A 2014 study by the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health found that in a sample of nearly 24,000 subjects, diet soda drinkers consumed more calories from food than their full-sugar-soda drinking peers. Some people argue it’s not so much the diet soda that causes weight gain, but that habitual diet soda drinkers tend to be less healthy overall. The U.S. dietary guidelines are decidedly meh. Although added sugar is a top public health concern, diet soda is consistently met with something between distrust and hostility.

Dig into the. News Diet soda is a nutritional pariah, but the case against it is thin The attitude in the nutrition community isn’t just that you shouldn’t drink soda, it’s that you shouldn’t even want to drink. For the most part, diet soda consumption and overall increased risk of early mortality had a positive association, meaning the more someone drank diet soda, the higher their odds of early death. The strongest evidence so far links regular diet soda intake with cardiovascular conditions, such as stroke and heart attack, as well as type 2 diabetes. Because diet soda lovers tend to substitute these drinks for milk, they’re at higher risk of calcium deficiency.

Sugar-free drinks aren’t healthier for your pearly whites, either. “If you drink a diet soda, that won’t make up for eating a super-size fast food meal,” says Planells, a spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Breaking the diet soda habit, if you.

  • maybe changing modes…. i mean, if drinking something sweet on a regular daily basis is what is part of your diet, well dont let it be soda…. or bottled processed juices (snapple, etc.)…. instead get the blender and supplement that soda a day with a sweet veggie or fruit drink… i mean, if you gotta have it, then make it rather natural (w/ fruits and veggies)… for example, make it a smoothie of celery and a green apple…. or watermelon and grapes….. WHAT IS REALLY THE PROBLEM?. THE PROBLEM IS THAT PEOPLE ARE ADDICTED TO SODA POP… BUT SODA DOES NOT COME FROM A PLANT, VEGGIE OR FRUIT…. AND THAT’S NOT GOOD FOR THE BODY…

  • This is glorious, I’ve been looking for “clean bulk definition” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across Senictoria Bulking Paradise (do a search on google )? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my partner got cool success with it.

  • This video suggests that insulation is released when we test something sweet, as opposed to actual sugar being consumed. I am not convinced that it is correct. If that was the case then there is no point in having a product called sweetener?

  • Actually this is somewhat false. There are numerous long term studies that show long term diet soda drinkers tend to have higher risks for heart attack or stroke and they tend to be larger. Now there is nothing in diet soda that seem to suggest it would cause any of these problems. So it may be food choices but it’s far better to simply drink water or natural tea or coffee vs drinking artificial soda.

  • I’m a soda enthusiast and I HATE when I search on YouTube “diet…. Taste test” and videos such as “DIET SODA WILL GIVE YOU THIS IN ONE HOUR?” “DANGERS OF DIET SODA” “STOP DRINKING DIET SODA RIGHT NOW” ” IT ONLY TAKES ONE SIP” appear in the results instead of actual taste tests. That’s not what I’m looking for and ALL these videos are BULLSHIT AND CLICKBAIT!

  • At least for me, I drink diet soda due to my type 1 diabetes which already raises my risk of an early death.

    Correlation does not equal causation

  • Appreciate video content! Apologies for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you tried Taparton Impressive Look Takeover (do a search on google)? It is a smashing exclusive product for Getting a bikini ready body in 60 days minus the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my work buddy finally got great success with it.

  • Great Video clip! Apologies for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you ever tried Taparton Impressive Look Takeover (do a google search)? It is a good one of a kind guide for Getting a bikini ready body in 60 days minus the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my old buddy Taylor after a lifetime of fighting got great results with it.

  • The leading cause of obesity in the united states is from people eating apples. This channel tells me I’m better off eating peanut butter cups and taking steroids

  • Doctor, I am going to chime in because there is very little definitive evidence against diet soda and I know have all the proof I need. I have been struggling with weight loss for several years despite knowing the power of a ketogenic diet.

Fed up in 2019, I began the year on a strict low-carb diet and intermittent fasting. Still, even at 16/8, the results were garbage compared to what most people report on such a diet. Pretty soon I started OMAD and saw almost no results.

One thing I should note: I started each day with 1 or 2 cans of Monster Zero, a non-caloric energy drink sweetened with stevia and sucralose. I should also note that I sweetened my black coffee with stevia (No other sweeteners like dextrose) I also would enjoy Coke Zero or Pepsi Max throughout the day. My mood and hunger would fluctuate throughout the day.

In September, I decided to cut out ALL sweeteners. Lei and behold: I began to lose weight and felt great on my intermittent fasting low-carb diet. And quickly! To this day, very few sources claim diet soda hinders weight-loss. Most articles propose the idea but no one has come along with actual proof until now. I am the living proof and it’s all the proof I need.

Likewise, a tumor on my wrist (Which I thought was a bone spur but turned out to be a ‘bible cyst’) disappeared completely after two months. Another growth on my shoulder has diminished greatly and looks like it should also be gone in time.

People hate on me for speaking out against their beloved sweeteners but I intend to spread the truth. I am happy to answer any questions.

  • If people know a little about Weston Price’s studies, they’ll never eat junk foods again. Many people saying that went raw vegan and got better. You don’t need to go raw vegan, you need to eat your fruits and veggies and traditional whole foods. I already had a good diet for normal people standards and go vegan made no difference for the better. Instead, it made my depression more severe, since the most essential brain nutrients are found in animal fats. I cured eating fatty fish and liver, having a good diet still and making strenght training.

  • I stopped drinking soda because of sugars after four months I’ve lost 40 pounds I was feeling great and figured I would have a Pepsi max because I wanted to treat myself to a soda without the sugar well after having three of those cans over a three day period,, I started having extremely bad heart palpitations and ended up in the hospital! They got my history and told me it was the aspartame

  • Look at the crap Michael Phelps ate during training, 12000 KCal.
And I still claim, exercise is a necessary nutrient. Vitamin X.
    Get some.

  • I really agree with the content but it was really really difficult to follow this talker because she kept tripping over her words “a.. an.. Um.. ah” and doing pauses and stuff… but I totally agree with diet and nutrients. Very important.

