An Athlete’s Guide to Protein Powder. by Lori Russell, MS RD CSSD. November 14, 2018. 1 Comment.

Most of us have a tub of protein powder sitting in the pantry; for some it’s tucked away in a corner collecting dust, but for many athletes, that container is front and center and used frequently. While it is easy to consume enough protein. Here’s a quick guide to using protein powder to help you meet your goals. First: How much do you actually need? It’s always been a general rule of thumb that recreational athletes need about 0.8 to.

Those taking part in recreational athletics need 1.1 to 1.4 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight. Competitive athletes need 1.2 to 1.4 grams, and those involved in ultra-endurance. Protein Powder #1: Whey Isolate And this one is whey protein isolate. Whey protein isolate on a gram per gram basis is the purest form of protein you can get. It has to be at least 90% pure protein.

Their protein powder is a whey and casein blend. Ingredients are a blend of milk protein isolate, casein protein, whey protein concentrate, sodium chloride, natural and artificial flavors, guar gum, two artificial sweeteners – sucralose (Splenda) and acesulfame potassium, and vanilla beans. However, plant-based protein powders that contain a blend of sources such as pea, soy, brown rice, or hemp will still provide adequate BCAAs and are a viable option for athletes that avoid dairy. Plant-based protein powders often have enzymes added to help increase the rate of absorption and digestion.

Protein powder is not a performance enhancer. It does not acutely improve strength, speed, power, stamina, or any other marker of performance. It is nothing at all like steroids.

In fact, an individual who is working out can take it and possibly see no results. Bone broth protein is one of the best protein powder choices for those seeking a complete, nutritional protein supplement. In addition, it’s almost definitely the best protein powder for those sticking to.

Whey concentrate is the most popular form of protein powder, because it’s easy to find, mixes well, and gets absorbed quickly. It is usually between 70-80 percent protein, with the rest of the mass coming. However, some athletes, bodybuilders and other people with a commitment to strength training choose to use protein supplements (like ATHLEAN RX-2) for ease of ensuring they hit their daily protein targets.

List of related literature:

Protein Intake and the Athlete Athletes don’t need protein powders or amino acid supplements to meet the protein demands of athletic performance.46 Their best protein sources are high-quality protein foods, including legumes, low-fat dairy products, egg whites, lean beef and pork, chicken, turkey, and fish.

During the last decade, the notion that both strength/power and endurance athletes, as well the general active population (including men and women), require greater protein consumption than the current RDA recommendation of 0.8 g/kg of body weight per day in healthy adults is becoming generally accepted [12, 13].

  • You charge $3 for a serving of creatine when I can buy perfectly good creatine-creatine monohydrate, one ingredient-for $0.10. That’s a 30x mark up. Basically, it’s the difference between always making your coffee at home vs always buying it at Starbucks. I can’t say that being poorer is good for one’s long-term health.

  • Hey I turn 15 this month I’m on my high school powerlifting team and I want to take my workouts to the next level. I have about a year of consistent workout experience. I eat literally anything and everything that will fill me up. I’m thinking about starting creatine 5 grams a day but idk what I should do. Any tips would be nice.

  • anybody recommends soy protein for a small woman wanting to build some muscle, mostly legs? i’m already thin but i need muscle and definition.:))) thanks

  • Lifestyle…from 14-40 range dramatically.
Make sure that your not taking supplements believing “an increase in supplementation makes up for a lack of time”…big waste of money!
… however, supplementing to “enhance your precious time to train”…
“It’s necessary for any long term (lifetime) success!”

  • That moment when you lay on the floor demolished after an Athlean programmed workout and you realize “Train until you die my friends”

wasn’t motivation, but a command… I knew ye all well.

  • this is exactly the video and honesty i was looking for, i am not ready for supplements. thanks for your help on a path to a better way to get where i want to go.

  • Guys please read this, i need help!

But the cup has 90 ml.
Should i add a full cup of should i add only half of it?

  • Hi.. Jaret. I am from India and these products are not available here. Please recommend me some available here and have no doping issue.

  • hey jaret campisi, I went online to purchase the supplements that you showed and it says there was a sale for a bundle type deal and it showed in the cart that the price was 140, but as I went to check out it totaled up the price to about 200. Any input?

