  • Just to clarify the information about serotonin…the serotonin produced in the gut has many important functions in physiological homeostasis acting as a hormone, but it does not pass through the blood/brain barrier and therefore has no effect on serotonin receptors in the brain. Only serotonin produced IN the brain can influence mood.

  • Hey why does it seem like anything bad in person’s life is typically pinned as “not your fault”?? LOL seriously? MANY things ARE “you’re fault” no matter how many in society want to simply make one feel better about things…..Sure there are some random bad events that can blind side someone…I mean things like natural disasters or getting hit by an uninsured drunk drivers etc things that might leave someone’s life in such shambles and then perhaps one could honestly say “it is not your fault” But MORE often?     For me I found that a keto diet helped me tremendously. I used to have a diet of no fat, no salt, little meat, HIGH veg/grain/fruit. Going keto turned that model upside down. I feel so much better mentally and physically.

I’ve been taking a supplement mix of vitamin D, magnesium and calcium to help with severe ocd and anxiety I’ve been suffering over the past 6 months.   • How much L-theanine to have a significant amount of GABA release as much as 0.5mg of Xanax for example. I get anxious and depressed but taking 0.5mg Xanax saved my life. I’m able to think clearly and I never abuse it like these new age kids. Just a little makes me calm down and realize how beautiful life truly is and how it’s easier to look at things objectively rather than basing my outlook on my body’s rush of cortisol during an anxiety episode. I don’t wanna get hooked on Xanax so I want an alternative to be able to feel this happy. I feel like I’ve been deprived of GABA for years.

  • GABA works superb for me. They banned it in the UK so they can push Gabapentin. From my experience GABA crosses the blood brain barrier in some people and in others it doesn’t. The best way imo is to put the GABA powder in a soft drink and get it in your system. Although a sublingual GABA supplement also worked wonders for me.

  • I had to stop and I’m so mad because It really calmed me. Then I noticed it was making my throat itch and my My body was itching like allergy symptoms. I stopped and restarted same reaction so I just stopped today. I also noticed in the middle of the night I would wake up coughing like crazy also a side effect of the L Theanine I encountered. As for using Ashwaghanda was extremely calming 450mg form and 600mg liquid form two different brands I experienced both irregular heart beats with both.     Why the disagreement? Well, a few things. Some studies used a molecule just like GABA in lieu of GABA, assuming the 1 extra OH group featured on 3-hydroxybutyric acid wouldn’t make a difference, but it may have. Since many studies don’t report the type of GABA used, it’s hard to compare results. Some studies administered their GABA by injecting it straight into animal’s body cavities, others by injecting it into veins.

    Most importantly, the BBB permeability of GABA has never been studied in humans!

    What we do know is that human’s BBB contains transporters for GABA, implying that GABA can enter/exit the brain through these channels. In mice it was found that GABA was removed from the brain 17 times faster than it entered.

    This could explain the conflicting study results. It may not be that GABA cannot enter the brain, but just that it’s removed from it very rapidly.

    GABA as a Supplement

    Even if it cannot cross the BBB however, GABA could still be affecting your brain.

    The enteric nervous system (ENS) is the network of neurons that control your gastrointestinal system. The ENS contains many GABA receptors, and GABA itself, and is connected to the brain through the vagal nerve. It’s been proposed that ingested GABA is able to affect the body even without crossing the BBB through its interactions with the ENS.

  • Can concur. I take sun-theanine (supposed to be a better version of L-theanine) and it certainly works. I used to be a big rx pill head, so I was wary of an otc supplement. I was shocked at the effects of L-theanine. I recommend trying this for anxiety before getting on anything hard, like benzos.

Excercise makes sense but for imbalances it’s only part of the solution and in my case can spin me up.   • Ive had depression and anxiety for 20 years, and been on meds.I’ve found swimming helps, and aqua aerobics, plus a sauna and steam afterwards. Try and walk a little daily, and sit in the garden. Listen to a podcast, if bored, or read the paper in the garden. Depression and anxiety can cause lack of motivation, but the key is not to listen to the neg thoughts, take action, shush the negative.thoughts. The right supplement can do wonders.

  • I drink just black tea (dunno the numbers of different blands, but it just works fine) for l theanine, sometimes lemon balm infusion to exchange things up, both relaxes me and dont make me sleepy.

