David S. Ludwig, MD, PhD, is a practicing endocrinologist, researcher, and professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health. He received a PhD and an MD from Stanford University School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at Boston Children’s Hospital.. Dr. Ludwig also directs the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. His research focuses on the effects of diet on hormones, metabolism and body weight. He developed a novel “low glycemic load” diet (i.e., one that decreases the surge in blood sugar after meals) for the treatment of obesity-related diseases. In addition, his group has done some of the original studies linking sugar-sweetened beverages and fast food to excessive weight gain, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.. Described as an “obesity warrior” by Time magazine, Dr. Ludwig has fought for fundamental policy changes to restrict junk food advertising directed at young children, improve the quality of national nutrition programs, and increase insurance reimbursement for obesity prevention and treatment.. Dr. Ludwig is Principal Investigator on numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, has published over 150 scientific articles, and served for 10 years as Contributing Writer for JAMA. He has also written several books for the public, including ‘Ending The Food Fight’ (2007), ‘Always Hungry?’ (2016) and the cookbook ‘Always Delicious’ (2018).

° If you’re active (doing about an hour of exercise a clay), eat five servings of Smart Proteins and five servings of Smart Carbohydrates (of which at least two are fruit and the rest whole grain foods, including one starchy veggie, if you wish).
This is about 10 to 13 g of fiber per 1000 calories, which can be obtained from five or more servings of fruits and vegetables and six or more servings of whole grain breads, cereals, and legumes.
The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) recommendations are that 45% to 65% of total calories should come from carbohydrates.3 A person should take around 14 g of dietary fiber per 1000 calories eaten per day from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
It recommends that a “source” of fiber should contain 3 g 100 g−1 (or 100ml−1) or at least 3 g in the “reasonable expected daily intake of the food”, i.e. the amount that could reasonably be expected to be eaten in one day.
These weight loss maintainers consumed more fiber-rich foods such as vegetables (4.9 servings/day) and whole-grain products (2.2 servings/day) compared to less than 1 daily serving of vegetables and whole grains for the weight regainers [21].
Five hundred calories of black beans, rice, and some salad with a chunk of avocado will fill you quite nicely, while it can take more than twice the caloric quantity of fiber-deficient edibles to reach satisfaction.
So, to reach the target intake specified in the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans of 25 to 38 grams of fiber per day (more specifically, 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories), try to eat foods in their natural state.
One cup of oatmeal contains 8 grams of fiber, a medium pear with skin has 4 grams of fiber, a cup of vegetarian chili has 14 grams of fiber, a slice of whole wheat bread contains 2 grams of fiber, and a cup of chopped, steamed broccoli has 6 grams of fiber.
Fiber to Calories: As I covered in Chapter 5, I recommend that you consume at least 35 to 50 grams of fiber, ideally from fresh, locally grown organic vegetables, nuts, and seeds.

Hello there, have you considered Custokebon Secrets yet? Just simply do a google search search. On there you will find an awesome suggestions about how you can lost a ton of fat. Why not give it a shot? maybe it’ll work for you too.
Guys, build muscle doesn’t need to be difficult (I used to feel it did). I’ll give you some advice right now. Search a diet plan called Fenoboci Diet Plan. Seriously, that diet plan has transformed my entire life. I probably should not even be mentioning it because I don’t want a bunch of other folks out there running the same “game” but whatever, I’m in a good mood today so I’ll share the wealth haha.
couscous is made of wheat. for those of you who are avoiding wheat, quinoa is the very best option. it is higher protein than your usual grain dishes and has lots of micronutrients as well. it is gluten-free and i’ve never heard of anyone being allergic to it. recipes look great joanna! keep up the great work!
I understand that processing the fibres changes their properties, but what does consuming vegetables blended as part of a smoothie do to the nutrients?
Excellent way to get the message across! Tired of people looking at me like I’m an idiot when I try to explain why I lost 50 lbs and feel like a teenager of the 1970’s and I’m in my 50’s! Wake up America!
thanks. i always like the lectures on this channel. but i have a different problem where i did not find a solution yet: i lost 25kg on keto on the first year, which is great. but on the second year i gained back 5kg on keto. so keto is not working anymore. i need some kind of optimization. maybe i find it in a high-carb low fat day twice a month (not the same like cheat day with random macros).
The comment that some people are “excessive insulin producers” leading to fat storage and glucagon malfunction, while others, not so much. Excessive insulin producers via genetic trait or as a result of years of excessive carb and sugar consumption?…or some other reason?
Obesity is not a dirty word. Doctors look at it as Too many Calories In, Too little Exercise Out, when they should look at their own failure of not recognizing it as a Fat Accumulation Disorder and diagnose it as such. This can be described as Medical Negligence
Is Obesity Contagious Action on Sugar, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), I would add that Obesity is Communicable, a NCD Aseem Malhotra
… the SAD Obese Microbiome maps onto world wide Obesity Mapref Sonnenburg Labs, evidence shows that the Obese Gut Microbiome may be transferable Stanford University
… Starving the Gut Microbiome causes “Species Extinction” from 2500 species to 400 as seen in long term SAD compliant Obese people.
… Hyper-palatable foods = “Less Fiber” and “Sweeter” starving our gut bacteria which then eats “You” – your stomach gastric mucin and migrate into small intestines creating dysbiosis, etc…
i have yet to see results considering im new to trying to loose fat along w.cooking. but just wanted to say i love your channel!! u gave great advice, the recipes you give are amazing, and ur workout are good.
This Weight loss green store tea has been an added resource in maintaining weight loss. I love this, I am a tea drinker, and this tea was no different to me to have during my day. I drink at least to cups a day and feel full. It has helped suppress my appetite and is not too bitter tasting.
Thank you so very much, Sir! I truly appreciate the time and effort that you take out of your filled schedule. I would donate as much money as I could on Patreon if I wasn’t a broke student.:(
What is hard for me to figure out is that we still question insulin as a weight gain hormone…He shows this with the rats quite clearly & the picture of the autopsied rats is where he shows it.
Hello Joanna, I just love your ideas. Though I have not tried them I will be soon. everything looks so delishous and it’s. thank you for working so hard to help us all. I am learning a lot.
Thank you for being such a positive influence to me Joanna. You have helped me alot. I can send my creations of your recipes onto social media. I love them all and they have helped me alot.
The first recipe you use Chinese leek no scallion!!!! You don’t even have the right name for the ingredients you use. The flavor of the leek is way too strong to eat raw!!!!
Can we take a moment and appreciate THE MUSIC. I literally want to make salads and take a spin or a dance class. I love it! YouTube gold, healthy food prep and dance music. Great combo
This lecture would be great if large parts of it were not in English. Translate the Medicalise into common English and it would be more helpful. This guy suffers from a common problem: failing to consider the relationship between the syntax and vocabulary of the presentation and who is actually being addressed. Isn’t the purpose of a lecture to communicate a vital message rather than send the listener flying to a medical dictionary every other sentence? A really “wok” person would consider the person being spoken to. He would be sure to give the quick, plain answer, and only then follow it with the long and perhaps labyrinthine explanation. If I were giving such a lecture (I have done so many times in my field) I would want the listener to have the answers to a few specific, critical questions: Specifically, exactly, what is the basic message I can carry away? How can I apply it to accomplish what I have in mind? Short on theory, long on practice. That’s how I see it. Say with the goal being when all is said and done the listener knows in the most basic form what you know. Otherwise, most listeners won’t stay to the end.
Yeah, if you are trying to lose weight, make your own sandwiches for lunch because supermarket sandwiches can contain up 600 calories in just 2 sandwiches and they don’t always fill you up!
