You’ve been told to drink a lot of water to always have breakfast and to eat more frequently in order to increase your metabolism. And all three of these are myths not backed by any scientific evidence. Theres also plenty of other myths like eating spicy food to increase metabolism drinking coffee and other stimulants to increase metabolism, and of course every new fad SuperFood will supposedly increase your metabolism…you know coconut quinoa avocados. But….. according to the science there’s really only a handful of simple things that we can concentrate on to effect our metabolism. By focusing on these few things we can actually permanently change our metabolism rather than reading Fairy Tail like articles about 10, 20, or 55 ways to increase your metabolism. The first proven way to increase your metabolism is by increasing your lean body mass. Now the exact number of how many calories each pound of muscle Burns isn’t fully clear. At one point it was believed to be 50 to 100 calories per pound of muscle but nowadays that seems like an overestimation. Some studies say that for each pound of fat on your body you only burn two extra calories to maintain it. And for muscle it’s only six extra calories so it’s really not all that much of an increase. On the other hand organs like the kidneys and liver and the Heart can burn up to 200 calories per pound. So it would seem that muscle plays a really small role in your metabolism. However there’s a lot about muscles effects that we don’t fully know about that could add up throughout the day and can easily explain how muscle can be burning a lot more than six calories per pound. First of all these studies are done in a way that keeps protein turnover at a constant rate. Let me explain what protein turnover is. All day your body is creating and breaking down muscle. We refer to the balance between protein synthesis and protein degradation as protein turnover. If you have more synthesis and breakdown then you’re in what’s called an anabolic mode and your building muscle. If you have more breakdown then synthesis then you’re in what’s called a catabolic state that burns lean muscle tissue. The problem with keeping protein turnover the same in the studies is that most types of resistance exercises will accelerate protein turnover which ultimately increases calories burnt hours and sometimes days after the workout. Some studies show that the more muscle you have the more calories you burn after an intense workout. So this is a perfect example how muscle has many hidden effects on your metabolism. When you’re done exercising especially after a weight training session it takes time for your body to return to homeostasis. Your body needs time and energy to refill the depleted glycogen stores in your muscles and it also needs energy for more protein turnover. So the assumption that muscle itself Burns a ton of calories at rest is probably not true however muscle after the influence of training specially strength training and high intensity training seems to burn a lot more calories in the recovery process. So if you’re not exercising definitely try to incorporate some weight training or some high intensity interval training to help increase the amount of calories that you burn at rest. Like I said we don’t know the full story about muscle but we do know that it does influence your resting energy expenditure. In a study called age related decrease in resting energy expenditure in sedentary women we get to see a glimpse of what causes that slowed metabolism that we see as people get older. A lot of people believe that as you get older your metabolism naturally slows down and there’s not much you could do. But this might not be true. In this study the results suggest that a loss of muscle mass as we age especially leg muscle can lead to decreases in your resting energy expenditure. The study also does acknowledge that the decreases in resting energy expenditure are not fully explained just by changes in the body composition. So there are other factors at play here. The exact effect down to the number of calories burnt for each pound of muscle is unknown but if you want to improve and increase your metabolism there is a huge correlation…..

I have such a slow metabolism. I probably would exercise. But I have depression and uhh I have no motivation or any energy to actually work out. I’ve also been skipping out on all meals bc I wanna be a stick
well i’m 72kg for 1,72cm (5’6” and about 158lb) and i want to go down at least 15kg (33lb) before doing that, I know i can build muscle and stuff and if i gain weigh after that for me its ok, but I still want to go down a little, there’s a way where I still lose weigh and fat kinda doing that? While your muscles look beautiful and toned, i am assuming you are 5,4” or under with an hourglass fugue. It will not look the same on me… a 5’10” tall straight framed woman. I would look unfeminine. Hi there! I like your videos they are helpful and educational! I am an endomorph female! So as you probably know I store a lot of fat on my thighs…. I am trying my best to ‘sculpt’ and ‘tone’ but I want to ask about you advice… You suggest we should all lift HEAVY and do sets of 8-10 reps. I don’t I use moderate weight and I do sets of 15-20 as many endomorph targeted videos suggest this. I feel this is because endomorphs build muscle quickly but shed fat a low slower. So by doing HEAVY weights I will increase the size of the muscles I already have but I will still have the fat layer on top. However, I totally get the science behind lifting heavy. Please help me out! I am so confused! Thanks you

