  • Hey Nick I spent 28 years working in private consulting work for health clubs. I have lived all over the country (road warriors we were called). If you run into a hitch I’m sure I can solve the problem. Staff, sales training, marketing, a tool for closing called a PAR-Q (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire ) works 95% of the time. The old version that discusses where they have been, what they have done and why they are here. The new version is only a health questionnaire-it sucks.The Par Q filters out people who shouldn’t be working out, creating a liability and credibility issue (when they drop dead on the wo floor-had it happened ), and establishes budget, goals and becomes a mirror to the client if they say no. “You’re saying no to you and your goals sir” Most owners forget that they are in a people business and think FB ads, Twitter, will pull all kinds of traffic. Bullshit. Internal marketing from members, who are sold themselves, are your best billboard. Remember to have a grand opening gig with a special offer and incentive to existing member base to refer people.

    I know they can get expensive AF but they really work. My personal trainer has one in his gym and it made a huge difference for me. We would not only use it for exercising (standing crunches, dips, squats, etc) but we mainly used it for recovery between sets and between exercises. There is a foam rubber pad you can put on it and use it for recovery. It really made a huge difference for me, my wife and two of my friends that went to the same trainer. You made me think of it when you said you wanted to add a recovery station…. anyway food for thought.

  • Devil Dog, I know you have heard of KISS. 1. Get to know your current customer base find out the likes,dislikes of these customers. They are the ones paying the bills now, plus they are the ones to have the most potential to grow your gym now. I like your thought of a lifestyle gym to help people become healthier may it be physical, mental. 2. Hands on ownership but i don’t mean micromanagement, be visible, follow up, take an interest in and with your associates you have to develop them to succeed and function as you would. Poor service and associate turnover is an immediate lost revenue. My experience Marine Corps brother also multiple years experience as a big box retail manager. Much success to you both.