I’m trying to eat 300-calorie meals every 2 hours totaling 1800 calories to help me lose weight. I’m having trouble finding complete meals that are 300 Calories or less, can you help me?
the only criticism of Dr. Ludwig’s study he covers at the end of this talk is we need to know the estimated body fatness of his participants before he has them eating the measured foods he provided & the “heavy water” he gave them. Clearly they could have drank water from the tap & diluted their consumption of heavy water. There is no perfect research study. I wanted to know the estimated “body fatness” of the participants due to old information I acquired that lean people burn more calories at rest than heavier people because reportedly muscle tissue has a higher metabolic rate than fat tissue. I think the work of Dr. Herman Pontzer with the Hadza shows some interesting results with folks that are very thin & very physically active.
Just discovered your channel X I am on a weight loss journey and your videos are so useful and your recipes are super easy especially since I am a student haha thanks x
5:15 40% reduction to 30% is NOT low fat!!! low fat would be around 10% or less. So whats presented there is actually high fat, high refined carb foods. Yet again these MD’s fall into the trap of labeling them low fat. A banana or apple has 2-3% cal from fat.. now that is low fat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfFoqXJouOI
Good to know that food sensitivity tests are extremely poor right now. I always kinda suspected that but after hearing about them so much I was starting to get interested in taking one
The portions are so small for me! Maybe that’s because I eat like 2000calories in a day and I guess is weid because I’m 163cm and 47kg and with this amount of calories I dont gain weight. I’ m not even an active person. So…
12:53 Note that the elevated levels of epinephrine * is what most people know as ADRENALIN, the ;fight or flight’ hormone. Some people will experience this surge in adrenaline as anxiety (‘flight’), while others will experience it as an urge to express aggression (‘flight’).???Could this help explain what is happening in society??? Prescriptions for anti-anxiety medication have soared. Aggressive behavior, from schoolyard and workplace bullying to aggressive and dangerous driving to other acts of violence also appear to have risen sharply over the past few decades.

And ‘Our Descent into Madness: Modern Diets and the Global Mental Health Crisis; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXlVfwJ6RQU
*These levels are significantly higher around 4-5 hours after consuming a high glycemic index meal compared to a moderate glcymeic meal, with the lower glycemic meal showing significantly lower levels of epinephrine.
This is pure gold. I feel like I found treasure, honestly. Thank you so much for the work you do, it’s unbelievably helpful for better understanding my health issues.
So many people struggle with their weight loss attempts simply because they’ve reduced their calorie level back so incredibly low that they’re hardly providing enough calories for their body to function. Each recipe has been designed using ingredients that provide the highest metabolic thermo-charge which means that just by eating them you cause the body to burn off more calories. It could have a profound positive effect on your life and health. https://plus.google.com/b/100192683521661748811/100192683521661748811/posts/7CVXdWwsH7Y
I noted the previous lectures information that Gluten vastly increased the creation of fat as opposed to no gluten, or insulin alone. Likewise the recent idea that ketosis caused coupling in muscle cells, and uncoupling in fat cells and thus fat cells burned more energy,
What if you DON’T fart much? I’ve been plant based for 6 months and rarely fart, unless I eat onions. I’m amazed by all the foods that you listed that can cause farting. But also amazed by the fact that it doesn’t happen to me…anymore.
Specifically, about the claim that “power production is mostly/basically genetics”.
Even though, genetics is the ultimate/fundamental limiting factor (obviously), I think the statement, as is being stated, is absolutely incorrect.
Esp. since his later ‘explanation’ of the formula is actually more-or-less correct!
I think he doesn’t realise the self-contradiction he is making.
Anyway, I haven’t been able to find any literature to support his primary statement.
What’s you take/opinion/analysis on this/of his statement?
P.S.: Full disclosure, I have an anti-Rippetoe bias after partaking of his countless videos, podcasts, whatever…
Since you are into spreading scientifically-oriented opinions about exercise/sports, and have a higher degree in a related field, I thought you should take a look at this & perhaps comment.
