How to Get Happy, Scientifically Speaking 1. Prioritize “uplift”. You know what makes you feel good: working out, calling a friend who’s super positive, engaging 2. Know the difference between pleasure and happiness. Experiences devoid of meaning won’t make you truly happy. Try to envision a happy memory or beautiful place. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose. Slowly breathe out through your mouth or nose.

WOOP stands for “wish, outcome, obstacles, plan.” First, you think about a wish that you have — let’s say you want to learn a new language. So you think about that wish, and you think. People who practice being at peace and experiencing happy moments everyday, are able to overcome all the other challenges life brings on: relationships, work, family, etc According to a study by Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D. at the University of California, when people feel happy they tend to be optimistic, energetic and self-confident, which.

Get a better understanding of what these skills are all about, and learn how to improve upon your weaknesses and build your “happiness strengths.” 2. Give yourself a confidence boost. We get angry when something isn’t going the way we wanted it to and the feeling reinforces our desire for whatever it is we’re struggling to get whether it’s a job promotion we feel like we deserve or the satisfaction of winning an argument. Psychologist Simon Laham says this is why anger is a critical part of overcoming adversity.

  • A Simple Recipe for Eudaemonia or Happiness from Affective Neuroscience

HYPOTHESIS: Dopaminergic activity will stimulate endogenous opioid systems when the latter are in a non-suppressed state.
EXPLANATION AND ‘PROOF’: Activity that involves continuous positive act/outcome discrepancy or novelty (productive or meaningful behavior) while the covert musculature is inactive (a resting state) will result in heightened feeling of pleasure and arousal, or ‘eudaemonia’, ‘flow’, or ‘peak’ experience. This derives from the observation that neuro-muscular tension (or stress) inhibits endogenous opioid (pleasure) release, while relaxation accentuates it, the latter permitting opioid systems to be further stimulated by dopaminergic activity (arousal) elicited by meaningful behavior.
The reason this explanation does not appear evident from general observation is that its counterpart as ‘flow’ or ‘peak’ experience is described through literary metaphor and not scientific language and obscures the independent and dependent measures that accurately describe it. The virtue of this explanation is that it is easily testable by anyone. Just get into a relaxed state (mindfulness protocols are the best way to do this) and then exclusively pursue or anticipate pursuing productive activity for periods of a half hour or so, and voila, you will have a flow or eudaemonic experience. It is that simple.

  • I think I have the answer as to why someone doesn’t feel thrilled a month after finding 1000 $…: Money has been spent… and that person doesn’t have 1000 $ anymore…

  • Wow…this is really hard…most people who have been a benefit to me in my life ended up betraying me….does that happen to other people? Those who I’m grateful for would be people like Yoga Laugher Lady SarahGiggles who really shifted me out of the feelings of the people in sentence #1 So incredible that people have someone in their life they feel this way about, grateful. I’m grateful that those people have someone in their life that makes them feel this way. So cool.

  • the things you were talking about in this video that make us happy ARE mostly the things that you were talking about in the other video as simulations or excitements and not true happiness. so a bit contradicting and confusing!!!

  • Half of this is total bs. You can’t draw conclusions on someone picking an image and then apply it to important stuffs. As for those saying they’re happy despite very painful experiences… it’s more like a refusal to admit the failure and the weakness so they don’t lose courage.

If you admit you are weak and not happy, it will just add more negativity to an already fragile state, so yeah it’s just an illusion. Have they really lead experiment on how despair people are instead of these petty “chose a pic and come back 15 min later” tests? How many commited suicide after they claimed they were happy?

  • Actually, this is not correct. Or at least not in all cases. I know 2 paraplegics, who are NOT happy with their lives, although they were before. Dan Gilbert is evidently talking about a TENDENCY, not about a 100% rule.

  • I am grateful for the time I have to rest now, I am grateful for my health and for the efficient and warm hearth of my home.

I appreciate them both for their presence within houses, their good taste in sweets, goodly mischief, knack for good luck and their stories which are often better told than humans could make alone. Also, the selflessness is worth mention because their world seems to operate adjacent from the world of man and on principles that require selflessness. They are by definition, even if real, at least slightly mythological as well, and in this admittance they do a selfless deed naturally.

Be thankful for the dwarven folk hidden in the turtle shells

  • A long time ago I was hired by a district manager to work for my supervisor. He had broken a leg at the time and was not available for the interviews and hiring process. He was absolutely miserable with me. He sabotaged me by not training me, then harassed me by treating me like I was stupid in front of others and gave others a head start on projects, forgetting to tell me and I had to try hard to catch up. I was so happy when he finally fired me.

After watching this powerful speech, I learnt that happiness can be created because it comes within. It is true that positive thinking bring us a better life. Therefore, all of us should cultivate happiness by befriending our brain.

  • Happiness is based on our own attitude towards our life, we all became more happy if we start thinking about how we grow not thinking about how others are doing ist it?

  • I didn’t like this. I found the  ‘they made me call you’ comments worrying, this isn’t what I would call an ‘ethical’ experiment. I would have liked to see someone say no, I am not going to call anyone.  Also, as an anti-theist, I felt sorry for the guy that felt it necessary to thank Jesus for his existence, and extremely annoyed that once again that they feel the need to push religion on us at every opportunity. I also notice they employed the usual approach of selecting for maximum diversity. So overall, nice idea, terrible execution.

