The TRUTH About Saturated Fat & Cholesterol (AND What’s the Deal with Coconut Oil??)

Video taken from the channel: Abbey Sharp

If you follow health trends, the debate about coconut oil might be giving you whiplash — and you’re not alone. For years, the oil was villainized, similar to butter, for its high saturated fat content. “First, there is not a single study showing that coconut oil causes heart disease.

Not one. Second, the whole case against coconut oil is founded on a hypothesis that has been proven wrong”. Mark Hyman, M.D. I greatly appreciate this difference of opinion, and of course, I have my own. What do you think? In 2017, the American Heart Association (AHA) released a report aiming to shed light on the long-running debate over the healthiest fats.

The advisory paper recommended against ingesting coconut. From there all proverbial hell broke loose, with half of the world’s experts jumping to the defense of coconut oil, while the others applauded the findings, agreeing that coconut oil is the devil. The whole saga has even been dubbed ‘ Coconut Gate ‘. There also has been a long-standing debate on how the use of coconut oil—a lipid-rich oil—for cooking in Kerala could be the cause of the high heart disease burden in the state.

Back in 2016, The New York Times asked people whether coconut oil is healthy and 72% said yes, but medical experts say there’s largely no good scientific data that backs up health claims. JAKARTA — A new study on certified oil palm plantations and their links to past deforestation has sparked a debate over whether they can be considered sustainable if. Any fat, whether coconut oil, pure MCT oil, or bacon creates inflammation in our bodies and slows the blood flow in our arteries.

MCT Oil: Good or Bad? This is one of those cases where you have to be the judge and weigh the pros and cons against your. While many of the purported benefits of coconut oil have not been rigorously studied, some people report improvements in weight, diabetes, chronic fatigue, Crohns disease, irritable bowel syndrome, thyroid conditions and skin health.

As research evolves, these claims may be substantiated or proven incorrect. Because there’s a risk – coconut oil is extremely fatty. The World Health Organisation and the NHS, amongst others, advise against consuming high amounts of coconut oil, due to its high levels of saturated fat which could, in turn, lead to high cholesterol levels.

Dr. Lim-Sylianco reported that coconut oil was “strongly protective” against all six chemicals.33-34 Aflatoxin is a very potent carcinogen that comes from a fungus that often infests grains, especially corn.

  • I would rather go on google scholar than listen to Abbey, at least I will have someone intelligent pass me the information. I only came here to let her know she wasted all this time on a career in nutrition

  • Hey Abbey, can you do a video on calories, for different ages and what is too low or too high. I have seen SO many different answers, but they are more for the adult and not kids, so I don’t know how much calories are too little for younger people.

  • The environmental impact…raping and killing animals. I’m a hunter. It always comes down to ideology with vegans. I bet anything I care for and love animals more than this guy and all his vegan friends.

  • I found I had high cholesterol almost 2 years ago. I did not want to take the pills they were pushing and had bad reactions, that may or may not have been psychosomatic. I asked the cardiologist to try a diet change. She was reluctant but agreed. I have been I dieter most of my adult life (to my detriment, I know now) so I knew I could handle rules. Seven months later my numbers were within or at normal limits. The doctor said she’d never seen such a drastic change from diet alone. I’m maintaining my healthy eating, most of which you listed and have maintained those numbers. Food is medicine. I have not been able to lose weight since menopause despite the help of doctors and dieticians. I believe you are correct in saying we all have a number our body feels best. I’ve been much thinner but also been much heavier. As long as my bloodwork is normal I assume so am I.

  • it’s unfortunate that the so many people disliking this are just looking for confirmation bias rather than evidence based research.

  • Don’t tell me, its all good just as long as the young, rich white women that make up fat acceptance still get to play the ultimate victim, fixate on their weight and talk about it constantly and body shame everyone who isn’t 400lbs

  • I try to listen to this guy but he’s so flighty. We did he even bring his expert gust on the show to stand next to him while he made his stupid dog and pony show?

  • And Just FYI Dr Ozzy, The Reason Why MCT Oils are not Much Effective in Most Peoples Because they are not in Ketosis/ Theres Your Answer/ If your in Ketosis MCT oil will work EFFECTIVELY

  • What’s so ironic is look at these two cardiologists and which one looks leaner and healthier? It’s kind of funny actually. The cardiologist on the right is overweight and looks terrible and Malhotra looks amazing.

