Can You Guess The Serving Size Of These Foods?

Know your serving sizes on the new Nutrition Facts label

The good news is a newer, better food label has been proposed, which will include more accurate serving sizes, larger and bolder font sizes for calories, vitamin D amounts and a new requirement to include added sugars. The bad news is enforcement of these labels has been extended until early 2020. Labels can be tricky and food manufacturers often lower the serving size on a label. In 1993, when FDA created the Nutrition Facts label, the standards used to determine serving sizes—called the Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs)—were based primarily on surveys of food.

Instead of trying to memorize lists of ounces, cups, and tablespoons, simply compare the serving sizes of foods to familiar things. For example, a single serving of: Vegetables or fruit is about. A serving, or serving size, is the amount of food listed on a product’s Nutrition Facts, or food label (see Figure 1 below).

Different products have different serving sizes, which could be measured in cups, ounces, grams, pieces, slices, or numbers—such as three crackers. The Keep an Eye on Portion Size Z Card will help you assess food portions and meet your healthy eating goals. Building 31.

At the same time, ask your nutritionist what percentage of your calories should come from fat, carbohydrates and protein. This will help you put together meals and snacks that are conducive to a healthy diet. You may want to ask about serving sizes so.

  • See, here in the UK, we get small bags of crisps at a time (‘chips’ for you Americans) and one bag is a serving size, so we don’t find it strange

  • As soon as they all were like ‘yeah 20, 25 chips is a serving right?’ I knew they were doomed.

The first shock of my life with food is when I decided to weigh out a serving of cereal. I felt like my whole life had been a lie.

  • I just realize I have quite good snack habits… hearing them speak about the quantities that they feel are normal to them. I never eat that much my natural instinct is that’s way too much.

  • The most important thing that is missed about adhering to the serving size, is that you get to enjoy the thing you love for so much longer before buying again! Yes it may seem small but just imagine if something has 24 servings. That’s 24 different occasions that you get to enjoy it, instead of binging, hating it, and never wanting to see it again, until tomorrow, then one day you don’t want to ever eat it again. Until the next year, and then you’re done with it entirely.

  • Fun fact there’s a difference between a serving size and a portion size, serving size is just used typically to figure out nutrition facts whereas a portion size is how much you “should” eat (they’re usually pretty small too though)

  • Why is the one team closer to the actual serving size but there dish looks way fuller than the serving size than the other team is off but there cup looks closer ‍♀️

  • In the first video that i watched, she didn’t have makeup on, so i was shocked (for some reason?) seeing her with makeup on in another vid

I do this all the time tho with people i know who i haven’t seen with makeup on XD

  • Foods:
Me: Meat, potatoes, fish, vegetables, rice, mushrooms, dairy, pasta, fruit

Americans: Chips, pop tarts, cheetos, oreos, goldfish crackers, m&m´s…

  • All their bad habits are relate able. Four pop tarts is a serving? Yes, girl. At least one sleeve of oreo’s is a serving? YAS, Y’ALL.

  • What is even a serving size? Just meet hour daily calorie intake and thats it. You can eat a full bag of chips and eat less in dinner…

  • Doctors are highly educated, but I find many of them poor communicators. If they meant “not to have more than 2 SERVINGS (each serving being 4ounces raw or 3 ounces cooked) per week, then that’s what they should say and not to say “not more then twice a week”. Twice a week means two days a week. If you eat 3x a day and assuming it includes meats, you’ll potentially each 3 servings of meat each day and end up eating 6 servings in that one week. The doctor is suppose to know this and not the patient. It’s like a teacher knowing teach high school math in grammar school.

  • Please revisit this but also use the portion recommendations from the food pyramid, since portion sizes are small to make you get a variety of food types.

  • Those who mention qualities like “serving size” should specify how the powers-that-be settled on how serving sizes were determined. I’d like to hear someone define “serving size” scientifically.

  • I actually like to eat mine raw like sushi. Sprinkle just a pinch of salt no dishes to clean no splattered grease on your stove to clean.

  • I never thought of it as in ounces. That’s good to know. I had my gall bladder out in 2012 and I have had digestive problems ever since with constipation. Lately I am really craving meat but it is hard to digest. I’m going to the GI because I’m toast on the whole thing. I’ve never been a big meat eater but I think I need a little and since I crave it I assume I’m deficient.

  • Great info. Another great resource is http://www.nutritionfacts.org (it summarizes peer-reviewed published medical studies related to diet and health into short, easy to understand videos and articles that are well referenced). Thank you, UC, for making these presentations available to the public!

