Dried fruit tends to get a bad rap for being too high in sugar. However, it can be a great way to boost nutritional, antioxidant and fiber intake and serve as a healthy portable snack option. In fact, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES ), which examined data from 2001–2012, found the consumption of raisins and raisin-containing foods was associated with better nutrient. Let’s face it: Some canned vegetables are so very different from their fresh forms (think: asparagus and beets!) that plenty of kids grow up swearing off otherwise delicious foods forever. So it’s no surprise that canned foods have a bad rap.

But the bad reputation goes beyond just the food that comes inside those cans. Dried fruit can also be enjoyed as a replacement for calorie-rich, nutrient-poor desserts such as baked goods or candy. Dried fruits contain virtually the same nutrients as their fresh counterparts, so most are a good sources of vitamins A, C, potassium, fiber and folate.

They are also antioxidant powerhouses. Dried fruit gets a lot of bad rap, mainly because you’ll find concentrated levels of sugar and higher calories in most types of dried fruit. There’s no denying it, dried fruit have higher quantities of sugar than the fresh fruit from which they’re derived, and that applies to our dried mangoes too. How can I flatten my tummy overnight?

Processed fruits, like freeze-dried or unsweetened dried fruits, get a bad rap for allegedly being quite the sugar bomb, but Kane would like to put that rumor to rest. “One of the common misconceptions is that freeze-dried or dried fruit (unsweetened) has more sugar than fresh fruit. Why is it that fruitcake gets such a bad rap? My mom used to make fruitcake every year for Christmas and it was a great treat to look forward to all year. When I was in my teens I branched into my own fruitcake recipes. I have tasted commercial fruitcakes and understand why people disdain them, but feel the same way about say, Hostess fruit pies.

Prunes get a bad rap due to the fact they are often eaten by the elderly to help stay regular. But they truly do deserve to be made cool again as they are just SO outragously healthy. I spent most of my life not even realising what a prune actually was (it’s a plum by the way) and so I stayed clear of them. Prunes have such a bad rap that, in 2000, plum growers got permission from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market their fruit “dried plums” instead of “prunes.” It makes sense: How. 1 medium piece of whole fruit.

4 oz 100% fruit juice. ¼ cup dried fruit 25 calories 5g carbohydrate. 1 serving non-starchy veggies: ½ cup cooked veggies. 1 cup raw veggies. 6 oz vegetable juice. Fruit has gotten a bad rap in some circles because it’s high in a natural.

Even though whole fruits are very healthy for most people, avoid binging on fruit juice or dried fruit. Many of the fruit juices on the market aren’t even “real” fruit juices. They consist of water.

In our country, >20–25% fruits get spoiled before consumption due to improper storage and only 1.5% of total are being processed [4].

Ripe cold and moist fruits are rotten within days, and logically the body’s heat applied to such foods can also generate corrupt humors if the fruit is not quickly digested and disposed of.

  • If you make dried fruit at home and not buy the store bought, it’s very good for you. Anything pre-made, shipped in bulk, and sold retail has chemicals and preservatives. I can hardly eat pre-packaged foods anymore. I make everything from scratch from breads, to snacks, to meals. I hardly used boxed anything! Most of that stuff is rough to digest. So I get where this guy is coming from, but to say it’s all bad would be wrong. Too many anti-sugar advocates. Fruit sugar is fine. Everything in moderation. Look we’re all going to die. No one is going to outlive death. Enjoy yourself but be smart so that you feel good.

  • The conception of a high carbohydrate diet blocking fat loss is false.
When attempting keto, avoiding high carb snacks is a must but that does not make Dried Fruit a non-healthy snack. Lots of dried fruits carry a good supply of vitamins and minerals. It’s more about portion control! I’ve lost a lot of weight with keto and non-keto and I can say for certain that I find myself enjoying food a lot more on a high carb type diet. I’ve lost weight while eating dried fruit as well, apricots, raisins, dates, mulberries were just a few dried fruits I consumed while being in a caloric deficit.

  • They talk SO FAST on this! I must be getting old because my brain can hardly keep up with what they are saying and I frequently have to replay it.

  • The old kidney bean warning once again.
Many times I, and others, have eaten somebodies home cooked chili attempt, and crunched on the kidney beans.
I have never known anybody to get sick from improperly cooked kidney beans.
There appears to be as much chance of illness as there is of catching covid.

  • Where is my container of Oxalic acid, great for cleaning concrete and dealing with rust but last time I used it I put it somewhere safe! PS I hate rhubarb and after researching the Cyanide resistant properties of Cassava years ago I do worry about my relationship with food?

  • But look on the bright side the hate comments are at the bottom have 0 likes and idk how anyone understands the comments considering the fact that know one cant read stupidity

  • Don’t think tetrodotoxin is there for pufferfish to taste bad to other predators as I have seen a 1 foot long banded leporinus devour a live green spotted puffer and it seemed to really enjoy it, not spitting it out or anything. Leporinus was dead 5 minutes later.

  • NO u do not have to change anything these hatters are just dumb ass bitches i cant believe them,James don’t listen to them ur perfect just the way u are and ur makeup is super amazing keep doing what u do don’t listen to then dumb ass hatters. LOVE U SISTER JAMES:)

  • …yes that’s on the ingredients label all that added sugar. People can read the label I have a dehydrator. And I understand it’s not a typical house hold appliance but we dehydrate food all the time and don’t add anything to the fruit other than fresh lemon juice to keep the fruit from Browning.