  • I take both and can tell when one is missing… GABA does obviously get in ur gut where a lot of serotonin receptors are. So the whole brain barrier is kinda irrelevant

  • Theanine made me feel too weird. Like a stimulant effect not sedative. I could barely hold a conversation and my ability to focus was destroyed. I even tried to lower the dosages to 1/3 of what was recommended and got the same reaction. I just gave it away and my friend loves it and uses it on her aggressive dog too. Note I have adverse reactions to everything so unless you do too, I guess you can expect you’ll be fine.

  • Thank you so much for this video. I’ve dealt with anxiety and depression for most of my life. For a long time I was responding well to the psychiatric medication my doctor prescribed. I was on Prozac, an SSRI. I’m not against psych meds at all, in fact they really helped me for a long time and I’m so grateful for them. However, recently they have stopped working for me.

    the first time I weaned off of them was last year. I had been stable on the medication for over 3 years. & I had reached a place in my life where I felt pretty stable & secure, so I told my doctor to help me wean off. The slow pace of lowering my dose as well as the doctor’s advice helped me remain stable and safe during the process. Previously I’d tried to go off them myself & had terrible withdrawal symptoms (like all of a sudden I had really bad depression, even worse than before I started the meds)

    Anyway this brings me to my point. I was stable for a year off of all psychiatric meds. But then my mom passed away. Of course, the loss of my mom threw my entire life out of whack. So I made a psych appointment and got back on Prozac. However this time the Prozac actually made my anxiety & grief WORSE. I was only on a low dose but I was having the worst panic attacks of my life. So I just quit cold turkey. It was such a low dose that I didn’t experience withdrawals at all. I felt SO MUCH better within 2 weeks.

    But even though the panic attacks are gone now, I still have really bad anxiety at times. It causes me to avoid things like socializing, making doctors appointments, leaving my apartment, and other adult functioning human tasks.

    So to help out, I’ve started taking supplements. So far, St. John’s wort, ashwaghanda, & valerian have been the most effective for me.

    I’ve also tried saffron extract, but I’m not sure if I notice any effects.

    I just ordered 5-htp, l-theanine, and l-dopa/mucuna extract. I’m excited to see how they work, especially the mucuna. It sounds very promising.

    I’m also on a multivitamin because some nutritional deficiencies can contribute to anxiety and depression.

  • As a non-diagnosed ADD person, L-theanine has been a complete game-changer, most people with ADHD praise L-thenine to reduce their anxiety and hyperactivity. For me and my self-diagnosed ADD, L-theanine gives me the energy and focus I need to get through my day, without it I’m slugging, tired, fatigued, uninterested, unproductive, unwilling to share my opinion and ideas, and around the afternoon I usually crawl back to bed. L-theanine makes me into the active person I used to be as a teenager, I only take around 100 200 mg a day and have done so for about 2 years, but the effect is clear and noticeable. I wish I had it earlier and not in my mid-30s.

  • I suffered from panic attacks after my Dad died and daily anxiety ( probably level 7 ) and knew I had to change something.

    They put me on anti-depressants and benzos ( Xanax) which came with a whole new slew of problems. I finally weened of those prescription pills and started on a natural path which seemed to work!
    High dose magnesium, high dose fish oil with Vitamin D, high dose Ashawanda and l-theanine. No drinking, keto diet, staying hydrated, meditation and a good nights sleep. The first two weeks were very difficult on me, and then one day things started clearing up.

  • 100% of the time “getting out” and exercising does wonders! Even if you’re not entirely well do some kind of movement. Swim if your joints and tendons are arthritic etc. gentle stretches can be helpful as well.

    What am I Anxious about?
    Is it coming from outside or inside?

  • I’m bad when it comes to treating anxiety, I’ve always been on the fence, saying “Everyone gets depressed and anxious.” I started having strong anxiety during menapause. Just out of the blue, deep like chest itching off the charts feeling. So I started taking 12 mg of Benadryl to ease the feelings when they happened. Now that menapause is ebbing off, it’s not as bad, but now that I’ve experienced true anxiety, and understand it better, I’d say to try natural products, as long as your physician isn’t concerned about reactions with medications you might be taking. Currently I take turmeric to help with symptoms of RA/OA. It helps with painful swelling which takes the pressure off my joints. My RA isn’t severe enough for like Humira, which I’m thankful for because that stuff scares me a little. ( low immunity risk for cancers ��). Thanks so much for sharing.   • A good tip for taking gaba or ltheanine is to crack the capsule open and squeez the powder under the tongue and let it dissolve then it will instantly get into your blood stream vs just swallowing a capsule and waiting a few hours for it to take affect.