  • If you eat organic extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil it is very healthy all vitamins will not be lost. This video can be perhaps true with non organic warm pressing…

  • Thank you for your video! You mentioned “unpacking Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids would need a whole other video”…..PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you film a video about these??

  • Weird I live off carbs including rice, potatoes, and corn and beans and my A1C is 4.7 when I at 52 years old. I should add that half my family are diabetics. I’ve got Type-1 and type-2 diabetes in my family. My A1C was 5.0, it dropped down to 4.7 when I quit eating oil. So it isn’t the carbs, it’s the fat. BTW, I’m Whole Foods plant-based vegan.

  • Okay i really think that this video with all the studies is kinda bullshit, some of the studies were not even scientifically monitored, i also had a lot of health issues especially with menstruation and as soon i stopped eating oil everything was perfect with my health

  • When will someone deal with the molecular change that happens to fats when heat is applied. Any fat becomes less appropriate for our body when heated and different oils have different heat tolerances. See the book FATS THAT HEAL FATS THAT KILL. by Udo Erasmus who happens to be a scientist. He explains how the shape of the fats change when exposed to heat and how they become less good for our bodies. Some oils according to him should never be heated above our lowest stovetop setting. Coconut oil is among these particularly heat sensitive oils.

  • Hi, have you considered this diet plan known as the Custokebon Secrets? My cooworker says it helps people lost crazy amounts of weight. Is that possible? I also read many good review relating to this diet plan. Thoughts?

  • Do natural popular lose weight diet plan like Custokebon Secrets really work and if so, how effective are they? I’ve heard several amazing things about this popular weight loss secrets.

  • Thank you to both doctors, it was very interesting to hear what they had to say. I have heard Dr. Malhotra many times and was so impressed with what he had to say. I haven’t heard Dr. Kahn before. I am trying the Mediterranean diet, but don’t want to eat meat though I will eat oily fish. So pleased that it does not seem to be a problem for me to get health benefits from a Mediterranean based diet without eating meat. Good to hear Dr Kahn speaking out as a vegan, one of my sons is vegan so I feel better about that now. Many thanks.

  • Hey Abby! I was just curious, why is deep frying an unhealthy practice if canola oil is a great, cheap source of omega-3s. Thank you!

  • Yappy about what the government supports is the red flag right there. Big pharma and the FDA are one and the same. The same people work for the two industries….both care about money only.

  • This was very informative. I’ve been getting biased views from different opposing groups from plant based movements vs high fat diet movements. Yours is full of a balanced and informative information.

  • I notice when many people are having positive results from supplements that are easy and cheap to obtain, suddenly a famous company wants to scare us away from use. Yes they said the opposite before! That coconut oil has benefits. Most companies want us to purchase processed goods and chemical pharmaceuticals.

  • Exactly. “We have to live it if we understand it”. If people really do understand the impact of eating animal products, they will reduce or eliminate it. It’s so easy to say, Oh, I get it, but if you do nothing, you really don’t get it. The rampant overuse of antibiotics given to animals is causing global antibiotic resistance, the immense amount of clean water that is wasted on livestock, the environmental pollution and degradation from animal agriculture is catastrophic; most of the grain crops that could feed us all with abundance are being fed to cattle. The immense suffering of pigs, cows (especially dairy cows), sheep, calves (just babies), chickens (they kill male chicks in grinders while still alive). It’s mind-boggling and painful to think about it. So do people really get it? I don’t think so.

  • Coconut oils not good for doctors bank heath, that is why it is bad for you.

  • I drink coconut oil and heart burn when away and I got better and. lost weaght and my skin hairs got better and my diabetes is more in control

  • Quick google seems to find yhis claim false. “Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are partially man-made fats. The name refers to the way the carbon atoms are arranged in their chemical structure. MCTs are generally made by processing coconut and palm kernel oils in the laboratory. Usual dietary fats, by comparison, are long-chain triglycerides. People use MCTs as medicine.”

