  • Raw kale and most cruciferous (cabbage family) veggies have thyroid suppressing qualities when eaten raw. Cooking is required to deactivate these compounds. Instead of kale you could use organic Romain lettuce which is highly nutrient dense. Too much raw spinach is not good either due to oxalic acid content. Can use parsley instead.
    I have known people that have blown out their thyroid making kale smoothies every day. Not recommended!!!

  • Great video! I love the way vegetables are cooked in Chinese (and Asian) dishes. First of all, if you have the freshest vegetables, you can never go wrong. A quick stir fry in a screaming hot pan cooks the vegetables thoroughly without turning it into mush, and it is dressed with a simple, simple sauce to complement the flavors. Nothing is ever drowned in cheese sauce or something heavy that muddies the flavors. Morning glory (water spinach) with shrimp paste is the greatest thing in the world. Trust me, I am Vietnamese! That is how we eat morning glory.

  • Hi Sara! I loved this video, but, to be honest, my MOST favorite videos are when you have a “base” recipe (like in your last Waffles video). I really like having a base recipe in my toolbox that I can customize. I think it makes cooking easier and makes the cook more comfortable in the kitchen. With this video, I have 3 SEPERATE recipes to remember. But with the waffles, I have 1 base with small additions for customizing. I was really hoping this video would be the same (giving a base recipe with mix-in and variations). I think my anxiety in the kitchen comes from feeling like I need to do things to the exact recipe, and providing baseline makes me more comfortable in just adding what I have on hand. Anyway, LOVE your channel, and would love to see more “base” recipes!

    I can’t go without yogurt….. I have to add to something and eat. Also tumeric I add it to most of my food and for my skin too. For cooking I use pure coconut oil �� it has antimicrobial properties. And I eat garlic with my �� salads and ginger with my morning chai��

  • There are so many videos made about the health benefits of kale. My appeal to everyone who promotes vegetables like kale, which fall under the brassica or cruciferous group of vegetables should be accompanied by with a warning for people with thyroid dysfunction. They maybe superfoods for some but exacerbate thyroid problems for others. It is important to note that they should never be eaten raw by thyroid sufferers. I wonder if kale can be cooked��

  • Mono-eating has side effects. Kale is amazing BUT!!!! It blocks estrogen and iodine absorbotion. So eventually your chemistry will get knocked out of whack. Spinach blocks calcium absorbotion. Nearly everything has a slight negative effect. Cycle your greens, I have personal examples of people who ate the same greens every day and after many months ended up at the doctor trying to figure out weird issues. One friend who drank kale smoothies daily for an entire year ended up getting extreme hot flashes. She was convinced she was going through early menopause. Doctors were confused. I asked her about her diet. She explained about the kale. The lab results showed her estrogen levels were extremely low. I told her to lay off the kale. Two months later all was well. No meds needed. Cycle your greens. Nature knows how to preserve itself and that includes adding a bit of poison to everything.

  • For the drink, the yogurt and the milk contain calcium while spinach is rich in iron, thus they cannot be mixed together. Calcuim limits the absorption of iron in the body.

  • For people looking to gain muscle mass, along with this meal I advise you to prepare this protein shake.

    Ingredients:

    2 Bananas preferably somewhat ripe to provide the sweet touch

    200 milliliters of milk or yogurt of your choice

    1 small level tablespoon of pure cocoa free of sugar and milk (do not add much because it is bitter and may taste bad)

    Ice to your liking

    A small teaspoon of cinnamon, is optional

    PS: Cinnamon is not good to consume in excess or much in people who suffer from high blood pressure “hypertension” use it in moderation.

  • You said that the total amount of daily consumed sugars is about 30g. However only your breakfast consists of half a banana, half an apple and oats. In total you consume more than half of your daily sugars (about 7g from half a banana + 7-8g from half an apple + 1g from oats = 15g). So, if you copied (ideally) your breakfast for all meals in a day(don’t know how many meals you have), with an average of 5 meals you end up with a surplass of 15g * 5 = 75g 30g = 45g.
    My conclusion: you can’t say you eat a low sugar breakfast if it contains most of your daily sugars. (I know that fructose is “healthier” than white sugar).

Of course in China they eat a lot of vegetable dishes but they are often more lightly seasoned than others, so whereas I can know a yuxiangrousi from a mapodoufu and search for it easily, I would still get confused on vegetables, as they all seemed to be greens with some white parts. They would say one day it’s called called little white vegetable, the next one would be big white vegetable (but we call it baobaocai in dialect, nice, almost the same but different) and then the next one is called green vegetable… I ended up making aubergine all the time, even though it sucks up too much oil both for me and my kitchen and still doesn’t taste like the real thing unless I full on deep fry it. And it doesn’t fit the mysterious yin and yang balance that Chinese people are always talking about, too rich surely… So now when corona is over maybe I can get to an Asian supermarket and make one of these!   • About calcium: I doubt that those high recommendations are correct because recommendations vary from country to country and it might have something to do with the dairy industry being an influence. I try not to rely on fortified things and to get from whole plants what I can. So if I eat normally I get about 300mg calcium per day and I got my blood tested and my calcium is completely fine:)

  • Cheese and eggs feed bacteria and viruses, then, cause disease and symptoms later. The real challenge is to create a delicious recipe that doesn’t use cheese and eggs.

