  • What about the Harvard Professor David Sinclair. He suggests not to take metformin the days you train since it councel out some of the effects of training? What is the explanation for this?

  • Outbreak’s Adapt is the best one I’ve tried. I’m a type2 diabetic and control my sugar thru diet, exercise, & supplementing instead of meds. Adapt works better than 500mg of Metformin for me. Another one that comes in at a close 2nd I’ve tried is RPG from RedCon1.

  • Definitely trying Berbertine suffering with hypothyroidism doctors don’t have a clue why I can’t lose weight. I have to help myself it seems money rules the world for alot of doctor’s.

  • I remember seeing a pubmed document that said metformin lowers the A1C an average of 11 1/2 percent. I did not take notes on what document.
My doctor keep questioning why I need to take metformin, and when I mentioned the amount it lowers A1C she looked at my current level, 5.2, and just dropped the subject like a hot potato.
I have added berberine to a liposomal formulation I make for a very serious autoimmune disease, which is seronegative, and since the symptoms begin to return within a few days whenever I stop taking the formula I have been taking this for over 4 years, and tried stopping it over a dozen times.
If the carbs go over 30 or 40 grams per day then my arthritis flares up in my knee, where it is bone on bone since 2007, in about 5 hours. The pain is a throbbing pain and feels like somebody is pinching at that spot with a pair of tweezers. The pain level is proportional to the carb amount. It took me over 20 years to figure this out. kicking out all carbs is very difficult for most of us, but with some experience we can make better tasting keto recipes than almost any carb recipe, including ice cream. I simmer hazelnuts and walnuts in a big tub of butter for a few minutes and this gives it all kinds of novel flavors, especially when fresh.

So I take berberine and metformin and probably will for life.

I also make a formula with the Vladimir Titorenko 6 herbs and resveratrol. ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6349451/)

I also take what David Sinclair does in the morning, as a liposomal formulation to save money.

This recent research looks very promising, with David Sinclair weighing in a few days after the Katcher, Horvath, publication the beginning of May:

  • Would you recommend taking it with zero carb meal (like my breakfast eggs/butter/cheese/ham) or only with meals that contain some carbs (salads, vegetables)?

  • I took Berberine and suffered the most horrific gut pain. I stopped the product and months later tried again hoping it was just a bug I had and it was nothing but three days of excruciating pain again. I think everyone who suffers stomach issues should be very very cautious or avoid berberine
    all together.

  • I’m happy to share that I’ve been taking berberine for at least 6 months and although I’m never sick, I do feel better but I’m not sure I’m what ways (plural) I CAN attest that it does me a world of good as a newly menopausal woman at age 58 if you can believe that!!! I support all that you mention in your video and have done extensive research myself and I share the info the rest is for them to decide. I don’t force anyone AND more importantly, I never share or suggest something that I haven’t tried and proven true. We have managed to reverse my young son’s Crohn’s disease naturally after 4!years of tears, ignorance, trial and error to knowing what I’m doing My kitchen became a lab and my beautiful son was my sweet little mouse… I have become a bone broth and queen! Always have it on hand, I know my supplements, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, etc. I am on board with berberine definitely worth a try! People have to know that it is not immediate definitely give it at least two weeks before you start seeing or feeling a difference. And then always make sure that you know why you’re taking it this way you can track your progress. Thank you for a lovely complete and I will quit video! I am now following you!

  • Barberry is put on rice in persian culture for so many years now. I guess it meant to lower the sugar level (caused by Carbohydrate) in rice beside looking pretty.

  • I have a question, can i take metformin even my bloodsugar levels are low and i am not diabetic? And why shouldnt i take it when i workout?

  • You mention ” antibacterial ” but you might add, or change that term or thought to “anti parasitic” as it is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and works against larger entities.

  • I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH TYPE 2, I AM ON METFORMIN AND MY BLOOD SUGARS ARE NEARLY A 1/3 OF WHAT THE WERE ON MY VERY FIRST BLOOD TEST, PRE BREAKFAST 17.9, NOW I AM 5-6 CONSISTANTLY. I HAVE CUT OUT SUGAR,BREAD,RICE,PASTA BANANAS,BOXED CEREALS AND OATMEALS. I FEEL WAY BETTER AND ENERGY IS UP. 10 DAYS IN I AM EXPERIENCING BLURRY VISION WHICH IS LINKED TO THE DRASTIC BLOOD SUGAR READING AND CAN RETURN TO NORMAL IN 1-8 WEEKS. SO NOW I AM WONDERING IF I SHOULD TAKE METFORMIN ONE MEAL AND BERBERINE THE NEXT OR DROP THE METFORMIN PERIOD?

  • I have just pulled up several articles one being from NCBI.NLM.NIH.gov that Berberine is a promising candidate in preventing and treating NAFLD.

  • Berberine made me VERY SICK. I took it for 2 months, 1 capsule a day & then what seemed like out of nowhere it reacted badly with my body. It caused extreme stomach pain, painfully swollen intestine & I felt SO unwell. I wasn’t sure what it was, so i had to test to find out the cause. After removing & adding it back, I found the problem! I looked online & quite a few people can have THIS reaction! PLEASE PLEASE be Careful with this Supplement!

  • “Always check with your health care practitioner.” Sadly Mike most MDs don’t know squat except to dispense big pharma’s pills. Not intended as knock against you and I know what you’re getting at, but sadly most MDs are a joke and completely ignorant of the many topics you discuss on your channel.

  • Thank you Naomi for this factual video. The only problem I have with this protocol is the expense. If I were to take 500mg. 3x a day it would cost me approx. $60.00 @ month which I could not afford at this time. Aside from that I think it’s a wonderful supplement.

  • Thank you
I am using the powder of the bark of berberis vulgaris with boiling water.
Have it the same effect and what’s the good dose if so?

  • Thank you for this amazing information, actually I have never heard about it. But after knowing that, I will definitely look for it. Thank you again for your time and support.

  • Diagnosed as prediabetic, I did some PubMed research finding that Berberine is as effective as the drug(s) Metformin, Glucophage. After Dinner to next day lunch intermittent fasting and taking Berberine my Hac1 is 5.2. Start Ht/Wt was 6’3″ 245 lbs now 6’3″ 199 lbs.

  • Hey man im taking it 500after breakfast and 500after with 4 5hours later and i get so much bloated and my stomach on fire im taking it wrong? What you prefer to me

  • I learned about berberine from one of my classes when I attended acupuncture school. A Chinese physician won a Nobel Prize by introducing this herb to Western countries. It was compared to Metformin for its properties for decreasing glucose levels. I had prediabetes two years ago. My glucose levels became normal last year. My doctor was amazed. Then I just started keto about 6 months ago and went from 170 down to 134 lbs.

  • Nice content how long before you would go to the gym before taking it then drinking fast acting carbs to shuttle the carbs & nutrients to the muscle?

  • Naomi, for those who’ve complained about berberine making them sick, have you tried or recommended dihydroberberine? Hard to find but much better in digestion.

  • Day 1 of berberine. Fighting high cortisol and insulin resistance (diagnosed T2D with Hb1Ac 8.4). Been on keto and IF (OMAD) for a few weeks now and only dropped 3kg (likely water retention). Very conscious of stress (grief, trauma, long term stressors) on my ability to improve insulin sensitivity. I took berberine yesterday and I woke up full of energy at 6am (unheard of for me), and had the motivation to go for a walk (something I’d been wanting to do, but couldn’t overcome some weird mental block). I feel energetic, my mind feels sharp and my mood is elevated. That’s in less than 24 hours. Gotta say, I’m feeling the berb!