  • Hi abbey! I’d love to see a video reviewing the “75 hard challenge” since it’s such a popular trend on TikTok especially with young girls

  • Thank you so much! I know that took a lot of work to cite all of these things, but it is so nice to see the citations as you talk us through the controversy. And then you wrap it up in a nice summary at the end so we know what to do with it. My cholesterol came back a little high earlier this year (straight out of quarantining go figure), and I have been trying to find info on how to manage it with diet and exercise. I came to a lot of these same conclusions, but this is the first time I have found such a clear, comprehensive, and evidence-backed source. You’re awesome!

  • Thank you so much for this video! You cleared a lot of questions I had and you gave me helpful tips for having a better diet!!

  • The problem with studies advertising the reduction of saturated (animal) fat, is that it is almost always grain-fed and non-pastured (sickly) meat studies accompanied by the reduction of refined carbohydrates. In other words, reducing saturated fats from animals in a typical American diet means eliminating both the bun and the sickly-beef of a hamburger. So was it the reduction of saturated fat or the reduction in the refined carbohydrate (burger bun) and omega-imbalanced meat that produced the 29% reduction in CHD? Me personally, I don’t touch refined carbs and I eat far too much high quality, grass-fed or pasture-raised meat. Even so, my hsCRP score is “0.3”. Thus the inflammatory capacity of high-quality meat (TMAO / AGEs) is too small to warrant concern. Since it is now understood that chronic inflammation/immune response is what causes cholesterol plaque, I’m self-evidently not going to have CHD (for good measure, I’m 49 and my blood pressure is 110/70). Finally, vegans and paleo’s agree on practically nothing…except for the avoidance of processed foods and vegetable oils. Both groups seem to derive their CHD benefit from that one commonality. And yet that combined message has now been met in a timely fashion from the AHA promoting vegetable oils for CHD. Something smells very fishy here.

  • Hi Abbey! I absolutely LOVE your videos as they have completely opened up my world of eating and are helping me overcome my ED. Could you maybe do a video on intuitive eating with food allergies? I have an allergy to bakers/brewers yeast and I could barely find any information about it online. From what I gather, yeast is basically in everything which makes me hesitant to eat things like dried fruit or even grapes because of their minute presence of yeast. Thank you so much for all of your exquisite content and rigorous literature reviews!!! You’re seriously the best and so funny!!!

  • Thousands year ago India got it right!!! Coconut and banana, it’s called in Tamil “Panjamirtham” served in temple after prayers!!!

  • that’s awesome. said some things that rang true for me. years ago, I was exercising plenty, but I love to eat! I was not good at portion control. personally, I had to start intermittent fasting. I’ve lost ten lbs in the first few weeks, but have hit a plateau. What I am doing now is going more paleo, modified paleo. I also need to have more discipline in staying the course on exercising, which I love to do, but work often gets in the way. I came across a fitness /diet routine that is one of the most popular in the country, at the moment https://tinyurl.com/y6qwvn5u

, looks pretty good. Really it’s not rocket science, although we in the west make it hard. Eat whole foods in moderation, get enough rest, reduce stress, and exercise, not insanely, but regularly. Aerobics and some form of weight-bearing exercise seem to be the best combination.

  • Thanks for the Video! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you thought about Parlandealey Slim Figure Process (do a search on google)? It is a great one off product for learning how to improve your body with a customized keto plan without the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my best friend Jordan at very last got astronomical results with it.

  • Off topic but does dipping a spoon you licked into your Greek yogurt create mold? Should u always wash em before? Ik this may b common sense but I just wanna know

  • They didn’t differ that much in general, Olive oil in small amounts was ok, so not much room for disagreements. The penile artery thing, a little over done…

  • Human, especially westerners are poisonous you created problems and more. Responsible for them, not defending, presenting I have no time for rubbish

  • I would not want to take diet advise from a doctor who is sporting a bit of a spare tire over the skinny doctor who is telling me to eat fat. I think Dr. Kahn is blinded by the establishment and his personal bias of eating flesh regardless of how well intentioned.

  • Hi. I am a nutrition student. And yes indeed coconut oil contains saturated fat, but the type of saturated fat it contains are medium chain fatty acids, which are different than the ones found in animal products, which are long chain. This means they have two different metabolic pathways, and it has been found that while long chain fatty acids are stored in the body in the form of adipocytes, medium and short chain are used as inmediate energy such as glucose in the body, thats why in the sports world, athletes are given this kind of fatty acids for inmediate energy. So coconut oil is not bad, but that doesnt mean you should eat it by tablespoons. Like everything else, moderation is the key. Coconut oil is not hell but neither the opposite. Hope this helps ❤

  • What are some ways to lost a lot of fat? I read plenty of good opinions on the internet about how Custokebon Secrets will help you lost a ton of fat. Has anyone tested out this popular fat burn diet plan?