  • eeee shoes in the kitchen!! i can’t. i actually have a box of shoe covers at my front door so if i happen to get a visitor who either does not want to remove his or her shoes or whose shoes are difficult to remove, on the shoe covers go!

  • Am I the only one who got excited over the tax bit? my hubs is an accountant! We have our own practice! Let me know if you need some help with it! Lol

Also, as you made your toast and banana lunch, I thought ‘that’s not much of a lunch!’……. as I was sitting down to my lunch of peanut butter and honey on toast with a banana….‍♀️

  • The serving size is very often put at the top of the nutritional information, carbohydrates/sodium/fat/sugar per however many/grams/ml/etc. Also, I would often give my kids the serving sizes they suggest like the chips, oreos, and more.

Btw, if you are diabetic (like me) small, even numbers are so awesome compared to high random odd numbers.

  • I started following the recommended portion a while ago and I noticed that it was indeed quite small but I also wanted to eat enough per day. It basically forced me to eat with a lot of variation to meet my calorie standard next to the grains and carbs I usually eat

  • Why do you sound so hot when you say Jelly Babies? If my future wife can’t say Jelly Babies the way you do I ain’t getting married.

  • Ha funny

    I do this every day

    Yes I am hungry

No don’t call the police on my family I’m fine

  • I love how controversial this video is among grandmas. Not that I assume elbat has massive 85 year old woman following (I am aware 85 isnt the standard grandma age dont come for me) however u have the grandma’s who dont think that portion sizes are enough food and starving children and the there are grandma’s who concern themselves with health standards for their young grandchildren both equally as good grandparent just with different views on portion sizes

  • Only people who actually eat like that are old, skinny people… My grandma eats 3 Tablespoons of oats with a tiny bit of milk and a handful of fruit for breakfast… How?? I eat 5x that..

  • I typically do this because I’m type 1 diabetic and am on a carb restricted diet. Typically though, 60g of carbs is a lot and you get filled with alot of keto foods.

  • You decided to do taxes on a day you knew you were going to be starving yourself basically? Girl, you are brave!! But I get hangry very easily haha

  • The serving size is it how many you should eat it’s just a number that they use to give you a amount o know how many sugars and others things are in that amount and to track calories it’s not how many you eat at once

  • I have no self control, so I honestly eat a whole bag of chips in about 30 minutes. Which is just kinda tragic tbh, especially considering I haven’t worked out a day in my life (apart from PE in middle school, and even then I did everything to skip out on that)

  • Why is your face so close to the camera? I unconsciously move my head away from the phone. I love your videos but sometimes I get disturbed a bit by that. it’s like you’re invading my personal space HAHA.

That annoyed me sooo much, like, it’s still edible, it’s just black, you…. racist.

  • Serving size is determined for tiny people that basically sit on their ass all day. You want to eat more food without the fear of gaining fat? Lift weights. Muscle burns fat and calories like a mofo. A mid range female powerlifter consumes between 3k and 4k calories a day. Men between 5-6k. If you go for competitive lifting those values increase. • How does she eat more than I do, even with recommended serving sizes and stay thin??

I mean today was my cheat day, and all I’ve eaten today was a whopper and small fry…

  • This was fun, but you do realise porridge and cereal and bread etc say as part of a balanced diet. You are not supposed to just have a slice of bread for lunch. You are supposed to have 5 fruit and vegetables and day and also seeds and nuts in your diet. Put a few portions of different food together to make a meal, keep calories in line with your guideline daily amount x

  • This doesn’t take people such as myself in to account, if I’m working or doing anything physical, if I’m not taking in at least 6k calories a day, I lose weight unhealthily.

  • How does she eat more than I do, even with recommended serving sizes and stay thin??

I mean today was my cheat day, and all I’ve eaten today was a whopper and small fry…

  • I am so done with people who are complaining about their portion sizes. Just because a serving of porridge is 30g doesn’t mean that is what you are meant to eat for a meal. A complete meal would include more than that. At least fruit. And with the cookies, you are likely meant to eat 2. Just because you a portion is so much doesn’ t mean you can’t eat more. I don’t know who decided that is what the serving size meant.

  • This is exactly why turning “servings” into a unit were a terrible idea from the beginning. People that have functional brains now need to do an extra step of putting it back to reasonable units, while the idiots are still stumbling around. If we had it all in grams or ounces, at least it would be obvious to count… and the people that don’t even want to count, they were never in the reach of dietitians.

Reasonable measurements are per kg (or per ounce), then per whole package, then all values (including mass) calculated per 1000kcal of the product. Those can be compared, or can be counted.