  • America the melting pot of foods, cultures, so forth; old world goods to new worls foods. “Natural flavors” is not always a good thing. Bioengineered foods, GMO foods, artificial,…it is shocking ehat Google says & possibly mote shocking what truly are these things people are given in the name given for foods. Are these things even to be comdumed in what we would see as their natiral staye before the transformation. Grafting, cloning…science gone off track. Reverse to where, what foods are still really back in the days of the Bible condumably good for the body. Many of those foods now are said to cause dis-ease. Thank you!!!!!

  • The real story here is the whole debate about the palatability of diet soda. Recent data suggests that sixty percent of people can’t drink it due to the revolting flavor, while forty percent of people are painfully deluded and drink diet soda out of some warped sense of self-hatred. We need to study the subject more, but it seems likely that diet soda may be an early indicator of self-harm. Truly fascinating stuff!

  • hey I’m no muscle builder or anything like that but the day I found out I was diabetic I switched to diet soda my story began ever since I was a 5 year old boy my mother fed me nothing but soda and TV dinners she never made home made meals that where healthy anyways getting back I was always unhealthy as a child and let’s travel into the future about 5 years I am ten I come to the town I currently am in and me and my dad are on our own my father left my father I won’t get into it but I became even more depressed and started to eat more and more un helthy foods so let’s travel into the future about 3 years I am 13 years old and I started to get these feeling of weakness so I went to the hospital and found out I have type 2 diabetes it really hit me hard I started to eat mor and more healthy and drink diet sodas about 6 to 7 months after that I lost a total of 25 pounds and at the time it sounded very good to know that I accomplished somthing that I havnt done for years and it felt really good to know that I have done that so let’s travel about 4 years later where I currently am I am 17 years old and it seems that I havnt lost any but I havnt gained any and it dosnt feel good but it dosnt feel bad either. so my question to you or to anyone who is willing to open up and tell me…………..What do you suggest my next step is?

  • Everything we ingest, either food or visions or sounds sit deep within our subconscious. Be aware of everything your brain and mind process. Make proactive choices and choose happiness daily

  • Hey Aaron, quick note lately you guys have been doing a lot of videos surrounding bad ‘diet’ research (‘Cheese and breast cancer’, ‘Red meat and depression’, ‘is cereal a superfood’, ‘red meat and cancer’ to name a few), I think that those might appeal to a certain percent of your viewers, but others (myself included) would appreciate more clinical videos like you did in the past, rather than grinding down over low-risk headlight-attracting dietary research.

  • It’s awkwardly funny how half of this video is castigating researchers and journalists for publishing only for publishing’s sake… but the introduction to the video mocks/criticizes the channel for over-producing videos on soda. Meanwhile, the view count is almost 10x higher than most healthcare triage videos…

  • It seems as a simple and effective solution getting optimal micronutrients but even better that it can be done with better food and life style choices and it might be helpfull to have the possibility of buying takeaway following these guidelines

  • I agree that claims should be backed by scientific evidence; but I don’t have time to read long scientific journals all day. Thanks for the post!

  • Everything is a chemical argument is played out. It doesnt make artificial sweeteners safe or healthy. You could have said the same thing about tobacco its still not safe.

  • My solution: cut back on all soda. Too much sugar in regular, too many migraines in artificial sweeteners (your mileage may vary).

  • my advice to any ADHD patient here, and i am one of them, these three things helped me alot do it every morning and you will notice the difference,(30 minutes cardio, 20 minutes medidation, micronutrients ).

  • Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about “diet to bulk up muscle” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across Senictoria Bulking Paradise (search on google )? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my buddy got excellent success with it.

  • Doesn’t antidepressants unmask mania? Meaning that they are given antidepressants because they are expressing depression but when they take the antidepressant the depression disappears and the mania/hypomania presents. They were always bipolar?

  • If soda company’s went by the absolute risk they would lose money and if the sugar was the problem you would get sued the crap out of and never heard from again.

  • There are people who drink Soda, or diet soda every day, and never have heart problems. Who’s to say that these people they were studying would have had these heart problems regardless if they were drinking soda or not?

  • as a lazy, fast food junkie, student whos addicted to soda, i lost about 6 kg in about 5 months just by switching to diet coke without changing diet or workout routine.

  • Average age 69 years old! The majority of people drinking diet soda already have problems from being obese. This is BS! Why does your body need milk? This Doctor is a FAIL.

  • diet soda isn’t good or bad because after effect you get equals jolt you get from it. Like equal energy for equal loss of energy.

  • All mental health problems are caused by severe calcium deficiency. This begins in the womb or in infancy. The human body can assimilate calcium only from fresh, natural, uncooked foods especially leafy greens and grasses, wheatgrass. Artificial supplements do not work. The best way to get the calcium from greens is through green smoothies.

Brain chemical imbalances have never been proved.

One of the reasons why mental health problems generally develop or manifest in late adolescence is because of the body’s need for tremendous amounts of calcium due to the sudden spurt in physical growth.

Calcium is needed for proper neurotransmitter function.

It is also important to minimise chronic cellular inflammation by avoiding white sugar, refined carbs and oils and fats that increase cellular inflammation.

Cellular inflammation prevents the absorption of nutrients vitamins and minerals.

  • 99% of the people who drink diet sodas are already in bed health. Most are also seriously over weight and all those reasons they have heart problems. If this is you you better long fast and save tour life and fix what’s wrong in your body. I was diabetic, had edema and weighed over 450 lbs. Thanks to Dr. Jason Fung and his books I’m now 190 lbs and no longer diabetic or have edema. I lost 230 in about 9 months.

  • Why don’t you link to the actual scientific reports. I’d like to see for myself because this goes contrary to my experience and research I have read myself that says that there has been no negative symptoms associated with aspartame. I’m drinking about 8 cans of diet soda a day and I have no problem losing weight and it helps me kill hunger.

  • I lost a pant size went from 40 to 38 and a shirt size 2XL to XL switching to diet coke cause I drank a lot. But I also ran half a mile a day.

  • I’ve been on Prozac for 5 months for my anxiety. I’ve seen things clearer for a while thanks to the meds. I also know that I don’t want to rely on them for the rest of my life. I had a few drinks at night, for the past week, scotch. I felt my anxiety and my constant running of thoughts, return very quickly. I believe alcohol should be mentioned as well as processed food and sugar.

  • I’m trying to get a better grasp on the concept of absolute risk vs relative risk with respect to a study’s ‘baseline risk’…I would think that a risk increase of 10% is ‘bad’ regardless of baseline — isn’t understanding a number’s relative impact the whole point of using percentages in the first place? I’m sure I am just lacking some knowledge/understanding on this — does anyone know if Aaron has any videos on this subject, or links to other videos that might explain the concept? Thanks for any help!

  • Of course Soda is bad for you. It’s a huge amount of sugar. What I don’t understand, is why it has to be such an extreme amount of it. It starts tasting worse at that point anyway.
Also, why are there only zero sugar or full on 80g of sugar options? Why can’t there be an in between? I imagine that would be healthier.

  • This video deserves multiple thumbs up. Thank you for drawing attention to the push for publishing and the potential dangers of this.

  • Ooh god I’m so sick of the water one. That seems super popular.

‘You MUST drink 8(250ml)x glasses of water everyday, at least! Got to get those 2 litres of H2O, fellas! Science says so!

Mm-hmm perhaps if I’m running a marathon everyday and do not receive fluids from any other food source (soups, sauces, fruits, vegetables, ice cream, jello, yoghurt).

I think moderation or just drinking when I’m thirsty will do fine, thanks. To every self appointed nutritionist expert out there, I don’t want your opinion unless you have a PhD and/or you’re a Certified Dietician and you know my medical condition…

Because the title ‘nutritionist’ means absolutely nothing. It’s not a qualification or even a short course. It’s a buzzword people use to sound authoritative.

So if anybody ever comes up to you and introduces themselves as a nutritionist to you and starts giving you advice, tell ‘em where to stick their Google knowledge.

  • If people are stupid enough to drink this crap when they know it contains aspartame. what other shit are they shoveling into their mouths. That should also be considered in the “study”, not just the soda.

  • What studies have shown is that a balanced diet is helpful, but it’s not going to reverse or cure serious issues like long term major depression, anxiety disorder, trauma, etc. It helps to manage.

  • Ancient wisdom proven right again: eating is the prime factor in disease, and restricted diet is the best treatment (Ali b. Abi-Taleb)

  • The second quote from Dr. John Ioannidis seems to have a typo. It says “Much of the literature silently assumes” instead of “Much of the literature simply assumes” which is what Aaron read out loud.

  • Just as a side note, it doesn’t help when artificial sweetners DO give people migraines and make them feel sick (I’m one of those people) and when MSG does cause horrible abdominal pains that can last for days (I’m one of those people, too). That said, not all artificial things are bad, but something that repeatedly affects your own health in a negative way IS. Just as gluten (which isn’t an artifical chemical, but large amounts of people who have no wheat allergy still hate it for some strange reason…) is the easiest meat substitute for my body to digest (and real meat, again, causes nasty intestinal problems for me), perhaps MSG and artificial sweetners work fine for other people. It seems to me that it’s so very hard to predict how one person’s body will react to something that, perhaps, we simply need better availability of “special needs” options, rather than to try to make sweeping generalizations. Nevertheless, the soda wars shall likely continue.

  • I love the fact that Pepsi Max is my favorite, then i won’t have to feel so bad all the time. I don’t really drink anything else ecxept for water and milk

  • I have a work colleague who is a doctor with bipolar disorder and she manages it completely through specific researched nutrition successfully for 10 years now.

  • I drink diet drinks because I have type 1 diabetes. So I drink diet drinks and I’ll probably die early, thus reinforcing this correlation. But it’s the diabetes that’s gonna kill me, not the diet Coke!

  • Please understand that those of us in Europe have long known about the dangers of diet Coke. We also know that eating fast food is dangerous. Strangely enough, we now know that eating gluten free food is a harmful diet. Only about 1% of people have celiac disease which means that they must live on a gluten free diet at all times. The fad for buying glutten free food is just a con to make consumers think that a gluten free product is healthier. Most food, sold as gluten free, is more expensive and useless.

  • I think that inconclusive evidence, incomplete research, research that can’t be duplicated shouldn’t even talked about at all because people remember the description of these results and not that they’re not proved to be causation or that the study wasn’t large enough or wasn’t repeatable in other studies. They only remember the bullet points.
Please lets focus on giving people correct info (bananas are berries, peanuts are not nuts, what we call continents is a disaster) from the beginning. Somehow simplifying information has turned into misinformation being taught and then having to un-teach these things is hard. It’s why people still believe that artificial sweeteners cause cancer.

  • I’m almost 21 and I’ve been spooked off of processed food and I cook my own food from scratch now and I definitely feel healthier, but no I’m not magically cured of everything and I still need to diversify my diet. I have been making more curries to help me keep cramming veggies down my throat. I also spend way less money cooking rather than buying premade with preserves.

  • I’m not native in english and understand only half of the medical terms he’s using, but I just love that guys accent. It’s like music.

  • Hey there Doc.
I would like to hear if you have made a video on someone who eats a regular diet along with diet sodas.
Are they better for me than Regular Coke and regular Pepsi just by what is in them?

  • At first I was super disappointed that this didn’t actually provide any answers to the question “Is diet soda a health hazard?” but now I’m 100% on board with your point that we can’t really ever answer that question definitively.

(Either way, I’m gonna keep drinking this Diet Coke in front of me, and incidentally it’s for one of the reasons noted in the video. Back when I was in college I would drink 2L of regular pop a day, and eventually I realized that drinking 1500 calories worth of pop every day probably wasn’t a good idea. I switched to diet and never looked back!)

  • Several scientists? I just spent all night searching and I couldn’t find any research studies linking aspartame to health risks. If you find any actual studies please send them to me.

  • I stopped drinking all soda 2 months ago. I have no plans to ever start again, just hope I succeed, but the longer you don’t have any, the better chance I never touch it again. It will make us all fat and unhealthy, both regular and diet.

  • diet soda, ah please, who you trying to fool? you’re still consuming sugar, high fructose corn syrup, a 12 ounce can of soda has about 40 grams of sugar, 0 or 150 calories, doesn’t matter, it’s still sugar water. I hate when people eat a lot and then they go get some diet soda, come on! drink water! no calories and no sugar!

  • They never said associaton equals causation, so why are you so upset?

(employed by Wisom Natural Brands, the makers of SweetLeaf Stevia)

  • Hilarious. Too bad this info has’nt reached Canada yet. I went slightly more insane when I went ahead and did the research into my disorder…..okay guys, I can’t afford to eat properly, my research is saying I need protien in order to synthesize the hormones, etc. required to rebuild balance in my brain.
My doctor says SSRI should do it.
    Need I say more?
I am a tradesperson. Not a doctor. A person of higher education would have to be delusional to not see that proper nutrition is absolutely crucial to treating mental disorder.
    Its sickening.

  • Heart issues the same. Stay away from processed foods. Eat salmon” my surgeon said! They or rather many hopefully are getting there these doctors of ours! FINALLY!

  • Thank-you for that video. I’m so tired of feeling guilty for drinking a Diet Coke once in a while. I’ve even started only drinking them in private because people look at me like I’m shooting heroin in restaurants. I know I don’t ‘need’ them but that’s not really the point.

  • Get the book “Fast Food Genocide” by Fuhrman M.D. He goes into great detail about the brain and how fast food, cooked food and sugars and white breads and rice, etc. are causing us all to be angry and depressed and sick. There are lots of tests done over years and years to figure out how to help people. Eat raw, uncooked veggies and fruits is the main message. I say add organic to that.

  • Don’t forget the lobbyists. The sugar producers have funded a lot of the research into how bad artificial sweeteners are, but the same lobbyists and industries also bend the facts about how bad sugar can be in large amounts. One example of a stupid law, Tic Tacs that are 99.9% sugar can be classed as ‘Sugar Free’ because of FDA rules about serving size. As the manufacturers say a single Tic Tac is a serving, the individual Tic Tac contains a negligible level of sugar and can therefore be advertised as sugar free.
It always pays to read the research and not the headlines.

  • You need water of course but you don’t need milk as the doctor says here dairy consumption carries a whole other set of risk factors.

  • Hello all, I lost 27lb in 3 weeks by following simple steps

And find out how I did it

Do you fancy, then depriving it has failed, and uva ursi.

  • Proper kick up the arse for me this video. Drinking 2 cans of Diet Coke a day, It explains so much the way I have been feeling of late. Thanks.

  • So, I get migraines from artificial sweeteners and low-calorie sweeteners. That’s a fact. So my entirely uninformed hypothesis is that what it does to you may just depend on your genes, just like how some people have allergies. Apparently my enzymes just freak their little dicks off when they see these weird molecular shapes. Or something. It’s called an ‘intolerance,’ I’m told, not quite like an allergy, but sort of similar. I even have different reactions to different stuff. Aspartame and sucralose give me migraines, but Stevia just gives me a mild headache. The worst part with the former is, even if I get some medicine in my body soon enough to avoid a migraine, I still get a headache, mild to moderately, and have to keep taking medicine for about 30ish hours, I’m guessing cause that’s how long it takes my body to process it.

Anyone else get these headaches/migraines from artificial and/or low-calorie sweeteners?

  • If you just ran across this video and happen to be reading my comment first, please just look for another video. This research is just ridiculous! How can CBS show this!?

  • Diet soda is acid forming, youtube search ‘diet soda makes you fat’. You should not drink milk. It has way too much protein and may cause osteoporosis. We already have way too much protein in our diets.

  • Did they take into account life factors? Thats always the question. I hear diet soda is bad from health nuts but idk atm. Prob ok for weight loss but health and weight can be separate things when u have ur weight at a healthy range.

  • ive noticed when i have a diet soda my tricep fat and some other places like to come out but when im eating healthy none of that happens

  • What do you think about monk fruit sweetener, its all natural and tastes exactly like table sugar I’m afraid it’s too good to be true and if I make a big pitcher of lemonade with it I will blow my ketosis same as if I had regular sugar, it says zero carbs and zero calories, I bought a bag of regular and a bag of peanut butter powder sweetened with monk fruit for 10 bucks a piece, totally worth it if its keto friendly.

  • Virgil’s makes a line of sodas that may work. What are your thoughts?
Ingredients: Sparkling Filtered Water, Proprietary Natural Sweetener Blend (Erythritol, Stevia, Monk Fruit), Natural Flavors, Citric Acid For Flavor
Although I would caution drinking too much erythritol at a time.

  • Lost 76 lbs on keto in exactly 6 months this Sunday. Drinking diet soda whole time. Try to limit to one 12oz can day and clear ie:Sierra Mist, 7Up, Sprite 3to 1 over Coke Pepsi etc. mainly due to caramel coloring damage to kidneys. Min 40 oz water day. Black green tea.

  • So if I fill a gallon container with water and add the two packets of artificial sweetner, say Grape, then it is unhealthy? I could drink this artificial drink almost every day. It isn’t soda and it doesn’t have sodium, so you’d think it would be a healthier choice.

  • my concern with soda…and I do love some soda, is the fact that it dissolves metal…and can be used as a cleaning agent…how is that property affecting our bodies?

  • I lost 80 pounds with diet soda. Didn’t drink water. Drank diet tea too. I got another 80 to go. I’m doing intermittent fasting with water. Finally after years of trying to get used to the taste. I’m finally okay with it. And already in the last year limited soda. I’ve been on and off my diet for months. It’s time to go even harder. Might go back on low carb soon and see if I can reverse diabetes which I haven’t been tested for but my brain fog don’t lie. It’s brutal and the reason I want to get healthier. Slowly but surely learning to eat less processed foods and more fruit and less sugar and carbs.

