REFINED SUGAR Refined sugar is sugar that has been processed from its natural form, such as sugar derived from sugar cane, sugar beets and corn. Examples of refined sugar are regular table sugar, brown sugar, high-fructose corn syrup and evaporated cane juice. Refined sugar is obtained by extracting natural sugar from foods like sugar cane, sugar beets, or corn. It’s generally added to nutrient-poor, processed.

We asked readers to send us their biggest nutrition questions and then posed the most common ones to a panel of registered dietitians: Maryann Walsh, RD, Maya Feller, RD, CDN, Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, Jim White, CPT, RD, and Bonnie Taub-Dix, RDN.Here, the experts weigh in on everything from cholesterol in eggs and sugar in fruit to low-carb diets and intermittent fasting. Ask the RD: What Counts as Refined Sugar? by Kelly Hogan, MS, RD Following a diet high in sugar, especially when combined with low fruit and vegetable intake, is linked to an increased risk of inflammation, chronic disease and some cancers. Refined sugar comes mostly from cane, sugar beets, and corn which are heavily processed to isolate the sugar.

Other names for refined sugars are sucrose, glucose and high-fructose corn syrup. This sugar is added to food for a sweeter taste, and is often disguised under multiple names on nutrition labels. “Raw and refined sugar are the same — they’re sucrose,” says Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco, who has published extensive research about the effects of sugar on the body. The main difference is the texture: “Raw sugar still has some impurities from the crystallization process and hasn’t been bleached,” explains Lustig.

Refined sugar includes sugar that’s been processed from sugar cane or sugar beet (think white and brown sugar) as well as high-fructose corn syrup and even agave syrup. It’s often referred to as processed sugar because the original sources are stripped of fiber and other good-for-you compounds. So, what’s the difference between fruit sugar and other sugars? “ Refined, or processed, sugars come under many names, including white sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, coconut sugar, palm sugar, invert sugar, high-fructose corn syrup—the list goes on!”. Refined cereals typically have 2 or fewer grams of fiber per serving, and one cup of a refined cereal, such as corn flakes, counts as 1 ounce of refined grains.

Pasta Unlike whole-wheat or whole-grain pasta, refined pasta lacks much of the fiber and the B-complex vitamins found in the unprocessed version. “Refined, or processed sugar, is stripped of all of its natural nutrients, leaving you with empty calories that make it easy to pack on extra weight,” says nutrition and fitness expert Dr. Pamela Peeke, author of The New York Times Bestseller “The Hunger Fix.” “When the weight is deposited deep in our bellies, a common occurrence after the age of 50, you increase the risk for heart disease and.

List of related literature:

If the food label contains several alternative names for refined sugar—DEXTROSE, FRUCTOSE, high FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, SUCROSE, malt sugar, maltose, HONEY—it is a high-sugar food.

While refined sugars and carbohydrates flood the blood with sugar, unrefined carbohydrates including whole grains, cereals, fruits, honey, maple syrup, and vegetables break down more gradually and release sugar slowly over a prolonged period of time and do not upset blood glucose levels.

  • good doctor some doctors act like it their job to give you paranoia in to complete changing how you live some un qualified doctors (or qualified doctors that are not using their brain) can make you think you have 4 chronic diseases and are going to die in a day as their first diagnosis before they run a test this is a calm doctor who doesn’t try and make you panic

  • I’m a little confused, Jane. When I had a P.E.T. scan, my body was injected with radioactive glucose. The sites of tumours in body was inferred by wherever the glucose gathered. Isn’t this an indication that tumours are hungry for this substance? Your advice really causes me some concern, as until now I’ve listened to others who claim (perhaps wrongly?) that the metabolism of the cancer cell relies on fermentation.

  • WHy 34 dislikes? What she’s saying is accurate. If you don’t eat sugar your body will convert protein and fat into glucose. Every cell in your body needs glucose. You can’t just starve the cells. Certain foods are said to kill cancer cells such as carrots and they have lots of sugar in them.

  • Hi.. My Dad is diabetic for more than 15 years.. He is being diagnosed for High Serum Creatinine(Ranging from 4.5 to 5.3) since last 2 years. He has undergone Angioplasty last year September. He lost tremendous weight and he feels low all the time. He has a lot of restrictions on diet. Fortunately he is not on dialysis as of now. Basic cause of his kidney and heart problems is Diabetes. We’re worried that any other body part may get into trouble. His vision is also blur. His tooth also has some problem. Because of high Serum Creatinine he can’t undergo any treatment for eyes and teeth. Please please suggest anything that may reduce his pain and lower serum Creatinine. He can’t even sleep during nights.

  • Hello I need help to improve of help my kidneys function I am only 19 years old and have CKD my function is at 39% I need help to control my blood pressure if you guys have anything I’d great appreciate anything

  • Hello Dr.,
Thank you for the video.  Lots of information.

I’ve had 4 kidney stones since 1978.  The first one passed on its own after 4 days.  The second one also passed on its own within one evening.  Both with a great deal of pain.  The third one, at 10 mm, was eliminated with lithotripsy.  At that time, I knew there was one remaining stone, about 4-5 mm.  A year and a half later, that 4th one was lithotripsided.  That was performed just 3 weeks ago.  After surgery, the Dr. said it was obliterated.  3 weeks later, after an X-ray, it was discovered that it was still there at the same size.  I had blood in my urine for 2 weeks and have not passed any parts of the stone.

I started taking a supplement, called Theralith, after the 3rd stone.  I am afraid to have lithotripsy again as I feel my kidney took quite a beating.  I do not want intervention to remove it through the urethra, as I feel that could cause more problems.  Should I wait and do lithotripsy next year or wait until it starts to pass?  What would your suggestion be?

    Thank you.
    Linda