    Edit: just a typo:)

  • Thank you for posting this very informative video. It has cleared up much of the confusion around metformin and berberine for me. Had no clue about the bioavailability (or lack there of)of berberine. Metformin it is!

  • I heard you mention berberine in a more recent video so I ordered some, and now I have been taking it for the last 4 days and stumbled upon this video. I wanted to try it because I have insane sugar cravings, and Easter is the worst as I am hooked on solid chocolate bunnies! But really, any time of year I am hooked on sugar, at 41 over the years I have slowly put on weight and I eat mindlessly at times. So from the first dose I noticed my cravings pretty much disappeared and I started eating the real food from my fridge! I am not someone that has junk at home, but I will give in to cravings and drive the 2 min it takes to get somewhere junky! lol Anyways, I have been loving the feeling of being in control again of what I eat. I had a slip yesterday, where I took one too early in the day and I had signs that my blood sugar went too low. So now I am just going to take one in the middle of the day and only take a second in the evening if I think I feel cravings or stress to cause cravings that night. Its such a drastic mindset change, before this my mind was filled with thoughts of food and my voices battling and deciding what to do, now my mind doesn’t focus on food at all which means I can make the decisions when I actually feel hungry and so far those decisions have been very healthy. I plan to take this for a month or two until I feel my taste buds are back to “normal” and I can deal with the cravings on my own. Thank you so much for all of the info you share!!:)

  • Amazing! Do you know reputable brands without additives?

On a side note: I don’t want to be weird, but i can’t believe how beautiful you are..

  • I have noticed you are recommending 1500 mg of berberine per day. They are people who may have high tolerance to berberine. Do you think 1200 mg per day would be better for them?

  • Brad, if you were not a Dr. with easy access to Metformin would you be taking Berberine instead, even with the limited data presently on Berberine?

  • Is this supplement something that would directly counteract the poor effects weight-wise of antipsychotics (Slowed BMR, Glucose metabolism, insulin resistance) in someone? If so is this more or less a long term fix or would it be something you would have to do indefinitely provided the person stopped taking the medicines causing said effects (slowed bmr, glucose metabolism hinderance, increased insulin resistance).

  • Amazing! Do you know reputable brands without additives?

On a side note: I don’t want to be weird, but i can’t believe how beautiful you are..

  • Did he mean 1,000 mg per day or per week? He said both. Also, what was the specific name of the brand/type of capsule he recommended? And who is the supplier for that?

  • Hi there so enjoyed this. I have been taking metformin fir about 8 years now. I take 500mg a day as my Doc prescriptivists Ed as she said I was pre-diabetic. Does that sound too much as you said you are only taking 1mg a day! ThAnk you.

  • I’ve been OMAD for a year now. I think I’ll give this stuff a try and see if it makes my morning fasting more effective. Very good info, thank you.

  • ISN’T THIS DAN GUY THE ASSHOLE WHO GOT A SEPSIS LEG INFECTION FROM A STEROID SHOT AND THEN BEGGED PEOPLE ON YOUTUBE TO GOFUND HIM FOR HIS MEDICAL BILLS………………….WHAT A DIRT BAG!

  • Sorry Doc, but C. Elegans is not a bacteria ( 1:37 of the video). “C. elegans is a nematode—a member of the phylum Nematoda: Nematoda”… Other than that thanks for your videos, they are quite informative.

  • I feel a lot better with it in my life Mike, thanks for mentioning it (I think it was yourself maybe a year or two ago where I first heard about berberine). Sugar is definitely my kryptonite and I take berberine in the mornings and it seems to help my mood, my energy level and seems to help keep me in a better chemical balance zone. I will consider what you said about not being on it all the time; it’s effects have been pretty profound so it’s tempting for me to get dependant on it. If I get on a good run (maybe a week or two of good productive living) I’ll consider taking a week off and observe and changes.. Thanks again for your information:-)

  • So there is this study done by Peterson in elderly people that metformin does inhibit muscle mass / gain, im going in PCT in 2 weeks. Bad idea i assume till about 3 months later?

  • Thank you, I hadn’t heard of this. Going to try this. Although my A1C is now 4.7 5’s thanks to eating Keto I want to try and see what effect it has on Ketones and as well as when I hit Plateaus in my weight loss.

  • You are doing a great public service with these videos.:) I tried berberine a couple of years ago and I couldn’t digest it. I was unwell for days. I agree that the research around Metformin is solid; and my blood sugar is already a bit high so I’d be a good candidate.

  • Taking metformin has lowered my blood pressure and I have dropped 20 pounds half muscle . It’s difficult to get an And erection on metformin The only thing that lowered my blood pressure before was hot yoga for months on end.

  • I HAVE WATCHED A DOZEN VIDEOS ON BERBERINE AND HAVE YET TO FIND 1 NEG EXPERIENCE OR SIDE EFFECTS, IN FACT EVERY VIDEO HAS BEEN POSITIVE AND ADDED ANOTHER POS EFFECT TO THE BODY

  • In that Netflix documentary also the scientist Cynthia Kenyon speaks, who found out about the anti aging effect of Low Carb. Are you also going to take that trough?:-)
I’m pretty sure that it’s not just the intermittent fasting on its own, but the combination of both which optimzes…

  • I’ve seen many videos that show studies that Metformin decreases muscle mass and strength. Dr Rhonda Patrick for example, and a number of other MDs. I don’t think it’s just muscle volume, it’s actual strength and muscle. Did I read that wrong? Anyone here seen more strength while on Metformin?

  • hey mike Hey, what’s going on? I took the PRE NUTRABIO for the first time today. perfect product works great.

I’ve been working out weights and CARDIO for two hours. perfect.
    PRE WORKOUT

  • Hi there so enjoyed this. I have been taking metformin fir about 8 years now. I take 500mg a day as my Doc prescriptivists Ed as she said I was pre-diabetic. Does that sound too much as you said you are only taking 1mg a day! ThAnk you.

  • You have the most amazing content I’ve been binging all day it’s why I haven’t responded to your other comments yet but I will Dr. Brad!!
I’m just gonna say this here I’m glad I saw this I’m not comfortable with the risk of lactic acidosis. When I began berberine about 2-3 months ago for the first month I took 1500mg a day total, 500 t.i.d. Then after a month I went down to a gram a day, 500 b.i.d which is what I still take, I have a lot left though, I’m gonna discontinue completely for one week. After that week i will resume at 500 a day only until I run out then I will no longer purchase it! I will switch to Metformin once it’s out sourcing it won’t be a problem.

  • I was reading that the Berberine HCL increase in AMPK will inherently suppress muscle hypertrophy in muscle cells is this something to be concerned about?

