    Noticed the table @ 53:14 lists amount of sugar in tsp for various foods but it looks like that should have been grams (divide all the numbers by approx. 4 to get the number of teaspoons). Also, Ms. Newman probably misspoke re: Heritage Flakes, the grams of sugar are as listed on her table, and my cereal box 4 grams of sugar per 3/4 cup serving.

    I think it will be helpful with new labeling to see the ADDED sugars in processed foods, especially dairy foods like yogurt so that the milk sugars can be distinguished from the added sugars.

  • This maybe a little off the subject but I believe that a plant based diet helps with weight loss. However with this life style you still have to be aware of calories. When they say you can eat endless amounts of plants that is not true. Legumes like beans for a half cup is a 100 to 120 calories. Lentils for a third of a cup is 130 calories. That is pretty high considering that you have to eat large amounts to get full. At least I do. I think you can eat unlimited amounts of green leafy veggies. However when it comes to potatoes, grains, nuts and beans you still have to be aware of your portions.

  • A potential vision/solution: take the for-profit middleman out of health care instead; institute a single-payer system, free at the point of service, which allows each person in the country to choose their doctor irrespective of their job (or whether or not they have one); remove subsidies for unhealthy foods; appoint a plant-based Surgeon General; back initiatives like Plant Pure Nation pods and community-based classes on plant-based nutrition with federal tax dollars; replenish the food deserts with healthy food and support local co-ops, etc.; train medics in nutrition; have them teach their patients, too, and prescribe fruits and vegetables and other whole plant foods. Then sit back and watch as everyone in the US finally gets proper health care coverage like we have in Europe; observe the cost of health care plummeting; and once the chronic diseases have been dealt with, start diverting research dollars once destined for curable chronic illnesses into emergency care, regenerative medicine (new organs, regenerating broken spinal cords, brain injuries, etc.) and other illnesses that can’t yet be healed, including infectious/contagious diseases and our potential post-antibiotic future.

  • UC is waisting our tax payer dollars. Evidence shows a whole foods, plant based diet eliminates these problems. Why waste a bunch of resources tiptoeing around the issue. Eliminate meat, dairy and especially eggs from our diets. As she mentions the drugs are not effective especially when considering the side effects.   • Started the Mcdougall program 6 months ago went from 215 pounds to 166 pounds at 6 feet tall. From 40 inch waist to 36 inches. I eat as much as I want lots of potatoes and rice, lots of salads, healty soups, chili with no meat. The arthritis is gone and I feel 10 years younger….not tired all the time.

  • So you avoid beef/some animal products or at least not mention them in the recommendation etc. because it has cholesterol/saturated fats and raises ones LDL-(small particle)….but you recommend fish that contains heavy metals and cholesterol/saturated fats……logic = not existent

    there are other sources for ALA /DHA etc. like they mention….so why recommend animal products

  • Great talk for the most part, but missing a comment on the Coconut fat yes, its saturated, but it is an MCT and hence not metabolized the same as long-chain fatty acids.

Our teeth are more like other mammals who are herbivores rather than carnivores. We physically have very little in common with carnivores. Also, animal slaughterhouses and wet markets must be eliminated. If the economy crashes, perhaps people will homestead and grow their own. How can people be so heartless to animals? Id LOVE to see how you would advise people to grow sustainable plant based diets from home. If the economy fails, we will have to be self reliant and hopefully people be more educated about the stupidity of eating animal flesh.

  • To lose weight on a whole food plant-based diet, remember to:
    Transition slowly.
    Eat a variety of whole food plant-based foods (and stop stressing about deficiencies)
    Avoid skipping meals.
    Fill up on whole grains.
    Cut out oil.
    Snack when you’re hungry.
    Keep going even when you hit a snag.

  • So you avoid beef/some animal products or at least not mention them in the recommendation etc. because it has cholesterol/saturated fats and raises ones LDL-(small particle)….but you recommend fish that contains heavy metals and cholesterol/saturated fats……logic = not existent

    also “gras finished” beef /animal products are not sustainable as the United Nations and many other institutes concluded

  • My granddad had a stroke. He mostly ate fish. Not much processed meat, because he had already had a heart attack 10 years ago. Then this year he has a stroke. But I guess that makes sense as well. Eating fish and potatoes, sauce. (With milk protein i guess)

  • Not sure why animals are still being used to show this information. Look around, look at what people eat and look at their BMI… Then again, the follow up to that would be to ask those people to eat more fruit and vegetable and no one seems to want to do that consistently.

  • UC is waisting our tax payer dollars. Evidence shows a whole foods, plant based diet eliminates these problems. Why waste a bunch of resources tiptoeing around the issue. Eliminate meat, dairy and especially eggs from our diets. As she mentions the drugs are not effective especially when considering the side effects. UC needs a dept dedicated to fighting these industries and promoting a healthy diet for all of us and really we all eat can eat the same thing.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this great talk by Michael! He’s such good value always, and an amusing and engaging speaker. My hubby and I are living proof of what he says about the whole-food plant-based lifestyle and weight loss. For the last several months, my hubby has at last decided to eat only what I give him and cut out all the junk he was eating between meals. He’s also been attending a weight loss club on the recommendation of our doctor but not following their diet! He has lost on average 1-2 lb each week and everyone is now remarking on how slim he is looking. Recently he was suffering severe muscle pains and discovered it was a side effect of the statins which he stopped taking. He informed the doctor of this two or three weeks later and he called him in to have a cholesterol test. His cholesterol level and blood pressure had plummeted to normal and the doctor said it was like looking at the result of a different individual altogether. When he can get around to having another sleep test, we are hoping he will be able to dispense with his C-pap machine as well, as he believes his obstructive sleep apnoea has disappeared too.

    I lost most of my weight over several years doing intermittent fasting, but when I discovered this way of life I gave that up, and now eat as much as I like of all this gorgeous whole-food plant-based food and the weight has continued to fall. We are living proof that this works. I’ve become such an advocate for this way of life, but am suffering a lot of resistance from the rest of the extended family! I think this is probably because they can see the evidence with their own eyes, but are not prepared to make the change, thinking, as I once did, that it would be impossible to give up meat, eggs and cheese, and we are a constant challenge to them and they don’t like it!

  • This maybe a little off the subject but I believe that a plant based diet helps with weight loss. However with this life style you still have to be aware of calories. When they say you can eat endless amounts of plants that is not true. Legumes like beans for a half cup is a 100 to 120 calories. Lentils for a third of a cup is 130 calories. That is pretty high considering that you have to eat large amounts to get full. At least I do. I think you can eat unlimited amounts of green leafy veggies. However when it comes to potatoes, grains, nuts and beans you still have to be aware of your portions.