I am 18. 1m60cm. I was 74kg, I just ate vegetables and just run 30 mininute/ 3 times a week. and I finally got 49kg until February 2015. but I from then on, I got 16kg. sometimes I eat really alot like gorging. but my everyday meal is full of vegetables and carb… I usually eat sweet potatoes and tomatoes..eggs… I think my body is adapted already,, that’s why even I tried the food style like before,,,it doesn’t works.. help me please
This is completely off topic and I apologize if you have already touched on this but I haven’t been able to find the exact information needed on the cold plunge topic is it possible to do a daily cold bath without affecting hypertrophy and the adaptation process for muscle growth thanks so much for the time man your info has really helped someone like me with very little education
It looks so yummy but it’s hard to make my brother love vegetables cause he will pick the high protein things more than veggies you know he’s actually 17, but act like 7
I make this for when I want to lose weight, here’s the recipee: 1.Take two whole grain slices of bread and toast them with or without butter, your choice 2. Choose your choice of meat/protein, it could be eggs, chicken breast, tuna or beef but make sure to cook it with little oil or no at all 3. Take 5-10 pieces of lettuce, and place them on your bread. I usually put on 7 4. Cut up tomatoes and also put them on. Then choose whatever other veggies you want 5. You can put some sauce on the bread too. But make sure to use only 1-2 tablespoon of the sauce. 6. Basically I would eat this on my diet days, and would lose from 1-2 kg in 3 days. I want to not overwhelm myself with a too strict diet so that’s why I make this ( tip: drink a full glass of water 30 minutes before eating)
Due to a friend, I searched Google for the “sowo hope site”. It’s definitely the best program and the best deal I’ve ever previously seen. This quickly brings incredible results to users. I’ve already slipped 14 pounds in less than 7 days.
The processed food company grows a lot of extra wheat and corn and potatoes. The junk food is getting sweeter and softer. Even if you don’t have good teeth, you can eat it. The processed food in the supermarket is much more than meat and vegetables because it is easy to store.
Can’t eat peppers. Can you make recipes with a wider variety of ingredients? They all seem to have tomatoes, peppers in them. Lots use mushrooms.too. Not everyone can eat those. You cool down those eggs and potatoes too, right? Cause if not….bleck!
@***** How do u use/store the rest of the avocado (remaining 8 portions)? Would you consider 1/8 of an avocado as one serving for fat? I realised the last recipe lacks healthy fats
what is with that study that looks intentionally designed to make carbs look bad?
All the carbs on the Low GI meal are whole foods. The next two meals are both using several teaspoons of highly refined simple carbs. The test seems flawed in that they could have used higher GI whole foods rather than taking what could have still been ok breakfasts and then just adding a tablespoon of refined sugar on to each meal.
Can I eat something after 9:00 pm because I work to 12:00 am and I have my diner at 7:[email protected] pm if yes can u please send me a some ideas thank you
However, he needs to study the history of how the sugar, human-invented seed-oil, and grain industries and other groups lobbied politicians, paid scientists to do “research”, gave donations to universities, and gave money to non-profit “health” organizations. This continues to this day.
For the above, he needs to read: (1) “The Case Against Sugar” by Gary Taubes. (2) “The Big Fat Surprise” by Nina Teicholz. (3) an online search for < fettke AND "temperance movement" > (4) an online search for < fettke AND "temperance movement" AND salt >
I watched this video about 7 hours ago, just farted and ive never been more excited over a fart as i wondered if it was due to the sugar alcohols in my protein powder
Eating something quite sweet, like chocolate, I notice for me creates an Immediate strong hunger for more, so much so I can eat the whole block of chocolate immediately. That first bite seems to create a ravenous hunger for more of it. The beauty of the Keto diet is that there is no volume of food restriction, but eventually you lose your appetite and end up eating quite a lot less calories in the day. I planned to lose 9kg and ended up losing 18kg and had to find a way to put weight back on.
23:23 What happens when we shut off the supply of glucose from the diet (via sugars and starches) and switch to a LCHF diet, how dies the brain get fed while ketone levels are still low? Dr. Ludwig says that one can expect to lose about a pound of ‘lean mass’. Yet muscle is not the only lean mass in the body. Dr. Jason Fung’s presentations on YouTube, and those by his partner in Intensive Dietary Interventions, Megan Ramos, both cover this in more detail.