  • Sounds like we need to stop eating any processed foods and eat naturally occurring foods instead. And one can reverse the damage caused from processed, additive foods. Why even have these talks?

  • The way to know if something should be eated or exposed to, is to wait till the health czars have demonised it; Sunshine, red meat, eggs, sea salt and saturated fat.

  • So, Abbey can make a good unbiased video when the theme doesn’t touch any sort of tracking, restriction, weighing and weight loss. However, I don’t agree that whole fat dairy can boost satiety, cause for the same amount of calories low fat yougurt and cottage cheese give me much more satiety than whole fat versions. Also since they contain less saturated fat, I can add more unsaturated fats in there (grounded flax seeds, for example). And in studies fats also have shown the worst satiety profile (in comparison with protein and carbs), while containing the biggest amount of calories.

  • We need more studies…………..America needs to totally toss the current government recommended food pyramid and start from scratch. No more survey studies, we need actual diet control studies. Great vlog conversation, thank you.

  • can you review erik the electric? he does these crazy food challenges and I just want to see what someone like you thinks abt them

  • This is a great video. Also watch Charlotte Gerson on YouTube. With juicing a large variety of fruits and veggies, with carrots at the top of the list, cancer can be CURED more than 90% of the time. Chemotherapy is a money making SCAM. Chemotherapy is pure poison that actually causes cancer. The FDA and CDC and the AMA can not be trusted farther than you can spit.

  • Hi Abbey. Dr Mike just put up a weight loss video. At the end of the video he is promoting a diet app to his follower and said he’s using it lose the quarantine weight. He is such a hypocrite!!!

  • I think the dr in the middle has much practical wisdom. I don’t think all thing governments are bad. He himself is mostly plant based and he practiced what he preach. I have respect for both drs. Eating is not an exact science to me. It is about the amounts

  • Thank you for sharing this, such a relevant, important subject and if anyone knows firsthand, it’s Dr. Newport!

Many people aren’t aware of the fact that there is quite a difference between a cold-pressed / centrifuged virgin oil that provides a lot of important health benefits and a poor quality refined oil processed with chemicals and artificial flavoring. (That’s not to say that all refined coconut oil is bad a good quality organic oil from a trusted brand that’s been expeller-pressed is perfectly fine to use.)

For anyone interested: this is an article I wrote last year after the American Heart Association declared that coconut oil is unhealthy with links to scientific research: https://www.thisiscoco.com/coconut-oil-is-healthy/

And in this article I explain about all the different types and processing methods of coconut oil, how to choose the best kind and which to avoid: https://www.thisiscoco.com/how-do-you-know-which-coconut-oil-is-good-for-you/

  • Hey thanks for another awesome video you’ve inspired me to make my own YouTube channel! Love your show your the best!! Love from Canada

  • Dr. Oz is on the payroll of course he will not endorse it, the second he gets payed his next show he will say how good coconut oil is good for you. He is a sell out rat basterd lol

  • I’m sorry but there is maybe a 400 kcal difference in calories when I make a curry with low fat coconutmilk as opposed to the regular one. How exactly does intuitive eating account for those extra calories. Will I just eat less, because I don’t think so. Is my body magic, does it just account for the extra calories and adjust?

  • Vegan guy is right on environmental impact. Plant based diet better for the planet. Omnivore diet better for patient. No principle that there can’t be a conflict.

  • Total Cholesterol is being found out to not be a real issue anymore. This is why Keto style, low carb, high fat ways of eating are doing so much good for people. Eating a ton of saturated fats while still eating 300 g of carbs a day will be an issue because you’ll be storing alot of the fat. The idea of cholesterol being a marker for all these health issues is being debunked by more and more studies as low carb, high fat diets become more popular.

  • Thank you both for the video. It means a lot to us Filipinos. We’ve been eating coconut based foods for a very long time. We know it’s not poison by any stretch.