  • Wow, I was JUST going to research this myself today.:-)

    CURRENT STACK (49 years old):
    K2 (MK-7)
D3 (when not getting enough sunlight only)
    Low dose Aspirin
    Trans-resveratrol
    Sulphoraphane
    Fish Oil
High Quality Olive Oil (oleic acid) used to take vitamins

  • All of your work really amazes me. It seems that science is quite divided on nutrition, on one side you have people like yourself, along with people like Peter Attia, who are looking at everything very differently than people like Layne Norton and Eric Helms. A lot the evidence seems to support that time restricted eating has a lot of benefits for weight loss WHILE MAINTAINING HEALTH, as opposed to just lowering calories. People put this into practice, get super lean, feel great, maintain muscle and strength, and all the while mainstream science seems to snub their noses at it. I brought this up to Layne in a thread about a guy who was doing keto, eating triple his daily maintenance calories AND LOSING WEIGHT. This guy was a fitness model and said he had never done anything like this and felt so good while maintaining/losing weight. Laynes response was “He’s being paid to say that by his sponsors!!!!!” He was so mad!

  • Hi Brad, I was considering taking metformin as an anti-age “supplement”. However, there may be a testosterone lowering effect: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1038/oby.2001.90 What do you think about this “side effect”? I would like to keep my testosterone level high. Your expertise would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks, Tamas

  • Berberine changed my life. I am diagnosed hypoglycemic.
My body born with, I run on low blood pressure.
Add 13 colon rectal surgeries, in ten years, first was a botched surgery
all reactive of poor diet, stress, no cancer. I have been surgery ailment free for over 17 years.
Eating disorders from toddler thru late 20s, the cause due to pain in the gut, my body attempting digestion. Food caused pain.
Keto in 2016, Berberine added, my blood sugar for the first time in my life ever, I was in control. One 500mg Berberine capsule, within 10 mins all symptoms of crash eliminated, hunger pains due to crash eliminated. Fasting too, to be within my limitations, vs my body screaming for carbs and or inflammatory foods. I have it on hand in my arsenal. It has so many benefits.
It too fights MRSA that right there says a lot.

  • Thank you
I am using the powder of the bark of berberis vulgaris with boiling water.
Have it the same effect and what’s the good dose if so?

  • Saw this last year, I knew a heathly Microbiome was important, but now I always start with a GI Mapp before evaluations. Patients can bring a copy of a sample GI MAPP result into a healthcare physician and get insurance coverage on most line items.
    https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/04/180410100937.htm

  • Some of your supplement recommendations you state you only have on “REST” days, what qualifies as a rest day and what if you dont have many “rest” days? I ask this as Ive used small does of metformin and always get extreme muscle pains when I am active and have basically concluded I cannot use it unless I am sedentary. Btw Hba1c always sits at 4.7%

  • Does a 15 minute walk considered as an strenous exercise that would merit me not to take met thans for the reply and this informative video

  • Mike, berberine can potentially kill some good microbiome too. Coptis in
Chinese medicine is a strong heat or toxin cleanser for body’s middle jiao (middle burner). I have no doubt that it works on ampk, but I think we need to examine it for long term use.

  • Mike, you mentioned in passing that berberine influences the sleep cycle. Do you have any insight into it’s proposed mechanism of action in this regard? I am dealing with chronic insomnia, and want to change my sleep cycle to conform with the sun cycle. In other words, I am wanting to shift from a night worker schedule to a farmer’s schedule (up with the sun, and sleeping when the sun is down).

  • Mike, you committed before to use contrasting markers! You have seen from the comments in past videos how much of a problem that is for some people. What gives?

  • Drinking a lot of water, a whole lot can evacuate sugar from the blood when urinating. When a diabetic doesn’t drink a lot of water the sugar circulates without being used causing organ damage. Which leads to slow death usually.

  • 21:45 “they would give these rats 100 mg of berberine for every kg of body weight”

Rat metabolism is 7x that of a human. Therefore, the equivalent dose in a 70 kg human would be only 1,000 mg. Humans, therefore, are not being given tiny doses compared to those given rats. They are being given doses that are physiologically about the same.

  • That is correct. I know first hand, and a family member who also tried it dies nothing. I have been type 2 since the eighties. I am 5’9″ 180 lbs exercise eat healthy, the whole thing. Take 2000 mg metformin a day. The berberine did nothing. I tried 1800 berberine. NO, it’s snake oil for full blown diabetics. I spoke to the health store owner and she got feed back from other customers saying the same thing. Maybe it can help pre-diabetics but not full blown diabetics.

  • Brad, thank you for the excellent content you keep putting out there, it helps a lot. Now, here’s my way of helping you back, as a doc in consumer behaviour. Change the ‘smash the thumb up button reasoning’ from “it helps with the youtube algorithm” to “it motivates me to keep researching these molecules/subject/xx and provide you with high-quality content”. 😉 Lots of love from the UK and keep doing the good work!

  • Hello, Thanks for video. i am taking Berberine + Coconut oil + Milk Thistle, hope this increase bio availability and good for Liver.
and sorry my English not very well i don’t get, in training days Metformin or Berberine is bad?

  • So will taking metformin help lose body fat and help built muscle when working out at gym.? Berfor or after? im looking to build muscle and lose weight quick:-)

  • Metformin lowers cognitive performance. I don’t believe it helps for anti-aging. I know two people who’s congnitive has lowered, one by 30 percent and the other by 10 percent. Metformin blocks b-12 and like Statins probably blocks coq10.

  • Finally I’ve been waiting for this! I’ve been taking Berberine on and off before meals and now I can experiment and see what it does for me on fasting days. Great video as always. Thanks Mike!

  • Why would anyone want to take something that lowers their blood sugar while they are fasting?? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me!!!!!

  • interesting in the Latin American country I travel in you can get Metformin made in a Chile lab ( developed country ) over the counter. take an 850mg at night a 30 day supply is about $9 from a private medical clinic pharmacy

  • Doesn’t know what his talking about, esp in his insulin works and really should have researched it to fit into his video. Instead he gets stuck in his explanation

  • Does a 15 minute walk considered as an strenous exercise that would merit me not to take met thans for the reply and this informative video

  • Pharmaceutical companies will say ANYTHING to keep you from using non prescription supplements. Watch Dr Jason Fung on how those big companies manipulate data, and control publications.

  • Do you recommend we take metformin as a supplement to extend lifespan? I’m 31 and don’t have diabetes, could it lower my blood sugar levels below a normal range? Also, what if we exercise 5-6 days a week, should we only take it 1-2 times a week on rest days?

  • great video! like many here I read Dr. Sinclair’s book and try to follow his regiment. I also had some difficulty acquiring metformin in the US and though this is not practical for most, if you live close to the Mexican border or have a friend there, its available OTC for cheap

  • You should have taken the blood sugar after eating the bar
Then the next day taken two caps immediately before eating the same bar, 30 mins later take the random blood sugar to see if the GDA prevented the spike which is the point

  • This is one that looks like a to good to be true..But I’m going through a plateau and my Glucose levels have gone up to 100 -108 and ketones at 0.5 0.8 and I’m strict Keto with a preference of more carnivore… Have had great results after 3.5 years but I’m now in a fine tune and trying to loose the last 20 Lbs of fat..i hope this will help

  • I have a question, can i take metformin even my bloodsugar levels are low and i am not diabetic? And why shouldnt i take it when i workout?

  • Mrs Emma Stockdale London Uk
    Hi Dr Brad Stanfield,
I have been a type 2 diabetic for over 22 years.
I had not learnt or understood what Metformin can really do for me.
Thank you for that enlightenment and knowledge you just shared.
I was very happy after listening to you. Thank you

  • kidney patients should not take metformin, but berberine yes: “Metformin has traditionally been regarded as contraindicated in chronic kidney disease (CKD), though guidelines in recent years have been relaxed to permit therapy if the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is > 30 mL/min. The main problem is the perceived risk of lactic acidosis (LA).”