I can’t stand the taste of water will it be o.k to put sweet and low in it for a sweetener..thank you for all your tips…I lose the weight is just trying to keep it of
Maybe I have missed it and correct me if I am wrong but where they tracking the activity level of these mice? Because the difference in TDEE could very well be down to how much they moved around and the High GI group might have been much more tired and less active as a result. I agree that psychologically GI plays a huge role in losing weight just as it is very much a main factor in health and body composition. On the pure changes to BMR I am still on the fence, does anybody know if they made sure that the activity level was accounted for?
hihi!!really love n appreciate this kind of video! teach and also with calories provided!!! thank you so muchh… hope ur video always have the calories calculation.. bcz hard to find n get this info in other video! thanks love it!!
Your dishes are great, really, very tasty and creative, but in the oposite, the music you use I am sorry, but I always have to turn the volume off. But the foos is great congrats.
The food manufacturers discovered a long time ago that sugars & refined starches are physically addictive. They are no different than the cigarette manufacturers that spent incredible sums of money to make cigarettes as addictive as possible.

I don’t think i will ever like pumpkin lol:P Hey man, careful of those frozen berries. i don’t know if you heard of the hepatitis A that was found in some mixed berries here in australia? Apparently there are some really dodgy screening methods in place here and frozen berries are very high risk because they are imported and not cooked:/ I tried that coleslaw mix once but then just opted for lettuce and spinach:P Great vid man!

Hello there, have you considered Custokebon Secrets yet? Just simply do a google search search. On there you will find an awesome suggestions about how you can lost a ton of fat. Why not give it a shot? maybe it’ll work for you too.
Please do not throw away your time andbucks and effort on fat losssupplements or lotions because their results if any are simply just non permanent.
Thanks for this Joanna! Please continue to make this kind of recipes as I am searching for easy to do or cook meals to bring at work!
Wake up America!
thanks. i always like the lectures on this channel.
but i have a different problem where i did not find a solution yet:
i lost 25kg on keto on the first year, which is great.
but on the second year i gained back 5kg on keto. so keto is not working anymore. i need some kind of optimization.
maybe i find it in a high-carb low fat day twice a month (not the same like cheat day with random macros).
The comment that some people are “excessive insulin producers” leading to fat storage and glucagon malfunction, while others, not so much. Excessive insulin producers via genetic trait or as a result of years of excessive carb and sugar consumption?…or some other reason?
Obesity is not a dirty word. Doctors look at it as Too many Calories In, Too

i have yet to see results considering im new to trying to loose fat along w.cooking. but just wanted to say i love your channel!! u gave great advice, the recipes you give are amazing, and ur workout are good.
The fact that medical authorities have perpetuated these myths for so long now makes me question everything else I hear on other subjects.
I would donate as much money as I could on Patreon if I wasn’t a broke student.:(
What is hard for me to figure out is that we still question insulin as a weight gain hormone…He shows this with the rats quite clearly & the picture of the autopsied rats is where he shows it.
ummm joanna, i like your recipes, but… the ingredients are kinda hard to find in my country:(:(, can you give me some advice or another options?
Great combo
Hi Joanna my name is Jasmine and I love eating healthy good me and my husband we go to park and work out I loss summer me my husband can’t have sait
That was great. It means I can effectively lower my energy intake by 3xx kcal only changing macro proportion from carbs most to fat most!
Anybody know what is Fenoboci Diet Plan about? I hear lots of people lost a ton of weight with Fenoboci Diet Plan (do a google search).
This is just what I needed! Thank you very much, Jo! And could you please also make the video for dinner, break fast, and snacks as well? Thank you.
The portions are so small for me!