  • “avoid having a lack of close friendships”
yeah but what if you’re trying your best everyday and people still hate you or dump you after they’ve used you.

  • It’s better to control our action, rather than our thoughts. The quality of relationship matters more. Really amazing speech! To create happiness from now on. Let’s begin!

  • Thanks Shawn for your wonderful talk. I’ve seen your video a few years ago, but it doesn’t get old; it’s still funny and engaging, and you provided the world the ingredients and recipe for a wonderful happiness souffle (apologies for the food reference as I’m a bit hungry at the moment). Thanks again.

  • I watched this video for my BLUE 101 class at KCKCC and I found it to be very exhilarating! It’s nice when we can stop and share a moment with the person that has given joy and support to our lives. Thank you for this video! I do believe that this video can go viral. I am going to share it and challenge the people I know to take your test and continue to share this video. Wish me luck or happiness!:)

  • Great speech and these concepts are taken from Advait Vedanta. It is sad that even in his book he has not credited this Hindu philosophy which is the source for latest development in neuroscience. Nevertheless his speech is excellent and I agree with his points.

  • God Loves you, he loves you so much that he sent his son Jesus Christ to die in the cross and be raised from the dead 3 days later for our sins. Jesus is the truth and life and the only way to heaven. Accept Jesus into your heart and repent before it’s too late! Jesus is coming back soon and if you believe in him or not you will be judged and go to heaven or hell.

  • I’m in a midlife crisis. It’s true, I’m never completely happy like I used to be when I was 20 and 30. I have my happy moments but when I realize I’m happy I immediately shift to anxiety that the happy moment is going to pass and I’ll be back to unhappy. I think since my mother got sick with cancer I’m not the same, even though I’m grateful for still having her, but is always in my thoughts like a Damocles Sword. I do find that gratefulness works, I’m trying to do it every day and I somehow feel better, not a 100 percent happy and energized, but still good.

  • First Sorry for my english:)

The problem is that you keep feeding those bad emotions instead of get action, also you don’t have a life purpose, “Oh I don’t do this, this is why I’m not happy” “Oh live in the now and you’ll be happy” Doesn’t matter how much of philosophy you put inside your life, you need like 80% of directly experience, let happiness flow inside you, stop caring about society expectations and you don’t need pursue happiness, joyfully is natural, you gotta live happy, do what makes you happy, fuck society expectations. I’m telling you this, because I have a political career and I basically depend on how people is going to see me, even though I’m happy. Now would someone not be happy? Just do what makes you happy, don’t be lazy and say “Netflix and Chill” makes me happy, because nobody would feel happy after months of netflix and chill. Let the joyfully of life flowing through you, existence by itself is amazing, how can somebody not be happy? if you don’t live in a very poor country there is no reason at all, you know why people are not happy? Because they’re slaves from their own ego, because they’re slaves for society expectations, because you guys think happiness is a objective feeling, like a fucking goal, almost a decade ago, when I had 14 years old, I had depression, and I can tell you guys, depression was the best thing that happened in my life, I suffered bullying, alcoholic dad, super moralist religious family, 1001 emotional problems and the worst belief system possible, but then one day I decide to change and everything changed. take action and let the happiness flowing inside you, don’t be judge anything, don’t be moralist, how can you not love existence by itself? (I know why, I have been there) so what you have problems with relationship? so what? let it go, you don’t like your job? let it go the only thing that matters in life is love NOT this bullshit egoist love, this addiction to control and sex that humans have, Why the fuck would somebody marry another person? I’m kind of a hypochrite to say this because marriage is good for my public appearance, but you guys that don’t have a crazy life purpose, you guys that don’t need to care about people starving to death, you guys are fucking out your mind not being happy, why do you guys would care about what people think about you? why would you guys care about marriage? such a romantic act being attached legally to somebody and then trap yourself into a stupid cage of social expectations, why would you guys care about your social status? money? power? Find a passion, keep self-actualizing pursuing enlightment. The most important thing is to let happiness flowing inside you, existence is joyfully, if you are not feeling good to be alive right now is because you care about society expectations, about moralist beliefs, about beliefs that you hold, can’t you see how you are not letting happiness flow inside you? why the fuck you keep traping yourself in beliefs? stop holding things, the existence by itself is so joyfully god(the whole everything). I can understand the why of your anxiety, deeply you keep holding this need from social approval, for ego satisfaction, why are you afraid of living? why do you fear death so much? why do you even believe in death? Personally I believe in reincarnation, at this point you probably got so triggered that I can feel all your bullshit justifications, your rage, this need that you have to prove my wrong to yourself, you want my recognition of how smart that you are? why are you making such an effort and stressing yourself out just to keep holding beliefs? to keep being unsatisfied and unhappy? Well is better trying to prove my point (which means that you at least got triggered) than just be totally blind, ignore and laugh at, a miserable and unhappy life is so satisfying to your ego right? everyone that is happy is just a fool am I right? I’m just a fool right? you an unhappy/unsatisfied person are the smarter one am I right?

If you’ll just ignore everything that I’v said just try to do this: STOP FEEDING THIS CIRCLE OF NEGATIVE EMOTIONS!

As in my country we say

Butterflies to you 😉 I wish you could think about what I’v said.

  • My life changed when i dropped the word happiness from my vocabulary, its a scam word to me now, so what would make you happy? kinda implies that you are not happy now, so I just be! within being, I am just being and that’s it.
