthy dose of chia & flax, too. I haven’t done a LOT of investigation on hemp, but I’ve heard others mention the creaminess it’s able to impart. When you reference hemp in your videos, do you mean hemp hearts? That’s what I always seem to see in stores. I think it’d be a great idea to start carrying some flax & chia in my bag (I love both on salads), and I may have to add hemp to them, too!

  • I actually store them in the freezer in an airtight container because these oils are so fragile.  Also flax seeds gelatinize really nicely too!  They are a great substitute for egg whites in recipes once ground and mixed with water:)

  • Can Basil Seeds be switch with Chia seeds in Chia Seed pudding.? The main recipe I have found an use is..
    One can Coconut Milk (if I havent made a batch of homemade Ill use canned.)
    1/3. Cup water
    2.tbsp vanilla
    2.tbsp Honey
    3.tbsp Chia seeds.
    -Would anyone know a better recipe, I really love the pudding an consuming chia seeds this way..Would the basil seeds be any different. If anyone can shed some light on this for me it would be very appreciated ��

  • I put on my salads hemp seed, chia seeds, flax seeds through coffee grinder and dried out and ground avocado seed with some MCT and flax oil. Really nice.

  • Too hard to say, depends on season, location and what you choose. Incorporating fresh juice into your meal plans is a great thing, but I don’t recommend juice fasts.

  • Dr. Greger, the Swedish FDA don’t recommend eating ground flax seeds because of the cyanide containment. It says on their website “When flaxseeds are crushed or ground, the content of flaxseeds becomes more accessible to the body. This increases the risk of harmful amounts of hydrogen cyanide.” I can’t recall you’ve mention this in any of your videos. Do you have any research about this?

    One cup of spinach
    Two spoons �� of flak seed
    One �� of chia
    1/2 of avocado ��
    1 banana��
    Five walnuts
    Five almonds

  • I use a coffeegrinder for the flax seeds,done in a few seconds,use them straith away in my smoothy.I use Sunflower seeds non grinded,in my yogurt with oats.Might get the chia seeds also for variation.

  • I was told flax seeds go rancid and lose quality quickly after being ground. I was recommended to grind my own each day. Sometimes I would also seal it in a press seal bag and freeze. That is supposed to be ok for a week or two. I only use chia now though.

  • just a fun fact but marijuana is actually not as bad as everybody thinks it is way less addictive than any of the main pain killers like Vicodin and so on and when not abused it has no negative affects on the lungs and no negative effects on your brain( WHEN NOT ABUSED)!!! it has not been proven to cause any cancers and it helps with chronic pain and many cancers. My uncle used to put a tea bag of marijuana in his tea every morning and it helped him with his back pain it lasted longer than Vicodin and was way less addictive and it didnt make him drowsy like most major pain killers. When abusing it (1 or twice a day) it will have long term affects of loss of brain cells.

  • I take a tbsp of organic seeds in my morning coffee every morning. I soak them in a bit of water for 15 minutes and pour in coffee and blend it. Delicious. Give coffee a bit of chia flavor for my keto lifestyle.

  • If you want the omega 3, you need to grind BOTH flax and chia.
    Flax also has lignans which help for cancer; 15 times more than chia.
    You should check the studies… ����
