More than 1/3 of responders did not know the difference between someone who is a registered dietitian, RD (or registered dietitian/nutritionist, RDN — both titles can be used by dietitians), and someone who calls themselves a nutritionist or one of the many sub-categories: holistic nutritionist, certified nutritionist, health coach, nutrition expert, nutrition coach, integrative nutritionist, etc. To earn the credentials of Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), a person needs to complete the criteria set forth by governing bodies like the Academy of Nutrition. A registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) they’re the same thing is a specialist who’s trained to help you figure out a plan for all those things.

What Does an. A: In short, there’s no difference between a registered dietitian (RD) and a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN), but, as you’ll see below, a “nutritionist” is not a simple or straightforward designation. The RD credential has been in use since 1970.

Dietitians can sport the title Registered Dietitian (RD) or the more recent Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). They can be used interchangeably. To earn these credentials you must have a bachelor’s degree in science, but beginning in 2024, you’ll need a master’s degree.

Registered dietitians and certified clinical nutritionists often practice in different areas. Registered dietitians often work in hospitals or other institutions such as schools, planning meals that meet the nutritional needs of the populations they serve. Senior Culinary Nutritionist Andrea Canada explains the credentials granted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recently announced that registered dietitians (R.D.), now have the option to use “Registered Dietitian Nutritionist”, or R.D.N., as their credential. If you’ve ever sought out the help of a nutritionist, you may also have seen the.

Ask the Dietitian® has been online since July 1995 providing research based nutrition advice for consumers. Registered dietitian nutritionists — RDNs — are the food and nutrition experts who can translate the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living. RDNs use their nutrition expertise to help individuals make unique, positive lifestyle changes. They work throughout the community in hospitals, schools, public health clinics, nursing homes, fitness centers, food management.

March is National Nutrition Month! There are so many different health and nutrition related practitioners. At Evolution Nutrition, we are all Registered Dietitians (RD).

But what’s the difference between an RD and a nutritionist? It can be hard to know who to look to for.

  • The “evidence based practice” can be skewed (Big corporations work hand & hand with the government to have their privatized studies pushed to the forefront). That’s why Americans are in an obesity pandemic.

  • What happens to the registered dietitians that do not back up their statements with science? Like the ones recommending veganism and telling people that meat is bad.

  • There is a very overweight certified nutritionist selling a 21 day plan for insulin resistance who used to be a beachbody coach, and she was actually at a healthy weight when she was using beachbody and drinking shakeology.

  • I don’t trust RDs anymore. RDs have to toe the line of the academy of foods and nutrition which receives money from Coca Cola,Wendy’s, etc. RDs knowledge is outdated. RDs have to follow government guidelines which was corrupted by the food industry. RDs got me obsessed about the number in the scale and calories in vs calories out which backfires. RDs still think that eating fat is bad but they are ok with eating sugar and carbs. They are ok with eating 6 times a day to “control hunger “and “maintain metabolism” but the reality is the opposite. it’s sad that the RD is used and salesman for the processed food industry.

  • I get SO frustrated trying to learn about nutrition that is actually backed by science. Now I know the credentials to look for if I want to avoid the pseudoscience “woo” out there with outrageous claims lol. My husband suffers from chronic illness and I’m sure you already know EVERYONE seems to have an unproven magic cure to sell. �� I don’t want magic promises about food, or crazy fad diets, just solid facts that help me make the best nutritional choices for us.   • I used to be a skinny model and I was able to eat as much as I want.
    There was a medical accident and my body system was damaged very very bad.
    I don’t have fast metabolism anymore at least for years more.
    I was always in a good shape whatever I eat but now it’s not. so,
    Especially my belly fat and gut fat is dangerous level although I eat less than before so it
    means my body type is changed (slow metabolism, slow digest, like elder or people who originally had very slow metabolism). Also, I can exercise limited amount only.(walk and stretching. maybe muscle exercise not hard for short as possible.). I eat 14times a day so it was it was irregular. If I don’t eat carb, sort, sugar a lot(like chinese food or korean) I feel down but I regret every time after eat a lot as digestion is slow. But I started to change from today. My weight is always 13kg above compared before the accident. My stomach nerve was damaged too so
    it’s slow and always out. But when I eat less for long, it goes back in quite a bit.

    I just wonder what kind of eating style would be good for me and how often too..
    If it is and opinion, I would appreciate.

  • I´m really confuse, I just start studying Nutrition (Lic. Ciencias Nutricionales) in Mexico, this career It´s 4 years degree + a year of practice, when I get graduated I´m going to be a nutritionist but basically, I will be doing a dietitians work, so I will be a Rdn at the USA or Canada? I´m so confuse with the names and what they do. can somebody help me?

  • I’m 287 and am averaging losing 3-5 lbs a month. I’m working out with a trainer 5 days a week (virtually for now). I get one really kick-ass sweat dripping in my eyes workout per week and am too sore the rest of the week to kick it into that gear again although I still do the workouts. In addition to daily 1-2 mile walks. Something in my brain and muscles clicked this week for the first time and I felt my abs take the brunt of the workout rather than my thighs and shoulders, and all of a sudden my squats and deadlifts burn in my glutes which they didn’t at all before. In a month I’ve gained massive range of motion in my hips and much more flexibility which is making it easier. But the soreness is intense, I’m assuming that means I need better nutrition?
    I’m eating 1500 1700 calories a day. I’m fighting my sugar addiction ( chocolate) but still allow myself a little something (like a pudding cup) here and there. I am pretty carb heavy though. I’ve been told I can still have some carbs but they should be things like Ezekiel bread, not regular English muffins. I eat a lot of vegetables, no red meat (it hurts my stomach), lots of chicken. Does anyone have any thoughts?

  • Hey my name is Alex I’m 17 and my goal is to become a professional MMA fighter & I’ve recently seen that a lot of pro MMA fighter/boxers Needing to weight cut to get to a certain weight class,Therefor many professional fighters work with this nutritionist expert named George lockhart and after seeing him work and the way he talks about food and essentials that our body needs it had got me intrigued but I don’t know exactly how to study that or what exactly is the requirements to get in that profession or even what that job is called exactly.

  • In México you have to study 4 years to become a Nutritionist (In my collegue I had 4 years and a half) and then 1 year of social service or intership in a hospital �� and a Dietitian is someone who has a tecnic career of one or two years.

  • Here in the Netherlands there’s an association for nutritionists, and you can only be part of that with a degree/certificate. Therefore people looking for a nutritionist know who’s legit and who’s not because of the online database which is accessible for everyone. Keeps the scammers away ��

  • The difference is simple nothing hard about it Nutritionists who have gone to university are highly valued the nutrition part of it just like dieticians just not the medical part of nutrition. Up to you dieticians are poorly paid and yet spend all that time in placements so yes nutritionist with a degree you are fine if you dont want the hassle of unpaid placemebts and 5 years in college for low pay.

  • Thankfully in most of the provinces in Canada calling yourself a nutritionist means that not just anyone can call themselves that. You need to attend an accredited post secondary college or vocational school, take an exam and do regular upgrading. Most schools offer this course with a diploma or certificate at the end.

  • In some provinces of Canada like Quebec, the word Dietetician AND Nutritionnist are protected by the law. So they mean the same because they did the same education (a 4 years degree + 40 weeks of internship).

  • Nutrition and dietician degrees are not offered where I live. I live In El Paso TX. The closest to those degrees are an associates in nutrition a nd bachelor’s in public health. My interest in nutrition has grown lately.

  • Such an important distinction. Another thing that pops up on the internet as well is people who advertise the fact that they are a doctor to help further their nutrition advice platform but when you look deeper it turns out they studied something unrelated like chiropractics. It’s so important to check these things out before you launch yourself into someones dietary advice!!!

  • I am a Clinical Nutritionist in Trinidad and Tobago. I have my MSc in Medical Nutrition. In my country we are required to complete 2 Practicums for our BSc and register with a board. I find it severely annoying that often registered Nutritionists are degregated to not being as qualified as RDs. We do all the same courses are taught the same information, do all the same clinicals etc just some of us prefer choosing Practicums over clinical internships because we desire to work more on the field of foodservice, gastroenterology and not be institutionalized to figures. I run my practice and update my programs based in evidence based research, I work with medical doctors for my patients. RDs are not more or differently qualified that Registered Nutritionists. But to me we actually have a greater understanding of food science and functional patient consumption than just the statistical, charted, structured style of Dietitics. To me that approach manages chronic nutritional diseases more than cure or prevent and I think Real Nutritionists need to be more vocal generally of our role and function.

  • Wow, I find your definitions quite different from us in Africa.Personally am a registered clinical nutritionist in Kenya.I have gone through degree course in Nutrition accompanied by attachment ant internship in hospital set up upon which I got registered by the Kenya Nutritionists and Dietitian Institute.My scope of work has much to do with patients in the hospital.I think the bottom line here should be that ‘Is the person competent and qualified to work in the given area?’ and not really bringing out the superiority issue of which one seems stronger than the other between nutritionist and dietitian.My opinion though.

  • Hi Lauren, You may not be familiar with the many nutritionists who have Masters or doctoral degrees in nutrition or in a clinical healthcare field (covering all the biochemistry and life sciences) with additional coursework in nutrition, complete a supervised practice/internship and pass a national board certifying exam. The Certified Nutriton Specialist (CNS) is one such credential.. Looks from the comments that you received similar information a year ago. I hope you can update the information you are passing on about the profession. Thank you.

  • That is not true in all states, in some states you can work in hospital if you are Certified Nutritionalist Specialist education and clinical hours requirements are the similar to RDs except you have to have Masters or PhD which I think why RDs are changing their requirements as well

  • This is not accurate information. It really depends on what State you live in. In the state of Washington for example, the state licenses CN Certified Nutritionists, and CD Certified Dietitians. To be a CN you need a masters of phd in nutrition. to be a CD you need to be an RD. Both can practice MNT (Medical Nutrition Therapy) and work in hospital settings, bill insurance, etc. Please update your information because you give nutrtitionists that are licensed and have Masters and PHD a bad name. In Minnesota, you can become a CN with a PHD in nutrition. There are Non RD routes to practicing Medical Nutrition Therapy.

  • I beg to differ about animal protein and oils. Like you said, the information is out there and I have seen a lot of it. I believe in the ketogenic diet and I also believe that a plant-based diet is good as well. It is all in what you choose and how food is prepared.

  • I would rather be a Nutritionist (I am sure there is a difference between them and dieticians) and I can only do an online degree and the AND site did not give me the information I am looking for. Do they have to be the ultimate source of what schools I can attend that will be recognized as accredited enough to be recognized for me to be able to take a registration exam?   • You imply in this video that the vegetarian/vegan myth is not mainstream, but it seems to me it is. The recommended diet still includes dairy and meat but limits it and prefers margarine over butter.

  • An easy way to explain the difference is simply this..

    A “Nutritionist” is a job title (such as human resources, or personal assistant), who ever signs your paycheck sets your requirements for required education. As stated, they can be PhD’s or high school aids..

    “Registered Dietitian” is a federally regulated credential, the same as a lawyer or pharmacist. There is a minimum level of education, experience, and testing that must be satisfied to meet this requirement.

  • I’m actually completing my bachelors in nutrition and dietetics and I do not want to be a RD, but I do want to become a CN. Because a.) the science classes are a personal struggle for me..like you have no idea lol b.) I do not want to work in the medical field or around it, c.) one thing they never tell you….the unpaid internship is NOT free. d.) I’m attending culinary school after I graduate with my bachelors because I want to become a personal chef and do cooking classes (I want to have my own business). yes i know being a RD will look “better” but they are other routes and being a CN, does require schooling and an exam…just not the internship. So I totally agree with all that you said…find whats best for you

  • This video is very misleading. First off becoming a RD is not the only certified credential someone can have. One difference, a very important one, you forgot to mention is the fact that becoming a RD is more geared toward the clinical aspect. That’s why they require u to work in a hospital for you internship. Yes there are more opportunities, like having a masters over just a bachelors, but it’s not the only way. Some jobs don’t require a RD license but will accept it. And to say in your video that animal products are bad and in the same video say people should become a RD is completely wrong. Dietitians will most likely tell me to eat a huge variety of foods and not vegan due to all the health risk tht comes with it. I am not someone just blabbering I am in school for nutrition and I work in a hospital. Telling people to stay away from animal products is your advice, not the advice from the dietetics organization

  • Yes, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, but there are licensed nutritionists as well. For instance, to become a licensed nutritionist, you have to take the same exam as a dietitian would.

  • Thank you so much for your information. Although, I’m disagreeing a little with you. Yes, credentials are good, and hopefully, a way to keep wackos from hurting us. However, when a person is PASSIONATE about helping people, in this case through nutrition, it can be done. I’m not doing anything with my knowledge right now, but I have been reading hundreds of books, and watching easily 20 videos by professors of ivy league colleges, among others, TED Talks, Khan Academy, RDs like yourself, other people so head actual experiences, with breaking themselves with nutrition, or losing weight through a healthier lifestyle, fir over FIVE years now. So, who’s to say, I don’t have similar, abd in some cases more experience than many do have a college degree, or a certificate, because in addition to all that, in 51, abd have gone through a lot in my life, including having the kids, the oldest being 27, and having several issues, and not only diagnosing myself accurately, but also, healing myself of thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, fibroids (it’s not fun being a woman at times… ��), plantar fasciitis which I didn’t even know what it was when I started my research, sin issues, liver and kidney issues, etc. In addition, I have helped my children with migraines headaches, skin issues, IBS, etc., All these conditions I have helped, by helping our own smarty body heal itself, with proper nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle. Even my friends call to ask for my opinion on things. Many times I also suggest for them to find a good chiropractor, or natural, holistic doctor. Whenever my friends look for a nutritionist, they end up doing exactly what I told them, what they may want to do.

    So, a person like me is a natural, and there are many people life me who have a passion for something, a gift, and it didn’t matter how many certificate one has, without passion for what you do, it means very little. Having both is best, I understand that, but remember that many medical doctors have a PhD, and yet they’re hurting their patients on a daily bays by prescribing poisonous drugs, or procedures.

    Yesterday I went to my doctor, and after a full panel blood work and other tests, I’m a very healthy person. Even my vitamin D was optimal, thyroid, enduring in top shape.

    So, who’s to say, a person life me cannot start find what David Avocado is doing, and doing it right? I know passion, and David is passionate about his gift

  • Love your video until the end, yes we need to have lively discussions about various nutrition theories, but they should be informed theories. Agriculture, which included eating more grains and more milk and animal products, actually helped contribute dramatically to survival, civilization, and the ability for humans to concentrate on things other than hunting and gathering such as writing, art, science, architecture, etc etc. Grains and milk and meat are not inherently bad for us, but can contribute to health when used wisely. i love your analogy about firefighters trained vs volunteers. Volunteers have skills, but they are limited by the lower foundation of knowledge they have. That doesn’t mean they aren’t useful, or talented, but I would sure want a trained firefighter supervising them. And I certainly wouldn’t want just anyone coming to fight my fire, and making a big dumb mistake of throwing water on a grease or chemical fire. Same thing with nutrition, I want someone who is going to know how to help MY issue, not how to promote their belief. I want an RD. But I’m likely biased, since I am an RD. I enjoy hearing what non-RDs have to say about nutrition, but after researching it myself I rarely end up doing what they suggest completely.

  • I don’t understand why there seems to be so much disagreement in the dietetics field.  Shouldn’t the nutritional advice given be based on the results of the latest scientific, peer-reviewed studies?  There is a scientific consensus gravity, climate change, evolution, etc., but no consensus on the best diet for human beings?  The politics in that field are terrible.

  • This has changed. An RD must obtain a Master’s degree and an internship with experience in the 4 prongs of dietetics, Management, Food Service, Clinical Public Health. The field is challenging and making money depends on the quality of your education and how well you do/perform on the job. Many Doctors have no idea of how much some of us know or can specialize in if need be.

  • I am becoming a Registered Nutritionist for the simple fact that to become a Registered Dietitian you have to pass their test which is theory is good until you look at who financially contributes to the National Dietetics Association. 

    Seems to me to be a conflict of interest when you have major corporations like Coke & Pepsi, General Mills and even the National Dairy Council contributing financially to your organization. ( http://www.eatrightpro.org/…/advertis…/meet-our-sponsors)

    I highly doubt that if a company is contributing millions to an organization that said organization would publicize how toxic their food is and to not eat/drink it.

  • Very helpful. Thank you.:) Just curious, what are your thoughts on online dietetics programs that meet the requirements to take the R.D. exam? I just graduated with a bachelors in Exercise Science, but after finding out how passionate I am in the field of nutrition I’m seriously considering going back to school to get my bachelor’s in Dietetics. I am a mother of one and there aren’t really any dietetic on campus programs (that I can afford) near me. Kansas State has an online Dietetics program that seems pretty legit. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • Well, I don’t know what you guys gonna say. I’m from India. I was pursuing BSc nutrition and dietetics and left it after completing half the course. You might think this is crazy,insane or whatever. But the truth is if you’re really really interested then only go for it. Getting good teachers is very important. My university didn’t have proper management. So I didn’t succeed. All I wanna say is the this is not suitable for everybody. Think twice

  • The major is called Dietetics? Have not seen that at schools here. You get a degree in nutrition then do the internship & test you were talking about to become a registered dietitian.

  • Do you feel getting this certification affects your emotional health? I mean, as an RD student, they are training you a conventional American diet of high protein.   • Really great video! I learnt a lot actually. But I wished you talked about what they teach as you become an RD… (To prepare some excited students who will be horrified when they hear some of the bull that is being taught in nutrition classes) I know some dietetics grads and they have been taught that milk is good for you and that CHEESE is healthy!! They seriously believe that… And they don’t believe casein causes cancer… Even though there are many studies out there. But don’t get me wrong, I’m ALL for vegans becoming RDs!! Promoting higher education is really important so thank you for this video!

  • Very informational video! I was considering for a little while to become a RD as well, but decided against it. I’d already studied at uni before and didn’t feel like going for another 4 years fulltime, and also the prospect of having to learn things I didn’t agree with all the time kind of bummed me out. Nevertheless, I am really happy there are vegans like yourself out there who are going for the RD title to make some big waves in the world!

  • I actually wanted to be a dietitian but my country doesn’t have this degree course yet. I would have to study abroad to be a dietitian. So I chose the food and human nutrition degree instead. But come to think about it, I would rather not be a dietitian. As you said, registered dietitians are required to go through clinical internship. That involves nutritional counseling. You would have to educate patients in accordance to the ‘healthy’ food pyramid (which involves eating meat) just to pass the internship. Ethically, it isn’t right, unless they give you a vegan patient which is highly unlikely…. 99% patients I see in hospitals ( I worked as an intern with dietitians before, but as a nutrition student) are non-vegans D: idk about your country though. Vegans are rare here in singapore but there are tons of vegetarians here…

    I live in Canada, and I’ve been giving serious thought to dietetics, i’m 25 and i’ve dropped the whole ego/money driven idea of living and decided to go for more of a fulfillment based type of career, i’ll be starting from scratch but it doesn’t really bother me! lol 😉
    In Canada the governing boards set up integrated residency, i was just wondering if the States also has the same program?
    Also, one thing i would really like to pick your brain about is, when your in class and they bring up the dietary information geared towards having people consume meat/animal products, obviously you don’t agree with it, so is it better to just keep it to your self, or do they encourage you to speak your difference of opinion?

  • i went to eatright.org out of curiosity and they’re presenting animal products. it looks like they’re stressing more consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. so what’s your take on their deal, why are they that lame. they also present “vegetarian” diets, it looks like they’re more about the marketing than the whole truth.
    what distinguishes them, are they biochemistry based or just an organization that has positioned themselves within industries or what?
    it makes sense that having some kind of marketable degree could be useful, but the reality is that it’s just like the stock market, it’s more about performance records than credentials, there are lots of arrogant clowns who do not understand financial markets and will lose money for their clients, even though they have lots of credentials…i guess there should be some kind of evaluation service and publisher that puts all of this mess into perspective.

  • I’m just curious, but why do dietitians have to go through a master degree program to practice starting in 2024? Are the roles expanding? Is the pay raising? Anyone please let me know!

  • The “evidence based practice” can be skewed (Big corporations work hand & hand with the government to have their privatized studies pushed to the forefront). That’s why Americans are in an obesity pandemic.

  • What happens to the registered dietitians that do not back up their statements with science? Like the ones recommending veganism and telling people that meat is bad.

  • There is a very overweight certified nutritionist selling a 21 day plan for insulin resistance who used to be a beachbody coach, and she was actually at a healthy weight when she was using beachbody and drinking shakeology.

  • I don’t trust RDs anymore. RDs have to toe the line of the academy of foods and nutrition which receives money from Coca Cola,Wendy’s, etc. RDs knowledge is outdated. RDs have to follow government guidelines which was corrupted by the food industry. RDs got me obsessed about the number in the scale and calories in vs calories out which backfires. RDs still think that eating fat is bad but they are ok with eating sugar and carbs. They are ok with eating 6 times a day to “control hunger “and “maintain metabolism” but the reality is the opposite. it’s sad that the RD is used and salesman for the processed food industry.

In most states its illegal to call yourself a Nutrionist without meeting the requirements or having a the credentials. I think you mean health coach or nutrition coach not Nutrionalist. Not to mention a good portion of our coursework is in biochemistry

I´m so confuse with the names and what they do. can somebody help me?

  • I’m 287 and am averaging losing 3-5 lbs a month. I’m working out with a trainer 5 days a week (virtually for now). I get one really kick-ass sweat dripping in my eyes workout per week and am too sore the rest of the week to kick it into that gear again although I still do the workouts. In addition to daily 1-2 mile walks. Something in my brain and muscles clicked this week for the first time and I felt my abs take the brunt of the workout rather than my thighs and shoulders, and all of a sudden my squats and deadlifts burn in my glutes which they didn’t at all before. In a month I’ve gained massive range of motion in my hips and much more flexibility which is making it easier. But the soreness is intense, I’m assuming that means I need better nutrition?
    I’m eating 1500 1700 calories a day. I’m fighting my sugar addiction ( chocolate) but still allow myself a little something (like a pudding cup) here and there. I am pretty carb heavy though. I’ve been told I can still have some carbs but they should be things like Ezekiel bread, not regular English muffins. I eat a lot of vegetables, no red meat (it hurts my stomach), lots of chicken. Does anyone have any thoughts?

  • Hey my name is Alex I’m 17 and my goal is to become a professional MMA fighter & I’ve recently seen that a lot of pro MMA fighter/boxers Needing to weight cut to get to a certain weight class,Therefor many professional fighters work with this nutritionist expert named George lockhart and after seeing him work and the way he talks about food and essentials that our body needs it had got me intrigued but I don’t know exactly how to study that or what exactly is the requirements to get in that profession or even what that job is called exactly.

  • In México you have to study 4 years to become a Nutritionist (In my collegue I had 4 years and a half) and then 1 year of social service or intership in a hospital �� and a Dietitian is someone who has a tecnic career of one or two years.