Some people have more fat cells than others so they gain weight easily and have much difficulty losing it. On the other hand you have people with fewer fat cells and they have a hard time gaining weight as opposed to losing it or maintaining a low bodyweight

So great! I really appreciate anyone saying to eat more as they weight train rather than to eat less! I have struggled for pretty much 20 years! It’s been so hard for me to believe that for me as a woman I should be eating more even though I know how to eat healthy! It’s hard for me also with the idea of doing less physically but it makes sense and I know that is what the body and mind intuitively wants to do!

Just wanted to point out that muscle doesn’t weigh more than fat. 1kg of muscle weighs the same as 1kg of fat. But of course, muscle is more dense than fat.
This video helped me so much. I have been trying to lose weight for years and in these past 6 months I’ve done just that. However, I’ve been eating less and less to the point where I’d eat one meal a day and even regret it. This helped so much and gave me so much more confidence to move on and develop new goals.
I will really try to take upon these tips, as I’m struggling at the moment. For me, ever since I’ve been doing resistance-endurance training 3x a week(bodypump classes), I’ve noticed how I started gaining weight on the scale (+2-3 kg). Since I was terrified of having to start all over again, I decreased my calorie-intake to as low as 1000-1200 calories/day, and it’s still not helping at all with my weight loss. I’m really confused now as to how I should deal with it. I really want to go back to my original weight (my only indication that I’m thin atm because I’m really blind), but then, I’m really doing progress as my body has become a bit more toned and stronger.

Love your videos. I am currently doing Muay Thai training three times a week as well as intense dancing (both of which are mostly cardio), yoga everyday and 25 minutes of resistance training daily as well.
I am doing so much because It has reduced my anxiety and really made me happy. Also, I do not have a lot of resistance training equipment at home so I have been using water bottles and gallons to build up. And I don’t generally go to gyms so cardio feels more in my comfort zone.
But watching this video I was wondering if I am not overdoing it and slowing my metabolism too much. Anyways… thank you for this, I will consider everything.
I eat two meals a day only like Eric Berg says. I eat a meal around 12 pm and then at 5 pm, and never after 7 pm.
My new workout is cardio or hit sometime at 11 pm and then eat, then at 4 pm I do weight workout and then eat.
I do blood type diet eating only and eat mostly how the Asian eats since my blood type are like theirs.
1. Slow down exercise do less cardio (let your body rest)
2. Strength/weight training
3. Increase food/calorie intake slowly and stop snacking (3 large meals) eat till full to stop snacking
4. Shift focus from scale to how you are feeling and weight training progress

Hi, I came across your video and very inspired by your experiences. Because I am doing exactly the same thing like you did. I was eating 1,200 cal just until last week and has increased to 1,400 cal this week. When I was eating 1,200 cal I hit plateau and could not lose anymore fat. I did not want to eat fewer than 1,200 cal because I just knew it was not right. I also experienced bloated 2-3 times a week because I did not eat enough. I did 5 times hiit bodyweight workout a week at about 40-50 mins each day and I was starting to feel exhausted because I had been doing it for more than 4 months now and honestly I could not see a big difference on my body. My body fat still lingers around 20% til now. I am starting to increase my calories and honestly my weight has also increased, but is not much. I am thinking to start doing weightlift training. My question is when you start adding more food every week and reduced your hiit workout, did you also start weightlifting or did you give your body a rest for a while? How many days do you recommend us to do weightlifting in a week? Like you, I do not want to get bulky and have big muscles, I just want to be leaner and have low body fat %.