  • Most people take Metformin for Diabetes Blood sugar control, not lifespan… take it on an empty stomach or not and then shit your pants:) Good stuff

  • This is helpful for me. 63, at GW, thin, do IF 16/8, 18/6. Higher protein diet. Afternoon ketones were 1.3 and BG 105. (Post two hours lean protein meal). I do tend to run in higher side. I don’t check BG often. What is the best time to do so?

  • Since metformin just mimics the effects of calorie restriction and intermittent fasting and long term fasting, I’m just going to stick to long term fasting, and intermittent fasting with calorie restriction on a ketogenic diet.

  • Berberine worked for me, but unfortunately it gave me stomach problems.:( Not always without side effects for everyone. People need to be aware of that.

  • If you are diabetic you have MORE insulin in your bloodstream. Your cells are just resistant to it. Metformin inhibits muscle building. You don’t want to take it on lift days.

  • Dr Ted gave me a script for a Freestyle Libre. I figure that will tell me where I might me running on ketones too.
I take BERBERINE to mitigate insulin.

  • Sorry Doc, but C. Elegans is not a bacteria ( 1:37 of the video). “C. elegans is a nematode—a member of the phylum Nematoda: Nematoda”… Other than that thanks for your videos, they are quite informative.

  • Is berberine better in combination with anything like exercise or other foods/supplements? Also is the effets on the insulin resistance and glucose metabolism lasting if those things were damaged in the first place? Thanks

  • I HAVE WATCHED A DOZEN VIDEOS ON BERBERINE AND HAVE YET TO FIND 1 NEG EXPERIENCE OR SIDE EFFECTS, IN FACT EVERY VIDEO HAS BEEN POSITIVE AND ADDED ANOTHER POS EFFECT TO THE BODY

  • Could you do a video on the gorilla diet something about turning fiber the greens they chew on into fatty acids. How does fiber convert to fatty acids??

  • Metformin lowers cognitive performance. I don’t believe it helps for anti-aging. I know two people who’s congnitive has lowered, one by 30 percent and the other by 10 percent. Metformin blocks b-12 and like Statins probably blocks coq10.

  • I run 3 miles then walk 1.5 miles and stretch and do 52 pushups, 100 sit ups, light 3 lb dumbell. And 52 hand grip exercises every day. I was nearly diagnosed for being just over the threshold 106 on fasting blood glucose levels 12 years back but I have lost 60 lbs and maintain at my correct weight at 154…people tell me I am too thin occasionally. Thinking of Berberine because my providers would most likely not prescribe metforman for an off label use…I will ask. But it is rare that I take a lay day on exercise. I do have hyperlipidemia…quit statins worried about increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes…taking niacin now..so..

  • i have PCOS and i’ve tried metformin 500mg 3x a day. I got so sick. I was having panic attacks. Doctor never informed me about the side effects being your going to be depleted of VitB12. I could not sleep and function and eventually lost my job. I thought I was going insane. It was so bad. I have to pick the pieces myself… and take turmeric, ovasitol, berberine, ashwaghanda, holy basil and all the other supplements just to keep my sanity back. Got a better job and been taking berberine and it has been great. God really provided everything.. we dont need synthetic medicines.

  • Since going on Metformin, I can lift everyday and my muscles never get sore the next day, and I am gaining strength in all lifts. benching more than ever. it goes against everything the studies say.

  • No matter how valuable the information, if it’s not accessible to the viewer, it’s valueless! So, don’t be in a rush. Take the time to review your videos and look at them from your viewers point of view. Then you might discover that the choice of marker was incorrect and you should have left the diagram up long enough for all of us to read all of the information! Forgive me if I was overly critical.

  • If Berberine is so effective at expelling glucose from the body, if someone has normal to low levels of blood glucose already as is the case with many low carb/ketogenic/and intermittent fasting practitioners then isn’t there a danger of hypoglycemia? When these dietary practices are done by themselves, because they don’t rely on an exogenous agent to lower blood glucose, they allow the body’s natural feed back mechanisms to elevate glucagon, thus preventing hypoglycemia. However, adding something line Berberine may circumvent this feedback loop, thus leading to dangerously low blood glucose. Am I way off on this? Am I missing something?

  • Barberry is put on rice in persian culture for so many years now. I guess it meant to lower the sugar level (caused by Carbohydrate) in rice beside looking pretty.

  • Can you be in ketosis if the urine test strips do not register ketosis, while following a ketogenic diet? It took 4 days of water fasting to register ketosis on the test strips. Thanks

  • If your doctor doesn’t want to give you metformin despite your efforts to discuss the anti aging effects, then that doctor is not up to date and its time to FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR.

  • Might it be that since Berberine is a natural supplement, no profit motivation of the pharma industry has, hence it does not have the studies that metformin has..Personally I am taking R form ALA for its antioxidant effects, which also benefits for glucose metabolism. I wonder whether ALA has similar impacts on insulin sensitivity as Berberine has??

  • I’m on the fence about taking Berberine for longevity and cholesterol lowering benefits. Would you shed some light on the following SCARY statement by David Tome Nootropics Expert (last 5 min of video) “Studies with animals show that Berberine could cause DNA damage promoting tumor growth. This DNA damage can be avoided by using Milk Thistle with Berberine. The radical-scavenging and antioxidant properties of the compound silymarin in Milk Thistle appears to counteract this effect.”

  • GUESS WHAT?! For a Type 2 Diabetic that has had HORRIBLE side effects on Metformin only to switch over to Berberine and have NO side effects (slowly built up to 1200 mgs) I FOUND THAT BERBERINE LOWERED MY HBA1C BETTER THAN METFORMIN AND NO FEAR OF DYING FROM KETOACIDOSIS…SO THINK AGAIN MR. SPEAKER!!

  • I have been on this research for a long time now. I am a clinical Anesthetist and have a PhD in Physiology. The reason for me mentioning this is that I understand physiology and how to differentiate between a good study or not. I am in no way an expert on longevity or health medicine. I take K2, D3, NMN, Resveratrol, the only two scripts I take as far as my longevity medicine/supplements are Fish oil(prescription only) and Metformin 1GRam HS. I work out five days a week. My question is because I heard you say you take metformin on your rest nights. If I work out 5 days a week and take metformine 7 nights a week. Is there any down side to that? Bedside the obvious. Hypoglycemia, G.I. side effects etc. it seems to be working well for me I didn’t know if I was missing something?

  • I took 1 capsule of Berberin one day and I had horrible constipation that I had never had in my life and was shitting out blood for next 4 days. Be aware not everything advertised on you tube is good for you or what it claims to be. Now I have whole bottle of expensive supplement that is going to the rubbish. Never again!!!!!!

  • Do you recommend we take metformin as a supplement to extend lifespan? I’m 31 and don’t have diabetes, could it lower my blood sugar levels below a normal range? Also, what if we exercise 5-6 days a week, should we only take it 1-2 times a week on rest days?

  • Brad, thank you for the excellent content you keep putting out there, it helps a lot. Now, here’s my way of helping you back, as a doc in consumer behaviour. Change the ‘smash the thumb up button reasoning’ from “it helps with the youtube algorithm” to “it motivates me to keep researching these molecules/subject/xx and provide you with high-quality content”. 😉 Lots of love from the UK and keep doing the good work!

