Focusing on net carbs is an unnecessary approach to healthy eating and weight loss and can cause more confusion than benefit.   • I just saw a VSHRED ad. He ate a whole pizza instead of a salad. He claims salad is rabbit crap and makes you hungry. Salad is good and makes you much more full. Put some olive oil and vinegar in it and some other greens. Add some broccoli and cauliflower and you will get a ton of essential protein and fats. You heard that vegans and everybody. Broccoli is a very high protein vegetable. Cauliflower has a lot of healthy fat in it. Add some chicken too. Don’t fear the saturated fat. Saturated fat causing heart disease is pseudo science. They actually protect your heart. It’s the croutons, the pizza crust, the burger bun, the white bread, the trans fats, the fully hydrogenated oils, the processed dressings, that cause heart disease.
    Let’s talk about pizza vs salad from a metabolic standpoint. When you eat the pizza, your amylase starts to immediately break down the starch into sugars. All of that gets sent to your liver. Your liver gets a huge overload and dumps the sugar and a ton of triglycerides and ldl into your bloodstream. Your pancreas come to the rescue and dumps an antidote called insulin into your blood. The insulin shoves all of that sugar into your fat cells, and muscles. Because of this, your blood sugar drops and you become hungry again for more junk food.

    When you eat the salad, the fiber, fat and protein in the salad slow down the absorption of the already slow acting carbs. The carbs enter your liver in a very slow trickle. Your liver knows how to manage that and slowly sends it to your blood stream. What you get is a feeling of fullness and long lasting energy.
    So pizza or salad? Which would you rather eat?

    I mean just eating lettuce on its own is boring. Add some healthy toppings like what I mentioned at the top and you get a powerhouse full of healthy slow carbs, phytochemicals, vitamins, fiber, fat, and protein.
    The pizza is nothing but empty calories, simple carbs, trans fat, and highly processed meat.

  • I believe the modern western diet is too high in carbs and animal protein. I suffer from the auto-immune disease A.S. and I’ve read a lot about the connection between high carb consumption and inflammation, which involves klebsiella bacteria overgrowth. It may be that the primary cause of auto-immune disease is processed grains and sugar. If that’s true then either a low carb diet or a plant based diet would bring about improvement.

  • With all due respect to Dr Westland, the debate is which diet leads to better health: whole food plant based vs the animal based diet. It sounded like Dr Westland came to debate low-fat animal based diet vs the high fat animal based diet (keto).. Animal based diets lead to all of the western diseases, including heart disease, the number one killer of men and women in the United States. There is only one diet that has been proven over and over to not only prevent but reverse this terrible killer in the vast majority of people studied. Whole food plant based. There is a mountain of evidence proving this. Not 100%, but the over whelming preponderance. No other diet can make this claim.

  • The best way to get fat adapted and used to the ketogenic diet is starting with fasting, particularly 24 hours. Then go into breaking the fast with fat. I got adapted so quick that I don’t crave sugar, carbs and food in general. I eat when my body tells me it’s time and that’s usually after 4pm.

  • I need to pass on some info to my daughter. My daughter wants to have band surgery for her stomach as she is tired of being fat.  She has an immune disease plus thyroid problems.   • Campbell is full of shit. I was Whole Foods plant based for 1.5 years, I Don and never have eaten sugar or refined foods, but my blood glucose went up and out of control.