Disclaimer reverse dieting will not result in fat loss for everybody. You are more likely to gain a little but longterm its the best thing for you so hang steady and next diet around you’ll be pulling from a much deeper well

People it’s easy. Get up in the morning and begin your day with a jumpstart workout like simple push-ups, burpies, or yoga session. Start at 20 30 minutes. Wait a couple hours and eat something healthy like fruit and protein, however you can get it. A few hours later have a real meal with some carbs, to prep you for a proper run out workout. Refuel with smoothie or whatever is light enough to stuff you. Last eat a good dinner and don’t over do it. B people get caught up eating past their fill. A good stretch before sleep will help with a proper nights sleep. Sleep is important for recovery and if course rest. Rinse and repeat. Start slow, go harder the days you feel up to it, but never over do it until you’re adjusted to your routine. Routine is also important, run some days or get cardio through intense yoga, workout other days with or without weights, and remember to eat. Drink lots of water. Give it thirty days, your energy levels will explode and you’ll feel better about yourself. I also suggest Win Hof breathing once a day, preferably in the morning before meal and exercise. Cold shower afterwards and start your day right! Good luck y’all.
Good advice. Eating 6 meals a day when I was training for bikini competing caused me to just want to eat all the time. I now eat intuitively and have a decent sized meal that actually fills me up and stops me snacking. X
This is definitely very helpful and I think muscle mass does play a huge role and how much calories you burn I am still a little bit overweight but I’ve also been putting on a little bit of muscle and I think that’s been helping me lose more weight combined with a more active job that I have now which I work in a very hard warehouse job like I’m eating 2000 calories more than is recommended for my body weight and that’s at the highest activity level than that calculator had I’m eating about 4000 to 5000 calories a day I’m also doing the ketogenic diet and I’m still losing some weight at least eight pounds a month or more eating this amount of calories which according to the calculator I used I should be gaining weight that’s why I don’t depend on these calculators they don’t factor in a lot of things like your lean body mass and how active you actually are

The only problem with drinking cold water all the time is it can dehydrated you.. your body needs to heat the water up to absorb it.. so drink room temperature water as well

I’m exactly the weight i should be for my hight, age, etc. I don’t over exercise. I eat well (entirely plant base vegan). In an average day I consume between 5,000-6,000 calories. It’s not about calories. It’s about where said calories come from. You eat garbage and consume less calories than recommended you’ll still look andfeel horrible. I’m 41, still get asked for ID on a regular basis. I don’t look young for my age. Everyone else looks old for their age. Plant based for 28 years.

Personally speaking… unless a woman is actually really and truly taking care of her self I don’t even consider dating women older than 27.

I used to think I had a slow metabolism. I then thought to search up how many calories of food I was eating. I got around 2500 which is a good amount for me. Then I searched up my liquid calories and it came out to 2000 calories per day. I stopped drinking these and switched to water and have lost around 2 kg in a week. Yes, I too am guilty of jumping from diet plan to others as well, I think that I must have tested every fat reduction system that was available, however eventually not one of them helped me to reduce and maintain the weight off. Just a question regarding reverse dieting you have said to try increasing by around 50cal per week but it’s not clear if you mean 50cal extra daily or 50cal extra total for the week. I checked questions on your reverse dieting video in the link above but there are conflicting answers when this was asked before (one you said to increase 50cal on one day each week and another you said to do (for example) 1900cal/day week one, 1950cal/day week two, etc.). I was eating like 900kcal, and i look like just bones. My parents are worried, my body was asked for rest, and more food, since my stomach are always rumbling.

This video kinda discouraged me. I actually like to run and it’s my main form of exercise right now. I usually run for 40 minutes and then do 20 minutes stretching and 20-30 minutes of arms, back or abs if my muscles aren’t sore. Now I am feeling like I am doing this all wrong, but this is really working for me mentally so I honestly don’t think I could or want to spend 60 minutes lifting weights. I am so confused on what to do. I have lost 13 pounds in 6 weeks doing this but I am scared my metabolism is ruined now so I will just gain it back.

When i eat the calories Im supposed to be intaking I gain more weight. And I do cardio and weight lifting….. and I eat healthy food
Honestly, it’s a lot to do with genes and intense activities you did as a child (5-10yrs old) to build your muscle structure like swimming or gymnastics, they tend to stay for life. Some ppl genetically store more fat than muscle (like people whose ancestors lived in cold climates to survive winters). Calorie counting will help very little, you will always have to work out to maintain weight loss, you will never just be slim, unfortunately, you missed that childhood window.
1-Gain muscles
2-Workouts like cardio
3-Include healthy protein sources
4-Take chilli, paper, ginger
Avoid crash diets,intensive workouts because it burns your muscles