  • I cant believe the t shirt guy. Even the AHA says saturated fat is ok now. Canola is almost poison. On the other hand if you are gonna eat breads and grains you shoudnt eat any fat with it. Try it. Pretty bland. I have been managing my T2D for 22 years with keto diets, now with intermittant and extended fasting. Age 62 cac score 73 A1C 5.2. Cac was probly zero 5 years ago.
No neuropathy. You gotta be a fat burner to be healthy. If I ate like t shirt guy I would be missing some toes and blind maybe dead by now. T shirt guy looks insulin resistant to me. I would like to see his fasting insulin and triglycerides.

  • Do natural popular weight loss diet plan like Custokebon Secrets really work and if so, how effective are they? I’ve noticed many amazing things about this popular lose weight diet plan.

  • carb intolerance (type 2 diabetes) isn’t caused by carbs, but by fat stuck inside muscle cells that blocks insulin activity and keeps glucose out of the muscle cells and stays in the blood. This is relatively new info, but to truly reverse type 2, just reduce the fat and suddenly insulin starts working again. Lowering carbs and replacing with fats will make carb intolerance worse, not better!

  • Turning like/dislikes again? Dont think so noobie. This old lady does not know what is she talking about, this channel should be taken down just for giving miss information to ppl that is truly looking to overcome a problem

  • I’m Spanish, Mediterranean I guess and I can tell you our traditional diet includes lots of meat and saturated fat and lard is used to cook stews.

  • Please review Linda Sun!! She is a smaller Youtuber, but she has such a healthy outlook on food and I really feel like your platform would bring her incredible message to more teenage girls struggling with disordered eating!!

  • They’re coming around. People that think it’s poison are dwindling by being schooled by us, the people that know better. Keep telling people about coconut oil. Never give up.

  • I don’t agree. No oil is good. All oils are processed. Eat the entire coconut. Eat the olives. It takes 45 olives to make one serving of olive oil. Research that. No person will or can eat 45 olives. It’s simple. No oil!

  • So what does the vegan doc do for B12, vitamin D, carenitine, creatinine, vitimin A, & all the other necessary fat soluble substances his brain needs?….is this where he relys on suppilments..how wonderfully natural…& how does he avoid the occulates & lectins in veggies?…not impressed

  • khan is misinformed and should read more serious clinical papers. all studies comparing low carb high fat vs low fat diets show Khan is wrong

  • There are a lot online health videos that contradict each other. Sometimes, you don’t know what to believe. Some Americans still believe the Earth is flat.

  • Have you heard of the blue zone diet? It’s more of a lifestyle and it seems to follow some of these principles. Loved to hear your thoughts about it. Great video!

  • Really love these kinds of videos, and I’ve been trying to share them with my (aging) mother lately to encourage her to join me in learning to eat healthier. I’d love a video about diet as we age, especially considering she’s still so stuck on anti-fat, anti-calorie, anti-flavor food!!!

  • Coconate oil is good for only sex specially mans baby it helps me alot before i was 6inch now 8 it helps small penis but eating is not good alot of fat he is wright.

  • Tell them they just do not want anyone to used it I used it to cook internally an used on my hair an skin soon gonna give my mom she’s 75an needs some for the brains I can make it

  • Hi Abbey! Could you make a video on utilization of protein from different sources? E.g. to ensure sufficient protein as a vegan I’ve understood protein sources differ in how well the body can utilize them, i.e. there’s things to consider beyond balancing amino acids.

  • Kahn “plant based diets are naturally low in sugar”. Um no… Vegans consume large amounts of fruit which are full of… Sugar. You don’t need modern sugar-filled fruit in your diet. Veggies give you all the good nutrients that fruit does MINUS THE SUGAR!!

  • a famous gut health influencer i know (with a fairly large platform) with lots of personal experience with IBS, IBD, Crohn’s disease, Candida, etc. had a post where she said she didn’t eat peanuts, because they were toxic due to their content of aflatoxins. i’ve noticed that after reading about this, i’ve subconsciously began choosing almond butter, cashew butter, etc. instead of peanut butter. would love if you could talk about this!

  • FYI. Saturated fat does not cause heart disease. In fact it is heart protective. It is too much of the man made fats like vegetable oils, Crisco, cotton seed oil, Soy bean oil, hydrogenated oils, etc. in our diets that cause heart disease. These oils are pretty much in everything and are cheap. I would worry about over consuming those oils rather than worry about coconut oil. Dr. Oz, Heart Foundations, and most people in the mainstream won’t tell the truth because they are protecting the food industry or getting money off them, so they are afraid of losing their sponsors.