  • This does not make sense. Eat fat? So you be hungry, to burn fat? is this a joke? Fat has a lot more calories than fillers, like grains. Why Asians are all slim? They mostly consume Rice, I mean white Rice, not even brown rice. Grains gives you Soluble and indissoluble fiber, consumed with water, will bulk up your in Intestines, helps it’s muscles to move the waste. Dude, here, simple guideline from me, eat sensible, natural food like Greens, don’t over eat, and walk it off everyday. Stay away from Fat.   • The high carb low protei guy is full of doo-doo. I could barely tolerate listing to him. I think he is dangerous. I have seen too many videos of ex-vegans telling their horror stories, of how they became vegan, and the massive health issues that forced them to quit being vegan and start eating meat again. If you cannot see that, you have no science brain to string together an argument whatsoever.   • Five years ago I switched from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to a Whole Foods Plant Based diet after watching Forks over Knives which shows how our food is processed. Within six weeks I lost 35 pounds (I was obese), stopped all diabetes medication as I no longer was diabetic after 20 years, stopped blood pressure medication as my blood pressure became normal (120/ 80), stopped taking medication for high cholesterol as it went from 210 to 135. I watched this debate with interest and there is no doubt that I believe the author of the China Study along with his half a century in the medical field won hands down.

  • Blood sugar NOT going up after a meal is not necessarily optimal either. Sugar is there to provide energy. The point is not that it goes up but that it comes down after 1-2 hours.

  • This guy. Blah blah blah. I lost a whopping 60 pounds on ultra low carb restrictive eating for 12 months. SIXTY fucking pounds. Incredible. The truth: My mental health suffered greatly. Felt great to get lighter, I could jump out of a sitting position felt like I was floating with less of that weight to carry, confidence boosts in the mirrorthe freedom to virtually not be hungry (Although to me this is still a little creepy). I hit a plateau (Yes it’s true it happens). Couldn’t get under 200 (Which is fine as i’m 6’4 and toned) but my mental health is terrifying. Without the blood sugar spikes, experiencing hunger, the energy carbs give you, nor bothering to do cardio and get those endorphins; I fell into this feeling of zombification, dis-associative, lack of feeling, lack of emotion, sociopathic, tired, just sort of nothingness. These feelings also coming from being fully medicated for depression by a professional. I know it sounds crazy but food is just pure joy and it does bring you energy and happiness. My only issue is portion control and knowing when to not over do it as I was a previous binge eater. But I will tell you right now low carbs is not a long term answer as it will promote mental deterioration. I think i’m just going back to food I like and being happy.

  • I have to give this one to Dr Campbell he was much more persuasive and so I watched The China Study Documentary and now I have to ask? The gold standard is all cause mortality, what is the use of having 50% less chance of cancer if you die on average 10 years younger? In seems in The China Study Dr Campbell would have been in position to plot against all cause and he doesn’t, I imagine there is a reason why not.

  • Atkins taught me how bad and aging sugar is. It also reminds you why you didn’t like meat when you were little. Do it for a weekmeat will never look that good to you again.   • The reason why plant based advocates are so desperate in their totally misguided and misinformed “efforts” of finding something “bad” in animal foods is probably because they know that sooner or later people will catch up with the fact that plants are not “healthy” and that many of the so called benefits of the plant based diet is simply achievable through any elimination diet and probably even better on a proper carnivore diet. Plants are just not what marketing people have told us the whole time. Plants are problematic to say the least and this will come out sooner or later. So the only viable strategy is to smear and tear down animal foods so they can say: “but animal foods are worse!” No they are not.
    1. Plants are not in the business of being nutritious, plants are in the business of inhibiting nutrition, cause physical damage, poisoning, messing with digestion, messing with hormones, messing with physiological processes, messing with fertility, messing with the thyroid, messing with your insulin, messing with the gut, messing with nervous system, messing with sleep, inhibiting calorie absorption, messing with the brain and messing with well being in general. Plants don’t want to be eaten and they are expert chemist. In contrast animal foods are very satiating, easy to digest and come in the correct profile and ratios.

    2.All plants are hard to digest, nutrient deficient, nutrient inhibiting, gut irritating, have bad bio availability, the wrong nutritional profile composition and ratios, have terrible absorption rates and are poisonous BY DESIGN and here is a non exhaustive list of plant defences that make this abundantly clear:
    Phytic Acid, Lectins, Phytohemagglutin, Phytoalexins, Goitrogens, Oxalates, Tannines, Solanin, Salycalates, Sapine, Phytoestrogens, Isoflavones, Glucosinolates, Sulfides, Benzols, Glutamates, Protease Inhibitors, Gluten (celiac disease),  Cystine Protease Enzymes, Wheat-Germ-Agglutinin, Cyanogenic Glycosides, Photosensitizers, Phytoecdysones, Aflatoxin, Ochratoxin, Clostridium botulinum, Acrylamide, Furan, and also: Pesticide residue, solvent residues, heavy metals, that accumulate directly. Non such defences exist in animal foods.

