  • If you live on boxed long shelf life products you’re in for long relationships with the medical profession. 50 years ago John Yudkin warned the world about sugars and Ancel Keyes destroyed his career. Looks like Yudkin was spot on.

  • What I recommend: If you have to snack, snack a half to a full bag of sweets or so. That is better for insulin secretion compared to snacking constantly of a longer period of time and you have gotten the same amount of sweets and energy, hence you should be able to not think of eating for a longer period of time than before.

  • It’s because you are eating a high carbohydrate diet. Your body produces insulin to regulate the glucose in your blood, this is then stored in the liver and body as fat.

    Insulin as a hormone prevents you from being able to access the stored fat as energy and you become hungry again, overriding the bodies ability to regulate bodyfat and your body becomes insulin resistant leading to metabolic diseases of civilization.

I do that by choosing the max I can eat in 1 or 2 days and then ration it for the week… Ex: 1 candy bars(about 50g), about 10 cookies, 2 chips packet, 1 doughnut and 2 slices of pizza. Since it’s a terrible idea to eat it all in 1 or 2 days I spread it into a week… and I tend to go less most of the time.. except if I had exams or my birthday… I try to have dried fruits and nuts sometimes….

  • I gave up soda and sugar in general in 2016. Result: Lost 17 kilos (35 lbs). BMI went from 23 to 19. After a short while water tastes much better when you dont have that sugar sensation anymore. I once in a while fall back in, and get hooked for a few weeks. And up goes the weight. Until I get back out of the addiction. I encourage everybody to try it. The first 48 hours are though. When you get past that it is pretty easy. Beware one piece of candy can hook you right back in:-)

  • I agree with what she’s saying about food companies engineering food to be addictive, but I disagree with her idea that we’re not free because we choose to eat these foods. There are plenty of healthy foods on the market that are cheap and don’t contain these addictive substances. Freedom is being allowed to make a choice (whether good or bad). If you try to shut down the production of “bad” foods, you take away choice and ultimately freedom. Education is the more important thing. Give them this information and allow them to make their own choice.

  • I’ve spent over 40,000 hours on movie & TV sets over the past 23 years. There is ALWAYS some type of “Craft Service” available to snack on.   • Nice timing! Just finished a late lunch that I prepared specifically because I noticed I was in “snack mode.” I find that if I fully satiate myself in a controlled manner I can resist the more mindless snacking I’m prone to (and I work from home, so it’s super easy to snack and why I try not to keep snacks on hand!)

  • I live in Indonesia and every foods are fried in here, and we use palm oil because we produce it. People drink their tea with sugar. Everything is so unhealthy and when I try to avoid those unhealthy things, my mom was like “What are you doing? Just eat! This is healthy cuz it’s ‘homemade food’. And what? Tea without sugar?   • Guys, losing weight does not have to be difficult (I used to feel it did). I’ll give you some advice right now. Search a diet plan known as Custokebon Secrets.   • When I was a young mother I took some long distant holistic nutritional classes with a college in the U.S. and I was lucky to learn about the dangers of sugar and processed refined foods, so I made just about all our meals from scratch. My uncle was a hunter and fisherman. So my freezer was full of moose, deer, and fish he shared with us. Those days are long gone, but sometimes I’m lucky and my brother and sister share when they are lucky enough to get their hands on some moose. I have not purchased store processed meats in decades. There have been lots of time I didn’t follow “real” eating, but I always returned to it.   • super helpful. Used to keep a 5lb bag of dried fuits/nuts/candy in my desk drawer, way too easy. Just ate when bored/studying. Moved it to the kitchen, where it belongs.

  • Thankyou Dr Lustig. A few months ago I was gaining a lot of weight and had frequent health concerns. Then I cleaned up my diet, and I started eating nothing but Salmon,Sardines,Kale,Broccoli, Spinach,eggs,Avocado, chicken,eggs,and nuts such as almonds and pecans and drinking only water or coffee without anything added to it. There was no more any added sugar in my diet and more importantly healthy foods that have very little if any naturally occurring fructose. I am now more muscular but very lean and have a lot more energy and most importantly feeling a lot better most of the time. It all started with me turning away from sugar!

  • Your speech is very good. I lost four teeth because of caries. In my childhood I ate a lot of products which contained much sugar and I was not really able to control it because I was a child. So I’m going to watch all the other videos and documentaries Lustig suggested, and hopefully I won’t have to go back to Paleo which is 70% fat, small protein, vegetables and no fruit. (I hate that diet.) Yet I’ve feared carbs in even high fiber whole foods like corn, potatoes, oatmeal, on a vegan diet. I’ve read so many books, I’m afraid of all food at this point. But when Dr. Lustig explained how the two fibers form a filter/net in small intestine that slows sugars in those foods from causing a sugar and insulin spike it made so much sence!