  • Good afternoon you are so right because I have been told that coconut oil is good for us and you have to always do things in moderation you have your advantages and you have your disadvantages with anything so thank you for sharing this video and chat and have an awesome rest of the day.

  • I believe there’s a fine middle. Meaning combining Keto with Plant Based (not Veganism). Veganism came about for the animals and thus environment. Be you African, European or Asian, our ancestors were eating meat for THOUSANDS of years BUT…big ‘but’…our ancestors never consumed the amount of meat we do now and our meat and plants weren’tso Genetically Modified. Are ancestors consumed more plant based diets and very little meat then and it changed according to their demographic. One may eat more fatty food in the colder demographic than those in tropics/Caribbean…but all of our ancestors ate so little of animals SO LITTLE that animals flourished. But everything is about money and deception. The same people running the world and running Africa into the ground and deceive you with religion are the same people in the Food and Drug industry. Same people of the Military Industrial Complex. Everything is for profit. And they fear monger you to think its because we’re “over populated” so the mass production of processing these animals that cause climate/environmental issues is where these crazy ass vegans come in. But its wrong. Again, if we stop listening these capitalists and eat in BALANCE the way our ancestors did and consume more fruits and veggies and ate meat IN SEASON on how they’re farmed…then we will be good. So stop with this vegan, keto, paleo bullsh*t people….ESPECIALLY you vegans. As a spiritualist like my elders…a plant has just as much ka (spirit) as the animal or the tree. If you choose NOT to eat an animal thats your choice. But majority of you still don’t pray to your plant food (OR Animal meat for you “omnivores”) as our ancestors did. The imposing nature of many (not all) you on people becoming vegan is sickening. The world is sick. Teach the world what our ancestors did and then we’ll heal the world and more animals will be saved.

  • Vegan diet isn’t low in sugar. People be eating fruit like motherfuckers all day long. That is insane amount of carbohydrates. Just because you are eating natural sugar, doesn’t mean the excess isn’t bad for you. What BS.

  • How do you guys trust mayo clinic…they survive on people getting sick. Ofcourse they want you to be sick and avoid anything that will be healthy.

  • Oil is fat. If you are eating carbs and sugars avoiding fat is the basic idea.if you are using good fats in your diet you need to avoid carbs and sugars which is the big picture

  • Joel likes to talk about dicks because he is one. Way too much bias. The peer reviewed studies he talks about are crap. Associational and weak at that. Bringing bread back? Watch you blood sugars spike! Harvard School of Public Health is a vegan bias. His arguments are weak at best. Then he says vegan is the only way to save the planet take a look at what plant oil and grain farming is doing!!

  • I had a fitness trainer make a meal plan has 15 grams of coconut oil or one tablespoon which is far less then the last that said eats 6 tablespoons, that’s a lot of calories and my diet incorporates fiber, I no longer have the chronic stomach issues

  • If you were gonna talk about the role of saturated fat in cholesterol levels, why didnt you talk about what happen when you go to the opposite extreme by not consuming any saturated fat (like many vegans) and adding to much unsatarated fats, fiber and complex carbs: hipocholesterolemia, which is as bad a hipercholesterolemia, specially since many of your subscribers are vegan/vegetarian/plant based and feel so proud of having really low cholesterol levels in their blood, which is super unhealthy (cholesterol levels must not be neither high nor low).
Make a whole video on this topic “hipocholesterolemia” (low cholesterol levels in blood by a lack of saturated fats, specially in vegans) in order to give complete information about saturated fat and its importance.

  • 62 yo here. Was told I was prediabetic. Been on Keto based diet for over 3 months, have lost 30 pounds. BP Is down and I look ten years younger. How is this possible?

  • Not all saturated fats are equal. Short to medium chain saturated fats (4-12 carbons) are healthier than longer chain ones. Butyric acid (4 carbon), caprylic acid (10 carbon), lauric acid (12 carbon) are OK.

But, Myristic acid (14 carbon), Palmitic acid (16 carbon) are detrimental for heart health and have a negative impact on lipid profile.