    3.How could anyone intellectually honest make the claim that plants are meant for us to eat or that they are the preferred or even superior food? This assumption preposterously dumb. Thats not even factoring in the nutrient deficiency of plants: Vitamin A, B6, B12, D, F, K2,  DHA, EPA, Taurin, Carnitin, Carnosin, Creatin, Heme-Iron, CoQ10, CLA, Cholesterol etc all missing in the catabolic plant based diet. The plant based diet is a catabolic fast and not a wholesome anabolic way of feeding yourself. The plant based diet can lead to orthorexia that causes psychosis in some of its cultist followers. We are facultative carnivores and we prefer animal foods for good evolutionary reasons.

    4. As the DIAAS score acknowledges plant proteins are of way worse quality than animal protein and that docent even yet factor in that most plants need to be cooked to remedy all the messy plant chemicals which also destroys most of the nutrients in the plants. Considering all this plants look absolutely terrible from a nutritional standpoint even ignoring the daily micro poisoning through the various chemical plant agents and natural pestizides.

    5. Is plant based better than the SAD diet? Yes probably but that’s the lowest bar possible to hurdle. Is the plant based diet the best diet? Certainly not, in fact its not a diet its a catabolic fast that can cause serious longterm issues

  • I have receintly have had gout. I need to loose weight. I love fish, but the diet for gout suggests not to eat fatty fish like sardines, tuna, shrimp etc. Is the protein low enough that I can now eat some of the drier fish and when I loose weight I will not have the threat of gout again

  • Keep in mind you don’t have to be 100% vegan to get the health benefits. The Okinawa people used to be one of the healthiest longest lived people on earth eating a starch based diet of sweet potatoes and rice, with lots of fruits and veggies. But they were NOT vegan. They were 95% whole food plant based. Something like 90% of their calories came from complex carbohydrates. But they did eat fish and pork occasionally. So you don’t have to be vegan. Just 95%. Save eating animal products for special occasions. Maybe eat a piece of fish on Sunday’s to celebrate the sabbath. Enjoy a steak in your birthday. But the rest of the time? Rice. Potatoes. Corn. Other whole grains. Fruit and vegetables. Honestly that’s what I do. I do like to eat an occasional piece is salmon about once per month. When I have something to celebrate. I’m in my 40s but my health is the same as a person in their early 20s. My diet is based on sweet potatoes and brown rice. I also eat a lot of fruit and some vegetables. But on a very rare occasion I’ll crave a nice piece of wild caught salmon. Not often. Maybe about once per month. Eating this way keeps my weight at ideal. My blood sugar levels and cholesterol are normal. I’m energetic and clear minded. I don’t care what they say. China study is the way for me too.

Colin Campbell’s reliance on epidemiology to form his hypothesis is not scientific fact until the hypothesis is backed up by random clinical trials, so T.Colin Campbell’s assertions that animal proteins cause cancer are just his unproven hypothesis which he is trying to present as scientific fact.

  • It’s beyond confusing at this point, and I don’t know who to believe. This doctors says one thing, but I can quickly find another doctor who will say something else. There’s virtually no consensus as to what is sustainable long-term. The only consensus is that cutting calories (energy) will make the body eventually consume its stored energy (fat); and if enough of a deficit exists, the human will lose weight. This isn’t a consensus formed by medical doctors; it’s a consensus formed by physicists and the laws of thermodynamics. Medical doctors cannot take credit for this scientific understanding.   • This was a year ago and this guy is still spewing wrong info on gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis is demand driven, your body only converts the amount it needs to sustain health.