Maybe that’s because I eat like 2000calories in a day and I guess is weid because I’m 163cm and 47kg and with this amount of calories I dont gain weight. I’ m not even an active person. So…
Where did you get your knifes?? These are awesome recipes, Thanks for sharing. I’m on a weight loss journey to lose 65 pounds…
Dr. Georgia Ede ‘Mood and Memory: How Sugar Affects Brain Chemistry’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8eR0R3sMHw
@Andy Galpin
What’s your opinion reg. this video?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMgyXwgfncE
I am 18. 1m60cm. I was 74kg, I just ate vegetables and just run 30 mininute/ 3 times a week. and I finally got 49kg until February 2015. but I from then on, I got 16kg. sometimes I eat really alot like gorging. but my everyday meal is full of vegetables and carb… I usually eat sweet potatoes and tomatoes..eggs…
I think my body is adapted already,, that’s why even I tried the food style like before,,,it doesn’t works..
help me please
This is completely off topic and I apologize if you have already touched on this but I haven’t been able to find the exact information needed on the cold plunge topic is it possible to do a daily cold bath without affecting hypertrophy and the adaptation process for muscle growth thanks so much for the time man your info has really helped someone like me with very little education
It looks so yummy but it’s hard to make my brother love vegetables cause he will pick the high protein things more than veggies you know he’s actually 17, but act like 7
I make this for when I want to lose weight, here’s the recipee:
1.Take two whole grain slices of bread and toast them with or without butter, your choice
2. Choose your choice of meat/protein, it could be eggs, chicken breast, tuna or beef but make sure to cook it with little oil or no at all
3. Take 5-10 pieces of lettuce, and place them on your bread. I usually put on 7
4. Cut up tomatoes and also put them on. Then choose whatever other veggies you want
@ 10:50
what is with that study that looks intentionally designed to make carbs look bad?
All the carbs on the Low GI meal are whole foods. The next two meals are both using several teaspoons of highly refined simple carbs. The test seems flawed in that they could have used higher GI whole foods rather than taking what could have still been ok breakfasts and then just adding a tablespoon of refined sugar on to each meal.
Can I eat something after 9:00 pm because I work to 12:00 am and I have my diner at 7:[email protected] pm if yes can u please send me a some ideas thank you
I learned a lot about the science from this.
However, he needs to study the history of how the sugar, human-invented seed-oil, and grain industries and other groups lobbied politicians, paid scientists to do “research”, gave donations to universities, and gave money to non-profit “health” organizations. This continues to this day.
For the above, he needs to read:
(1) “The Case Against Sugar” by Gary Taubes.
(2) “The Big Fat Surprise” by Nina Teicholz.
(3) an online search for < fettke AND "temperance movement" >
(4) an online search for < fettke AND "temperance movement" AND salt >
Why remove the skins they are the super food of today particularly the greens, how many people purchase the super green powders
The skins also provide a good source of fibre hence keeping you fuller for longer
hihi!!really love n appreciate this kind of video! teach and also with calories provided!!! thank you so muchh… hope ur video always have the calories calculation.. bcz hard to find n get this info in other video! thanks love it!!
Your dishes are great, really, very tasty and creative, but in the oposite, the music you use I am sorry, but I always have to turn the volume off. But the foos is great congrats.
Barely 18min in, but dropping a comment because the mighty youtube algorithm needs to be fed, and more people need to know about Dr. Galpin’s work.
my problem i have a big appetite thats not enough for me.. what do i do and also is it okay to eat wheat rice than normal rice is it still healthy?
Can anyone please explain why iPad will not allow access to Joanna’s website: 403 Error, Not allowed on this server. Thank you
The food manufacturers discovered a long time ago that sugars & refined starches are physically addictive. They are no different than the cigarette manufacturers that spent incredible sums of money to make cigarettes as addictive as possible.

Well this is just plain out great.. Weight Loss Green Store Tea is tasty and has great effects on my body. I found myself drinking so much of this I had to get a ton more. The great taste is the perfect shield for all the health benefits it has for you. I was pleasantly surprised at the first few sips of it. Definitely a must have now.