All in all, the saturated fat in coconut oil is made up of seven different types of fatty acids, including caproic, caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, and stearic acid. Of the seven types of acid, lauric acid is the most predominant. Coconut oil contains about 6 g of lauric acid, a type of medium-chain fatty acid. Eating foods high in medium-chain fats can cause an increase in low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol levels.

Observational evidence suggests that consumption of coconut flesh or squeezed coconut in the context of traditional dietary patterns does not lead to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. However, due to large differences in dietary and lifestyle patterns, these findings cannot be applied to a typical Western diet. Overall, the weight of the evidence from intervention studies to date suggests that replacing coconut oil with cisunsaturated fats would alter blood lipid profiles in a manner consistent with a reduction in risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

  • It’s not easy to always know who is right and who is wrong. I have come to trust my body, it is really good in letting me know when it does not like something. I love everything coconut and my body loves it too.

  • Thanks for this balanced view of coconut oil! Fear mongering is the most ANNOYING thing in media. We need more Registered Dietitians out there in the media to prevent/lower the fear mongering and nutrition-misinformation.

  • Forget information online, I got gallstones, we have to avoid fat when have gallstones right? yes but not coconut oil read this ;
If you have gallstones try this then you don’t need surgery, This is what I know, the saturated fat in coconut oil doesn’t require bile to break down and read the following:
This is real life real story not from any video
I got Gallstones and have 2 friends had gallstones over a long period of time, they took 1 tbsp virgin coconut oil mixed with 8 oz fresh Apple juice every morning before any food, their stones gone after 2 months, I started May 25th 2020 hopefully mine are gone too in a month or two, I’ll demand another ultrasound test next month to find out. if it works I’ll start my own channel to let the whole world know. so far I’m good, light urine, brown stool, constipation gone, bloated stomach gone, no attack since May 25th, every now and then I feel movement in my gallbladder like something move in slow motion but no pain, hope it was contraction from gallbladder pushing the stones out. PS* I also drink 4 oz of celery juice before the main remedy. Saturated fat in coconut oil doesn’t require bile to break down, it’s good saturated fat not the bad one and it’s okay to drink them daily, remember one thing, our body required and good and bad saturated fat to balance.
Even you don’t have stones this is still a good remedy for your guts and I’m sending message every day trying to save the world:)
7/1/2020 update; for the last 2 weeks I poop right the juice, nice and solid Bristol stool number 3 and 4. 30 mins later after break I have to run to toilet to blow another 1 to 2 lbs of loose stool, looks like bunches stone there. Bristol stool chart number 4 and 5, I’m gonna get an ultrasound soon.

  • Sorry but what Joal is pushing is so wrong. He really needs to do his homework. Ivor Cummins is the man. Just because the US government endorses a diet does not make it good. That has been shown since the 1970’s. He even recommends Vegetable oil WTF!!! Who if funding him. Notice there was no declaration of interests. Sounds like he may even have a religious bent. He’s also obviously a vegan evangelist.

  • Could you do a video talking about B12 absorption when consuming nutritional yeast? I know fortified nutritional yeast contains a large amount of the RDA. So would eating a serving of nutritional yeast every day mean that you wouldn’t need a B 12 supplement?

  • Something to note:
The reason why replacing saturated fat intake with carbs doesn’t have much of an effect is likely because sugars like glucose and fructose are pretty lipogenic, meaning they can be converted to fatty acids through a process called de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and the direct product of DNL is palmitate, which is a saturated fatty acid.

What this means is that the presence of saturated fat in the body has usually been found to be pretty bad, especially for diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome (which are risk factors for CVD) but you don’t need to EAT saturated fat for your body to store lots of saturated fat in your body. Your liver is really good at converting macronutrients into different forms.

  • I have a question about nuts: I’m vegetarian and I eat 3-4 tablespoons of nut butters (peanut, almond, hazelnut, cashew etc) every day, because it‘s a amazing source of protein and it is sooo good (+ I want to gain weight). Is it ok?

  • All I wanted to say is that I love videos like this! They’re super informative and useful. I know people really enjoy the WIEIAD videos, and I do as well, but this right here is my favorite kind of content. Thanks!

  • Well if its only maybe okay occasionally in small quantities…that sounds pretty unhealthy for me. Thats pretty much the same rule that goes for alcohol.

  • Perhaps the most Relied upon source of Research Information in the World… they publish only 5% of Research Papers Submitted!