  • Taking metformin has lowered my blood pressure and I have dropped 20 pounds half muscle . It’s difficult to get an And erection on metformin The only thing that lowered my blood pressure before was hot yoga for months on end.

  • If it makes your poop yellow however stop use immediately that is an indication the Berberine is getting intimate with your fecal matter, the fecal matters family is very old school and they don’t approve of any other colors some might say their racist. If you do however notice this you must go to your doctor ASAP to get checked for Hyperberberinemia…. if this goes unchecked hepatoxicity is waiting just around the corner as well as possible renal impairment. Otherwise Berberine is great although I discontinued it and switched to a gram of metformin at night instead. If you do your own research you will see metformin is a more proven compound to get the exact same benefits you are after with Berberine. You can almost think of metformin as very cheap highly pure pharmaceutical grade Berberine in a way kind of. Not really but kind of. The pathway you are attempting to activate with Berberine was never proven in humans yet however metformin has been proven in humans with a extremely lengthy safety profile. So especially for the anti aging benefits I suggest metformin over Berberine any day of the week. However once they establish he same profile in humans with Berberine and they do the proper human trials with Berberine then I would absolutely consider going back on Berberine instead, however once anyone does their own research they will come to the conclusion if they have any sense that metformin should be chosen over Berberine.

  • Thank you for posting this very informative video. It has cleared up much of the confusion around metformin and berberine for me. Had no clue about the bioavailability (or lack there of)of berberine. Metformin it is!

  • More great stuff thanks! I have no blood sugar issue, but do have elevated LDL (7.55 on a keto diet, which I’m starting to back away from). My GP has refused to prescribe metformin. Maybe I can get my cardiologist to prescribe it as an alternative to statins. I’ll probably have to bring in some proof that it has been shown to reduce LDL-C. In the meantime, I’ve ordered berberine.

  • Drs: What other supplements, that work synergistic with berberine, might assist with lowering cholesterol and weight loss? Interesting subject, and I enjoyed learning more. I have a silly request though. It is slightly annoying when you guys drum on the table while you are speaking. Very distracting, especially when listening with headphones. Thanks guys.

  • Are you concerned that recent studies seem to show that initially anyway, Metformin lowers blood levels of testosterone. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/11156121_Effects_of_short_term_metformin_administration_on_androgens_in_normal_men?fbclid=IwAR3YrFwj73k2LVcM1p8qhcjrRm_xp3oPA3fnyFRlNHag6ZWQ63OM78kSIQk

  • Berberine had an interesting effect on me: it caused a spike in my resting heart rate (resting at 90, usually 68) and insomnia. It also increased my TSH and Free T3 (very odd as they are inversely related). I am already on thyroid medication. I loved the energy on it, but I figured sleep is way more valuable. I’ve scoured the web for studies and can’t find anything. Can someone please shed light on what might be causing this? Ideally I’d love to go back to taking it for the positive effects, but don’t want to jeopardize sleep or thyroid function.

  • Drinking a lot of water, a whole lot can evacuate sugar from the blood when urinating. When a diabetic doesn’t drink a lot of water the sugar circulates without being used causing organ damage. Which leads to slow death usually.

  • I am on KD and LC and berberine help with the blood sugar shooting after a carb cheating (or carb refeed) and suppressed the craving. I easily lose 2% body fat within a week. However the berberine is very slow to see the benefit from it, I need to take it up to two week to noticed the effect on my body and mood. Also it does help to cure the SIBO.

  • Appreciate this information. I’m wondering how it compares to taking Chromium. Also wondering if it affects gluconeogenesis on carnivore.

  • I recently started taking it. How much and how often does he recommend taking it? I’ve been taking 1 500mg pill (seems to be standard dosing) with my biggest meal in the evening.

  • I took 500mg of metformin on non training days with my evening meal I had no issue on the first week but on the second week started to have increased heart rate also I have noticed my sleep was better on the first Week. I’m in my 40s and I’m taking it for ant ageing I like your channel

  • Bro, metformin inhibts on one hand liver gluconeog. (which is good for anabolism) But EXPERTS CLAIMS THAT ON THE OTHER HAND IS NO GOOD FOR INTENSE EXERCISE ONCE INHIBTS MTOR (WHICH IS DIRECTILY CORRELATED TO MUSCLE GAIN) I AM LOST BRO? CAN U EXPLAIN PLS!

  • You are doing a great public service with these videos.:) I tried berberine a couple of years ago and I couldn’t digest it. I was unwell for days. I agree that the research around Metformin is solid; and my blood sugar is already a bit high so I’d be a good candidate.

  • Great content. I was doing my own research and found recently there had been a recall for Metformin due to high levels of NDMA which causes cancer.

  • Thank you Mike! This is so timely given the big story on the reversal of aging using Metformin. I am taking it to protect my brain since I have 1 APOE4 gene variant and to look good for a few more decades. Haha! Here’s a comparison link for those who are interested.

  • You talk about Telomeres as an important aging phenomena… Most of the research I have seen seems to indicate that their length really doesn’t come into play in a significant way until much later in life, say age 80 or over. (and the fraying doesn’t start until they get below 2000 TTAGGG repeats, and the recent (2018-2019) shelterin protein encasing telomeres research (some of which came from the University of Washington) is fascinating!)
However, interfering with the body in a way that tricks it into thinking it is calorie reduced… has a couple side effects you didn’t mention. First, in a 2016 era paper we see that hydrogen sulphide production goes up when the body sees caloric restriction (interestingly caloric restriction reactions aren’t really triggered by the number of calories, they are triggered by the restriction of cystine and methionine), but lets go back to hydrogen sulphide…)
Hydrogen sulphide appears to be a powerful signaling molecule for triggering the apoptosis of senescent cells. (Witness the fact that we know the anti senescent cell drug being tested by Nathaniel David at Unity has a high percentage of hydrogen sulphide in it) And the routine killing of senescent cells in mice shows as high as a %36 boost in longevity in mice.
I’m going to argue that this is more important than the telomere argument that you made.

  • Hey Mike, thanks for the berberine content. Have been wondering about using that for a long while after hearing about some risks regarding it. Do you think a person should take berberine if they were a T2D but no longer are(a1c-5.1 for 2 years now)…… and are eating carnivoreany need or benefit? Also, another question regarding your glucose monitor? I’ve been curious to know when my real true bg peak is when eating omad. I don’t have a cont bg mon but would like to know when to test to find my bg peak. I know the norm is 1/2 to 1 hr after a meal, but when you are doing different time frames/windows of omad(anywhere from 1-3 hrs) I’m presuming that peak might be different when you’re eating in a much longer window than the standard that a lot of people eat15-30 min. I usually start with a protein by itself like sardines or a lc salad or sometimes a mix…..or sometimes carnivore for the day Never higher carb foods like berries, nuts etc. first. I have been testing an hr after the end of a 3 hr eating window to find out how different foods/meals are effecting my bg, but not sure if that is my true “peak”. Any thoughts based on yours or Deanna’s experience when that peak might be happening?

  • You mention ” antibacterial ” but you might add, or change that term or thought to “anti parasitic” as it is antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and works against larger entities.