    By now I fear and feel as though I have got to be severely nutrition and mineral/vitamin deficient from the decades of dieting and deprivation. I saw documentary “That Sugar Film” and understood the demo to mean that even fruit has both sucrose and fructose in it and caused the liver to store fat. But there are at least 100 other things in this interview that has answered questions I’ve had regarding depression, lethargy, obesity, etc., as well as what is behind these trumptards whose front lobes don’t light up in brain scans and high sugar diets leading to so many of their addictions which lower their IQ which many of them think is that they have ADHD. This sugar thing combined with trauma is behind ALL addiction and mental illness in this country. As well as mass shootings, etc. This is one of the most important and powerful interviews ever. Yet I have been a huge fan of Dr. Amen for a while now. Keep up the good work both of you! The quality of so many lives depends on you doing a better job of showing Americans why this topic is SOOOOO IMPORTANT. And you are so right, we reward children with sugar!   • I gave up soda and sugar in general in 2016. Result: Lost 17 kilos (35 lbs). BMI went from 23 to 19. After a short while water tastes much better when you dont have that sugar sensation anymore. I once in a while fall back in, and get hooked for a few weeks. And up goes the weight. Until I get back out of the addiction. I encourage everybody to try it. The first 48 hours are though. When you get past that it is pretty easy. Beware one piece of candy can hook you right back in:-)

    Before the past 6 months, if I had gone to a restaurant that served only brown rice I would have eaten no or little rice.

  • 6 months ago I quit sugar. Quit drinking Coke and quit sweets and as many processed foods as i could that contain sugar. My blood pressure dropped to the point that I dont need high blood pressure meds anymore. My cholesterol levels went from being high to dropping into the normal range. My triglycerides went from being sky high to normal. When my doctor saw the results she went all over the office showing everyone the results, she was ecstatic. I have more energy and feel much better than before. I know what Dr Lustig says to be truth.

  • Eating itself can be addictive. The body is designed for OMAD or longer. I see the value in preparing your own meals or being selective in using the fast food convenience. Convenience doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It depends how you use it. Most people are stuck seeking pleasure rather than happiness.

  • I went cold turkey off of all processed sweets and junk food back in 2011-2012. During that time I replaced the cravings with bananas and plain yogurt and increased fatty fish intake. Took me 1-2 months to get rid of the cravings and withdrawals but I’m so glad I made the choice. Now my weight has never exceeded 100 lbs. I can eat junk food if I want but I don’t crave it. I normally don’t buy it either. I tell everyone all the time how corporations engineer junk food to be addictive; despite telling others this, most don’t care and keep eating what they want, leading to poor health outcomes and suffering later in life. It’s such a shame…

  • I ration snacks per week… It helps control how much I eat per month. I do that by choosing the max I can eat in 1 or 2 days and then ration it for the week… Ex: 1 candy bars(about 50g), about 10 cookies, 2 chips packet, 1 doughnut and 2 slices of pizza. Since it’s a terrible idea to eat it all in 1 or 2 days I spread it into a week… and I tend to go less most of the time.. except if I had exams or my birthday… I try to have dried fruits and nuts sometimes….

Then I cleaned up my diet, and I started eating nothing but Salmon,Sardines,Kale,Broccoli, Spinach,eggs,Avocado, chicken,eggs,and nuts such as almonds and pecans and drinking only water or coffee without anything added to it. There was no more any added sugar in my diet and more importantly healthy foods that have very little if any naturally occurring fructose. I am now more muscular but very lean and have a lot more energy and most importantly feeling a lot better most of the time. It all started with me turning away from sugar!

  • BrainCraft, please read this. The reason why we are snaking all the time is because of our carbohydrate diet. Once you go to a fat diet (aka ketogenic diet) you stop snacking. Its all because of carbs. I am not totally sure why exactly that is. Bot as someone who is on a ketogenic diet for quite some time, i can tell you that i have never snacked less in my entire life.

    Also, i want to point out the irony of your productivity add at the end of the video. In my experience, carbs = low productivity. Keto = maximum productivity. All you do is go on keto, and suddenly you get far more stuff done with much less mental effort.

It came in huge cans that you had to puncture on opposite sides with a triangular can opener in order to pour. Kool-Aid came in flavor packets that you dumped into a pitcher along with a metric ton of sugar and then stirred with a wooden spoon. Good times. In fact, we probably drank our Hi-C and KoolAid while watching ‘Good Times’.

    why we snack is a fascinating topic, one of which I’ve been interested in for a long time. Personally, I believe almost everyone is unknowing addicted to food (sugar specifically). Your question of “Am I actually hungry” is an amazing question, but feel can only really be answered by simply not eating at all. I’m sure some reading this may think I’m a crazy person but think about, (as Vanessa said) “because there’s an evolutionary psychology explanation for everything!”; we didn’t have access to food whenever we wanted to back then. Actually, we often went days without food just as many other animals do (and still do in the wild today). Due to technology and cultural changes in not only because normal to eat all the time but it was considered healthy.

    anyway anyway, I could honestly write a book in the comments here and I could see myself ranting out an introduction here so I’ll try to sum things up.
    I feel the only way to truly understand our addiction and to see how powerful it is, is indeed to not eat (water fast) for 7-14 days. you won’t feel hungrytrust me, you really won’t but that urge to just want to eat something or maybe end your fast early is REALLY strong. The crazy thing is, after those 7-14 days, I don’t think it will break a life time long addiction but it will at least open your eyes to it.