  • I’m 14 and I think I’ve genetically reached my best and I was thinking should I buy whey isolate I was worried it might slow my mentaolism down and actually slow my performance in sports aswell

  • I went to the gnc protein calculator and it said to eat my eggs with a piece of toast and margarine, margarine isn’t even a natural fat it’s man made, shame on you GNC.

  • Lol, said the true finally someone sponsored u. That’s why your talking so much about this protein. I thought you liked ON protein. Also extend Bcaa are the best

  • Nick Sounded like he was in a washing machine could have done with better quality video not a Skype call. Found it really hard to listen to

  • Evening chaps, long time listener from your first episode in fact, I and I think most of your fans find your Q+A section immensely useful, and feel it would be a good Idea to have a separate podcast thats just has a collection of just various Questions from over the years, otherwise your evolution has been impressive and look forward to your continued success.

  • With the right diet, none of those supplements are needed until your age starts to interfere with absorption. If you’re 19 and loading on supplements, you’re wasting your money. I trained 6 days a week in wrestling and judo, squizing in gym workouts from 17 to 21 and ate relative crap (compared to my immaculate diet now). Full 8 pack shredded 180 lb 6’2 frame. Now at 37 I work out 3 days a week and run 3 days a week and it’s all downhill:(

  • I have 7% body fat. 30 year old male. Have a hard time bulking up. Are testosterone boosters a good idea? I have a toned body, but cant seem to bulk. Im 6″3, 180 lbs.

  • People think protein shakes are so good for you when all it basically is, is powered puss that’s right you’re drinking growth hormones that is meant for a baby cow.. That’s why diary makes you fat maybe? Stop falling for this marketing trick, protein makes you fat and that’s why they tell you to cut calories when you drink them. Eat and drink tons of fruit because no one ever called a vegan fat.

  • so I’m a student and I work out for about 30 minuites in the evening, I don’t really know when would be best to take a protein shake

  • 5:09 on forward: IN MY HUMBLE OPINION the most profound quote in all of YouTube nutritional/fitness/supplements/etc ‘hard love’ hurts! In the long run helps!

  • I appreciate you want to sell your supplements, but there is absolutely NO need for bcaa or protein supplements if eating correctly, majority of competing bodybuilders know the benefits of eating calories from real food instead of supplements, off season if you can’t physically eat enough protein to gain lean muscle mass at the rate you want, then maybe have a shake after your meal, but absolutely no need for bcaa, bcaa supplements are one of the industry’s biggest scams, if you eat enough high quality protein from a variety of sources, bcaa’s are a complete waste of money, that would be better spend on extra food

  • I have heard that cycling creatine is necessary. When should you take it and when should you have a break. I am a track athlete(100m/200m) and in my home country Estonia season starts roughly in the end of May and ends in August. In the coming season my biggest competion will be the U20 European Championships which are held in the end of July. Last season I started taking monohydrate in March and continued all the way to July. So my question is again, when should I start taking the creatine? Greetings from Europe and thanks in advance, keep up the good work!

  • Let me send them a pic of me after 2 months I gain easily without protein powder and I just started and I can’t describe it in text it’s insane
Overdosing protein is good it’s a backup if you train extra

  • Thanks so much for this video, I’ve recently started resistant training and the amount of protein powder varieties really left me feeling overwhelmed. Great job!

  • Whey metabolizes like a carb, big insulin reaction, and can promote systemic inflammation. And most protein powders are made by marketing companies using co-packers who have no quality control. Watch the movie “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” to get a sense of what a joke the supplement industry is. The testing he quotes is thoughtful and very important to buying a legitimate protein supplement. Well done piece here.

  • Jeff you need to get back to normal body fat levels like in this video! You look so much healthier man. Too low body fat just makes you look aged and worn out.

  • You missed the rest of the first video where he explains how fasting had a HUGE impact on his hormone levels and there are multiple studies that show how great fasting is for you NR levels and hormone levels.

  • Jaret I started running middle distance in grade 8-10, but now I’ve moved to a new country and I wanted to go into sprinting. I’ve watched a few of your vids and they’ve really helped me, but I may not change my current diet as my parents don’t support dieting specifically for a sport, and I’m not doing all too well financially, is there any other ways I could become a better athlete?

  • Jeff, what is your opinion on CAFFINE FREE bang energy?