  • Hi Mike, I just watched the Mercola interview of Dr. Sinclair, and just posted a question about Metformin vs Berberine. Then I I saw your video next addressing Berberine. Dr. Sinclair mentioned taking Metformin daily as a preventative measure since diabetes runs in his family. Lots of reviews on amazon are posted by people stopping Metformin and going on Berberine with same results and feeling no side effects they were feeling on Metformin.

  • Does the effects of berberine last? Like if it fixes the glucose metabolism and the insulin resistance or treats it… does it actually have a lasting effect to those things that were messed up in the first place?

  • Hey Mike! Just wanted to share with the team. Just finished the new podcast with Dr. Attia and Dr David Sinclair on How cellular reprogramming could slow our aging clock. They discuss the use of Metformin in the last hour of the podcast. My interpretation is don’t use Metformin when you are working out hard but take it when you are not working out to get the greatest benefit. Cyclical dosage. I am wondering if the same is true of Berberine?

  • OMG..this was I think a life changing video let me explain..I watched this video almost two weeks ago..I’ve been on keto for 3.5 years and started doing a OMAD with IF about a year ago..lost about 100 lbs in the first year and lots of other benefits including diminished loose skin that I attribute to autophagy..all that said I’ve become some what a fanatic about loosing the last 20 lbs of fat specially in the love handle areas but was loosing hope that unless I become a gym rat / track star this would never happen I’ve also been tracking my Glucose and Ketones for about a year now..my normal Glucose #’s are about 95 102 in the morning and 82 -87 pre meal My ketones run around 0.7 to 1.3..they go down quite a bit during prolong fasting 24 to 48 hours water only Glucose #s 72 80 and ketones in the 3.5 to 5.0 range and all go back up within 2 hours of breaking the fast..now here is the OMG thing I’ve started taking Berberine last week first two days 600mg ( one capsule )in the morning then added another 600 mg before the evening meal..with in 4 days my #’s have dropped what I would say dramatically Glucose are now 70 78 and Ketones are 2.5 to 4.5 during my OMAD 22 hour fast this is amazing and I have yet to see what happens during a pro long fast but will know tomorrow as I’n on hour 22 of what should be a 48 hour fast BTW I just did my #’s and 70 glucose and 4.4 ketones.. I am hopping this will help increase fat loss..Thanks Mike..

  • Curious what your thoughts are on timing Berberine/exogenous ketones in a person who is looking to achieve therapeutic ketosis and is on mandatory steroids.
Any theories bouncing around in your head on that?

  • I’m a type 2 diabetic who has been taking Berberine 500mg three times a
day for a month..and my blood glucose has not dropped at all..despite
also eating a low-carb diet and exercising. Once again..what is claimed
in a YouTube video and what happens in the real world are two different
    things.

  • I clicked on this video because I am very interested in the antibacterial qualities of berberine. I suffer from distended bladder and require self catherization 4 times daily. Due to this, my UTI risk is greater. My urine is very alkaline at the moment and recently tested positive for citrobacter freundii bacteria in my bladder. From the information I’ve gathered so far, berberine helps keep harmful bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls and ureters. Your information was very insightful in explaining many of the health benefits of this amazing alkaloid, so thank you. I wish you and others good health.

  • Thank you. I’m not taking either Berberine or Metformin. Metformin’s blunting effect on the beneficial effects of exercise bothers me. This video by Dr. Rhonda Patrick concludes that exercise is better than metformin at delaying aging and preventing type II diabetes, and further that metformin and exercise are NOT synergistic in fact metformin can seriously reduce the benefits of some exercise. https://youtu.be/2Bsk7qZ8888 Still, she concludes that if you cannot exercise, taking metformin is beneficial.

  • What a interesting YouTube podcast the information in this YouTube video opened my mind and I want to buy bererine and try it out I saw some on the vitamin Shoppe website

  • I have a question Mike. You mentioned that you do/did not think one should take Berberine on a regular basis. WHY. I AM 73 yrs been on keto 2 yrs + and i tried Berberine 500mg and noticed a difference in glucose and alertness and just felt better, but just don’t know how to use it long term. Please help

  • Hello, when one loses weight/fat is visceral fat lost first? I have learned that the pancreas no longer works optimally due to the fat in and around the organ. Is it really possible to re-boot the pancreas by getting rid of the visceral fat?! I am type II and want to reverse my condition!

  • Some fantastic information again Dr Brad. I’ve been taking Berberine for some time but have recently convinced my doctor to prescribe Metformin. Your summary and comments about bioavailability were compelling.

  • I have been taking berberine for about a year now. I don’t believe there is any doctor in the US that will prescribe the other drug Metformin unless you have an actual health condition. Telling them you want to live longer and believe that that drug will help will not convince a doctor bro prescribe it for you and risk his career if you develop negative side effects. But thanks for the info.

  • Dr Attia, you are a rockstar, thank you and the interviewer . This, gold nugget, information saved me hours of searching google , thanks again!

  • Watch RX muscle with dave palumbo on metformin. I’m a heavyweight npc competitor. I was on metformin for a year. It actually constricts blood vessels not allowing nutrients and amino acids into the muscles thus hurting your gains. Ibuprofen does the same thing.

  • Metformin gives you diarrhea (at first), and ironically, Berberine is sold to prevent diarrhea (in Asia at least). Maybe taking both is the solution!

  • What’s your view on it blocking the effects of exercise? Moreover, it’s affects can last for several days. Basically, if I plan to go jogging, I don’t take Metformin for 3 days prior, otherwise the exercise may be more or less ineffective, right?

  • What you said about talking to your medical professional before any action is taken, what If he told me to stop watching channels on YouTube because it’s confusing me and affecting the diet they want me to eat what. would 1 do

  • Hey Dan. Thanks a lot for all the info. Any words on whether metformin hinders muscle recovery for natural lifters though? Cheers.

  • For a non diabetic, but a person with IR metabolic syndrome (PCOS), do you think it would be safe to take berberine while fasting and/or on a very low calorie ketogenic diet?

  • Thank you Naomi for this factual video. The only problem I have with this protocol is the expense. If I were to take 500mg. 3x a day it would cost me approx. $60.00 @ month which I could not afford at this time. Aside from that I think it’s a wonderful supplement.

  • I clicked on this video because I am very interested in the antibacterial qualities of berberine. I suffer from distended bladder and require self catherization 4 times daily. • hes right my urine smells heavy like i am peeing protein or am dehydrated (i am not) and its dark not straw colored anymore bowel movements are a quick flush then perhaps 2 more b4 you get off the toilet. fan ON. lol my intestinal discomfort went away after 5 weeks. it’s good stuff guys.

  • I took berberine (along with some other stuff) for a Camplyobacter infection. Infection went away without taking any antibiotics. Wasn’t paying attention to what it was doing to my blood glucose levels.

  • Good day Doc, you have touched on the topic of NAFLD, however would you be able to advise on the potential treatment and diet of NAFLD & Insulin Resistance. Thanks in advance

  • Good video. One correction or insight. High saturated fat levels cause buildup of intramyocelluar lipids (fats that block insulin receptors). Hence someone who it’s a lot of fat and sugars like fast foodgets insulin resistance the fastest. If they were keto and then eat a bunch carbs along with the fat it’s the same effect. One can eat a very high carb diet low fat and not cause insulin sensitivity because the receptors continue to work well. In sum, it’s a combination effect of fat and carbohydrates. You can eat only oil-free potatoes for a month and cure diabetes.

