There are two assumptions many people make about their choices at the market based on labeling. 1) That a “natural” choice is always a healthy choice and 2) that the guidelines and advice given on food labels are straightforward and relatively transparent. They aren’t necessarily right.. If you’re concerned about eating healthy but you’re not sure how best to do it, get in the habit of reading food labels … and you need to know how to read them, too. (check part 1 for more info.). If you wanted orange juice as a healthy way to quench your thirst, there are some reasons to opt for water instead. Why is that? Too much sugar is bad for you and processed foods are full of them. But some foods that advertise as “natural” foods are, too. A typical 8-ounce glass of pure orange juice can have around 21 grams of sugar, which is more than half the 36 grams recommended for men and only 25 grams for women. You may have read the packaging to be doubly sure and noticed that nothing was added to the juice. That made it look like it was “healthy” and “natural” which in moderation it can be but there’s almost an entire daily dose of sugar for women in a single 8 ounce glass.. You have to know how to read your food labels to avoid fooling yourself. There are plenty of other ways that food labels can undercount, deflect or underemphasize the potential unhealthy ingredients or components that go into food and food products. Here are some tips to avoid some unhealthy traps: Nutrition information is based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Your particular healthy calorie intake may vary significantly.. Fats can also sneak into food labels in some interesting ways.. Looking out for artificial fats (like trans-fats) and added sugars is only part of the healthy reading you need to do. If you’re eating things that don’t list a lot of beneficial nutrients (like iron, fiber, and vitamins) you might be consuming a lot of empty calories.. Beware of sneaky trans-fats. If the label says “0 grams of trans fat” but also lists “partially hydrogenated oil,” that means there is less than.5 grams of trans fat – not a lot, but it’s there.. In today’s confusing food environment, you need to be educated to stay healthy. One of the best ways to do that is to learn about food labels.. KEY TERMS & IDEAS: Nutrition information on food labels is based on a 2,000 calorie diet. When you’re assessing the information on food labels, remember to take into account the daily calorie intake that is healthy for your body’s needs, which may be more or less than 2,000.. Just because something is “natural” does not mean that it is automatically good for you. Fruit juices, for instance, are full of sugar and drinking a lot of juice could raise your sugar intake to very unhealthy levels.. Trans fats. “There are two broad types of trans fats found in foods: naturally-occurring and artificial trans fats. Naturally-occurring trans fats are produced in the gut of some animals and foods made from these animals (e.g., milk and meat products) may contain small quantities of these fats. Artificial trans fats (or trans fatty acids) are created in an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid.. The primary dietary source for trans fats in processed food is “partially hydrogenated oils.” Look for them on the ingredient list on food packages. In November 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils are no longer Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) in human food.”. Mistakes When Reading Food Labels Nutrition Tips as part of the expert series by GeoBeats..
.
Food labels can be really confusing. There are actually a few things on there that are the most important things to understand. Do not worry about the rest of the little fine print stuff. The main things to know on a food label is what is the serving size, how many servings are in that container because all the rest of that information that is listed there is in relationship to that serving, not to the entire package.. .
That is where things get a little confusing because often times the packaging is made to look like it is a single serving. There are a lot of juices out there, there are a lot of hand to mouth kind of snacky products out there that when you actually look at the number of servings inside that package there is two to five servings in there but we kind of think about it as eating the whole thing, so really pay close attention to that.. .
The other piece is to understand that the announce of the nutrients in there often times are in relationship to a certain caloric load for the day, so for example you will see in the bottom it will will say something like Vitamin C, 25%, well that is a relationship to a 2000 calorie diet. Well, most people are not really watching calories, most people do not know what a calorie is, most people do not know how many 2000 calories are, so having some kind of a percentage of that number is essentially meaningless.. .
Really pay attention to the ingredients. Just skip the rest of that and go down to the ingredients list, that is even more fine print, it looks like for more products. You want to be able to identify the real food in that ingredients’ list. You do not want to see a whole lot of words in there that you cannot understand. If you have got to get out a dictionary to figure out what you are eating there is a problem. So generally what you will find when you go to the grocery store is if you pick one up and you cannot understand whatever is in that thing you can out it down and pick up another one on the shelf, ‘Oh! I get what most of what that stuff is’.. .
You are generally going to be better off the more you can get towards a real food. If you can shop the perimeter of your grocery store there are no labels there, makes it easy, you know why? It is real food, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meats, that is the main part of what you should be building your meals out of anyway and you do not have to worry about a food label.