Do you think taking bcaas while losing weight is a good idea. I read that it keeps your muscle mass, so therefore wouldn’t keeping that muscle improve fat loss in my weightloss journey?
I have been struggling with anorexia for the last 7 years. Went from 38kg up to 49kg. But I still struggle with calories. I workout 5 times a week and eat healthy and try my best to eat enough calories but it seems like my stomach holds all the fat and doesn’t want to lose it. If I under eat it stays flat but as soon as I go on 0 calories in vs out or try to add calories to build more muscles it looks bigger and bigger. I’m so afraid to add even more calories as it triggers my anorexia and I start under eating again. =(

Well, cardio is a tool you can use, cause getting really lean you cant cut calories forever. Not to mention that once you get used to it, it is an even better tool at keeping your BF percentage low. I believe in eating right, strenght and cardio training. The holy trinity 😉
Thanks for this! My husband and I disagreed over eating more to lose weight, turns out, he was right. He told me to eat a small meal every two hours and take a break from the gym. (I go about 6 days a week) I told him there was no way that would work and I would absolutely gain weight. Instead, I’m back to having a flat stomach, but I’m eating more. I only eat when I’m hungry, and I’ll have a small meal. I focus more of weight training as well. I do about 30 minutes of cardio at the gym and then the rest is lifting. Can’t believe this worked. I am so used to restricting calories and increasing cardio, so when I started to gain weight instead of lose it I was panicking.

Then I started introducing sweet stuff and more carbohydrates. I started gaining weight and when I left that job that was the culprit to the problem. Here I’m with 30 pounds more than the weight I had when I started working there 6 years ago. Definitely muscles are good and exercise but remember,, you never will be able to do enough exercse to burn what you are able to overeat. I’m trying to get rid oncve again from the bad eating habits which are so easy to get back and the loss of self dedication to make the exercises you need to do. I’m persuaded the day I will start again eating right and exercising I will start loosing weight even if I have a slow metabolism. Good luck.
From the viewpoint of evolutionary fitness, a slow metabolism is advantageous. You should aim for the highest healthy ( and thus optimal ) body fat percentage possible.
Which for men would be 18-19ish % and for women around 32% and a functional amount of muscle mass ( being able to pulland push your bodyweight effortlessly.

I agree to all of them, but one. I love to do intermediate fasting, it helps with calorie intake, and control. It helps me to manage my overall net calories of the whole day.
The quickest way I’ve found to build that kind of athletic looking muscularity in your arms is with a 5 and a half minute routine you stick onto the end of your workout.

Yes, I too am guilty of jumping from diet plan to others as well, I think that I must have tested every fat reduction system that was available, however eventually not one of them helped me to reduce and maintain the weight off. HIIT is not 40/45 mins but 10-20 mins. If you are going all out for 20-30 seconds and increasing the intensity with each interval, no way can you do that for 40-45 mins. If you can go 40+ mins, you aren’t doing it as hard as you should or at your max with increasing intensity as you are suppose to.
how do you plan out your large meals? like if you wait 4-6 hours in between eating are you okay with eating only an hour or two before bed?

well i’m 72kg for 1,72cm (5’6” and about 158lb) and i want to go down at least 15kg (33lb) before doing that, I know i can build muscle and stuff and if i gain weigh after that for me its ok, but I still want to go down a little, there’s a way where I still lose weigh and fat kinda doing that? Like, my metabolism and calorie intake would be higher but can i still maintain a defict (eating more than i was before but still a defict)….? lol i got tu eat up to 800 cals, meaning restrict and binge, then got up to 1000 but still felt tired. I am now eating 1200 but i am very petite and very young so that’s more or less okay. I absolutely love this advice. For a long time I was losing a lot of weight but my problem was that I had to keep eating lower and lower calories to maintain it. And since quarantine I have gained 20 pounds back but instead of going on keto or keto vegan or Rob vegan or a short term diet I am working very hard to build muscle. The only problem with drinking cold water all the time is it can dehydrated you.. your body needs to heat the water up to absorb it.. so drink room temperature water as well