  • You said that the total amount of daily consumed sugars is about 30g. However only your breakfast consists of half a banana, half an apple and oats. In total you consume more than half of your daily sugars (about 7g from half a banana + 7-8g from half an apple + 1g from oats = 15g). So, if you copied (ideally) your breakfast for all meals in a day(don’t know how many meals you have), with an average of 5 meals you end up with a surplass of 15g * 5 = 75g 30g = 45g.
    My conclusion: you can’t say you eat a low sugar breakfast if it contains most of your daily sugars. (I know that fructose is “healthier” than white sugar).

  • These look great. Pie crusts are a nightmare here in the tropics. I use two cups cooked, cooled brown rice mixed with one beaten egg and one cup shredded cheddar. Mix that up well, press into your pan of choice, and fill with your ingredients. Bake at 350oF for 40 minutes or until a knife blade comes out clean when inserted in the middle. Works for us!

  • Raw kale and most cruciferous (cabbage family) veggies have thyroid suppressing qualities when eaten raw. Cooking is required to deactivate these compounds. Instead of kale you could use organic Romain lettuce which is highly nutrient dense. Too much raw spinach is not good either due to oxalic acid content. Can use parsley instead.
    I have known people that have blown out their thyroid making kale smoothies every day. Not recommended!!!

    Add one scoop of whey protein isolate (25 gms protein) mix the whole thing together and eat.

My appeal to everyone who promotes vegetables like kale, which fall under the brassica or cruciferous group of vegetables should be accompanied by with a warning for people with thyroid dysfunction. They maybe superfoods for some but exacerbate thyroid problems for others. It is important to note that they should never be eaten raw by thyroid sufferers. I wonder if kale can be cooked��

However, that said, and having now taken the very first batch out of the oven, you forgot to warn us newbies about ‘quiche leak’ where the filling gets out a bit at the bottom of the pastry because I was not too quick getting them into the oven. I think in my case some parchment paper underneath the mini-quiches would have saved the day and meant easier extraction. Still, there is no stopping me now.

  • Hmm in Vancouver Gai Lan is a common veg in almost any grocery store, but generally not as thick as you had. The usual prep is to fry it and then hit it with a little bit of water to let the steam finish the cooking. It is then plated and Oyster sauce poured over top. It is a little sweet, but very tasty. The leafy tops with the oyster sauce is the best.

  • For the drink, the yogurt and the milk contain calcium while spinach is rich in iron, thus they cannot be mixed together. Calcuim limits the absorption of iron in the body.

We stir fry garlic and shallots with a bit oil, and then add oyster sauce, red chili, fish sauce/salt, a bit sugar, toasted shrimp paste and then add the raw veggie directly. Cover for 1 minute, and then stir a bit. Done. The morning glory will be crispy and delicious!

  • I love quiche. Costco actually has a two quiche package. It comes with a broccoli cheddar quiche and a spinach artichoke quiche. Both are made with egg whites. Even my carnivore son will eat these.
    However, your quiche looks ten times better. Plus, you make it look so easy to do.

  • Can you speak to how much probiotics to eat? I follow Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen checklist to understand the serving sizes for flax seeds, fruit, etc. but he doesn’t touch on probiotics. Would love to know your thoughts! Thanks:)

  • may I say you’re awesome Sarah? I love your recipes. You are so bubbly, making food prep easy, and fun. You really should be on Food Network channel.

  • Mono-eating has side effects. Kale is amazing BUT!!!! It blocks estrogen and iodine absorbotion. So eventually your chemistry will get knocked out of whack. Spinach blocks calcium absorbotion. Nearly everything has a slight negative effect. Cycle your greens, I have personal examples of people who ate the same greens every day and after many months ended up at the doctor trying to figure out weird issues. One friend who drank kale smoothies daily for an entire year ended up getting extreme hot flashes. She was convinced she was going through early menopause. Doctors were confused. I asked her about her diet. She explained about the kale. The lab results showed her estrogen levels were extremely low. I told her to lay off the kale. Two months later all was well. No meds needed. Cycle your greens. Nature knows how to preserve itself and that includes adding a bit of poison to everything.

  • They all sound delicious but I’ve got to say that the second one is the one that I liked the most. It does remind me of the Greek spanakopita. Have you heard of prasopita? It’s close to spanakopita but with leeks instead of spinach and the pie is kind of sweet. I’ll taste the spinach quiche and then I might try it with leeks too.

  • Personally, I don’t like gyms. They are so crowded and I can’t do my workout there. I decided to take bodyweight training plan from NextLevelDiet. Training plan is great and I can do it from home. They also give you diet plan which supports your fitness goals.

    Ingredients:

    2 Bananas preferably somewhat ripe to provide the sweet touch

    200 milliliters of milk or yogurt of your choice

    1 small level tablespoon of pure cocoa free of sugar and milk (do not add much because it is bitter and may taste bad)

    Ice to your liking

    A small teaspoon of cinnamon, is optional

    PS: Cinnamon is not good to consume in excess or much in people who suffer from high blood pressure “hypertension” use it in moderation.