  • Whey protein also has artificial sweeteners and you still drink it. Explain how I drink diet coke every single day and I’m still ripped and shredded, explain it, come on 😉

  • Funny thing is how you demonize aspartame and artificial sweeteners in diet coke yet you don’t have a problem with consuming artificial sweeteners in your whey protein. This video is pure bro science bs. I really hope nobody will believe in these lies.

  • I get so very depressed when I eat badly. Following a vegan diet 90% of the time and I am off my anti depressants. If I eat badly I get very very depressed and extremely anxious! I cannot afford to not eat well!

  • We need to stay far away from sugar and caffeine it’s definitely not good for us that is why I’m going to start eating organic food because it’s healthy for the brain and mind because if you don’t have your mind you don’t have nothing

  • Anybody who believes this crap that Diet Coke makes you fat or it releases insulin in your body ot tricks your body bla bla bla is retarded. And so is the person saying those things. Diet Coke HAVE ZERO CALORIES No sugar = No insulin response = no weight gain. People like you really piss me off.

  • Explain how I lost over 100+ pounds while drinking Coke Zero lol This is total bs. Its what fat ppl chose what to eat for fatty foods with their diet sodas. I dieted with Coke Zero and like I said. This is nonsense.

  • Ok being lean and healthy are very important. But the fact is:: this guy and others like him need to get a hobby other than devoting their lives to looking like that. Super lame!! Is this your way of getting women? Are you that insecure that you need to have more muscles than everyone else in the room? What is it?

  • We very seldom drink a whole can of soda with a meal, so we both
stopped drinking soda from 12 oz (355 ML) cans and now drink
16.9 oz (500 ml) bottles of soda so we can put the twist caps back on,
and put half back in the fridge, so we can finish the soda the next day.
Most people feel obligated to finish a can, once the pop tab is opened.
Reusing the twist caps keeps a bottle of soda from going “flat”.
I tend to drink more instant coffee (with milk & no sugar)
and fruit juice to further reduce my consumption of sugar.

  • Just avoid soda as much as possible, but remember it’s one a million things that aren’t perfect and will have overdone cancer, early death warnings, questionable studies, and conflicting results that make people distrust science.

  • I disagree with the idea that no one needs diet soda.I know someone who has digestive issues. The only thing that works for them (they’ve tried tons of meds) is to drink large amounts of artificial sweeteners. Their gastro knows about it and approves. I myself drink diet soda because it has caffeine and is acidic, both of which treat some of my medical issues.

  • Hi Mr. Thomas I drink a bit of french vanilla coffe-mate daily on my morning coffe and I started working out, can the french vanilla coffe mate affect my results? should I drink my coffe black? please advice

  • What your saying is so true. I started to drink diet soda because I like to drink something cold with caffeine in the mornings. After drinking diet cokes and Diet Pepsi’s for over 8 years I can no longer lose weight how I use to be able to. It’s like my metabolism is out of whack. I now have diabetes, weight gain, sleep apnea with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am slowly trying to wean myself off. I also find I get major headaches and migraines. It’s sad what our government allows.

  • Food is not sustaining the body itself, breathing is, exercise makes you more alive, starvation and anorexia are the opposite of fitness. There are DARK FORCES in the universe trying to keep breatharianism out of the public eye. PLEASE people get your heads together look into alex collier, jericho sunfire, wiley brooks, there is something BIG COMING like Atlantis returned big, figure out what you want to live for and WHO IS RUNNING your mind, there are snakes in human skin, watch out.

  • From one psychologist to onother, thank you so much for exposing this. A lot of people now a days rely on medications and vitamins disregarding the benefits of healthier nutrition. The “healthy body healthy mind” have been forgotten. Let’s go back during the time of Adam and Eve where the only food are vegetables and fruits, that’s how are bodies are designed for.

  • Can’t they control for things such as previous health problems? I assume they would. If we know increased sugar is bad, and then reducing sugar intake and replacing it with something else is getting worse results, I think that’s a useful observation.

  • Thomas, this is the 1st time I’ve seen you or your posts, i’m a soft drink abuser(!!) enjoy both diet & full strength and as a 52yo with a belly i’m going to have to change, hopefully its not too late, cheers from DownUnder

  • The history of nutritional epidemiology (i.e. using observational studies of populations to draw conclusions about diet) is an area of science which is the most replete with one contradictory finding after another. Given its poor history, it amazes me that anyone still blindly believes every single alarmist story that the media propounds about X food causing Y problem. I don’t blame the public for being bewildered. One day saturated fat is the devil, and the next day it is deemed innocuous. One day dietary cholesterol is an archenemy of humanity, and the next day it is exonerated. What is a layperson to do with the litany of studies, any one of which can be cited to support which ever dietary paradigm you fancy? Ultimately, as a benchmark for determining truth from sensationalist click bait, I use the evolutionary litmus test. If a food is vilified by the latest study I ask the question have we been eating this food for millennia, without incident? If the answer is yes, then the study demonizing that food is probably using poorly done epidemiology, conflating relative for absolute risk, using poorly controlled and unreliable food questionnaires, or it is not taking into account healthy user bias. Put simply, when a study implicates an ancient food for disease that has only become prominent in modern society, that study should not be believed.

  • Everybody needs to go to courthouse and place a lawsuit against Rumsfeld, the Republican party, Coke Pepsi mcdonalds for selling defective product.