  • The difference is simple nothing hard about it Nutritionists who have gone to university are highly valued the nutrition part of it just like dieticians just not the medical part of nutrition. Up to you dieticians are poorly paid and yet spend all that time in placements so yes nutritionist with a degree you are fine if you dont want the hassle of unpaid placemebts and 5 years in college for low pay.

  • Hi I don’t believe in what people suggest is healthy. And I have a question if you are forced to tell them about a diet I consider a short fix and unhealthy. I’m only fifteen btw and what I consider healthy is cutting out carbs and using own body fats for energy and healthy fats from butter, olive oil and avocados. Thank you!

  • Thankfully in most of the provinces in Canada calling yourself a nutritionist means that not just anyone can call themselves that. You need to attend an accredited post secondary college or vocational school, take an exam and do regular upgrading. Most schools offer this course with a diploma or certificate at the end.

  • In some provinces of Canada like Quebec, the word Dietetician AND Nutritionnist are protected by the law. So they mean the same because they did the same education (a 4 years degree + 40 weeks of internship).

  • Nutrition and dietician degrees are not offered where I live. I live In El Paso TX. The closest to those degrees are an associates in nutrition a nd bachelor’s in public health. My interest in nutrition has grown lately.

  • Such an important distinction. Another thing that pops up on the internet as well is people who advertise the fact that they are a doctor to help further their nutrition advice platform but when you look deeper it turns out they studied something unrelated like chiropractics. It’s so important to check these things out before you launch yourself into someones dietary advice!!!

  • I beg to differ about animal protein and oils. Like you said, the information is out there and I have seen a lot of it. I believe in the ketogenic diet and I also believe that a plant-based diet is good as well. It is all in what you choose and how food is prepared.

  • I would rather be a Nutritionist (I am sure there is a difference between them and dieticians) and I can only do an online degree and the AND site did not give me the information I am looking for. Do they have to be the ultimate source of what schools I can attend that will be recognized as accredited enough to be recognized for me to be able to take a registration exam?   • You imply in this video that the vegetarian/vegan myth is not mainstream, but it seems to me it is. The recommended diet still includes dairy and meat but limits it and prefers margarine over butter.

  • An easy way to explain the difference is simply this..

    A “Nutritionist” is a job title (such as human resources, or personal assistant), who ever signs your paycheck sets your requirements for required education. As stated, they can be PhD’s or high school aids..

    “Registered Dietitian” is a federally regulated credential, the same as a lawyer or pharmacist. There is a minimum level of education, experience, and testing that must be satisfied to meet this requirement.

  • I’m actually completing my bachelors in nutrition and dietetics and I do not want to be a RD, but I do want to become a CN. Because a.) the science classes are a personal struggle for me..like you have no idea lol b.) I do not want to work in the medical field or around it, c.) one thing they never tell you….the unpaid internship is NOT free. d.) I’m attending culinary school after I graduate with my bachelors because I want to become a personal chef and do cooking classes (I want to have my own business). yes i know being a RD will look “better” but they are other routes and being a CN, does require schooling and an exam…just not the internship. So I totally agree with all that you said…find whats best for you

  • This video is very misleading. First off becoming a RD is not the only certified credential someone can have. One difference, a very important one, you forgot to mention is the fact that becoming a RD is more geared toward the clinical aspect. That’s why they require u to work in a hospital for you internship. Yes there are more opportunities, like having a masters over just a bachelors, but it’s not the only way. Some jobs don’t require a RD license but will accept it. And to say in your video that animal products are bad and in the same video say people should become a RD is completely wrong. Dietitians will most likely tell me to eat a huge variety of foods and not vegan due to all the health risk tht comes with it. I am not someone just blabbering I am in school for nutrition and I work in a hospital. Telling people to stay away from animal products is your advice, not the advice from the dietetics organization

So, who’s to say, I don’t have similar, abd in some cases more experience than many do have a college degree, or a certificate, because in addition to all that, in 51, abd have gone through a lot in my life, including having the kids, the oldest being 27, and having several issues, and not only diagnosing myself accurately, but also, healing myself of thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, fibroids (it’s not fun being a woman at times… ��), plantar fasciitis which I didn’t even know what it was when I started my research, sin issues, liver and kidney issues, etc. In addition, I have helped my children with migraines headaches, skin issues, IBS, etc., All these conditions I have helped, by helping our own smarty body heal itself, with proper nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle. Even my friends call to ask for my opinion on things. Many times I also suggest for them to find a good chiropractor, or natural, holistic doctor. Whenever my friends look for a nutritionist, they end up doing exactly what I told them, what they may want to do.

    So, a person like me is a natural, and there are many people life me who have a passion for something, a gift, and it didn’t matter how many certificate one has, without passion for what you do, it means very little. Having both is best, I understand that, but remember that many medical doctors have a PhD, and yet they’re hurting their patients on a daily bays by prescribing poisonous drugs, or procedures.