People it’s easy. Get up in the morning and begin your day with a jumpstart workout like simple push-ups, burpies, or yoga session. Start at 20 30 minutes. Wait a couple hours and eat something healthy like fruit and protein, however you can get it. A few hours later have a real meal with some carbs, to prep you for a proper run out workout. Refuel with smoothie or whatever is light enough to stuff you. Last eat a good dinner and don’t over do it. B people get caught up eating past their fill. A good stretch before sleep will help with a proper nights sleep. Sleep is important for recovery and if course rest. Rinse and repeat. Start slow, go harder the days you feel up to it, but never over do it until you’re adjusted to your routine. Routine is also important, run some days or get cardio through intense yoga, workout other days with or without weights, and remember to eat. Drink lots of water. Give it thirty days, your energy levels will explode and you’ll feel better about yourself. I also suggest Win Hof breathing once a day, preferably in the morning before meal and exercise. Metabolism does not affect your weight loss or weight gain, so stop eating spicy foods and taking x y z pills and put down the fork

Of course all those points in trying to get more metabolism and losing fat are critical and complex. It’s not like a linear function. I definitely feel more energized after lifting. Cardio is definitely good if you haven’t exercised in a long time but for adding muscle it is not good. Lately there have been workouts that I have done which are mostly fat burning since the Fitbit app you can add workouts on there and it tells you what most of your workout is in which zone.
I’m exactly the weight i should be for my hight, age, etc. I don’t over exercise. I eat well (entirely plant base vegan). In an average day I consume between 5,000-6,000 calories. It’s not about calories. It’s about where said calories come from. You eat garbage and consume less calories than recommended you’ll still look andfeel horrible. I’m 41, still get asked for ID on a regular basis. I don’t look young for my age. Everyone else looks old for their age. Plant based for 28 years.

I eat two meals a day only like Eric Berg says. I eat a meal around 12 pm and then at 5 pm, and never after 7 pm.
My new workout is cardio or hit sometime at 11 pm and then eat, then at 4 pm I do weight workout and then eat.
I do blood type diet eating only and eat mostly how the Asian eats since my blood type are like theirs.
Personally I believe you are in a caloric surplus which is great for gaining muscle mass but you already had a very nice figure in your thumbnail before picture. I think for someone that is a little chubbier and trying to lose weight it wouldn’t be ideal for them to eat that much.. calories do add up very fast and they won’t see result. Maybe they should be in a caloric deficit first, shred the fat first then once they are at a comfortable weight they can get to a caloric surplus and incorporate weight training to really gain muscles because I don’t believe your ideology would apply to overweight people. On this last note I do agree that 1200 calories is way to little for anybody.

So great! I really appreciate anyone saying to eat more as they weight train rather than to eat less! I have struggled for pretty much 20 years! It’s been so hard for me to believe that for me as a woman I should be eating more even though I know how to eat healthy! It’s hard for me also with the idea of doing less physically but it makes sense and I know that is what the body and mind intuitively wants to do!

@Jeska I have two and they are 2 years apart(1&3) they are terrible sleepers and I am trying so hard to get back to my pre baby weight as well….but lifting with dumbells and if I dont have time to execute that I do hiit with bodyweight exercises and bands. In jan I started the cliche get into shape goal but with long term thoughts in mind a d so far i am down from 195 to 182 but in fat i believe that number is higher cause I’ve put on some muscle. Just wanted to point out that muscle doesn’t weigh more than fat. 1kg of muscle weighs the same as 1kg of fat. But of course, muscle is more dense than fat.

Thanks for this! My husband and I disagreed over eating more to lose weight, turns out, he was right. He told me to eat a small meal every two hours and take a break from the gym. (I go about 6 days a week) I told him there was no way that would work and I would absolutely gain weight. Instead, I’m back to having a flat stomach, but I’m eating more. I only eat when I’m hungry, and I’ll have a small meal. I focus more of weight training as well. I do about 30 minutes of cardio at the gym and then the rest is lifting. Can’t believe this worked. I am so used to restricting calories and increasing cardio, so when I started to gain weight instead of lose it I was panicking.

Hi, I came across your video and very inspired by your experiences. Because I am doing exactly the same thing like you did. I was eating 1,200 cal just until last week and has increased to 1,400 cal this week. When I was eating 1,200 cal I hit plateau and could not lose anymore fat. I did not want to eat fewer than 1,200 cal because I just knew it was not right. I also experienced bloated 2-3 times a week because I did not eat enough. I did 5 times hiit bodyweight workout a week at about 40-50 mins each day and I was starting to feel exhausted because I had been doing it for more than 4 months now and honestly I could not see a big difference on my body. My body fat still lingers around 20% til now. I am starting to increase my calories and honestly my weight has also increased, but is not much. I am thinking to start doing weightlift training. My question is when you start adding more food every week and reduced your hiit workout, did you also start weightlifting or did you give your body a rest for a while? How many days do you recommend us to do weightlifting in a week? Like you, I do not want to get bulky and have big muscles, I just want to be leaner and have low body fat %.