  • !! Hello everyone. I want to raise awareness about mental health issues. I’ve made a video about it for a contest, in which if I win I get to participate of the Youth Leadership Forum in New York. Could you please help me by liking it and sharing so that others can view it too? I need the most likes to become a finalist. I think my video could help people out there so please give it a try.❤️ Thank you

  • Whole foods plant based oil free is the only diet proven to reduce coronary heart disease. We see the benefits of decent nutritional with our physical health and with the gut playing such a central role it’s no surprise just how essential good nutrition is. I have a connective joint tissue disorder which includes depression in its umbrella of symptoms. Whereas I see others really struggle with this condition and resorting to a slew of conventional medications I’m proud to say on a vegan diet I do really well and avoid all meds including the amitriptyline and strong antidepressants given to me for my condition. ( I took one when I twisted my ankle and felt like a zombie the next day). The sad part is the meds interact and then people end up on more meds to counteract the negative side effects of the first meds. My youngest son had hyperactive issues, a 2 second memory and was hard work as a youngster. At no point did I consider ritalin for him even though there were financial incentives to my benefits intake at the time. My sons mental and physical health was worth more to me than that and luckily I knew that these meds are based on amphetamines! It really is no surprise these poor children dont get better. As for my youngest son, hes doing great, has no more issues and is in university. I wonder how he would have turned out if hooked on ritalin now. As for fish oils you can go direct to the source of those nutrients in the form of spirulina to cut out the negative aspects of fish oil as all oils, bar a little cbd oil are detrimental to the blood flow including olive oil. I’m not perfect. I still use marg, eat white bread ect, but I can say that medicine free is a wonderful feeling and cutting out animal products helped heal my gut issues while cutting out dairy really helped my joints. All a welcome surprise as my change was an ethics based decision. The better health that occurred as a result is a welcome added extra.

  • The adventist message has this information since the last century! But nobody listen. So, nothing new. And they got it guess from where? From God through His word: the bible.

  • All that based on correlation research. I’m going on a leap of faith here saying that a good amount of diet soda drinkers are overweight. Garbage info.

  • Hey bud I enjoy the videos that you post which are extremely informative and easy to follow along with! I am on a mission right now to lose at the least 75 more lbs. I am currently 6′-3″ and 280lbs which I’m proud of at this moment because I was 324lbs. Two months ago. So I appreciate the information on the diet tips! I just need to get an exercise routine now

  • 12:00 “we’re still in early days in the science as far as understanding who responds to what diet and nutrients and why and what doses and for what issues” (I’m paraphrasing)
Basically it’s this idea that we’re playing with “natural” and relatively safe things so let’s just keep at it and try to help people.
    Which is fine.
But don’t cross the line of pretending to know more than you do about the hard science of it.
You should be starting every talk, paper, interview, book, etc with this admission.

  • Hey man, I am going to quit diet soda after watching this video. I have reason to believe that you have changed my life with this video.

  • He claims that he’s a doctor or a professor I’m not ether one of those but what I do know what he dose not know is yes for some people not all who live off of diet soda is gonna have a stroke or a heart attack. What he didn’t mention as a doctor that it’s really all have to do with caffeine in the soda now every one knows that too much caffeine may kill some people plus it depends on your health condition. And as for diet soda it’s really good for diabetics but don’t believe diet soda is gonna make you more hungry it’s all in the mind cause after you finish a meal and wash it down with a diet soda.Once your full and control your mind for not having any other cravings you’ll be fine.

  • Honestly i think it just depends on the individual if Diet Soda makes them fat. I drink Diet soda have been for a while now and i drink about 1 to 2 cans a day and i still managed to lose 40 pounds and got down to 8% body fat. It hasn’t affected my mood or my motivation, however I’ve always been a very highly motivated person as for the soda make you crave food cause after all thats what is making people fat they drink the diet soda then crave sugar foods. Get some fucking control over yourself, yes its easier said then done but it can be achieved or if your gonna drink diet soda have it before you eat something or if you know you love sugary foods just don’t touch the stuff. But thats just My opinion i lost weight/fat while consuming 2 diet sodas a day and a lot of other people have too.

  • 1. As I tell my students: correlation doesn’t mean causation, but it doesn’t rule out causation, either. Correlation shows that there is some sort of relation but doesn’t indicate direction. 2. There is a publication bias in professional journals. Studies showing a significant outcome are more likely to be published than those with no significant outcome.

  • I’ve been agreeing with this viewpoint for a very long time, it would seem like common sense and it is, but even still people are either into it or they’re not, it needs to be part of the mental health field

  • Bodybuilders who eat much powder with fake sugar, you ruin you body, you look good now when you are young, but will pay with diabetes rest of the life.
Kids with ADHD/ADD, your body goes crazy with fake sugar.
People with mental disorders, your brain goes crazy if you eat fake sugar.

  • I drink diet soda but I use it as a way to keep myself happy on days I don’t eat. Im not fat. I also smoke weed. You can accomplish goals without the perfect lifestyle. Drinking booze is the biggest hindrance when trying to get in shape. Take it from a ex fatty, who has become a hot hotty in the last few years.

  • Unrelated to Sodas, but about this 1:51 “Scientists need to publish in order to survive” argument is often used by climate crisis deniers. i.e. they claim that climate change is “in fashion” and allegedly makes funding easier etc. Im just trying to distinguish for myself, when its ok to question research and when to trust in it.

  • You might as well say cigarettes cause weight loss and find a study to back it up, because diet soda will have an insanely low chance (if at all) of making you put on extra weight if you’re eating under maintenance, it’s all about total caloric intake

  • Okay, but it doesn’t help on its own with me. I can’t just go off my medication and try the new diet. I mean it helps to add it to medication and all. I have ADHD and severe anxiety and you can manage it but I don’t agree when she says “Treat” autism/ADHD. People still need therapy/medication and better diets.

  • TED would have flagged Galileo for presenting ideas that fell outside of curatorial guidelines. This “controversial” approach is as old as Hipocrates. Our medical science is currently rediscovering the wheel. Screw you TED and your flagging.

  • 6 years since this talk and things are no better. Our food is worse, our diet is worse and from the state of the US we are as mentally ill as ever especially the leadership.

  • Bipolar disorder is almost always misdiagnosed originally as depression, which is why kids diagnosed with depression will tend ton”convert” to bipolar disorder.

Researchers need to stay in their own lane.

  • I don’t like the taste of diet soda. To me artificial sweeteners taste horrible and I detect them without knowing in advance that I have a diet drink/food in front of me.