    Yesterday I went to my doctor, and after a full panel blood work and other tests, I’m a very healthy person. Even my vitamin D was optimal, thyroid, enduring in top shape.

    So, who’s to say, a person life me cannot start find what David Avocado is doing, and doing it right? I know passion, and David is passionate about his gift

  • Love your video until the end, yes we need to have lively discussions about various nutrition theories, but they should be informed theories. Agriculture, which included eating more grains and more milk and animal products, actually helped contribute dramatically to survival, civilization, and the ability for humans to concentrate on things other than hunting and gathering such as writing, art, science, architecture, etc etc. Grains and milk and meat are not inherently bad for us, but can contribute to health when used wisely. i love your analogy about firefighters trained vs volunteers. Volunteers have skills, but they are limited by the lower foundation of knowledge they have. That doesn’t mean they aren’t useful, or talented, but I would sure want a trained firefighter supervising them. And I certainly wouldn’t want just anyone coming to fight my fire, and making a big dumb mistake of throwing water on a grease or chemical fire. Same thing with nutrition, I want someone who is going to know how to help MY issue, not how to promote their belief. I want an RD. But I’m likely biased, since I am an RD. I enjoy hearing what non-RDs have to say about nutrition, but after researching it myself I rarely end up doing what they suggest completely.

  • I don’t understand why there seems to be so much disagreement in the dietetics field.  Shouldn’t the nutritional advice given be based on the results of the latest scientific, peer-reviewed studies?  There is a scientific consensus gravity, climate change, evolution, etc., but no consensus on the best diet for human beings?  The politics in that field are terrible.

  • This has changed. An RD must obtain a Master’s degree and an internship with experience in the 4 prongs of dietetics, Management, Food Service, Clinical Public Health. The field is challenging and making money depends on the quality of your education and how well you do/perform on the job. Many Doctors have no idea of how much some of us know or can specialize in if need be.

  • I am becoming a Registered Nutritionist for the simple fact that to become a Registered Dietitian you have to pass their test which is theory is good until you look at who financially contributes to the National Dietetics Association. 

    Seems to me to be a conflict of interest when you have major corporations like Coke & Pepsi, General Mills and even the National Dairy Council contributing financially to your organization. ( http://www.eatrightpro.org/…/advertis…/meet-our-sponsors)

    I highly doubt that if a company is contributing millions to an organization that said organization would publicize how toxic their food is and to not eat/drink it.

  • Very helpful. Thank you.:) Just curious, what are your thoughts on online dietetics programs that meet the requirements to take the R.D. exam? I just graduated with a bachelors in Exercise Science, but after finding out how passionate I am in the field of nutrition I’m seriously considering going back to school to get my bachelor’s in Dietetics. I am a mother of one and there aren’t really any dietetic on campus programs (that I can afford) near me. Kansas State has an online Dietetics program that seems pretty legit. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

  • Well, I don’t know what you guys gonna say. I’m from India. I was pursuing BSc nutrition and dietetics and left it after completing half the course. You might think this is crazy,insane or whatever. But the truth is if you’re really really interested then only go for it. Getting good teachers is very important. My university didn’t have proper management. So I didn’t succeed. All I wanna say is the this is not suitable for everybody. Think twice

  • The major is called Dietetics? Have not seen that at schools here. You get a degree in nutrition then do the internship & test you were talking about to become a registered dietitian.

  • Do you feel getting this certification affects your emotional health? I mean, as an RD student, they are training you a conventional American diet of high protein. I assume your tests and assignments constantly reinforce the high protein low carb diet. Does this play with your emotions and what you have researched and realize that is an unhealthy diet. Thanks

  • Really great video! I learnt a lot actually. But I wished you talked about what they teach as you become an RD… (To prepare some excited students who will be horrified when they hear some of the bull that is being taught in nutrition classes) I know some dietetics grads and they have been taught that milk is good for you and that CHEESE is healthy!! They seriously believe that… And they don’t believe casein causes cancer… Even though there are many studies out there. But don’t get me wrong, I’m ALL for vegans becoming RDs!! Promoting higher education is really important so thank you for this video!

  • Very informational video! I was considering for a little while to become a RD as well, but decided against it. I’d already studied at uni before and didn’t feel like going for another 4 years fulltime, and also the prospect of having to learn things I didn’t agree with all the time kind of bummed me out. Nevertheless, I am really happy there are vegans like yourself out there who are going for the RD title to make some big waves in the world!