I think for someone that is a little chubbier and trying to lose weight it wouldn’t be ideal for them to eat that much.. calories do add up very fast and they won’t see result. Maybe they should be in a caloric deficit first, shred the fat first then once they are at a comfortable weight they can get to a caloric surplus and incorporate weight training to really gain muscles because I don’t believe your ideology would apply to overweight people. On this last note I do agree that 1200 calories is way to little for anybody.
I agree to all of them, but one. I love to do intermediate fasting, it helps with calorie intake, and control. It helps me to manage my overall net calories of the whole day.
I run about 25-30 mile a week with one tempo and one HIIT run in that week. I’ve ran several marathons and mini marathons, and I did cross country and track in high school. I also strength training, but I’m worried the cardio I’m doing is slowing me down. I’ve been stuck at 1000-1100 calories, and when I increase I just gain weight. Should I stop the cardio?
Disclaimer reverse dieting will not result in fat loss for everybody. You are more likely to gain a little but longterm its the best thing for you so hang steady and next diet around you’ll be pulling from a much deeper well
can we do intense ab workouts instead of weight lifting? since i do not have access to that equipment. also does intermittent fasting slow your metabolism?
The quickest way I’ve found to build that kind of athletic looking muscularity in your arms is with a 5 and a half minute routine you stick onto the end of your workout.

Ways to increase metabolic rate:
1. INCREASE LEAN BODY MASS (more muscle)
2. INCREASE PROTEIN CONSUMPTION (focus on 1.5 2g of protein per KG) My advice: only start eating carb’s and fats once you achieved your daily protein intake. This way you wont be hungry and you are going to lose fat faster than Trump broke his pre-election promises, while conserving your muscles even gaining muscles if your a newbie.
3. ACTIVE REST (Take a slow walk in the park with a friend or family member)
I feel like men in fitness have had this figured out for so long! For me, it’s hard to wrap my head around how less cardio and more food could possible lead to the body I want. We’re taught to be so scared of food! Muscles take calories to survive! Work your muscles ladies!!!

so I have an insanely fast metabolism and I want to know if that increases muscle breakdown when my body needs energy. every 30 mins I start to get hungry and i eat about 9000 calories a day. i am 110 lbs and have a bmi of about 15. answers would be great!

Like he said walking is not an exercise. I walk for more than 2 hours everyday because of my dog. But I am still fat because my eating habits are not changed. Walking alone is not a solution for losing weight.
this is my workout is it any good?: 10 minutes iron butterflies 6 minutes core pummelers 2 minutes of push ups 1 minute squats 3 minutes of weights 2 minutes of walking running or jogging (at least) and 3 random exercises for 5 minutes each.

the things you mentioned at first (drinking water, coffee, chewing gum)… I know these things don’t burn /that/ many calories (somewhere between 20-100 extra throughout the day probably), but i’m glad I did them when I started trying to lose weight. It helped me while intermittent fasting and trying not to eat high calorie foods because it makes you a lot less hungry to chew gum, drink water, and have some caffeine.

i got from 92kg to 77kg since January just with a diet, just eating healthy and avoiding sugar and only eating complex carbs,(vegetables) and walking with 6kg lost in the first 30 days, i was walking for something between 3 to 5 h a day due to the job i was doing back there. now i walk between 1 to 2 h per day but i have more time so i add some more intense training, the problem is that i do not have access to a gym to do something serious but overall are some good results

Ive heard that our metabolism depends on our fat ratio, I mean for different types of activity. For example: for speed we need
60% saturated fat
30% monounsaturated
10% polyunsaturated
But if we build up muscles (I suppose) we need less saturated fat. So how to swap our fat ratio when we want only to boost our metabolism. Because professionals know what they need, they feel day-by-day changes
Besides we cant eat so much coconut oil, but MCT oil is needed to burn fat but in specific situation and mostly on keto-diet.
Typical person even doesnt want to know about fat, fats.