  • I love you james soooooooooo much but that purple look reminds me of Ursula not a hate comment i love you soooooooooo much God Bless u

  • What about dehydrated berries (like strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, etc…)? Are they as equally full of sugar and bad for keto if you use your own dehydrator without adding syrups or preservatives? Just wondering…

  • What I want to know is how people figure out how to prepare these things.

I mean who looks at a toxic plant and thinks “I bet I can do (insert convoluted preperation method here) and eat it!”

  • I love cassava!!! I Love my bammy and boiled cassava and cassava chips. I also love ackee. What this video is telling me is that Jamaicans like food that are possibly toxic. Makes me love my country more.

  • I love this song however is it dedicated to men for realizing that their women come first or is this some to make women feel better?

  • Here in Brazil we ate A LOT of cassava, in very different dishes. Its not difficult to cook or prepare, you just need to boile it until soft. Actually, would be very weird eat it raw/semi raw. Try some cassava balls, filled with bacon, it’s delicious! ☺️
And we eat a lot os cashew nuts too, toasted and sweet… That one is more problematic I suppose.

  • Lake street aye it will end in peace lets show the world how worse can happen an we dont need protest an violence u hear me yeah change the world with jt in jesus name i dont care about my name jesus glory like foureal way to show we dont need violence h saw lake street burned down for much less like show that peace can be made

  • Never eat pufferfish. Just sayin’.
Oh….and your heart “stops” as you don’t get enough oxygen to the heart, if you don’t breathe. That is the reason people with pneumonia, die. The lung infection is SO bad, that the oxygen you try to breathe in, cannot be filtered into the lung’s vascular system, Thereby, decreasing oxygen to the coronary arteries of the heart. The heart HAS to get oxygen, or the heart muscle dies, thus, decreased cardiac output, heart attack. That is why pneumonia is so bad, if untreated. No one does from pneumonia…..they die from heart failure/heart attack SECONDARY to pneumonia. No one, today, should ever die from pneumonia.
And you get pneumonia from not taking care of yourself when having a cold or the flu….then pneumonia develops, then cardiac death.

  • Freeze-dried foods of fruits and vegetables made by natural cultivation have already been completed. It can be easily returned to the original state with water, and the taste and mouthfeel are restored to the original state. Those dried fruits and dried vegetables whose cells have not been destroyed can be stored for a long period of two to three years, and are expected to save the future of food shortages.

  • Hey James I absolutely adore your videos! But I suck at makeup sooo do you think you could do a make tutorial like slowed down for the beginners (me)

  • Spinach contains both calcium AND oxalic acid… go figure. Maybe that’s why Popeye’s arms are like that (lolthere’s no correlation)

  • When he mentioned cassava, I thought he would refer to their leaves which are deadly when consumed. Google it, if you don’t believe me

  • Cassava is more like a potato than a carrot, you can fry them like a potato or cook like a potato too, here it’s called mandioca, there’s various types of it, but the mentioned on the video is known as macaxeira ir mandioca brava, on the other hand the most common ones are just called mandioca and are not dangerous.

  • Sister james you are beatiful, and you are very talneted, please dont ever listen to haters they are just trying to bring you down. You are the prettiest liveing thing i have ever seen. Please dont listen to hater’s then can leave and find something better to do then judge you. I love all your videos, and you are my favorite youtuber ever!!!!!!!!

  • The dried cranberries in my cupboard have added sugar but if you dry fruit yourself you do not need to add sugar. We were traveling last week and I ate some homemade dried persimmons. I think it was a good snack choice.

  • shout out to jamaicans!! we might eat four of these foods in the span of a few hours like nothin! just had ackee and rice an peas TODAY!

  • Anything consumed in incorrect quantities tends to be unhealthy. Dried fruit is NOT a “convenience food”.
I dehydrate bananas to prevent them from ripening excessively and keep them for extended periods of time. Same with apples. If you know how many chips equal one fruit then there is no problem whatsoever. And yes, anything store bought and processed is a gamble in itself.
This video generalizes. And that is just as bad as no information at all.

  • Ackee and saltfish one of the best Island Traditions!:-) I grew up eating tons of rhubarb Raw and people say Don’t eat rhubarb raw it will poison you well it will not poison anybody!

  • I buy dried prunes and apricots with no added preservatives or sugar, and both of those have high potassium, which is something a large portion of humanity is short of.

  • Wow, if pufferfish is that poisonous and people still put in the effort to risk eating it, then it must taste really good… right?

  • most of your reasons for calling dried fruit unhealthy is the same excuse vegans say about meat products like the blood, pus, and hormones. or saying coffee is unhealthy because people add sugar, CAFO cream/milk, etc
    didn’t like this video

  • Did he seriously talk about how unripe ackee fruit literally cures type two diabetis, but its a bad thing because it make people sick…because most people dont have issues of high blood sugar. That sounds like it could save countless lives from sugar shock and sugar comas. Maybe it is that i know about 20 diabetics that I see that…or maybe once again we are supposed to hear “this thing is bad, don’t ask why though” and peoples eyes cross outwords and they are like “uhhhhderrrp…ok. As long as the tv man says so”… Yup…