  • I am hypothyroid and have been doing the Keto diet with not good results and I have pains in my legs and sometimes my arms…I am 80 and considering giving it up because the pain is not worth it to me…,I am overweight and have been trying so hard to lose but it’s not working for me….I take 100 mcg of levothyroxine a day and also multi vitamin, with 2000 Vit D3, use coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, and organic veggies, sardines, mackerel, salmon, chicken, grass fed beef seldom, grass fed butter, noticing that multi vitamins do not include potassium or magnesium so I put mag in my water and eat greens, broccoli etc,, stevia in coffee……don’t know why I can’t lose anything while keeping carbs low, I need help…..my gp does not discuss any of this with me…..don’t think he believes in the Keto diet…..I live alone now and don’t know anyone doing the same diet that I can talk to….also why does no one talk about the need for vitamin C to help you with muscle, connective tissue, nails, etc

  • Sustainable would be the whole food plant based for me. I was interested in ketogenic diet but it was too strict and have to watch carefully your macronutrients and carb intake. I find that many people into keto were in it for weight loss or body builders. Im looking for a lifestyle eating that is great for overall health and fuss free.   • The key for me, having explored both in the pursuit of health is that if you stray from the whole food plants based diet (say a weeks vacation) you might put on a little weight. If you stray from Keto for a week you need to undergo a painful withdrawal period, a sickness, for at least a week. Life is for living. Personally I will fast if I want to lose some fat, and I will get into ketosis doing that in a short time and for a one of two days.

    Even so, main question and concern is going to be how to get my mineral intake optimized in my known clean safe water source.
    Stretching exercises got the swelling down along with no more processed foods that have the high sodium, i.e. 500mg per serving as the worst was the Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup at 1970mg per 2 serving bag that I haven’t used in a few weeks since I noticed before this round was causing… though I didn’t notice the slight discoloration above the ankles like spider veins and like red/purple under the skin and the freckles that I assumed prior were from sand flea bites. Time to start up some calisthenics once this swelling has stabilized and I get rid of the discoloration. The warmth period went away, so that’s good. No edema now.

    The 1980 WHO report

    Salts are leached from the body under the influence of drinking water with a low TDS.

    Because adverse effects such as altered water-salt balance were observed not only in completely

    desalinated water but also in water with TDS between 50 and 75 mg/L, the team that prepared the

    1980 WHO report (3) recommended that the minimum TDS in drinking water should be 100

    mg/L. The team also recommended that the optimum TDS should be about 200-400 mg/L for

    chloride-sulphate waters and 250-500 mg/L for bicarbonate waters (WHO 1980). The

    recommendations were based on extensive experimental studies conducted in rats, dogs and

    human volunteers. Water exposures included Moscow tap water, desalinated water of

    approximately 10 mg/L TDS, and laboratory-prepared water of 50, 100, 250, 300, 500, 750, 1000,

    and 1500 mg/L TDS using the following constituents and proportions: Cl
    (40%), HCO3 (32%),
    SO4 (28%) / Na (50%), Ca (38%), Mg (12%). A number of health outcomes were investigated

    including: dynamics of body weight, basal and nitrogen metabolism, enzyme activity, water-salt

    homeostasis and its regulatory system, mineral content of body tissues and fluids, hematocrit, and

    ADH activity. The optimal TDS was associated with the lowest incidence of adverse effect,

    negative changes to the human, dog, or rat, good organoleptic characteristics and thirst-quenching

    properties, and reduced corrosivity of water.

    In addition to the TDS levels, the report (3)

    Based on the currently available data, various researchers have recommended that the

    following levels of calcium, magnesium, and water hardness should be in drinking water:

    • For magnesium, a minimum of 10 mg/L (33, 56) and an optimum of about 20-30 mg/L (49,

    57);

    • For calcium, a minimum of 20 mg/L (56) and an optimum of about 50 (40-80) mg/L (57,

    58);

    • For total water hardness, the sum of calcium and magnesium should be 2 to 4 mmol/L (37,

    50, 59, 60).