  • I actually wanted to be a dietitian but my country doesn’t have this degree course yet. I would have to study abroad to be a dietitian. So I chose the food and human nutrition degree instead. But come to think about it, I would rather not be a dietitian. As you said, registered dietitians are required to go through clinical internship. That involves nutritional counseling. You would have to educate patients in accordance to the ‘healthy’ food pyramid (which involves eating meat) just to pass the internship. Ethically, it isn’t right, unless they give you a vegan patient which is highly unlikely…. 99% patients I see in hospitals ( I worked as an intern with dietitians before, but as a nutrition student) are non-vegans D: idk about your country though. Vegans are rare here in singapore but there are tons of vegetarians here…

    I live in Canada, and I’ve been giving serious thought to dietetics, i’m 25 and i’ve dropped the whole ego/money driven idea of living and decided to go for more of a fulfillment based type of career, i’ll be starting from scratch but it doesn’t really bother me! lol 😉
    In Canada the governing boards set up integrated residency, i was just wondering if the States also has the same program?
    Also, one thing i would really like to pick your brain about is, when your in class and they bring up the dietary information geared towards having people consume meat/animal products, obviously you don’t agree with it, so is it better to just keep it to your self, or do they encourage you to speak your difference of opinion?

  • i went to eatright.org out of curiosity and they’re presenting animal products. it looks like they’re stressing more consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. so what’s your take on their deal, why are they that lame. they also present “vegetarian” diets, it looks like they’re more about the marketing than the whole truth.
    what distinguishes them, are they biochemistry based or just an organization that has positioned themselves within industries or what?
    it makes sense that having some kind of marketable degree could be useful, but the reality is that it’s just like the stock market, it’s more about performance records than credentials, there are lots of arrogant clowns who do not understand financial markets and will lose money for their clients, even though they have lots of credentials…i guess there should be some kind of evaluation service and publisher that puts all of this mess into perspective.

  • Great video!  I have my BS in Genetics and I decided I didn’t want to do anything with it.  So I’m going for my MS in Nutrition this fall!  I feel that people like us are being called to arms to spread the right message!

  • I’ve got the RN angle covered. I’ve been handing out information to pt’s and their family members. I can’t hold this important information hostage in my brain! I just may go back to school to have the credentials to support my mission so I won’t get fired!

  • I am a Clinical Nutritionist in Trinidad and Tobago. I have my MSc in Medical Nutrition. In my country we are required to complete 2 Practicums for our BSc and register with a board. I find it severely annoying that often registered Nutritionists are degregated to not being as qualified as RDs. We do all the same courses are taught the same information, do all the same clinicals etc just some of us prefer choosing Practicums over clinical internships because we desire to work more on the field of foodservice, gastroenterology and not be institutionalized to figures. I run my practice and update my programs based in evidence based research, I work with medical doctors for my patients. RDs are not more or differently qualified that Registered Nutritionists. But to me we actually have a greater understanding of food science and functional patient consumption than just the statistical, charted, structured style of Dietitics. To me that approach manages chronic nutritional diseases more than cure or prevent and I think Real Nutritionists need to be more vocal generally of our role and function.

  • Wow, I find your definitions quite different from us in Africa.Personally am a registered clinical nutritionist in Kenya.I have gone through degree course in Nutrition accompanied by attachment ant internship in hospital set up upon which I got registered by the Kenya Nutritionists and Dietitian Institute.My scope of work has much to do with patients in the hospital.I think the bottom line here should be that ‘Is the person competent and qualified to work in the given area?’ and not really bringing out the superiority issue of which one seems stronger than the other between nutritionist and dietitian.My opinion though.

  • Hi Lauren, You may not be familiar with the many nutritionists who have Masters or doctoral degrees in nutrition or in a clinical healthcare field (covering all the biochemistry and life sciences) with additional coursework in nutrition, complete a supervised practice/internship and pass a national board certifying exam. The Certified Nutriton Specialist (CNS) is one such credential.. Looks from the comments that you received similar information a year ago. I hope you can update the information you are passing on about the profession. Thank you.

  • That is not true in all states, in some states you can work in hospital if you are Certified Nutritionalist Specialist education and clinical hours requirements are the similar to RDs except you have to have Masters or PhD which I think why RDs are changing their requirements as well

  • This is not accurate information. It really depends on what State you live in. In the state of Washington for example, the state licenses CN Certified Nutritionists, and CD Certified Dietitians. To be a CN you need a masters of phd in nutrition. to be a CD you need to be an RD. Both can practice MNT (Medical Nutrition Therapy) and work in hospital settings, bill insurance, etc. Please update your information because you give nutrtitionists that are licensed and have Masters and PHD a bad name. In Minnesota, you can become a CN with a PHD in nutrition. There are Non RD routes to practicing Medical Nutrition Therapy.

    i live in Paris, and know, i need to lose weight, tried to count points and calories, and do not do well with this i even signed up for online site ( sparkpeople),to help me counting calories. now my doc here, in Paris, said i must contact a doc to lose weight ( i am 35 pounds over weight and here, i am considered obese)