I sometimes use that as a creatine supplement for working out, mainly because it seems to work for me, but is it actually healthy? Should I be using something else?

Please note, I’m asking specifically about the one with no caffine. I do not like the idea of 300 mg of caffine in my system before or during, or after workouts. I’ll stick with 0 caffine.

  • The problem with most protein powders is that they contain asulfame potassium. For those of you who don’t know, asulfame potassium is one of those lovely cancer causing ingredients. • THIS IS NOT TRUE AT ALL!!! Infant baby formula contains whey protein and if a infant that barely came outa of mommy’s tummy can can take whey protein, why can’t teens take it. Ofc they can take it but watch out for brands and how much you take

  • With the right diet, none of those supplements are needed until your age starts to interfere with absorption. If you’re 19 and loading on supplements, you’re wasting your money. • they say it’s bad but the number 1 ingredient for baby milk is whey protein but nothing happens to fragile babys and then if your a teenager it’s bad (such people say these days)

  • 200 grams is very little for an elite athlete doing all those sets and reps. Unless he is very short.. Not sure about his height. But still I expected at least 300 grams.

  • Can you please do a in-depth video on how to do dumbell split squats? I an trying to grow my quads equally, but I am struggling to get this exercise down.

  • I used to buy and use Twinlab Ultra fuel, primarily for hiking/backpacking. Unfortunately they don’t make it anymore. It contained complex carbohydrates. It also contained lots of calories, vitamins, electrolytes etc. It could’ve been best described as Gatorade on steroids. It wasn’t your typical protein and calorie weight gain/bodybuilding supplement. It didn’t contain protein at all, I don’t think. But it was great for long duration type exercises like backpacking and running etc, because it boosted low blood sugar, provided supplemental calories, replenished electrolytes and rehydrated you. Plus vitamins. I used it on the Appalachian trail 3 times, and NOT just as a ‘recovery drink’. I mixed it in a Nalgene bottle and drank it throughout the day.
Do you know of any other products that fit that description(even if they include some protein) and does Endurox r4 fit that bill? Thanks

  • Step 1: Go to amazon
    Step 2: Type Protein Powder
Step 3: Sort Price: Low to High
Step 4: Pick one with lower carb/sugar that doesn’t F*cK you in pricing

Step 5: spend the money you saved on preworkout to which you follow the above steps except this time just pick one with beta alanine, at least 150 mg of caffeine, and the coolest bro chemical like “Bro-drogen-Di-Sexy-ide” or something like that.

Oh and also get your creatine as well, all for the price of the “uber bro-grass fed-free range-ultra vegan-left wing- #HER2 protein.”

    😀 enjoy

  • Solid video. I appreciate your attention to labels, quality control and third party approval. Dysregulatuon of the supplement industry is a huge problem.

I would like to point however that the general rule of thumb for protein intake is.7-1.2g per kg of body weight.

Also, although whey is the gold standard when it comes to protein type, namely for its quick digestibility, dairy’s inherent inflammatory effects would make it a counterintuitive selection. With inflammation being the a root cause in many chronic illnesses and ailments, aside from easier digestibility and arguably higher leucine content, whey in general seems to be a sub optimal choice altogether.

All that said, since we don’t quite neeeeeed supplemental protein to meet the moderate protein demands of nearly all humans, I think that it is wiser to adhere to your very first tip and get your protein from whole, fibrous, foods.

And if you need supplemental protein, I think it’s wiser to opt plant, for the sake of lower inflammation. The body is a smart and intuitive organism, it will digest the plant protein efficiently by way of its biochemical pathways. Not to mention, fiber!

I appreciate your consideration of my views. Thanks for reading!

  • There are a bunch of research that shows multivitamis and BCAAs don’t do anything, also whey protein increases insulin, also monster and red bull has basically no caffeine, you should take 150-200 grams of caffeine before a workout and those drinks were way under the limit, i take caffeine pills instead

  • What are your takes on Cricked Protein? I have seen reviews that comment it’s really awesome in protein quantities & very high quality.

  • I would not personally recommend multi-vitamins to everyone. If you have a high dietary variation, you are probably getting most of your vitamins already. And some vitamins can be harmful in too large a dose. The most common side effect of a vitamin overdose is nausea.
It’s far better to find out what you’re deficient in, try to fix that in your diet, and if you can’t, then add specific vitamin supplements.