    At these concentrations, minimum or no adverse health effects were observed. The

    maximum protective or beneficial health effects of drinking water appeared to occur at the

    estimated desirable or optimum concentrations. The recommended magnesium levels were based

    on cardiovascular system effects, while changes in calcium metabolism and ossification were used

    as a basis for the recommended calcium levels. The upper limit of the hardness optimal range was

    derived from data that showed a higher risk of gall stones, kidney stones, urinary stones, arthrosis

    and arthropathies in populations supplied with water of hardness higher than 5 mmol/L.

    Long-term intake of drinking water was taken into account in estimating these

    concentrations. For short-term therapeutic indications of some waters, higher concentrations of

    these elements may be considered.

    All four Central European countries that became part

    of the EU in May 2004 have included the following requirements in their respective regulations

    but varying in binding power;

    • Czech Republic (2004): for softened water ≥ 30 mg/L calcium and ≥ 10 mg/L magnesium;

    guideline levels of 40-80 mg/L calcium and 20–30 mg/L magnesium (hardness as Σ Ca + Mg

    = 2.0 – 3.5 mmol/L).

    • Hungary (2001): hardness 50 – 350 mg/L (as CaO); minimum required concentration of 50

    mg/L must be met in bottled drinking water, new water sources, and softened and desalinated

    water.

    • Poland (2000): hardness 60–500 mg/L (as CaCO3).

    • Slovakia (2002): guideline levels > 30 mg/L calcium and 10 – 30 mg/L magnesium.

    The Russian technical standard Astronaut environment in piloted spaceships – general

    medical and technical requirements (64) defines qualitative requirements for recycled water

    intended for drinking in spaceships. Among other requirements, the TDS should range between

    100 and 1000 mg/L with minimum levels of fluoride, calcium and magnesium being specified by

    a special commission separately for each cosmic flight. The focus is on how to supplement

    recycled water with a mineral concentrate to make it “physiologically valuable” (65).

  • SO many FOOD GURUS out there, and most of them don’t have enough information or education about how our body works, as well as Big Food and Big Pharma Trolls spreading misinformation. They are ruining Keto and Paleo diets by telling people it’s OK to eat garbage. KFC is NOT Keto no matter how much you want it to be. These two diets are meant to teach us to eat healthy delicious healing diets, KFC is FAR from it. Just because it’s meat and it’s fried in Fat, it does not make it Keto, Hamburgers from a fast food place are also not keto, even if you just put them in a lettuce wrap, because the meat is from sick animals and full of pesticides and disease.

    You have to pay attention to what is healing and good for you. Franken chickens, or beef, from factory farms, fried in horrible, rancid, highly processed oil from GMO crops, ARE DEADLY.

  • I started Keto but now I have been Carnivore for 6 months 90% of the time. Feeling even better on Carnivore than Keto so I disagree with Mark Hyman says also meat does not destroy the planet you have all been hoodwinked and even Mark Hyman has obviously been manipulated to. We need to get cattle, sheep, pigs, deer back onto pastures, fields and STOP feeding them grains, this is not their natural food. Vegetables are not good for many of us Oxalate Toxicity. To his credit, he does stress “in theory”, but that’s actually a misuse of the word! A theory is a model supported by evidence! He also speaks in hyperbole and misuses words like “infinite” in a really sophomoric way. I think he also makes the mistake of confusing correlation with causation. The fact that the variance in these data is large suggests that this is a highly multivariate problem. Dr. Campbell is guilty of the very thing for which he indicts the entire heath-research profession: over-reductionism. That’s not to say there isn’t some fairness to his indictment of the research field, but I want to point out that all researchers have blind spots, which is why we do science. We (scientists) don’t talk that way. It reminds me of Dr. Oz. (I’m a physicist, by the way, not a medical or health scientist. But these scientific tools are common to all of science.