  • I work as a doctor and see first-hand the unhealthy habits of people in the psychiatric ward where I am doing my residency. I hope that in the future the government will invest into healthy nutritious foods for our patients with more focus on exercise / movement.

  • diet soda also stimulates your bladder muscles more frequently so you have to go more often even when your bladder is only slightly filled. I have been drinking diet soda for years and have started to notice that i go to the bathroom very often and that i get this feeling to go shortly after i alreaady went. well, im giving up the stuff and just drinking green tea, unsweetened. I read it takes 2 weeks to see a difference, hopefully so because its very annoying to have to go pee so often….

  • When I was a kid (50 years ago) soda was usually consumed as a special treat (or at the very least, a mixer for alcoholic beverages). People drank water if they felt thirsty. And at meals people drank water, juice, milk, coffee, or tea. (Why do they always give you a glass of water in restaurants?) And soda was prohibited in most schools there were no vending machines, and if you brought a can of soda with your lunch they’d take it away from you. Now it seems that the only liquid most people consume is soda, whether sweeened with artificial sweeteners or with sugar. I have no idea what might be the cause, other than aggressive marketing. The sugary versions seem to be responsible for the “obesity epidemic”, and only the gods know what those weird-tasting chemicals do.

  • People are misdiagnosed all the time I order to just give them a pill to “fix” their problems.
My mom has been diagnosed with bipolar and prescribed medication for years but she is actually a person with Borderline Personality Disorder. Bipolar is increasingly and incredibly a misdiagnosis for a multitude of mental issues.
I just think her data should have accounted for the MANY people whom are misdiagnosed.

  • Wow lovely talk.I invite the wonderful lady to come to India &study our ancient system of medicine Ayurveda. Here food is prescribed according to body types. We have centuries old recepies for certain health paremeters

  • my guess is that soda diet or otherwise is not good for you, but this video is bull shit if you think that cutting out soda is going to be all that you need to do in your diet to remove fat and not cause you to have a lot of other health issues. listening to ANYTHING on youtube and buying into it without further research can be dangerous!

one more thing, have not had soda in years and ZERO reduction in fat on my body. therefore, living proof that you video is bull shit. Belly Fat is not just from soda.

  • The problem with people drinking Diet Soda is what they’re eating with it. Diet Soda by itself isn’t bad for you. It’s what they eat along with it.

  • Just curious could these numbers be a bit misrepresented? I say this because most people (at least that I know) only drink diet pops because they’re overweight or unhealthy. That being said, is it probable that these people were already at a high risk level for the problems you have mentioned well before they started drinking diet pop?

  • What jails are full of is sugar. It the gateway drug. Addiction’s teacher. ADHD maker. The edge of violence. Our clear thoughts are are fogged by addiction’s focus.

  • THANK YOU. The correlation/causation thing in regards to diet soda has bugged me for years. Especially since diet soda tends to be the go to for diabetics, prediabetic. At least as an alternative to full sugar sodas.

  • +Thomas DeLauer You got some points, but I disagree on several of them. Why? Becauause my weight one year ago was 220 pounds, and a BF of 16%, I started my diet, BUT drank pepsi max each single day, for a year, give or take a couple of days, with a cheatday every friday. And in one year, I went down to 182 pounds, and a BF of 6%
I did this while drinking diet soda each day, and a cheatday every friday. And if what you’re saying here is true, (and I understood it correctly) then this should be close to impossible.

For the record, I only consumed my diet soda with food, I never drank it to quench the thirst.

    Hope for your reply.

    Best regards.

  • I healed my depression by eating fresh and mostly this 8 years ago. I did not know that science supported this but tried it and it worked and I felt better than ever. 8 years later I am still thriving and have never looked back

  • Nutrition is CRUCIAL. 10 years of treatment resistant psychotic depression, I’ve been evaluated by all kinds of professors, top doctors,no one ever mentioned nutrition. I owe 90 % of my recovery to diet and supplements, and doctors laughed when i mentioned it. I talk extensively about my regimen on my channel, if you are interested.

  • Thank you for speaking on this topic! Though I definitely want to say that there are important times and places for medication, counseling, and traditional treatments for mental illness, having been magnesium deficient, but misdiagnosed in my teens as bipolar, and then later developing more mental health symptoms as I began to need supplementation for other vitamins like b12 and D due to increasing malabsorption, that also greatly resolved with appropriate treatment, I really appreciate this take. There is not a separation between the mind and the body.

  • The EXACT same issue is experienced with metabolic disease like heart disease, dementia and diabetes. ALL easily REVERSED with Diet and exercise, but all “scientifically-informed” treatments reliant on medication to manage symptoms. The pharmaceutical industry has a chokehold on our health which is only concerned with $$$ by keeping us ill.

  • Seems like there should be disclosure ot the exact MICRONUTRIENTS THAT WERE USED AND DOSING.

ALSO if we are talking about deficient individuals, then adding one nutrient that is deficient in many cases will have no effect or could even worsen the outcome as the body may have went into a starvation mode/hibernating and adding the 1/10 deficiencies will turn the machinery back on, when there is no energy to run the machine causing serious harm.
Probably do not want to take folate unless sure you do not have a B12 deficiency.

  • Well That’s Scary About Getting Diabetes. I’m On A Water Fast. Day 11 And I Decided To Drink A Diet Soda Becasue It Has 0 Calories And Small Amount Of Sodium. Boy Did I Come Alive And Motivated. I Thought The Label Was Misleading And the Soda Had Calories But It’s The Fake Sugar That Triggered Insulin. I Will Say I Went From Laying In Bed Feeling Extremely Tired All Day To Getting Up And Doing All Kinds Of Work Around The House. Truly Insane How Much Energy And How Much Better I Felt After Drinking S Diet Soda… But The Insulin Resistance Developed Over Time Has Me Terrified. I Never Drink Soda I’ve Always Been Drinking Water And Eating Salads 247. I’ve Lost 75Lbs In 4 Months And Can Keep The Weight Off.