  • Hello, Thanks for video. i am taking Berberine + Coconut oil + Milk Thistle, hope this increase bio availability and good for Liver.
and sorry my English not very well i don’t get, in training days Metformin or Berberine is bad?

  • Wow, I was JUST going to research this myself today.:-)

    CURRENT STACK (49 years old):
    K2 (MK-7)
D3 (when not getting enough sunlight only)
    Low dose Aspirin
    Trans-resveratrol
    Sulphoraphane
    Fish Oil
High Quality Olive Oil (oleic acid) used to take vitamins

  • Where do metformin trees grow? Has this knucklehead ever looked at the adverse effects of metformin on normal body physiology. In scientific terms an adverse affect is known as a toxin. Something like a side effect except there is no such thing as a side effect, there are only effects.

  • if you are a proff. bodybuilder all these drugs makes sense, if you are a recreational bodybuilder as Dan or me or you, its just plain STUPID, to gamble with you life doing drugs like these, just for looks, ting tong!!

  • I first heard about Berberine on a commercial, by a famous plastic surgeon in Bev Hills. Now, seems everyone’s talking about it! Guess the secrets out, Lol. Love your informative videos! Ty!!

  • Most people take Metformin for Diabetes Blood sugar control, not lifespan… take it on an empty stomach or not and then shit your pants:) Good stuff

  • If some of you all’s main objection to metformin is loose stool, ask your PCP to change your prescription to metformin ER (extended release). It releases the active drug more slowly and over a longer period of time which is less stressful on your digestive system. Cost is similar (perhaps less) and sometimes you take fewer doses per day depending on the severity of your diabetes. Helped me since I exercise and jogging/running/sprinting tends to act like a laxative when taking regular metformin and I would have to often cut my workouts short and so when I switched I barely noticed I was taking it other than improved blood glucose numbers. I take my pill before I go to sleep since I have little or no control of my blood glucose level while sleeping and to partially counter “dawn effect”.

  • What I can’t understand is why the use of DHB in supplements is still so obscure and not picked up by the major quality names (i.e. Now Foods, Thorne, etc.) and why they’re still using plain berberine. Is it because of cost?

  • Like most of the comments below, a truly informative video. Many thanks. Just one question, when you were talking dosages you initially mentioned that ‘you personally’ were taking around 1000mg p/day, [ 29:05min] then you discussed, [ 33:10min] that diabetics usually get prescribed between 1500-2500mg p/day. However you then go on to say that you think the ‘effective dosage is somewhere around 1000-2000mg ‘per week’?…. Did you mean to say per week or per day like you mentioned at the [ 29:05min] mark?
Clarification on this point would be much appreciated.
    Regards.

  • Subscribed!

I did experiment with it 10 years back. Keeping all other variables constant, I experienced awesome pumps, but my hunger got out of hand, my strength was unbelievable which makes sense ‘cause I’m always depleted and I guess it drove the few carbs to the muscles effectiveley BUT by the fourth week I was gaining a lot of fat around my waist AND I couldn’t endure the constipation, which ultimately made me quit.
It was strange because it’s not supposed to do that, specially taking into account that as I said I kept everything constant and of course I wasn’t gaining fat around my waist before.
One final note, my joints felt great and strong while on it.

  • I have always had a very strong heart. Some years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes and put on Metformin. Now I have a heart murmur indicating a need for surgery. The Dr. denies that there is a connection. I disagree. In my research of this subject I have found out about berberin. Anyone know where to find it? Our local health food store has a very limited supply of alternative supplements.

  • Glucose or any carbohydrate doesn’t cause insulin resistance. Fat causes insulin resistance. Bro Science will kill not just you but others too!

  • So i would assume if i was planning to do a fasted workout in the morning it wouldn’t be recommended nor optimal to take berberine prior to given i am a healthy individual looking to build muscle

  • Some fantastic information again Dr Brad. I’ve been taking Berberine for some time but have recently convinced my doctor to prescribe Metformin. Your summary and comments about bioavailability were compelling.

  • Research on the internet is also filled full of truth if you know what you are doing.. Don’t discount the information available on the internet..

  • I’m taking metformin 1gr a day. Here in Serbia in Eastern Europe, a month supply of metformin is 1.3 USD and we don’t need to have doctor prescription.

  • Love it! thanks for posting this Mike! Also…. perfect timing from our chat yesterday ;D I need to figure out how you do research and absorb all this stuff some day. I feel like I only retain so much. I do miss biochem <3

  • You two are a joy to watch you chemistry is like nothing I’ve ever seen like you were born twins or something beautiful respect & for each others thought! Good stuff!

  • Swaddee Krap:) I too lived in Thailand many years, now back in the states, I need to recover a little from all that Beer Chang and the wonderful cooking. I am 100 Pounds overweight, I used to Joke about the Gestation period of a Chang (Elephant) but a joke no longer, that baby is BIG, so anyway, I watched your video today and found with some interest what you said about Metformin adding receptors to the cells for glucose, I put myself on Metforman about a month ago in hopes it will help with weight loss and life extension. Anyway, back to the point, these receptors, how long does it take for Metforman to do this? A mater of within the first dose or does it take some months for this to become effective? And another question and the original reason I looked up your Video, do U recommend Metforman every day or do U treat workout days differently then relax days? And finally, can you buy Metforman over the counter in Thailand or must you see a Dr first as in the states?

  • Great information!! Can you go a little more into detail about metformin and a ketogenic diet combination? What should you expect, how does it effect the body? Also, how much is too much? Can someone overdose on metformin? Thank you!!

  • Please be careful with Metformin guys. What nobody tells you is that Metformin blocks your body’s ability to use vitamin B12..which over time eventually leads to memory loss..fuzzy thinking..panic attacks..and may even go all the way to dementia or worst. Also may give you Neuropathy..as B12 is crucial for nerve health. I know all of this because I just stopped taking Metformin after 8 years of use due to being a type 2 diabetic and it making me suffer the side effects I mentioned. Had I know this would happen I would have never used it in the first place..but since it greatly helped lower my blood sugar and all I read were good things about it I had no idea it had these awful side effects which develop over time. I’m now slowly trying to rebuild my memory and thinking through B12 supplements and trying to reverse my neuropathy..but it’s a huge struggle. Just avoid this medication..it’s not worth it guys.

  • Interesting; I just started Berberine a week ago. I also switched up my IF schedule to 20hrs/day. I take 500mg before my meal and am loosing again for 1st time in over a year. I had given up on loosing the last 30lbs but got berberine to see if it helped my after meal fatigue. I am still not sure if it helps with that though. I have never been diabetic or pre-diabetic but I feel I have insulin resistance.

  • If your doctor doesn’t want to give you metformin despite your efforts to discuss the anti aging effects, then that doctor is not up to date and its time to FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR.

  • I first heard about Berberine on a commercial, by a famous plastic surgeon in Bev Hills. Now, seems everyone’s talking about it! Guess the secrets out, Lol. Love your informative videos! Ty!!

  • Great information. I’m a T2 diabetic and just recently started metformin. This video has given me more info on how metformin works than any of the 40 videos I’ve watched. I’ve watched this video about 3 times to make sure I got all the information. Thanks!!

  • Thank you for this amazing information, actually I have never heard about it. But after knowing that, I will definitely look for it. Thank you again for your time and support.

  • Brad, if you were not a Dr. with easy access to Metformin would you be taking Berberine instead, even with the limited data presently on Berberine?