  • Hei Jaret, the multivitamins you take, i ea e wondering what color does the opti men pack has? Is it green or black? I wan t to but it but idk what s the meaning of the colors. Thanks

    Coffee.

The rest is bullshit, what I noticed is most guys with shitty physiques take the most supplements. FACTS.

  • Are there supplements you shouldn’t mix? I’ve had some friends tell me you shouldn’t mixing things such as glutamine and creatine? Is that a real thing and/or are there other supplements that shouldn’t be taken together/within a certain amount of time

  • Guess I gotta start taking some supplements! LOL. I work out and train for endurance sports. I’m 40, and I’m just now starting to truly learn about the benefits of creatine!

  • since protein is just a by product of the dairy industry, and turns into amino acids, surely it’s better just to load up on amino acids instead?

  • I am 29, I am starting to take whey protein now. I am very regular with my workouts and I eat healthy. Can I just continue this supplement forever? Or is there a time or age I need to stop at?

  • I have heard that cycling creatine is necessary. When should you take it and when should you have a break. I am a track athlete(100m/200m) and in my home country Estonia season starts roughly in the end of May and ends in August. In the coming season my biggest competion will be the U20 European Championships which are held in the end of July. Last season I started taking monohydrate in March and continued all the way to July. So my question is again, when should I start taking the creatine? Greetings from Europe and thanks in advance, keep up the good work!

  • Hello there I have a question. I’d be happy if you answer.

I’m a sportsman since 2008!and I started with bodybuilding first. And then I kept doing bodybuilding until 2013. Then I started Muay Thai and I used bcaa, proteins. After 2015 I stopped taking supplements and I got injuries. I used to take PRO GAINER, BCAA 1:4:4 I guess it was that. It was pill form. So my question is that since I stopped taking these supplements I got injuries. But I just wonder were they really helping me to avoid injuries or it’s just inside my head? And what other supplements do you suggest for a combat athlete? I mean to avoid injuries and have fast recovery? THANK YOU!

  • I am 29, I am starting to take whey protein now. I am very regular with my workouts and I eat healthy. Can I just continue this supplement forever? Or is there a time or age I need to stop at?

  • That moment when you lay on the floor demolished after an Athlean programmed workout and you realize “Train until you die my friends”

wasn’t motivation, but a command… I knew ye all well.

  • the caffeine in jack3d had nothing to do with people getting flagged on drug tests. It was the 1’3 DMAA in it. That was the stuff that actually made you feel like you were on crack….
The caffeine content was actually pretty low (per scoop) compared to a lot of other pre’s out there today.

  • Can someone tell me,if I’m bulking or just normally working out and taking whey or creatine, what happens if after few months I keep working out,but stop putting the protein supplements in my shakes?

  • Hey Cassey,

I been following your videos for a while now and as a big fan of yours, I cant help but be a bit disappointed at this video. I’m just not sure how safe these powders and supplements are and quite frankly I have trouble trusting these companies and the ingredients they add to their products is questionable. I believe in getting most nutrients from foods rather then these powders. Again, very disappointed to the point it makes me question your integrity.

  • I need 81 grams of fat and I take Vega one it is a complete protein and is amazing and comes in different flavours! It’s vegan!! It’s the best in my opinion:)

  • I respect Jeff for all his work but I don’t agree at all with this video.
    My take on it:
If you want to gain muscle, you don’t need any supplements whatsoever. Workout regulary have at least 3-5 meals a day ( good and healthy various meals ) and you will gain, what your body is able to get on muscle mass. In a matter of 2-5 month you will already have good results. Rely on old school body building/ callesthenic workout plans and everyone reading this will gain beautiful, cut muscle mass. Period

  • I’m so new at this… so it’s okay to take protein powder within 30 mins of a workout, casein powder before bed, and when do I take creatine powder? before a workout? is it safe to take all 3 powders in 1 day? THANKS whoever answers

  • What does the protein powder taste like in the video? I’m a picky eater and I want to know if I would be able to drink the protein shake without throwing up

  • I eat a healthy well balanced diet around 3000-3500kcal and sometimes get bloated. I run too and want to get stronger and more powerful. I’m skinny even when I eat to a point of being full. Any good supplements for that?