    By now I fear and feel as though I have got to be severely nutrition and mineral/vitamin deficient from the decades of dieting and deprivation. I saw documentary “That Sugar Film” and understood the demo to mean that even fruit has both sucrose and fructose in it and caused the liver to store fat. But there are at least 100 other things in this interview that has answered questions I’ve had regarding depression, lethargy, obesity, etc., as well as what is behind these trumptards whose front lobes don’t light up in brain scans and high sugar diets leading to so many of their addictions which lower their IQ which many of them think is that they have ADHD.   • I discovered that to feel full you must eat food with fiber. My formula is “one gram of fiber for every one hundred calories.” Only eat food that has this amount of fiber or more. The damage is so visible in him today in other ways than just the obesity.

  • BrainCraft, please read this. The reason why we are snaking all the time is because of our carbohydrate diet. Once you go to a fat diet (aka ketogenic diet) you stop snacking. Its all because of carbs. I am not totally sure why exactly that is. Bot as someone who is on a ketogenic diet for quite some time, i can tell you that i have never snacked less in my entire life.

    Also, i want to point out the irony of your productivity add at the end of the video. In my experience, carbs = low productivity. Keto = maximum productivity. All you do is go on keto, and suddenly you get far more stuff done with much less mental effort.

  • What I recommend: If you have to snack, snack a half to a full bag of sweets or so. That is better for insulin secretion compared to snacking constantly of a longer period of time and you have gotten the same amount of sweets and energy, hence you should be able to not think of eating for a longer period of time than before.

  • I practice some of these tricks as well. I work nights, so on my days off, I am up during the night. Nothing is really open and the few things that are open are a good distance away. I don’t keep snacks in the house so if I am hungry I have to cook a proper meal or just go hungry. Sometimes I do the latter and get a fast going for a day or two.

    why we snack is a fascinating topic, one of which I’ve been interested in for a long time. Personally, I believe almost everyone is unknowing addicted to food (sugar specifically). Your question of “Am I actually hungry” is an amazing question, but feel can only really be answered by simply not eating at all. I’m sure some reading this may think I’m a crazy person but think about, (as Vanessa said) “because there’s an evolutionary psychology explanation for everything!”; we didn’t have access to food whenever we wanted to back then. Actually, we often went days without food just as many other animals do (and still do in the wild today). Due to technology and cultural changes in not only because normal to eat all the time but it was considered healthy.

    anyway anyway, I could honestly write a book in the comments here and I could see myself ranting out an introduction here so I’ll try to sum things up.
    I feel the only way to truly understand our addiction and to see how powerful it is, is indeed to not eat (water fast) for 7-14 days. you won’t feel hungrytrust me, you really won’t but that urge to just want to eat something or maybe end your fast early is REALLY strong. The crazy thing is, after those 7-14 days, I don’t think it will break a life time long addiction but it will at least open your eyes to it.

There are plenty of healthy foods on the market that are cheap and don’t contain these addictive substances. Freedom is being allowed to make a choice (whether good or bad). If you try to shut down the production of “bad” foods, you take away choice and ultimately freedom. Education is the more important thing. Give them this information and allow them to make their own choice.

  • I went cold turkey off of all processed sweets and junk food back in 2011-2012. During that time I replaced the cravings with bananas and plain yogurt and increased fatty fish intake. Took me 1-2 months to get rid of the cravings and withdrawals but I’m so glad I made the choice. Now my weight has never exceeded 100 lbs. I can eat junk food if I want but I don’t crave it. I normally don’t buy it either. I tell everyone all the time how corporations engineer junk food to be addictive; despite telling others this, most don’t care and keep eating what they want, leading to poor health outcomes and suffering later in life.   • 6 months ago I quit sugar. Quit drinking Coke and quit sweets and as many processed foods as i could that contain sugar. My blood pressure dropped to the point that I dont need high blood pressure meds anymore. My cholesterol levels went from being high to dropping into the normal range. My triglycerides went from being sky high to normal. When my doctor saw the results she went all over the office showing everyone the results, she was ecstatic. I have more energy and feel much better than before. I know what Dr Lustig says to be truth.

I’m 58 and slinging myself over fences with ease. Are balancing myself of a platform 45 feet in the air. I know from my childhood experiences that as long as I don’t think about what I’m about to do, I can perform what was visualized by my brain.
    Imagine, 27 thoughts in a day and doing 27 things in a day. To lose weight, the mind needs to be silent 90% of the time.

    -Exercise the ability to see the food in stores as unhealthy vs healthy.
    -At this point the healthy options are basically just the vegetables, berries, fish, water and fruits that are not modified to hell and back.
    -I shop with my car
    -I go into a store with a list
    -I buy nothing else than what’s on the list or discount products that fit my healthy food list.
    -I never buy anything with sugar.
    -I buy food for half a week at a time.
    I never look at adds and if I do, I analyze it for what it really tries to do.
    -Food industries don’t care about our health, they say they do but it’s just a facade.
    -They just want us to be addicted and get our money.