  • I have just pulled up several articles one being from NCBI.NLM.NIH.gov that Berberine is a promising candidate in preventing and treating NAFLD.

  • Breaking News: Metformin might be linked to cancer https://www.ibtimes.com/diabetes-drug-recall-2020-more-metformin-medication-recalled-cancer-causing-2992814

  • Get in a caloric deficit, track macros, lose fat and boom blood sugar stabilizes! No biohacks no need for additional pills or ketone fairy dust…this isn’t hard

  • Since metformin just mimics the effects of calorie restriction and intermittent fasting and long term fasting, I’m just going to stick to long term fasting, and intermittent fasting with calorie restriction on a ketogenic diet.

  • Great content. I was doing my own research and found recently there had been a recall for Metformin due to high levels of NDMA which causes cancer.

  • I just started taking Thorne’s Berberine HCL-500 mg. I’m a pretty healthy person but I have always dealt with strong sugar cravings. As soon as I began taking berberine, I noticed a significant decrease in appetite and sugar cravings. My energy is coming back and I feel better overall. I would NOT recommend taking it on an empty stomach, it caused MAJOR GI issues for me. Love the video!

  • I’m taking metformin 1gr a day. Here in Serbia in Eastern Europe, a month supply of metformin is 1.3 USD and we don’t need to have doctor prescription.

  • I took 500mg of metformin on non training days with my evening meal I had no issue on the first week but on the second week started to have increased heart rate also I have noticed my sleep was better on the first Week. I’m in my 40s and I’m taking it for ant ageing I like your channel

  • Love your insightful and erudite videos, Mike. Berberine appears to have great potential, however, please consider berberine, like Metformin, reduces oxygen-dependent glucose oxidation through inhibition of the respirator mitochondrial complex I (1). That may be an important caveat for folks with heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc. And there is the “Metformin inhibits mitochondrial adaptations to aerobic exercise training in older adults” (2) study to consider as a possible similar outcome with berberine. Cheers and thanks.

  • After looking into Berberine, one of the effects that captured my attention, was that it’s shown to lower testosterone. What are your thoughts on this?
It has a lot of benefits, but honestly this would be a deal breaker for me. Thank you for your time and presentation. Cheers!

  • Awesome video Mike. As always.

In Chinese Medicine we call the herb Huang Lian. Of course we can’t see blood sugar irregularities in chinese medicine, but the herb is used to clear dampness and heat from specific parts of the body which would indicate different aspects of metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes.

Thanks for always making great content.

  • Definitely trying Berbertine suffering with hypothyroidism doctors don’t have a clue why I can’t lose weight. I have to help myself it seems money rules the world for alot of doctor’s.

  • great video! like many here I read Dr. Sinclair’s book and try to follow his regiment. I also had some difficulty acquiring metformin in the US and though this is not practical for most, if you live close to the Mexican border or have a friend there, its available OTC for cheap

  • Good day Doc, you have touched on the topic of NAFLD, however would you be able to advise on the potential treatment and diet of NAFLD & Insulin Resistance. Thanks in advance

  • Do a video on adaptogenic herbs like KSM 66 ashwagandha I was always wondering if these curves are supposed to balance your hormones if you took them on steroids would it lower your testosterone trying to get it in a normal range

  • Naomi, for those who’ve complained about berberine making them sick, have you tried or recommended dihydroberberine? Hard to find but much better in digestion.

  • What’s your view on it blocking the effects of exercise? Moreover, it’s affects can last for several days. Basically, if I plan to go jogging, I don’t take Metformin for 3 days prior, otherwise the exercise may be more or less ineffective, right?

  • I heard Lee Priest saying that he used to eat a Snickers immediately after training to affect his insulin. Can you explain this a bit more please?

  • I took Berberine and suffered the most horrific gut pain. I stopped the product and months later tried again hoping it was just a bug I had and it was nothing but three days of excruciating pain again. I think everyone who suffers stomach issues should be very very cautious or avoid berberine
    all together.

  • Around the 16th min you guys mentioned that you can take both metformin and bererine. Would this be taken separate or same time of the day? Thank you for bringing this content to view greatly appreciated.

  • Is it normal to have some nausea while taking berberine? I have been taking it for 2 weeks, and have an overall aversion to food. Perhaps dosage is too high?

  • “Metformin is far more effective for body building than Berberine.” Finally. That’s what I needed. 1000mg 2000mg per week is good you say I think you mean per DAY. Daily dosage.

  • There’s a lot of this that I don’t fully understand but it does kinda make sense to my non-scientific brain so this was good to watch. I’m still not sure that I fully understand why Metformin is good for body-building but the general hypothesis makes sense to me.
Just a couple of things to mention though about Metformin (as a Type 2 diabetic who’s been using it for 2 years now) that I think are useful for anyone considering using Metformin (for whatever purpose):
1/ I’ve had NO problems with smelly faeces, urine or breath. I’m in New Zealand so maybe what we have available here differs from other countries. As far as I’m aware, those problems typically only seem to happen with Fast Release versions of metformin which even smell fishy in the bottle. Switching to a slow release version will resolve this issue.
2/ Similarly, I’ve had no gastrointestinal issues not even during the initial start of the course and I was on a high dosage of 3000 mg / day. In fact one of the side-effects I was warned about was the complete opposite: that I might become constipated and that in that instance, I was simply to reduce the dosage to 2000 or 2500 mg / day and the effects would subside immediately.
3/ another side-effect that’s important to mention: over 2500 mg a day can start to cause sleepiness. As I say, I was on 3000 mg / day as part of an aggressive medication regime to try to reset my liver and kidney function and avoid the need for insulin this was for 3 months (along with other medication) it worked but the Dr forgot to tell me to cut back on the Metformin after about month 8 or 9 I started to notice that I felt like I was hitting the wall all the time. My symptoms were similar to adrenal fatigue. Cutting back the dosage worked really quickly I started to notice a return to normal after about 4 or 5 days certainly after a week the problem was gone completely.

My diabetes management has focused on metformin and diet. Apparently exercise can be up to 3 times more effective than Metformin but I’ve struggled to fit exercise into my routine (used to be a big gym-goer 3-5 times a week mainly weights and MMA but it it’s taken the last 1 1/2 years to balanced my diet so that I can maintain energy levels). Plus the work-life balance challenge I’ve just kissed good-bye to corporate world so it’s perfect timing to see your vid because it’s given me the boost in motivation to get back into it tomorrow morning. So while I know that your intent was to explain how metformin can help body-builders, I just want to say thank you for posting this video as it’s given me that positive encouragement to get back to the gym which will really help my diabetes management. Otherwise I’d probably have pro-longed for another couple of weeks:)

Thank you

  • Big love from NYC Mike! Love this post and thank you for introducing me to berberine last year! I’d like to also mention that berebine can eradicate h.pylori (no antibiotics needed)! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5556219/

  • Definitely try primalog, reviews like this are pretty dope, everyone and their mother review pres and protein powders, its nice to see a review on more of an advanced supplement

  • does berberine affect glycogen levels? say for example i want to use it during my bulk and because im eating 500grams of carbs a day would it affect carb uptake for glycogen?
i have used 1000 mg a day now for 2 weeks and look flatter than normal and a lot leaner aswell
    thank in advanced

  • Thanks for starting this series, Mike! I am definitely with you on controlling glucose level in the blood without having to take carbs and protein grams too low.