  • Wow
85% of all people who have full time jobs is reality here… have no time to train or eat like that when you have to make a living for yourself

  • HEY,, I AM FROM INDIA AND I WATCH MANY CHANNELS REGARDING SUPPLEMENTS SUGGESTIONS BUT YOUR EXPLANATION WAY IS SUPERB AND I GOT SOME MORE DETAILS REGARDING SUPPLEMENTS,,THANKS…

  • The problem with most protein powders is that they contain asulfame potassium. For those of you who don’t know, asulfame potassium is one of those lovely cancer causing ingredients. Look for a protein powder that is naturally sweetened. I use Optimum Nutrition: Naturally Flavored Whey. I’m not sure if GNC offers one.

  • the caffeine in jack3d had nothing to do with people getting flagged on drug tests. It was the 1’3 DMAA in it. That was the stuff that actually made you feel like you were on crack….

  • protein powder is fine but dont get whey, its extract from milk and milk is terrible for you. Theres so many growth hormones and fat, your face will break out, and you’ll feel like crap if you take a lot

  • if you are workout there is noway you can be okey with 52 grams of protein.(You need to be ashamed of yourself to call yourself a doctor )

  • What are your takes on Cricked Protein? I have seen reviews that comment it’s really awesome in protein quantities & very high quality.

  • Thank-you! I was so confused and all the videos out there just made it more confusing. I feel so much better about what I should take and what I should ask for.

  • Yes, I need you! I prefer your videos over others! You are extremely good at what you do! The picking of each exercise is perfect, the way you explain to do them, and your over all beautiful personality! Goes together great! You truly are an inspiration.

  • I would not personally recommend multi-vitamins to everyone. If you have a high dietary variation, you are probably getting most of your vitamins already. And some vitamins can be harmful in too large a dose. The most common side effect of a vitamin overdose is nausea.
It’s far better to find out what you’re deficient in, try to fix that in your diet, and if you can’t, then add specific vitamin supplements.

  • I am a big fan of yours sweetie! You are so very beautiful and have a beautiful figure also! I used to be in great shape, but being older with knee disabilities has caused alot of trouble for me! • Hey Jeff what do you say to the guy (me) who has trouble with nutrition? I have a six pack and a put on muscle pretty easy (115-150 in 6 MO) but I hate cooking and when I get bored you’re right it’s easy to just grab a pb cookie. • My experience with protein isolate shakes (both whey and pea) is that, over a few weeks, it slows digestion down and causes one to retain more waste, even when taking probiotics. That could be just me, though. A large (12oz) can of tuna has 75 grams of protein, and seems to pass through and be assimilated easily. When you are training and racing, you don’t want to be carrying a lot of waste. Without being too obsessed with it, I think sprinters need to be aware of their weight and best ‘race weight.’ Strength to weight ratio seems important.

  • 02:25 >”Hydration is 10%” DROPPED. You MUST be well hydrated, always, or suffer slow recovery and risk injury. Undervaluing hydration like that just shows this plan isn’t as carefully thought out as this CEO wants you to believe.

  • 5:09 on forward: IN MY HUMBLE OPINION the most profound quote in all of YouTube nutritional/fitness/supplements/etc ‘hard love’ hurts! In the long run helps!

  • Nick Sounded like he was in a washing machine could have done with better quality video not a Skype call. Found it really hard to listen to

    😀 enjoy

  • There are a bunch of research that shows multivitamis and BCAAs don’t do anything, also whey protein increases insulin, also monster and red bull has basically no caffeine, you should take 150-200 grams of caffeine before a workout and those drinks were way under the limit, i take caffeine pills instead

Thanks

I’m just not sure how safe these powders and supplements are and quite frankly I have trouble trusting these companies and the ingredients they add to their products is questionable. I believe in getting most nutrients from foods rather then these powders. Again, very disappointed to the point it makes me question your integrity.

  • thanks danny…you guys are doing such great informative videos…very much appreciated, thanks for taking the time and effort for putting it out. Would you be able to put up best compound exercises for shoulders and back for building muscle. Thank you in advance!!!

  • protein powder is fine but dont get whey, its extract from milk and milk is terrible for you. Theres so many growth hormones and fat, your face will break out, and you’ll feel like crap if you take a lot

  • You mentioned that dairy has high amino acid profile, especially with Leucine. Do you know if they share the same profile as meats? Less? Or More?