In the case of a deviation in labeling, the machines should be stopped, the right labels should be placed, and the defective load should be isolated and relabeled (CFIA, 1997b).

The best way to eliminate ambiguity is to disregard the name and select shrimp based on the actual count per pound, which is clearly labeled on the packaging.

She really needs to slow down with this video. I process things very fast and talk very fast, but nothing she said was actually properly said with understandable wording….”trans fat is a biggie” really? She obviously has a lot of knowledge in this area, but is not very good relaying it in a video.
There is zero nutritional value in this product and it contains a lot of pure cane sugar. Which is more addictive than cocaine and very unhealthy Do not consume pasteurized milk of any kind — ever. Because once milk has been pasteurized it’s more or less “dead,” and offers little in terms of real nutritional value to anyone, whether you show signs of intolerance to the milk or not.
Valuable enzymes are destroyed, vitamins (such as A, C, B6 and B12) are diminished, fragile milk proteins are radically transformed from health nurturing to unnatural amino acid configurations that can actually worsen your health. Thank you very much for the information! Food labels have gotten ridiculous with false information! Just started the January challenge Code Red Rebel for life!
In my Organic Chemistry class I learned what those mystery words on nutrition labels are. Starting the 10 pound take down challenge with real food, water and sleep! Thanks, Cristy, for reminding me that I am worth it.
Since joining the Code Red lifestyle, I have learned so much about what is real and what is frankinfood. It’s crazy that I look at everything these days and how often I see a label that says sugar free but in reality it has hidden sugars in the ingredients list. This is a great video Cristy, thank you.

it’s absolutely crazy the weird ingredients that are in foods I LOVE this!!! I have always felt that way and had been told by people in the past “but it’s…. diced tomatoes (for example) those are healthy. it’s fine!!!”
She really needs to slow down with this video. I process things very fast and talk very fast, but nothing she said was actually properly said with understandable wording….”trans fat is a biggie” really? She obviously has a lot of knowledge in this area, but is not very good relaying it in a video.
I love these type of videos and this one in particular, everyone should be educated on the basics of being healthy such as knowing how to read food labels. I think this will help a lot of people!:)
Since joining the Code Red lifestyle, I have learned so much about what is real and what is frankinfood. It’s crazy that I look at everything these days and how often I see a label that says sugar free but in reality it has hidden sugars in the ingredients list. This is a great video Cristy, thank you.
In my Organic Chemistry class I learned what those mystery words on nutrition labels are. Starting the 10 pound take down challenge with real food, water and sleep! Thanks, Cristy, for reminding me that I am worth it.
Thank you very much for the information! Food labels have gotten ridiculous with false information! Just started the January challenge Code Red Rebel for life!
I was just talking about this yesterday in the groups! Stating on the perimeter of a grocery store keeps you away from having to read labels.:) Love this video and so important to let it sink in. Thank you!

There is zero nutritional value in this product and it contains a lot of pure cane sugar. Which is more addictive than cocaine and very unhealthy
Do not consume pasteurized milk of any kind — ever.
Finally the eradication of beneficial bacteria through the pasteurization process actually ends up promoting pathogens. (In the fage. ) and you talk about nutrition. Humm.
if one doesn’t eat enough vegetable and fruits, can centrum help with those?
also amazing eyes and overwhelming racist white teeth, overall 10/10
+Becca Bristow I thought FULLY hydrogenated oils weren’t trans fats and they were ok to eat? You said no hydrogenated oils were allowed