  • Notice the words may be and could. I say this is PURE BUTTCHEEKS. Stop watching liberal news you’ll loose 30lbs to. aspartame is just 2 plant derived amino acids that are tightly bound by carbon or something of that nature. completely harmless. It has no chain of command. They are naturally occurring in the human body testicles and such. can’t cause cancer. Can’t make you crave sweetness unless your body was addicted to sugar in the first place. That is also a flaw not stated in this study. Sugar is toxic in it self. 1 gram of sugar is your daily value. To much flaw with this these scientists may work for the food industry to some compacity also. BUTTCHEEKS.

  • An excellent talk and nutrition’s affect on mental health discussions have been around for a long time! It’s doctors who prescribe drugs because it’s easier for them ie saves time re consultations. Meanwhile good for parents to be educated around this, but they too are often under pressure time wise etc……so priorities are skewed in favor of the medical profession’s approach! We need to allow for more ‘time’ from all walks of life to allow adequate assessments and care to be provided for mental health issues. Time along with nutrition are the solution I believe.

  • Why would you flag this talk? You are just like the doctors who ridiculed the doctor that advocated washing hands. I am flagging you for attempting to halt progress, and upholding the status quo that is having disastrous results and increasing mental illness all over the world!

  • The clue is in the name. People who go on a diet are usually people who need to go on a diet. Obesity increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

  • I agree in that regard that I want to highly reduce my diet coke intake but more because it is just a chemical concoction that cannot be healthy. But the mentioned arguments are way too vague and contradict other people’s real life experiments like measuring your blood sugar after drinking diet coke and such.

  • god bless you my friend. I am a 53 year old guy with type 1 diabetes. I am now coming to realize that diet soda is really bad. Thank you for taking it home for me.

  • Hi, this comment isn’t related to the video, I just did go to the newest SPS video so I could get reply, I’m 14 year old and I’m trying to train abs, biceps and triceps, the fastest as possible, could some of you give me tips: Should I take protein supplements etc what exercices I should do, thanks:D

  • Ok so I wanted to try this so I fasted for 24 hours and tested my blood glucose. It was 203. Yup high I know. Then I drank 10oz of diet coke caffeine free nothing else. Again 20 minutes later I tested my blood glucose and it was at 283, much higher jist 20 minutes ago. I’m guessing it depends on each person but I don’t see why it would but be carefully. After 6 months of fasting at different lengths such as 24 hours to as long as 20 days I was down to my correct weight and my blood glucose at a fasted state was 80 and after a normal meal stained stable at 110. Diabetes reversed thanks to Dr. Jason Fung.

  • Also if diet soda caused insulin spikes drinking it fasted would cause you to pass out or die. Done it a trillion times and still alive and feeling great.

  • I’ll be shopping with my girlfriend and grab a diet mountain dew and EVERY SINGLE TIME she’ll tell me how “bad” diet is, and can never give me a reason other than that it’s just “a fact,” and that she’ll never change her mind. Babe, I love you with all my heart and my soul, and I’d do anything for youbut you’re an idiot

  • Just reading the book “Fast Food Genocide” by Fuhrman, M.D. This doctor goes into great detail about what you are talking about. You can guess by the title that there are corporations that know but don’t care.

  • Psylosobine mushrooms are best way to treat heavy depression…read about it, watch videos about it. Learn and then use -not misuse.

  • I stopped drinking soda when I realized I don’t really even like it that much. No point in wasting those calories and sugar intake.

  • My doctor said it is not my fault, that there is nothing I can do or could have done.
I mean he has good intentions saying that but I believe I can make it with healthy eating.
And you can too if you believe in yourself!

  • Humans are evolutionary creatures. We never ate artificial foods until the last 100 plus years or so, but to make the argument that synthetic foods are OK because everything is a chemical is beyond absurd.
Humans did not evolve to eat synthetic chemicals, period.
Although I agree that a ingesting an artificial sweetener on occasion is probably not going to hurt you. But academically speaking, it is not smart to declare man made foods completely safe.
Crisco, margarine, vegetable oils and artificial sweeteners are not food. They are man made chemicals.
Humans NEVER ate any of these polymers until just over a century ago.
That’s tens of thousands of generations of people who evolved to eat real food.
Now with technological advances, we start introducing man-made chemicals into the food supply. How is an organic creature, who did not evolve to eat a man-made chemical going to handle this chemical?
I know people who are seriously addicted to artificial sweeteners. I know people who drink a gallon a day of diet drinks, and have been doing so for years. Would their constant consumption of man-made chemicals have a negative effect on their health?
The same thing goes for man-made medications like statins or beta blockers.
Another argument I have is that people seem to argue their point if they are biased toward something they like.
Coffee is good for you, even though it effects your nervous system, makes you irritable, hard to relax. Is it possible the research is biased because so many people love to drink coffee?
Same thing goes for alcohol and artificial sweeteners. Is the research biased because people like these products?
A good scientist looks at the facts with an unbiased eye.
I do believe this channel is trying to make diet drinks seem safe probably because he loves to drink them.
To me, evolution says artificial sweeteners may not be safe, especially if ingested everyday in mass quantities for years…

  • Great talk And I think it is important to teach things like this and generally about the reseRch on lifestyle and health in schools

  • I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11. Before that I was healthy drinking regular soda. I’ve had diet soda for 6 years then suddenly age 17 developed peripheral arterial disease in the legs. I am now age 37 and can hardly walk a few blocks without feeling lower leg pain after walking a few blocks. Thank you diet soda for ruining my life.

  • I’d like to point out that the people who “developed” bipolar disorder from taking anti depressants were almost certainly bipolar beforehand and misdiagnosed as having major depression

  • The way he found out about it was the fact that the ward with ONLY midwives but no doctors had much lower rates of childbed fever… the women knew to wash their damn hands. But much of the time (I’m talking back 1000s of years) women’s knowledge was disregarded by medical community and women couldn’t even train or practice medicine.

  • Great speach. Since many years i am talking micronutrients to manage my chronic illnesses. Unfortunately medocal doctors don’t advise their patients to go for them.
